First listen. I don’t know how I know of these guys and yet have never heard their music before. Somehow not what I expected. Kinda mediocre at first but grew on me after a few plays. I’ll come back to this and probably explore some of their other albums. Actually after 5 more plays I’m giving this another star.

First listen. I don’t know what this is. I don’t want to know. It was off to a good start though.

Red Hot Chili Peppers
3/5
1/1001
I would probably have given this five stars back in the cassette days. Honestly haven’t come back to hear this one more than two or three times since. Maybe it’s a four star. I don’t know. Not my vibe these days.
Fatboy Slim
3/5
2/1001
First listen. Fatboy Slim. The Praise you guy. Neve liked the song. The rest of this album however, I did enjoy and will come back to. Catchy. Fun. Druggy druggy druggy druggy druggy druggy
The Who
2/5
3/1001
First listen. I played the original and the extended version. There is a full concert version as well. The Who have just never done it for me. They have some huge hits but I don’t often play those either. This album was fine. Doubt I’ll ever play it again though.
The Cure
2/5
4/1001
First listen. Never intentionally played The Cure before. Played this 5 or 6 times. There isn’t a single moment from this album I remember the next day. I didn’t dislike it though.
Arcade Fire
4/5
5/1001
Some interesting sounds and creative oddball stuff on here. I can see how some would not like this. For me, this is one of the good ones.
Tom Waits
2/5
6/1001
First listen. I’ve heard Tom Waits somewhere before and I guess it was enough to keep me away this long. Right away I recognize the song from the movie Robots. This one isn’t bad. The rest of the album isn’t as bad as I expected it to be either. At times it has an Over the garden wall feel. A quick Google says the soundtrack was in fact inspired by Waits. One song has a Somewhere down the crazy river style. More inspiration? Sounds like Jim Morrison on another track. I did give this about eight plays. It’s not bad but I’ve done my time on this one. I understand there are 4 more Tom Waits albums to go on this project. Seems excessive given what didn’t make the list.
Herbie Hancock
1/5
7/1001
First listen. One play. I know Herbie Hancock from Rocket. That’s it. This is about as far from my tastes as you could probably get. The first thirty seconds were dope though. To my uncultured ears this sounded like old vhs porn music. My first one star review. Curiously, almost all the reviews I was shown were five stars in spite of the 3.56 rating.
Beatles
4/5
8/1001
I grew up on the capital records version of this album so I still miss the false start on I’m looking through you. All the History and hype aside. A fun and peppy collection of little jingles and a casual death threat you can sing along to. What’s not to love here? I’ll take all ya got.
Metallica
4/5
9/1001
I played the crap out of this when it came out. Probably would rate it five stars then. Honestly hasn’t gotten a lot of plays in the 2000’s though. Still sounds great.
Electric Light Orchestra
3/5
10/1001
I thought the greatest hits was all the ELO I needed but damn if this hasn’t growing on me in just a day.
The Cure
2/5
11/1001
First listen. Eleventh album in and it’s my second from The Cure. Is this a weekly thing around here? In spite of the high praise from critics, I’ve never heard a note of this before. So, same as my earlier review. There doesn’t seem to be anything here for me. Maybe if I spent more than a day on it. Nothing to hook me in though. Still, not a bad album.
Happy Mondays
2/5
12/1001
First listen. Have never heard Happy Mondays before. I gave it three plays. This one isn’t going to grow on me. I don’t think I needed to hear this.
Fugees
2/5
13/1001
First listen. I’ll need more than a day of this to rate it higher. Paying attention to the lyrics might help too. I did enjoy the singles.
Janelle Monáe
3/5
14/1001
First listen. Not normally my thing but a creative, interesting and well done enjoyable album. I’ll get back to this one sometime.
Elton John
3/5
15/1001
First listen. Sounds like the seventies right away. I know the hits. there’s a bunch on this one. Was feeling two stars but there’s more interesting things on here than just those tired old singles. Glad I listened.
Fleetwood Mac
5/5
16/1001
Here it is, the current number one album on this list. It’s all downhill from here I guess. Is it the greatest album of all time? I don’t think so. It is an album of catchy songs. One after another. Just hit after hit. After listening to this album yet again I reluctantly give this five stars.
Penguin Cafe Orchestra
2/5
17/1001
First listen. This one is unknown to me but seeing Brian Eno’s involvement made me optimistic. It was okay. Maybe another star if I spent more time with it. I’ll come back to this sometime though.
The Velvet Underground
2/5
18/1001
So I finally listened to the album with the iconic banana on the cover. I probably need to be in a different state to get why this is highly regarded by many.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
19/1001
First listen. Not a fan of Cave’s singing but overall this is good. Love the backup singing.
John Lennon
3/5
20/1001
First listen. I guess I expect something better from a former Beatle. Most of these sound like demos. Lots of screaming and Cookie Monster?
Coldplay
3/5
21/1001
First listen. Never intentionally played Coldplay before. I would listen to this again. Sounds like U2 at times.
Elvis Costello
2/5
22/1001
First listen. Last listen. Not for me.
The music is okay. The singing is not.
Blue Cheer
3/5
23/1001
First listen. A good occasion to listen to and read up on an album I’ve known about for a long time but just never got around to. You can hear who they inspired here. Maybe another star if I played it more than a day.
Flamin' Groovies
3/5
24/1001
First listen. Never heard of these guys before. That’s an album cover that says stay away. Yeah, They sound like the stones. I’ll come back to this one again sometime. It’s a jam.
6/10
Beatles
5/5
25/1001
What more needs to be said about this album? Everything and the kitchen sink is on this one. This is top tier for me.
10/10
Santana
3/5
26/1001
First listen. It’s got The Doors sound right off the hop. I’ve heard Black magic woman and Oyo como va countless times of course . Samba pa ti was the stand out for me.
5/10
Solange
2/5
27/1001
First listen.
Before: Okay, I’ve read the wiki and reviews. Beyonce has a sister in the biz. I’ve not heard of this at all. This is jazz, soul and r&b. Historically not a good thing for me but I have an open mind. Oh and it’s a double album. Fuck me.
After: Not near as bad as I was expecting. Length was not a problem either. The interludes were alright. Better than skits. This quote from The Guardian sums it up for me. "there's little punch or pop charm to the album, which boasts a surfeit of luscious textures and feisty attitudes, but a shortfall of killer melodies."
4/10
Kendrick Lamar
3/5
28/1001
Not my favorite style of music but Kendrick Lamer is undeniable and I do enjoy a good concept album.
5/10
Screaming Trees
2/5
29/1001
First listen. I have never heard screaming trees before but it does take me right back to 1996 only this sounds like what AI would produce if I asked it to make music from that year. It sounds like a stew of many other older bands. The Canadian band The tea party did this too but more effectively. I don’t listen to them either. This isn’t going to grow on me.
3/10
New York Dolls
2/5
30/1001
First listen. Sounds something like early Kiss but with much worse singing.
4/10
Tim Buckley
1/5
31/1001
First listen. What a trip. Like what you hear in movies setting the scene that it’s now the late sixties except it’s nothing cool like All along the watchtower. Hard to embrace this one for the first time in 2025.
2/10
The Smiths
2/5
32/1001
First listen. Another band where I find out the reason why I’ve never heard them before. Another album of good music but bad singing. That voice is just wild at times. Well it’s not for me anyway. It’s not a bad album, in fact it’s almost good but I’ll pass on this one.
4/10
Culture Club
2/5
33/1001
First listen. I know the singles well. What remained didn’t reveal any hidden gems or all out rockers. Never considered this new wave.
4/10
Eels
2/5
34/1001
First listen. Wish the rest of the album sounded as good as the first song. 3 plays and can’t think of anything else to add. Meh.
4/10
Pretenders
4/5
35/1001
I think this is a great album. I don’t play this one enough. Are there a thousand better albums? I don’t think so.
8/10
Dr. Octagon
3/5
36/1001
First listen. I can’t believe I’ve never heard of Dr. Octagon before. After tomorrow’s album I’ll be getting right back to this one. Killer Pushead cover too.
6/10
Derek & The Dominos
2/5
37/1001
First listen. Layla and some other shit. This is like way back in the day when you hear that song on the radio you love and just can’t wait to hear it again and again so you save up and buy the album and then there’s nothing else on there that sounds like that one song. But you try like hell to like it cause it’s all you got till your next allowance. Well it’s streaming now bitch and I don’t have to try and like your shit so I’m Movin’ on.
3/10
Roxy Music
3/5
38/1001
First listen. I don’t know about this one. There’s something interesting going on here. I don’t think I can give this a fair rating in just a few listens. The singing is a bit much for me though. Reminds of the band Japan.
5/10
Run-D.M.C.
3/5
39/1001
Back in the day, License to ill was my go to when I wanted to listen to rap. This is almost as good to me but not quite.
6/10
Peter Gabriel
3/5
40/1001
I saw a great documentary about the making of this album. Some of these songs are huge singles, others outright forgettable and the rest are pretty okay to me.
6/10
The Who
2/5
41/1001
First listen. Had to check again to see if I was actually listening to the right album. This is The Who? I have never understood this band. Their singles are good but everything else to my ears just sounds made up on the spot.
4/10
Miles Davis
3/5
42/1001
Okay. I know this is regarded as one of the greats but I’m going to need more time to come around to jazz music. This sounds like a Charlie Brown special to me.
5/10
2/5
43/1001
First listen. Never heard of this band before. Nothing caught my ear in the five plays I gave it. Another album where the band is okay but the singer is shit.
3/10
The Blue Nile
2/5
44/1001
First listen. Another album from a band I’ve never heard of which is great but it’s another dud that leaves me questioning this list. Pretty generic sounding music. Nothing memorable to me.
3/10
Garbage
4/5
45/1001
An old favourite. I love just about everything on this album. Doesn’t get much play nowadays though.
8/10
Linkin Park
2/5
46/1001
I loved One step closer back in the day of Napster and LimeWire. I skimmed the rest and nothing was near as good as that one song. Listening now, I should have given it more of a chance. It sounds good but just not my jam these days.
4/10
Manic Street Preachers
4/5
46/1001
First listen. I don’t know how I know of these guys and yet have never heard their music before. Somehow not what I expected. Kinda mediocre at first but grew on me after a few plays. I’ll come back to this and probably explore some of their other albums. Actually after 5 more plays I’m giving this another star.
7/10
Bad Brains
2/5
48/1001
First listen. Never heard them before but heard of them. Not what I expected. Good music. Not good singing. This one just rolled off of me.
3/10
Cat Stevens
2/5
49/1001
First listen. Can’t believe I’ve never heard the original Wild world before. I was pleasantly surprised with how different it sounded from the more popular takes on it. The rest didn’t do much for me though.
4/10
Neneh Cherry
2/5
50/1001
First listen. Buffalo stance is a great catchy dance song. This rest of this album though? Just why? This list is so silly at times. Sounded like Do the Bartman was gonna be next. This definitely transported me back to 1989. Not bad, just not for me.
4/10
Nine Inch Nails
5/5
51/1001
This thing is a monster. This album and all the following remixes were my life at the time. It was like nothing I’d ever heard before. The production on this is a beast too if you can hear it on something other than a phone speaker.
10/10
Todd Rundgren
2/5
52/1001
First listen. Never sought out a Todd Rundgren song before much less a whole album. A double album even!
I like that each side has its own theme. I like that they’re only 3 or 4 minutes long. There’s a clear radio single here and then the rest. Sounds fine but I’m not coming back to this.
4/10
Alice In Chains
3/5
53/1001
First listen. I love the big names in grunge but just never got into Alice In Chains. I have heard the singles but never listened to them. I could get into this album though and will revisit this band again in the future based on everything I heard between the singles.
5/10
The Shamen
2/5
54/1001
First listen. Seriously? Like when your Dad reveals he was in a band in the nineties and springs this one on you. I’ve never heard of En-Tact before and this did not win me over. Maybe I would have been into this when it was released. Sounds like I’m hearing every preset on the keyboard at RadioShack. It would be great if it was explained why each album is actually on this list because some of these just seem absurd. Maybe that’s in the book though.
3/10
Brian Eno
3/5
55/1001
First listen. This is an odd little album. It doesn’t stay in one spot too long. It’s got kind of a quirky vibe to start and is super chill by the end. I will revisit.
5/10
The Rolling Stones
3/5
56/1001
First listen. I’ve read the reviews and “misogynistic” was in there a LOT! So i’m ready. Also one reviewer really, really, REALLY hates Mick Jagger! Never been much of a fan of early Stones myself. The singles are fine. I recognize a fair amount of songs on both versions of this album. Hard to get into new old stuff at this point though.
5/10
Count Basie & His Orchestra
3/5
57/1001
First listen. This will get your toe tapping and your spirits up. Far removed from what I would normally listen to on a regular day. That was before the album a day challenge of course. This does makes me want to dig deeper into the Count Basie catalogue.
6/10
Black Sabbath
4/5
58/1001
This may be my least favourite Ozzy era Sabbath album. It was so long ago that I played this fully into the ground. Hard to rate this one. I think it’s the 3 singles on this that I’m just sick of. The rest of the album is still great though.
7/10
Underworld
3/5
59/1001
First listen. I have listened to hundreds of hours of this style of music and have seldom come across the same song twice. So this is just more of the same, somewhat generic music to me. I love it but it doesn’t stand apart from all the rest. I would put Rowla on a playlist though.
5/10
Hugh Masekela
2/5
60/1001
First listen. Five seconds in and I’m giving this a 3/10 (tolerable). In fact I’m writing this review now. If anything changes in the next hour and fifteen minutes I’ll update my rating. I have an open mind but jazz?
3/10
Chicago
3/5
61/1001
First listen. I didn’t get to play this too much today but I will say this was a lot better than the Chicago I was expecting. Free form guitar is bananas! I don’t think this is my kind of music but there might be something here for me actually. I think I will play this again in the future to see if it could grow on me some more. A surprising three stars.
5/10
Cee Lo Green
3/5
62/1001
First listen. This was enjoyable enough. I actually might play this again sometime. Just barely three stars.
5/10
Crosby, Stills & Nash
2/5
63/1001
First listen. I struggle to get into this old stuff I haven’t heard before. Mostly due to its inclusions in soundtracks of media depicting the era from which the music was released. This sounds well done though, I just don’t want to hear it. Maybe with this project I’ll become more receptive to these old timey albums.
4/10
Jeff Buckley
3/5
64/1001
First listen. I know the name but haven’t heard one of these songs before. I was waiting for the big single but it never came. This is a pretty slow burn the whole way. I gave it a fair shot and will listen to this again when the mood is right.
5/10
Suicide
2/5
65/1001
First listen. I don’t know what this is. I don’t want to know. It was off to a good start though.
4/10
Charles Mingus
2/5
67/1001
First listen. Sounds like a bunch of generic noodling that I can’t distinguish from any of the other jazz entries on this list.
3/10
The Doors
4/5
68/1001
After 8 never before heard albums in a row this feels like a day off. I’ll give it a spin anyway but I already have my rating. Maybe my third or even fourth favourite Doors album. It is hard to rank them as they all have great songs mixed with weird shit. But I think most of The Doors will get 4 stars from me.
7/10
Anita Baker
2/5
69/1001
First listen. I’m doing this challenge because I can give any album a fair. chance. This one sounds like the musical equivalent of wearing ladies underwear. This just isn’t made for me. I feel like It would be weird if I did like this. It’s not bad though.
3/10
Prince
4/5
70/1001
A great album with huge hits that I probably don’t play often enough. Always enjoy it when I do. A great start and a great finish. About as ‘80s as it gets.
7/10
Bob Dylan
3/5
71/1001
Not a big Dylan fan but enjoy the hits. Another artist I’d probably enjoy more if I paid attention to the lyrics. I’ll come back to this one day.
5/10
4/5
72/1001
First listen. I don’t know why I haven’t dug deeper into these guys. I like enough of their singles. I was way into this one. A little throw back to guitar hero in There as well. I’ll be back for more.
7/10
Billy Joel
3/5
73/1001
I recently enjoyed the Billy Joel documentary and have enjoyed his music on the radio but have never played a whole album before. This was alright. I’d add Movin’ out to a greatest hits playlist.
5/10
Various Artists
2/5
74/1001
First listen. Haven’t ever heard a good Christmas album. If you’re going to listen to Christmas music, it’s gotta be a playlist.
4/10
John Coltrane
2/5
75/1001
First listen. It’s jazz. It just sounds like a warm up before the actual music begins but it never does. Thankfully it was only 32 minutes.
3/10
Fela Kuti
3/5
76/1001
First listen. Never heard of this guy before. I have heard badass Ginger Baker though. Others calling this jazz, I don’t think so because I liked this. I’ll be digging further into Fela Kuti’s discography.
5/10
Funkadelic
2/5
77/1001
First listen. I feel like maybe I should like this more. It’s enjoyable enough but don’t know that I would seek this out again. I could cut and paste my reviews at this point for some of these albums. Nice to hear the source of the sample used on Rill Rill by Sleigh bells. They make a meal out of Can you get to that.
4/10
A Tribe Called Quest
2/5
78/1001
First listen. This makes jazz more listenable but it still has some jazz so I don’t want to listen to it again.
4/10
My Bloody Valentine
2/5
79/1001
First listen. Apt album cover. A narrow field of colour from a broader spectrum. It looks like it sounds. I’m sure I only know of this band from their merch at Hot topic. I’ve never come across shoegaze music in the wild before. Not the sort of stuff you hear through the regular channels. I could probably get into this if I spent enough time with it. There’s nothing going on here making me want to do that though.
3/10
Lynyrd Skynyrd
3/5
80/1001
In my ratings I’ve never factored in how shitty the artists are in their personal time. Hell, I don’t even factor in their lyrics. This was an enjoyable album. More so than many on this list. Reading the reviews, maybe I should be listening in secrecy. It’s fine. I seldomly listen to Skynyrd anyway.
6/10
Sly & The Family Stone
2/5
81/1001
First listen. Not my vibe.
3/10
AC/DC
3/5
82/1001
These guys have some great songs. Some bands like the Eagles have a greatest hits album bigger than all their other albums. AC/DC seems like they would be one of those bands. A band that I enjoy when I hear them but almost never play them intentionally.
6/10
David Bowie
2/5
83/1001
First listen. In yesterday’s review I said AC/DC sounds like one of those bands that would have a greatest hits that that was bigger than any of their other albums like the Eagles. I would add Steve Miller, ABBA, E.L.O. and David Bowie to that list as well. Currently Changesbowie is enough Bowie for me. This album didn’t make me want to hear more.
4/10
Pere Ubu
2/5
84/1001
First listen. Never heard of Pere Ubu before. I played it a couple times. It was alright. I don’t think I need any more of this. The music was ok. The singing, not so much.
3/10
Blondie
3/5
85/1001
First listen. I know two of these singles well. Never took an interest beyond that. This was one of the more enjoyable unheard albums to come from this list. I’m not so sure I’ll ever play it again though. Reluctantly three stars.
5/10
New Order
2/5
86/1001
First listen. I’ve heard two songs by New order before. They did not prepare me for this. The music was fine but my god that singing is awful. I got second hand embarrassment listening to what sounds like should have been a private moment. Good on ya if you suck at something and do it anyway and then succeed! People calling this a masterpiece. Ick.
3/10
The Divine Comedy
3/5
87/1001
First listen. I’ve never heard of The divine comedy. Nothing like I would normally listen to but with multiple plays it’s hooked me in. This guy sounds a little like Jim Morrison in places. He even says just break on through at one point. I don’t normally put any consideration into lyrics but these are hard to miss and hilarious at times. I’m not sure what to make of this.
5/10
Goldfrapp
3/5
88/1001
First listen. I like this immediately. Sparse. Strange vibes. Sounds old and new at the same time but that’s trip-hop I suppose. I look forward to hearing more.
5/10
Stan Getz
3/5
89/1001
First listen. I know what I don’t like and this isn’t it.
5/10
Frank Sinatra
2/5
90/1001
First listen. About what I expected. Honestly, I liked “I’ve got you under my skin” with Bono better.
4/10
The Bees
2/5
91/1001
First listen. Another unremarkable album. I kept playing it but it’s still just okay to me. Movin’ on.
4/10
Nina Simone
2/5
92/1001
First listen. I listened to this all day and it was enjoyable but this, like so many other albums on this list, I just don’t know when else I would really play it. This is a great reason to participate in this project. I’m probably not going to listen to it again but hey, now I’ve finally listened to it.
Also, Jeff Buckley (64/1001) was really into Simone and now I can really hear the influence.
4/10
Iggy Pop
3/5
93/1001
First listen. Curiously I have no memory of hearing the song Lust for life until I was in my 20’s when it was on the Trainspotting soundtrack. When I found out it was Iggy pop I was startled. He doesn’t make good music I thought. In spite of this and then finding out The passenger was him as well I still didn’t think there was anything more to this guy. Creepy 70’s lyrics aside this was a good pick today. Definitely has the Bowie sound. I did not expect to like this at all. I’m not sure why. Will listen to this again though.

Memorable riffs, Great production and a cool confident vibe. Flo and Eddies backing are the cherry on top.

Hawkwind

95/1001
First listen. I’ve Never heard one Hawkwind song that I know of but I know the name. Didn’t get the best opportunity to take all this in today but this is rockin’ enough to make me come back for more even with the goofy poetry.

This one was in several album of the year lists but it still took me a few years to warm up to it. In fact it was their next album that won me over. The music is great. The vocals threw me. Not something I just throw on any old time.

First listen. Jazz. I just don’t get it.

First listen. Nothing is catching my ear on this one. Unremarkable. Unmemorable.

First listen. I mostly know only the hits. I’ll listen again when I’m in a Neil Young mood. Love the title track.

100/1001
First listen. It’s pretty rockin’. There’s some interesting things going on throughout. Each song has something unique. I don’t think I need any more of this though.

Led Zeppelin

I love Zeppelin. The early albums? Not so much. This one isn’t really making the juice run down my leg. Sir! That is gross. These guys really start to take off at album III for me.

Pet Shop Boys

102/1001
First listen. Thirty years ago I would have just said this is gay. Today this sounds like it could have been made on my phone. There’s something about it I don’t like and I don’t want to hear any more of it.
3/10
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

103/1001
First listen. I don’t know what these hippies are on about. I suspect this is appreciated more for the lyrics. The music doesn’t do much for me. Lovely harmonizing though. The addition of Young doesn’t up my rating from the C,S&N album a month ago.

First listen. Not at all what I thought krautrock was. This was alright. Experimental is always interesting to me. Definitely not something you can fully appreciate in a couple of listens. It does make me want to explore further into this krautrock thing now that I know it’s not Scorpions and Rammstein.

Slade

105/1001
First listen. Never cared for Slade. Maybe their connection to Quiet Riot, a band I liked for a minute in my early teens. Wasn’t as bad I was expecting.
The recording sounded like a warbled old cassette in places. That hairdo though. Would listen again.

First listen. Ahh the ‘80s! Even as a metalhead, everything else on the charts was still pretty catchy. I thought I was too cool for this when it came out but it was an enjoyable listen today. Hell, I’ll take She bop all day, any day.

107/1001
First listen. Punk music. I don’t get it. Amateur vocals. Weak production. It all sounds so Low effort to me. That could all be forgiven if the songs were there. Sounds like all attitude no substance to my ear. Some punk reviews as well. I gUeSs I’m A sNoB!

Sabu

108/1001
First listen. Something out of the ordinary. So far removed from the usual listen I don’t know how to rate this. The vocals aren’t blowing me away but this has got a vibe. Maybe in a couple years when I’m done with the 1001 I’ll check back in on this.

Sinead O'Connor

109/1001
First listen. Really thought this was going to surprise me with how good it was. Nothing caught my ear on this one other than the big single which seems out of place hearing the rest of the album. I’m certainly not the target market for this album though. I did give the prince version a go and it was pretty clunky so she did a great job fixing that one up.

First listen. This did nothing for me. There’s definitely worse music so I can’t give it one star. The best of ‘74? C’mon!
