Reviews (page 3 of 7)
The corals self titled album is great with a mix of barber shop quartets and rocky pink Floyd esc music was very good. gonna give it a 8/10
Lots of styles are mixed here, and somehow rhe result is still coherent. It was an etertaining listening experience.
Liked it a lot. Adventurous and whimsical, I liked how the songs followed themes. Really good for baking.
NIce one
Es como un poco country - rock. Está bien.
A pleasant surprise from a band u had never heard of. Super listenable, if not exactly the most innovative. But they do have their own definitive that I enjoy. Nice, pleaseing, generic rock that doesn't suck.
pretty catchy and pretty short
I had a good time, but I do not think it belongs on the list.
Awesome Ez 4.5
Good stuff
This was a very pleasant surprise. From the first few seconds I though "yeah this is gonna be good" and it stayed just as good the whole time. The standout was Dreaming of You, which sounds like motown cover and I love it. I'd give this an 8 or 9 out of 10. It's close to a 5 star, but I don't even know what my criteria for a 5 star are anymore. Is that only for 10/10s? Is a 10/10 even attainable? Album cover: A. I like looking at it.
This album rocked. I'd never heard of it but had fun the entire time. It's not too long, great guitar, awesome vocals. It rocks pretty hard throughout. At times the album really reminds me of My Chemical Romance? That might be a weird association, but they were around in similar times. I'm in the process of catching up to a few missed albums so I only listened once. Good stuff. 8/10
4.0
Was familiar with two songs. I could have sworn this band was a 70's 80's band. Good songs nice atmosphere. Did well in this house
This album has the heart of the 60s and transports elements of early rock and psych into the unfitting year of 2002. I was suprised by this one. While no songs particularly stood out to me, the sound that they created on this record is a great time piece of the 60s with better production.
No nice genre box Shapeshifting music wizards Casting rock weirdness
Listened before? N A good album from a band that I didn’t remember hearing until I heard the final track. The style is all over the place (in a good way) and they seem to be talented musicians. It wasn’t long enough to get old, and a few of the songs were downright catchy. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Dreaming of You
Good, not a bad song in there
I remember The Coral knocking about the NME scene of the early 2000s, but never listened to a full album. Better than expected.
Things I know about The Coral: 1) Bri’ish 2) they’re named after coral Things I learned today: 1) During a weekend of 1st time listens for both the Smiths' self-titled debut & Meat is Murder, The Coral might be my favourite jangly rock out of the three of them! 2) Music critics really like white reggae, especially in the vein of Madness/The Specials. However, the tracks here are fun & few enough in number ("Skeleton Key", the hidden track "Time Travel") so the comparison luckily does not define the album as a whole. 3) Well it's something I kinda knew already, but I really like a lot of "neo-psychedelic" bands that carry 60's pop sounds into the 21st century. The Coral is no exception HL: "Shadows Fall", "Dreaming of You", "Simon Diamond", "Skeleton Key", "Calendars and Clocks" June 16, 2024
Wow! Forgot how good this album is! The opening four tracks are as good as it gets, with the sublime ‘Dreaming Of You’ being the standout. A great jangly, poppy, psychy rock and roll record!
3.7/5 listened 3x. cool album, never heard it before
Wow I love the spanky guitar tone on the first track. Without trying to come across as immediately self-centered, this is exactly the kind of guitar tone that I often strive for and incorporate in my own music. Great "grab the listener" effect. Wow COOOL sounding vocals in this first track too. I am impressed! I really enjoyed this album. I listened to it while meal prepping about a dozen burritos to eat over the next week or two, and it was an amazing record to put on while doing so. The thing that stood out most to me is that they had this intentional meander that would happen in some songs- where they would take a turn down a random road into a different musical area and then just hung out there for a bit. It felt to me like a real band were writing these songs and in a beautiful way detached from current trends in pop/rock songwriting, where everything has to be a platform for the vocals. Even though this band came out earlier, it reminded me of Fleet Foxes, as they tend to also have these shifts in their songs where they change tempos and keys and play around with structure just for the sake of doing it. I was also surprised at how often they went into this 1960s (? I think?) sound, like on "Waiting for the Heartaches". It sounded like a more modern Beatles track.
It's interesting to me that this album gets labelled as folk rock, since it feels so much different than other folk music to me. It does, however, sound like songs that you would sing on a ship from time to time, so maybe that makes it folk. Really cool album overall with good production. 4/5
decent record. enjoying.
This album was weirdly fun. They sound like a dance-y folk band in spooky animated movie in the best way. I enjoyed how consistent that sound and vibe were through the album.
New Orleans sound, reminiscent of Kings of Leon
A good album, I liked Spanish Main and Dreaming of you.
This was a fun and funky album. Every song felt like it was in a completely different style/genre (beach, reggae, polka, ska, rock?!!), but the overarching album still worked because the singer's voice remained constant, and many of the songs had a sort of funk, sinister New Orleans vibe.
Really liked this. Never heard of them before.
Really enjoyed it
Solid psych rock that I need to listen to a few more times. Love the vibe though.
Delightful album by a bunch of teenagers who take you on a grand tour of music and style history. As many ideas in music as the cover shows it will be.
Something different. Much better than I remembered.
I used to really like this and enjoyed rediscovering it. They were doing their own thing and kind of got lumped in with the other indie bands of the time. Dreaming of You is such a great tune
Never heard of The Coral. They have a modern psychedelic vibe to them. Well recorded, talented, just polished enough. I like these guys.
Pleasantly surprised by this, it hit right today
Fun rock album, liked it more than I thought I would.
I liked the neo-60s sound of this.
This seemed like a good soundtrack for a slightly crazy carnival. I heard songs suitable for an off-kilter carousel, a slightly scary fun house, a spooky dark ride, and sundry spinny rides run by slightly insane clowns. Yet it never went completely off the rails.
Good. Very garage rocky.
The Coral's self-titled album, "The Coral," is a captivating journey through psychedelic rock and indie pop. Released in 2002, this debut album showcases the band's eclectic style and musical prowess. From the infectious melodies of "Dreaming of You" to the haunting beauty of "Shadows Fall," each track on the album offers something unique and compelling. The band's use of diverse instruments, including trumpets, keyboards, and strings, adds depth and richness to their sound, creating a lush sonic landscape that draws listeners in. While "The Coral" may not have received the same level of mainstream attention as some of their later albums, it remains a standout debut that highlights the band's talent and creativity. With its catchy hooks, inventive arrangements, and distinctive vocals, "The Coral" is a must-listen for fans of indie rock and psychedelic music.
Really cool mix of styles and influences. It's definitely tough to pin down. I enjoy the singer's voice, it definitely feels passionate. The instrumental arrangements are intricate but super tight.
2 early 2000s UK artists I've never heard of in a row. These guys were pretty fun though. I'll spend more time in their discography. Strong 3.5 rounding up.
Even after reading the Wikipedia page for this album I still have no frame of reference for this album so I might be totally missing some context but regardless I thought this was pretty good. It’s one of those 00s rock throwback albums (I think of are you gonna be my girl by jet for some reason) and this one gives 60s/70s rock at least vocally. Shadows fall and calendars and clocks are my favs.
The first album in the project so far I’ve listened to twice before rating. It spoke to me but I wanted to be certain it was deserving of a 4/5, and it is. I’ve never consciously listened to The Coral before; this was basically a new discovery for me. I loved the production, it’s a very well made record. I get vibes of a slightly ska-influenced version of the Stereophonics. Spanish Main is a very enticing opener, how about those harmonies? I Remember When is the standout track for me and I also quite enjoyed Simon Diamond. Good stuff.
Neo-psicodelia, folk rock. Está bien. Un 4.
That was unexpectedly enjoyable! Not entirely enjoyable but enjoyable to an unexpected level. I might have to give that one another listen-through at some point.
Like a modern folk album, liked it 3.7
Actually quite enjoyed this fun style, rockish but not too serious.
De hit is volgens mij Dreaming of You. Maar daar moet dit album het helemaal niet van hebben. Het is een mooi totaalproduct. Het lijkt soms weinig pretentie uit te stralen, maar zit stiekem toch leuk in elkaar. Een ontdekking.
4/5 Great listen
All songs enjoyable
WOAH, I genuinely was very pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this album. It's not something that a lot of people would appreciate, but I just liked the vibes. I don't think that there was anything special that day but I just felt hyped up when listening to the first two songs of the album. Of course, things started going downhill from the third song onwards, but I didn't expect it to be a perfect album, which is why I am giving it 5 stars. Pretty exciting getting an album that is not difficult to listen to :D
Eerste bristse rock album dat ergens op lijkt
postitiv overraskelse! legesyg, varieret og ikke så lang at gimmicken bliver anstrengt. Dreaming of You er stadig fed
This was awesome. Felt like a combination of The Doors, 60’s garage rock, and a sea shanty band, with a dash of psychedelia. Some of the vocal harmonies are amazing. Each song is distinct and doesn’t feel like it retreads the same ground. I read that the lead singing has been compared to Jim Morrison. I see that, but the comparisons end pretty quickly. He is fantastic though. Good range, both vocally and emotionally. The band is tight, the riffs are hot, the organ is enchanting, and the general attitude and confidence of this debut album is engaging. I really enjoyed this and would love to see how they grow from this. I do wonder if they could top this though. The one thing I’ll say to detract from this album is that it tapers off at the end and I stopped caring a little. 4 stars. Standout tracks: I Remember When, Dreaming of You, Goodbye, Waiting for the Heartaches, Skeleton Key
Best description is campy. Lots of fun sounds and good hooks, but not really catchy. I was dreading it after reading a couple reviews and skimming the Wiki. But was pleasantly surprised. Vocals kinda reminded me of Jack Black. 4 stars.
Very easy to listen to, catchy songs. I'm a little worried how this album will hold up under repeated listens, but so far, so good. Favorite songs: Dreaming of You - nice feel Wildfire - I was about to write off this track as just okay, but then the guitars joined in, western feel Overall the album's start is its strongest point - the sequence of the first 4 songs is mwah, chef's kiss. Least favorite songs: Skeleton Key - too repetetive for me Calendars and Clocks - same thing, this song bored me to tears
no me ha parecido memorable, pero lo he disfrutado mucho
Early 2000s alt rock with strong influences from baroque pop and garage revival contemporaries, and 60s psychedelia and blue-eyed soul. His vocals sometimes remind me of Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys. It's fast-paced, eclectic, and well-produced. Plenty of fun ideas, with a few bangers, even if some of the deep cuts don't hit the mark. Favorites: I Remember When, Dreaming of You, Waiting for the Heartaches
Weirdly , the second ska white boy wanna be reggae album in a row. Is this algorithm skewed? The previous album I rated a 4 star. This one has pretty poor production quality , but seems a bit more original and incorporates a lot of musical styles. I'll give it 4 stars
Surprisingly good. Only knew 'Thinking of You' before so expected it to sound similar to that, but it actually had a pretty diverse sound, the dub sounding song early on was a nice surprise. At only 35 minutes too it's over before you think about getting bored, will have to go back to this.
4*
Accidentally found a fav song I’d never been able to remember the title of in this album so that’s nice! Rest of album short and cohesive but didn’t reveal any other secret favs so 4*
Dreaming of You is a great song which I seem to always forget. The rest was comparatively poor but still decent listening.
Amazing for a debut album but probably one of the worst i have listened to still a good album just nothing compared to the rest
Never heard of this album but... the first song is sooooo cool. Whole album is great, there should be more albums that sound like this. Has a swagger and attitude, but also shows a lot of creativity and vision. Very enjoyable and I'll probably check out more of their stuff.
Above average rock album. 3.5/5
Good mix of odd and straightforward rock music
A surprising discovery for me! After listening to the album of the day, I listen to their latest album, which I also liked, maybe more than the album of the day.
Never heard of them. Hmmmh, interesting. It’s harmonious and varied enough to keep me engaged and not it’s not annoying. There’s some parts with too many repetitions but I can stand it. I think, I like the last song on the album ‘Calendars and Clocks’ the most.
Some good tunes! Not sure that I’d ever listened to The Coral before
Very good
I’ll restate my view that you need to listen to many albums 10 times to decide if you like them. There just isn’t time to do that but I like the early days feeling I’m getting from this one. It sounds like an English version of Os Mutantes. (How’s that for a blast from the 1001 past?)
Easy listen! Some really nice tunes in it! Solid 8/10 in my opinion!
Even though my first ever standing gig was The Coral I’d never listened to this album in full before. Apparently that was my loss. I’m a fan of the unhinged, chaotic energy in most of these songs, and the way it sounds completely cohesive and somewhat unique despite the clear 60s influences. And that’s before considering Dreaming of You, which is worth a star on its own. In conclusion: much better than yesterday’s turn of the century Liverpudlian guitar band album (H.M.S. Fable).
Not bad at all.
A good, solid alternative album reminiscent of classic alternative artists like The Clash, The Psychedelic Furs, or Squeeze. Lots of strong guitar riffs, fast-paced, and energetic tracks.
I'm surprised I've never heard this before - or at least don't remember listening to this band before.
Pirate rock! i kinda like it. 4?
If it was a full album of ‘Dreaming of You’ it would get 5 stars.
Good shit strong 4
Solid
Interesting and pretty good
i rlly like the album cover so thats promising made in 2002, but feels like it was made earlier i enjoy the guitar on all the tracks, the vocals sound a bit bland in some of the songs got better as the album went on
Øv nu har jeg glemt det, men husker det som en 4’er - ret fedt!
They seem like a 60s rock band that transported to the 21st century. Well, there is a song called Time Travel on the album.... Standouts: Dreaming of You, I Remember When, Goodbye, Wildfire. Others: Waiting for the Heartaches, Skeleton Key Very solid. I like it. 3.5
Neo-psicodelia, folk rock. Está bien. Un 4.
Es como un poco country - rock. Está bien.
7/10. Pirate music that doesn't sound like pirate music because it's actually 2000's rock? Sign me up!
A fun little pirate-adjacent album. 7/10
The 1960’s called and they want their tunes back.
I liked it, kinda weird in a good way.
This was a fun listen
Loved it ! Gave me cat empire vibes
Je sais pas pourquoi tout le monde chie dessus dans les commentaires, c’est vraiment d’la bombe
Indierock with interesting twists. Like it. One of the albums that grows on you after a while
Folk rock. Interesante.
Love this one. Hadn't heard it in ages.
This was surprisingly good. I really enjoyed it as it was a different sound.
I quite liked that!
funny
Album cover looks like.... I just don't know. There's only 1 R in Coral so it can't be corral, which would have made more sense. Indie rock maybe? It is a "the" band with no real sense in the name... Ok it's jokey early 00s indie, with like a rockabilly flavour. I normally hate that shit but I really liked this against all odds and want to rate it highly. It's worth noting that I had a migraine yesterday and I still feel like I have some kind of brain fog. But this is album is fun through the haze. 4/5.
Really liking their sound. Some special songs here, "Dreaming of You," "Waiting for the Heartaches." Really strong album. It seems like they are super talented, they know who they are as a band, and they are just having fun with it.
Excellent opening, let's see if it continues in this vein.... So far, so good.... Looking for it now on Discogs!
Never heard of them and really enjoyed.
This album is weird in the good way. I quite like the lead singer’s voice. Give me some bass-led songs with harmonies and I’m in! Dreaming Of You is the highlight of the album for me. There are other good songs too like I Remember When, Shadows Fool, and Goodbye. The lyrics do get a bit repetitive sometimes and the last track is a bit slow for my taste. It sorta feels like they ran out of steam at the end. This album was on the original 1001 list and supposedly was removed by the 2018 edition. I guess we are working off the old list? I am thankful it was still generated for us.
First time listening: 9/11 songs liked It's like a modern version of The Doors, in the best way! Some songs feel very ska like too, that may just be a bias of mine for being in a ska band. Enjoyable! 2 songs saves
Really enjoyed it. Had no expectations and it was great
Psychedelic birtish rock... Punk ish Playlist songs: I remember when Dreaming of you Goodbye
Oh dreaming of you ist cool. Den Rest entdecke ich gerade erst und dieser 60ies sound gefällt mir.
Liked it.
Liked it a lot. will definitely listen again
I didn’t know the artist. I’m a fan of the really guitar-heavy music so this was a good fit for me. Few specific songs stuck out but i enjoyed it holistically and I’d like to listen again.
I started this album expecting something like any mid-2000 indie rock, so, I wasn't expecting too much. However, this is a very nice album, with fewer cliches and some good songs. Nothing spectacular, but a nice album.
Es como un poco country - rock. Está bien.
Liked it but can't really remember any songs off of it. I guess these are like the Beatles but they're MODERN BEATLES which just makes them Uninteresting Beatles.
"Dreaming of you" can't be this old... A few other great songs too.
I was there when Dreaming of you became a hit, I thought they were good but had never fully heard this album until now, it’s quite good
I really liked this record! Sort outlaw, or pirate
nice one
Some really interesting vibes. I had never heard this ever before
They have character
An enjoyable blast from the past!
More unknown brits bringing the solid rock and roll
Not the type of music I'd actively seek out to listen to but was surprisingly enjoyable and catchy!
dreaming of you gives me joy. other songs are mehh tho but generally love this genre
Super assured retro psych/Brit beat debut
This was overall pretty fun. Liked Remember When and Dreaming of You best.
Solid upbeat scally rock with ‘Dreaming of you’ the obvious standout
I had absolutely forgotten about The Coral, and can’t really understand why they’re on here. All that aside, I didn’t mind this at at all; I only knew “Dreaming Of You”, which provided a nice bit of nostalgia. The rest of the tracks didn’t leave much of an impression on me, but they were inoffensive - and this album is very sharp, very concise, so that made for a decent experience. It’s very much a middle of the road, solid 2.5* album - but I enjoyed it more than some of the 2* albums I’ve listened to here, so I’m rounding up.
Yesterday I watched an old episode of Scrubs with a Coral song in it, and I thought to myself, I really should listen to some more of their songs: the generator is getting too powerful. I love his gravely voice. The rest is good but not earth shattering. I would happily listen to it as background music without turning it off, and I may even choose to put it on sometimes, but it's not something I will continually return to. I think The Zutons fill essentially the same niche but do it better. Still, not bad: 3/5
The harmonies were fun, at the start it reminded me of sea shanty people but that quickly left my mind. But it sounds like a pub band if that makes sense.
Actually a pleasant surprise
6/10
Psychedelic rock and indie rock built from jangling guitars, vintage keyboards, loose rhythms, and hazy vocals feels like wandering through an eccentric seaside amusement arcade where every room contains a different forgotten band from the 1960s—charming, colorful, and entertaining, though often more whimsical than substantial. The album overflows with ideas and personality, even if Most of them don't leave a lasting impression. Its spontaneity is both its greatest strength and its biggest weakness.
A little ska, a little 2000s rock, a little 60s rock. Put together it doesn’t ever fully mesh. Still a fun album, but not overly cohesive feeling.
I remember being SO excited when I heard "Dreaming of You" for the first time in the early 2000s. I instantly checked out their album, hoping for more of the same but the only track that came close was "I Remember When." I'll give them credit for pioneering a rather unique sound that evokes a sense of hard-rock sea shanties, but the rest of the album falls short of these other two songs for me.
Enjoyed parts of it. Standout songs: Spanish main Wildfire Calenders and Clocks
Not to be confused with their country and western counterparts The Corral. There’s something a bit different going on with this album, tempo changes, interesting vocals, use of non standard instruments. I’ve definitely heard a lot worse on this list
Kind of a surprise in terms of where this album went but ultimately not my jam. It's like, a throwback to a particular moment in British music history that I feel like was better done by other bands. Anachronistic. Can see how they resonated with the Oasis crowd.
I feel like I'm listening to 93.3 with a generic alternative band playing. I'm not unhappy, but I'm also not not cranking the volume. I'd go watch them at Kegs and Eggs, but only for the general bar concert vibe; not because I was stoked to see them. I'm actually really surprised they felt like they needed more than an hour of these songs to make their point here. Traveling Circus was SO fun and unique and stood out. But the album is just too long for that one song to raise it up.
Nice to see the Beach Boys made it into the 21st century. Welcome guys!
Bobby punk-faring pirates. It's like a cruise ship full of talented musicians shipwrecked on an island and had nothing to do but eat coconuts and produce music. Twelve years later, you have this very interesting but nearly impossible to relate to work of endearing, erratic energy.
Ganz nett, mag das Georgel.
I enjoyed this one! I don't think from a technical perspective its a 4, but if I could give it a 3.5 I would.
I’d never heard of The Coral before, and I don’t think that was a bad thing. Their self-titled album isn’t terrible, but on the other hand, I can’t really see why it should be on this list. You could think of it as Mando Diao playing songs that, for good reason, hadn’t gotten much attention up until then. For me, that’s a 5/5 for the sound and a 1/5 for the songwriting. That makes it one of those 3-star albums that actually shouldn’t be on the list.
This was more interesting than a lot of the brit pop on here, at least
An interesting debut album by this Brit group. You can feel the influences from the 60s era. Well engineered and produced worth further listening time.
i don't like egg shaped tree limbs or viscous antlers. tea should be forgettable but served promptly at sundown as the horses return, crawling on their knees, dressed in their Sunday best. tanker ships take a shortcut through the arable lot past the third haiku. i think that's how it happened but i may be mixing things up with an uneventful dream i had last thursday. this album is - probably - better than i think it is. I'm going to average my 1 star review with the Guardian's 5 star review titled "The Fab 6" cause...there's six band members, they're from Liverpool and it seems the british press thought quite highly of them back in 2002 - a couple years prior to the creation of Bobby Ds original 1001 list. you can do the math as to why it's here. and that may do a disservice to a band that is really frickin British and maybe you had to be there - or at least hear it before you die. check.
Taas yksi sellainen levy, joka ei ihan täysin säväytä, mutta on kuitenkin himpun keskivertoa parempi.
These guys do pretty classic garagey pop rock songwriting, and it’s fun but for some reason Coral Island is the only album I’ve heard from them that’s really stuck with me. Glad to finally have gotten around to this though.
I think I need to give this more time. Started off really liking it and then found I wasn't keeping focussed. But then by Calendars and Clocks I was wow'd again. Could have just been me but for a short 30-minute album, I went all over the place.
Not a big fan
This album sounds like a melange of many, many influences - and consequently comes across as pretty confused. Overall not a terrible album, but not outstanding.
super strong start, tails off a bit near the end
Most of these songs suck and then a couple are amazing. It’s so hard to know how to rate something like this.
No fav song
3.5
Nice. Good.
Overall Rating - 3.27/5 (6.55/10). This album has an updated British Invasion feel throughout it. Pretty good, all in all.
Really quite enjoyed this one. Good variety. Sixties vibe in some places. Catchy tunes. Had never really heard of the Coral before!
Always liked dreaming of you, rest of album is pleasantly good too
Pretty odd at times but I could feel it growing on me as I did quite like a few songs Did think Dreaming of you was actually going to be love cats and I’d just somehow horribly misread the track listing 3.5
I didn't mind this album. In fact, there were actually a good handful that I enjoyed. There were still a few tracks that I felt were a bit boring with nothing much pulling me in, but I would say that this was balanced out by the tracks I had fun listening to. I feel like I don't have too much to say about listening to this album; there was nothing really overly extreme about it, positive or negative. It's just sort of generic-sounding in places. Favourite lyric: 'Why do I listen to sad songs to make me feel good, when I know I've done wrong?' ('Waiting for the Heartaches'). Standouts: Spanish Main I Remember When Simon Diamond Waiting for the Heartaches
i've gotten like 4 british rock albums in a row so i'm starting to get a bit burnt out but this one is actually interesting. they get a bit silly with it kinda music the main cast of night in the woods would like fave track: skeleton key
The main vocalist is incredible and the instrumentation has a distinct ska feel. Feels like a devious album somehow.
Some of the songs are good individually but album does not know what it wants to be and is not cohesive. Some of these songs also sound a lot like other songs. I wouldn't say you must listen before your die. They do have some great song intro instrumentals. It is also a little too long for my liking but idk if I was supposed to listen to just disc 1 or both 1 and 2
Neo-psychedelia, folk rock.
This is dumb. Clearly they're talented musicians but the songs and arrangements are wonky and take me put of my head space. It's fine 3/5
Pretty catchy, but I’m not terribly surprised I e never heard of them. Apparently they’re kind of big in England? 3.5 stars
Really could not place the genre on this one- I enjoyed it!
This was very fun but unfortunately I was NOT in a whimsical mood
“Dreaming of you” is a song that’s been in the periphery of my playlists so it was nice to finally hear it in context of the album to find that it’s not a one off song.
A bit of a random inclusion, but I quite liked it. Solid songs and performance. Stylistically it doesn't stand out much. At the time there were so many bands doing this type of Psycheledic Garage Rock Revival that some were bound to fall under the radar. Key tracks: I Remember When Shadows Fall Dreaming of You
I wouldn't listen to it again, but it was interesting enough. Some ska influences with some more traditional rock tracks. Not great, but not bad.
Britpop part 2
An interesting mix of things in here. Quite a few good songs but not really any I would consider great
Was not what I expected.
3/5
I did not know "Dreaming of You" is their song. What I like about this album is that all songs are so different and easy to listen to.
too much going on and yet not enough reason to justify their placement on the list. who even are these guys
Eine Mischung aus Rock und Piratenmusik - klingt irgendwie cool
This was surprisingly varied and enjoyable but I have to give it 3 stars in honour of the many better albums which could have taken its place in the list. I would have been cheered up knowing it was taken out in an update to the list, if only 2 Adeles, Britney, Gorillas, Muse and Skunk Anansie hadn't gone too. Thankfully all still available on the generator for our random listening enjoyment. Top tracks: Simon Diamond reminded me of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci but a bit more boring. I enjoyed Goodbye and Calendars and Clocks too
new band makes old genre is not as refreshing as you ever want it to be
I enjoyed this album and its broad variety, featuring many changes in tempo, intricate guitar work, and supporting instruments. Layered vocals provided a harmony-like sound that punctuated many of the songs with different emotional vibes. Overall, the album was reminiscent of The Giraffes with a less hard rock sound, but acoustic guitars, horns, and accordion were all used in a similar fashion to create a ska/polka/whatever twist on their brand of rock. I contend that this album wasn't influential or good enough to be heard before my death, but I enjoyed hearing it nevertheless.
Probably one of the weirder albums I've listened on this list. Didn't really expect to sound like it did that being said even though I did enjoy some of these songs I can't really see myself going back to it 6/10 Favourite: Spanish Main Least Favourite: Bad Man
первые 2 песни внезапно понравились, все остально превратилось в какую то скуку
Not bad. I could listen to this again
I have a vague recollection of this album from back then; it was when I was at my peak of trying to stay on top of the latest and greatest music. This, however, is not that. It’s pretty mediocre, definitely not worthy of this list. Spanish Main = repetitive. Shadows Fall and Simon Diamond = grating whiny vocals. The rest of the album was a mixed bag of songs, but nothing stood out as memorable or particularly enjoyable. (3)
it was different and somewhat entertaining, but not my thing.
Gotta say this one grew on me. I find it impossibly hard to categorize. Maybe avant garde pirate polka rock for your Russian nephew’s bar mitzvah? Still working it out. Fun at times. Some brilliant moments. It isn’t my favorite. Note to the producer, the mix is crystalline to borderline shrill. Fix dat for the re-release. But I found the musicianship and sheer breadth of influences laudable.
Started off kind of weird, stayed kind of weird, but not bad. Overall, a nice listen. The band incorporates an interesting mashup of genres that mostly works.
Best Song: Spanish Main. An electric start to the album with a great bluesy feel. Worst Song: Wildfire. A perfect example of the ordinary indie rock that I wished they avoided producing. Overall: Decent rock music that never felt like it lived up to the potential shown in the first track. It felt like every time I wanted them to play faster and more aggressively, or for the singer to infuse more passion into his voice, they would instead pull back and fall into a more "radio-friendly" sound.
extremadamente diverso??? no me lo esperaba, me encantó
i liked it at the start and liked it less as it continued lol
3/5
Quite impressed that these fellas seem to remain operational. Classic 3 star, fine, not 1001 worthy. Wouldn't be surprised if they eventually released a goodie.
The Coral are essentially a sixties outfit, not only b/c James Skelly's vocals are reminiscent of Eric Burdon & Mark Lindsay, the organ has you jamming like The Doors, & the compositions are playfully soulful like The Kinks, The Stones, & The Mamas & the Papas, but b/c an act of discovery in the realm of rock 'n' roll underlies the entire project. In other words, refreshingly, The Coral has you feeling that this is music that's only been around for three or four years, & they just can't wait to share what they've heard. 'It feels like I'm fixin' to die / She took my soul and she blew my mind.' Not much here is that deep, at least from a conceptual point of view, but who needs that when you've got soul? So yea, better than expected & better than mucho.
first listen its okay
Never heard of these guys before. Overall I kind of dug this, it really gives me like a modern-take-on-60's-garage-bands vibe. 3.25/5
Decent album, kinda reminds me of gypsy punk stuff. I thought it was fine and there's fun parts, but overall I don't see myself revisiting it. 2.75/5
that one single doing a lot of lifting
I enjoyed it, unique fun sounding, but top 1001, woof
⭐⭐⭐ Varierad indierock som är ganska kul och med inslag från varierade gengres. Tycker dock det är lite litestarka låtar. Dreaming of you är en höjdare men sen är det lite tunt. Bäst är Spanish main och Dreaming of you. Ok men inte mer, blir en 3a.
For all we know, these are all Guess Who or Grass Roots album tracks.
Solid 2000s rock record - hadn't heard of this group before. Has some familiar and traditional sounds, pretty easy flowing rock. Some nice harmonies and sounds that come out of it, but nothing really that distinct that draws my full attention. Decent one though.
Die ersten 2-3 Lieder gut angefangen, dann aber eher mäßig.
Dreaming of You sehr nostalgisch für mich dank scrubs. Ansonsten kein 1001 Album was ich gehört haben muss
Not that this had to do with anything, but there was a moment listening to this where I had my headphones on and stared dramatically into my reflection in a window, and it felt really fucking cool. Now, the MUSIC wasn't cool, but the FEELING was. So basically I don't really know what to say about this album.
Egentlig et ok balkan-pirat-energisk album med nogle missere blandt de sidste numre.
I had never heard of The Coral before and it was a unique listen. Probably deserves a revisit because I accidentally had my Spotify on shuffle which is never good.
Good album for a party.
I remember when “Dreaming of You” came out back in 2002. I absolutely loved everything about it: the energy of the clipped staccato guitar chords, the unbelievably catchy melody, the Madness vibes, and of course that incredible vocal performance. I wanted a whole album of this song, so was disappointed when that's not what we got with this album. Listening back to it now, for the first time in over 20 years, it's not nearly as bad as I remembered. Especially when you don't frame it around the expectations of “Dreaming of You”. Overall, it feels more like a collection of old sea shanties, performed by a group heavily influenced by ska and dub. It can be quite kitsch at times, and quite folky in nature. By “folky”, I mean more in terms of storytelling than musical genre. The best thing about these songs are the vocals. The four part harmonies are great, but James Skelly’s voice is the real star. It's incredible when he lets it take off, especially in “Dreaming of You”, which is up there as one of my favourite vocal performances in general. There's a real 60s vibe to all of the songs. If you told me that “Goodbye” was released in the mid-60s, I'd fully believe you. “Simon Diamond” has a bit of a Doors vibe to it too. Skelly's voice gets similar to Morrison at times, but let's face it, we should stop the Doors comparison there. The first half of the album is definitely more enjoyable than the second. Things start to get a bit “samey” and tired after a while. It’s an album with some interesting, fun tunes, but an album that you MUST hear before you die? Not exactly what I'd be putting forward. “Dreaming of You” is a SONG you should hear before you die for sure, but the rest of the album is just good craic, not essential.
nice
Some nice songs but overall...well..
The Coral
3*
Would really say more like 3.5
A solid 3. Nothing spectacular, but nothing terrible either. Agree with others noting that this probably is borderline in terms of deserving a spot on this list, but there is plenty worse!
Didn't hate it... Well, at least I didn't hate most of it. Some songs were better than others.
Never heard of this band, but it was kinda enjoyable.
I think I never heard of them before. 60s influenced "sailor rock". Likely won't be in my rotation.
Mind blown with this one. Never heard of it or them but I honestly was mesmerized. ⭐⭐⭐
I liked it
decent ska rock or whatever the fuck this is
The songs were catchy
This seemed to be Gogol Bordello ish sound. It was fine but I think Gogol Bordello pulls it off better.
Okay. Just okay. Some interesting musical flourishes here and there, but overall okay.
Dreaming of you comes on the radio regularly so was familiar with that one. The rest is really eclectic, taking influence from everything under the sun. Depending on your mood this may sound either fresh or disjointed and incohesive.
Pretty chill album it reminded me of like the doors but may be a little funkier. You could definitely sit back and put this on in the party and it would be perfectly fine
Felt like some sort of pirate rock musical, which sounds awful but it was pretty fun.
I don't really remember this tbh
Not half as interesting as they think they are
I really enjoyed the first three almost surf rock songs and then it dropped off in quality for me.
Giving it 3 ... just . It feels as though half of the album is really good and the other half pretty derivative. Found Skeleton Key almost unlistenable .
Skjønte det ikke helt
Meh, I dunno to be honest. I thought I was going to dig this like it was still 2002 and I was supremely ready for some scally Scouse jangle-pop indie. But I don't know that I am. It's a shame, because there's so much talent in The Coral, especially in the sublime guitar work of Bill Ryder-Jones, one of the true geniuses of the UK 21st century music landscape (if you're reading this and want to get on an album that definitely won't be on here, then Yawn, Bill's 2019 masterpiece, is sublime). Anyway, it was OK, a bit of fun, but nothing much doing.
An intriguing listen. For an album released in 2002, this self-titled album defies definition and is reminiscent of the sixties and seventies. I was reminded of Odessey and Oracle by the Zombies, also on this project, but The Coral included some punk/new wave sound to be distinct. That made for an energetic, fun album. I don't know--I just enjoyed listening to the album a few times!
I was perfectly fine having never heard of this band, and my life is no different after listening to this. Nothing wrong with the music, nothing notable. No idea why it's on this list.
Low 3. Not entirely interesting, a little perplexing? I liked a couple tracks the second time around, but overall I don't want to listen to this much.
Not bad, not my usual
Veldig mid. 3/3
Has some fun and interesting moments. 3/5
Generic turn of the millennium post-britpop indie - not bad, not exceptional. Fine for a diverting half an hour - but "Dreaming of you" is the only one I'd listen to again.
I actually found this quite interesting to listen to. I’ve definitely heard worse on this generator.
Dreaming of you is a pretty solid song. Fell off for the majority of the rest of the album, but wasn't awful. I'd say 2.5 - round up.
It’s aight!
Not too bad. The last song was really unique and interesting.
Pretty good
Solid garage rock album no skips
this was pretty fun. Probably not gonna revisit too often, but had a jolly good time. Yarrr? Strong 3
The global reviews are way too harsh on these guys. I found this to be really fun.
It was okay, nothing I'll listen to again but it was fine
Good.
3,5
Thanks for posting. Never heard of band. But, enjoyed their music. Good sound.
Good option today, mostly due to knowing Dreaming of You really well so it was cool to listen to the rest of the album. Wasn't any other highlights for me there right now but I'll listen again for sure
I've never heard of The Coral, but was interested to listen upon reading a bit about them this morning. This is the kind of surprise that I've really enjoyed from doing the project. I do think they are a very talented band. They play everything very well. And they have songs that are indeed the type I would generally like. My main issue that is that they are all over the place style-wise. There's a bit of Brit psychedelia and American psychedelia. There's some 60's type folk. There's a bit of reggae. There's some Merseybeat. And yes, there's some sea shanty songs as well. It felt like one of those debut albums where they put everything they can do out there and see what might stick. And for me nothing truly stuck. I didn't dislike any of the songs, but I also didn't love any of them either. I understand why it's on the list (sort of), but I could have lived without hearing it. It's a 2.5 and I'm not sure where it will end up when I actually give it a rating.
Some good songs. Some weird ones.
The more I listen to this list, the more I think it was curated by one idiot.
Cool eclectic rock fusing many different styles and influences into a fun, hook-filled listen.
Interesting mix of songs
Not as bad as some of the reviews make it out to be.
Decent
A lot more eccentric than I expected, having only heard Dreaming of You before. A little overstuffed with influences from all over the place, which don't really work for me except on Dreaming of You. Sometimes a band just has one great single.
Decent vibes and instrumentals
It's not bad. 2,8
Actually very solid, almost a 4
I've heard a little bit of the Coral before. Not to this extent, though. Plenty of interesting fusions and musical directions heard throughout, with the album immediately starting with what I can only describe as a psychedelic-infused sea shanty. The remainder of the album continued to utilize psychedelia as a base, mixing in all other sorts of 60's rock influences (notably surf rock at points). Definitely no lack of originality here. The album itself almost scatters around a bit too much as a result.
Easy listen enjoyed a lot
Well, I'm glad I listened to it because the hit "dreaming of you" was one of my hits when I was in late highschool. Nothing transcendantal, some good parts the lyrics seems a bit crapy. I'll not listened to it again but meh'... Actually I find it pretty moder for a 2002 album, look like something from the 2010's, 2.5
Not what I expected! In my head The Coral wrote the song ‘In The Morning’, very indie and catchy. This album was different, again I can respect it is a good album but not great. Listened to this whilst up and down doing jobs and scrolling in bed. Dreaming of You, Goodbye and Waiting For The Heartaches standout.
Cool.
12/4/25. Never heard of this band. Solid rock music with some cool arrangements. Will need another listen but on the first, I enjoyed it! Thought the first portion of the album was the strongest.
I got some insanely conflicting feelings on this album. So to start, this album is so “early 2000s” sounding that it’s distracting. Like this easily could’ve been the soundtrack to any early 2000s teen dramedy without having to change anything about the album. So I think that there are spots where it has aged pretty well and some spots where it hasn’t. Ultimately my biggest takeaway was that the songs that work are great songs, and the ones that don’t work are teeth grindingly cringey. So I do think this album is held back pretty significantly because of a few tracks but I will also say that the like to dislike ratio was 6/5 so make of that what you will.
3- Stars (7/15)
Interesantes para ser del siglo XXI. Buen disco, bastante variado aunque lo había olvidado totalmente.
6.0/10 Liked about half of the songs.. pretty interesting.
Feels a little bit confused as a record in it's entirety. Some really nice stuff on there, but there's a few weird gear shifts. Overall doesn't really work for me as a record to listen to in one go, but if you pick and choose the good stuff it's great.
If "Jungle Japes" had lyrics and those lyrics were bad.
Correcto
Never heard of this band before. Okay sea shanty stuff, had some catchy moments
Alright, cool tracks
This music is pretty chill, has a very 70s vibe that kinda reminds me of the doors at times
3 sterne
I can hear that The Coral are very skilled musicians, their performances are sharp and self-assured. But despite that, the album didn’t stay with me; nothing felt settled or resonated emotionally. The ideas and technique often seem to take precedence over the song’s overall cohesion.
Rock mit psychedelischen Elementen. Ok aber für mich nichts besonderes. 3/5
Decent album. If I haven't been sober, the album would have had higher rating for sure
Didn't know this band/album. Quite surprised me in a good way, but lacked the quality to get to a fourth star
It’s fine. Nothing special. A few cool songs. Not for me but I’ll give it 3

Carnival-y
Some great stuff. Dreaming Of You obviously an all time classic. It's not their best album though, and I doubt I'll put it on again. Thought about a 4 but I don't think it deserves it.
