Trio by Dolly Parton

It must be very tough to deal with Southern US men! There is little doubt about the legendary status of Parton, and it's nice to learn about Ronstadt and Harris too. Twelve years after Trio, they released Trio II, would be interested to check that one out as well. Trio is a pleasant summertime listen, as the album fits perfectly the mood of a slow June workday – I'm just not enthusiastic about country music. So, please note that two stars isn't a bad rating by any means, I just don't see myself purposefully listening to this album again – not easy to reflect that on a five-star scale.

Parachutes by Coldplay

I thought Coldplay gets way more stick than what they actually deserve, so I tried to approach this with an open mind. Was not familiar with their debut as X&Y (2005) was their first record I gotten into - and particularly liked as a teen. In theory, Parachutes (2000) should be working really well: as Britpop was clearly losing momentum by the end of the 20th century, Coldplay was trying to find a new way of building upon this legacy - the massive commercial success of this album clearly indicates they succeeded in doing so. But for God’s sake, this is such a boring album, with most of the songs sounding frustratingly stale - watered down guitars and generic piano bits everywhere. In a way, I think Parachutes may be responsible for pioneering this new era of white-middle-class-men making risk-averse music under the pretence of being a rock band: while they fill arenas and sell out stadiums, they just don’t have much to say about the world. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think popular music should always be clever or meaningful in particular, but if the music itself lacks some excitement in the first place, at least try making up for it by saying something relatable about the era you’re living in. Or women. Maybe, this is just how the early 2000s was. To be fair, I also remember myself being quite bored at the time.

I vaguely remember my mom immediately changing stations every time Stan came on the radio. But here I am, twenty-something years later, being an absolute stan of the song.

Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin

OMG I just LOVE Greta Van Fleet! I saw them live once, Josh is SO CUTE, he was handing out white roses in the crowd <3 <3 What a long ass album though!

Truth by Jeff Beck
Jun 14 2024

Had no idea Jeff Beck has built such a supergroup, but the other way around. Songs that stood out for me: Shapes of Things (think I've heard it as a Yardbirds song already) & Morning Dew

Entertainment by Gang Of Four
Jun 19 2024

A defining record of my high school years. Raw British post-punk with a leftist critique of society. Songs that I love: Ether Natural’s Not in It Damaged Goods Glass

Exit Planet Dust by The Chemical Brothers
Jul 18 2024

I wasn’t sure until the middle if it’s an album or just one 50-minute track? To be fair, it gets a bit better after Chemical Beats, the last track, Alive Alone is quite okay actually. I can imagine this debut sounding like something really cool in 1995, but no, this doesn’t really match my taste at all.

Back To Black by Amy Winehouse
Jul 23 2024

Love this album. Was so devastated when she passed away, I already had the tickets to see her at a festival

Marquee Moon by Television
Jul 30 2024

Main takeaway for me: I thought they were British

Seventh Tree by Goldfrapp
Aug 01 2024

Missed out on Goldfrapp entirely when every second NME article was about them. But I quite like this album! A song which stands out for me: Little Bird

Channel Orange by Frank Ocean
Aug 06 2024

Drake for pseudo-intellectuals? I quite liked this one, especially Super Rich Kids (and the PSX theme at the intro)

Here's Little Richard by Little Richard
Aug 07 2024

What a debut! He also kinda debuted popular music, too. I have a core memory of going absolute nuts as a 5-year-old when hearing Tutti Frutti for the first time at my aunt's. It might have been the song which started it all for me. The songs on the album sound a bit too similar and repetitive, though - it feels like Little Richard absolutely milked the format once he realized that it works so well.

69 Love Songs by The Magnetic Fields
Aug 09 2024

I really enjoyed the quirkiness of 69 Love Songs in the beginning, quite liked the first album, especially Come Back From San Francisco. Some of the songs reminded me of The Shins. Going deeper with the album(s), I wasn't sure what to make of this – it doesn't really feel like a coherent concept despite the title, and there is great variety when it comes to the quality of the songs, too: I think the highlights are nice, but its lowlights are downright annoying. I don't think there's enough quality to justify the 2 hour 52 minute length of the album(s) as there's plenty of fillers between the better songs and it's tend to lose it's edge towards the third album. On another note, I think the algorithm should always assign these longer albums to a Friday – it took me 4 days to finish these 3 albums and it would be easier to get these done on a weekend.

Thriller by Michael Jackson
Aug 19 2024
The Doors by The Doors
Aug 22 2024

I think much of The Doors’ appeal has to do with Morrison’s charisma and early death. Obvious highlights are the famous ones

Music in Exile by Songhoy Blues
Aug 23 2024

Refreshing to see some African music in a predominantly UK / US centric canon. Reminds me of Gnawa music a lot. Awesome album, gets a bit repetetive though.

Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath
Aug 27 2024

I had no idea that between this and the release of Paranoid there has only been like 7 months. That’s insanely prolific even by today’s standards. Solid album. Not sure how, but I feel like I never heard NIB before

Celebrity Skin by Hole
Aug 29 2024

The first two songs are awesome. The rest is not so remarkable – on a positive note, it was nice to find out that Courtney Love had an actual musical career

Weirdly, they remind me of The Small Faces. Getting more and more convinced about 1967 being an outstanding year for music.
