Album Summary

Paranoid is the second studio album by English heavy metal band Black Sabbath, released in September 1970 through Vertigo Records in England and Warner Bros. Records in the US. The album contains several of the band's signature songs, including "Iron Man", "War Pigs" and the title track, which was the band's only Top 20 hit, reaching number 4 in the UK charts. In a 2017 publication by Rolling Stone magazine Paranoid ranked number one on its list of the "100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time". The album is often cited a key influence for the development of the heavy metal music genre as well as one of the earliest heavy metal albums. Paranoid was the band's only album to top the UK Albums Chart until the release of 13 in 2013.

The first half of this album (side 1 probably) slaps, but it runs out of steam after Iron Man. Planet Caravan was an unexpected psychedelic surprise. 3 of the last 4 tracks are filler.

Rate: 20/10. RIP Ozzy.

The greatest heavy metal band ever with the greatest heavy metal song. But.. I feel like the latter half of the album drags a bit. Deserves to be here but the debut is a stronger overall effort

Great great great album, this is Black Sabbath at its peak if you ask me

It’s just such a damn good album. I think the whole thing holds up well on on a full play through, even a couple of the slow songs are a nice break from the manic frenzy of the other songs. I think the hits are so important to me and the battle genre in general, I love it.

1. Classic that melted the music epoch (blues, jazz, psychedelia, hard rock) and created a new one (heavy metal, grunge, stoner, doom, etc) 2. Makes me dissociate, float, head bang 3. Love it, have to buy this album for my audio collection 1. War pigs - anti war manifest, heavy sound 2. Paranoid is super famous, riff and the rhytm are insanely catchy 3. Planet Caravan makes me float in space, just wow, the solo blew me away to the Sun 4. Iron man is insaneeeee 5. Electric funeral is the song that created Electric wizard 6. hand of doom, rat salad, Jack the stripper are good songs

Am I a dad? This eats (bat)

Not for me Liked a couple songs but just not my vibe mostly Didn’t finish

Great album

Pretty cool album.

This is so good! P A R A N O I D

Excellent album, and a great look back on the origins of metal.

Jeg havde allerede hørt mange sange fra dette album, og det er råt og barskt. De stille numre har helt klart også deres berettigelse.

Love love love love love love love love so much love

Pretty easy 5, even if I’m building an irritating association with War Pigs and compilations of Dutch van der Linde

who knew ozzy used to be cool

Iron Man dá um frio na espinha com o estéreo sos TOP 5 War Pigs Hand of Doom Paranoid Fairies Wear Boots Iron Man

I guess I played enough rock band last decade that I like sabbath now

Turns out I'd only listened to a few of the songs on this album. (Yeah, the ones you'd expect.) Those ones are stone cold classics, the rest haven't quite got the same power or are a sign of the times they were written in. So a bit of a curate's egg, but the ones that are immense are soooo good.

Their best album by far Album cover looks so good from a distance

Some of the best riffs ever

“I have come here to kick ass and chew bubblegum. And I’m all out of bubblegum.” They Live (1985)

Varios temas de Black Sabbath que no sabía ni que conocía están en este disco. Me gustó bastante. Rock puro y duro.

A classic.

Legendary. Absolutely incredible, from start to finish.

Extremely overestimated crap

i think both debut and Master of Reality are much more accomplished and distinct, but this is still obviously a solid set of songs. While The Who were maximum R&B , Black Sabbath were heavy, down tempo take on black American guitar music and in this category I am Blue Cheer fanboy. 'Iron Man' is goofy and overrated and overplayed, 'Rat Salad' is a snoozer of a instrumental track, and 'Planet Caravan' crawls along to nowhere. I will say that the first ten minutes or so are definitely good. 'Paranoid' is a great garage-y sounding standalone track that doesn't really need any further extrapolation, BUT you owe it to Sabbath to give them a listen.

The GOATs for sure, and this album proves why.

Probably as close to a perfect album as you can get for me. Genre starting, every song is a hit, War Pigs is one of the best anti war songs of all time. What more can I say?

It’s good - Paranoid and Iron man definitely carry the album, the end seems to drop off a little for me compared to the beginning, but I’ll give it 4 as would listen again.

Bom pra caralho!

Great album, especially for its time. Starts off very strong, but a couple tracks toward the end are just OK.

Utter classic album for the rock boomer generation. Great powerful and imaginative musicianship, some stand-out songs led by the title track.

Yeah, fun if you like that kind of thing, but after the opening couple of tracks, my interest started to wane. Undoubtedly talented but overall not my cup of tea.

YESSSS AMAZING ALBUM I LOVE IT SK MICN 5/5

All time Top 10 album of all time. Grimey, dusty great rock n roll 🤘

A perfect album and without a doubt one of the best rock records ever made. What a compelling band -- every member brings such a unique, creative approach to their instrument. I am not a metalhead but this, to me, is the best metal ever made because it isn't bogged down in the genre's conventions. If anything, they're making psychedelic blues rock and the "heaviness" is almost incidental. I adore Ozzy, and I feel such a strong affinity for his crazed hippie stoner madman persona (certainly much more so than the sex god rock icon persona of some contemporaries).

Now this is Rock.

I liked it because it had the basic energy and excitement of rock and metal, rated at least 3 points, along with some interesting variations

A classic for a reason Very enjoyable by non metal fans

And the way is opened... I am a metalhead. I have made no secret out of this (I say, as if there were any readers to pick up on this; I am screaming into the void), so it should be no surprise I give the crucible of the genre a 5. Paranoid is not Sabbath's first album, so it you want to be technical and official you can trace the metal routes back a bit deeper to the self-title. The self-title established Black Sabbath. Paranoid established metal. And what an establishment it is! This album is certainly worthy of ushering the way in with an opener like War Pigs, a closer like FWB, and a title-track that left generations of adherents to the genre in its wake. Every song does something on this album; there is no fat, there are no wasted seconds. Even the perhaps weaker songs serve a purpose: Planet Caravan will be a much appreciated break for many after such an intense pair of opening songs, and Rat Salad is an incredibly impressive technical showcase doing what Eruption does for Van Halen with none of the fame standing on its own, and that is a shame because even though I hope nobody was doubting Sabbath's technical skill they have it in droves and letting them play unimpeded can never be a bad decision. Osbourne's vocals and Iommi's riffs and sound birthed a whole genre (even if maybe perhaps I prefer Dio's vocals on Heaven and Hell as a vocalist for Sabbath but even I know that's heresy so we keep that between ourselves because Osbourne is Black Sabbath's sound so shush) and rightfully so. These are roots that run deep, and even with generations come and gone since to restructure, rebuild, and reforge metal, the roots still shine brilliantly.

This is the best of their albums I’ve listened to. Most of their famous songs are on here

incredible and groundbreaking from start to finish

its ozzy innit

The very foundation of heavy metal.

What a landmark in metal music history. I don't listen to a lot of metal, but this album is incredible. I first listened to this a few years back, and it didn't really stick with me as much as it did this time. Now, I can appreciate the acoustic pieces in the album, but also adore the heavier, much more metal songs, typical of Black Sabbath. The whole album just has an unmistakable sound to it, something that makes you know that it has to come from this album. Not to mention that every song here kicks absolute ass! Overall, this is such an impactful album in the history of all music in general, and is well deserving of a 10/10.

Nah. Nah. Nah-nah-nah. Nanananananana. Oilers Suck. Every time I hear Iron Man I am reminded of this cultural groundswell that pervaded my hometown acquaintances way back in around 1989/1990. It is so strongly embedded in my subconscious that I cannot stop it from coming out my mouth. Nah. Nah. Nah-nah-nah. Nanananananana. Oilers Suck. Listening to the entire album for the first time in a long time I was struck by how well it would have fit into the 90’s grunge scene. It would have topped a lot of albums that were famous at that time, if I’m being honest. Very nice album and Oilers suck.

I went to a high school where you had to wear a blazer and stand up when all the staff waddled in for assembly. It sounds fancy, but it cost an optional $300 a year thanks to the New Zealand government. As we stood, the school band usually played classical music or the least religious hymns to not jeopardise the government funding. One assembly the rock band (which was one guy), played the riff from Iron Man LOUD. The result was bemusement from the teachers and big, dumb grins on the faces of each and every student.

As someone who isn’t a huge metal fan—and who hasn’t exactly fallen in love with some of the other metal albums I’ve gotten through this project—I was surprised by how much I loved Paranoid. This album is just incredibly well done. It’s engaging from the beginning, the melodies and riffs are ridiculously memorable, and it actually left an impact on me after it was over. What really hooked me, though, were the lyrics. There’s so much interesting imagery throughout this album, jumping from the dark and macabre to science fiction, war, and history. And when you actually dig into what some of these songs are about, there’s a lot going on. “Iron Man,” for example, tells this bizarre little sci-fi story that I found genuinely fascinating. It gave me something to latch onto beyond just the heaviness of the music. The first half of this album is spectacular. The second half doesn’t quite reach those same heights for me, but that’s mostly because the bar was set ridiculously high. It’s still really, really good all the way through. For an album from a genre that usually isn’t my thing, Paranoid completely won me over. Five stars. And, of course, RIP Ozzy.

A dark masterpiece that held a mirror up to the late 60's and showed a world eerily like our own. I grew up thinking Black Sabbath was the epitome of Satanism (maybe it was because of Ozzy biting the head off a bat). Never really listened to them. Hearing them now, I can appreciate what they were doing. And these guys absolutely rocked. The first half may have the best known songs but the second side is just as good. The song "Electric Funeral" is the best post-apocalyptic song ever.

What more to say than this album kicks absolute ass, an all timer of the rock genre. Only war piggies like Trump, Netanyahu and Putin would disagree

One of the best albums 238 albums I've listened to so far. Some of the absolute best metal, hard rock, protest and dark music ever made. Super fun to play and has about as many recognizable licks as any song or album. I got Rage Against the Machine vibes listening to War Pigs. Masterpiece and one of the most influential albums of all time.

i feel like i’m giving 5 stars out like candy but damn if this isn’t a perfect album

I've always been amazed at the musicianship of the first two black sabbath albums. They're good! This one has the hits but I prefer the self titled a little bit more.

damn bro its my first time hearing heavy metal music while studying.. i feel on fire

Ive never heard this album before, and knew cursory songs. Wow! What an album. Absolute bangers and even political commentary. So much for the "satanic panic" that was thrown at these guys.

I'm not much of a heavy metal person, but this album is an absolute classic. Not only is the album brilliant, but it's probably one of the most influential heavy metal albums - if not general albums - of all time. Even with not being a big listener of Black Sabbath, I knew half of the songs on the album because they are such classics. Amazing album and definitely belongs on the list!

En vrai c boen, agréable, et des classique

music is love

Definitely one of the best 'sophomore' albums in the rock canon. It's the sound of a band improving, gaining confidence and the sheer number of rock classics on the tracklist is clear evidence of why there is a Classic Albums programme dedicated to the album. Whether or not it deserves 5 stars or not is a tough one, as I'm aware of Sabbath's seminal position in Metal, but I've never held them in the same musical regard as Zeppelin, Purple or Maiden. I was still very glad to hear it and you really do enter their world. Rough, ready, raw and a revelation in 1970.

Planet Caravan was pretty good but I really don't care for Ozzy's vocal style at all

5 stars.

Five just because it was so much better than megadeath

9/30/26. Consistently great throughout. Knew a handful of songs already, but the rest of the album is loud and exciting. Definitely understand why many people view this as a classic.

Not really a dud on this album, it’s really strong. Lots of hits: “war pigs”, “paranoid”, “iron man” but just a good mix of guitar bass drums and vocals. Hits pretty hard but also melodic.

The first entry where I can say "I've seen them live", and boy it's a great kick-off. Listening to this album's classics like War Pigs, Paranoid, and Iron Man live was a very surreal experience, despite our awful seating. As an album listening experience, Paranoid truly is a great project, having one of the best album openers of all time and some underrated hits like Hand of Doom and Rat Salad. Favorite Song: War Pigs Score: 90/100

atmosferic si cu tranzitii frumoase intre melodii

Liked this more than I thought I would. Iron Man is pretty silly but overall I like the heavy guitar riffs across the whole album. I can hear the influence in a lot of modern stuff.

Don't even need to listen to give this a 5/5. One of the best albums ever created that had a massive impact on ALL heavy music that came after it. There is so much here to enjoy. So many hits. Just fucking incredible. History is here in spades with early Black Sabbath. You owe it to yourself to listen to this through at least once.

Wasn’t a fan of this, but the guitar stopped it from being a 1

Ну не нравится мне ни металл ни протометаол

What can we say that wasn’t been said for Paranoid by Black Sabbath. Absolute classic. The riffs are iconic, Osbourne voice is insane. If you have a high-end setup, it’s even better. 5/5. Already in my heavy rotation. War Pigs / Luke’s Wall : 5 Paranoid : 5 Planet Caravan : 4 Iron Man : 5 Electric Funeral : 4 Hand of Doom : 5 Rat Salad : 4 Jack the Stripper / Fairies Wear Boots : 4

Those early Black Sabbath albums were a huge part of my teenage years, the sound is huge, raw and dripping with power. Ozzy, the untameable frontman, and the thundering energy created by Bill and Geezer, Tony's unmistakeable and unique riffs, together they created a sound that influenced hordes of heavy bands to come. I loved it then and I love it just as much now, almost fifty years later (for me that is). War Pigs, Iron Man and Electric Funeral are amongst their greatest ever album tracks. The title track, conceived at the time as a bit of a throwaway single, came to be one of the most recognised riffs in the history of metal. A five star album all day long.

I don't usually go in that hard for metal generally speaking but if there was ever going to be an exception...

Hell yeah! So heavy, so groovy so psychedelic

Trash, dusty, classic

Another great album from one of the most meaningful bands in the world for me. Always love listening to this one.

Black Sabbath - Paranoid (1970) I’ve been slacking recently, so what a great album with which to return to the challenge. I’ve never listened to this all the way through, but knew about half of the album. Virtuoso playing all the way through, especially the bass and drums. I’m not a metal fan, but this is more blues rock with a metal edge. An easy⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I haven't listened through this album from start to finish in 17+ years. And everyone knows so many of these classic but I actually loved the more unknown sounds way more (over playing the others that's the fun out of them) I complete forgot how epic hand of doom is! Oh my god it's amazing - what a journey

One of my favorite Sabbath albums. This is the kind of record where basically every song has something going for it, and it’s wild how much of heavy metal’s future you can hear packed into 42 minutes. “War Pigs” is still one of the best anti-war songs ever written. Those opening lines “Generals gathered in their masses/Just like witches at black masses” paint such an immediate picture, and the whole song just keeps building from there. “Electric Funeral” is so sludgy that you can practically hear the path toward bands like The Melvins, Acid Bath, Pantera, and a ton of other heavier stuff that came later. Funny enough, I actually heard Pantera’s version of “Planet Caravan” before I heard the original, so that song always had a strange familiarity to it. “Iron Man” is obviously a classic, and “Paranoid” is still a straight banger no matter how many times I’ve heard it. This whole album is basically a blueprint for generations of metal that came after it. Favorite song: “Electric Funeral”

I feel like this album would have blown my mind if I were alive at the time. It still sort of does since it sounds so ahead of its time. Ozzy's voice cuts through a thick, heavy pit of sludge delivering iconic lyrics on some of the most well known metal songs of all time. Paranoid is a very dynamic album with a lot of different styles going on often in the same song. Really well put together. It's hard to compete with the first half but the second half holds up great. The drum solo in Rat Salad was sick. 9/10

Honestly could be a 5 on further re-listens. I understand better now why Ozzy has the legendary reputation he has.

One of the best of all time worth a listen every single time

I slept on Sabbath forevs. I’m glad I finally opened up to them. This is a great album. I love how menacing they sound.

It’s great. No notes. 5/5

429/1089 the ending of War Pigs is SO good, love those guitar riffs I fear Iron Man got overplayed bc of the obvious culprit… it’s still good but has lost its shine imo. Electric Funeral is my fave so far i enjoyed this one, it was well executed but i hopef to hear more stuff that really piqued my interest i’d place it above self titled but below vol 4 faves: electric funeral 65/100
