I would probably have given this five stars back in the cassette days. Honestly haven’t come back to hear this one more than two or three times since. Maybe it’s a four star. I don’t know. Not my vibe these days.
2/1001
First listen. Fatboy Slim. The Praise you guy. Neve liked the song. The rest of this album however, I did enjoy and will come back to. Catchy. Fun. Druggy druggy druggy druggy druggy druggy
3/1001
First listen. I played the original and the extended version. There is a full concert version as well. The Who have just never done it for me. They have some huge hits but I don’t often play those either. This album was fine. Doubt I’ll ever play it again though.
4/1001
First listen. Never intentionally played The Cure before. Played this 5 or 6 times. There isn’t a single moment from this album I remember the next day. I didn’t dislike it though.
5/1001
Some interesting sounds and creative oddball stuff on here. I can see how some would not like this. For me, this is one of the good ones.
6/1001
First listen. I’ve heard Tom Waits somewhere before and I guess it was enough to keep me away this long. Right away I recognize the song from the movie Robots. This one isn’t bad. The rest of the album isn’t as bad as I expected it to be either. At times it has an Over the garden wall feel. A quick Google says the soundtrack was in fact inspired by Waits. One song has a Somewhere down the crazy river style. More inspiration? Sounds like Jim Morrison on another track. I did give this about eight plays. It’s not bad but I’ve done my time on this one. I understand there are 4 more Tom Waits albums to go on this project. Seems excessive given what didn’t make the list.
7/1001
First listen. One play. I know Herbie Hancock from Rocket. That’s it. This is about as far from my tastes as you could probably get. The first thirty seconds were dope though. To my uncultured ears this sounded like old vhs porn music. My first one star review. Curiously, almost all the reviews I was shown were five stars in spite of the 3.56 rating.
8/1001
I grew up on the capital records version of this album so I still miss the false start on I’m looking through you. All the History and hype aside. A fun and peppy collection of little jingles and a casual death threat you can sing along to. What’s not to love here? I’ll take all ya got.
9/1001
I played the crap out of this when it came out. Probably would rate it five stars then. Honestly hasn’t gotten a lot of plays in the 2000’s though. Still sounds great.
10/1001
I thought the greatest hits was all the ELO I needed but damn if this hasn’t growing on me in just a day.
11/1001
First listen. Eleventh album in and it’s my second from The Cure. Is this a weekly thing around here? In spite of the high praise from critics, I’ve never heard a note of this before. So, same as my earlier review. There doesn’t seem to be anything here for me. Maybe if I spent more than a day on it. Nothing to hook me in though. Still, not a bad album.
12/1001
First listen. Have never heard Happy Mondays before. I gave it three plays. This one isn’t going to grow on me. I don’t think I needed to hear this.
13/1001
First listen. I’ll need more than a day of this to rate it higher. Paying attention to the lyrics might help too. I did enjoy the singles.
14/1001
First listen. Not normally my thing but a creative, interesting and well done enjoyable album. I’ll get back to this one sometime.
15/1001
First listen. Sounds like the seventies right away. I know the hits. there’s a bunch on this one. Was feeling two stars but there’s more interesting things on here than just those tired old singles. Glad I listened.
16/1001
Here it is, the current number one album on this list. It’s all downhill from here I guess. Is it the greatest album of all time? I don’t think so. It is an album of catchy songs. One after another. Just hit after hit. After listening to this album yet again I reluctantly give this five stars.
17/1001
First listen. This one is unknown to me but seeing Brian Eno’s involvement made me optimistic. It was okay. Maybe another star if I spent more time with it. I’ll come back to this sometime though.
18/1001
So I finally listened to the album with the iconic banana on the cover. I probably need to be in a different state to get why this is highly regarded by many.
19/1001
First listen. Not a fan of Cave’s singing but overall this is good. Love the backup singing.
20/1001
First listen. I guess I expect something better from a former Beatle. Most of these sound like demos. Lots of screaming and Cookie Monster?
21/1001
First listen. Never intentionally played Coldplay before. I would listen to this again. Sounds like U2 at times.
22/1001
First listen. Last listen. Not for me.
The music is okay. The singing is not.
23/1001
First listen. A good occasion to listen to and read up on an album I’ve known about for a long time but just never got around to. You can hear who they inspired here. Maybe another star if I played it more than a day.
24/1001
First listen. Never heard of these guys before. That’s an album cover that says stay away. Yeah, They sound like the stones. I’ll come back to this one again sometime. It’s a jam.
6/10
25/1001
What more needs to be said about this album? Everything and the kitchen sink is on this one. This is top tier for me.
10/10
26/1001
First listen. It’s got The Doors sound right off the hop. I’ve heard Black magic woman and Oyo como va countless times of course . Samba pa ti was the stand out for me.
5/10
27/1001
First listen.
Before: Okay, I’ve read the wiki and reviews. Beyonce has a sister in the biz. I’ve not heard of this at all. This is jazz, soul and r&b. Historically not a good thing for me but I have an open mind. Oh and it’s a double album. Fuck me.
After: Not near as bad as I was expecting. Length was not a problem either. The interludes were alright. Better than skits. This quote from The Guardian sums it up for me. "there's little punch or pop charm to the album, which boasts a surfeit of luscious textures and feisty attitudes, but a shortfall of killer melodies."
4/10
28/1001
Not my favorite style of music but Kendrick Lamer is undeniable and I do enjoy a good concept album.
5/10
29/1001
First listen. I have never heard screaming trees before but it does take me right back to 1996 only this sounds like what AI would produce if I asked it to make music from that year. It sounds like a stew of many other older bands. The Canadian band The tea party did this too but more effectively. I don’t listen to them either. This isn’t going to grow on me.
3/10
30/1001
First listen. Sounds something like early Kiss but with much worse singing.
4/10
31/1001
First listen. What a trip. Like what you hear in movies setting the scene that it’s now the late sixties except it’s nothing cool like All along the watchtower. Hard to embrace this one for the first time in 2025.
2/10
32/1001
First listen. Another band where I find out the reason why I’ve never heard them before. Another album of good music but bad singing. That voice is just wild at times. Well it’s not for me anyway. It’s not a bad album, in fact it’s almost good but I’ll pass on this one.
4/10
33/1001
First listen. I know the singles well. What remained didn’t reveal any hidden gems or all out rockers. Never considered this new wave.
4/10
34/1001
First listen. Wish the rest of the album sounded as good as the first song. 3 plays and can’t think of anything else to add. Meh.
4/10
35/1001
I think this is a great album. I don’t play this one enough. Are there a thousand better albums? I don’t think so.
8/10
36/1001
First listen. I can’t believe I’ve never heard of Dr. Octagon before. After tomorrow’s album I’ll be getting right back to this one. Killer Pushead cover too.
6/10
37/1001
First listen. Layla and some other shit. This is like way back in the day when you hear that song on the radio you love and just can’t wait to hear it again and again so you save up and buy the album and then there’s nothing else on there that sounds like that one song. But you try like hell to like it cause it’s all you got till your next allowance. Well it’s streaming now bitch and I don’t have to try and like your shit so I’m Movin’ on.
3/10
38/1001
First listen. I don’t know about this one. There’s something interesting going on here. I don’t think I can give this a fair rating in just a few listens. The singing is a bit much for me though. Reminds of the band Japan.
5/10
39/1001
Back in the day, License to ill was my go to when I wanted to listen to rap. This is almost as good to me but not quite.
6/10
40/1001
I saw a great documentary about the making of this album. Some of these songs are huge singles, others outright forgettable and the rest are pretty okay to me.
6/10
41/1001
First listen. Had to check again to see if I was actually listening to the right album. This is The Who? I have never understood this band. Their singles are good but everything else to my ears just sounds made up on the spot.
4/10
42/1001
Okay. I know this is regarded as one of the greats but I’m going to need more time to come around to jazz music. This sounds like a Charlie Brown special to me.
5/10
43/1001
First listen. Never heard of this band before. Nothing caught my ear in the five plays I gave it. Another album where the band is okay but the singer is shit.
3/10
44/1001
First listen. Another album from a band I’ve never heard of which is great but it’s another dud that leaves me questioning this list. Pretty generic sounding music. Nothing memorable to me.
3/10
45/1001
An old favourite. I love just about everything on this album. Doesn’t get much play nowadays though.
8/10
46/1001
I loved One step closer back in the day of Napster and LimeWire. I skimmed the rest and nothing was near as good as that one song. Listening now, I should have given it more of a chance. It sounds good but just not my jam these days.
4/10
46/1001
First listen. I don’t know how I know of these guys and yet have never heard their music before. Somehow not what I expected. Kinda mediocre at first but grew on me after a few plays. I’ll come back to this and probably explore some of their other albums. Actually after 5 more plays I’m giving this another star.
7/10
48/1001
First listen. Never heard them before but heard of them. Not what I expected. Good music. Not good singing. This one just rolled off of me.
3/10
49/1001
First listen. Can’t believe I’ve never heard the original Wild world before. I was pleasantly surprised with how different it sounded from the more popular takes on it. The rest didn’t do much for me though.
4/10
50/1001
First listen. Buffalo stance is a great catchy dance song. This rest of this album though? Just why? This list is so silly at times. Sounded like Do the Bartman was gonna be next. This definitely transported me back to 1989. Not bad, just not for me.
4/10
51/1001
This thing is a monster. This album and all the following remixes were my life at the time. It was like nothing I’d ever heard before. The production on this is a beast too if you can hear it on something other than a phone speaker.
10/10
52/1001
First listen. Never sought out a Todd Rundgren song before much less a whole album. A double album even!
I like that each side has its own theme. I like that they’re only 3 or 4 minutes long. There’s a clear radio single here and then the rest. Sounds fine but I’m not coming back to this.
4/10
53/1001
First listen. I love the big names in grunge but just never got into Alice In Chains. I have heard the singles but never listened to them. I could get into this album though and will revisit this band again in the future based on everything I heard between the singles.
5/10
54/1001
First listen. Seriously? Like when your Dad reveals he was in a band in the nineties and springs this one on you. I’ve never heard of En-Tact before and this did not win me over. Maybe I would have been into this when it was released. Sounds like I’m hearing every preset on the keyboard at RadioShack. It would be great if it was explained why each album is actually on this list because some of these just seem absurd. Maybe that’s in the book though.
3/10
55/1001
First listen. This is an odd little album. It doesn’t stay in one spot too long. It’s got kind of a quirky vibe to start and is super chill by the end. I will revisit.
5/10
56/1001
First listen. I’ve read the reviews and “misogynistic” was in there a LOT! So i’m ready. Also one reviewer really, really, REALLY hates Mick Jagger! Never been much of a fan of early Stones myself. The singles are fine. I recognize a fair amount of songs on both versions of this album. Hard to get into new old stuff at this point though.
5/10
57/1001
First listen. This will get your toe tapping and your spirits up. Far removed from what I would normally listen to on a regular day. That was before the album a day challenge of course. This does makes me want to dig deeper into the Count Basie catalogue.
6/10
58/1001
This may be my least favourite Ozzy era Sabbath album. It was so long ago that I played this fully into the ground. Hard to rate this one. I think it’s the 3 singles on this that I’m just sick of. The rest of the album is still great though.
7/10
59/1001
First listen. I have listened to hundreds of hours of this style of music and have seldom come across the same song twice. So this is just more of the same, somewhat generic music to me. I love it but it doesn’t stand apart from all the rest. I would put Rowla on a playlist though.
5/10
60/1001
First listen. Five seconds in and I’m giving this a 3/10 (tolerable). In fact I’m writing this review now. If anything changes in the next hour and fifteen minutes I’ll update my rating. I have an open mind but jazz?
3/10
