Two of the best music genres!

Just a fun album and I love Solomon Burke’s voice

Finally, some decent fucking music.

Love this album

Great guy, much soul and fun.

Yeah of course I like this it's soul rock this is so good. Oh yeah this is so good. This is definitely it. Really rocking with this. His voice is so good.its very dynamic, I'm really enjoying this. And it's short thank god. I love good short albums. Favourite: Cry to Me Least favourite: Won't You Give Him (One More Chance)

great stuff

Hell yeah! R&R R&B at it's best !

“If You Need Me” ya es un clásico, pero no olvidemos temas como “Cry To Me” o “Won’t You Give Him (One More Chance)”. Imprescindible.

Helt perfekt.

lots of soul

Excellent album. So good, I listened to it twice!

Loved his style and especially his voice!

Fantastic!

Between him, Sam Cooke and all the other talented soul musicians of the 50s/60s, this is my favorite era of music. Hearing cry to me for the first time as a teenager in a movie soundtrack changed my brain chemistry. Shout out to the king of rock ‘n’ soul for making a little bit of magic.

This blues made me happy.

love it from the first song

genuinely all hits, no misses

One of my favourite musical memories was my first time in New Orleans around 2010, wandering around the French Quarter popping into bar after bar and sampling the smorgasbord of great music available. If we had have come upon Solomon Burke playing a little club on Frenchman Street we probably would have stopped right there and settled in for the entire set. Sixty years after it was made this album still sounds fresh.

It’s great music. Would be a shame to die without having heard it.

cry to me - 7/10 Just out of reach (of my two empty arms) - 8/10 goodbye baby (baby goodbye) - 6.5/10 if you need me - 5.5/10 can’t nobody love you - 7/10 someone to love - 6.4/10 your good for me - 7/10 won’t you give him (one more chance) - 6/10 hard, ain’t it hard - 5/10 you can’t love em all - 6.5/10 beautiful brown eyes - 8/10 he’ll have to go - 7.5/10 this album was an incredible eye opening piece of art. i wasn’t aware of “rock n soul” genre until now and i love it! the musical dynamic and jazz like features make the album flow smoothly and show the blue prints of rock n soul. solomon burkes gospel vocals give such great powerful vocals and uses a distinctive growl that i absolutely love. overall album rating: 7.2/10

Great album Favourite song - Can’t nobody love you 10/10

This album is brilliant. Loved it.

I'm a sucker for this. I can put it on and just feel good. I don't know if it's technically perfect music or if it's just filler - I don't think I even care. I feel good and that's all that matters.

hell yeah brother

Loved this one.

Heerlijk album

Good old music, with organ, bass, and I hear tambourine. A little jazzy.

Shit rocked. Had me vibin the whole time

I really liked this album it was probably my fav so far I really loved it

I've liked this album a lot. It's so enjoyable and addictive. The songs are pretty good, all of them, and, even if there is not much variety, what is there is fantastic. So, for me, it's a solid nine.

the vocals on this album are so good i keep coming back to it already, definitely an album im happy to have been introduced to top 3: - cry to me - just out of reach (of my two empty arms) - he’ll have to go

AMAZINGGGG

Can´t no body love you es una joya. You Can't Love Them All es otra gema, una más. Cierra He´ll have to go, un broche maravilloso para un disco imprescindible.

Oh yeah, rly nice

No nyt. Todella kovaa ajoa.

Very enjoyable classic soul. This is definitely an album I want to listen to again.

This exemplifies why I love real recordings. All the character. All the vibes.

Classic soul.

This is lovely, I just love that soul.

Loved it. Specially Goodbye Baby

Beautiful music. Just the sort of soul I was hoping we'd get from this list.

Dear lord this is a great album. How did I not find this earlier in life.

Klasse

I feel bad for all the 5 stars I’ve given now, because this was 100% deserving. A great album

This album goes so hard. He’s speaking the truth in every one of those songs. That’s really how he feels.

Beautiful soulful songs with a just as beautiful message. Very easy 5/5

Great album!

I love soul, and I was previously unfamiliar with Solomon Burke! Gorgeous ballads- I especially enjoyed "You're Good for Me".

5/5 - True Classic Rock ... Soulful and smooth - A record with heart and soul. If you like Fats Domino, Sam Cooke, Lionel Richie, The Spinners, etc., this is a record for you.

Impossible not to love it. Great energy, voice, and rhythm

Bro is versatile stylistically speaking

I really liked this. It is soulful and bluesy. It is an album of its time and I won't have it on high rotation but I did like this album. Burke's voice is clear, articulate, and soulful. You can hear what would come after him.

Crazy-good '60s soul here. God damn this rocks!

love wins :-)

Amazing too

Balsam!

Solomon Burkes melodic voice and lyrics kept me enthralled the entire album. I loved it!

Really loved this one!

This is the music I grew up with! I have not heard of Solomon Burke but I enjoyed the songs.

I'll give a 5 to every southern soul album on this list! "Cry to Me" is a classic and my other pick was "Beautiful Brown Eyes," which seems to preview what's to come for a lot of future deep soul ballads. Great listen and glad Burke has an album on this list!

Cool soul!

no man with a voice this sultry should be threatening to touch me

Fantastic...what a voice

Excellent. Love the first track but didn’t know who sang it. Rock ‘n soul is a perfect album title. He does early rock and roll, doo wop, and early soul with a masterful touch. Will listen again!

Solid! Especially if you're into old rock and roll music. Had no problem listening to it. I love old school music thanks to my grandparents.

Definitive ‘60’s soul. A bit darker lyrically than most of his peers in that era, but still quite beautiful. Easy five stars.

Great voice, massive appearance

Gorgeous, great diy music as it happens! But who hurt this man

Good! Historic R&B

Silky, soulful and rockin. Timeless.

I've heard a few of these songs before, but I loved listening to the entire album. The album was really short, only 34 minutes!

Listening to this album was a treat for the ears. Solomons range with his voice kept me hooked and I favorited a majority of this album.

I think this is one of the greatest albums ever made. Yeah that's about it.

Pretty relaxing voice and in general music. 9.5/10

What a find - I've heard of him before but never actually ventured into his work. I absolutely loved it, it's so colourful and full of soul, very lively while feeling honest, not a fabrication. Really enjoyable stuff

Knew I'd love it from the first "goodbyeee" on track one. Feels like I've stumbled on the best hidden gem, and it's easily now one of my favourite albums

Fantastic

I already knew 'Cry to Me' and 'If You Need Me' so I expected to enjoy this one. Delightful!

Underrated gem, another solid 4.5

An unexpectedly enjoyable album. Pretty cool from beginning to end. The instrumentation on You Can't Love Em All was particularly enjoyable.

Favorite Track: Goodbye Baby

This one took me by surprise. Every song is just excellent.

this is one of my favorite genres of music.

Love that this song showed up in the man from uncle movie.

Loved this album. Will definitely listen to more of his stuff.

magnificent, soul infused with gospel, and the best songs also have a country flavour

This was a fantastic album, loved it from start to finish.

Ok this was awesome and don’t come at me w the Marvin Gaye rating! Cry to Me is one of my favorite songs of all time (thanks, Dirty Dancing) and He’ll Have to Go is an absolute anthem- although Jim Reeves nailed it harder? Lol is that how you say it? Still

Really liked this

Solomon rest his soul is flat out amazing.

Beautiful example of soul, and an incredible voice from Solomon Burke. Every song is good here.

*carlton dancing gif*

general: this album feels like falling in love with someone, spending the rest of your lives together, and now ur 80yrs old & slow dancing with them in ur living room literally added every song to my 50s playlist top 3: cant nobody love you if you need me beautiful brown eyes

A very soulful voice worthy of a 5:)

Fantastic album. Hadn’t heard this before

Wow! I feel quite ashamed I didn’t know Solomon Burke and interestingly I read online he has been described as ‘soul’s most unfairly overlooked singer’. Well I’m glad I know him now because this was awesome. Obviously akin to many of my favourites like Redding and Brown. Fun and passionate, my top tracks were probably Cry to Me and Goodbye Baby.

First listen

Nice, nice, nicer than nice. Love it.

This guy has powerful voice and deep emotional vibe. His ability to convey raw emotion and vulnerability through powerful storytelling solidified his legacy as one of soul music's greatest icons.

I LOVE old school rhythm and blues. So much soul and passion. I love that the vocals are soft and smooth, yet gritty and powerful. The background harmonies are great. Catchy guitar riffs.

Very good, soulful, and energetic at times. Rock 'N Soul is a good name for the album. Likes: Cry to Me, If You Need Me, Can't Nobody Love You, You're Good for Me

Yes!! This is exactly my type of oldies for a Monday morning. :)

bluesy goodness

A great soul album fr its era.really nice melodies and singing.

Deep soulful romance. Really enjoyed this. Such talent. This is what all those white hippies thought they sounded like.

Beautifully sung album that puts you in good mood. Set nicely with the backing singers to give a pure soul.

Canción favorita: Won't You Give Him (One More Chance) Rating: 9.5

This was smooth af! 4.5.

Not my usual cup of tea but really loved it

Pre-listening thoughts: girl idk this man or what this is gonna be. 60s rock and soul is usually a mixed bag - sometimes it’s super generic and formulaic but sometimes it’s really something special. Post/during listening thoughts: Dude this is amazing. I am really enjoying this album. Like Cry To Me really just got me hook, line, and sinker and now I am so IN this thing. While sometimes it is a little formulaic, I don’t think it’s distracting or repetitive at all. Solomon Burke has a fantastic voice. I think this challenge has really exposed me to the fact that I enjoy soul music. And this is a fantastic example. 9/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: maybe? Yeah? Fav tracks: I mean this is a no skip album but Cry To Me, If You Need Me, You’re Good For Me, Won’t You Give Him (One More Chance), Hard Ain’t it Hard, and You Can’t Love Em All were my absolute favs Least fav tracks: none

Fantastic, I can put this on at any time and just listen.

# Playlist Track - Can't Nobody Love You # Notes - This is one of those albums that you really need to frame in historical context to appreciate. Just listening to it, I thought "Oh well. Cool Album, the end.". Turns out this came out in 1964! - Solomon was one the people that carved the sound that would define soul music later. And he sounds great while at it. - Definitely recommend!

What a great and versatile singer! I didn’t know any of the tunes other than Cry to Me but this whole album is good. There’s some nice guitar playing too.

Never heard this before but just immaculate vibes. Great singing and playing

So incredible

I didn't know who Solomon Burke was until this album was generated, but now I'm glad it did! I'm big on rock and big on soul, so what more could I ask for?

What a treasure. Felt like I was transported back in time. I read he was the most unfairly overlooked singer of soul music...compared to James Brown, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett. So far this is the most memorable album we've had of the great soul singers from the 60s. Glad to see he's in the rock hall where he belongs

Feels like a got a little soul back

This was awesome. I love oldies and this really delivers the soul and great musicianship that I love to hear. Burke has a great voice and great instincts for where to take a melody, and the arrangements were delightful and fun to listen to. I loved it and hummed along to the whole thing. Five stars.

Great oldies. Still holds up.

This is a near-perfect album of early 60s soul. I don't know why I've never heard of Solomon Burke before. It's kinda criminal. That guy's voice was amazing. 5 stars.

This is a good album. First time listener as well. One musical wave of enjoyment .

Excellent soul album. The sound and feeling from the songs are pure soul. Some times in life you just want to listen to some songs like these and do nothing for an hour or five. And right now I just wanna lay back in my sofa, close my eyes and listen to Solomon Burke all day.

Sounds like what my grandmother would listen to? Amazing give me 14 more of them.

Quite good

Sounds good.

Any fan of early soul and vocal R&B (Percy Sledge, Otis Redding, The Impressions, Wilson Pickett, Etta James, etc.) probably already knows Solomon Burke's music, and if you don't, you should. Ten times more interesting than Fats Domino and 100 times more authentic than Elvis just on the sheer range and expression of his voice.

What a beautiful album! Loved his voice and the songs 5 ⭐️

I love the early Solomon Burke sides. His mix of deep soul, pop, blues and country is completely unique and this album is a perfect starting point for those looking to dive in.

“I’m coming to your party / And I won’t be able to stay / But I’m gonna kiss you one more time / Then I going away” Terrific soul. So much emotion in Burke’s singing, some great female backup singers too. There’s often pain in love and Burke reminds us of this in just about every song here.

Funky start then mellows out a bit to some cull vibes

I like this, we need to make more music like this

Oh yes! Brother Solomon Burke. The Bishop! The King of Soul! I loved this guy. He was overshadowed in his day by the likes of Ray Charles, Aretha and James Brown, but he sure had a God given voice and was a real character, on-stage and off. I'm throwing my first 5 stars, a royal flush!

soul, great album

Perfect album in preparing an evening dinner. Soooo romantic.

Very nice.

Nostalgia hitting hard

Riiight into the regular rotation. Also a reminder to always read the Wikipedia. Interesting that he had 21 kids and then one of his grandkids went on to write music for the soundtrack of the movie 21. Well not interesting, but two things.

5/5 Solomon's powerful voice penetrates simple love songs for a great set of tracks. The backing vocals are so on point and the instrumentals are full of life and soul on a remarkably consistent tracklist, which manages to continue feeling fresh as it progresses. Cry to Me 4/5 Just Out of Reach (Of My Two Empty Arms) 5/5 Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye) 5/5 If You Need Me 4/5 Can't Nobody Love You 4.5/5 Someone to Love Me 4/5 (LEAST FAV) You're Good for Me 5/5 Won't You Give Him (One More Chance) 4.5/5 Hard, Ain't It Hard 4.5/5 You Can't Love 'Em All 4.5/5 Beautiful Brown Eyes 5/5 He'll Have to Go 5/5 (FAV)

An awesome listening experience. Great energy and definitely my favorite since Rio.

Cry to Me is one of my favorite soul songs ever, this was my favorite record so far

Really enjoyed this!

Ooo now here is a soulful voice for the ages! I first became familiar with Solomon Burke because of the Dirty Dancing soundtrack that I listened to endlessly in my pre-teen silly dilly dally girl days. And his emotive delivery of every note instantly captured my attention. I love his music, it is classic and classy, there's so much old world charm here. I adore him, this is a wonderful album for showcasing his artistry.

I am very excited about this one I love Solomon’s voice. “Cry to Me” is so iconic I can’t imagine it not existing… imagine it’s 1964 and you hear this for the first time ever. Also I think “Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye)” has a melody that sounds really familiar… I gotta figure that out. “Can’t nobody love you” is just one of my favorite songs ever. The instrumentation is “you can’t love me all” is awesome.. go horns go! This album is just great. The easiest 5/5.

The background singers! Also, wish I lost my virginity to this album.

Loved this entire album!

If there were a college class, Soul 101, this would be essential listening.

Absolutely loved this album. Never listened to it before but had it on repeat.

superb.

Again a great album by the great, late Solomon Burke!

i have listened to this back to back all day. i love it.

"Rock 'N Soul" by Solomon Burke is a timeless masterpiece that effortlessly blends the gritty essence of rock with the soulful depths of rhythm and blues. From the moment the first track kicks in, Burke's commanding voice takes center stage, captivating listeners with its raw power and emotional resonance. Each song on the album is a testament to Burke's unparalleled talent as both a vocalist and a storyteller. Whether he's belting out heart-wrenching ballads or infusing upbeat rhythms with infectious energy, Burke's performance never fails to leave a lasting impression. Tracks like "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" and "Cry to Me" showcase his ability to evoke a wide range of emotions, while the driving force of the music keeps listeners hooked from start to finish. The production quality of "Rock 'N Soul" is also top-notch, with rich instrumentation and tight arrangements that complement Burke's vocals perfectly. The album's seamless fusion of rock and soul elements creates a sound that feels both classic and contemporary, ensuring its appeal to audiences of all generations. Overall, "Rock 'N Soul" is a must-listen for anyone who appreciates soulful music with a rock edge. Solomon Burke's unparalleled talent shines through in every note, making this album a true gem in the world of music.

Sounds like Elvis, but better

Love me some soul

Dude can wail

I'm a sucker for this style of old soul. Reminds me of Sam Cook. And I love Sam Cook. Love this guy's singing style. I saw in his bio that inspired the Rolling Stones singer.

It is sad we don't hear more of Solomon Burke. He puts all the soul into Rock N' Soul with his powerful POWERFUL vocal performance. Shaping RnB and Soul music for years to come, with a classic old style rock and roll sound on this album

I love old people music. It never fails to make me FEEL something. So smooth, bluesy, and soulful - exquisite stuff!

Beautiful soul music with gorgeous arrangements and background vocals, and Burke’s performances are great (though not quite as raw and emotional as someone like Otis Redding). Really enjoyed this! 4.5 leaning 5.

Fun and easy!

Cry To Me - a classic! Makes me think of that scene from Dirty Dancing. Great album - easy, cozy listening. Perfect for a slow, sunny Saturday morning. Guy sure does love to shout, though.

Great bit of classic soul, rock and roll and blues. Fantastic voice - smooth and silky... Must get on vinyl for the collection...

Distinct soul album with wonderful arrangements.

Loved it!

Great stuff!

Wow. I had not heard this incredible album before. Thank you! I love this so much.

aw cute. 3 OHHHHHH THIS IS THE GUY WHO SINGS CRY TO ME I KNOW THAT SONG really good so far bumped up to 4.8 like the sugar is good for the teeth,,ure good for me,,lol

I mean some of the lyrics reflect the more misogynistic views of the time…but I love oldies like this in general.

Gotta love when a new (to me) album kicks off with an iconic Dirty Dancing ditty. This album is packed with soul, and apparently a lot of relationship drama. I think every one of these is about breaking up, hooking up, or someone he’s in love with. In addition to his musical genius, he had 21 kids, four wives, and countless lovers, so that tracks. Lots of inspiration for song writing no doubt. You can’t love ‘em all…or CAN you? He sure can try. Totally dig his voice and his vibe. Great listen!

Soul and a little bit of rock. Some of the best music you can make

Burke is the real deal. Can’t go wrong!

Loved it

Great voice, some really wonderful tunes, I'm not sure how this guy didn't really make it on my radar. Contemporaries of Sam Cooke and Ray Charles I guess, as he referenced them on "Can't Nobody Love You" but doesn't seem to have the same recognition. That should change.

Enjoyed

Something utterly soul enriching about that mono sound. just glorious

Love this doo wop style record, there’s so many layers beyond the doo wop style though. Great stuff.

This kicked major ass. Joyful, soulful, each track a new delight. I was planning to give it four stars, but why not give it five? It's excellent. I'd happily listen again.

Soulful. Good vibes. Good music

I'm in love with this album, this is exactly the type of music I thought would be on the list. The vocals are astounding and moving. Adding back up singers to each song is such a nice touch and really stands out. The title of the album is spot on, it's rock n roll, it's soulful and its beautiful.

Man, the way some of these lines are delivered... "I gave you candy, and you fed me dirt..." You can practically feel the poor guy's pain (and hear his influence on so many people that came afterwards).

Begins with dirty dancing song??? Definitely a fave!

Excellent to listen to with a great soulful voice and lyrics that reach your heart

Amazing! Cry to Me!

Motown brilliance

Absolutely loved this album. Played it on repeat immediately.

This album is great! You can really hear the emotion in Burke’s performances.

Soulful classics

RnB at it's finest, rock fusion, great album

Goodbye baby

dug it

November 27, 2023 Legend. Incredible voice. Great listen start to finish.

was es schöns album, ich han nid gwüsst dass cry on me vo ihm isch

YES! Love this. Gives that Sam Cooke feels in all the best ways. Big fan.

Classic.

Lovely and soothing.

Best yet

This was a truly lovely listen; absolutely adding it to my rotation and am really glad this app connected me with it. 5/5

im into it

I love 60s vocal harmonies. His voice is incredible

Badass early soul

classic!!!

60s soul is not my wheelhouse. It tends to be too soft. No backbone, you know? But that couldn't be further from the truth here. Solomon brings the fire on "Rock 'N Soul" like nobody before or after. There's an undeniable energy here that's lacking from most soul music. There's a heavy dose of rock in "Rock 'N Soul" but it never overwhelms the soul portion. Perfectly balanced. These performances are just spectacular. Burke's voice is so powerful but under perfect control. He's pure talent and emotion. The only other soul artist that I've ever heard who's on this level is the legendary Aretha Franklin. And the band isn't slacking here either. They understood the assignment. Everyone's pulling their weight and working towards the same goal. It's just... really impressive. Started strong and just kept getting better, earning every bit of a 5-star review by the end.

beautiful

He’s no Otis but solid listened 2x before I realized it repeated

Didn't get a chance to listen to this on Friday. So listening now. oooooh I like it! I this guys voice. And the style is just so soul! I love it! Had to play If You Need Me a couple times. Make that 3 times. I'm going to add that to my karaoke list. In fact I should expand my voice styles. I'll be looking into doing more mo town type songs. This was a great album!!

Great Soul Album, 5/5

Soul power is the cleanest energy source and may just save the human race

Straight ahead soul with nothing to complain about.

pure, undiluted soul. solomon has such an incredible voice.

A very enjoyable album. It made for good background music as well as music to unwind after a long day. I particularly liked Cry For Me and Won't You Give Him (One More Chance).

What this list was made for. A hidden gem. Underappreciated, phenom of a voice. I loved it.

Amazing. Sounds like Otis Redding with the intensity turned down 15%.

Saw Solomon Burke once in Newcastle just before he passed away later that year on a flight to Amsterdam. This album is from 1964. I did not know it but recognized half of the songs. The other tracks were generally great as well.

Fantastic album.

Sjukt bra!! Paolo Nutini må være kraftig inspirert avvente her, både mht arrangementer og stemmebruk. Formidling og rop er helt like.

Me ha encantado. No conocía ninguna canción. Una voz muy bonita. Y emociona su interpretación.

They don't make them like they used to.

Soulful and awesome.

Boy this is the real thing. Such a voice. He used to be one of my mum's favourites and I can see why. Love it.

A true classic. I enjoyed this one.

This rocks. Love the constraints imposed by the physical length of a single album platter. So much soul jammed into 2 and a half minutes many times over.

Superb collection of music.

This was my introduction to Solomon Burke, and holy crap, I wish it'd come much sooner. This was fantastic.

Amazing voice. The music is so alive. I haven't listened to Burke before but he's going on the list with Aretha and Sam and Otis. I look forward to digging deeper into his catalog.

Fantastic

Bluesy and smooth

So great. So influential. Love stuff like this.

amazing. beginning to end amazing. favorite: cry to me

More of this please

excelente gracias 1001 por ofrecerme esta joyita

The early 60’s was an interesting time in rock music. It was the ending of music driven by the Silent Generation throughout the ’50s and the beginning of music driven by the Baby Boomers. The release of the album is the capstone of the previous era just as the Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, and others were forging the sounds of the next generation. As the capstone, this represents the best of the soul sounds from the’50s. While soul would continue on. It would also be forged by new artists. I’m deviating from my scale. This isn’t an absolute favorite, but due to the quality and significance, it earns a 5. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - It was ok to listen to it but wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.

powerhouse album

Good music and lyrics.

Loved it - knew the first song as a classic and the rest were just as good. Had a grin on my face the whole time I was on the bus and i could just imagine it as background music or singing & dancing to it

Solomon Burke is timeless. His voice is addictive.

A really great soul album. BARELY above a 9/10. Nothing else to say. 5 stars.

New to me. Classic soul 1.0

Loved it!

Stunning

Where has this guy been my whole life! Great record.

Damn how did I miss this one!

Great, love the voices!

Wow what a voice! And a great vibe!

wow, genieten

Yeah, this is fucking great.

I really really liked this album. Some of my favorites: If You Need Me Won't You Give Him (One More Chance) Hard, Ain't It Hard I liked the production a lot. I don't listen to basically anything pre mid-60s, and I like how the guitar was panned all the way to one channel with other instruments sometimes solitary in a channel and sometimes mixed stereo. It felt like the guitar was next to me and not "around me" like I'm used to. I listened through it twice and want to listen again. 5/5

Great Album, Kamalt Ktebt El Hadra 4 M 3l Bouheli Mte3 Dostoevsky. I Feel Better

Sehr nice!

Very smooth sounding. Enjoyed listening.

Good variety! I liked this one a lot

Me ha encantado. No conocía ninguna canción. Una voz muy bonita. Y emociona su interpretación.

Pleasantly surprised. Dusty Gr00ves

What an absolute gem. His voice has the power of Sam Cooke and Otis Redding. The songs are irrisistable.

Everything you want from a rock and roll album.

If you want that album that stokes that fire of romantic angst, the kind that endears you to the lady who chose you but took her sweet time doing so, then this album is for you. If you want that album that provokes that romantic angst whilst in pursuit of the lady you love, but things haven't developed as you hoped they would, and you don't know why but are insistent they should, then this album is for you, but you might also want to think about moving on. If you want that album that reminds you of how decisive and successful you were in landing the woman of your dreams, then this is the album for you. If you are at a 50s and 60s diner and there's a jukebox, then this album is for you. If you want to relive the late night informercials of those classic love songs of the 60s, then this album is for you. Solomon Burke has the incredible voice of a crooner, with gospel fervor. The album is aptly titled 'Rock 'n Soul' as the vocals and lyrics are very much what we would expect from soul, but the music while not quite less 'soul' seemed more inclusive of 'rock'. This listener knows a lot of little things from this era of music, mostly from movies and pop culture, and the experience with 'Rock 'N Soul' is an educational one. Solomon Burke is just too good at this music, and after further research, it becomes clear why. He's part of, if not the baseline for this genre. We could with valid criticism call everyone else imitators, and lament that Solomon Burke wasn't more popular as some of his contemporaries. "Rock 'N Soul" by Solomon Burke gets a 5/5 for this very reason. We can listen to Elvis, The Righteous Brothers, even James Brown, but this album is a ground zero for those talents. Where this album might lack in experimentalism and variety that appeals to the 21st century listener, this album does something even more valuable --- it defines where our music can go from here.

that album was amazing 10/10 I like Fats Domino more but this album is still great

Loved it!! Beautiful R&B album. Never listened to this geezer before, so I'll definitely check out more of his craft.

mmmm very rock and soul passed by quick, there wasnt any one song i felt i wanted to skip. it was all very stimulating to my ears 5/5 maybe??

What a fantastic album. Loved it

Voor mij zijn er echter betere nummers op andere albums, zoals "I Wish I Knew (How It Would Feel To Be Free)" #kippenvel en "What A Woman" dat dus gewoon een verbeterde versie van het Nederlandstalige nummer is.

una joyita

Great vintage soul.

Great album!

Light rock for some songs, soul vibes for others. Late night listen for sure.

Great Rock n' Soul Album!

So soulful. Great gem.

It was alright! Good jazz album but not something I'd go out of my way to listen to again

this is exactly how I feel "From purely a listening standpoint this album is a real joy. Burke's voice is clear, articulate, and soulful. If you're a fan of R&B or soul this album is probably already at the top of your list. Adding in the historical context, that Burke was one of the founding fathers of soul, makes this album even more impressive as you realize that he was forging a new sound" 3.5

This was really good.

I had never heard of Solomon Burke before today and that’s absolutely wild to me. This album was fantastic and I think he deserves to be more well known.

Liked the sound overall. Liked If You Need Me the best.

Rate: 8.5/10.

I liked it quite a bit. I can see why Sam & Dave, among others, got more fame, but this was still a good listen. My wife really liked it a lot. I could have used a bit more variety, but he has a great voice.

Classic soul and definitely worth more than one listen

Hadn't heard this before but really enjoyed it. Until I did a little research, I didn't realize how popular he was in the 60s. He continued performing until his death in 2002, so I'm surprised I hadn't come across him sooner. This is some of the best traditional soul, R&B, and blues I've heard. Glad he made the list. Fun fact: at the time of his death at age 70 , he had 90 grandchildren. Woah.

What a voice!

Good "Rock and Blues" by one of the early founders of the genre (Soul). And quite the character: showman, salesman, first child at 14, 4 wives, 21 children 350+ pounds. He seems to have really enjoyed life!

Cry to me is such a bop. I don't think I liked any of the other songs quite as much but I do really love 60s soul so I enjoyed this album a lot

Incredible voice. The songs aren’t that distinctive or memorable which I suppose is why he didn’t have that many hits and so has been under celebrated.
