Sabotage aside easily the less of the two other Beastie Boys albums on this list
Enjoyed this but thought it was quite front loaded. Cecilia was the best track IMO
A 4.7 but let’s be generous. Riffs for days and really liked Layne’s pained vocals. Bit of a somewhat overlooked grunge gem
I liked some of the storytelling but the instrumentals felt too samey and bland
Went into this with no knowledge of the artist at all. Enjoyed this, especially when it went full bends era Radiohead on Go or Go Ahead
Front loaded but goes toe to toe with the other big hitter grunge records from that time
Never attached listened to U2 properly just had a lot of questionable feelings about anyone who would call themselves “the edge” but this was a pleasant surprise. Nice post punk twang mixed with more contemporary stadium rock vocals. Favourite track: New Years Day
Really liked the dark vibes, reminded me of the acoustic mid era Swans output
If Dolittle is their Nevermind, this is their bleach
Enjoyable in the background, it’s no Aphex Twin or Boards of Canada but I’d probably put it on again
Really enjoyed this, thom yorke guest vocals a nice touch
Enjoyable but more of a relic of a time before the band started doing more interesting things instrumentally
Incredible production on this
Loved it, especially how forward in the mix the guitars and bass are for a rap album
It’s not bad bad but it’s always in these sorts of lists and I’ve never really got what the hype was
Copying from my other account, this is the best of the three beastie boys accounts on this list, Fight for your right easily being there best song
Enjoyable, feel like I’d actually heard more of this passively before that I thought I had going into it
Some bops on this for sure but didn’t really see the hype for the most part
Some fun moments of glam excess but not really essential listening
Some bangers on here, even the most overplayed song of all time is still quite charming in the context of the full thing
Step down from the walls of sound in the first album and I never need to hear supernova or wonderwall ever again but there’s some bangers on the tracklist
3 Beatle-ish smooth fun. Sunny afternoon and Party lane are complete bangers
Had no context to these guys, enjoyed it! Quite a varied bit of classic rock
Really like the riffs on this one
Never need to hear come on Eileen ever ever again… yet it was cool to hear it in context. His vocals really remind me of Robert Smith. Good pop rock
Yes it’s quite an unoriginal record label reply to the Beatles, nevertheless thought there were some great tunes on this and really liked the drum sound. Great
Strong 3, fell off abit in the middle but enjoyed the vocals and range of themes. Clocking that Cypress Hill had sampled the start of preacher man was abit jarring…
Reviewing from a rammed aircoach in Baltic -2 Dublin which has probably influenced the score abit here but outside of a few stand out tracks “Birmingham Blues, Jungle and Sweet is the night” I found this is pretty tedious, over long and vocally poor. A light 2
Quite unoriginal but not awful, some of the guitar tones were quite nice
These vocals are like chalk and cheese. It worked on the Christmas song. It falls firmly flat on its face here
The guitar tone on this is just gorgeous. Five stars
Very good but I thought I’d like it more than I did. Heroes tops this quite firmly, found the instrumentals quite dull and basic at points. Suffragette City was my favourite track
Instant five no notes, okay some notes: this is easily there most consistently brilliant album, there are moments on the bends and in rainbows that individually top this, and even some of the modern stuff… really love “burn the witch” from moon shaped pool and “spectre” their go at a bond theme… but this is lots of things, but most of all it’s consistent
Some of their best tracks (Norwegian Wood) and the first great album from them
Coldplay are overrated IMHO, this has some total bangers on it
Loved it, big fan of shoegaze and whilst others would go on to top this it was really cool to get around to listening to one of the first albums in the genre
Not awful, awful but tediously long and instrumentally bland. A strong 1 star
I want to keep consistency between my other account so I’ll keep it at a 4.. but it’s really a 4.5, love how whimsical this record is
Some of the most gorgeous vocal performances put to record, such a strong album
Good chemistry between the drummer and the synths
There isn’t a double album in existence that justifies its length, and this certainly didnt change that
Incredibly dark yet not even in their top two best..
Liked his energy and storytelling
Liked the glampunk instrumentals… lyrically……. Urmm “dated”
It’s no Scott 2 but it’s still pretty bloody great
Enjoyed the storytelling , especially on the second half
Bit over technical for its own good but enjoyed it
Kendrick’s no stranger to incredible output but GKMC is a step above the rest. The consistency of insane production, lyricism and vibes perfect combo with a 100% hit rate roaster of features (yes, even drake) and top tier storytelling. Perfect
I’m very hit or miss with prog. This is a hit
What a Bjanger. Didn’t expected this to be as dance-focused as it was. She really did just start her output as Bjork great and just get greater…
First half of this was decent but not great, everything born to run onwards is top tier stuff though
It’s abit wishy washy at points but the debut Coldplay id call solidly “good”. Trouble being the stand-out track
This took me my surprise, great collection of pop folk with clear and creative lyrics that lean country in a tongue in cheek way. Great album
Too long but love how weird it is
Lackluster, some of the soloing was cool with the first and last track being the highlights… but god do I loathe proud marry as a song
Loved the vibes and lyricism but found the instrumentals quite bland. Gloria was the easy highlight
The back story here is more interesting than the end result but there still ends up being some moments on here. Feels abit proto libertines in its ramshackle-ness
Was very impressed by the range of instrumentation and she’s got a nice voice. The songs are so-so, but I’d call it good overall
Proper yuppie stuff this, reminds me of dead or alive, vocals abit iffy in places but it grew on me as it went on
Watched there glasto set on the bbc and thought it was incredibly boring but the album itself, solidly good stuff, best stuff is the reprisal of stranger ones throughout.
The boss at the height of his powers, the bangers, bang and the whole thing is just very consistently high bar
Strong vocal performance, so so songwriting though some real highlights
Loved it, Bjork’s killer vocals combined really nicely with the more traditional post punk monotone of the male vocalist, the songs were varied and constantly interesting. Great album
Good and solid but I’d always pick mezzanine over this if I wanted to listen to some massive attack
“Dumb” bombastic and overblown yet extremely technical this is a lot of things, but mainly it’s fun
The 3 track that’s elevate this are the obvious stand outs and to be honest that isn’t helped by the track ordering but there’s some hidden gems outside of singles to be enjoyed here too. Pretty great album, would have been an outstanding ep
Enjoyed this, felt a lot like something Neil Young might have recorded around the time he was making Harvest Moon
It’s better than Back in Black but my general thoughts on Winehouse’s music is it’s the equivalent of driving a Ferrari down the road to Tesco. Golden plated vocals without the songs to really back them up as impressive as they are
I didn’t connect with this much to be honest but there were some interesting moments
Floored by this, the creative production, the story telling but most importantly the bangers… outstanding. Lovely stuff
Liked the genre blending but ultimately thought it was too long and did trail off at points, decent
Solid and deeply 90s. Connections is a banger for sure
Scott walker without the edge, that said I did enjoy this a good amount there are some lovely all be it cheesy passages and the instrumentals are sufficiently swiping
Crazy good, it’s an over used term but this is very much lynchian, complete fever dream of an album. All timer
Bit sauceless but well performed
This really took it time with me, had listened a while back and dispute loving loads of the post-hardcore that it went on to influence I just didn’t get it, but as times gone on the vocals have clicked and with that the rest of the pieces of the puzzle fall into place, blissful chaos
Worts and all this feels proper king crimson, there’s some nice ritualistic drone passages, some really interesting solo-ing on the first half but it does feel abit too Moonchild at points and the vocals are weak. Good overall
Some bangers on here for sure, solidly good
Venus in furs aside this didn’t really do loads for me. I appreciate it was very ahead of its time but If this is proto-punk it’s also proto-great songs. Lou reed has his…magic moments… but IMO isn’t this one of them
Had never heard of this but then I read the bloke (who is called start and from reading….) wrote a load of Confessions on the Dancefloor and that made a lot of sense because this is full of BOOPS
Not bad by any means but it makes sense this the last album as a lot of the sparks clearly gone at this point
Has more than just the one ten out of ten banger on it, the self titled Franz Ferdinand is equal parts angular and danceable. Great album
+: The Dark of the Martinee
Very strong, preferred the more experimental second half
Liked the energy on the earlier tracks but really not my thing. Okay for what it was but did feel myself watching the clock
Epic noise, really strong album that ends on a bang
Thought this was super mid, had none of the charm of Face to Face. Very gcse drama vibes to its narrative
It’s considered a classic for a reason. Alt rock cornerstone with strong pop senseabilities . Alanis walked so Paramore, Olivia Rodrigo etc could run. (Think all three are great)
Other than that only other thought is head over feet really *really* sounds like Today by The Smashing Pumpkins
+: Mary Jane
Good fun this, the drum solo at the end goes crazy hard
Abit on the nose a points…? No, it just slaps you in the face and demands your focus. Everyone is on top from here, Zach’s pained screams, Tom’s riff. No skips, total rager, perfect 10
