Album Summary

Boston is the debut studio album by American rock band Boston. Produced by Tom Scholz and John Boylan, it was released on August 25, 1976, by Epic Records. Scholz studied classical piano in his childhood and became involved in the Boston music scene in the late 1960s. He subsequently started to write and record demos in his apartment basement with singer Brad Delp; they had received numerous rejection letters from major record labels in the early 1970s. By 1975, the demo tape had fallen into the hands of CBS-owned Epic Records, who signed them. Epic wanted the band to record in Los Angeles with a record producer, but Scholz was unwilling and wanted to record the album in his basement studio, so he hired Boylan to run interference with the label. In an elaborate ruse, Scholz tricked the label into thinking the band was recording on the West Coast, when in reality, the bulk was being tracked solely by Scholz at his Massachusetts home. The album's contents are a complete recreation of the band's demo tape, and contain songs written and composed many years prior. The album's style, often referred to as the "Boston sound", was developed through Scholz's love of classical music, melodic hooks and guitar-heavy rock groups such as the Kinks and the Yardbirds, as well as a number of analogue electronic effects developed by Scholz in his home studio. Besides Scholz, who played most of the instruments on nearly all of the tracks, and Delp, other musicians appear on the album. Drummer Jim Masdea worked extensively with Scholz during the writing, arranging, and demo process and plays drums on one song on the final album, "Rock & Roll Band". Sib Hashian plays drums on the rest of the tracks. Guitarist Barry Goudreau and bassist Fran Sheehan, who joined the band after most of the tracks had been recorded, contribute some overdubs to "Foreplay/Long Time" and appear in the final track on the album, "Let Me Take You Home Tonight", which was recorded separately from the rest of the album. The album was released by Epic in August 1976 and broke sales records, becoming the best-selling debut LP in the US at the time, and winning the RIAA Century Award as best selling debut album. The album's singles, most notably "More Than a Feeling" and "Long Time", were both AM and FM hits, and nearly the entire album receives constant rotation on classic rock radio. The album has been referred to as a landmark in '70s rock and has been included on many lists of essential albums. It has sold at least 17 million copies in the United States alone and at least 20 million worldwide making it one of the best selling debut albums of all time.

#265/1001 🇺🇸 Boston, by Boston from Boston. I have to admire the ambition of this for a solo record, reading the notes, it's pretty much written in a basement composed by one guy who plays most of the instruments. Glad i heard it, it was great fun but i might not come back round to it again. Best Track: More Than A Feeling.

Great the first time I listened to it in the late 70s, still great now.

Damn fine dad rock. Not a single bad song and I’m pretty sure I’ve heard all eight of the songs on the radio at some point in my life

Geen fan van progrock

This is up with the few albums where every track has been tattooed on my brain since formative years. Deep track (not sure anything on here could be considered a deep track) highlights - Hitch a Ride, Something About You.

Classic. Sometimes blends together.

I've occasionally wondered why I've never heard anything by Boston apart from More Than A Feeling, which is great. Now I know. Everything else was terrible. Rock by numbers with cringe lyrics. AI could probably write this, now.

Excelente disco, suena increible!

i know this is seminal...but it's not for me :)

All American rock…llegue tarde a eso, por suerte

More than a feeling obvs a banger but just 70s rock to my ears

An album full of bangers, basically. Honestly, I was surprised that I knew every single song on this album without ever once having tried to listen to Boston, the album or the band. But every song I enjoyed, nodded along with, and even sang to. Great shit.

is boston really just two guys and some studio musicians? yes. have these songs been getting the shit played out of them on the radio for the last 50 years? also yes. but is basically every one of them an absolute all-time banger? lord yes. 5/5.

A somewhat entertaining, completely harmless, and pretty cheesy rock album. There is exactly one song on this record that everyone should listen to, but of course, everyone has already heard it way too many times

Not on Apple Music. Rating based on other album.

Such a great classic album to rock out to for my Friday! More Than A Feeling is such a strong opener, but Peace of Mind is probably my favorite. Really the whole album is great throughout, all the more impressive after learning Tom Scholz was the mastermind behind the most of it and the unconventional recording process he employed.

Such a great album!

What a hoot! I love classic rock and this scratches an itch. Good playing and sweet harmonies.

It’s fun, slightly schlocky, and filled with great musicianship. No it isn’t massively deep, really it’s pop music dressed in rock clothes, but there is nothing at all wrong with that. I enjoyed the whole thing!

Overall, it slaps! They bring the energy and the songs are interesting. I actually think this would be a fun show.

After that first great song, it just sounds the same for ten or so tracks.

Classic Rock Radio has killed this for me. I never need to hear it again. That aside, it's loaded with guilty pleasure bangers.

9.5 amazing album front to back

Hell yes! Play it on Spotify? Nah, I'll just spin the vinyl version I've had for 50 years. A little warped but it plays pretty good. Oh yeah!! 5.0

Pretty decent 70s rock with an iconic track in More Than a Feeling. Sounds like low calorie Aerosmith, the album breezes by with no real drag but with the exception of the lead single no real highs either just solid if it’s your thing. 3.3

Really like it iverall. More than a feeling is a banger and there are other great tracks. Tails off a bit in the second half. And I have never taken to that classic rock keyboard sound they use in the solos.

Good stuff, but I have to admit I’m a little tired of it by now

Filled with bangers. I would listen to it on repeat, but a solid choice for any road trip

Legendary ofc

Maybe the best 3 songs to open an album ever. The rest is just ok, but damn those first 3 are so good!

I grew up in Southern New England and 2 bands I couldn't escape were Aerosmith and Boston. I feel because of that, I wound up actively disliking Boston. But I moved to NYC when I was 25 and I had some time away from New England radio. With absence and age I changed my opinion and realized that Boston is actually a good band and their debut album is quite amazing. 100% of these songs are radio hits where I come from. The same doesn't hold true for Aerosmith though. Those guys still suck. Seriously, fuck Aerosmith.

lleno de himnos y rock chabon albunazo bandaza aguante boston massachussets

Sooo coool

And another classic AOR album - Boston. Nice to hear, nice production, nice songwrting. Nice is the keyword here.

one of the greatest classic rock (dad rock too) albums ever, still holds up today. shoutout to my dad who loved telling me that he got to play this record when it came out when he was a college DJ. He heard one song, liked it, then ended up just playing the whole record. miss you

Ehh. Peaked with the first song and all kind of blended together.

Banger. One of my first vinyl buys.

Certainly one of the most talked about and praised debut albums of all time. The man behind this monumental debut is Tom Scholz. He recorded a lot of the music himself in his own basement against the will of their label and I think it's safe to say he did a pretty good job. Bostons self titled is considered one of the great classics of the arena and classic rock era. Driven by the mighty guitars in about 100 layers and singable powerful hooks this embodies arena hard rock perfectly. Mixed together with the classic high screams, the vocal harmonies and the ton of solos results in the well known Boston sound. Productionwise Bostons debut still sounds great to this day it just sounds really polished and clean. The coverart is beautiful and it was just this year that my slow brain made the connection that those UFOs are actually upside down guitars. Now it's one of my favourite covers it is perfect. After all the praise is this really my sound and do I listen to this a lot? No definetly not but I can still acknowledge the greatness of a masterpiece and see whats special about it even when it's not exactly my cup of tea. However my score is about how much I like the music not how important or influential an album was even though these can have an effect on the score in some cases. 3,7/5

I can’t say this is actively bad but it does nothing for me. The bluesy parts don’t feel bluesy. The exuberant parts don’t feel exuberant. There’s a song about being a rock and roll band but it doesn’t rock. At all. Then comes “Smokin’” that is actually a little bluesy and kind of rocks and then he sings “Get down tonight! All right!” like he doesn’t even mean it, like it doesn’t mean anything at all to him. “Smokin’! Smokin’! I’m not jokin’!” This has all the trappings of music made by humans for humans, but it lacks any human characteristics. And instead of being just flat, it mimics the signifiers and instrumental effects that other artists use to convey emotion, creating an uncanny animatronic band effect. If I was just rating this on the notes played in tune, reasonably assembled compositions, instrumental skill, I might give it a 2, maybe even a 3 if I was feeling generous, but for the crime of attempting to murder the creative and human aspect of music, I have to give this a 1. Essential listen: no Desert island disc: no

More than a feeling - 5/5 Peace of mind - 5/5 Foreplay/long time - 5/5 Rock & roll band - 4/5 Smokin - 5/5 Hitch a ride - 5/5 Something about you - 4/5 Let me take you home tonight - 4/5

More than a feeling is great. I'm enjoying the bulk of this album quite a bit. Strong guitars, fun beats and vocals

Very dad rock

This band is kind of a one hit wonder, which is a shame because their one hit isn’t even good

Note : 2 sur 5

Yay rock. 2.5

so dorky, just gotta love it

Master peace

Neuentdeckung.

Good overall sound. Really liked the album

How can you not enjoy classic rock with guitar spaceships?

I mean, there are just no misses on this album. It's not typically my style, but I can't deny the talent on display.

Full on and all the better for it, on one track the Hammond organ was going so full tilt that I thought they were going to throw everything in and fully expected bagpipes to make an appearance. As debuts go it's up there.

2 good songs out of 8 other 6 are meh

It's ok. The best moment is an organ solo in Smoking. Besides that, it sounds like a band that tries to be a softer Deep Purple or Van Halen but never finds it's way around. Always liked the cover.

Favorite track(s): More Than a Feeling, Peace of Mind, Foreplay / Long Time, Smokin' Heard before Previous rating: 8/10

Listen, man. I don't give a fuck if it makes me uncool. This album is just packed with hooks, great riffs and guitar harmonies. And organ solos. Don't forget the organ solos.

Kind of boring.

This album is imprinted on my brain and I don’t know why

pretty awesome ngl

The Good: We’re going to have tea! The Bad: Tea’s in the harbor… The Ugly: band and album name is the same… Wow. And here I thought that I only knew More Than A Feeling as a Boston song, turns out I am familiar with every song on this album… If you’re going to have a freshman album, then it might as well be this one. Though, they kind of used up all their creativity as I can’t recall any Boston songs from other albums… Oh well… another great album from the 70s 5*

Ben would use this in a music round.

I enjoyed discovering songs beyond the familiar ones

TL;DR: A mixed bag of classic rock cheese once you get past the sublime More Than A Feeling. BEFORE: I like More Than A Feeling and that is pretty much the full extent of my opinions on the band. I know this album has a strong reputation. AFTER: It's very cheesy but mostly well-executed. Brad Delp had an incredible voice and I really like the guitar work on most of the songs. Some of the songwriting can be forgettable - like music from a Dazed and Confused montage. HIGHLIGHTS: More Than A Feeling is a great song with incredible vocals and fantastic guitar work. It's a classic rock staple for a reason. God help anyone who attempts it at karaoke. Peace of Mind is catchy. The instrumental section of Foreplay / Long Time is pretty cool - energetic and spacy. The song that follows is just OK until you get to the exceptional guitar solo. Hitch A Ride is a solid mid-tempo song elevated by a weird, dreamy chorus. LOWLIGHTS: The lyrics are an endless string of cliches that the music can't always overcome. The guitar solos and screaming falsetto can't save Rock & Roll Band from mediocrity, but at least it's short. Smokin' is a generic boogie although I didn't mind the keys in the middle section. Something About You is forgettable and Let Me Take You Home Tonight is nauseating. VERDICT: 3 stars. It would be 2 if not for More Than A Feeling.

This one takes me back to my earliest days of listening to music. It gets an extra star just for that reason probably even if it isn't the best album and band ever. Ahhh, nostalgia, you make me feel good. :)

Not my kind of guitar solos but better than I thought it would be

Smooth, clean, and timeless.

saw the first track and for some reason my head went to ‘hooked on a feeling’ instead. safe to say very different album, nonetheless was fun.

I went into this thinking Boston are a weird band that Americans seem to think are incredible and English people think have that more than a feeling song. I felt that was unfair so I tried to clear my mind and start from the beginning again with a hope that I was gonna find a great new rock band to like... So track one, which happens to be more than a feeling, this is unbelievably good. Everything about this track is incredible. The parts, the production, the singing, the melody, the solo, the harmonies. Absolutely love it. It's even better when analysing it. Just so good. Then there is the rest of the album, which is forgettable well recorded whatever, who cares music. Don't get me wrong, I tried. I wanted to like it. It sounds great. Some of the parts are interesting, but non of it was good. None of the songs, the vocals seemed a bit naff outside of track 1. There were some guitar arpeggios reminiscent of more than a feeling, but it just reminded me how much better more than feeling is. The rest of the album is a 2 at best. More than feeling is a 5. I suppose I'll give it a 3.

Easy and cheesy

The best thing about this album is the cover. The music is generic 70s arena rock, overblown production with hints of prog. Shit like this is why punk came to be

This is the Mt. Olympus of classic rock. Every song on here is melodic and is filled grand arrangements, roaring guitars, and a voice I wish I could replicate. More Than a Feeling is one of my favorite songs ever. I cant stop myself from cranking it on the car radio when it comes on. Loved it.

Very polished guitar sound. Quite cheesy but in a nice way.

Nothing but hits

Is it perfect in my eyes? probably

One long jam, songs flow into each other. Sleek guitar tone. I like the harmonies. An epitome of classic rock. Last song fade out felt a little unsatisfying lol.

I knew one song

Dad rock - I get it it’s got uplifting vocals and wistful lyrics and the guitar sound is recognizable, probably my favorite part is the guitar. But when you’re songs are about the good old days and how hard touring is you lose me.

More than feeling a 4/5

A strange paradox at the center of this record — the songs come on the radio and land immediately, and then the artist credit registers as a mild surprise every time. Boston built a sound so perfectly calibrated for album-oriented rock radio that it became the radio rather than something on it, which is either the ultimate compliment or the explanation for why the band never quite lodges in memory the way the songs do. Tom Scholz recording most of this in his basement on homemade equipment while working as a product designer at Polaroid is the origin story that makes everything else make sense — an engineer's approach to rock and roll, every guitar layer placed with precision, Brad Delp's soaring tenor sitting over arrangements that are immaculate without ever feeling cold. The guitar tone Scholz developed became one of the most imitated sounds in classic rock, which is its own kind of anonymous immortality. "More Than a Feeling" is the argument — one of the great singles of the era, melodically generous, the kind of song that Kurt Cobain essentially admitted borrowing for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" because the chord progression was too good to leave alone. The rest of the record delivers the same formula with diminishing but still genuine returns. A four that the nostalgia and the craft earn together — a band whose songs are more memorable than the band itself, which is a strange kind of success and an honest one.

Stone-cold classic that I've probably heard front-to-back upwards of 50 times. The DNA that makes this album so amazing are the production and guitar sound (Scholz on both) and the cultivation of a variety of influences (prog, psychedelic rock, southern rock, and hard rock) that all culminate in an evidentiary groundbreaker for the "arena rock" genre. So many fantastic hooks and dual guitar eargasms!

This album has a lot of buzz around it. Definitely, Boston was not thinking of me, a -10 years old guy by then. It’s ok. I can have fun for 10 minutes with it and then zone out. Fly away in one of those guitar spaceships from the cover.

Short and sweet.

Cliche 70s rock? Sure. But I like it.

If grown ups 2 were an album, I imagine this is what it would sound like

bastante top

AWESOME.

Pretty middle of the road stuff, except for the two more widely known tracks. I could do without it tbh. 2.0/5.0 Best Song: More Than A Feelin

Some riffs, but mainly shite divorced dad rock

Very enjoyable, a bridge between early heavy metal and the more pop oriented rock of the 80s.

peak classic rock. don't care if More Than a Feeling is overplayed. Bonus: it reminds me of the scrubs episode But all the other tracks are also great and nearly all are the same quality as More Than a Feeling
