This album is great and me talking about it feels a little Patrick Batemanish… this album does define rock and soul. If You Need Me and Cry For Me are legendary bangers from the 60s (that should have a cultural revival considering the attention span of Gen Z and the added bonus of the songs only being around 2 minutes). I digress, 4/5
The feeling of nostalgia. It stirs something inside the chest, which creates warmth. A longing for something lost.
Good voice, some good tunes but too Bias toward live ballads. 3.3
I mean, people probably loved this, but it really sounds kind of quaint to modern ears.
Happily listened along with this, didn't change my world but equally inoffensive.
A typical singles plus filler job as was the style for albums at the time, but a pretty good one. As the title suggests, it’s not limited to one genre, and in fact several songs have an almost country feel to them, but there are still a *lot* of soulful bluesy ballads, which mean it did get a bit samey by the end. ‘Cry to Me’ is the obvious standout, a great showcase for Burke’s voice, the album’s clear main draw. He can softly croon down low, he can powerfully shout and scream up high, he can do it all.
really quite cool. might actually come back to a few of these songs, which for 1964 soul is wild. favorite song is Won't You Give Him (One More Chance). solid 3
The SOUL. Solomon Burke has a level of soul in his voice that is unbeatable. Loved this album. "Cry to Me" is the obvious classic favorite, but there was not a track on here I did not thoroughly enjoy. "Can't Nobody Love Me" is another winner, and I got a good chuckle from how he brought other singers' names in quoting them to say they don't measure up to his love!
Celkom v pohode.
Overall uninteresting but inoffensive. 2/5
This is feel good music, didn't change my life and I won't remember any particular song, but I dig it overall
The 60s were such an interesting decade musically. On the one hand you have music like this that sounds like a holdover from the 50s. On the other hand you have music like The Beatles and Bob Dylan pushing things in a completely different direction and creating a whole new musical genre. Listening to this album, it feels like this was already a relic from the past. It’s simplistic and dated and on its way out.
Great classic rock & roll from the 60’s with that soulful vibe all the way through it. A quick, but great listen.
This was fine, but the same feeling song after song throughout the whole album felt long. I wish I could have purchased this as a cass-single instead.
Old school soul and a great voice. Bit run of the mill, but a nice listen none the less
It's very unlikely that the world of music is ever going to see another personality like Big Sol. Someone larger than life who was a licensed mortician, infamous popcorn dealer, unshakable soul singer, ever-ready business strategist, KKK survivor, wonder-boy preacher and a man who never lost his cool when James Brown tried to literally "steal" his King of Rock 'N Soul crown. That beign said, like many albums from this era there is one major flaw to this one and that is that a large majority of artists, Solomon included, were singles artists which means there are some great tracks on here and a bunch that sound very similar to those great tracks and few covers, all sang by a guy with an incredible voice (and even with that voice: yuck any time when he sings bour the "little girls"). Picking out the few interesting and highly successful singles is enough for me and for everyone, I guess.
He’s got a really good voice, and there are a couple of bangers here. The album is really soothing and the backup singers are brilliant. There are however too many slow songs, as well as a couple of country flavoured ones. Truth be told, it’s a three-stars album, but I enjoyed it so much, listening to it back to back, that I’m feeling generous today.
solid opener, very good excellent no notes
Good vibes!
High 3 at best but i dig the backing vocals
A decent album. I like his voice. I bought one of his albums that was released in the 2000s. A little more bass in his voice. This album is a decent soul album. It does have some suspect lyrics. It does start to sound the same after a while. Still a good listen
Slow and soulful.
Such a great voice, somewhat a one-topic album, but I still vibe with it. Didn't really knew about Burke apart from some individual songs.
Nice voice and pleasant enough. Probably not something I'd revisit though
day 20 of not rolling Aja by Steely Dan on a completely unrelated note, it is difficult to recall, but I *think* that Aja is the favorite (perhaps one of the favorites) album of our dear dear friend Mason Lilly anyway, this. i kept wanting to like it more, but in the end a lot of it just sounds like Sam Cooke but not nearly as good. the 60s was a little oversaturated with soul albums like these, so it's hard to stand out when your competition is pretty fierce.
Pretty cool, nothing stood out after I was finished though
Fun!
It’s alright. Nobody could be offended by this style of music, but I think that makes this early ‘60s style of soul a bit dull myself (beyond the classics). I think there’s enough quality for 3 though.
Peaks on track one but I thought it was solid on the whole and well performed
Lovely stuff, albeit some suss lyrics. RYM: N Saved a song: N
I really enjoyed this. Perfect music for when the weather gets cold and you need to romanticize indoor time and hours spent meal prepping. 5/5.
It’s a decent background listen but not my thing beyond that
No bad
This guy seems talented. I don't think this album shines as much as similar albums on this list. Feels like it's stuck in the 50s in a way.
This guy has an outstanding voice, and the instrumentation is pretty good as well. Unfortunately, this album all kind of blends together with no variety. Favorite Track: Cry to Me
Didn't listen to the full album, but I liked what K heard. He blends so many different styles and influences, and does a great job!
I got an education today. Hearing this album released in 1964, it's so obvious how it built on the rock and roll that came before and helped shape the soul music that came after. His voice and timbre are great, the songs are sweet, but a little repetitive in nature even as the style changes. The songs don't cohere like albums produced a little later in the 60s will begin to do. Not his fault, that was just the way of making albums then, but the overall album suffers a bit as a result. I'm really glad to learn about this singer and his music. I liked it as a three-star, but am giving it 4 because of its relevance and because I want to remember it later, which I probably won't for most LPs I give 3 stars.
Está mejor que los anteriores
I’m sure Solomon was a super talent but was eclipsed by the likes of Sam Cooke Otis Redding Wilson Pickett etc and somehow never made it like they did - like the Sylvers - big singing family 10kids but the Jacksons already had that market tucked in their pockets This album started out good but starts to ‘all sound the same’ already at track 3
Great voice - well presented. Serviceable songs.
Okay
Solomon sing me your songs filled with love, loss, lust, and yearning. I will listen with reverent joy.
It’s a nice album to come round to, Solomon Burke has a fantastic voice, it’s just one of those things where I think the arrangements and writing are a bit of a snooze to me and hold back some of the energy and power that’s obviously there. I know that’s nothing new to this era of soul, but it does get me every time.
mid jazz
Tom once gave me a copy of a much later Solomon Burke album that I liked way more than this one. This album has very dated lyrics of prowling, needy men. Boo hoo, nope.
Nice voice, pleasant enough album.
Levy oli miellyttävää ja mukavaa kuunneltavaa. Solomonin tulkinta ja ääni oli todella hyviä.
Fun listen!
The atmosphere was quite nice, but it fell just short of a 4-point rating because something was slightly lacking.
Such a powerful voice. Stars for historical impact, especially when you read the Wikipedia article.
this guy was *almost* Prince levels of horny
Enjoyed it, easy listening. Maybe I'm an old soul
First Listen; 3.5; Enjoyable mix of soul, doo-wop, rock music. It's a good thing that there's some diversity in the music, because all the songs are about love, and in particular unrequited and lost love. I also think the music strikes a nice balance between powerful and easy listening. Not going to put me to sleep, but also not running at 100. Favorite Track: If You Need Me
Classic. There are no other word.
I motsatt retning har særlig «You Can't Love 'Em All» for mye gammel TV-vignett over seg.
Solomon Burke - Rock ’n Soul Kjekt at denne plata dukka opp. 8/10
Sound: Warm, majestic Lyrics: Passionate, yearning Highs: "Cry to Me," "If You Need Me," "You Can't Love 'Em All" Lows: None; he sells every track with full conviction
Would listen again.
Super nice album, thoroughly enjoyed it. Soulful voice with heartfelt lyrics. Cry to me is just fantastic, no notes. Favourites: Cry To Me If You Need Me You're Good For Me
Liked this one!
A few bangers, but overall not a great lp. 3/5.
I like this more than the Ray Charles album I just listened to, so four stars.
ça va en vrais, c'est de la musique chill mais nothing to go crazy about
I solve Solomon’s voice, the opening song is great and the mostly sparse production sounds like you’re in the room. There is however an overuse of the massed, close harmony, female backing vocals that are just too much. It was fashionable at the time, but it’s not for me!
It's fine
This is amazing. One of those desert island discs you could listen to over and over without getting sick of it. It covers every mood. I love every bit of it. I wrote this 3 tracks in and I'm confident I won't change my mind after listening to the whole thing. Okay nevermind. It gets a little same-y and the lyrics get questionable even for old songs. Docked a star.
Day 415 Highlights Just out of reach Can’t nobody love you
It does what it says on the tin!
Review - not bad. Hadn't heard this guy before when I probably should've. Good early soul. Not as good as his more famous contemporaries but still worth a listen. Score - 5.5/10 Need to listen? YES
I like the upbeat songs but some were slow and dragged.
Burke has a glorious baritone voice. By turns controlled, then exploding, bursting in despair; rich, then shaky. Lyrically, the album is squarely focused on love's despair - the despair when love is going well, and when love is over. Musically, the drums and piano plonk in compound time, the connecting tissue to squelchy guitar, horn parps, and a thick, billowy cloud of backing vocals.
This was interesting! I would definitely listen to it again at some point in the future to fully form thoughts on it as all songs just kind of sounded the same. I didn't love it but I also did not hate it. I understand how this may have been an early variation of R&B and also how this translates into rock and more soulful music. Burke's voice was actually really nice and powerful. I didn't note down any songs that I considered to be a stand out however there definitely were a few!
“Cry To Me” being about a man crying on another man’s shoulder would feel progressive and surparising to me today, much less being from 60 years ago.
Solomon has an amazing voice. His vocal performance feels powerful, majestic like a lion's roar. His voice is center stage in this album and that for good reason, as he carries most of the songs by himself. Overall this album oozes vintage charm and is a nice listen. The songwriting is a double faced sword. The easy to understand and campy lyrics are essential to the overall vibe of the album. However, I think the songwriting does not work with the overall concept of the album, which is love. The lyrics depict love in a very naive and over romanticized way - which would be fine if the tracklist had one or two songs with this subject matter. But, since ALL the songs are love songs and love is depicted in this overromantized way, the overall depiction feels shallow, inauthentic, almost tacky. I also had some problems with the flow of songs. Most of the songs had very little build up, or release: It was mostly Solomon roaring with his lions voice from the get to, while the band miyandered around one or two musical ideas. A couple of the tracks just ended completely random with a volume fade. For a couple of tracks that happened when Solomon sang at his highest intensity, leaving me puzzled. Overall, it is "nice" music as long as you don't think too hard about the lyrics, or want more than an amazing vocal performance. I feel a light to decent 2 for this one.
I know that this is quite an old album, but it was actually quite chill leaving it in the background while I was working. Overall, it was alright, although it had a little bit of that old vibe and yet, I would say that it's better than some other stuff that I've listened to on here that was released this millennium.
It was alright. Didn't hit me very hard but I enjoyed what I heard.
Nice, solid classic soul record
Kink auf Rock 'N Soul.
a chill listen
Nah man, this cheesy slow tempo stuff I way too dull.
Goodbye Baby - classic. Already can tell this is early rock and roll and much more my wheel house. Some great crooning , some great love songs. Could have been a little more Rock to the Soul, but overall classic and wonderful record.
Nice album and actually full of classics!
Ok
Perfectly fine but a bit boring and not very memorable.
Han har en otrolig röst. Blandar gospel soul och rock. Låter ibland som en preacher!? Hard, Ain't It Hard och Cry To Me bäst. Men det mesta är bra.
- Nothing here sounds all that revolutionary (though this style would have been newish at the time), but it is also insanely competent. Burke can sing and carries a lot of gravitas with his stylings. - Enjoyed "Cry to Me" and "Can't Nobody Love You" the most. The focus on the guitar on the latter feels unique. - A+ album title.
DUUUDE TWO BACK TO BACK MY SOUND MY SOUND MY SOUND AAHAHAHAAAAA WOOOOOOOOOOOO good grief its like pure joy being blasted directly into my veins
I really enjoyed this album. Not as much as early Aretha, but this great
Exactly what it says on the tin. Excellent.
Great vibes, solid album to sing along to while making some dinner
I wanted to like this moreeeeee.
Classic and perfect
Great album of soulful crooning.
not my usual listen but still pleasant
Probably he would have blown the socks off the teenage girls when he was in his prime, but he sounds pretty dated all these years later.
