I like the upbeat contrast of 3/5 miles in a second.
Somebody to Love is just an amazing song.
Songs are very short and listenable apart from a couple.
Go To Her and Come Back Baby very strong finish to album
Power out is a highlight, great energy and rhythm.
Lovely vocal melodies and powerful rhythm work throughout.
Some lulls prevent it being 5 stars.
The rocking second half and the superb guitar partnership saved this album for me.
Some iconic vocals as well of course.
Really liked the vibe and the vocals throughout. Just nothing that particularly stands out.
So much invention and creativity, there is just no equal.
However, some songs outstay their welcome a little which prevents it being absolute perfection.
Very well made album. Some absolutely beautiful songs. You can tell they were just stepping out of the convention they were setting.
It feels like it's a frontier of the genre but not enough of the songs really stuck with me.
Very pleasant in the most part. Good changes in tempo throughout the album as well. Just nothing particularly amazing or memorable for me.
Very pleasant to listen to. Superbly well made.
First half was OK.
Second half was pretty great, had some very well made and powerful songs.
Nothing particularly stood out.
Second half of this album was quite interesting. The first half was quite difficult.
A very strong album. Excellent musicianship all round.
A strong second half let down by a frist half with very little substance. Very cool and lovely sounds throughout.
Superb sound, especially his exploding vocals.
Only thing stopping it being a perfect album is the songs following the exact same formula (but what a formula).
A voice and words that command respect. Beautiful.
Some very cool and original songs. A few misses that sound a bit dated but a great sounding album overall
Some decent, listenable songs but a lot of self-indulgent drivel. Way too long and just background noise.
Very forgettable hair rock. The last song was cool though.
A decent sounding album with some very good songs on it. Didn't like it as much as I thought I was going to to be honest.
A very difficult album to listen to. The vocals are grating and flat in many of the songs.
However, I did find a couple of the songs earworming my brain afterwards to save it from being a 1*
I don't think this album was made to be listened in the car on your daily commute.
5* if I were on some psychotics.
Some very cool riffs but very long.
This album really surprised me. Really strong songwriting and pleasant guitar work throughout.
Very feelgood throughout. Great uplifting licks and beats on every track. Shame I have to listen to these cars because it's very dance-worthy.
Shame about him being a p.o.s.
The rockier and more upbeat songs really elevate this album to a great place.
It's not back to back banger but there are some superb songs on it.
Some superb and original sounding songs on it.
Certainly not back-to-back banger and there are some just unpleasant parts to the album.
But also some songs that sound better today than they did back then.
A good album, not great by any stretch. Ash are great songwriters but their style and production make some of songs a little dull.
Love the heaviness of guitars with such a fragile voice!
Some great songs. Can see why there was so much excitement over the band with this debut album.
I absolutely love the "heaviness" they create without loud drums/cymbals or heavy guitars, it's really clever and sounds sooo cool.
My closest album to a 5 so far but not quite every song was super.
Excellent songwriting and performing, can see why this is so highly thought of. Would just need a bit more variety in sound and songs to make it better for me.
This still sounds absolutely massive. Absolutely genius production and arrangement.
The lyrics are of their time and uncomfortable to listen to which is a shame because it will have prevented so many people listening to it and experiencing it.
An excellently produced album and Stuart #1's voice really shines through.
Some really good songs and some OK ones.
Some of the 28 tracks on this are quite decent.
As an aspiring musician, it is good to hear different ways of making albums and this is a good example of something I wouldn't have thought of doing and never want to do, but not totally terrible!
Pleasantly surprised by this. The music isn't as strong as The Smiths but maybe it's not fair to compare them.
This album really does it job and makes you stand up and pay attention to what it's saying which. I generally find lyrics difficult to pay attention to the first time around but this album was different in that regard.
The beats are superb as well with some clever use of vocal samples.
Amazing sound throughout when you listen closely. Some outstanding songwriting as well. Not sure every song stands up well enough for 5 stars but it is very close. Would maybe be 5 on another day.
Pleasant enough album, just absolutely nothing in it which caught my ear.
Absolutely phenomenal. Every song has something about it and this album clearly changed the world of music!
Great vibe with some 5/5 tracks.
A very pleasant sounding album with some great songs. It does overstay its welcome though.
Absolutely superb.
It gets your attention with the brilliant opener Spellbound and doesn't really deviate away from brilliance throughout.
I won't be listening again in a hurry
Amazing music and lyric writing.
Some absolutely superb songs interspersed with the very forgettable. If this was cut down to a normal album length, I would definitely want to listen to it again!
I also appreciate the variety. The rest of the album isn't like the massive singles at all.
And what a voice!
Some really hard hitting and emotional songs, especially in the first half. Felt it trailed off at the end but great overall.
Sonically superb - amazing sounding album without any particular bangers of note. Looking forward to listening to this again when the time is right.
Very nostalgic for a millennial like me.
The second half wasn't as good as the first though.
Some excellent tunes and some not excellent tunes.
Pretty forgettable but inoffensive
I'll be surprised if there is a better album on this list.
Some classic songs but felt the collaboration songs were weaker.
Perfectly pleasant but not much that stood out or songs I would want to listen again.
Phenomenal guitar work and some cracking songs throughout. Good stuff.
I like The Doors but this didn't resonate with me at all.
Some great songs towards the end but too long and too many forgettable tracks.
I found this to be the most moving and emotional album on my list so far. Really powerful stuff and I prefer this style of Elvis compared to the more rock 'n' roll Elvis!
Not unpleasant. Very long. Not particularly engaging.
Nothing particularly engaging about this at all for me, I'm afraid.
Some great pop songs accompanied by some naff and some crap.
Almost gave it two stars for its experimentation and pioneering use of synths but my God is this awful.
Just brilliant. Some excellent riffage and the mellow moments don't sound forced or out of their depth.
Very close to a 5 star album. Great use of samples and original music with some great melodies over the top.
Very cool soundscape.
Lots of interesting and inspirational sounds for a budding producer.
Good songs too.
It was ok. A lot of it forgettable with a couple of decent tracks up top.
Loved it! The really focus in on a particular style that really works for them and they're a pleasure to listen to.
Maybe the second half wasn't as great as the first.
Nothing really stood out and it barely jumped out beyond being background noise.
Nice background noise though.
Clearly very influential but not as musically interesting or exciting as some other artists of the time.
Some standout tunes. Mostly fine.
A pretty good pop album with a different direction to their previous work for sure. Under Attack at the end was great and very catchy.
The good is great and the bad is pretty dreary.
An excellent listening experience!
Struggled with the first 5 or 6 songs. Really redeemed itself in the second half. Loved Swimming Pool (Drank)!!!
The album tracks aren't superb but there are amazing moments on this album that I found very sonically interesting.
Not unlistenable but pretty dull throughout, I'm afraid.
Definitely is skewed positively by nostalgia but I think the singles are genuinely great and the rest of the album is relatively interesting.
Surprisingly varied, always upbeat and pleasant to listen to.
A very easy listen with some lovely guitar work, lead vocals and harmonies. Definitely worth 29 minutes of your time.
Some good moments but I feel like I will need to revisit it.
Loved a lot of this. Wish Prince would lean into his strengths more (guitar work and epic vocals). But I like the variation.
Closest to a one star so far. Salvaged from the categorisation of unlistenable by a few cool tracks at the end.
Not too much filler or any duds really. The skits at the end of the tracks feel a bit awkward but a superb sounding album overall.
A good listen. Keeps you engaged all the way through!
Brilliant first half. Second half is very forgettable.
Why do so many songs involve people's names?
Bernard and Nile are just the best producers. This is a ridiculously good album that sounds incredible. They are incredible and that's before you get onto the vocals - which are also great!
Listened but it didn't really engage me, nor offend me. Some cool riffs here and there.
Loved the tone shift in the album, not something I have heard much on this list even from some of the more experimental albums.
A very strong 4.
A strong 3, a weak 4.
The songs with the soul samples will live on as classics. The other tracks on this album feel of their time.
Had a few cool riffs and licks but did not really get into any song as a whole.
It's like White Stripes / Iggy Pop without good hooks.
Didn't mind this one bit. The 20 minute opener intrigued me and kept my attention and the rest of the songs didn't do any harm.
Production was amazing, all the songs just sat perfectly into my brain and had a strong message.
No particular bangers at such but still very listenable.
Great songwriting (especially the music). This album is a classic without a doubt.
However, it's very difficult to listen to self-acclaimed nonce Anthony Keidis sing about "girls" so much.
Also, what is up with the distortion during the loud bits??? So distracting!
Found this interesting! Definitely very raw and the guitar soloing kept me hooked.
Songwriting, singing and production all pretty superb. A very easy voice to listen to.
A very strong 4 stars.
This has so many good songs on it. And lots have been inspired by it but I've still not heard anything like it.
Loved it.
Absolutely full of great songs and what else could you ask for from an album?
Surprisingly groovy at parts with some great guitar licks as well.
It's main drawback for me is that it almost all sounds very much of it time - that is that it is not timeless... apart from Groove Is In The Heart.
Also, the album asks for big beats and the beats feel very underwhelming for most of it.
But I did like the track at the end that sounded like Streets of Rage.
Super album! Production value off the charts. Some beautiful guitar, rhythm and vocal work throughout and just always keeps you interested!
I listened to this through my headphones after a few drinks and it was an amazing experience.
So many beautiful elements of production coming together to make such cool sounds.
I guess in terms of the songs themselves, they are good but nothing stood out too much and there's nothing really earworming this morning.
Evidently peerless. Amazing performance and production throughout.
The only doubt I have is every song a "hit" as MJ wanted it to be? It's close but not quite in my eyes. Saying that, the absolute timeless bangers make up for it.
Had low/mid expectations of dreary dad rock but this is a proper album.
Sounds great with some serious riffage and soloing.
Not fantastic for every minute, but an enjoyable listen.
Didn't see too much of the appeal with this. Songs and performances weren't particular engrossing.
Fair play for making that kind of noise in the 60s in America though.
I'm a big fan of Blur but was not a big fan of this. Sounded like a combination of cool Graham Coxon riffs with some proto-Gorillaz tunes but it didn't really work.
Apart from Beetlebum and Song 2 of course.
I can see the appeal and there are some great songs in here. I just don't see myself choosing to listen to it on my own volition.
It's beautiful and ridiculously ahead of it's time.
I feel lucky to be alive in the same timeline as this album!
Very pleasant to listen to.
Needed a little more musically for me to really get my teeth into though.
Awesome beats. Can appreciate there wasn't really anything like it before.
The rapping was OK but I did struggle to make out some of it.
Not bad but not great either. Loved some of the vocal production towards the end and there was some cool riffs.
Some great songs on here. Took me by surprise because I hadn't heard about Lupe really.
And I didn't mind the 12 minute outro. It gives you a perspective of how many people can be involved in helping a musician becoming successful!
Pleasantly surprised by this. Really nice sounding instrumentation and easy to listen to vocals.
Will be checking out more of them at some point!
Brilliant and difficult to listen to in same measure. Maybe that's the point but I don't want to listen to the whole album again.
Peaches En Regalia is great though.
Very strong first half. Eddie's guitar simply off the scale, so satisfying to listen to.
I found the songs trailed off a bit in quality in the second half but still a good overall listening experience.
Just brilliant!
Opens up with 3 dynamic and really catchy tunes and although the rest of the album isn't quite at that level, it stays pretty high up.
Love the interesting production sprinkled throughout as well.
Pretty good! Not too many complaints. Great blend of rock, metal and pop!
Really strong.
I had a heard bits and bobs of this but when I saw her live, she won me over. Great flow over great original beats.
I don't feel this as strong as her next album Sometimes... but still good.
It's ok.
It's musically interesting and very well produced but I don't feel the songs are as strong or catchy as some of their better work.
Great voice and generally lovely songs.
Just those parrot backing vocals are SO JARRING. I agree with others that it sounds dated and like Disney music and it's not good for an album like this.
Didn't really get much out of this apart from a bit of bopping from La Grange if I'm honest.
It's not interesting musically, lyrically or melodically.
He has a way with words and I didn't get particularly bored listening through.
A beautiful swansong.
Minimalist but brilliant music spread throughout the relatively short final set of songs from the master.
I Can't Give Everything Away would probably go on my Desert Island Discs, what an amazing song.
Very listenable in deed! Some great tracks on there but also some that I zoned out a bit to as well.
Agree with many that this sounds very of the time but it doesn't really detract from it for some reason.
One of a kind voice with some cool songs.
It certainly was interesting and eclectic. But maybe I need to listen to it in a better frame of mind to get the most of it, very little resonated with me for some reason.
I don't mind Sonic Youth but I did mind this.
Nothing to really get my teeth into but I do appreciate how different this sounds compared to everything else at the time.
I found this album bizarre. I know this was a weird time in the world but I'm not sure who this is for but it wasn't unlistenable by any means.
I don't think I'd heard Coconut in its original form before so that was also interesting.
Quite interesting. Every song was quite different. Julian has a cool voice. There were one or two songs that really caught my ear but even without the bonus disc, this is very long!
Very cool and easy to listen to, but not that much more for me.
A classic for sure.
Yes it lacks originality but they also have carved their own gritty sound that will live on for generations, this album playing a large part of it.
Not perfect, but a great listen.
I quite enjoyed this.
Guitar and mandolin work beautifully together with Rod's gravelly voice providing a pleasant foil.
Could do with more originals though!
Some of it sounds cool but I could not get into any song at all really!
This was interesting!
I had only heard of the one song but everything else sounded strangely timeless, if I couldn't hear the vocals, I would struggle to place this in the 90s.
What on Earth were those last two tracks?
Loved the production and the boldness of the lyrics. Lots to love in here in general and lots to get your teeth into.
However, there wasn't any song that screamed "listen to me" again but I'm kinda glad I got to listen to it at all.
Easiest 5 I have given so far.
Production levels are just unbelievable.
Then after 15 minutes or so you just get wall to wall banger. What's not to love?
I thought this was great! One of the albums that has really stood out to me that I wasn't very familiar with before (though I had heard the odd song before).
Songs are engaging and I love the drawing of other genres into their sound. This is not uncommon nowadays I guess but at the time I can see this would have sounded pretty neat!
The generator is playing no games today. What an outstanding album this is!
Beautiful, minimalist song-writing and melodies. Heart-breaking lyrics. What's not to love?
Didn't click with me much though it's cool that Morrisey went with a much grittier sound.
Lots of lyrics complaining about people rightfully calling him out, yawn.
Interesting - never really heard anything like this. But also not many big standout songs.
Great production!
It was OK. Big respect to Johnny for doing what he did playing at so many prisons.
Some songs were pretty cool but I feel like there will be better JC albums down the line.
