Mekons
3/5
This was really neat. Completely unexpected and a very unique sound with the combination of fiddle and harmonica with the punk elements.

Wow, what a surprising and absolutely great album. Doesn't sound like something recorded in the 2010's for sure, lots of interesting little pieces in this.

Marty Robbins

The juxtaposition of dark lyrics against upbeat music on some of the songs such as El Paso is masterful.

Everything But The Girl

Basic light pop music, I get a retro country feel on some of the tracks. Enjoyed the singing. Feels like music you would hear in a hotel lobby or department store.

I understand the appeal to middle schoolers and high schoolers when it came out (I was one of them) but it does nothing for me in my 40s.

I know a lot of people my age really like Gorillaz, but I don’t get it. I wasn’t familiar with much other than the hits, I didn’t find a whole lot else when I listened. Some interesting grooves but I didn’t find the substance. Repetitive.

This is a great album that is a joy to put on. I wish I could give it a 4.5 as my only complaint is the sequencing, it starts a bit off slow for me. Once it gets going though around track for it is full of hits and should be part of the regular rotation.
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
Fleet Foxes
3/5
Vocals are nice, and the instrument arrangements are interesting and bring in a variety of instruments. I can understand why the album is rated high critically. That said the album didn't really pull me in and I found it a bit sleepy at times. Maybe I need to give it a few more listens to better appreciate it.
Julian Cope
2/5
Hit or miss songs, and not a big fan of the singing. There is some nice guitar work on a couple of the songs. Mood and tempo seem to change a bit around 2/3rds of the way through. Overall underwhelmed.
Nina Simone
2/5
Nice vocals and nice singing, I can appreciate the artist’s talent. Just a bit slow for me.
U2
3/5
Everything But The Girl
2/5
Basic light pop music, I get a retro country feel on some of the tracks. Enjoyed the singing. Feels like music you would hear in a hotel lobby or department store.
David Bowie
2/5
Not my favorite Bowie album, quite a few instrumental only songs. Typical unusual and experimental sounds from Bowie, but definitely less "punchy" than some of his other work and overall less exciting for me.
The Temptations
3/5
Real range on this album of funk and slower songs. Some of it a bit slow for me, but a good record nonetheless.
Talking Heads
3/5
Talking Heads always bring such unique and different sound, it’s a cool change of pace. Great mix of electronic elements and mixing effects with traditonal pop punk sound. The singing on this and similar groups tends to be my least favorite part. Not something I’m going to listen to regularly, but probably one to add to the collection because it is so different.
Blondie
4/5
Great album, fund to listen to.
Public Image Ltd.
1/5
Couldn't make it through the first song (which is very long, and I don't mind long songs when they are good). Has the vocal style I don't particularly care for, and the guitars I found to be grating. Just a bunch of noise, which I get is probably the point, but it's not for me.
The Louvin Brothers
3/5
Very classic old time country/folk, very much sounds true to the era it was recorded in. Not really a genre or a sound that speaks to me but I appreciate the sounds, and here influences in a lot of what was to come in future music.
Iggy Pop
3/5
Good album from Iggy, distinctive but not too far out. Very accessible. The Passenger is a great start to the album.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Started off a little slow but gets going on track 3 Living for the City. I felt Songs in the Key of Life started slow and picked up a couple songs in as well. Higher Ground is an all timer from Stevie’s catalog.
Fleetwood Mac
4/5
Great classic album with lots of well known hits. Always loved the vocal harmonizations, and one of the tightest rhythm sections in music. Would go 4.5 if I could, some of the songs just aren’t for me, but all easy to listen to.
Bee Gees
3/5
This is not the Bee Gees I was expecting which was a pleasant surprise. I have learned there is "sixties" Bee Gees and then there is disco Bee Gees, and probably some variations in between. Interesting mix of songs that span a range of genres from symphonic, to pop, to country, really all over the map.
Bob Dylan
5/5
Really fun, easy to listen to album. I think if you don't know much about Dylan except a handful of the classics (like me) this is probably a great place to start. Dylan's storytelling and songwriting abilities are on display here. Tangled up in Blue is a great start to the album, Idiot Wind and Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts are also favorite tracks. It's probably a 4.5 rating for me but since I have to pick and this ones got me in a good mood we can go 5.
Santana
5/5
Tremendous guitar album obviously, the Latin rock Santana brings is upbeat and brings in additional instrumentation you won't find on other albums, or presented in a different way than you might have heard before. I particularly like how the organ is used in songs like Hope You're Feeling Better and Oye Como Va. The limited vocals on the album make it great to have on behind the scenes as well.
The Cure
3/5
The Cure has always been OK to me, as someone who is not a big fan of the post punk sound this one is much easier to listen to than some of the other bands/albums of the day. Mellow, but a little too low key for my tastes.
4/5
Always enjoyed this one since I found it, a lot of variety from song to song but that's part of what makes it fun to listen to.
Fun Lovin' Criminals
3/5
Didn’t think I would care for it, but was pleasantly surprised. Interesting arrangements behind some of the songs, mix of instruments including guitar and keyboard.
The Go-Go's
3/5
Television
3/5
Catchy, really good guitar album.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
3/5
A lot of variety on the album, some good some not as much. “Funk rock” element to the songs works well in some places, gets a little tiresome in others. Lyrics very hit or miss as well. Overall more good than bad I think. Breaking the Girl is a great song.
PJ Harvey
3/5
Couldn’t really get into it, not sure why but I struggle with the genre, too much “noise” and not a huge fan of the vocal styling on some of the songs. Hit or miss.
Cypress Hill
2/5
Metallica
4/5
Love this album, just kind of exciting to hear existing music I already like presented in a new way. Orchestra sounds great, the songs are powerful, and one of the few live albums that deserves a place with the studio albums. Neat to listen to for something different.
Willie Nelson
3/5
Good instrumentation, fun concept album.
Bob Dylan
4/5
Great storytelling. Music is pretty good, a couple of hit or miss spots. Harmonica is good in some spots and a bit of a nuisance in others. Overall great to listen to.
George Michael
2/5
Just another 80s pop album. Lyrics are unimaginative.
Tom Waits
2/5
Sounds like I accidentally hit play on the Nighmare Before Christmas soundtrack. Having said that there are some redeeming songs. Not a fan of the whispy distant vocals on some of the tracks.
Al Green
3/5
Silky smooth singing, classic soul.
Marty Robbins
3/5
The juxtaposition of dark lyrics against upbeat music on some of the songs such as El Paso is masterful.
Foo Fighters
3/5
Album opens very strong, kind of loses steam as it goes on. Solid grunge/alt rock album.
The Teardrop Explodes
3/5
It's OK, I liked it a little more than I thought I would. I actually get some Talking Heads type of feel from some of the songs.
Lou Reed
4/5
Tough one to rate. Some things I really like - driving rhythms, mix of instruments including keyboards and orchestral parts. Songwriting is very good, some songs kind of tough to get through though. Lou's vocals are OK, not my favorite but they work well for the mood of the songs. The stuff that is really good, is really good.
Tom Tom Club
2/5
I appreciate the what the band is doing here, the innovation, and it’s likely an expertly mixed and produced album. The music itself just isn’t for me, although there are some bright spots and the Under the Boardwalk is a cool cover.
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
4/5
Great album, so easy to listen to.
4/5
I think this is a great album, Muse is one of my favorite 2000's era bands. Not every track is great, but the album is driving start to finish, interesting mixes, and I do like the vocals.
The Jam
3/5
It’s basic new wave punk. Middle of the road for me.
The Stranglers
3/5
Did not know what to expect here, I’ll say I was pleasantly surprised by the album in general. Music is good, representative of the time and style. Lyrics are comically bad, hard to listen to on a few tracks. This is one that makes me wish I could rank in 1/2 star increments to go down to 2.5
The Streets
1/5
Joan Armatrading
3/5
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
This is a good album, I just never got into Bruce. Maybe because it was overplayed so much when I was a kid, or it felt so much like music for another generation (even though I listen to a ton of stuff from the same era) I don't know how much I would go back to this album. Can't deny the songwriting and the great band though.
Minor Threat
1/5
I recognize this is emblematic of the genre, I just don’t care for the genre. Noise, shock, and bad lyrics. Cool when I was 15, not interesting 25 years later.
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
2/5
Not much blues on here. Some good guitar stuff here and there and some songs I did like, but a lot of noise rock. The screaming…
Van Halen
5/5
Incredibly fun, can’t deny Eddie’s guitar, just easy to listen to hard rock. It’s ok to sit back and enjoy stuff like this, it doesn’t all have to be art rock.
Beatles
4/5
As someone who did not grow up listening to the Beatles this is my first time listening to an album of theirs end to end. I am genuinely impressed with the variety of style and genre this album seems to cross. The psychedelic rock on tracks like She’s So Heavy is great and it’s easy to see how other bands evolved from this sound. That said I didn’t love everything, still feel Come Together is one of the most wildly overrated tracks of all time. Overall a great listen.
The Prodigy
1/5
This had some appeal to middle school me. That’s about as far as it goes.
Buzzcocks
3/5
Decent punk music
Gil Scott-Heron
3/5
There is some great stuff here and some things that just kind of meandered along. Nice album with something for a variety of tastes.
Finley Quaye
3/5
Interesting little reggae album.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
4/5
Fun album, easy to listen to
Miles Davis
3/5
I do enjoy jazz but some of this album is just very slow, almost too ethereal for me to stay with.
CHVRCHES
2/5
Just hard to get into the synth pop for me.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
One of their bluesier albums without a doubt. It's a good album, but I do find it a bit light.
Van Morrison
4/5
Great, easy to listen to album. Some of Van’s best.
Public Enemy
3/5
The Doors
3/5
The Doors have never been huge for me, but I do like the ways they featured keyboard/organ. This is not my favorite album from them, while there are some good tracks, Morrison Hotel is probably the one I would take if I had to pick one.
Ice T
2/5
Hawkwind
3/5
What a fabulously weird album. There is some interesting playing on here in between the nonsense storytelling. That was an experience, not sure I am going to listen again.
Deep Purple
5/5
This album rocks from start to finish. Awesome guitar riffs, and love how Deep Purple brings in the Hammond organ so prominently.
Count Basie & His Orchestra
4/5
Elite dinner party music. Put this on while you’re putting those drinks out and rolling out the pizza dough.
Baaba Maal
2/5
I probably don’t have the opportunity to give this album the attention it deserves during the day. Very low key, tough to get into.
Mudhoney
3/5
Just good old grunge
Lucinda Williams
2/5
Duke Ellington
4/5
Great album, when I think of listening to jazz this is what I want to hear.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
3/5
Surprised with how much I enjoyed this one.
The United States Of America
2/5
This album was quite a trip. Every time I started getting into it, it came in with overused sound effects or something that I just found off putting and it took me back out. The parts I did like had a Jefferson Airplane type of quality.
The Divine Comedy
3/5
I did like it more than I thought I would, but I don't see listening to it again. Upbeat and kept things moving, but the songwriting was crazy.
Tom Waits
3/5
lol I never know what to do with Tom Waits, always so weird but at times so interesting. 1/2 of me is into it 1/2 of me can’t do it.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
Really good blues/rock mix on this album. A couple songs I could do without keep it from a 5 but overall a great one.
Muddy Waters
5/5
Five star Chicago blues album. A must listen.
Cornershop
3/5
Various Artists
4/5
As far as holiday albums go, everything about it is great and a great mix of tradition and upbeat arrangements.
Jimmy Smith
3/5
Nice smooth jazz album.
A Tribe Called Quest
3/5
Otis Redding
3/5
Good album, a few classics/early versions of songs.
The White Stripes
4/5
Love this album, people still know how to make rock music even in the 2000s.
Sade
3/5
It grew on me as I listened to it more, but feels like the quintessential elevator music.
Deep Purple
5/5
Tremendous classic rock album, amazing riffs, keyboards, it all sounds great. An influence on many albums to come.
Led Zeppelin
5/5
So many great songs, this album brings a complexity and intrigue that had me putting it on repeat multiple times.
Justin Timberlake
2/5
Early 2000s club music. Not my jam.
Koffi Olomide
3/5
It's not bad, I don't mind stuff like this coming up on the list as it provides and interesting change of pace and stuff I wouldn't otherwise seek out. Alright in the background, feels a bit like tourist trap music.
Incubus
4/5
Pretty good album I remember well from my teenage years. Innovative sound, heavy in lots of places. Solid vocals. DJ scratching is additive in some areas, not all.
Elton John
5/5
Such a great album, first in a series of incredible stuff from one of the best. Elton’s ability to sing on top of the complex piano parts he carries always impresses me.
The Notorious B.I.G.
2/5
Repetitive, sort of drones on. Skits are cringe.
Hole
3/5
I did like it a little better than I thought, pretty classic grunge/90s alternative. But I did feel as the album played on each song had the same sound and the same feel.
Belle & Sebastian
3/5
Liked it a bit more than I thought I would. Some interesting instrumentation, good harmonies.
The Police
3/5
Good album, pretty middle of the road as far as my tastes go. The more you listen to the track “Mother” the more you learn to like it.
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
Such an underrated Jimi album. Not much in the way of singles that get airplay on the one for some reason, but that means you can jump in and almost hear it like new if you not familiar with it.
Bad Company
4/5
Such a great album and Paul Rodgers has a fantastic rock and roll voice. Always loved the song Bad Company. The album is a bit slow at times, but overall a great listen.
Rahul Dev Burman
2/5
Black Sabbath
5/5
Great album from one of the best. The couple of nice acoustical songs mixed in.
Oasis
4/5
Really good album. I had not dug deep into Oasis beyond the singles despite the peak of their popularity being during my teens, but worth getting into.
David Bowie
4/5
Haven’t spent much time listening to Bowie, this is the second album on the list for me. Liking most of what I hear. Surprising, eclectic, theatrical, and the pianos in this are unhinged.
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
For a genre that is not my favorite, this album wasn’t too bad. Probably not a re-listen for me though.
The Damned
4/5
If more punk music sounded like this, I would probably listen to more punk! A lot more variety from the musicians, not monotonous at all, more compelling vocals than a lot of punk artists, this is a cool album.
Frank Sinatra
3/5
I do enjoy Sinatra and this is overall a good album, but it's just a bit too slow, too weepy for me. Every song is pretty much about the same thing, which I understand is the point, but it just kind of carries on after you are a few songs in. Great Sinatra, probably not in my regular rotation.
Dr. Dre
2/5
Just not a genre I can get into, even when I was a kid I really wasn’t a fan. It has more variety and is more compelling than other rap albums of the time, but still have no desire to listen to it.
Derek & The Dominos
5/5
Amazing guitar album with Clapton and Allman. It does run a bit long, but the jam sessions and back and forth between the guitars are excellent.
The Zombies
4/5
Fun 60s psychedelic rock album. Great arrangements and emblematic of the genre.
Fiona Apple
3/5
Great singer no doubt. The album as a whole feels a bit of the same from track to track.
Mudhoney
4/5
Good old classic grunge.
Rage Against The Machine
5/5
Absolute classic from that era.
Jefferson Airplane
4/5
To me this is the definitive 60s psychedelic rock album. The sound is emblematic of the time. Grace Slick's vocals are iconic. There is a mix of some blues rock in there as well. A couple songs that miss for me, overall great album.
Fairport Convention
3/5
This album started off a bit slow for me, but as I got into it, I really enjoyed it. Some fantastic guitar playing and catchy melodies as you get to some of the later tracks.
Felt this one was pretty bland. The most corporate of the “corporate” rock.
Roni Size
1/5
Just not a big fan of electronic music.
The Velvet Underground
4/5
Wasn’t too familiar with Velvet Underground material before this list. They definetly continue to grow on me the more I listen.
Paul McCartney and Wings
3/5
This was ok. There were some interesting arrangements and some good moments. 1985 is a great song.
U2
3/5
Pretty good U2 album here, good variety of sounds.
Merle Haggard
3/5
Good classic country. From the time when musicians like this told stories. It's not my favorite genre, but certainly wouldn't turn it off if it came on.
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
Such a great album with the harmony between Simon and Garfunkel. Scarborough Fair is an incredible song with the countermelody and intricate details. Silent Night 7 o’clock news is also striking.
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
3/5
It’s very good classic jazz, but also a bit of lounge music, I think I just don’t like the genre as much as I thought I do.
Pretenders
4/5
Liked the full album very much for the variety of styles on it. Vocals fit the music and the music and the lyrics perfectly.
Digital Underground
2/5
Some of it is all right, for me not bad compared with other hip hop of the time. But my gosh, it's repetitive.
Leonard Cohen
3/5
Struggled a bit to get into this one, though I didn't dislike it either. The lyrics are the highlight, not to say I enjoyed every one. Some sounds I found oddly catchy, some I just couldn't wait to end. Real mixed bag, but it held my intrigue.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
4/5
Steely Dan
4/5
Ultimate Dad rock. Easy to listen to and good to put on any time you need something light.
Garbage
3/5
This album is good and I remember it being big at the time, but not convinced it belongs on this list?
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
2/5
Struggled to get into it. Very, very 80s synth pop type of sound.
Neil Young
4/5
The more Neil I get here the more his music grows on me. The vocals are still the weak spot for me but I felt this album was better, and great songwriting.
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
Just an incredible album start to finish.
4/5
Good indie rock album, liked it much better than Rid of Me.
Nico
2/5
Not my thing, didn't care for it. It's a lyrics album I suppose, and I don't always have the attention span to dive into them, but the music was quite meh.
Pere Ubu
1/5
At first I thought the music was ok, the singing was just bad. Then I got a couple tracks in and it got worse. And worse.
Pixies
3/5
Pixies are always hit or miss for me, this is not my favorite from them. There are some good tracks though and I do really like the way the vocals play off each other perfectly.
ZZ Top
4/5
Great album, several hits. Album keeps moving, can feel a little repetitive at times.
Arcade Fire
3/5
Pretty good concept album. Music is good for me, not spectacular but I don’t mind it.
Elbow
2/5
Lukewarm
FKA twigs
2/5
Elvis Presley
3/5
Not bad, pretty standard Elvis album.
The Doors
3/5
It’s not my favorite Doors album but there are some highlights and some classics, as well as some songs that just seem to drone on past their welcome.
The Clash
3/5
Great album, although I think it kind of pales in comparison to London Calling. Very much like a Ramones album. Good but repetitive at times.
Small Faces
4/5
I had no idea what to expect on this one, and I have to say I really liked it. Great listen, and the concept story was certainly something different.
My Bloody Valentine
3/5
I can appreciate the weirdness here. Some ups and downs and a variety of music on this.
DJ Shadow
2/5
As someone who is not super into this genre, I thought it was funky and had a much more hip-hop feel than an electronica feel. Like it better than most in this area.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
Great album, not as many singles as Exodus but such great stuff it might be even better.
Beastie Boys
5/5
Fast paced, high energy, wide variety. It's a record unlike any other.
Brian Eno
3/5
Very unique and strange. A lot of instrumental. Not sure is listen again but interesting hearing the different parts come together.
Nirvana
4/5
Really great live album, I can remember as a kid how great this was. Set the standard for “unplugged”.
The Pogues
4/5
Awesome album, intense energy, unique sound. You can hear the bands they influenced in their music.
Prince
3/5
Just not my favorite from Prince. It’s ok.
Adele
4/5
Tremendously talented singer. Great voice.
Bauhaus
2/5
Just not really my jam. Some bizarre stuff on here.
Skepta
2/5
The Magnetic Fields
3/5
I liked it a bit more than I thought I would. It’s certainly a lyrics album, I wish I had the ability to listen in as closely as I should. Way too long though, very tedious to get through.
Led Zeppelin
5/5
Iconic album that is near perfect end to end. When the Levee Breaks is possibly my favorite LZ song ever, and for someone looking to get in to Zeppelin this is an easy one to step into.
Coldplay
3/5
Liked it a bit better than I thought. Still sort of plain and unexciting to me.
The Undertones
3/5
Thought this was a pretty cool punk album. Fast paced, fun to listen to.
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
This is a good album. But I’ve gotten a lot of post punk albums and they all kind of run together.
fIREHOSE
4/5
Was not familiar with this band but was surprised at how much I liked it. Great early alt rock. Good guitar work.
Charles Mingus
3/5
Not sure what to make of this one. Quite a cacophony at some parts. As for jazz it is pretty interesting and definetly something I want to spend more time digging in and listening. This one needs some time to appreciate.
The Stone Roses
4/5
Really good album with some great songs. Was not familiar with it but pleasantly surprised.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
2/5
This album feels a lot more dance and electronica driven than the other album on the list. The couple top singles are frequently featured in dance mixes, this one isn’t for me.
Sarah Vaughan
3/5
Nice recording, great voice. Easy listening. Not something I am super into, but good to have on for some ambiance.
Janelle Monáe
3/5
Joni Mitchell
3/5
Good singer songwriter. Nice to have on, nothing over the top.
Radiohead
3/5
It’s just too ethereal and too much electronica for me. Some good songs, but tough to sit through at times.
Shack
3/5
Fun little album.
Jeru The Damaja
2/5
Just not my taste, sounds like a lot of the other 90s hip hop albums out there.
Guns N' Roses
5/5
It’s overplayed, has awful lyrics, and is completely gratuitous, still there goes one of the great metal debut albums of all time.
Sigur Rós
2/5
It was pretty slow to get going. It did grow on me a bit as I listened but generally kind of boring for me. Too sophisticated for my tastes I guess.
Fugazi
3/5
Good album with a sound that feels like a mix of rock, punk, grunge.
Ministry
3/5
Man this is heavy. I don’t know how often I could play it through, but good example of foundational industrial metal.
Kraftwerk
3/5
I’m normally not a big electronic music fan. I happened to listen to this one with headphones and it was a completely different experience. The engineering on this is incredible. Still not something I’ll listen to regularly, but I can appreciate the art.
Elvis Presley
3/5
Good classic Elvis, a more soulful toned down later Elvis album.
Pink Floyd
5/5
Tremendously good. Great guitar work, light and airy, lots of room in the music for each instrument.
Keith Jarrett
5/5
Really fantastic piano album, and the story behind it, and the fact that so much is improved, makes it incredible.
4/5
Great album.
Big Star
3/5
Big Star is good but I just don’t get the hype. This was not as good as Number #1 and it was a bit depressing at points.
Paul Simon
4/5
Great songs, musically great, songwriting is great. The more I listened the more I enjoyed it.
Fatboy Slim
2/5
I’m sure what is being produced is very innovative, seems to be an interesting story behind it. Not really what I’m interested in, samples of samples of samples.
Massive Attack
2/5
Not bad to have on, but not terribly inspired by it either. Also, name of the band does not line up with the sound of the music. 2 or 3? Did not care for the Light My Fire cover.
Rocket From The Crypt
3/5
Not sure how I hadn’t heard of these guys, but good fun album. Not much variety song to song though.
Kacey Musgraves
2/5
Just kind of bland pop country.
Hugh Masekela
3/5
Good smooth jazz album
The Who
4/5
Great debut, mix of genres here, I can imaging at the time of its release it was a big deal. It’s no Who’s Next but it’s a great start.
Grizzly Bear
3/5
Some good highlights but also some parts that just wander along.
Jamiroquai
4/5
This was super cool. I had heard of these guys but was not familiar with their work, this was fun to listen to.
Bob Dylan
4/5
Relatively unfamiliar with Dylan's stuff (besides the most popular songs) before this project, and the more I get it, the more I enjoy it. I know this is different than the earlier works, but the bluesy feel is right up my alley.
The Black Keys
5/5
Really great album with modern blusey sound. One of my favorites from this era, although El Camino is probably my favorite Black Keys album. If anything, it’s a little long and you could probably cut a song or two.
Led Zeppelin
5/5
Great album that I think gets lost in the shuffle of other LZ albums at times. The band continues to expand their sound, and lots of “deep tracks” with only one single off this one.
The Slits
2/5
It has some interesting sound in places and some unconventional arrangements but overall just a bit too unrefined and lacking interest for me.
Slipknot
2/5
Slipknot is ok but really just too much noise for me at this point. Singer has a good voice and some of the slower songs actually play well, but most of the album I could do without.
Kraftwerk
4/5
Not a big electronica fan but I really like Kraftwerk and they way they put together each song and build the soundstage. The music is in 3D.
Massive Attack
3/5
Eminem
2/5
I understand the appeal to middle schoolers and high schoolers when it came out (I was one of them) but it does nothing for me in my 40s.
Dolly Parton
3/5
Great classic country album
Bert Jansch
4/5
Wow really great guitar work on this, some of these songs like “Angie” I could just listen to on repeat. Pleasant surprise from an artist I was unfamiliar with.
The Beach Boys
3/5
Not my favorite from them but very well arranged and put together musically, a little repetitive in the songs and style.
Jack White
5/5
Great album
Funkadelic
5/5
So weird and so awesome, this stuff is fun to listen to and the carves its own path. Great mix of instrumentation and rhythm, makes you want to flip it back over and play again.
Youssou N'Dour
3/5
Had no idea what to expect here but pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it.
Holger Czukay
3/5
Still not completely sure how I feel on this one, I may never be sure. Some very interesting stuff and some interesting mix I can get lost in, and then some oddball stuff that just takes me out of it.
Peter Frampton
4/5
Great album
Rush
5/5
Absolutely love this one, amazing musicianship, a little less dense than some of the earlier albums (which are also great).
R.E.M.
4/5
Great album
The Jesus And Mary Chain
4/5
Joni Mitchell
3/5
My third Joni Mitchell album I think. It is good and I appreciate the writing. Just not really my cup of tea.
The Kinks
3/5
Mixed feelings on it. It’s good but definetly dated to its era. Will have to give it a few more listens.
The Temptations
4/5
Started off great with the first three songs being very different from the typical. Rest of the album was more like the usual Temptations fare but also really good.
Thelonious Monk
3/5
It’s ok. Not really my preference of Jazz.
Neu!
2/5
Didn’t love it, kind of low key.
John Lee Hooker
4/5
Good classic blues. Doesn’t light you on fire, but smooth and easy to listen to.
Beatles
3/5
The earlier pop Beatles songs I don’t care for as much as the more complex and varied albums of the later 60s. It’s not bad, plenty of good musical elements. A little repetitive.
Parliament
5/5
Awesome funk album, impossible not to enjoy.
Lou Reed
4/5
I have mixed feelings on Reed’s music but this is one of the best, with a very talented supporting cast.
Stevie Wonder
5/5
Great album by one of the greatest.
Gang Of Four
3/5
Good punk album, as far as punk albums go.
Pulp
3/5
Very interesting album, there were some tracks I enjoyed, but a few I also felt were a little tough to listen to. Not really my style but I found myself going back for a couple re-listens.
The Allman Brothers Band
5/5
Exceptional live jam album. Super fun to listen to, going to these concerts would have been great. If we want to hear the songs the way they were written, we can go to the studio album, but this is a great chance to hear the artists explore.
Ali Farka Touré
3/5
Not too bad for a world album, I enjoyed some of the instrumentation.
Sam Cooke
5/5
Two awesome live albums in one week. This is what a live album should be. Good enough production and sound, some crowd elements but not too much, the artist having fund and putting on a show. Would have been a great show to be at.
Burning Spear
3/5
Solid reggae album
Led Zeppelin
5/5
Just an incredible album to put on any time.
The Smiths
3/5
Solid album, nothing that dazzled me, but enjoyed it.
The Band
5/5
Black Sabbath
5/5
Great album, although there are others from Black Sabbath that I prefer. Still, it's great end to end; Electric Funeral is probably my favorite track.
Beck
4/5
Bob Dylan
5/5
Each Dylan album tells me I enjoy his work much more than I thought I did. This is a fun one and very upbeat.
Portishead
3/5
Liked it more than I thought it would as I have it a second and third listen. Took a while to grow on my but music has a vibe to it.
Michael Kiwanuka
3/5
Another one I liked quite a bit more than I thought I would.
Kate Bush
3/5
Weird for sure, I liked some of it, had a hard time staying with it though.
Sparks
4/5
Fabulously weird album. Loved the chaos and the mix of instruments and sounds.
Metallica
5/5
Just an awesome thrash album, with enough variety to keep things interesting. Could listen to it over and over.
Coldplay
3/5
This is not bad for what it is. It’s a soft pop album with good vocals.
Megadeth
5/5
Top tier thrash album, it’s hair on fire metal from start to finish.
Mekons
3/5
This was really neat. Completely unexpected and a very unique sound with the combination of fiddle and harmonica with the punk elements.
Sonic Youth
4/5
Good 90s rock album. Having the two lead vocalists helps mix things up, and a variety of sound and styles.
Franz Ferdinand
5/5
One of my favorite albums from this era. This was one of the first indie rock albums I got into and opened up a new genre for me. Catchy as hell.
ABBA
4/5
Great pop album, this one has lots of hits. Not necessarily in my wheelhouse but an extremely well done album.
David Crosby
3/5
Good album with good vocals and interesting guitar. I felt it drags a bit at times.
Beth Orton
3/5
This was not my jam but it was good. I felt like it had a Joni Mitchell feel. I probably need to spend more time listening to the lyrics and songwriting.
Stereo MC's
2/5
It’s not really my thing but I’ve come around on this kind of music a bit. Catchy and fun, but very repetitive.
Supertramp
3/5
The Cure
4/5
I really liked this one quite a bit more than the previous Cure album I received (Seventeen Seconds). Just felt a little more complex, a little more intricate. Probably more accessible, which for me in this case is a good thing.
Can
1/5
Ugh, I realty wanted to like this and there were some parts in the beginning that I was really grooving with. Then it descended into just unlistenable psychedelic experimentation noises and that was it.
Slade
3/5
Fun little party album. Nothing crazy, just rock and roll.
Screaming Trees
3/5
Good alt rock/grunge album, but nothing crazy here. Enjoyed it but nothing really stood out for me.
The Killers
5/5
Forgot what a great album this was start to finish. Could be the college nostalgia but it really is great to listen to and is basically one hit after another.
Nirvana
5/5
Tremendous, genre-defining album, almost start to finish. If they had just left Endless, Nameless off the album it would be near perfect for what it is.
Isaac Hayes
3/5
Fun album, great songs, screams "cool" from the start. That said I don't know how often I'm going back to replay, but wouldn't mind hearing it every now and again.
Janis Joplin
5/5
Great album, the music is great and funky and Janis’s voice is one of a kind.
The Afghan Whigs
3/5
The music is good, pretty typical 90s rock. Lyrically not into it.
The Smiths
3/5
Good album, Smiths are not totally my thing, but enjoyed it.
David Bowie
4/5
There is some very interesting stuff in here, and I continue to enjoy Bowie's work each time it comes up. It might not be on the A list of his albums, but some very interesting rhythms and great instrumentation.
Faith No More
4/5
Great album with its own unique sound.
Underworld
1/5
Great album with its own unique sound.
White Denim
5/5
Wow, what a surprising and absolutely great album. Doesn't sound like something recorded in the 2010's for sure, lots of interesting little pieces in this.
Miles Davis
5/5
The album title says it all.
Common
3/5
Good album. Not really in the wheelhouse of what I typically listen to, but I appreciate the work.
The Beau Brummels
4/5
Fun, very 60s album. The Wolf of Velvet Fortune is a very cool song.
Alice Cooper
5/5
Of course it’s going to be a fun, silly album with Alice Cooper, but I did not expect it to be as musically interesting as it was. Definitely going to get some re-play.
John Lennon
4/5
I liked this quite a bit more than I thought I would. While there are some strange parts and some sections that just take me out of the album, there is good writing and some interesting elements that I did enjoy.
The Smiths
4/5
I think this is the last of the Smiths albums on the list for me. Relatively unfamiliar with them before the list, I have mixed feelings in general, but this is a very good album and certainly the one of the bunch that captured my attention the most.
Cocteau Twins
3/5
Sonic Youth
3/5
David Bowie
3/5
I've come to like a lot of the Bowie albums on the list, but this certainly is behind all the others I've listened to so far. It starts off good, but the second half is just a little too ethereal, too spacious for me, and it was quite a lot to sit through, wondering how long it was going to go on.
Violent Femmes
4/5
Great album, so many popular songs, and a sound unique to the band. Open with a lot of space for each musician to shine. It can become a little grating over time, but it's a good one to put on every now and again for something different.
Lenny Kravitz
3/5
I thought this album was pretty good. It seems to get a lot of hate in the reviews but I don't know if the comparisons to other artists are fair. Yes the songwriting isn't 5 star, but it's kind of funky and easy to listen to.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Another great Stevie album. Although not as high on the list for me as some of the other work, great songwriting and great music.
The KLF
2/5
Just not my thing.
Sister Sledge
3/5
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
A great album. It's a little slow at times and the lyrics can be gut wrenching (though very good). Something different, wouldn't listen to it all the time, but it's very good.
The Coral
3/5
Paul Simon
3/5
Goldfrapp
2/5
Arcade Fire
3/5
They really put together some great sound. Not always what I’m looking for, but can’t deny it’s all well put together.
Sly & The Family Stone
4/5
What a great funk album, love it start to finish.
The Who
3/5
It's a cool album with a great concept, it's just too long. There are some great songs on here. From the standpoint of a whole album, it's a little challenging for me.
AC/DC
5/5
People like to drag this album because it’s overplayed, but it’s one solid gold hit after another. Sometimes this is just what you want to listen to.
Miles Davis
4/5
Quite the album, a lot going on. Don't try to do anything else while listening. It's an objectively good album that commands your attention, not a casual listen.
Pink Floyd
5/5
Not much to say about this one that hasn't already been said. The musicianship is great, and the concept, the continuous work of music, and the production take the experience over the top.
Nick Drake
3/5
I think this is a really nice album, I enjoyed it, but admittedly I need to spend a little more time with the lyrics. It’s probably better than a 3 but it needs a few more listens.
Sufjan Stevens
3/5
New to me, and musically a little more interesting than I expected. Some nice arrangements. Long, and at least one song on here I never need to hear again.
The Sonics
3/5
It’s fun but not much new here, lots of well covered covers, and the rough production is tough on the high end.
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
This is a great album. Every time I think ‘oh this is not for me’ another great song brings me back in. A couple songs I could skip but The Boxer is an all time great.
Blur
4/5
Cool album with a lot of variety of sound and styles.
Prince
4/5
Great songs here, Prince still tends to be a bit of a mixed bag for me personally, but can’t deny it’s quality and the great songs hit.
Frankie Goes To Hollywood
3/5
I liked this one quite a bit more than I thought I would. Probably not a frequent listen, but interesting and well put together.
Sinead O'Connor
3/5
The Beta Band
3/5
Thought this was pretty good, completely new to me. Adaptation of Daydream in the first song was kind of cool.
Michael Jackson
5/5
Great great album, not much else to be said.
Elvis Presley
4/5
Great opportunity for casual Elvis fans to hear some hits.
Gram Parsons
4/5
Really great album, and Harris’s duet take it to the next level.
Astrud Gilberto
2/5
Pink Floyd
5/5
Great album, not a casual listen. The cohesiveness and the concept are great, a classic.
The Cure
3/5
Stan Getz
3/5
It’s got a vibe
Eric Clapton
4/5
Great chill album, easy to listen to, nothing earth shattering but high quality work.
King Crimson
5/5
Awesome album, 21st Century is a legendary song, I could listen to it over and over again, despite the lyrics being so minimal. I can understand why someone might not like it, and Moonchild kind of drags on, but otherwise it's so great. The drumming is very crisp on this as well.
Van Morrison
3/5
Alice In Chains
5/5
The greatest of the grunge albums if you ask me, outside of maybe Superunkown. Haunting, driving. Vocals are great, the albums is a wall of sound.
Billy Joel
5/5
If you’re going to grab a Billy Joel album this is the one. So many good songs and moments. The intro of the piano on Always a Woman gives me goosebumps every time.
Talk Talk
2/5
It’s got a vibe to it, some good moments, works when you’re looking for something lighter.
Aerosmith
4/5
Yes Aerosmith is silly 70s-80s hair band rock. But it’s fun and Steven Tyler’s voice is a great rock voice, I’ll listen to this anytime.
Billy Bragg
3/5
Steely Dan
4/5
Silly yacht rock, engineered and mixed to an extreme standard. Musically deeper than it lets on. Great afternoon music.
Ray Charles
4/5
Great stuff, timeless listening.
Ryan Adams
3/5
Wilco
3/5
Everything But The Girl
2/5
David Bowie
3/5
Beatles
4/5
My first real exposure to this album, and it's a great album, and I flip-flopped between 4 and 5 stars. A lot of great stuff, a few items I didn't care for. I understand we're taking music to strange new places with this one, just a few points where it took me out of the album.
Barry Adamson
3/5
It’s interesting, well produced.
David Bowie
4/5
Great, funky, fun to listen to.
Grateful Dead
4/5
Was not super familiar with work from Grateful Dead heading into this. Did know this album a bit, though, smooth and easy to listen to. Nothing earth-shattering or that makes you jump out of your chair, but also comes together very effortlessly, and something you can run back multiple times.
Rod Stewart
4/5
Rod Stewart rocks.
