Don't talk ill of Aretha
Ooooh, I tried to sing along with Aretha in my car on the way to work today but I just couldn't make my voice do the things she can do. It's Magic.
People get ready made me feel things. Groovin’. Aint no way. I vibed with the slower songs a bit more. Beautiful of course.
Her version of chain of fools kicked jimmy barnes’ ass
Another classic helmed by Jerry Wexler and Tom Dowd, with even Eric Clapton and Bobby Womack on guitar and King Curtis on sax along with the Muscle Shoals regulars. Chain of fools, Natural woman and People get ready are the legendary moments on the album, with a host of top notch soul album tracks - short, sweet and timeless. Evidence to prove what people say about her voice - definitely the Queen of the genre.
Despite a few perplexing production choices, I can’t say no to the Queen. Her astounding range sounds effortless and welcoming. Like a mug of milky, warm tea with honey after a long day, Aretha brings you back to life. There is no better soul singer and there never will be. One thing- let’s get Aretha a better album cover than this half-assed one.
The greatest vocalist of all time with another (nearly) perfect album
This shows how my taste in music has changed while doing this project. I started this originally as a solo before restarting in a group 20 something albums in and this was one of the albums I generated. I gave it a 2 lol, don’t know what I was thinking. This album was great. Needless to say Aretha has an all time voice. It’s not one I’m likely to go back to often but I’m glad I appreciated it more second time around. Top Track - Niki Hoeky
Not a go to album for me but I really really enjoyed this. I’m familiar with a lot of the tracks but the rest are just as good. You don’t have to be into this genre to like it, give it a go
If I have a complaint it's that it's too short.
Really just not a fan of Soul. The songs drag on and although her voice is beautiful, there are no melodies that captivate me, and the instruments typically bore me, with the exception the portion of rhythmically diverse bass-heavy songs like "Niki Hoeky" and "(Sweet Sweet baby) Since you've been gone" even in these cases, I find myself hoping the song will pass by sooner than it has. I appreciate what vocal talent Aretha has and the contribution to the genre of Soul she made, but its not for me. 🐢🐢
This is the easiest 5 stars thus far. Every song is a masterpiece.
Great gowns, beautiful gowns
What a voice! So many classics on this album.
Très bien en fond
Some good moments but I realised I have no soul
This might just be the best Aretha album, or at the very least, the best I've heard. The emotionality of these songs is just so infectious, you can literally feel the soul dripping off every syllable. While the covers on this record aren't quite as definitive as say, "Respect," they still provide a uniquely Franklin-ized flavor. As far as soul albums go, you truly can't get much better than late 60s Aretha. Fav Tracks: Chain of Fools, People Get Ready, Niki Hoeky, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Good to Me As I Am to You, Come Back Baby, Ain't No Way Least Fav: Groovin' Score: 9
Her voice is just so good
That’s my girl. Makes my soul light and my brain less mired in the stress of every day, somehow.
Aretha is a once in a generation kind of artist. I absolutely loved this album
as if this was going to be bad
another no-brainer!
Nice, never really sat down to listen to Aretha. Obviously iconic and impactful in the culture and music in general, so I'm happy this is on the list. Obviously, her vocals are incredible, but another thing I'll note is that the bass lines are pretty sweet on this album. Final thoughts: really nice, refreshing listen, but tbh not really something I'd go out of my way to listen to?
Exceptional album. Amazing vocals. Every song is a winner
4/5
Ladies hole??!
Not my style
It's a very good album. Classic r&n as ot should be. Aretha at her prime and great arrangements and musicality. Love the backing vocals and bass especially. On track 7 a young Eric Clapton's guitar appears wich is great always. It'll be a classic 3.5 It's a great album but it turns out to be not my favorite genre. In which way? In the why it intrigues me and surprises me. Masterful recordings that I know how they sound before I even listen. It might be my problem, I know.
Love songs, true raw feelings. Soul in its purest form. Jazz influences in some tracks. Favorite track - Good To Me As I am To You/ Ain't No Way
😜
A five star voice in an album that's got enough hits and a few solid album tracks
Fabulous album, fabulous voice. Something I should make a point to listen to more often.
Loses a star because it mostly is a cover album, as a lot of these soul albums are, but Aretha is able to elevate these songs to another level, hence why a lot of the tracks are recognised as her songs.
The bass beats and AR’s amazing are electric
A fantastic Lady who put out some excellent music.
Just great.
Cmon now!! Might be the epitome of a perfect album. 10 tracks, 30 minutes, and a range of emotion on each track. Digestible, but warrants repeat listen to pick up on all the great nuances between Aretha’s singing and the music.
I’ll rated the other Franklin a 2. I’m here to atone for my sins. Flat 4
It was fine, though it seemed like a collection of average songs with one or two standouts, rather than everything being good.
6/10
Banger
Todo el mundo debe escuchar a Aretha en su vida, pero yo no pondría este disco en la lista lol
Aretha !!! blues brothers commitments Amy c
Finally a classic. It was amazing to read that this was her 12th album, released 1968! How many bands or artists have done 12? How many remembered by most 58 years later? So long ago, but everyone knows of her performances still to this day - for good reason. It's not possible to vote this down.
I'm not super familiar with Aretha's work past RESPECT and Chain of Fools, but I always knew she was a phenomenal singer. I can't say I resonate with the Gospel stuff in any way but she is an undeniable talent and all of the songs on this are just so fun to listen to or really showcase exactly what the genre was about, soul (Good to Me as I am to You is a prime example of this). I will definitely be listening to Aretha from now on.
Previously known. She's the queen for a reason.
Nice
Aretha, holy shit. She's like listening to the voice of the universe. When Natural Woman started I had to switch my desk to standing mode. Listening to this, I feel like I should be painting a ceiling, not pushing pixels.
Arethas voice is just amazing, one of the best. At the end of soul R&Bs peak, this is one way to go out. 84/100
Heard some. Pretty cool, nice short powerful soul songs. Sort of cosy 60s sound. 4 Heard before? Some Owned: No, 109/437 (25%) Will I get: Maybe
prima leuk
I mean... this isn't my thing, but it's damn good.
this genre is not suitable for me and mostly i like only a couple of songs from this genre. the first song is pretty cool and i will definitely add it to the playlist. the album is beautiful and i am one hundred percent sure that i will listen to it again
okey
Love Aretha. Solid album but not her best. Maybe top 10 album during that time period though
day 9 of not rolling Aja by Steely Dan today is the first day since i started my count that i feel somewhat disrespectful complaining about not getting aja because aretha franklin is an absolute queen. sry aretha franklin. but i have to keep count. a classic (and supremely excellent) soul album for the ages. speaking of ages, it is ageless. in twenty years people will still be saying this album rules. and they're right! it fuckin' rules. i admit i'm actually not a huge fan of the opener, but the rest of the album (respectfully) fucks. "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" might be her greatest song ever, although there are one or two others contending for that spot
Classic, but certainly not perfect. The disparity between the highs and lows (which are still pretty good) lost a star from me
Stellar. Still don’t really consider it an album or see any reason that these specific songs need to be heard in this specific order.
Chain of fools is such a good song. Aretha really had THE voice she was incredible. All of the songs so beautifully crafted around it. 4.0/5.0 Best Song: Chain Of Fools
Not something i would listen frequently but i really enjoyed the vibe and messages.
Natural Woman is transcendent.
Rainy day in Austin making everything muddy and sticky. The heat has broken but the humidity has stayed. The air is thick with too much water flvspor and the sky is a deep shade of slate. The rain and storms are expected to continue for the next few days and although we undoubtedly needed it to occur after the last two months of hot summer drought, the idea of staying inside for so long seems daunting in the post COVID years. I'm thankful I got Aretha and specifically Lady Soul this morning to bring some joy into this day
Such a voice. And great arrangements.
Vibe: 70s' movie soundtrack - once upon a time in hollywood - ice-cream eating and corduroy pants Feels like: summer, easy life, community, peace Time of day: saturday morning, waking up in a good mood Songs saved for later: 1 - (You make me feel) like a natural woman
Gillade det Aretha har en otrolig röst men albumet försvann lite in i bakgrunden.
Hermoso
Oo baby
it was good, soul isn't really my thing though.
My stars, this was such an amazing listen through! This deserves all my praise! Simply lovely...
What a voice!
Sounds like Franklin stepped away from the mic, as a horn would. The result is the perfect balance of instruments, backup singers, and vocalist performing soulful songs, one after another.
Queen
Tres bien
Yas Queen!
Yas Queen
My goodness, what album. Too short!
Fabulous. She is the tops.
It’s the Queen of Soul, so the floor is pretty high. We all know what Aretha sounds like, she has one of the best voices of all time, and this was a lightning-fast listen (29 minutes). What’s not to like?! Strong 4/5
Fantastic album! What more can you say
Lady Soul - Aretha Franklin Great great voice. A non-skip album too. Every track is as thrilling and engaging as the rest. It never runs out of steam, thanks to Aretha's relentless vocal performance, and its very solid selection of songs and instrumentalists. 5 songs out of 10 are covers, and the remaining 5 were first sung by Aretha herself and sometimes cowritten by her, and each of them manage to become a standard . Thanks to the alternation of the very upbeat Chain of Fools, Money Won't Change You, Niki Hoeky, Since You've Been Gone, Come Back Baby and the ballads People Get Ready, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Good to Me as I Am to You, the album never loses its lush and its groove and never becomes boring. This alternation also evidences Aretha's greatness as an interprete, on both vocal and emotive levels. Ain't No Way is a perfect coda for this rather ideal album. 9.5/10
Prefiero a esta Aretha que la del disco anterior de esta lista, WOW. Qué vozarrón, qué poderío. Canciones favoritas: Chain of Fools, You Make Me Feel Like] A Natural Woman, Ain't No Way
Good soul album from an iconic singer. I enjoyed listening to this
3,5
Amazing music. Extraordinary vocals. 4.5/5 on first listen, and it could become a 5/5 with another full listen.
Absolutely stellar. No doubt 5 stars.
Fun energy throughout. Like her sound.
just incredible
Not my music but class is class. Definitely the Lady of Soul
Normal
Really powerful voice. Love the warmth in the band sound too.
It's Aretha and it's an absolute classic! Chain of Fools and Good to Me as I Am to You are my highlights.
What a voice, class
This is nice
Aretha is the First Lady of soul
Good stuff.
She’s incredible
R&B, soul.
Proof that you can find an objective 5 star album even if it's a subjective 3.
absolute classics start to finish
well she didnt lie
