I quite liked it and preferred it to the other prison album. I got quite engrossed in his storytelling!

Very strong. Just great musicianship and although it does feel like rock from that era, they very much have their own sound.
Not unlistenable but pretty dull throughout, I'm afraid.
I won't be listening again in a hurry
I'm very grateful that Dave Grohl carried on making rock music. This album seems like a transition from his previous life to his current one and although there are some great moments, particularly near the start of the album, it's not REALLY engrossing.

I like the upbeat contrast of 3/5 miles in a second. Somebody to Love is just an amazing song. Songs are very short and listenable apart from a couple. Go To Her and Come Back Baby very strong finish to album
Power out is a highlight, great energy and rhythm. Lovely vocal melodies and powerful rhythm work throughout. Some lulls prevent it being 5 stars.
The rocking second half and the superb guitar partnership saved this album for me. Some iconic vocals as well of course.
Really liked the vibe and the vocals throughout. Just nothing that particularly stands out.
So much invention and creativity, there is just no equal. However, some songs outstay their welcome a little which prevents it being absolute perfection.
Very well made album. Some absolutely beautiful songs. You can tell they were just stepping out of the convention they were setting.
It feels like it's a frontier of the genre but not enough of the songs really stuck with me.
Very pleasant in the most part. Good changes in tempo throughout the album as well. Just nothing particularly amazing or memorable for me.
Very pleasant to listen to. Superbly well made.
First half was OK. Second half was pretty great, had some very well made and powerful songs.
Nothing particularly stood out.
Second half of this album was quite interesting. The first half was quite difficult.
A very strong album. Excellent musicianship all round.
A strong second half let down by a frist half with very little substance. Very cool and lovely sounds throughout.
Superb sound, especially his exploding vocals. Only thing stopping it being a perfect album is the songs following the exact same formula (but what a formula).
A voice and words that command respect. Beautiful.
Some very cool and original songs. A few misses that sound a bit dated but a great sounding album overall
Some decent, listenable songs but a lot of self-indulgent drivel. Way too long and just background noise.
Very forgettable hair rock. The last song was cool though.
A decent sounding album with some very good songs on it. Didn't like it as much as I thought I was going to to be honest.
A very difficult album to listen to. The vocals are grating and flat in many of the songs. However, I did find a couple of the songs earworming my brain afterwards to save it from being a 1*
I don't think this album was made to be listened in the car on your daily commute. 5* if I were on some psychotics. Some very cool riffs but very long.
This album really surprised me. Really strong songwriting and pleasant guitar work throughout.
Very feelgood throughout. Great uplifting licks and beats on every track. Shame I have to listen to these cars because it's very dance-worthy. Shame about him being a p.o.s.
The rockier and more upbeat songs really elevate this album to a great place. It's not back to back banger but there are some superb songs on it.
Some superb and original sounding songs on it. Certainly not back-to-back banger and there are some just unpleasant parts to the album. But also some songs that sound better today than they did back then.
A good album, not great by any stretch. Ash are great songwriters but their style and production make some of songs a little dull. Love the heaviness of guitars with such a fragile voice!
Some great songs. Can see why there was so much excitement over the band with this debut album.
I absolutely love the "heaviness" they create without loud drums/cymbals or heavy guitars, it's really clever and sounds sooo cool. My closest album to a 5 so far but not quite every song was super.
Excellent songwriting and performing, can see why this is so highly thought of. Would just need a bit more variety in sound and songs to make it better for me.
This still sounds absolutely massive. Absolutely genius production and arrangement. The lyrics are of their time and uncomfortable to listen to which is a shame because it will have prevented so many people listening to it and experiencing it.
An excellently produced album and Stuart #1's voice really shines through. Some really good songs and some OK ones.
Some of the 28 tracks on this are quite decent. As an aspiring musician, it is good to hear different ways of making albums and this is a good example of something I wouldn't have thought of doing and never want to do, but not totally terrible!
Pleasantly surprised by this. The music isn't as strong as The Smiths but maybe it's not fair to compare them.
This album really does it job and makes you stand up and pay attention to what it's saying which. I generally find lyrics difficult to pay attention to the first time around but this album was different in that regard. The beats are superb as well with some clever use of vocal samples.
Amazing sound throughout when you listen closely. Some outstanding songwriting as well. Not sure every song stands up well enough for 5 stars but it is very close. Would maybe be 5 on another day.
Pleasant enough album, just absolutely nothing in it which caught my ear.
Absolutely phenomenal. Every song has something about it and this album clearly changed the world of music!
Great vibe with some 5/5 tracks.
A very pleasant sounding album with some great songs. It does overstay its welcome though.
Absolutely superb. It gets your attention with the brilliant opener Spellbound and doesn't really deviate away from brilliance throughout.
I won't be listening again in a hurry
Amazing music and lyric writing.
Some absolutely superb songs interspersed with the very forgettable. If this was cut down to a normal album length, I would definitely want to listen to it again! I also appreciate the variety. The rest of the album isn't like the massive singles at all. And what a voice!
Some really hard hitting and emotional songs, especially in the first half. Felt it trailed off at the end but great overall.
Sonically superb - amazing sounding album without any particular bangers of note. Looking forward to listening to this again when the time is right.
Very nostalgic for a millennial like me. The second half wasn't as good as the first though.
Groovin' in deed.
Some excellent tunes and some not excellent tunes.
Perfectly serviceable
Pretty forgettable but inoffensive
I'll be surprised if there is a better album on this list.
Some classic songs but felt the collaboration songs were weaker.
Perfectly pleasant but not much that stood out or songs I would want to listen again.
Phenomenal guitar work and some cracking songs throughout. Good stuff.
I like The Doors but this didn't resonate with me at all.
Some great songs towards the end but too long and too many forgettable tracks.
I found this to be the most moving and emotional album on my list so far. Really powerful stuff and I prefer this style of Elvis compared to the more rock 'n' roll Elvis!
Great beats and rhymes.
Ok.
Not unpleasant. Very long. Not particularly engaging.
Nothing particularly engaging about this at all for me, I'm afraid.
Serviceable.
Some great pop songs accompanied by some naff and some crap.
Almost gave it two stars for its experimentation and pioneering use of synths but my God is this awful.
Just brilliant. Some excellent riffage and the mellow moments don't sound forced or out of their depth.
Very close to a 5 star album. Great use of samples and original music with some great melodies over the top.
Very cool soundscape. Lots of interesting and inspirational sounds for a budding producer. Good songs too.
It was ok. A lot of it forgettable with a couple of decent tracks up top.
Loved it! The really focus in on a particular style that really works for them and they're a pleasure to listen to. Maybe the second half wasn't as great as the first.
Nothing really stood out and it barely jumped out beyond being background noise. Nice background noise though.
Clearly very influential but not as musically interesting or exciting as some other artists of the time.
Some standout tunes. Mostly fine.
A pretty good pop album with a different direction to their previous work for sure. Under Attack at the end was great and very catchy.
The good is great and the bad is pretty dreary.
An excellent listening experience!
Struggled with the first 5 or 6 songs. Really redeemed itself in the second half. Loved Swimming Pool (Drank)!!!
The album tracks aren't superb but there are amazing moments on this album that I found very sonically interesting.
Not unlistenable but pretty dull throughout, I'm afraid.
Definitely is skewed positively by nostalgia but I think the singles are genuinely great and the rest of the album is relatively interesting.
Surprisingly varied, always upbeat and pleasant to listen to.
A very easy listen with some lovely guitar work, lead vocals and harmonies. Definitely worth 29 minutes of your time.
Some good moments but I feel like I will need to revisit it.
Loved a lot of this. Wish Prince would lean into his strengths more (guitar work and epic vocals). But I like the variation.
Closest to a one star so far. Salvaged from the categorisation of unlistenable by a few cool tracks at the end.
Not too much filler or any duds really. The skits at the end of the tracks feel a bit awkward but a superb sounding album overall.
A good listen. Keeps you engaged all the way through!
Brilliant first half. Second half is very forgettable. Why do so many songs involve people's names?
Bernard and Nile are just the best producers. This is a ridiculously good album that sounds incredible. They are incredible and that's before you get onto the vocals - which are also great!
Listened but it didn't really engage me, nor offend me. Some cool riffs here and there.
Loved the tone shift in the album, not something I have heard much on this list even from some of the more experimental albums. A very strong 4.
A strong 3, a weak 4. The songs with the soul samples will live on as classics. The other tracks on this album feel of their time.
Had a few cool riffs and licks but did not really get into any song as a whole. It's like White Stripes / Iggy Pop without good hooks.
Didn't mind this one bit. The 20 minute opener intrigued me and kept my attention and the rest of the songs didn't do any harm.
Production was amazing, all the songs just sat perfectly into my brain and had a strong message. No particular bangers at such but still very listenable.
Great songwriting (especially the music). This album is a classic without a doubt. However, it's very difficult to listen to self-acclaimed nonce Anthony Keidis sing about "girls" so much. Also, what is up with the distortion during the loud bits??? So distracting!
Found this interesting! Definitely very raw and the guitar soloing kept me hooked.
Songwriting, singing and production all pretty superb. A very easy voice to listen to. A very strong 4 stars.
This has so many good songs on it. And lots have been inspired by it but I've still not heard anything like it.
Loved it. Absolutely full of great songs and what else could you ask for from an album? Surprisingly groovy at parts with some great guitar licks as well.
It's main drawback for me is that it almost all sounds very much of it time - that is that it is not timeless... apart from Groove Is In The Heart. Also, the album asks for big beats and the beats feel very underwhelming for most of it. But I did like the track at the end that sounded like Streets of Rage.
Super album! Production value off the charts. Some beautiful guitar, rhythm and vocal work throughout and just always keeps you interested!
I listened to this through my headphones after a few drinks and it was an amazing experience. So many beautiful elements of production coming together to make such cool sounds. I guess in terms of the songs themselves, they are good but nothing stood out too much and there's nothing really earworming this morning.
Evidently peerless. Amazing performance and production throughout. The only doubt I have is every song a "hit" as MJ wanted it to be? It's close but not quite in my eyes. Saying that, the absolute timeless bangers make up for it.
Had low/mid expectations of dreary dad rock but this is a proper album. Sounds great with some serious riffage and soloing. Not fantastic for every minute, but an enjoyable listen.
Didn't see too much of the appeal with this. Songs and performances weren't particular engrossing. Fair play for making that kind of noise in the 60s in America though.
Pleasant enough.
I'm a big fan of Blur but was not a big fan of this. Sounded like a combination of cool Graham Coxon riffs with some proto-Gorillaz tunes but it didn't really work. Apart from Beetlebum and Song 2 of course.
I can see the appeal and there are some great songs in here. I just don't see myself choosing to listen to it on my own volition.
It's beautiful and ridiculously ahead of it's time. I feel lucky to be alive in the same timeline as this album!
Very pleasant to listen to. Needed a little more musically for me to really get my teeth into though.
Awesome beats. Can appreciate there wasn't really anything like it before. The rapping was OK but I did struggle to make out some of it.
Not bad but not great either. Loved some of the vocal production towards the end and there was some cool riffs.
Some great songs on here. Took me by surprise because I hadn't heard about Lupe really. And I didn't mind the 12 minute outro. It gives you a perspective of how many people can be involved in helping a musician becoming successful!
Pleasantly surprised by this. Really nice sounding instrumentation and easy to listen to vocals. Will be checking out more of them at some point!
Brilliant and difficult to listen to in same measure. Maybe that's the point but I don't want to listen to the whole album again. Peaches En Regalia is great though.
Very strong first half. Eddie's guitar simply off the scale, so satisfying to listen to. I found the songs trailed off a bit in quality in the second half but still a good overall listening experience.
Just brilliant! Opens up with 3 dynamic and really catchy tunes and although the rest of the album isn't quite at that level, it stays pretty high up. Love the interesting production sprinkled throughout as well.
Pretty good! Not too many complaints. Great blend of rock, metal and pop!
Really strong. I had a heard bits and bobs of this but when I saw her live, she won me over. Great flow over great original beats. I don't feel this as strong as her next album Sometimes... but still good.
It's ok. It's musically interesting and very well produced but I don't feel the songs are as strong or catchy as some of their better work.
Great voice and generally lovely songs. Just those parrot backing vocals are SO JARRING. I agree with others that it sounds dated and like Disney music and it's not good for an album like this.
Didn't really get much out of this apart from a bit of bopping from La Grange if I'm honest. It's not interesting musically, lyrically or melodically.
He has a way with words and I didn't get particularly bored listening through.
A beautiful swansong. Minimalist but brilliant music spread throughout the relatively short final set of songs from the master. I Can't Give Everything Away would probably go on my Desert Island Discs, what an amazing song.
Very listenable in deed! Some great tracks on there but also some that I zoned out a bit to as well.
Agree with many that this sounds very of the time but it doesn't really detract from it for some reason. One of a kind voice with some cool songs.
It certainly was interesting and eclectic. But maybe I need to listen to it in a better frame of mind to get the most of it, very little resonated with me for some reason.
I don't mind Sonic Youth but I did mind this. Nothing to really get my teeth into but I do appreciate how different this sounds compared to everything else at the time.
I found this album bizarre. I know this was a weird time in the world but I'm not sure who this is for but it wasn't unlistenable by any means. I don't think I'd heard Coconut in its original form before so that was also interesting.
Quite interesting. Every song was quite different. Julian has a cool voice. There were one or two songs that really caught my ear but even without the bonus disc, this is very long!
Very cool and easy to listen to, but not that much more for me.
A classic for sure. Yes it lacks originality but they also have carved their own gritty sound that will live on for generations, this album playing a large part of it. Not perfect, but a great listen.
I quite enjoyed this. Guitar and mandolin work beautifully together with Rod's gravelly voice providing a pleasant foil. Could do with more originals though!
Some of it sounds cool but I could not get into any song at all really!
This was interesting! I had only heard of the one song but everything else sounded strangely timeless, if I couldn't hear the vocals, I would struggle to place this in the 90s. What on Earth were those last two tracks?
Loved the production and the boldness of the lyrics. Lots to love in here in general and lots to get your teeth into. However, there wasn't any song that screamed "listen to me" again but I'm kinda glad I got to listen to it at all.
Easiest 5 I have given so far. Production levels are just unbelievable. Then after 15 minutes or so you just get wall to wall banger. What's not to love?
I thought this was great! One of the albums that has really stood out to me that I wasn't very familiar with before (though I had heard the odd song before). Songs are engaging and I love the drawing of other genres into their sound. This is not uncommon nowadays I guess but at the time I can see this would have sounded pretty neat!
The generator is playing no games today. What an outstanding album this is! Beautiful, minimalist song-writing and melodies. Heart-breaking lyrics. What's not to love?
Didn't click with me much though it's cool that Morrisey went with a much grittier sound. Lots of lyrics complaining about people rightfully calling him out, yawn.
Interesting - never really heard anything like this. But also not many big standout songs. Great production!
It was OK. Big respect to Johnny for doing what he did playing at so many prisons. Some songs were pretty cool but I feel like there will be better JC albums down the line.
It was OK. I'm glad I listened to it because it's a privilege to listen to anything by Bowie but I probably won't deliberately listen to it all again (apart from a couple of songs).
I liked this a lot. Some of the best songs ever written combined with a bit of pleasant enough filler. A very strong 4 to my ears.
Amazing musicianship to say the least. No song really made me take notice and headbang as I thought they might.
It Be OK, but nothing really grabbed hold of me apart from the monologue at the very end and Go!
Yes, interesting music and beautifully produced. Can't help think about the sort of person that would write about falling in love with a 14 year old though.
Even trying to objective for a white supremacist, there's nothing in here I super enjoyed but there were a few songs that made me bob my head.
A classic! Some super songs on here with some forgettable ones too. It just really works.
Just not interesting to me at all. Not bad sounding by any means though.
Yes, cool! Will have to revisit sometime.
Most lyrics, even by the most amazing lyricists/poets, just completely pass me by. I mainly listen to music for melodies and rhythms. But Neil makes me listen to what he has to say. Only maybe Joni Mitchell so far on my list has had this ability. The music is cool as well but he is truly one of a kind and this was great.
Great sound throughout with some amazing songs strewn in. Very pleasant to listen to.
Meh. Music was pretty dull and vocals were pretty meh so not much in this for me.
I found absolutely no joy in this at all.
I liked the variety of style and production, didn't feel like I knew what was coming next. Some uncomfortable moments in there (I guess purposefully) and also what was going on with the volumes of the tracks?
Interesting concept, some quite challenging lyrics. I know it's a rock opera but I would have liked some difference in musical style here and there. Some good tunes dusted around though!
Had some cool twists and turns which I liked. Tbf, I think this could go grow on me and I don't think it was the best album to listen to whilst hungover so I will give it some benefit of the doubt.
Lots to like in here. Tunes that grab your attention and make you listen. Just not quite the finesse / overall songwriting of songs to come from Seattle in future years.
Really enjoyed. Loved the mixture of an old sound with a bigger, more modern production. Will listen again!
Perfectly pleasant to listen to.
Lots to enjoy in here 😀
Excellent, ground breaking, original yet charming.
Pretty incredible. Bold, energetic and pretty original songs that would pave the way for so many other legends. Production wasn't as perfect as some of the other all time great albums but also there is some unreal production (e.g. the Levee drums).
Very nice. Masters of their craft just churning out another excellent batch of songs, not much more to it than that!
Very up my alley. Wasn't expecting such ambience and drama from the music. The lyrics and haunting voice drew me in when usually I struggle to pay attention to those.
Very cool. Didn't love every song but I loved the style of the whole album. Blue-sy but not tired and worn out.
Definitely no one sounds quite like it. I genuinely don't like the distorted drums and the prevalent lack of synchopation (despite these being deliberate?) Some good songs and 'interesting' lyrics though.
Didn't really get much from this without the context of the film. Not bad though.
Nice!
Very sonically engaging! Definitely want to listen to more and this album again!
Thought I would like this more than I did. The lyrics and themes got tired really quickly and their older sounding songs didn't sound very interesting to me.
Great beats, considered rhymes. Very good.
Some good, classic songs like Under The Bridge and Give It Away which I've always liked. But my god is it difficult listening to these lyrics from a self-admitted nonce. I really wanted this album to end about 30 minutes sooner than it did.
Love the simple beats and the flow. Enjoyed listening to this despite not hearing many of the tracks before at all.
Yesssss. Love this. Revolutionary, chill, cool. Just great to listen to.
Outstanding. It just sinks its teeth into from the first chords and doesn't let go.
I'm very grateful that Dave Grohl carried on making rock music. This album seems like a transition from his previous life to his current one and although there are some great moments, particularly near the start of the album, it's not REALLY engrossing.
I liked it. Guitar work was surprisingly superb and I quite like Billy's voice, and what he has to say. A good egg singing good songs.
Not much to get my teeth into after the first two tracks. But some interesting (and variable in quality) production, pleasant vocals and cool guitar.
Preferred the Nicks songs over the Buckingham songs. Still a good listen overall. Sara was the standout for me, really caught my ear and was an earworm for a bit. Liked hearing Fleetwood Mac do something different as well.
Ok. Never really got into it at any stage but it wasn't terrible to listen to.
Yes
Sounds absolutely immaculate. Even when the songs aren't 100% your bag, you have to admit that the production is surely up there for GOAT. Loved it.
Yeah this was a good listen. I liked the vocals up until the last song. He's a lot better at singing nowadays. Got a lot of feel and oomph from just a guitar and a few synths. Good stuff.
There were some absolutely horrible songs. There were some great songs. But it kept me engaged... and difficult one to judge so I'll give it a 3.
A classic for sure. Lots to love. A bit of meh sprinkled in there as well. Love the guitar work, it laid the groundwork for a lot of bands to come!
Some nice songs in there. Good work with guitar and banjo which is nice to listen to. Shame about the guy.
Pretty good all round. Nostalgic to me as well. I wouldn't saying the singing/lyricism makes this album worthy of a classic though. My wife was very annoyed by Romy's bad singing habits which are very hard to unhear.
Pretty rubbish to be honest. Didn't see the appeal of any of these songs but there was some nice guitars. Could possibly improve with a second listen but that won't happen any time soon.
Smashing!
Perfectly pleasant to listen to. Loved some of the guitars, just no real memorable song for me. At least I have had it finally confirmed for me that Cars are, in deed, actually Cars.
First part is just banger after banger. It's more than just dance or electronic music, it feels bigger. Second party sounds like excellent music to kill aliens to.
Had heard of Nick Drake but not much of his stuff. The first half especially was a really pleasant surprise. Great voice and songwriting with big production behind it, very good album.
I liked it. Certainly not enough all female bands, let alone on this list and certainly not at the time.
Not good, not bad. Good to hear a female voice in this genre.
Good, but not great. The album is only as good as its drummer... The big songs are MASSIVE but the album tracks are just meh. I wish I liked this more and I'm surprised I didn't!
Absolutely brilliant. Bass and drums in particular are absolutely inspired. And then you have some great vocal hooks and super brass riffs to tie it all together. Brilliant!
Very pleasant voice from someone I've not heard of. Considering how much Fallout music I've listened to I'm genuinely surprised I've not come across her before. Did not like the scatting at the end.
Noise, not really music. But you know what? There were parts of the album where I got drawn in to a strange rhythm or cool sound.
A classic. Rock music wouldn't be the same without it!
This is pretty naff. I really listened out for enjoyable elements but I couldn't find much tbh.
My god, the phlegm. It's so horrible to listen, I actively wished it to stop. The non-phlegmy stuff is pretty good though.
Yeah this is OK. I'm not sure about the duff notes being deliberate and they're certainly not good to listen to. All other playing is pretty superb. I like the song that sounds like Cruella De Ville
Some great songs, especially early on in the album. But a few duds as well and the production didn't quite draw me in as much as other WS/JW albums.
Some cool songs in here. Not sure about the resentful lyrics. Great production and riffage throughout.
Perfectly fine. I imagine it would be a lot better had you not heard an Adele song because there wasn't much original from her previous work on here at all. Still a great singer and songwriter, no doubt.
More bluesy and even soul-y than what's to come. Loved that last track in particular, that was just fantastic music and it lasted more than 8 minutes!
It was interesting, to say the least. Seems quite ahead of its time. But most of the songs didn't draw me in that much.
First half was a good listen but I lost interest towards the end. Shrek 2 baby!
Nice! At least 3 different languages. The rhythm of the guitsr and drums ept me interested all the way through. What is with that video game noise though?
Sounds so fresh compared to LZ 1. Loved it but some of the songs do outstay their welcome.
Yep, very nice and easy to listen. Percussion and guitar great in particular.
It was OK. Not as hooky as other Sly stuff but a good listen overall.
Pretty good. Nothing gets close to Highway to Hell on this. Air guitar, head bobbing and banging were had throughout though.
This is a strong album. I love the vocal style and melodies. The bass work is innovative and just sits so well with the rest of the music.
Strange but I ended up not hating it as much as I thought I was going to from the first few chords.
I don't really get albums like this. Great singers, producers and musicians putting loads of effort into effectively a cover album. Lovely sound, that doesn't really fit into one box. But I need more original music!
Fuck yeah. No one else sounds like this and it's a great balance of riffage, message, experimentation and power.
Self-indulgent garbage. Still some interesting elements which prevent it getting a 1, but it's close.
Some great songs. Love the heavy guitars and he's a brilliant and unique singer.
Would be 5 stars if the chaff was cut off a bit. Some incredible songs on here of course
Pretty cool. I enjoyed this but not every single sog.
Really nice to listen to. Some of the recordings of the beass were a bit too loud and you could hear this in the production. Also glad to hear that there wasn't much of the annoying backing vocals but there was some...
It was good, groundbreaking. First half especially was really high quality. Really not sure about the second half but I guess it wasn't boring.
Really got lost in some of the songs towards the end. Great album!
Musically very accomplished. Some interesting soundscapes and guitar riffs throughout. Does overstay its welcome a bit but I do want to listen to it again if I ever have the inspiration.
Not absolutely terrible but was willing it to end about 25 minutes in. Interesting concept, Drop The Pressure and In My Arms are great. Rest was meh.
Thought it was going to be more interesting than it was but out of songwriting, production and intrigue... two out of three ain't bad.
Pretty cool. Even the weaker songs on the album had me interested. I guess my main complaint is that it is reliant on collabs but I guess it's just the done thing.
Not quite my new favourite band but still pretty good. (I had heard many of these songs before as well).
Found it pleasant enough to listen to. And there were head bobbing moments. But not strong enough to really get me into it.
Yep it's very good. Love the variety of the songs and not knowing what to expect. Not really any duds on the album which is one of my criteria for a 5 so I think it deserves it.
Very cool. First introduced to this album with Somebody Out There on GTA San Andreas and when I was a little bit older, I ventured to hear the rest and it's pretty strong. The saxophone feels stylish over superfluous and it has a great feel.
Definitely interesting. Definitely standing on the shoulders of giants. But also didn't really like the songs that much. Not bad though.
Pretty awesome. Seems like they invented something here, whilst also keeping faithful to their roots and influences. Think this is my favourite LZ album so far from the list (and I've had a few).
Man I gotta get the lyrics to The Conference.
Great fun to listen to. Great riffs, vocals and beats. Not desperate to listen to much of it again though (apart from My Perfect Cousin).
Didn't really love this. But the groove and the production were really, really good. Sweet Virginia and Tumblin' Dice definitely boost it.
Loved it. A pure joy. Bit concerning that the song that came on next was about a 16 year old not doing what he wanted... but that wasn't on this album.
I really liked it, though Tainted Love, Say Hello... and SEX DWARF did a lot of the heavy lifting. It's fun, raw, they don't care.
The singing of both Boy George and the backing singer were great. Everything else I found pretty drively.
Really didn't vibe with it. Can barely remember anything from it, but it also wasn't unpleasant to listen to.
It was ok, fell a little bit into the background but when I remembered what I was listening to, I quite liked the sound.
I didn't hate listening to this. I didn't love it either. By their standards to come, it feels overly derivative and the production is a bit naff at times. Still cool vibes though.
Like this a lot. Love making rock instruments into dance music, it's very innovative and I found it entrancing at times.
Shame the rest of the album wasn't as ambitious structure-wise and sonicly as Free Bird. But still good.
Absolutely massive. Great songwriting and production all the way through. Will definitely want to go back and listen again.
I blatantly hate women and Jews. Why did my girl leave me? Wah wah fucking wah. Get in the bin... I mean trash can. Still found myself humming along to some of the melodies though.
So long my headphones ran out of battery. I really fancy a pepperoni pizza now.
Awesome. Just awesome. All timer.
Very sad. Got kind of engrossed but didn't massively appreciate it overall.
Very cool. Like funk before funk was a thing (because it's surprisingly un-funky). Still interesting and great vocal/instrumental performance.
An all timer!
Pretty awesome. Love the guitars and drums and they definitely feel ahead of their time. Only issue is it's a bit samey and repetitive apart from the odd moment through the album.
Went for a 50 min run with this and thought it would be less ideal from the description. I was wrong, it was great. Loved the beats and atmosphere. Probably wouldn't like it so much if I was in the car or just sitting down to listen. Could do with a CHOON or two though.
Very listenable in deed. Great sax and guitar work in particular, really lovely to listen to. Will return one day.
Toughest decision on this list so far. Is this 1 or 2 stars? I was compelled to go listen to Beautiful Day again and that is definitely a good song. The rest of the album is complete rubbish though.
Had a lot of time for this and his vocals are some of my favourite from this list so far, especially for a band lead singer rather than a solo artist. Didn't blow me away but it did keep me hooked and musically, of course it's very interesting.
Interesting. Didn't love it. Didn't hate it. Liked the song about zombie dancing. Like a husband-wife combo in a band (because I am too).
Didn't do it first but they did (and still do but to lesser extent) do it best.
As Edna Krabappel would say: "She's faking it."
Great debut album. You can hear so many singers from this point onwards that have clearly taken this album as massive inspiration. Cool album.
Very pleasant. Really loved his voice and guitar work. Very strong for a debut album.
Not terrible. But I really didn't like the vocals which didn't sound bad but just lacked ambition. Liked the jangly guitar work though.
Pretty dull. Couldn't get into it at all.
Rockin' - pretty cool album. Love the boldness for a debut album.
Pleasant enough to listen to. Some iconic hooks and riffs in there that I wasn't expecting.
First half is 6/5. Second half is 3/5. So I guess it's 4.5/5
Loved the songs on the whole. Some absolute classics that will stand the test of time. Some elements of the production I didn't love but it still sounds so cool.
Interesting but not *interesting*. Didn't really get much out of it apart from a few grunge head nodding moments.
I quite liked it and preferred it to the other prison album. I got quite engrossed in his storytelling!
FFO the Hammond organ and funky guitar. NFFO no singing or original music.
Didn't love it. Didn't hate it. Got a bit samey but the same was a cool sound.
Nice voice. Backing vocals way too prominent at times.
Great performance and production compared to other LR or VU stuff I've heard. Amazing songs bump it up from a strong 4 to a definite 5.
My ADHD brain really liked this in parts. The music purist in me not so much. But I guess it was cool overall. Not as good a use of sampling as Discovery by Daft Punk.
I listened to the first 22 minutes of my way to work... grey, cold and it the music didn't do much. I listened to rest after work, in the sun and the music came to life.
I heard so many other (21st century)bands in this album it was incredible. What influence. Pretty good music as well, not entirely my bag but still enjoyable.
This is really cool. Incredible voice with immaculate arrangement. Interesting subject matter. What's not to like?
The production, the synergy, the mellowness was very much giving American Beatles... there I said it! Great record maybe apart from it tailing off towards the end.
Was OK, love the technical guitar and drum work but the songs aren't strong enough to warrant very good status.
Loved it. They create such a distinctive and beautiful sound together, it has to be 5 stars!
Very good album. Emaculate and captivating guitar playing over some Latin beats and riffs.
Memomarably unmemorable. Well made but nothing clicked for me.
Not as hooky or poppy as their best stuff. Really well produced and great sounding, just not that memorable for me.
Really liked the use of melody and rhythm to make really listenable soft rock music. Good stuff.
Very glossy and beautiful.
I can see why a lot of people love this. Great atmosphere throughout and you have to say the vocals are pretty impeccable.
Very strong. Just great musicianship and although it does feel like rock from that era, they very much have their own sound.
Interesting and compelling. A good combo!
Not amazed, not disgusted. Very middle of the road and was expecting more!
First half was so-so. Loved the last few songs. So powerful and ambitious, particularly vocally. Great stuff. Want to listen again!
Some great iconic songs here. A fair bit of filler too. But overall it left a positive impression.
Pretty cool beats, uses of samples and melodies. Nothing really standout but might give it another go.
Superb performance. A bit samy but what the same is is so fun to listen to. Will definitely come back to this.
Just a joy to to listen to (ironically). Seriously absorbing and influential.
Fantastic vibe and production. Really liked the sound but also thought it dragged just a tad.
Wasn't terrible. And that's about as much good as I can say about it. Can hear Beatles and Young inspiration.
The heavy Wes Borland songs are absolutely fantastic and are part of the reason that Limp Bizkit are now a Download headlining band. That guy is a genius. I like it when John Otto takes it to the Matthews Bridge. But my god the other songs are really bad. Just chop out 30 minutes of the problematic and difficult-to-listen to stuff and you have a very good album.
Probably the strongest voice I've had on this list so far with a very good list of songs. I can't believe it's his only one on the list!
Awesome. Loved the jaunt, the creativity and the fact that they are just doing what they love.
Very cool. You can see why they're still selling out arenas today. Big first half, ok second half.
Very pleasant to listen to. Voice like butter. Songs not the strongest but still good and well produced.
Tried to get into it, and there were some riffs and vocal hooks I digged. But as a whole, it's just not that enjoyable.
Each song was a joy to listen to.
Classic.
Loved the groove. The drummer is insane! Didn't love the more maniacal bits.
I liked it. Didn't love it. Love the Americans reviewing not clearly not understanding what tongue-in-cheek is.
A masterpiece. Balances the line between rock and experimental, mainstream and alternative, depressing and uplifting.
Beautiful sounding album. I didn't mind the backing vocals like some people seemed to. Not all the songs are absolute bangers.
Great sound.
Very nice to listen to. Loved the variety in sound throughout the album and from what I've heard from JM before. Production not outstanding but the musicianship is there.
Definitely some interesting chord choices, but I just couldn't get into it at all. I'm not a massive fan of Bon Iver and this was like a worse version of that.
Almost magical at points. Not sure I love the new remaster, the vocals were very piercing at points. But my god, what a strong album.
Got completely lost in it. Good running music. Love the experimentation and fuck what everyone thinks. Record label: What language is this in? Can: Yes
Thought I was going to enjoy it more than I did
Nice to listen to. Just didn't hear much 4 or 5 star material in there. Liked some of the atmospheric stuff in the second half.
Not bad by any means. Just think it's a bit cynical. The guitar riffs lack a bit of oomph and the drums (understandedly) lack flourish. Clearly trying to make a pop record.
Difficult to believe this was made before the 70s. Saying that, some of it hasn't dated brilliantly. Decent album though.
Very strong. A few bangers short of a belter.
The only crumb of enjoyment was from a cover.
Very good. Not quite great.
Was thinking about giving it a 4. Very avant-garde. Must have been refreshing at the time. Just not very memorable for me.
Mainly liked it because they dared to be different and made some great songs in the process.
Simultaneously great and awful. I think if the vocals were done a bit more... stylishly... then you would have a pretty solid album here
Pretty exceptional. Going to be difficult to find some better songs than on side A of this bad boy. Got a bit derivative towards the end, but it's David Bowie!
Not OK
Found myself enjoying elements of it. But I didn't enjoy it as a whole. The songs are long, 6 minut songs seem 12 minutes. The album is long, it felt like 2 hours.
Pretty unpleasant. Production is good I guess. But not a very comfortable listen to listen with my wife. Imagine she thought it was worse.
Pleasant. Resonates today. Feels difficult to be proud to be British...
Really nice to listen to. Great vocals and guitar work in particular. Loved Soubour when it came out and it still slaps.
Interesting for sure. Didn't enjoy it as much as the CAN stuff, maybe he benefitted from that collaboration with the band.
I want to get off the Crazy Horse. Please.
Yeah this was great! Much better than I thought it was going to be!
More pleasant than I thought it was going to be. Good voice and guitar work. Nice variety of instruments rather than being SAME SAME SAME.
