Lady Soul

A pretty spectacular mix of soul, gospel and blues. Loved it. Some tracks are just better than others, as is always the case, although the smash hits here are steps above some of the album tracks and I could have done without the god stuff. I'm aware of how silly it is to praise gospel music and not want god stuff, but there we go. Aretha has a great voice and brings a huge energy to these tracks. I prefer the upbeat stuff generally, but it's all enjoyable.

The Queen of Soul indeed! So many great songs on this album.

Aretha is absolutely in command here. This is 1968, right in her imperial Atlantic Records era, and the album is basically a masterclass in soul singing: gospel power, R&B groove, pop control, emotional authority, and that feeling that every note has lived a whole life before it leaves her body. Fuck! What a queen man. Fantastic album! 5 stars.

Not my type of music. Good, but I’m probably never gonna listen to it again. Except Groovin’. Banger.

Aretha Franklin proved that she is quite easily the best singer to ever exist here on this project. With so much emotional soul and energy resonating off the songs on this project it's easy to get swept up and captivated by its Southern swing and classic vibe. Easily one of the best of its genre.

Searching my favorites by years lists I don't find anything from this album though, nor, anything from Aretha at all. The reason for that is, for the most part, she did not write her own music, or if she did, those songs did not make the cut. After : ======= Pretty sold 4 for me.

You can't go wrong with some Lady Soul. Apart from the obvious killer tracks [Chain of Fools , (You Make Me Feel Like) a Natural Woman], I'd say the best tracks is Come Back, Baby.

I thought greatest hits albums weren't allowed? Wait...what? This isn't a greatest hits album? Could have fooled me. This is a tremendous album. Aretha even made me enjoy a song I've always hated ("Groovin'") plus, the best version of "People Get Ready". Brilliant album.

Compared to I Never Loved A Man, this one has a slightly lower rate of megahits, with probably just "Chain of Fools" and "Natural Woman" meeting that criterion. Wow, only 2 of the greatest tracks ever recorded, what a letdown. But a big part of the reason to listen to an album like this is because of the gold that lies just outside the excavation site of the greatest hits compilation; this is very far from being a mere case of the "one hit and 9 tracks of filler" approach that plagued the album era. "People Get Ready," "Ain't No Way," the long version of "Chain of Fools," and several other cuts are just mind-obliteratingly good even if they break the 2 minute and 45 second formula and are only 90% as radio-ready as the megahits. What even is there to say about the music itself? The band is tight as hell and Aretha is Aretha. Very easy 5 stars.

This is a hard one for me. I don't want to give it a 5 as I know her best work is to come, but this was her most important work- and it was transformative. She the Queen of Soul. May she rest in power.

She has one of the best singing voices I’ve ever heard. This album is super groovy. It has timeless songwriting. I think it represents this era and genre as well as anything I’ve heard. My favorite songs on first listen were Sweet Sweet Baby and Groovin’, although every track is very memorable and I have You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman stuck in my head like crazy. The writing credits on this album are very impressive, speaking of which.

Just a good time. Nothing but bangers. I truly believe no matter your music taste you'd find something to smile about when listening to this. Also goes without saying but Franklin has one of the greatest voices ever and it's on full display here.

Aretha was on point this morning for my walk. I have listened to this album many times. Nothing particularly exciting stands out about it but the album is a solid choice.

I’ve had quite a bit of underwhelming soul on this list, but this is an example of what the genre can be. Franklin’s voice is brilliant and gives great emotion to the tracks, notably the iconic (You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman. People Get Ready was probably my favourite of the early livelier tracks. I probably didn’t enjoy it quite enough for 5, but a very strong album.

A very enjoyable selection of well-crafted, soulful, and sometimes funky songs. Aretha Franklin’s voice is of course exceptional, but the backing band are tremendous also. A strong 4.

‘Rolling Stone’ magazine’s lists are pretty notorious, but I can absolutely see why they twice named Aretha Franklin the greatest singer of all time. She could sing the phone book and make it sound extraordinary. That said, while there are some true classics here (‘Chain of Fools’ and ‘Natural Woman’ especially), some of the other material, while still good (with absolutely no duds), is probably not quite good enough to take the album into 5 star territory for me. And as with Aretha’s other album on this list, I’m left questioning whether the various covers are better than the originals.

From the sublime Chain of Fools to the simply perfect Natural Women with gospel and dancefloor stompers in between, this is absolutely an album deserved of its place here. I was surprised at how many bangers were on it that I already knew. Chock-full of classics.

Lady and Queen. This one was over too fast but then the algo rolled into some seriously solid jams.

Another banger from the queen. The greatest singer we've ever seen, imbuing everything with power and emotion, surrounded by crackerjack musicians (including, famously, Eric Clapton on "Good to Me as I Am to You") and backup vocalists, including her sister Carolyn Franklin and Cissy Houston (Whitney's mom) and produced by Jerry Wexler, who makes it feel as energetic as a live performance. This is how all soul albums should be made. A certified classic.

Timeless

I immediately get in a nice soul vibe in the first song! Het voice gets you from the first seconds. The album represents girlpower, for example in the songs chains of fools, good as me as I am to you and money won’t change you. In my eyes, they talk about the independence of the women in that time. The instrumentation is sooo great! I love the trumpets and jazzy guitar fragments, they seem to tell a story! The gospel choir fits her voice and the songs! Her voice on its own is actually already enough to make the song impressive! Especially the song ‘people get ready’ or ‘Good to me as I am to you’ is a great example of this. You could actually give almost every song as an example hahah. Also the instruments of course! However, I am not immediately enchanted by some tracks it but still are convincing enough. A lot of the songs are also just very fun and good to dance with, I can already imagine the people back then doing it. The instruments go from guitars, to violins, to trumpets, to tubas (which sounds very good on Natural Women). So the album is surely not boring. What sticks with me after listening is the feminism she puts into her songs. In might be indirect but I don’t think it was easy to express individualism as a woman back then! I’ll remember her voice and the amazing soul, jazzy instrumentation! It is also fun a I want to dance on so much songs! Favourite song: Since You’ve Been Gone

God Mother of Soul this has some classics on here her voice pops it's a great album with some great backing instrumentals that compliments everyone and everything

That's how soul/R&B is supposed to sound, not the watered-down autotuned shit that's currently being produced. This isn't really the kind of stuff I'd run out and buy, and I wouldn't put it in my top 1000. But I can see how others would rate it very high.

I’m sure it’s sacrilegious to say, but despite Arerha Franklin having a phenomenal voice the only exceptional composition here is the hit song A Natural Woman. The rest is a comforting, easy listen by a talented performer, but nothing that gets me overly excited.

A fantastic voice and I enjoyed 'People Get Ready' and 'Ain't No Way' especially. Did mot like rhyming 'Hoeky' with 'Pokey'. Go figure. Not my go-to genre and while I won't listen habitually, credit where it's due. Also not sure of the value of the bonus tracks on this (and many other albums). They're just slightly different versions of tracks I'd previously heard

She’s amazing… but it’s really not my thing!

This feels like a huge leap forward from the previous Aretha album I heard on this project (I Never Loved a Man the Way I Loved You). This one is chock full of classic songs, great instrumentation, and -- most of all -- her astounding voice. A Natural Woman is clearly the highlight here -- just a brilliant arrangement designed perfectly to anticipate that soaring chorus. Minor quibbles: I can't hear Groovin' without thinking of the superior arrangement by The Young Rascals, although she puts a different spin on it that isn't bad. I could definitely do without the Curtis Mayfield number, "People Get Ready," as well. Her lone writing credit, Since You've Been Gone, is another highlight, as is the indomitable Chain of Fools. Everything here is at least a pretty good listen with enough variety to keep it interesting through the brief runtime. I could easily listen to this twice through, where most double albums are a slog to get through once. Great stuff.

Aretha Franklin’s one of those artists where you’re like “yeah yeah GOAT singer, I know” and then you actually listen to one of her albums and you’re like “oh genuinely no one has ever sang this good and no one ever will.” Natural Woman is one of the greatest pieces of recorded music ever. People Get Ready always makes me wanna cry. Ain’t No Way took my breath away.

Simple but effective production. Again biggest complaint is i wish it was longer. Better production on sweet sweet baby. Another banger. Really catchy chorus. Love the horns again. Slowing it down again on good to me. Awesome guitar to open it., and throughout. Best part of the song aside from the singing. Come back baby was fine. Nothing really noteworthy about it. Sick organ on groovin. Really good song writing again. Ain’t no way is very emotional. Really good writing. Nice piano. Good song to close out with. Really impressed by this album, fully understand the Aretha hype. Just a wonderful vocalist. I recommend listening to this album if you never have before. Top tier soul music. 4.4/5 stars. 5 more songs as good as what’s on their and it’s a 5/5.

What an amazing voice, most of these songs are great

I loved, loved, loved the funkier soul stuff like “Chain of Fools,” “Come Back Baby,” and “(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You’ve Been Gone.” Also, of course, “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” I liked the slower songs, but on a second listen I found myself skipping ahead on some of them when they were half-done. Still, what a voice she had! Must have been amazing to see live.

Quintessential soul. Obviously “You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman” is an all time classic. Chain of Fools felt like the perfect opener and it set the tone for the remainder of the LP. Aretha’s voice is unmatched and the energy she puts into this is remarkable. Really easy listening while also staying interesting. I had to listen to “Here’s Little Richard” before this so anything following that album will sound this good, but Lady Soul is a timeless work by one of the best to ever do it.

Day934 - so good i listened twice

Good and very enjoyable. Probably not my favorite, mostly because it's in an older style that I'm not used to, but I understand why it's so highly acclaimed. Very refreshing hear, with some songs, like "(Sweet Sweet Baby)..." and "Good to Me as I Am to You" being very lovely.

10 songs, 30 minutes and Lady Soul tellin' you how it is. This chain of fools linking two and two and two, maybe you find one of those links is you. Maybe time is taking you on or maybe you can hear all the other ways this record bops — people get ready there's a train a comin' (and it's on twin tracks of focused songwriting and powerful singing).

fucking fire, honestly, makes time fly by because her voice is insane and the backing instrumentals are so full of life. She's great. This is definitely a part of music history and it's such a quick burst of musical energy that I do think it's something everyone should hear at least once. Like if aliens came down to this earth, this would be a good first piece of music to show them. I think it has to be a 5/5. it's probably as close to vocal pop perfection as you can get.

When you say soul, you say Aretha. When you say Aretha, you say soul. Miles above the rest. Aretha is a force of nature gifted with a voice that can split a rock. This record, produced by the legendary Jerry Wexler, has some of her best known songs like Chain of fools and (You make me feel like a) Natural woman and there is not a dud on it. All hail the Queen.

I'd like to call myself a fan of Aretha Franklin, but I can't, in fairness, because, embarrassingly, I have to confess that I wasn't familiar with this album. I own copies of I Never Loved a Man... and Aretha Now and Spirit in the Dark and Amazing Grace on vinyl and somehow I haven't even listened to this. That's an embarrassment, because I feel like it might be my new favorite. It's so freaking good. Her voice, just top form. The band, loose and chill and hot when it needs to be, just a great performance. So I already reviewed I Never Loved a Man... last month and praised it appropriately, and now have this one done, so I checked to see which other albums are left because the greats---you know, like Elvis Costello, Aerosmith, Blur, Morrissey---the greats ! (/s) all have like at least three (or seven?) albums on the list. RIGHT?! So there's at least two that mentioned above that could be included, but I was hoping maybe it would be another one I'd missed that I know some people claim to be monumental. Nope. I've finished all the Aretha on the list? That's just stupid. I've got four more Damon Albarn albums to go, though. Hey did you know that Slipknot has two albums on the list, same as Aretha?

Aretha Franklin was 25 years old. She recorded three albums in 1968 alone. Martin Luther King was assassinated in April of that year, Robert F. Kennedy in June, and America was watching cities burn on the evening news while simultaneously making Lady Soul her second consecutive number one R&B album. Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithfull, who were at the time the most famous couple in swinging London and had opinions about everything, summarized her voice as follows: Aretha is the voice of God. This was not hyperbole. This was a weather report. The album opens with Chain of Fools, which arrives on the back of Joe South's Gretsch guitar tremolo like a physical object coming through the speakers before Aretha has sung a single word. This is the correct way to open a record for someone who needs a great musical arrangement to fully commit, and Lady Soul understood this assignment before the term existed. The horns are enormous. The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section is so tight it should be studied in universities. Eric Clapton appears as a session musician on one track, behaves himself professionally, plays well, and leaves without incident, which at this point in our series constitutes remarkable personal growth. A Natural Woman was written by Carole King, who I gave 3 stars to, based on a title coined by producer Jerry Wexler, who handed it to Aretha and watched her turn it into something so far beyond the original that calling it a cover feels like calling Niagara Falls a puddle. Carole King later watched Aretha perform it at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2015 and was visibly reduced to tears in the audience. This is the correct response and also the most accurate critical review of what Aretha does to other people's songs. The album runs 29 minutes and 51 seconds. It contains three top ten hits and a fourth that made the top twenty. It influenced Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, and essentially every female vocalist who came after it. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone routinely places it among the greatest albums ever made. Whitney owes it a tithe. Beyoncé owes it several. Soul music from 1968 is not my most natural daily listening habitat. And yet Lady Soul hits with a physicality and an emotional directness that bypasses genre entirely. This is not a record that asks for your patience or your historical context. It grabs you by the lapels in the first eight bars and does not let go for half an hour. R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Find out what it means to me. It means a 4. 4 out of 5. One star for Chain of Fools, which arrives like a freight train with impeccable taste. One for A Natural Woman, which is the greatest thing anyone has ever done with a Carole King song including Carole King. One for the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, who are the finest collection of musicians to appear in this series and who deserve every accolade they have never quite received. One for Aretha Franklin, who was 25 years old, recorded three albums in a single year, and still found time to be the voice of God. The fifth star exists somewhere in the universe but belongs to Aretha alone and was never ours to give.

After finishing this album, I started on two more of her's. What a wonderful voice; I really enjoyed her version of Groovin', but all the tracks are solid.

(5/5). Bow before the Queen. For all my lamenting that the great Diana Ross and her vital work with the SUPREMES is criminally absent from this list, Dimery and Co couldn't ignore this woman. It's like trying to deny there's a sun in the sky or that the sky is blue. You can't have a list of vital and important music ('listen before you die') without her in it. Her voice and her control of it should be governed by the Geneva Convention. It's a weapon that strikes deep into your soul. This is -- sadly but not unexpected -- only ONE of TWO of her albums on the list. For comparison, that wanker Morrissey gets FOUR (that's just his fucking solos, and excludes his work with other groups...). His pompous ass can go get bent. This woman SHITS better music than most of the Morrissey-types on the list and it looks like she's just here as a quota. Enjoy it, relish it, soak in the soul of it. She was a once-in-a-lifetime talent and we're all better off having her music in the world. This is as good as we'll get in this category. Plenty of hits on this one and even the other tracks just ooze soul and feeling.

The queen of queens, Aretha earned all of my R-E-S-P-E-C-T the first time I heard her amazing voice, and this one is just bursting at the seams with hit after hit. No need to drone on and on about how amazing this one is, I'm just going to go ahead and drop her 5/5 and press play on it a third time!

Lady Soul - Aretha Franklin (1968) 7.14.26 Variety: 5 Adequacy: 5 Listenability: 5 Uniqueness: 5 Emotionality: 5 = 5.0 Just a day after getting Hames Brown's Live at the Apollo album ( there's even a Brown penned song on here!), we get another titan of R&B and soul in the estimable Ms. Franklin. She's another legend that everyone of my generation grew up listening to even after her arguable rime had been a good couple decades before. She still remained relevant, unlike a lot of those 60s greats by continuing to put out new hits well into the 80s ("Freeway of Love", "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves", "Who's Zoomin' Who?") and then very late in her career becoming the de facto Diva Laureate of these United States, and even had a Billboard charting hit on the year of our lord 2014! While I've never been an Aretha obsessive, I've always admired her talent, and the hits she gifted to us are pretty unimpeachable. This album in particular is a MASSIVE blind spot in my music education though (I have heard a lot of these before, just never in a full album experience), so I'm not exactly sure what t expect, other than we're in very capable hands. THE TRACKS A Side "Chain of Fools" - Wow. What a stunner of an opening. Here we get a powerful bit of realization about a lover's .... indiscretions, and reaffirmation of strength and determination in spite of betrayal. I may be reading this wrong, but I get the impression that she's decided to use this guy up, just like he think's he's doing to her. And when that chain breaks, she's going to shrug it off. Maybe not so him though. It has lost none of its charm after maybe the 70 or 80th time hearing it. The tremolo heavy guitar licks, and the top tier backing vocals underline Franklin's vocals that are already absolutely DRIPPING with attitude. She does that like no other in my opinion, and is one of the keys to her appeal. She commits SO hard, and with the pipes to back it up that you actually believe whatever sentiment she's passing along in her songs. My favorite part is the breakdown at 1:20. It's the perfect punctuation on a perfect song. That's a are thing even among the pop music gods. Off the top of my head ( I'm sure I'm forgetting some big names) I'd put her up there with Marvin Haye, Freddie Mercury, Whitney Huston ( whose mom provides backing vocals here, and who is ALSO the aunt of Dionne Warwick!), and Robert Plant as one of those beings of pure charisma that were able to trick you, even momentarily, into feeling what they feel. This is the special sauce, y'all. Soak it in and revel in it as there's not a ton of it on the list. "Money Won't Change You" - Something of a breakup song I think, with a fairly universal message that you can't buy happiness with money. Simple enough, and the James Brown original plays this pretty straightforwardly, and is delivered in a very callous and singular fashion, where he tries to throw it off like he doesn't care anymore. Franklin changes the lyrics ever so slightly, and it becomes a much more regretful headshake of a tune, lacking the bitterness and resentment of Brown's version. I like both versions, but the backing vocals that mirror her interior thoughts and the more casual arrangement beat out Brown's sweaty and desperate bit of self-trickery. "People Get Ready" - My ( and most everyone's probably) favorite popular gospel song. A true stunner on an album of stunners and one of those songs that makes me regret just a tiny, tiny bit not believing in any sort of afterlife. Cause, man who wouldn't want these images of communal love, acceptance, and peace to be the ideal? Seriously though, if I ever make one of those late stage, just before desperation conversions just before I die - play this at the end of my funeral. That'll get them tearing up as they shuffle out of the funeral home. Beautiful and I think, the best version (just beating out the Chambers Brothers version imo) of a song that has a TON of great versions, including the original Curtis Mayfield penned Impressions song. A bit of lightness and an already bright and soulful album serves as a nice little rest spot. No one's putting this on Ms. Franklin's greatest hits ( that's a bald-faced lie, as it appears on a few I think), but it's a good time. Someone needs to hook poor Niki up with Amos Moses and see if there's a love connection to be made. "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" - When we ( somewhat) recently listened to Carole King's Tapestry, I mentioned that both versions of this song exist simulstaneously as the iconinc versionm but I gave that one the edge. Just. Man, listening back again to this one I'm beginnning to doubt myself. The sweeping, uplifting strings at 1:47 and the divine backing vocals throughout, in addition to Franklin's strength makes this one sail in ways the original just can't. King's version feels so much more vulnerable, and solitary. I picture her singing it next to a window that's looking out into a rainstorm the whole run time. But in Franklin's version, when the bridge hits, the sun bursts through the clouds and the rain evaporates into brightness and triumph. Damn, we're in a tight spot. I think maybe one for sad days, one for happy. You pick though, I think either would work for whichever mood. B Side "(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone" - While not necessarily known as a prolific songwriter, Franklin penned or co-penned many great songs ( the two here with her husband), and this is a great specimen. I'd go so far as to say that interpreting and re-arranging a song, especially when you improve upon it, counts as writing though. This funky bit of Memphis soul is a pretty blistering example of her talents in that regard, and I think has maintained it's place as a minor hit for Franklin. Solid. "Good to Me As I Am To You" - Franklin slows way down to stuff about 100lbs of soul into a 10lb blues bag. This is a good thing. And we get a guest spot from Eric Clapton, who is as tasteful and restrained here as Franking is gloriously unbound by the chains of the genre. Excuse me while I dip out to give a full listen to Aretha Sings the Blues before coming back to finish this one out. "Come Back Baby" - A great, driving makeup song, and a textbook example of how a blues song can be transformed int a wailing, raucous, swinging R&B rave up. The life and energy on display here is only barely rivalled by the staid and mournful Ray Charles version. "Ain't No Way" - Franklin sticks teh landing with another gospel inspired number, written by Franklins little suster Carolyn, and featuring Cissy Houston's supernatural sounding high regster. The song buildsm and builds in layers before fading out and leaving us wanting more. HIGHLIGHTS - "Chain of Fools" - "Money Won't Change You" - "People Get Ready" - "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" - "(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone" - "Good to Me As I Am To You" - "Groovin'" - "Ain't No Way" MIDLIGHTS - "Niki Hoeky" LOWLIGHTS - Ha! FINAL THOUGHTS Turns out I have heard everything on here at some point, just never all together in order. And just as expected, there was barely anything worth mentioning that did not deliver. Even the lone "midlight" here is a blast, and only suffers in degree of heft when compared to everything else around it. This is one of those occasions where I find myself unable to offer up any kind of devil's advocate arguments against an album's all time beloved stature. Whether it be the Rolling Stone Top 500 at the 41st greatest album of all time, or one of only two (!) entries for her on this list, the accolades are well deserved. Aretha Franklin will be one of those voices who, along with the Beatles, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, and a select few others, I think will live on into the next century or two as exemplars of the popular music of this era. She never fails to deliver, and might possibly have the perfect career. At least more so than anyone I can think of outside of Paul McCartney ( and maybe Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder), she got to actually live during and on through her status as a an unassailable legend. Album #142 Aretha Franklin - “Lady Soul” 5/5 So yesterday had James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, today we get Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul. Everyone bend the knee when this Queen enters. Now throughout this project soul music has been a wild card for me, ranging from ratings of 2 to 5. It’s not consistently a genre I’m comfortable in. Aretha, though, this I genuinely loved. I had a friend who does not like the sportsball once tell me that he liked watching Micheal Jordan because well even he could tell that guy was transcendently better than everyone else around him. Listening to this album was like watching Micheal Jordan play basketball, listening to her makes you aware you’re listening to the best to ever do it even if it isn’t your type of music. Aretha has such a masterful command of her voice that she assumes command of your emotions while you listen. A shame i only have one more of her albums to look forward to on this project. Maybe, I’ll appreciate Soul more properly by then.

Not used to Soul, but it definitely has... Soul. Very chill, maybe more background than active listening music, but this must be great live. Great vibes. Won't be my favorite album ever, but I could listen this again without any issues. 7/10?

First Listen; 4; This is just a solid album from start to finish. Incredible singing, varied sounding songs while still maintaining a strong R&B/soul sound throughout. Like with a lot of other music I've found that I like, the songs are very dynamic. It feels like there's a push and pull, an attack and release, throughout each song and the album. Can we all agree Groovin' is a terrible song? Not even Aretha could make it palatable. Would have been a perfect album without it. Still an outstanding listen.

I expected this to be good. Turns out it's great. It's far from the music I generally go for, but not only is Aretha's voice spectacular, but the accompanying music is engaging and fun. Genuinely a phenomenal album that I'd gladly own.

There’s a damn good reason she’s known as the Queen of Soul. Perfect blend of powerful gospel infused declarations of strength and moment of remarkable tenderness. An album that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant.

I expected to like this more but I still liked it.

This was an amazing album. Not only was it peak Aretha, but the band played the hell out of these songs and the production was stellar. That bass was just amazing throughout, and had me bopping the whole way to work. I can't even list the standouts as they all were. When I looked at the overall rating and saw 4.05 I was confused. I honestly can't understand anyone with a heartbeat not giving this a 5 star rating. Someone literally wrote "It's not pure banger after banger." What the hell do they think a banger is if not these amazing songs?? The good news is, those people aren't me and I LOVED this album.

Aretha Franklin was such a powerhouse vocalist, and this record shows that again and again and again. In 30 minutes, you get 10 top-notch songs that showcase her vocal and emotional range. My only criticism might be that it feels rather old fashioned for its time, given the incredible innovations happening in pop music in 1968. Actually, it's not so much a critique—not everything needs to be groundbreaking. It just is the thing that puts it in a different class from, say, "The White Album," "Bookends," or "Eli and the Thirteenth Confession".

Aretha really soars on this record, but overall I found it to be just very good and not amazing. No doubt that there are some excellent tracks on here. The two most notable songs, Chain of Fools and A Natural Woman, are both great, great songs and her voice sounds great on both of these. Sweet Sweet Baby was really cool as well, with everything about this track hitting. Come Back Baby reminded me of a Little Richard track, just had a bit of that very fast paced energy. Another excellent one. While her voice is great throughout, the last few songs on the record just didn't have much too them other than her. Keeps me from making this a 5 star. All the same, very, very good and a solid 4 star record.

Excellent album, I am a big fan of Aretha Franklin. I love the shorter runtime of this record, 10 songs with no filler. Each song is memorable and Aretha's performances on each is astounding. My only complaint would be that just when I feel a song reaches a satisfying climax and is riding that high it abruptly fades out and moves on. If the worst I can say about the album is that each song left me wanting more, then we are in good hands.

5/5 Aretha Franklin is one the greatest (if not the greatest) singers in all of western recorded music. Her voice has so much emotion, feel, and power in this album which is accompanied by some great danceable bass lines and a great horn section. Chain of Fools and You make me feel like a natural woman are amazing songs and I see why they are hits. Ain’t know way was another song I really enjoyed I have never heard before.

Personally, this one just didn't stick out, it had a few good songs here in their. I listen to lots of soul too, I just didn't enjoy this one as much, most of the songs just felt hollow. Overall, a 5/10 album, I did really enjoy Since You've Been Gone, but I did only like half of the album, the other half just lacked emotion in my opinion.

What an amazing voice. It’s hard to find any faults on this record. Great performances throughout, great instrumentation, and some genuine soul at the heart of the whole thing. It’s a very short album, but that probably helped it. Really incredible and absolutely deserves to be on this list.

If you don't feel something stirring deep inside of you while you listen to "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", you're stronger (weaker?) than I'll ever be. Goddamn, it's all so good. It goes up and down, it swings and shines and croons. Aretha is perfect, captivating, mind-altering, but her band doesn't lag behind at any point either. The bass really stuck with me this time, the tone is so precise and punchy. An album anyone can enjoy and everyone should hear.

Chain of Fools - Very nice syncopation - the main vocul, the chorus, the bass, the guitar and the drums all havetheir own rhythm that meshes nicely together. Isn't the "Chain-chain-chain" but in this reminiscent of A Change Would Do You Good? Money Won't Change You - Not much to say here; I like the thumping bass and horns, but the rest doesn't do much for me - I'd kind of like to see what Fatboy Slim would do with the the horn part. People Get Ready - A bit dreamlike. Niki Hoeky - I was familar with the Bobby Gentry version (my parents listened to a lot of country music when I was growing up) - i think I prefer this version, mainly because the intro to the Bobby Gentry version always tricked me into thinking I was listening to Ode to Billie Joe (an absolute classic song) (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman - everything about this is just perfect, you can pick out any element of the arrangement and listen to it and it's just great (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone - Another middling song saved by bass and horns. Good to Me as I am to You - There are plenty love songs, this is a hate song. Just leave him, you can find someone better. Come Back Baby - Look, I've told you, you're better off without him, enjoy your freedom, don't beg him to come back, I beg you. Groovin' - nice and laidback. Ain't No Way - I like this, it kind of reminds me of Paul Williams stuff (there's a very specific F9>Fm7 chord change he uses it a lot, which is present here).

Lady Soul is an absolut pleasure to listen to. The voice is incredible, the attitude is present and I ve been listening to it all day. I know nothing of her and the history of the album didn't really say much, but I'm glad to know her now. I think this is probably gonna be an album I listen to a lot !!!!

The amount of power in this album is incredible. My god, that voice! It’s a dance party with my broken heart. It’s having a drink with my tears. It’s laughing with someone who’s no longer here. This album is like having a great week in the 30 minutes it takes to listen to it. Amazing.

Embarrassingly have only really listened to Amazing Grace + Greatest Hits compilations from Aretha. But I do know the story of her going from Columbia to Atlantic and knew this was an Atlantic album. Crazy that there are so many enduring classic hits on one album.

All in all a good album, just not really my taste in genre.

Lady Soul is decent, but I've never been super into Aretha's music at all. I didn't hate this record, but it also wasn't a super fun entry for me. 6/10

Very strong. A few bangers short of a belter.

I mean the Goat of Goats. So good I looked up to see when her next show was. RIP to a legend. 8.6/10

No because I needed to hear all these songs... the first song immediately catch me and the last song totally wrecked me.
