Bitte Orca by Dirty Projectors

First album i’ve ever listened to by Dirty Projectors and it was quite good. Loved the prog-rock and psychedelic inspirations for the album as a whole. The album artwork is really interesting as it prompted me to listen to the music as soon as possible. My favourite tracks were the opener Cannibal Resource, Temecula Sunrise, Stillness is the Move and Useful Chamber. The whimsical and odd lyrics of useful chamber also have a reprise where the albums title is repeated and that alongside the folky instrumentation made me love it even more. GEMV (11.12.2025) Rating: 3.5-4/5

Blue by Joni Mitchell

Very good album I really enjoyed it. The 3rd Mitchell album I have listened to, I really enjoyed the folk rock elements in this album which were present throughout and made a pleasant impression on me. Track wise I really enjoyed the lyricism in ‘River’ the title track ‘Blue’, ‘Little Green’. In ‘Little Green’, “the little green have a happy ending” line reminded me of the cyclical nature of winter or the assumed rocky relationship. As it highlighted the changes in one’s life from thorny icicles and birthdays as the main character aims to better themselves. All in all, this album was very good. 5/5 -GEMV (12.01.2026)

Ocean Rain by Echo And The Bunnymen

‘Silver’ is a great album opener it makes me feel like one of those practical magic witches. The use of strings elevate the track alongside the vocals. ‘The Killing Moon’ is an iconic track!! “under a blue moon I saw you” It’s definitely one of my favourites on the album alongside the Title Track and closer. It’s a good post-punk/ psychedelic rock! The mood and atmosphere created by the album in my mind were laced with wilted roses in a gothic manor, endlessly aching for love to reach it. Ratings wise it’s a 4/5 again!-GEMV (27.01.2026)

1989 by Taylor Swift
Dec 11 2025

It’s a classic pop album for a reason. This is my first time listening to an album other than Folklore in full and it lived up to the hype. A track I really enjoyed was Wildest Dreams. It was a banger and the guitar tone in Style is very catchy. I enjoyed the 2 ending tracks in particular as I know places and Clean have lovely lyricism and production behind it. Looking forward to the next album to review!- GEMV (10.12.2025)

Blood On The Tracks by Bob Dylan
Dec 14 2025

A funky and classic folk rock album, this is the second Bob Dylan album i’ve listened to. You’re a Big Girl now, Idiot Wind and If you see her say hello, were my favourites. I’m definitely in my folk era now. Looking forward to tomorrow’s album. -GEMV (13.12.2025) Rating: 4/5

The Sounds Of India by Ravi Shankar
Dec 16 2025

I’ve always admired Shankar’s works from the BBC retrospectives and Proms renditions. It’s a very lovely album that has allowed me to have a small deep dive into Indian Classical music. They’re all great pieces of music i particularly enjoyed Dádrá and Marú-Bihág- GEMV (15.15.2025) Rating: 4/5

Time (The Revelator) by Gillian Welch
Dec 17 2025

A nice album, very poignant I enjoyed April 14th, Ruination Day and Everything is Free. As the lyrics for those tracks are very poignant backed by a rock-like folk bg. I really enjoyed this album all in all. Still thinking about what else I could write about it. I love Gillian Jacobs for real.- GEMV (16.12.2025) Rating: 4/5

I'm Your Man by Leonard Cohen
Dec 18 2025

This was such a fun album to listen to, I felt like I was in an 80’s movie! First we take Manhattan is a very groovy opening track. I really liked the album but the highlight track was Jazz City, it was such a cinematic experience and the jazz city adlibs?? Rating: 4/5

Third by Soft Machine

This Year's Model by Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Jan 06 2026

A good album my first introduction to Costello and The Attractions, this also doubles as my introduction to alternative music in the 70’s and classic punk. I surprisingly enjoyed the album as I haven’t delved into any music aside from Bowie and more permanente fixtures like the Smiths , Blondie, Talking Heads and the Cure. The first two tracks, No Action and This Years Girl are my favorite tracks in the album as they set the groovy and partly abrasive tone the following tracks use. However my gripe is that a lot of them sounded quite similar with Costolloes vocals and synths being in a similar key. That being said Radio, Radio is a good ending track!! (05.01.2026) GEMV

Two Dancers by Wild Beasts
Jan 07 2026

This album was a fun listen it felt like I was listening a psychedelic tinged ‘indie sleaze’ band. The tracks I took a liking too where ‘When I’m Sleepy’ and ‘Fundpower Plot’. I don’t really have a proper opinion on the latter half of the album because I need to re-listen. - (6.01.26) GEMV

New Forms by Roni Size
Jan 08 2026

JUNGLE!! Drum and Bass!! I like the album cover it’s so cool to see the Gen-X Soft Club / late 90’s graphic style. Brown Paper Bag’ is a tune ‘Jazz’ and ‘Ballet Dance’ are very groovy tracks and are good to work/study to. ‘Electrickz’ is quite reminiscent of the Sonic the Hedgehog/ SS Tricky/ Jet Set Radio era for games that game later with the drum pattern and shouts throughout. It’s a great album all in all, I really enjoyed it and will try to check out Roni Size and Reprazent’s work. :Dc - GEMV (07.01.2026)

Songs From A Room by Leonard Cohen
Jan 09 2026

Good Leonard Cohen album as always. When I was listening to the tracks in order I felt like I was listening to poetry. Poetry which was neatly nestled into the winter season with a film. - GEMV (08.01.2026)

Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division
Jan 14 2026

Gothic new wave?!! It’s a very good album I thoroughly enjoyed it. The dark and moody atmosphere built up the by the synths made it feel like I was stranded in an abandoned castle with flickers of light as my salvation. The dark sound amplified my favourites for this album listen as ‘Disorder’, ‘Day of the Lords’, and ‘Wilderness’ were the tracks I was drawn to the most. I’ll definitely explore the rest of their catalogue in due course, but at least understand why this album and its cover are so prevalent in pop culture. - GEMV (13.01.2026)

Jan 15 2026

Extremely haunting record which links to a The Virgin Suicides. I enjoyed this record though, it was quite interesting to listen to the gloomy electronica. It brought out a sinister sense of malaise, coupled with the clipped vocals and droning instruments. I enjoyed ‘Playground Love’ and ‘Bathroom Girl’ the other tracks tapped into the mood of the film. Which to me read as dread and the discovery of something sinister. To conclude it was a nice listen 3.5/5 - GEMV (15.01.2026)

Jan 17 2026

A CLASSIC! This album was a superb listen through and through, I had always enjoyed this style of 90’s rap. The examples I have for this are ‘Passin Me By’ and ‘Soul Flower’. But I must say all of the tracks flowed nicely together and the skits were a great addition. I cant think of an album I’ve personally listened to that has included them, but im happy to look for more. Will definitely log ‘Labcabcalifornia’ next!!- GEMV (16.01.2026) - 5/5

Since I Left You by The Avalanches
Jan 18 2026

Another CLASSIC! I really enjoyed this album the use of sampling, cool mixes kept me engaged as I listened to this during my commute today. If I had to choose a track, it would be ‘Radio’, ‘Electricity’, ‘Etoh’ and ‘Frontier Psychiatrist’ These were the tracks which stood out to me and really allowed me to imagine the world that was composed for each track. ‘ Frontier Psychiatrist’ was oddly nostalgic because it was used in flipnotes over a decade ago for multiple fandoms I used to be in such as the Fnaf, OFF and several other video-game franchises. Now the rating for this is a bit tricky, but I’ve landed on a nice 4/5 because of how fun I found this body of work.

Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park
Jan 21 2026

Emo kid central! A classic I must say. It was quite a depressing listen when I took in Chester and Mike’s lyrics as the somber tone of the album came to light. After years of ironically listening to Linken Park because of anime and Sonic AMVs in the late 2000s, this serious listen made me appreciate their work more. The tracks I leaned into aside from ‘In the End’ where ‘With You’, ‘Crawling’ and ‘A place for my Head’. However I really enjoyed the more nu-metal tinged tracks like with you and runaway. The screams in this album are really good too, they fully immerse you into the grungy, lime tinged/ industrial atmosphere this album brings out. An easy 4/5-GEM. (20/01/2026)

Live! by Fela Kuti
Jan 22 2026

Nigerian Icon! I grew up listening to Fela with my family so this is a pleasant surprise. It was a very enjoyable listen to hear all of these songs live from the long intros, to Fela’s adlibs and the help of Afrika 70 and Ginger Baker with the drumming and instruments. All of the songs in this album were great from the opener ‘Let’s Start’ which could still be viewed as an anthem today, to Black Man’s Cry’, ‘Ye Ye De Smell’, ‘Egbe Mi O’ and the ‘Ginger Baker and Tony Allen Drum Solo’. It melded a vivacious blend of highlife and jazz that I’ve grown up to love in a Nigerian family. This album is also one of the easiest 5/5’s so far! - GEMV (21.01.2026)

Tanto Tempo by Bebel Gilberto
Jan 23 2026

A very groovy and summer-themed album, this was reminiscent of having a margarita or fresh mango on a beach. I thoroughly enjoyed this album it was quite enjoyable. I had never heard of Bebel Gilberto, however I had listened to her father’s (Joao Gilberto) work in passing. Tanto Tempo, blends Bossa Nova and electronic genres in an ethereal fashion the mix of Brazilian Portuguese and English in tracks such as ‘Mais Feliz’ and ‘So Nice’. In ‘Mais Feliz’ the guitar strumming and lyrics about a love thats comparable to a book or river. It’s a longer track and is definitely one of my favourites alongside ‘Bananeria’. The cover is an earworm!!! I’m singling out these three tracks because of the effect they had on me when I listened to it on my commute. Taking me out the morning funk and into a better mood for the day ahead. Ratings wise, I landed on a comfortable 4/5 because of how fun I found this album. - GEMV (22.01.2026)

Bandwagonesque by Teenage Fanclub

such a good modern classic. I’ve heard of Teenage Fanclub but this was such a fun listen the grungy guitars and drumming made my day. Tracks I enjoyed were ‘The Concept’, ‘Star Sign’ and ‘Pet Rock’ A good 3.5/5-GEMV (26.01.2026)

Celebrity Skin by Hole
Jan 29 2026

Holy! ‘Awful’ is a good track that rips into terrible men. ‘Malibu’, ‘Use Once and Destroy’ and ‘Northern Star’ are songs that I really enjoyed as they intensified the post-punk / alternative rock atmosphere set out in the opener ‘Celebrity Skin’. Alongside that the blunt lyrics sung by Love which speak to the experience of womanhood, depression and the idolisation of the ‘celebrities’. I enjoyed the visual imagery brought out in ‘Northern Star’ with “Charity and gratitude. They run to the pines. It's black in here blot out the sun. And run to the pines. Our misery runs wild and free And I knew, the fire and the ashes of his grace. And I wait staring at the Northern Star” To conclude this album like many others I have reviewed will enter my go to albums or self-described ‘Music Emporium’ going forward. Ratings wise this is a solid 4/5 once again. - GEMV (28.12.2026)

Sulk by The Associates
Jan 30 2026

Good album 3/5 for me- GEMV (29.01.2025)

Makes me proud to be a Dub! ‘A Beautiful Day’ reminds me of the spring, summer and autumn months during the Celtic Tiger era and my childhood. This song was played incessantly on 98FM during drives around the City or on trips to Wicklow and Cork. All in all it’s a great tune. ‘Elevation’ is good stadium rock with an electronic tinge and great guitar riffs by The Edge and Bono’s vocals are great here. WALK ON!!! ‘Wild Honey’ is an absurdist track, the opening like where Bono describes his escapades with his lover, all while framing it as being a monkey or the precursor to modern man is insane on the first listen. I did enjoy the track in full. Very easy 4/5-GEMV (30.01.2026)

Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
Feb 02 2026

A super funky band I don’t know how to think about it. It’s like a weirded slimy cheese, i’m not sure that I’d listen to this as often as the Soft Boys album from yesterday but Captain Beefheart did his thing. Had to split my listening between Youtube and Spotify.-GEMV (01.02.2026)

Idlewild by Everything But The Girl
Feb 03 2026
Slanted And Enchanted by Pavement
Feb 04 2026

2nd Pavement album! ‘Summer Babe- Winter Version’ is a nice gritty intro. The second track ‘Triggercut/Wound Lit At: 17’ is a track that makes me think of someone with a nervous disposition, coupled with the odd lyrics from Malkmus. A revealing example is from the track above, “Fruit-covered nails. Electricity and lust. Won't break the door. I've got a heavy coat. It's filled with rocks and sand” . ‘Loretta’s Scars’ and ‘Perfume-V’ were also good tracks! This whole album lyrically and sonically provided me with a lot of slacker rock-energy with the quick drums and guitar from Malkmus, Kannberg, Ibold and Young. Nice little 3.5-5-GEMV (3.02.2026)

jazz! I loved this album all of the tracks were very good added it to my jazz library!!

Skylarking by XTC
Feb 08 2026

It’s a good album I’ve never heard of XTC before. The cover looks like something i would reblogged on tumblr in 2018 and the music fits that perfectly. ‘Summer’s Cauldron’ is a great opener track will definitely go into my summer seasonal playlist this year! GRASS! This is an amazing track the violins in the opening!!! Entire album is great it’s a very breezy summer album. It’s very reminiscent of the tropical water levels in 2000’s video games, I feel like i’m enveloped in a golden-sanded beach with a palm tree overhead. Veering into turquoise water which glimmers in the tangerine horizon. Another 4/5-GEMV (7.02.2026)

Blue Lines by Massive Attack
Feb 11 2026

‘Safe from Harm’ is a great album opener. The track with Tricky, ‘Blue Lines’ is a groovy snapshot of 90’s u.k. hip hop and black british culture. An essential trip hop album- 4/5(10.02.2026)

Another Green World by Brian Eno
Feb 12 2026

Very good album quite to listen to. ‘In the dark woods’, ‘Sky Saw’ the Title Track and ‘Golden Hours’ were standout tracks for me. I will write a compare dive review elsewhere. :D - GEMV (10-11.02.2026)

Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves
Feb 17 2026

My go to country album. ‘Lonely weekend’ is such a great track. However in comparison to tracks like ‘Butterflies’, ‘Oh What a World’ and ‘High Horse’, it pales in comparison. The butterfly metaphors on Butterflies are very apt and entertaining, the banjo! It works so well and the chorus in this track with ‘And you give me butterflies refrain is so fun to sing. Those three tracks are my favourites but the album as a whole is great. A modern country album, this is one of my quintessential summer albums so it’s a different to be listening to it in winter. Feels like the peek of spring. Rating 4/5- GEMV (16.02.2026)

Justified by Justin Timberlake
Feb 19 2026

A classic! Justified is a great album, it encapsulated a time in 2000’s R&B where the Neptune's were ON IT. A precursor to the mid-200’s and 2010’s sad white boy r&b. The run from the opening track ‘Señorita’ to mid tracks like ‘Rock Your Body’ is quite enjoyable to listen to on the first listen. Will need to explore the other Backstreet Boys solo records next! (4/5)- GEMV (18.02.2026)

Armed Forces by Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Feb 20 2026
Feb 24 2026

Another great Muse album. ‘Super Massive Black Hole’ is a great track not only because of the twilight soundtrack but the moody atmosphere it portrays. I really enjoyed ‘Starlight’ and ‘City of Delousion’ Rating is 3.5/5 - GEMV (23.02.2026)

Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Feb 26 2026

This double album is sublime, the story telling is rich, the greek mythology references are ample. I really enjoyed it, ‘Get Ready for Love’ has been on my music rotation for years now. The apocalyptic imagery in the lyrical content and instruments coupled with Cave’s delivery, made this a good album to brainstorm short stories too. ‘There she goes my beautiful world’ and ‘The Lyre of Orpheus’ are my other standout tracks. Ratings wise this is a 4/5- GEMV (26.02.2026)

At Mister Kelly's by Sarah Vaughan
Feb 27 2026

Such a good jazz album. I really enjoyed this the opening track ‘September in the Rain’ sets the scene of a live recording. The following tracks, ‘Willow Weep for Me’, ‘Stairway to the Stars’, ‘Honeysuckle Rose’ were lovely to listen to now that Spring has started. Rating: 4.5/5- (GEMV-26.02.2026)

Penance Soiree by The Icarus Line
Feb 28 2026

A surprisingly good punk / art rock album. I am uploading this review quite late as I wasn’t able to log in over the weekend. I really enjoyed the heaviness of the first half of the album from ‘Up Against the Wall Motherfucker’ ‘Spit On It’, ‘On the Lash’ and Caviar’ As those tracks became my favourite in the album, for some reason the second half didn’t intrigue me as much but It allowed me to understand the grungy atmosphere the band built for this body of work. The lyric in Caviar ‘true love hits like death from above’ stood out to me because of the song’s subject matter of addiction/ critique of beauty from my pint of view. The drums and sleazy guitar riffs! Those for seamlessly alongside Wattsons talk-singing. To conclude this was an excellent album to get me into the more ‘heavier’ sounds of early 2000’s rock. Not to forgot the well composed cover with the red thread and singer in motion! 4/5- Another great rock album -GEMV (26-7.02.2026)

Wild Gift by X
Mar 03 2026

I will always love fusion rock bands fronted by women!!!! This album was so fun to listen to, ‘Universal Corner”, ‘I’m coming Over’ and ‘Back 2 Base’ For ‘Beyond and Back’ the opening lines were quite interesting “I'll go somewhere else, I'll move to the couch, It's darker in the dark, it's darker in the day, I forgot you were a liar” The folksy and alt rock tone and vocals from Doe and Cervenka were sublime!! 3.5/5- Another great rock album -GEMV (26-7.02.2026)

Penthouse And Pavement by Heaven 17
Mar 05 2026

Another good album!! I loved every track on this Heavenly 17 project, The opening track is very timely ‘We don’t need this Facist Groove Thing’ we don’t need it at all, given the current situation in the world ‘Soul Warfare’ and ‘Song with No Name’ are also great tracks. This album roved how you can create good art in times of turmoil to reflect the mood and fears of the time- 4/5 GEMV (4.03.2026)

Play by Moby
Mar 06 2026

The mixing is superb! ‘Porcelian, ‘7’, ‘Run On’ ‘Everloving’ and ‘If things were perfect’ are great electronica tracks. The use of sampling and beats (?) were quite good. The ‘give me summer’ refrain in ‘If things were perfect’, juxtaposed to the looping backing track and spoken word, is very interesting and hypnotic to listen to. This album encapsulates what I think of when I image one the late 90’s minimalism and early 2000s futurism/ soft club aesthetic. And how those colour, design and sound signifiers morphed at the turn of the century. The sage greens, rust oranges and neutral tones like beige, tawny brown, cream, navy and black. Rating: 4.2 /5 GEMV (05.03.2026)

Solid Air by John Martyn
Mar 08 2026

A folk classic! I really enjoyed this first foray into John Martyn’s work the title track is great, ‘Dreams by the Sea’ and ‘Easy Blues’ were other tracks that I felt drawn to. It’s such a cozy body of work. I really enjoyed listening to it as a whole, colour -wise this is a very blue, teal, forest green, mustard yellow tinged piece. It made me feel like I was in a creek in a forest at some times and a hazy farm surrounded by a lush wheat field the next. ‘Dreams by the Sea’ and ‘Over the Hill’ show that beautifully. Ratings wise it’s getting a 3.9/5. I don’t want to seem like i’m overrating a lot of the albums I have enjoyed. That being said it’s a been a good streak!

A Wizard, A True Star by Todd Rundgren
Mar 12 2026

‘International Feel’ is such a fun opener, I need psychedelic music to come back!! The chamber rock sensibilities of ‘Never Never Land’ and Rundgren’s vocals are whimsical to say the least. It sounds like instrumentals for a desert level in a video game. Or something you’ll hear in a weird adaptation of Peter Pan. ‘Tic Tic Tic, It Wears off’ ?? This song sounds like it belongs in WiiPlay or on a flash game. The rest of the album is just as quirky and interesting to listen to I really enjoyed this on first listen. The cover is eccentric with the clash of the surrealist watercolour portrait and geometric shapes added on. Rating: 4/5 GEMV (11.03.2026)

Music for the Masses by Depeche Mode
Mar 30 2026

It’s an extremely moody album. I loved all of the tracks in these so there’s no singling out this time. ‘To Have and To Hold’ and ‘To Have and To Hold’ I was really drawn to the 80’s gothic moodiness of the album it gave me visions of Elvira, Labyrinth and Tim Burton. Rating:4/5 GEMV (29.03.2026)

Low by David Bowie
Apr 01 2026

Exceptional album! I liked the route Bowie took in this album because it’s still within the realm of psychedelia/ glam rock but it’s a bit polished. The tracks that stood out to me were ‘Sound and Vision’, ‘Be My Wife’ and ‘Warszawa’. I was going to write about Art Decade but then I remembered it’s an electronic tinged instrumental track with droning guitars and synths. The track to me sounds like I’m in an inspector gadget themed fairy world. All in all it was a great album. Rating: 4.5/5 GEMV (31.03-01.04.2026)

This must have been like listening to BMTH for some people. It’s so different in a good way. ‘We all live in the yellow submarine’, ‘She said she said’ and the great closer that is ‘Tommorrow never knows’ all being in the same album is amazing. The genre melding in this album is ahead of its time from more ‘classic rock’ to ‘psychedelic music’ inspired by classical Indian music. The lyrics are great too, ‘Changing my life with a wave of her hand. Nobody can deny that there's something there. There, running my hands through her hair’. May this kind of love find me, ‘Here there and Everywhere’, it’s such a lovely song. I’ll definitely get this in the CD format! Rating: 4.5/5 GEMV (07.04.2026)

This is a fun introduction to the Beastie Boys. The refrains in ‘Johnny Ryall’ and ‘Egg Man’ are quite silly and I guess encapsulates the humour the band brought forth. Brimming with the 80’s era NYC Rating: 3.8/5 GEMV (22.04.2026)
