Reviews (page 2 of 15)

Pretty good, really is a classic.

I do not particularly like Rock, but this was quite awesome and melodic, and not tooo heavy on the solos if I remember correctly. I simply enjoyed!

Impressive for being Boston's debut album. So many classic rock songs on it but all of them are somewhat overplayed.

14 year old me would have loved this album. Slightly older me did enjoy this slice of classic soft rock. A fair few bangers and not many fillers. Leaning towards a 4 which is more than I expected.

I wasn’t familiar with Boston until recently but these songs really slap

A childhood favorite. Timeless as far as AOR goes. Favorite tracks: First five. Rock & Roll Band is underrated. 4/5

Weird, I just saw this album the other day and thought "When is that gonna pop up on the generator?" Unfortunately, today is that day. This is music for guys named Rick driving home on a Friday afternoon in a 240 Datsun after a long day at the office park, hoping Delp's vocals and Scholz's guitar can give him peace of mind. He'll arrive at his apartment, heat up some leftovers and call Tricia to come over. It's not bad. Delp is a great singer. Scholz is a hell of a player....and the fact that this was recorded in Scholz's basement studio while sounding like it was recorded in one of the nicest Hollywood studios is a testament to how smart he was and how good the rest of the band was, too. But for me, the guitars are too shiny. The harmonies are too sweet. I just don't like it, but I respect the guys who made it...so, it gets a 3 for me. Glad I listened, glad I learned about the band but wouldn't want to listen to it again.

Very good in 8 second bursts as film score to say “this is all in the 70s, ok?”.

Iconic (but overplayed) singles, production is really great. But I don’t have an emotional connection with it.

I feel like every time I turn on a classic rock radio station, Boston is playing... so much so, that I'm sort of sick of hearing it. If it wasn't overplayed so much, I'd probably like them a heck of a lot better.

This album is fun! Can see where the darkness got their inspiration.

If I was as adept a multi-instrumentalist as Tom Scholz, I would probably feels as light and joyous as the music he appears to make. Although, if I was as adept a multi-instrumentalist as Tom Scholz, I think I would be compelled to and obliged to make music more emotionally and philosophically complex than anything Tom Scholz makes here. Of course, there is no reason that facility in one area should mean ability in another. There is no emotional component to proficiency. Indeed, it is easy to believe that the isolation and focus required to master any instrument, then to arrange and produce a record, might have a negative, stultifying effect on one emotionally - maybe bringing you down, maybe making you cold, maybe making you puerile. We know that being in the music business destroys a lot of people. Then, to later read of the strange circumstances around the suicide of Brad Delp, Scholz's long-term band mate and vocalist, the mouthpiece of Scholz's euphoric schmaltz, reminds me that, as much as we would like to believe in one, there is no art to read the mind's construction in the art. Boston may sound empty and upbeat and airheaded, but there are real people behind the pap. Yesterday, you wrote eloquently about Whispering Pines as a study in loneliness (rightly highlighting the shallowness of my own analysis). And, of course, Richard Manuel could not write lyrics to his heart-breaking tune, leaving Robbie Robertson to complete the task. It was, of course, Manuel who would, like Delp, take his own life and Robertson, like Scholz, who would become the bad guy in the group's story. But, in the case of Whispering Pines, there is an alchemy of collaboration that brings out something that was hidden by one of the communicators. With Boston, Scholz's domineering control actually suppresses rather than expresses. There is no alchemy, only lead - buoyant, bubbly lead. 1.5 A day after listening to the mesmerising Garth Hudson at the keys it is the organ, more than anything else, that encapsulates the creative poverty of Boston’s debut album. Where Hudson contributes thoughtful melody and atmosphere Tom Scholz has only a dog-eared book of cliches; scale stairs in triplets terminating in the big trill, volume swells, palm glissandi, there’s even a Tierce de Picardie in the middle of Smokin’. Less music-making than a clown show. It’s embarrassing to listen to and if the prim production had left any actual texture on the organ it would still be embarrassing. The guitars are not much better. The pick-scraping…frig. Of course there are those, Americans probably, who will point out that if Boston’s music is rich in classic rock cliche - it’s because their 90 quadrillion-selling debut helped make those cliches. Well thanks Boston. I do like More Than A Feeling - a musical monument to air-punching and steering wheel slapping. It is stupidly enjoyable and couldn’t have been made by any band burdened with even an ounce of good taste or musical class. I am also grateful to Boston for putting More Than A Feeling at the start of their album instead of pretending we might want to hear any of the rest of this first. 1.5/5

Heard Before? Yup. My parents were Columbia House members. Notes: - how can i criticize something that so perfectly achieves its own goals in the first three songs? everything i despise about this is exactly what it sets out to accomplish. - after those first three songs, it flattens out to become purely an embarrassing simulacrum of rockist ideals circa 1976. - but because everything is so gloriously recorded, i can still smile at the organ solo in "smokin" even though the song as a whole belongs in cringe hell. Verdict: I hate this album, but for the first three songs, i thoroughly enjoy hating it, spite and admiration perfectly balanced. After that I get tired. Listen Again? It would take a lot of convincing.

This is the musical equivalent of a hot dog stand. It doesn’t matter how you dress it up, it still is just a wet fart in the end.

not even a feeling

Ok trying to piece together what is going on with the UFO on the album cover. 1) It's actually a giant guitar? 2) There is a dome with a city (Boston?) inside it 3) It's escaping in the nick of time as the planet blows up. So in my meta-narrative, the album artwork is encouraging the baby boomers to continue destroying the planet/relationships with their loved ones while using rock and roll and nostalgic escapism to remain personally insulated from the effects of their actions. I think this is sort of borne out in the lyrics of a lot of the songs. There's also some stuff about wanting to be a famous rock band or get laid. Anyhow I thought about where this lands in the 1-3 range and although I don't like it I guess this is like the best example of what people mean when they talk about "arena rock." Although IMHO if that's what you are into at least have the decency to be into KISS, a band that understands they are making carnival distraction music and accordingly wears clown makeup. So it gets a 2, like in my ideal world if this is playing in the background at a bar that has a lot of pinball machines I'm not going to be too upset about it.

what is that guitar melody in "more than a feeling"? i'm not sure if it's the originator or if it is itself pulling from something else, but i just can't place it. tip of my tongue. given that this is all certifiable Dad Rock on every Top Classic Rock list, i figure i probably have just heard this more than i realize, but i found this monotonous and boring. it's sound that was playing for a little under 40 minutes. mentally while listening to this album i was standing in line at a theme park waiting to get on a roller coaster thinking about what i would have for lunch. it's cool how extremely clean and technically complex this is for something entirely self-produced, but to me it says something about an album when it's more entertaining to read about the sound engineering techniques employed rather than actually listen to it.

way too American for my European ass

So overplayed in my lifetime

My dislike for this album was more than a feeling 🤣 jk it’s just really not my style of music, and I feel like commercials have used so many of these songs so many times that listening to Boston feels like an ad break from the music I actually want to listen to. Better than Deep Purple

It all sounded the same.

If someone here has classical music training, it doesn’t show. Just a mid-70s rock band with one big hit. Being played on rotation on a radio station doesn't mean ‘great’, it just means ‘background filler’, 2

I've always had the feeling that there's something about Boston (the band) that I can't stand, but I've never actually listened to a whole album before. Turns out it's more than a feeling; Boston (the band) seems to me the very definition of everything I hate about rock music. This record has no (zero) redeeming qualities. It has in fact no qualities at all but now at least I can say with confidence that I really can't stand Boston (the Band).

Батя-рок батя-рокович

"Hey guys, let's form a bland!" Dull, dull, dull stadium rock nonsense.

Dear lord. Proof that the early 70s really was the low point for rock music. I hate everything about this album. I hate the twiddly guitars. I hate the trite lyrics. I hate the stadium rock aesthetic. I hate the haircuts. Punk couldn't come soon enough...

holy crap I hate arena rock

Possibly my most hated album of all time. The songs are fine to good, actually, but Side 1 of it was the warm-up tape for the late 80s/early 90s Richmond Colts and fuck them. They tried to play this during the warm-up to the 1990 BC Final, but Ollie High wouldn't stand for that and there was a big kerfuffle at the scorer's table. Then we beat that ass.

Nope, Boston sucks.

Great drumming. Clever musicianship but deadly dull.

More than a feeling and some other songs I don't recall.

I struggle to believe anyone can honestly like this music

Wow, I hated that. Nothing seemed to grab the entire time. The consistent pace. The wailing vocals. Hell, I even hated the album art.

Typical 70’s soft rock.. not really for me

i groaned when the generator gave me this album. i feel no different after listening. their slick, commercial sound is lifeless and empty, every song is over-produced, and the whole thing is too safe and predictable. it gets one star and an eye roll from me.

A hard nope. ‘More than a feeling’ is fine as a sound bed to a cheesy advert. I couldn’t get through the rest. Too clean, too earnest, too serious, too not very enjoyable.

Boston is for Hard Rock what The Cars was for Pop Music. Both albums are near greatest hits for their respective bands and are filled with solid tracks throughout. The only negative is what follows for Boston. They never quite match the brilliance here. Nostalgic note: I first listened to this album on a toy "Show and Tell" record player that had a projection screen for accompanying slides for kids' storybooks. I remember listening and wondering why Boston didn't have slides I could use.

Wow, just so good. I love how even the songs that start off slow like "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" and "Hitch a Ride" end up rocking out by the end. Apparently I've either this to this album before or all of these songs were popular enough to have reached my ears separately. "More Than a Feeling" reminds me of that one "Scrubs" episode. "Foreplay / Long Time" reminds me of playing Rock Band. "Smokin'" is probably my favorite just because I love the drums. Everything was great.

This album is bound up in so many layers of nostalgia and childhood reverie to not give it 5 stars. Sure it drops off a bit but look at that superb album art.

Loving this album. They are really good at vocal riffs with killer harmony.

great album top starting track loved it loving 70s rock

This feels like the album you would put on if someone wanted to listen to 70s American rock for the first time.

Heater after heater. Zero filler. Criminally underrated band

I have a friend who has been into classic rock since he was a kid. I was never into classic rock when I was younger. I messaged him after I listened to this album and said "OK, you may have been right." This album is just very good. It starts off incredibly strong with More Than a Feeling and Peace of Mind. The only part that I didn't love as much was Hitch a Ride and Something About You. Everything else was great.

Офигенный альбом песня Foreplay зацепила уже давно техничностью

Rock bangers.

Finally, one of the greatest albums ever made. This is worth more than 5 stars. Fantastic

Certainly in the conversation as one of the best debut albums of all time. It's definitely one of the most fully formed expressions of a group that never really evolved beyond this. But "this" is pure rockin' party bliss!

Iconic

Incredible A side followed by a really great B side. This is a super fun listen

What can you say? Just give it 5 ⭐️ and move on!

A childhood favorite. Every song is amazing, songwriting is killer, playing is killer, singing is killer, you get the idea

What? Another mid-70s rock album for me? Sure, twist my arm. But this album is an easy 5 out of 5. Basically banger after banger, and I honestly didn’t realize just how much of Boston’s most iconic music came from this one album. It’s packed. Compared to some of their classic rock peers, Boston feels way peppier and more energized, like the whole thing is running on premium guitar fuel. The vocals soar, the guitars glow, and every track feels built for blasting out of a car stereo with absolutely no concern for your speakers. No wonder this band became a classic rock radio staple.

5/5 Such a great 70's rock album. I love how this album is produced, the guitars sound so crisp and driving. The vocals and harmony are great and there are so many memorable and iconic guitar riffs. I love the extended instrumental parts of this album. More Than A Feeling and Foreplay/Long Time are my favorite tracks, but I don't think this album has a bad track. More Than A Feeling 5/5: I have heard this song so many times but I still enjoy listening to it. The guitar tone sounds so good and has such a memorable riff. The whole production on this song is excellent. Great catchy melody and the build up and release after the chorus are great. Peace of Mind 4.6/5: I have heard this one so many times as well. I love the harmonies in the chorus and once again the guitar riffs are great. Foreplay/LongTime 4.8/5: The organ arpeggios, guitar riffs, bass line, and drums sound so epic together. It hits so hard when the guitar starts riffing and the vocals come in. The acoustic guitar sounds so crisp Rock and Roll Band 4/5: A solid simple rock and roll song just like the title suggests. Smokin' 4.5/5: A great bass line with and driving riff. Catchy hook. I love organ solos. Hitch a Ride 4.2/5: A nice chill beginning to the song and more organ so I am happy. A very boston sounding guitar riff. It is cool there are so many exteneded instrumental parts in this album Something About You 4/5: I like the "something about you" hook in the song and the background vocals. Let Me Take You Home Tonight 4.4/5: Very interesting rhytmn at the start/riff of the song

This album published when I was two, yet thanks to classic radio and also siblings with 8 tracks, I know every song. My sister & her boyfriend would play it on their car dates, I'm certain More Than A Feeling was at their wedding. The cover is iconic, if you were there. This 5 star is for my favorite (and only!) sister

So many excellent songs. I wasn't aware how strongbthe tracklist was on this debut album.

I love those album. So many fun and classic songs. So glad this is a part of the project. The bass (along with all the other instruments ) in foreplay/long time is one of my favorites.

GAWD DAYUM, this is gooooood I knew 6 of the 8 tracks here extremely well. I honestly dont need to hear More Than A Feeling ever again, but hey, hits are hits This is a perfect album and may be the tippity top of all 70s maximalist guitar hero rock. I couldnt help but fantasize what it wouldve been like to tour with this as your debut album after years of struggle and passion for the music. Is this the GOAT of debut albums?

Pairs quite well with the Frampton vibes. Maybe a bit of guilty pleasure, but I think these guys deserve a little more love than the other washed up casino acts (REO Speedwagon being my best example of this genre). I am surprised and also not surprised that the boys from Boston hate Boston.

Great Arena rock, with The Cars, one of the greatest debuts of all time because it plays like their greatest hits.

*1976. *37 mins, 8 songs... Yet somehow the first 5 songs are massive hits (More Than a Feeling, Peace of Mind, Long Time, Rock N Roll Band, and Smokin). *Completely stacked album - not a band song in sight. RATING - 9/10

Landmark 1970s rock classic! Amazing production, killer tunes, and Brad Delpe's extraordinary vocals.

5 - mastapiece

One of my top 10 debut albums of all time. It's often thought of as ubiquitous today but when I was a kid in the 70s this was absolutely groundbreaking. Six of the eight tracks were classic rock staples for over 25 years. "More Than A Feeling" and "Foreplay/Long Time" are still played regularly now 50 years later. I still have no problem cranking this one UP! (10) ★★★★★

#975. Easily the best debut album of all time. About half of these songs were number one hits, and all of them have been played in heavy rotation by every rock station in the land for 50 years now. 5/5: yup

Find me another album that so perfectly sums up the "70's classic rock sound"..i'll wait.

Greatest debut album of all time

One of the greatest debit albums of all time

it's just a fun time

I remember back when I was younger going to a Strawberries record store searching for Boston’s greatest hits album to buy. When I came across what I thought was that album, as it had all the great songs on it that I wanted, I was surprised that it didn’t say greatest hits on it. Bought it anyway. Only days later did I realize that this was just their self titled debut album. To this day, I am still amazed by this record. While I certainly wouldn’t consider myself a massive Boston fan, it’s undeniable how great this record is. Front to back, it has excellent song after excellent song and is truly a no skip album. Can’t be anything other than a 5 then. Amazing effort.

one of the greatest debut albums ever. It's always a great listen. every song is a banger.

This album is about as good as it gets. Top 5 all-time favorite album for me. Not ONE bad song on here. Even the least good song in here is better than 90% of music that came out in the 70s! Just incredible. The custom made guitar sound is astonishing for that time, the drum sound is amazing, and the singing is great. In addition, GREAT songwriting. I would give it 6 stars if I could.

Arguably the best debut alblum of all time. Peace of Mind is one of my favorite songs. Hitch a Ride is also an awesome song, overshadowed by so many good songs on the alblum.

Can you beat a better debut album than this one. Absolutely classic!!!!

one of the greatest albums of all time

Just need more

Every song sounds the same. Great album though. Very derivative of themselves in future albums. Best debut album ever.

One of the all time great albums.

Ah the classic. Almost wall to wall singles. Very familiar with this one and happy to spin it again!

ALL TIME CLASSIC!

Something new for me, but one of this songs I have already heard, cool rock and I like it

im from here its the goat

All bangers all the time

Banger after banger here. I don’t know how you can possibly follow this one up, this is great.

1번트랙 ㅈㄴ 유명한게 여기꺼였구나 쭉 들어보니까 처음 듣는건데도 싹 뭐가 있네 내 취향이였스

Nostalgia pura

Surely one of the best (if not the best) debut albums of all time.

mucho bueno MORE THAN A FEEELLIIIIIIIING

Every song a banger

I've got an old copy of the LP in my record collection. I love the back cover notes. They have a long essay that is regularly interspersed with a plea to: "Listen to the Record!" Today this seems like a played out cliche album, and forget that this was a radical leap of faith by a couple guys independently producing a record in one guy's basement using home-made equipment. This album still holds up. "More Than a Feeling" and "Foreplay / Long Time" especially are masterpieces. The rest of the album is incredibly solid as well. No duds. It doesn't have to be your style. You might consider these tracks played out. This album remains a seminal work worth listening to.

More Than A Feeling is my 451st favourite song of all time. It's a bit of a guilty pleasure, but its just so damn good. Foreplay / Long Time is kinda fun. Maybe I just need to stop trying to be cool and embrace that I like this. Why this works for me and something like Def Leppard or Bon Jovi or Aerosmith doesn't I can't really say. I'm feeling generous. Fave Tracks: More Than a Feeling, Foreplay / Long Time, Smokin', Hitch a Ride 4.5/5

Classic rock album. Staple of any respectable vinyl collection. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

5 батяроков из 5

Holy moly—this is a monster album. I didn’t own this album but know every song well; all eight are classic rock radio staples. And there’s a reason for that: there is not a lame song in the bunch. I wouldn’t consider myself a big power/prog rock fan, but the melodies, harmonies, shiny guitar-forward arrangements are beautifully done. Boston is actually more comparable to Fleetwood Mac, their contemporaries, than I realized. Maybe they’re due for a rediscovery by Gen Z?

Definitely deserves to be on this list! Wish they didn’t fade away

This is a great record. I'm not a big fan but it is a great record.

What a huge album! I listened to this non-stop when it came out and knew every part when playing it now. Instantly recognizable layered guitars, Brad Delp voice. Tom Scholz wrote and produced this in his home and it still sounds great.

9 years old…totally connected and knew what they were singing about…even though I had no clue

This is one album where every song was a hit. One of the greatest albums of all time.

The ultimate home demo? Tom Scholtz credited an incredible sounding album; everything is bigger than everything else, guitars, vocals, organ layered and polished, all largely recorded in his home studio. There's not a bad track although perhaps few memorable ones - 'More Than A Feeling' and 'Foreplay/Long Time' the standout exceptions. It has been an age since I last listened to the whole thing and may well be another until I do so again, but it is an incredible feat of engineering. It might be cheesy but sometimes you crave really good cheese...

one of the iconic debut albums in RNR. 100k/5

So many hits on this album! Brings back memories of Boston, Journey, Styx and the Cars.

ЭТО ВООБЩЕ СЦКА ЛУЧШЕЕ. 10/10. Лучше уже ничего не будет

This album was an absolute staple of my childhood. Partly because it was huge everywhere, but also because I grew up in the Boston area. Every kid from New England in the 70s and 80s knows this album note for note. It's hard to overstate the impact of this album and this band in New England. In 1987 they went on tour after a 8 year hiatus. When the tour came to the Worcester Centrum (which was the biggest arena in the Boston area at the time) they immediately sold out the two or three scheduled nights. They then added a couple of nights and sold them out. This went on and on until they ended up playing nine sold out shows in a row! It was insane! I've never seen something like it where a concert just kept selling tickets and adding dates. Tom Scholz is also one of the most underrated innovators in rock music history. As an MIT engineer, he just invented the tools needed to get the sound he wanted because they didn't exist yet.

Production is outstanding, vocals and musicianship is near perfect. Really fun album begining to end

Decent listen for today. I’ve heard most of these songs throughout my life due to classic rock radio and being familiar with Boston!

⚡️⚡️⚡️

it was okay I only listened to one song so I dont think my review matters. but it was a classic for sure

Fucking awesome

Amazing debut. Guitar work was outstanding and a really well produced album for the time!

I'm pretty sure I've listened to every one of these songs individually. All together this thing is a fucking BONKERS good album. Good lord.

I liked some more than other, but most of the music didn’t have lyrics.

All time favorite of mine from growing up. Will never listen to the haters, this album is catchy as hell.

An almost perfect rock album

Top five All time

A real good dad feel. Love a self titled album of course.

10/10 - took me back in time. Solid album.

It’s like hetero Queen

Cet album qui me fait penser aux extraterrestres. J’aodre …

This could be the best debut album ever. It rocks from start to finish. Excellent quality musicianship engineering and production. This is still my "it's summer album". Brad Delp has one of the least talked about rock voices and deserves more notice.

MORE THAN A FEEELIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN If this was my first time ever being exposed to the Boston album, you'd probably find me saying that I liked it but it wasn't anything special. But I loooooove this shit. I have so many pleasant memories tied to those first two songs. I remember driving with my mom and cranking up the radio any time More Than a Feeling came on. In fact, this album is primarily composed of songs that make me go "turn that shit up!" when I see them on the radio. Peace of Mind was one of the first songs I learned on guitar. It's absolutely representative of a specific moment in time, that being the era in which it came out. The production is great enough that it's one of the few albums from 1976 that aged somewhat gracefully. They never made anything quite as good as this, but all the time Tom Scholz put into making this album sound "perfect" really paid off. It's beautiful. I gotta love it.

5 out of 8 songs have a wikipedia page. oh the guitar line of foreplay is INSANEEEEE i love this one already im going to make a spotify playlist right now just to have this

I've got absolutely nothing bad to say about this. Every song is a bona fide banger, radio rock anthem extraordinaire. And then the story of this dude fucking around with tones in his basement, about to face rejection once again, only to become one of the most important rock bands of the 70's? It's just a dream come true, and the riffs are there in plain view. Great shit, no notes.

One of THE great rock debut records, made even better when you realize it was a DIY project. Simply a classic.

I forgot how important this album was to me at 12-13! I listened to it again, remembering the titanic ecstasy of the imaginary arena these songs played in. They were too big for anywhere!

I love this album. Automatic five stars. Bring back to all the feels!

Heard it, a classic.

cried while thinking about my dad. danced and sung too.

Εξαιρετικό

There can’t be many debut records where essentially every song has become a radio staple 50 years after the release. This record plays like a greatest hits record. It may not necessarily be my favorite classic rock sound of all time, but there’s no denying the level of songs throughout. Got to be a 5/5.

I've already heard every single song on this album prior to today, but I'd never listened to this album front to back until today. Knew this album was a classic but didn't know pretty much ALL their hits were on this album. Pretty cool!

The official source of AOR and a masterclass in rock production and arrangement at the time. Patented engineer Tom Scholz was the mastermind behind this band and there are guitar playing similarities with Brian May at times. The opening track is one of my favourites of all time and the fact that the band’s post debut existence was fragmented, splintered and dominated by law suits and hiatuses is a cliched example of ‘what might have been’. Clever people taking a not so clever form and making it into a Rolls Royce.

Apparently I’ve been sleeping on Boston. I’ve never thought of Boston as a guitar band but this still felt fresh at 50 years old. I want to learn some of these riffs! The vocal harmonies were killer and the production was incredible. No way this was recorded in the guitarists basement like Wikipedia says!

Legendary debut, timeless rock album.

Classic. First 5 songs are all great.

I get home from work, put the record on the turntable, and that intro begin to play….suddenly everything is cool and groovy. By the end of the album I’m ready to grow my hair and my mustache. I fuckin love this album and always will. Whether I’m singing along, playin some air guitar or bashing some air drums, this album always makes me feel good. SMOKIN!!!! SMOKIN!!!!

I really like this album, I would hear it again

One of the best debut albums in rock history. It defined the sound of 70’s rock.

Every song is awesome.

Not my usual listen , genre wise, yet there are timeless classics I've heard in movies before.

One of the greats

The perfect classic rock album, start to finish. Like the iconic guitar in the opener, Boston is More Than a Feeling, it's an experience. I was hooked as a teenager, wearing out my cassette tape and even recording from the radio, and it still demands air drums and air guitar from me today. Though they would release a paltry few other albums and did have some memorable singles, this debut was their pinnacle.

Every track is a hit. Insane album

Masterpiece. Timeless. Second best selling debut album of all time.

Great album, solid listen and a terrific start to my musical journey

This album is incredible, every song on here sounds great and is amazing

Saw the first title and knew this was gonna be peak. Bonus points for being relatively short.

🤘🏻

Absolute classic for a reason. Overplayed, yes. But still a banger. 5/5

The greatest rock album I have zero desire to ever hear a single track from ever again. Overplayed to the point of annoyance for three decades after its release.

Holy shit, it's just all jams. Start to finish, all jams.

Faktisk en fabelaktig debutskive. Om du ikke liker denne er du ‘’bonat’’!

Fantastic sound on this. More than a feeling is an absolute classic and a great way to open the album. 37 minutes hasn’t gone by so fast in a long time. Will be listening to more Boston

Perfect album literally

Not to be a shameless homer, but the first four tracks remain a generational run.

I was in the Air Force when this album came out and there was a guy from Boston who knew them when they were just a local band and he would go crazy talking about how great this band was. So I bought the album and it was a sound I had never heard before, sort of light metal with incredible hooks and grinding buzzing guitars. This is a period when disco was king and new wave and punk are starting to emerge. Very creative and exciting time.

Greatest debut album

Not a massive fan of classic rock, but this might be my favourite album in that genre. It's absolute killer throughout. I will never get bored of Foreplay/Longtime.

Awesome

Great debut albums happen much more frequently than one would expect. Arguably though, this would be amongst the best albums that fit that criteria.

so good they named a city after it.

I can't believe an engineer made this on his basement alone

Fantastic

Classic

me likey

This album I can't believe. I've never been into Boston unless it came up on the radio. Even then I was a passive listener. In fact I believe this is the first time I've ever heard this album from front to back. And yet, I knew all but one song. Was every song released as a single? Because I've heard all (but one) probably a THOUSAND times on Q-FM 96 alone! Indeed with each passing track I recall "oh yeah I know this one too!" But reading up on it I can't believe what a masterpiece this thing is. The fact that one guy does the majority of the album by himself in his home and that this was the final product is astounding. Production and songwriting are years ahead of 1976. I don't want to give this thing 5 stars because I'm still not that into Boston. But I think I'd feel guilty if I didn't.

Hit after hit after hit after hit! The whole damn record!! This thing hits you with so many rights you'll be begging for a left! Not one wrinkle! Excellent!

This is a classic album with no skips.

Oh, so it's just wall-to-wall bangers. Got it. Listened to: at Metrotech. Favorite tracks: More Than a Feeling, Peace of Mind, Hitch a Ride, Let Me Take You Home Tonight

Had a compilation album were the opening track was "More than a Feeling". Used to listen to it every day to wake myself up while I went to work pulling weeds at a tree nursery. For that song alone, the album starts at a 3. They follow that up with banger after banger. Not a bad song on the album, but it does lose a bit of steam towards the end. On the whole, 5 stars.

5 stars

4.56/5 Stars Top Songs: Smokin', More That a Feeling, Peace of Mind

The Beatles were on lsd when they wrote sgt peppers, this album sounds like Sgt peppers were on lsd and wrote this. Weird album not terrible but maybe a little too out there crazy. When I think kinks I always think of that seen in the Bob Dylan movie where Bob Dylan’s like that’s the kinks man in his funny voice. Very unrelated sry.

one of the best!

Generational talent and bangers. One of the best ever debut albums and the whole thing is loaded with back-to-back great songs. I heard it took the guy a long time to get a record deal so just kept making songs by himself until he'd built a classic. This can trade songs back n forth with any debut album and win.

Absolute classic. While imperfect, it has such an incredible feel good communal vibe to it which made the songs really enjoyable to listen to

An absolute classic album. Just a solid jam though and through.

Great album

This is classic rock at its pique! I knew all of these songs because my dad loves Boston and we always listened to this album. I didn’t realize until this listen as an adult how perfect it is! Every song is a classic and doesn’t get old! This is truly the best 70s rock can be. Top Songs: Peace of Mind, More Than a Feeling, Something About You, Rock & Roll Band

For what it is, this is just perfect. This is a true 8/8 and I’ve heard every single one of these songs so many times on the radio. Melodies and harmonies are on point throughout. Love the softer second half just as much as the staples on the first. Brad Delp had an unreal voice. The delivery of “I’ve got to keep on chasing that dream, though I may never find it… I’m always just behind it”is more affecting than it has any right to be. Fucking all time awesome album.

Pound for pound the best classic rock album of the 70s. Also another one of those albums that I can't imagine not liking, you just want every one of these songs to just go on forever. As a respected sportswriter put it, this is the Tim Duncan of classic rock.

5/5 CASH

Ah fuck it, unc music is great. This is incredibly good, which didn't really surprise me considering how much I enjoy the 2 more popular tracks off this album already.

I love that this album, which sounds so big, like it was destined to be played in fifty thousand seat arenas, before throngs of underwear-throwing fans, was made by a dude in his basement. To all the subterranean geniuses out there toiling on some brilliant idea under a flickering fluorescent light, this one goes out to you. Five sump pumps.

I wish I listened to this first thing in the morning so more than a feeling would be stuck in my head all day

gorgeous

Nonstop bangers

Classic it was nice listening to the full album. I’ve only heard half of the songs on the album.

Courtney: damn near perfect. Craig: great album

The only thing wrong with this album is that it isn't long enough.

It's unreal how good this is all the way through. An all-timer for me.

I definitely like the style of music, I find the chorus very interesting and I like how I can hear the effort that was put in to the songs, I’ve only heard a couple songs but I will definitely be listening to more!

Absolute cinema.

Listened to it many times and still love it. Something About You is a lesser known favorite. I get that they are a cheesy band, but the whole thing is great

Офигенный альбом песня Foreplay зацепила уже давно техничностью

Excellent Album!!!! I have never listened v to this record, but I have heard all but one song. Pretty unbelievable all the hits on this one. Found the CD on Amazon for $5 new, and this will be my first purchase that I was turned on to here. The one dying I had not heard is fantastic. Probably one of the best albums I've ever heard. Absolutely a smash from top to bottom.

Boston has a pretty interesting story. It was started by Tom Scholz, an MIT grad who went on to work at Polaroid and used his spare money to build a recording studio in his basement. He played all the instruments on the demo for this album except for drums. When they were officially signed, the label wanted them to re-record it in a proper studio, but Scholz didn't want to, so he sent the rest of the band ahead to fake it in the studio while he recorded it in his basement, and then they added some of the studio dubs in later. Regardless, it sounds amazing. Not everything from this era of recording does, but Boston's self-titled debut sounds very polished, especially given it's origins. Even more in it's favor is the songwriting. The songs are punchy, instrumentally driven and melodic. Brad Delp's voice is terrific, of course. This album doesn't get a lot of critical favor because, I don't know, it's too catchy? Doesn't have enough sad music so it's shallow or something? I think it's great.

This album just may hold the title for the highest percentage of songs that are overplayed on the radio(75 percent? That sounds about right). While I'm(now) fed up with hearing six of these songs, it's still one of the greatest debut albums of all time, and is an album with arguably no skips. Whether you're in New York, Boston, or Bozeman, this album is ear porn. Favorite Track: "Smokin'".

Finest southern rock

Boston

What a ripper! All great aongs, great guitars, vocals. And the production is excellent. Learning about the making of the this album I was shocked to hear it was made in a basement with homemade recoding equipment.

Solid, tydlig AOR-5a.

Yet another one of those seminal classic rock albums. Your parents have heard it, you've heard it, your unborn children have heard it. But let's sit back and analyze this for a moment. This was Boston's DEBUT studio album. With track #1 being one of the most iconic rock songs of all time. That kind of stuff just doesn't happen by accident (or maybe it does...) Turns out that changing your band's name from 'Mother's Milk' goes a long way. That, and a lot of persistence with record labels to sign your band. Pretty much everything was in place through many home studio recording sessions, all that was needed was some polish and a little recognition from the suits. What makes this group & album so special? Why, the "Boston sound" of course! What does that mean? (Don't ask me, I'm not from Baaahston) Those lush, melodic hooks, big guitar solos and various vocal harmonies probably have something to do with it, though. It's just all so...well-constructed and satisfying to listen to. I think many can agree that this particular album blows its metaphorical load early on with the first three tracks being among the group's biggest singles. That's really all you need to make a lasting impression, though. For what it's worth, I also really enjoy "Something About You" and the closer "Let Me Take You Home Tonight". I'll rate this with my heart.

I have never listened to Boston before. I have been missing out!

How is this a debut album??? It's so amazing and executed to precision. I definitely need to add more Boston to my music listening.

Sick guitars and voice 25/1/26

annoyingly good

So fun, forgot how awesome this album is

Goated

So great I even added to daily playlist Gives me inxs and spandau ballet vibes even tho it was made earlier

One of my favorites, it brings me full spectre of emotions

Listened with Nina while we were having a quintessential BOSTON snow day. Took the red line downtown and listened on the train. Obviously love more than a feeling but discovered some other good ones!

MORE THAN A FEELIIIIINGGGG great album, not just more than a feeling

immaculate no notes

What an excellent album. Each song is a classic hit. I love this album.

Classic

No skips, loved it

What the cover sounds like

Fire so good

one of the greatest rock albums of all time. god damn

This was a good one. I can see why it is regarded as one of the best rap albums of all time.

I have this on vinyl. Next!

SO MUCH DAMN FUN. Loveeeeeee how gleeful it is. Wonderful

Smokin’!

More than a feeling, smokin >> Upbeat, rock and roll.

such a fun album, i love anything 70s

The last concert I went to in Boston was Boston they played all of Boston

Possibly the greatest debut album of the 70s? Just chock full of absolute hits and just beautiful production. Candidly Boston holds a special place in my heart, so a little biased. The backstory to this is so wild. Just a guy in his home studio mixing and recording all of the instruments, hires a singers to hang out the tunes, and then kablam you've got an iconic rock record. It's too bad they got stuck up with nitpicking future releases because they really got lightning in a bottle here.

Perfect

A long time favourite

classic 70s. twice listened

Before listening: I am not familiar with Boston, the album art is interesting. It feels like a more hard core version of the Out of the Blue album by the Electric Light Orchestra, with less whimsical feeling and more masculine energy. I'm not 100% sure what to expect, I assume it will be rock or rock adjacent, end of the world, doom and gloom maybe. Listening: Initial reaction is it feels like the Beatles, very quickly is not the Beatles. ok i am familiar with more than a feeling, i always assumed this song was from the 90's. I'm learning that much of the music i feel like was popular in 90's movies and such was music from the 70's, interesting. This is a good song, but i have heard it before so i am bias. I'm vibing with this album much more than previous days, I could absolutely see myself listening to this in the future. There is a better synergy with the instruments and vocals, it feels harmonious. Ok jazz vibes for a second there, fun. This is very fun, It's doing the most and its absolutely working. I'm very surprised I haven't heard of them before. Towards the end i started losing interest but that's pretty good considering the only song i knew was the first one. After Listening: Really good, i feel like the bangers are in the first half of the album but that's not a bad thing, really strong rock album. Nice guitar without feeling too much, i feel like the main thing letting this album down is the cover art. It possibly lowered my expectations and i enjoyed it more. 9/10

Classic

genuinely flawless, no notes already in collection (of course)

Awesome loved it

I mean come on, this is such a strong debut. A really incredible feat for a first album with several big hits. The riffs are fantastic, the songs are catchy, and it kept me entertained from beginning to end. This is one of the best debut albums I've heard on this generator. It's truly a masterpiece.

This was a no brainer, just good time all around. fav: More than a Feeling, Piece of Mind

surprisingly i've loved this

lovelovelove

First album from the list I have listened to front to back before (a few times) but not for several months. Regardless of what Boston did after this album (not much), it still holds up today as the first (and arguably best by a lot) arena rock album. I actually enjoyed the b-side of this album a lot more than I thought I would, as the production on this is clear while still being on the heavy side. Probably give this a 4.5, but since any of the songs can also be listened to alone (or with the album), this deserves 5 stars with the generator

They managed to make both the perfect representation of a rock album of the era, while also sounding unique A pretty hard feat The bootleg sounds even better.

Great album and a classic.

Classic

esse é muito brabo

I am actually *shocked* at how much I love this album. I didn't want it to end, and I already downloaded it to listen offline. The sound just teleports you to the 70s in the best way possible, and the lyrics are cheesy (as so many classic rock lyrics are) but interesting, nostalgic, and easy for anyone to connect to.

I said that I wasn't going to give this a 5, however I really enjoyed this. To me it kinda had a little bit of "every song sounds the same" but not in a bad way. The highs on this one are really good and honestly there aren't really any lows. a concise and solid ~40 minutes of jammin

hell yeah

foreplay is awesome....

4.5 (37:37, 8 tracks, debut album, 1976) Arena Rock Album was their debut and plays like a greatest hits album. Was surprised how much I enjoyed this album and that I'm giving it a 5. However, this album I could listen to so many times and it always puts a smile on my face. Not a bad song on it! 1. "More Than a Feeling" 4:45 2. "Peace of Mind" 5:02 3. "Foreplay/Long Time" 7:47 4. "Rock & Roll Band" 2:59 5. "Smokin'" 4:19 6. "Hitch a Ride" 4:11 7. "Something About You" 3:48 8. "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" 4:44

Daaaaaaaa

This album is pretty great. I've liked this a lot, and, honestly, there is nothing bad I can say about it. Maybe it's not the most innovative album I've ever listened to, but it is such an enjoyable one. So, even if it's not a masterpiece, it's a solid nine for me. Really good and enjoyable, with some fantastic tracks and a little bit of variety (even though not much).

Most (if not all) songs were great.

Perfection.

Nostalgic. Boston, Cars, foreigner, joe Jackson. Wore those albums out in HS. Boston my favorite of them start to finish

One of the best debut albums ever. None of their other albums even came close.

To me, this is an essential dad rock album. From start to finish head-boppers (I won’t say bangers). The perfect length of time. I could see how the songs get old if you hear them over and over again on the radio but as an album it’s pretty consuming in a great way— the music just kinda wraps around you. It feels a little like a roller coaster where maybe the music isn’t the most complex but at the end of the day it’s really fun.

Yes! Actual rock n roll

Very fun

The foundation that classic rock radio was built on. The songs on this album are all in the overplayed hall of fame. There’s a reason that is.

This album. No skips!!!

Yeah pretty much a greatest hits but its the whole damn album!

I like to pride myself on being able to spin a yarn on these reviews. To be able to ramble about any ol' album for ... oh, let's say, 486 words, minimum? I think that's my current average. I mean, that's just the kind of person I am, besides my general despise for quippy "tweet reviews" (y'know, the kind you see all over Letterboxd). If you have something to say, say it — and I just like to say it in as many words as my mind will allow. But I don't think I'll be able to write all **too much** about this album. Like, come on: it's Boston's self-titled debut. The one with "More Than A Feeling". You want me to pull out a 1,000 word essay about this album? I don't think so. It's just an incredibly fun album. Cheesy? Sure, but that's part of the enjoyment factor; anyone who gives this thing a 2 or 1 for that reason alone ain't no friend of mine. Take it from someone who's eaten a **lot** of cheese (literal) in her life. Dad rock? Yeah, but who ever said dads have bad taste in music? This shit rocks, and I like it just as much as any dad would. Is it over-played? I mean ... if that's your beef with it, I guess I can't really argue against it. Seems a shame to me throw the **entire** album under the bus just because a few songs were played maybe one time too often, but I get it. I guess it's just lucky for me, then, that I've never been exposed to any kind of over-play. I hear "More Than A Feeling" come on, I get so. So true when I hear "Foreplay/Long Time", or any other cut on this thing. Am I gonna tell you this is one of the greatest albums **ever**? No, I don't think so. But to my ears, it's simple, rockin' fun, and that's all I'd ever ask for it to be. On that front, dang, I couldn't give it any lower than a 5. And it's only fitting, then, that my review be simple to match. Lemme jus' close my eyes and drift away...

Didn't realize how many songs I knew from the radio were on here. The music is good as well. 4.5 bumped up to 5.

Really enjoyed more than I thought I would, knew most of the songs already but didn't really know they were Boston songs.

Incredible vocal melodies Good mix of guitar and organ solos Really nice blues feel to a lot of the songs Perfect driving music Least favorite song was the final song

I mean, this has got to be one of the best debut albums of all time for me. It's banger after banger after banger. Excellent bass lines and guitar riffs, some killer keyboards, awesome vocals. Only real criticism I can come up with is maybe it's a little repetitive? But man. So good. Half the album has been in my rotation for years. I'm not sure if I'd heard the rest of it, but those other songs are right up there with the hits for me.

Top drawer classic rock. Great vocals and guitar sound.

Catchy choruses. Great guitar tone. Amazing vocals. A perfect album.

Apologies, Boston. I had forgotten your game.

Excwllent

Most bands would kill to have eight hits over the course of their career. Boston went eight for eight on their first album. The poor man's American Queen. 🚢

RANKINGS 1) More Than A Feeling - 9.75 2) Peace of Mind - 9.6 3) Smokin' - 9.35 4) Something About You - 9.2 5) Foreplay/Longtime - 9.15 6) Let Me Take You Home Tonight - 9.1 7) Rock & Roll Band - 9.09 8) Hitch a Ride - 8.9 -------LIBRARY LINE----------- CALCULATED RATING - 9.27 PERSONAL RATING - 9.5 Front of the Album is amazing, Back is worse - but still great. I love the use of organs, the vocals are fantastic, these are all certified bops.

Banger after banger on this one. What a great album.

Nur geil.

I remember listening to this album after I heard "More Than a Feeling" on Guitar Hero. I was 13 and it transformed me. 22 years later my stomach filled with butterflies as each song came flooding back. The baby did not sleep on the way to daycare yesterday, we were too busy singing.

Made by one man with a guitar in his basement back in the 70s and it is still an all time classic.

Great rock album

Favourite track: Foreplay / Long Time Excellent album. None of the tracks are boring, Boston always manage to keep it interesting and change things up over the course of the song. More Than A Feeling is obviously great but I think it's actually overshadowed by tracks like Foreplay / Longtime, Peace Of Mind, and Smokin' - and almost seems a bit formulaic in comparison.

Ooh. That was a guilty pleasure. I suppose I've all these songs in my lifetime. Yes, it's 70s rock but it's not too pretentious with extended guitar solos and the rest. I've known about this album's existence for decades and some decades back I would have said it's no good because it's not cool. But now, I've got to say it rocks. Sorry, ghosts of cool past, I'm giving it a rockin' 5.

Loved this album. Reminds me of my father. So many strong songs on this one.

One of my favorite classic rock bands that I've neglected to actually collect their CD's. That will change soon!

Excellent debut album from Boston. Basically perfect.

I can't believe all of these songs are on a debut record. Perfect rock music, top to bottom. Amazing guitar riffs, iconic vocals, no complaints

Starts off with one of the best songs of all time and keeps going with great follow ups

"More than a feeling" is one of those iconic rock songs of all time. "Peace of mind" is powerful, with an amazing and relatable message. "Foreplay/Long time" is epic. Like, completely epic. That start?!?!?!? It doesn't even seem that long. "Rock & Roll band" has a cool rhythm and vibe. "Smokin'" didn't sit right with me at first, but the ending is epic. "Hitch a Ride" has probably the weakest melody of the album, but the guitar parts are rockin'. "Something about you" has just this essence. Top. "Let me take you home tonight" is just the perfect ending for the album.

Absolute 70s gold.

One of the greatest debut albums of all time, its a shame they never really did anything else. Almost every song here is a hit. Some people say it drags at the end but imo the 2 closing songs might bethe best of the album.

Classic!!

Now here we go! I LOVE THIS ALBUM! Was in heavy rotation for me in middle school. A great example of progressive classic rock leaning slightly more on the rock. An iconic album.

I liked this rock and roll 🎸 album 💿
