David Bowie
2/5
2 - I don’t feel this as much as some of his more famous works, less groovy and feels more dated
Radiohead
4/5
4 - I originally a 3, but I thought it deserved another listen and changed my mind. Certain tracks blended together, but it was a case of “the whole is greater than the sum of parts”
The Cure
3/5
3 - wish I liked this more than I did, but it lacks any sort of umph and all just fades away into good background music
The Smiths
3/5
3 - Some tracks hit: Cemetry Gates, I know It's Over, second half of There Is a Light That Never Goes Out. Despite this, many are very forgettable or just mid. The harsh transitions between tracks can be jarring.
I was mostly impressed that the album kept me mostly engaged throughout the run. It definitely benefits from being a short listen.
Arcade Fire
2/5
3 - Some tracks hit: Cemetry Gates, I know It's Over, second half of There Is a Light That Never Goes Out. Despite this, many are very forgettable or just mid. The harsh transitions between tracks can be jarring.
I was mostly impressed that the album kept me mostly engaged throughout the run. It definitely benefits from being a short listen.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
4 - Just a jolly listen, some great tracks some more mid, but nothing bad.
I guess Pastime Paradise is the original gangster paradise, does that mean "Amish Paradise" is a parody parody?
I liked disc 1 a lot more. The uncut, long songs on disc 2 could be a bit dragged out
Creedence Clearwater Revival
4/5
4 - The sound of this album is somehow different and exactly the same to some of their best known hits. Not the biggest fan of this kind of rock n roll, but they do it well
Paul Weller
5/5
5 - maybe it’s the moment, but this calm, melodic, and soothing just hit
definitely not perfect, and can blend together, but as a whole it’s amazing
Probably a good point to write my criteria for a 5: good enough to save to my Spotify (a historically impossibly high bar) and listen to many times in the future
Deserves a second listen
3/5
3
Elvis Presley
3/5
3 - I liked some of this, but it was kinda bland, especially because I listened to it at a moody time and it still didn’t carry
Syd Barrett
1/5
1 - there’s a reason punk Floyd got good after this dude left
Really not my type of music and this guy has no substance
The ad lib parts are absolutely horrrible too
Marvin Gaye
3/5
3 - Some stuff would set the mood, but overall just blended together for me and nothing jumped out
Dusty Springfield
4/5
4 - I liked this more than I expected for how old it is. Some tracks like you don’t own me aged incredibly well into blending with new-er sounds, but others really really didn’t, overall a good listen
Pink Floyd
5/5
5 - this isn’t my favorite of their stuff, but it’s an easy 5. I’d never listened to this whole thing, but surprised me how much more abstract it was than I thought
King Crimson
4/5
4- Reminded me of Pink Floyd in a more rock-y way, but the intro and exits were hard to get through
The Rolling Stones
3/5
3 - I listened to the American version out of protest to the damn British bias of this list, as always with 60s stuff, there’s one or two songs that stood the test of time, but most deserve to be forgotten.
Johnny Cash
5/5
5 - the man in black! The type of old music that I like, and an amazing performance
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
5/5
5 - this album has some amazing tracks that I never expected to find, exactly why I started this journey and it’s worth a second listen
I recommend good headphones
Tito Puente
1/5
1 - I probably would’ve left it at the first song if I wasn’t doing this album, some tracks were okay but not enough for me to even remember which ones
The The
3/5
3 - I think this band has a lot of really neat sounds (especially evident when I listened to some of their most popular songs, and in Heartland), but often odd vocals or shifts mid song ruin it for me
Joy Division
4/5
4 - cool sound but not my thing
Cool album art - actually how nasa discovered neutron stars I think
Deerhunter
4/5
4 - this is kinda a critic’s album, not for me but I thought it was pretty good and unique. Makes me think what other “modern” albums from around this time got cut so this one could be put in
The Doors
3/5
3 - I like the doors for their weird but timeless like people are strange and riders of the storm (bandwagon I know)
This was not that, but it did start strong. However, it quickly fell off for me and the ending was actually tough to get through
Metallica
4/5
4 - I struggled trying to justify a 5, but it’s honestly paced horribly and there’s at least 3 skips in a row in the second half
Charles Mingus
1/5
1 - I’m sure this was revolutionary for its time, and it seems like there’s a lot of talent behind it, but my god why 39 minutes of pure jazz no vocals or anything. Couldn’t be further from what I like
Country Joe & The Fish
3/5
3 - I was really vibing with it until Section 43. I liked some of the experimental stuff after that, but it was polarizing and inconsistent
Ride
4/5
4 - Reminded me a of a more cohesive version of ‘hail to the theif’ some tracks really give me Radiohead vibes, but they’re much easier and soothing to listen to
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
4 - wish movie soundtracks were like this nowadays, a couple good tracks
Sisters Of Mercy
3/5
3 - I listened, I have almost no thoughts
The Only Ones
2/5
2 -just felt bland
N.W.A.
5/5
5 - happy that I finally got to listen to this. There’s obviously the well known tracks, but it was a no skip album.
The Boo Radleys
3/5
3 - wild ride
Tori Amos
4/5
4 - I wish I could have given this a second listen. not a 5 but I think there's some genius behind this. I loved Silent All These Years, and tracks like Girl and Me and a Gun show there's a complex story behind the somber songs.
Brian Eno
3/5
3 - I did not find this enjoyable to listen to. But, it was surprisingly interesting, each track completely different—from crazy guitar solos to an almost cathartic piano section, definitely shows the highs and lows of experimental music
The Killers
4/5
4 - White boy music
Elton John
4/5
4 - some Elton John will always hit, title track is some of his best stuff. I don’t like the more fast paced second half as much (other artists do it better), but it’s still a good time
3/5
3 - I thought this was very interesting, and I feel like I know a lot of Yes' bigger songs. This was very experimental and didn't hit the same for me
Soundgarden
4/5
4 - Pretty good for hard rock, I might come back if I’m ever VERY angry
Common
5/5
5 - art. Especially where he treads the line of spoken word and rap. Lots of bangers. It was kinda funny to see how much influence early Kanye had on this record though
Bob Dylan
4/5
4 - liked this a lot more than the other Dylan track. He’s obviously pandering to a wider audience. I just think his voice doesn’t flow enough for the folk songs he sings, hot take
Cocteau Twins
4/5
4 - an easy 5 if you’re into elevator/background music. More seriously, it just blended together
Radiohead
4/5
4 - this was objectively better than hail to the thief, and may be a 5, but it needs a second listen first
AC/DC
4/5
4 - just not as iconic as some of their other stuff
Carole King
3/5
3 - Not my thing but “Its too Late” was a good song
Television
2/5
2 - weird
3/5
3 - I really like their one song, uprising, but this isn’t that at all. The idea of space exotic music is cool, but not for me
Santana
3/5
3 - not my thing, but the instrumentals were really interesting and far ahead of their time
The Magnetic Fields
5/5
5 - I can happily say that I’ve had this and it’s over. 3 hours is a lot. I think some at the end are better but I honestly had trouble sitting through. I’ll be saving this—it’s a 5 easily—because I want to keep coming back to explore
David Bowie
2/5
2 - really didn’t get this, thin white duke tho
Django Django
4/5
4 - a trip and good ambient music
Electric Light Orchestra
4/5
4 - this album to me is a 1:20 lead up and cool down to Mr Blue Sky, and it might never be anything else
The War On Drugs
5/5
5 - absolutely incredible, every track, I’ll find this sometime later in life when I really need it and it’ll get me down and up again. Last song gives me duck worth vibes and I’m sure there’s more to it
Mudhoney
4/5
Good rock music, just kinda drowns itself out and 2 hours is crazy
CHIC
4/5
4 - better than this genre usually is
Cornershop
1/5
1 - this was absolutely horrible. British bias otherwise it wouldn't ever be in here (I also just hate when experimentation goes wrong) half of this would be more "noise" than music imo
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
3 - two great songs but they honestly need the liveliness on bad moon rising for a whole album— or at least for more of it
Radiohead
5/5
5 - best one I’ve heard from them yet. Actually like a bunch of the songs and it’s so much better as a whole
Air
5/5
5 - such a chill and cerebral ride through space, just as the title promises
Beastie Boys
4/5
4 - knew and liked the famous songs. The unfinished production wasn’t my thing but it was obviously super creative and the start of a genre
Beatles
3/5
3 - hot take (maybe) one of my least favorite beetles projects. Lots of the songs seems filler or blend together, in my life stands out
Beck
4/5
4 - a lot of this was really unique and fun, one of the songs (without knowing the artist) I figured out it was the same guys that did loser
Antony and the Johnsons
2/5
2 - really not my thing did not like, but great composition and production so not a 1
ABBA
4/5
4 - as if Mama Mia was an album… wait
Pearl Jam
4/5
4 - my mother would be annoyed that I didnt give this a 5 but the second half is boring
Fats Domino
3/5
3 - very fun, not my thing
Funkadelic
3/5
3 - I really liked the opening mood of the first song but nothing else grabbed me
Michael Jackson
4/5
4 - some bangers but it’s missing a lot in the filler tracks
Moby Grape
3/5
3 - this was so short that I didn't have anything to dislike
The Vines
3/5
3 - this was so short that I didn't have anything to dislike
Blur
4/5
I honestly didn't like most of it, but then it would somewhat hit and I would get really into it. I just think Blur will always be super varied for me--overall great especially by the end
Machito
3/5
3 - kinda an ambient jazzy experience, it wasn’t bad
Meat Puppets
4/5
4 - There was a lot of unique stuff on this album, most were good, some were great, some sucked. Cool to learn a few classics were from this too
Alice In Chains
3/5
3 - some good ones but I didn’t like most tbh
Astor Piazzolla
3/5
2 - they're obviously talented and this is a work of art, but I just don't like most of it
The Temptations
3/5
3 - they’re decent
James Taylor
4/5
4 - some very sweet melodic songs and not much filler
Pretenders
3/5
3 - very 80s
The Chemical Brothers
2/5
2 - Long stints of repeated sounds that just annoyed me. Elektrobank killed it for me.
Ramblin' Jack Elliott
3/5
3
Beatles
4/5
4 - amazing record, tons of classics, super recognizable. It’s safe to say the beetles improved throughout their career. Not my favorite, and hard to know if it would be so good without their name attached
Method Man
4/5
4 - I can’t ever fully enjoy this older sound because it often blends together with pretty rudimentary drum loops and fee samples. This one had a few that really stood out creatively especially in Release Yo’ Def
The Stooges
3/5
3 - decent rock album to fill 30 minutes. I'm not sure what was up with the iggy mix was about
Elvis Presley
3/5
3 - not his best imo
Boston
4/5
4- very few misses, some very iconic songs
The Gun Club
4/5
4 - surprisingly ahead of its time with some great sounds
Simple Minds
2/5
2 I didnt like either the general sound or how they remastered it, felt like a chore to get through
The Police
3/5
3 - Basically had one good song
Tracy Chapman
4/5
4 - the first half of this was especially great, got a lot of songs where I said “oh this is where this is from”
a-ha
3/5
3 - Kinda a one song album for me, the singer actually adds a lot to this one
Motörhead
3/5
3 - Felt like it dragged on with the same song over and over, cool as a live album but they wouldn’t be my first choice to go see
The Specials
3/5
2 - British bias or smth, no way this is in the greatest albums of all time
Roxy Music
3/5
3 - really different… not what I expected
Fela Kuti
2/5
2 - There’s was obviously some good in there, but this kinda goes back to how I rate things and this was not something I’d listen to again
Black Sabbath
4/5
4 - Black Sabbath was much better than I thought, also so many projects
Brian Eno
4/5
4 - such a serene and soothing listen
Japan
3/5
3 - More super chill albums, I feel like I got very little out of this one though
Mike Oldfield
4/5
4 - obviously a masterpiece but for my sake I wish it was broken up into more than two parts. No chance I’m saving a 20 min song
LCD Soundsystem
2/5
2 - you know it’s bad when you dislike even the most popular one
The Kinks
3/5
3 - not bad, just feels like a beetles copy
Ministry
3/5
3 - very hard rock
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
3 - first songs were weird but it picked up a good sound further in. I just didn’t like the narrative rock,
Skepta
4/5
4 - I got really excited for a rap album from 2016, but there wasn’t much depth. Some good tracks but if I wanted to listen to bravado I’d listen to something with better bars—all to say it was still very good
Goldfrapp
4/5
4 - very serene and a calm sort of view
TV On The Radio
5/5
5 - this is a more tentative 5, I need to relisten and really get what's going on, but a good portion of it had me captivated like many of my favorites
R.E.M.
3/5
3 - a lot of these have like one good song, and I know REM is a popular band but a lot of this does nothing, some great instrumentation throughout though
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
4/5
4 - Another one hit song album, better this time
Paul Simon
4/5
4 - love Paul Simon
The Cure
4/5
4 - I feel like I’m missing something with the cure, but I’ve been liking their stuff since I listened to their 2024 songs of a lost age album
3/5
3 - not my favorite bob dylan, but its still decent, passable music
G. Love & Special Sauce
1/5
1 - even the most popular one just hurts, honestly the wrong time period to be producing music like this--no excuse
Justice
4/5
4 - its undeniably amazing, but I feel lost in just instrumentals
Miles Davis
2/5
2 not my kind of blue
The Flaming Lips
4/5
4 - some really cool ideas and production, title tracks is amazing
The Charlatans
2/5
2 - kinda same at sounding not my style bored me a but
The Black Crowes
4/5
4 - thought this would be rock from a little earlier with how it sounded, had some songs I recognized
Eminem
4/5
4 - so much west coast influence, also is this his debut, is an LP even an album?
Suede
4/5
4 - really liked how this opened, it could use a re-listen because not listening straight through lost me
New York Dolls
4/5
4 - great example of 70s rock that isnt what I disliked about the stooges
Supergrass
4/5
4 - more than just their one song. I was expecting a lot less and it kinda surprised me
Fleetwood Mac
4/5
4 - it was really interesting to both listen in order and to listen to the less popular songs, there’s definitely a split between the well loved and the rest. I can see why it has some of the best ratings: it’s just hard to dislike
The Auteurs
4/5
4 -
Adele
5/5
5 - more of a tentative 5; maybe not my exact taste but it has its times, it’s a crazy 11 track run that conveys so much, hard not to be influenced by hearing this everywhere after its release but for a reason
Madonna
2/5
2 - just a bit boring
The Stooges
2/5
2 - its certainly an old rock album
Yes
3/5
3 - honestly not my favorite from them
The Doors
3/5
3 - I feel like a lot of these older albums are only recognized for one song
The Offspring
3/5
3 - the album is okay, some of the songs are great, some kinda blend together and give me stereotypes of the genre
Led Zeppelin
4/5
4 - some really good songs: classics, but I felt like a lot of it fell off somehow
The Zombies
3/5
3 - budget beetles, very lively but the production suffers and even the best songs are kinda dumb
The Police
3/5
3 - just another one song police album
Iron Butterfly
2/5
2 - just some old music that doesn't really appeal to me in style or delivery
The Flaming Lips
4/5
4 - at some points its electronic elton john, at others it has beat switches that rival the best hiphop product, and at others its the most introspective and serene look at our finite lives
I might have to go back to this one, but I really think the two Yoshimi Battles songs (the title track funnily enough) are what ruins the 5 for me
Bob Dylan
4/5
4 - I liked this side of Dylan better, lots of accessible tracks with a lot of meaning behind them
Pere Ubu
2/5
2
Buddy Holly & The Crickets
3/5
3 - not my thing. Some songs are good, jolly listens though.
John Prine
2/5
2 - didn’t find anything I really liked
Pulp
3/5
3 - rounding down I think, but a decent album, I unfortunately had it on in the background
Stevie Wonder
3/5
3 - very chill album from him, I think I liked sounds in the key of life a bit more, but it’s generally not my type of melodic music
The Undertones
4/5
4 - captures the whimsy of 80s rock. Kinda surface level and easy to listen to, but hardly anything to hate
Johnny Cash
3/5
3 - hard to hate cash. this album doesn’t bring his best, but the covers are a nice addition
MGMT
4/5
4 - I kinda wished it was more than the songs I already loved, but it was not a very consistent listen
Bill Evans Trio
2/5
2 - old
Soul II Soul
3/5
3 - not my club classics
Simon & Garfunkel
3/5
3 - charming but I don’t see it as a good whole project
Prince
3/5
3 - is this what pop music from today will sound like 40 years from now? I liked a few but it’s not even the best album named 1999
Iggy Pop
1/5
1 - I dislike this small niche of rock, and the last song is far too much of it
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
4 - didn’t realize who it was till a little bit in, this album has some good tracks with the beat and energy but lacks consistency and the lyrics to take it all the way
Belle & Sebastian
2/5
2 - kinda a strange listen with nice melodies but nothing very captivating or entertaining for me
Deep Purple
3/5
3 - not as easy of a listen or as captivating as their more iconic work but filled with great riffs and interesting concepts that show a bit more experimentation than a more popular side of rock that they delve into on other records
Fishbone
3/5
3 - Why is it so all over the place? It’s mostly good too?! Just so random, it literally has no genre
Pixies
3/5
3 - Pretty decent although the last bit (more than half) blended right together
Peter Tosh
2/5
2.5 - rounding down as I also add these to musicboard
someone that was listening with me told me it sounded like bob marley, and as generalist as that was, some of these songs individually remind me of the carless bop of marley's regge. However, I think this ins't doing the gene any favors as a project unto itself and 'leaglize it' seems very on the nose and diminish-able if that was really his central message
Nirvana
5/5
5 - Entertaining, highly nuanced, and delves deep into many different styles of the genre, all while doing them better than anyone else.
It’s pretty easy to see how this has remained such a classic for so long
Simply Red
2/5
2 - I don’t particularly like anything about it,
It’s certainly well done and the vocalist is very talented, but the songs don’t appeal to me
The KLF
1/5
1 - not on spotify anymore
Cat Stevens
4/5
4 - Definitly carried by a few songs but a great album in and of itself
Talking Heads
3/5
3 - Not my talking heads classic, some interesting stuff and cool musical commentary
Hole
2/5
2.5 - one sound, I thought it was going to be a lot different based on the opener
The Fall
2/5
2 - I really like some of the instrumental riffs but to e vocal style is a bit horrible to listen to at times
Aretha Franklin
3/5
3 - very clearly not my type of music but very well done
The Who
3/5
3 - these guys are too inconsistent to get a biopic I guess. Most of it was mostly alright with three pretty standout exceptions. Also didn’t know behind blue eyes originated from the who
John Martyn
2/5
1.5 a whole lotta mumbling nothing for me, not bad for some really chill melodic stuff but just kinda boring overall
Paul Simon
2/5
2 - I don’t get the Paul Simon on this one, seems unfinished and pointlessly simple—to the point where any added production improves a track by so much (think: me and Julio down by the schoolyard)
Jazmine Sullivan
4/5
4 - really interesting look into woman's perspectives in the sexual culture. The production is incredible and combined with sullivan's voice, carries the album to a surprisingly entertaining run with no luls in its short run time.
I very rarely have this complaint, but I wanted a bit of a longer project, I thought the conclusion with Girl Like Me wasn't really the end of the narrative she was giving with the tales she wove throughout, but maybe it was just meant to be a snapshot anyways.
Not every track particularly struck my taste, but it is all well done
Keith Jarrett
1/5
1 - I’m not going to listen to a whole hour of this, really not what I like in music
Screaming Trees
2/5
2/5 this has half decent songs, but it honestly lacks some substance, variation, or a good level of cohesion (both within and between tracks).
It feels like the same song repeated for the duration with an enjoyable but kinda “full of nothing” rhythm. Also I feel like each song is trying to subvert my expectations of where it’s going next.
The Divine Comedy
3/5
2.5 - I think this guy is creepy asf and the songs are kinda random and also creepy, but he does have some great vocals and every few songs there is one talking about some incredibly relevant or important stuff
Suede
2/5
2 mediocre across the whole thing
Frank Ocean
4/5
3.5 - I see the vision and I think I really got into it but I just didn’t find it as entertaining
Reminds me a lot of the first half of because the internet.
Lacks the hits that blonde does, but has all the talent, thematic elements, and overall scope of a great album
Cheap Trick
3/5
2.5 - I feel like I have a special place for live albums but this was kinda mid
Simon & Garfunkel
3/5
3 years quaint little album that says a lot about aging, but like most s&g, lacks more than one or two standout songs
Ray Charles
2/5
2 - I like the production of these old albums but after the first two songs it just gets annoying to listen to
Jimi Hendrix
2/5
2 - Hendrix always delivers with his bigger tracks, what a way to start the album.
Very well preformed album overall, especially compared to other albums from this era.
I loose a lot from these old albums in their production. Something like I Don’t Live Today will never be anything but distracting and annoying for me. Also the spit between the instruments to different sides of your headphones, needs a better remaster or something… just personal gripes I guess.
Third Stone From The Sun is wild… but I kinda dig sections of it.
List of pretty decent tracks later in the album too, but nothing stood out.
Led Zeppelin
2/5
2 - a more experimental project from them, you can see the vision and talent but I just don’t think it went anywhere. Kashmir was essentially the peak with the right mix of new sound and mass appeal I expect from a band this big, but not much else notable on the rest of the project
Bob Marley & The Wailers
2/5
2.5 - I can see how this was super influential and how reggae was emerging here, but there’s not a lot of entertaining music between the message they have. I think Marley perfects the combination of these with some of his later stuff
