Van Halen
5/5
The guitar by Eddie is amazing on this first VH album. While it could have had a little better song lyrics, it still has enough great songs on it to get a 5.

Thundercat
1/5
Why is this on the list. I don’t like all the falsetto and who has a song that everyone wants to be a cat. I’m out.
Beatles
5/5
Still one of my all time favorite Beatles’ albums. From top to bottom it has variety of music type, instruments, and some classics by Harrison. They certainly went out on a high note.

Neil Young
3/5
The instruments and sound are good. Neil’s voice is okay but get’s on my nerves at times.

Bob Dylan
4/5
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
2/5
Liked the gospel backup, lyrics were a bit dark at times
Violent Femmes
3/5
Liked the percussion and more acoustic guitar sound, majority of album was solid
Red Hot Chili Peppers
2/5
Couple of good songs in this album, Flea’s bass sounded good, overall songs were not great
Moby
4/5
Very innovative music, solid sounds and soothing rhythms, later songs were nice instrumentals
Sonic Youth
3/5
Had some good songs, reminded me of a lot of the alternative albums of late 80’s/early 90’s
Derek & The Dominos
5/5
Guitar play is amazing. Didn’t realize one of the Allman brothers played with Clapton on this album. Great songs.
Beach House
2/5
It was okay. Lyrics and songs did not really move me. Singer has a good voice. Certainly not what I consider alternative music.
AC/DC
4/5
I know folks either love or hate Johnson’s voice, but you have to love a guitarist named Angus who always wears shorts when performing. One of their best albums with many hits. The electric guitar is crisp and simple with great percussion.
Roxy Music
2/5
Besides the horrible cover, the music is pretty mediocre. Songs don’t really so much nor have any great instrumentals.
Kelela
2/5
She has a nice voice. Lyrics were a bit much and trashy. Most songs sound the same and very repetitive words in songs.
Peter Gabriel
5/5
I forgot how many great songs are on this album. Gabriel’s voice and variety of songs come through strong. One of the great albums of all time.
The Beach Boys
4/5
Love The Beach Boys and their harmonies. The orchestra background was a nice touch. Sloop John B and Wouldn’t it Be Nice couple of my favorite songs of theirs.
Public Image Ltd.
1/5
PIL was much better in the 80’s/90’s. I think that I could pick up an electric, strum a few chords and sound as good as the guitar on this album. 70’s London post-punk is just not that great.
System Of A Down
1/5
Voice is okay even with the growling/roaring, but lyrics are horrible and language is a bit much. Guitar is actually not bad.
The Clash
3/5
I’m sure this was innovative punk sound for their time as you can see their influence on the US punk rock scene. They certainly have some strong opinions about the British government and society.
Eagles
4/5
Very solid album with many classic Eagle songs and some new ones that I had not previously heard, but really liked. Frey and Henley do such a great job sharing vocals. Guitar is great throughout the album.
Public Enemy
4/5
I wasn’t sure what to expect as I had not listened to this when it came out. It was blasted upon release. I don’t find near as offensive as portrayed back in the day. They had some good self reflection points related to the black community and were not afraid to call out some within their community, especially around fatherhood.
Herbie Hancock
4/5
I liked the horns, percussion, and keyboard on this album. It was soothing to listen to while I ran.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
2/5
Sounds are interesting and enjoyable. Major drawback is not being able to understand what he is singing about. It seems highly repetitive.
Sex Pistols
1/5
Yesterday, I wanted to know what the artist was saying in English, today I wish that I did not understand them. I thought it was hard to be on a level of bad like PIL, but they found it. Feel like it is all a show to them and they don’t know what they are really even against. I mean is Bodies a pro-life statement or what were they really trying to say.
Pretenders
3/5
Instrumentalist were very good. Very solid album, but still middle of the road.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Really liked this album a lot. The songs varied and Stevie’s voice is so good.
Deee-Lite
3/5
Singer has a good voice. I found the music and mix upbeat while not too repetitive. Good listening, despite not being really my style of music.
Air
2/5
Music was nice background, especially where they played actual instruments rather than synthesized keyboard.
Circle Jerks
2/5
Well if you don’t like a song just wait for the length of a commercial and you get something new. They had some okay stuff, but just sounded like a lot of complaining mostly. I appreciate it was over in less than 20 minutes, probably kept their studio costs down.
Dusty Springfield
4/5
Very pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this album. She has great pipes and the music is solid. She does not sound like a Brit.
Isaac Hayes
3/5
Nice horns, piano, and voice. The last song story telling could have been just a little shorter.
Fairport Convention
3/5
Sounded like listening to a pub band on certain songs, then plugged in for some electric, nice mix.
Ian Dury
1/5
Like listening to Brick Top from Snatch sing. Love the movie, but not a big fan of it as a music performer.
Primal Scream
3/5
Pleasantly surprised with this one. Liked the music style, his voice, and the guitar. Appreciated there was no screaming despite the name.
Talking Heads
3/5
Typical Talking Heads album, some songs really like and others just seem rather quirky. I have always liked the band overall and Byrne singing.
The Strokes
4/5
Really liked this band a lot. Great instruments and voice of lead singer. I am willing to give them a listen on some other albums.
Siouxsie And The Banshees
3/5
Decent sound, her voice is nice. Thankfully not as melancholy as some of their work, though couple of songs could have ended about three minutes sooner.
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
Percussion on this album was great. Echo is good, but this album is not their best.
Run-D.M.C.
5/5
This is the true start of rap right here. Their lyrics rhyme with ease, words are clever, relatable to all, not much language, and mixes are smooth and right on time.
CHIC
4/5
Loved this disco throw back. The horns, guitar, and vocals were great.
Led Zeppelin
3/5
Very solid album, though I think they have some better. Really liked the couple of blues type songs. You can tell they are going to be a great band.
The Flaming Lips
2/5
Singer’s voice sounded like a 13 going through puberty and was very shaky at best. When they started singing about spider bites and flying insects, they lost me.
Korn
1/5
First couple of songs, I was like this is going to be decent, then it went full trash with language and topics. First album that I have had to quit listening.
Curtis Mayfield
3/5
Having not seen the movie, the music itself was good and Mayfield can sing with a soulful voice. I liked the upbeat songs about getting out of the drug lifestyle and bettering oneself.
The Velvet Underground
3/5
Nice simple songs about relationships and religion. I thought Lou’s voice sounded decent on this album compared to his solo work.
Metallica
3/5
I’ve always thought Ulrich was an amazing drummer, guitar is insane, and Hetfield has a solid voice. I really enjoyed this album with symphonic sounds. It slowed the music down some and you could understand the words well. I appreciate that though they thrash there is some substance to the songs about psychotic struggles, fear of death, and things under your bed. If only it would have been about 45 minutes shorter.
Adele
3/5
Obviously she has a great voice and the piano songs were very good, but can she sing about something else besides just love or not being in love.
The Vines
4/5
Enjoyed this album, their sound varied and reminded me of several different bands. Nice guitar licks and good vocals.
Tori Amos
3/5
She certainly has a nice voice and can flat out play a piano. However, she clearly has been wounded by religion along with a rough life it seems in general. Just a little more positivity would be welcomed.
Neil Young
3/5
The instruments and sound are good. Neil’s voice is okay but get’s on my nerves at times.
Elvis Presley
4/5
Some very classic Elvis songs on this album. Really enjoyed the Ray Charles cover.
Deep Purple
3/5
Liked the guitar and percussion on this album. A lot better than I was kind of expecting.
Tim Buckley
2/5
I guess we know the limit of war and peace songs you can have one album, too many.
The Who
4/5
I did not know that Roger was so engaging with the crowd. His voice sounded good back then live. I always knew Peter was good on guitar but he really goes off live. Moon is great on percussion and bass is solid as well. Despite 17 minutes of My Generation, this is a very good live album. Magic bus was a great send off.
Meat Loaf
3/5
I liked the piano play with the rock. Songs were okay, not sure I would choose to listen to this full album again though.
Michael Kiwanuka
4/5
This album was great. He has a smooth voice and sound.
Antony and the Johnsons
2/5
Not a big fan of his voice, too much vibrato for me.
David Bowie
4/5
Pleasantly surprised by this Bowie album. I really enjoyed the more soul/r&b sound on this one. Nice cover of a Beatles song and soulful background vocals.
a-ha
3/5
Typical 80’s pop. Obviously Take On Me is a great song. Rest of album was similar sounding.
Eminem
2/5
Clearly he had a rough life and feels the need to hate so many people and things. He would say some positive things and then next sentence go back to hate and cussing.
The Prodigy
2/5
After a few songs this all kind of sounds the same. I guess it would be good rave dance music but that seems about it. It was decent to run to as I didn’t have to think about the few words and little meaning. Crab picture was cool.
The Human League
3/5
Interesting that their most famous and best song was last on the album. I am not a big fan of bands that only play synthesizers and no real instruments.
Leonard Cohen
3/5
Not really my favorite as the songs just didn’t speak to me or feel that relatable. I would have given 2 1/2 if could.
The Smiths
4/5
Love some Johnny Marr guitar and Morrisey’s voice. Probably one of my favorite albums of theirs. There is something about the British story telling that the Smiths produce that is very melodic.
The Smashing Pumpkins
3/5
I have always like their sound instrument wise, but they sure are lyrically depressing. I guess the album is aptly named.
The Isley Brothers
4/5
Could have done without the add on interview and song versions, however the main album section was very solid and relaxing music. Enjoyed the JT cover very much and had not heard it before. Definitely a very talented musical family.
Justin Timberlake
2/5
Felt like NSYNC version 2.0. I didn’t like that boy band and same holds true for this album.
Leonard Cohen
2/5
Painful, how did he get not one, two, but four albums in this list. There are plenty of other better albums than his.
Os Mutantes
4/5
Really enjoyed the album despite only understanding a few words. The sound varied and was very upbeat.
Janelle Monáe
4/5
Her voice is very good and she has a lot of range. Enjoyed the variety of music types on this album. The video for tightrope showed she can flat out dance as well.
David Bowie
3/5
It sort of went downhill after the first song, Changes. This album was just sort of ho hum. The previous Bowie album was much better.
2/5
Two in a row, I mean come on man. I think each album gets worse than the previous. I just find it hard to get behind a whole album about an alien rock star trying to save the planet.
CHVRCHES
4/5
I enjoyed this one a lot. I liked her voice and the music did not seem too over the top with electronics.
Tracy Chapman
4/5
She is a great song writer and vocalist. Certainly not afraid to tell her opinion on all sorts of social aspects.
Beck
4/5
Had not really listened to much Beck except the songs played on the radio. His mixture of style, voice, and music is top shelf.
The Doors
3/5
I enjoyed the bluesy songs and the three classics on this album. The Doors have their own sound that is for sure. Would have given this a 3.5 if I could.
Leonard Cohen
1/5
No better than the last Cohen album, still makes no sense and he should learn to play more than three cords.
Miles Davis
4/5
Really enjoyed this jazz and blues. This is great background music and very relaxing. They can all play incredibly well.
Saint Etienne
1/5
Why is this in the top 1001 songs. How do you call a replay of movie clips or tv clip a song. This was not enjoyable.
N.W.A.
2/5
It is sad that they have a good anti-drug message in some songs, but then have such other trashy songs and language.
Arcade Fire
4/5
I liked their sound and thought they had some good things to say.
Cocteau Twins
3/5
This was ho hum for me. I did not really enjoy the mixture of English and random other languages that happen to sound good in the song, but did not have an applicable meaning in English.
Christina Aguilera
3/5
Outside of the overly sexualized songs I liked the throwback sound on the album. She has a great voice.
The Beta Band
4/5
I liked the sound of this band. They had a almost late Beatles sound with an alternative edge.
Sade
2/5
Sade has a great and very distinctive voice. The sound and songs all seam very similar though. Clearly she has not had any even good relationships based on the sadness of the majority of her tunes.
Charles Mingus
3/5
It is decent background music, but it is no Miles Davis.
Neneh Cherry
2/5
Not my cup of tea. This was just bad pop late 80’s music.
Moby Grape
3/5
Despite not finding the full album anywhere, what I could find was pretty good. It sounded like the 60’s.
Elvis Costello
4/5
Costello has always had his own type of sound that is a nice mix of music styles. He has a way of telling stories in his songs as well.
Pulp
3/5
I am going to be kind and round up to 3 from 2.5, since they had a couple of songs that I liked. Some of their songs just seemed to make no sense though.
Bon Jovi
5/5
This is a great rock album. John has great vocals with solid guitar and drums. Best album that we have had in a while.
A Tribe Called Quest
2/5
I still don’t understand the need for the cussing and sexual overtones. They had some solid songs that did not include either, so they are very capable of it. I liked the jazz sound.
Fleet Foxes
4/5
An interesting album, they have a smooth and very melodic sound. It sounds folksy without being over the top.
Queen
3/5
The instruments were very crisp and sounded great. I thought Freddie’s voice on this album was not as strong as some other songs of theirs.
Arcade Fire
3/5
Like the last album from this band, it is okay but not a great album. I just don’t understand the stories or points they are trying to tell through their songs.
The Charlatans
4/5
I liked this band. I liked the sound and vocals. Reminded of other 90’s alternative music.
Amy Winehouse
4/5
I actually liked this album more than I thought. Her voice and this jazz like sound was really impressive.
Thundercat
1/5
Why is this on the list. I don’t like all the falsetto and who has a song that everyone wants to be a cat. I’m out.
Elton John
4/5
I think this is Elton’s best overall album. The piano is excellent and his voice is in its prime.
Supertramp
3/5
Typical 70’s British rock sound. Guitar was good but songs a little long and didn’t make a lot of sense.
Ministry
2/5
The positive is they are better than Korn, but that is about it.
Public Image Ltd.
1/5
The positive is they are better than Korn, but that is about it.
Judas Priest
4/5
I am giving this a 4. For this music genre, I could understand the words and the songs were not negative. Vocalist is good with solid guitar and drums.
Foo Fighters
4/5
Probably not their best album, but a really great start by Grohl back into the music scene. Some great songs on this first album.
Radiohead
4/5
First time I have listened to a full album of theirs. I like their sound overall. His voice does wear on me a little though.
Big Black
2/5
Why is this on the list, once again another trashy album that could be replaced with so much better music.
Count Basie & His Orchestra
4/5
Enjoyed this big band sound. The songs were short and different enough to keep the album interesting and a fun listen.
Abdullah Ibrahim
3/5
Well, the album was not available on Apple Music in the US, so could not listen to but one song that was found online. If an album is not available then how great can it really be. The one song that I heard was nice, so going with middle of the road rating.
Van Halen
4/5
You have to get past the sexism, as the guitar and drums are amazing. This is a solid album overall.
Johnny Cash
5/5
I appreciate that Cash took the time to go play for the prisoners at Folsom. Also he clearly picked the songs for his audience and even has a Shel Silverstein thrown in the mix. Cash could certainly play the audience even if it was in a prison.
The Icarus Line
2/5
Once again why? Why is this band and this album on this list? So many more better bands and albums than this dribble. I can’t understand half of their words and when I did wished that I had not.
Jane's Addiction
4/5
I have always liked Farrell’s voice and Navarro can flat out play. They were ahead of their time so giving them a bump in ratings to a 4.
Jean-Michel Jarre
1/5
This sounds like music from an amusement park ride for a space adventure. I don’t see why this should be on the list. I think that I could have played this on the keyboard.
Bob Dylan
3/5
A couple of songs were good and made some sense. A lot of these songs just seem to be rambling about nothing. At least you could understand most of Bob’s words on this album.
Jefferson Airplane
3/5
They have a couple of good songs on this album. It is typical late 60’s and early 70’s rock. It is average album.
Klaxons
3/5
The album was ok. I was not like I need to hear this before I die. It was neither bad nor great hence the score.
Sepultura
2/5
Still just not a big fan of this genre of music. This one was ok compared to most of these band types.
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
4/5
Amazing how good Neil sounds when not taking lead vocal. I enjoy the harmonies on the album. Some real classics on this one.
Frank Zappa
3/5
This was surprising, at least good background music. The instruments were well played.
Jorge Ben Jor
4/5
While I could not understand any of the Portuguese, I liked the sound and his voice. I just made up the meaning in my head.
2Pac
2/5
This album is way too long for gangsta rap. Maybe 2Pac would not be dead and stuck in the lifestyle if he had laid off the weed that was in every other song. Perhaps he could have focused more to live a better life. The language is obviously bad through out, but he did have a couple of decent songs, especially one about his mother.
Emmylou Harris
4/5
I have always thought Emmylou had a great voice. This is classic country and was a positive change from yesterday.
The Velvet Underground
2/5
This was worse than their first one we listened to. The last song should have never been made. I see why the engineer on the song left to get coffee during the recording.
Johnny Cash
5/5
One of Cash’s best albums as it included his own songs and covers other greats. His aging voice comes through with amazing clarity and strength on this album. This album showcases how Cash reinvented his musical ability over time and evolved as he aged.
Nina Simone
3/5
Started off strong and enjoyable, then her voice turned on me and I dropped to more of a it’s ok.
Can
2/5
Why, why I ask is this album on the list. It is not offensive but also not really good either.
Def Leppard
3/5
Quintessential 80’s hair band rock. If you can get past the strong sexual overtones then there are a couple of their big hits on this album. I’ve not been a huge DL fan, so it’s middle of the road for me.
Jethro Tull
3/5
I liked the flute and guitar, though some songs sounded very similar. There is nothing that blew me away on this album but it is nice background music.
Iron Maiden
4/5
I liked this more than I thought and they are not heavy metal as I think of it. I was surprised their songs had some deeper topics and positive points.
Buena Vista Social Club
4/5
I love the sound and beats of this musical group. Really glad they got their music outside of Cuba.
Turbonegro
1/5
This band is garbage. Their songs are beyond the pale. Once again why is this on this list.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
4/5
While this album is not Tom’s best, it is a still a very solid debut album from his band. The band has some great songs on this one.
The Triffids
2/5
I would say this band is just ho hum, not great, but not offensive, just middle of the road pop music for the 80’s.
Yes
3/5
Yes has their own distinctive sound as this album illustrates. I enjoyed it.
Cat Stevens
3/5
Songs were short and nice melodies. Probably would not listen to it again though.
Beatles
4/5
Not my favorite Beatles album, but still has a lot of great songs on it. It is certainly a mix of styles of music. They do have some songs on the white album that could have been omitted.
The Doors
4/5
Typically I am not a huge Doors fan, but I enjoyed this one. The blues, keyboard, and lyrics were really good.
Supergrass
3/5
Decent music, the variety of instruments and tempo was easy listening. Still not sure this is good enough to need to hear before I die though.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
I had never listened to a full album by the Stones. I now know why. It is just middle of the road and nothing is super exciting for me.
Elliott Smith
4/5
I enjoyed this album. I thought there was variety and the various instruments were great. He has a great voice.
Jamiroquai
3/5
There were some nice grooves on this album. However, some were also too long. It was middle of the road but good background.
CHIC
3/5
I liked Good Times and then it all sounded very similar after that. It was not bad, instruments were well played. Album just sounded almost like one long run on song.
George Michael
4/5
I had only heard Michael’s songs played on the radio. This album was very good. He has a great voice. The music styles varied and he sang about some real life issues.
Sigur Rós
3/5
The instruments were good, but the songs too long. I felt like it was a soundtrack to Close Encounters or an outer space movie.
Radiohead
3/5
This was just ok for me. It was hard to understand the vocals on some songs , though instrument play was good. Almost felt like flashback to early 70’s music on some songs.
1/5
Hard to believe people paid to listen to this album. I am curious how many folks have bought this recording. It should not be on this list. I can record nature songs and strum some strings on electric to no beat.
Chicago
3/5
When they sang the songs were good and enjoyable. The 15 minute jam session to end the album and 8 minute long songs were a bit much and could have been made a little shorter.
The Byrds
3/5
Not the Byrds that I had heard before. The country sound was definitely different for them. It was not bad and have certainly heard worse on this list.
Marty Robbins
4/5
Enjoyed this western country album. El Paso is such a classic. I did not realize there were so many songs about being killed by a stampede of cattle.
Sufjan Stevens
3/5
The album had variety, but was just a bit too long. Not sure it should be on this list as it was just okay.
Talk Talk
3/5
Typical 80’s and early 90’s rock. They were an average band and album. Not sure why they were on this list.
The Band
3/5
Another ho hum middle of the road album on the list of albums I need to listen to before I die. Give me something good for once.
Manu Chao
3/5
I liked the street recorded sounds and they fit in well with the songs. I could not understand that much because of the language difference. I did like the music and his voice for much of the album. I probably would not seek this again to listen, though it was better than most albums for sure. Gets a 3, but really a 3.5 if I could.
Leonard Cohen
3/5
Surprisingly better than the others we have heard from Cohen. Can’t decide if I like the soft spoken/singing on this album. It is a somber album from a man closing out his life and retrospective, which was nice to listen into.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
Really solid album from Marley. Enjoyed the sound and vocals. Very enjoyable listen top to bottom.
John Grant
3/5
Not even sure where to start on this one. First why is it on this list, it cannot be top 1,001. It was not bad, but Grant is all over the place and I can’t tell if it is satire or serious. It is middle of road as there have certainly been worse on this list.
The Only Ones
2/5
The instruments were fine in this album, but this guy’s voice was rough. Another one of those albums of why is this on the list.
The Slits
1/5
This was horrible. They killed a great Marvin Gaye song. I’m done with the English early punk rockers on this list.
Arcade Fire
3/5
Once again another ho-hum album on the list. Nothing too exciting or terrible.
Steely Dan
4/5
Great album, enjoyed the various instruments and jazz/R&B sounds on the album. Amazed to learn that outside of the two main band members, they basically auditioned players for each song on their albums.
Crosby, Stills & Nash
4/5
Enjoyed the harmony and lack of Neil Young.
Beastie Boys
5/5
So this album has a lot of nostalgia for me. Cosart and I listened to this on repeat driving from NC to Maine. Yes it is belittling to women though I think some is tongue in cheek. However, their rhymes are on time and clever. It is still a great album and was ahead of its time for hip hop.
Elastica
3/5
Instruments were okay, nothing exciting, just another okay album.
Ray Charles
5/5
Great album, the soul R&B from Charles’ voice along with the big band sound were amazing.
Al Green
4/5
I enjoyed this album. If it had not followed Ray Charles’ album, then would have been a 5.
Morrissey
4/5
He has such a distinctive and great singing voice. He makes you want to listen to him sing about even sad things.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
4/5
I enjoyed this one from the Chilis. The guitars sounded great. I liked the bass being so prominent.
Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart
2/5
I could write better lyrics than this. It is a slight up tick from PIL, but that is not saying much. Not sure why this is on the list.
AC/DC
4/5
There is something about these Australian hard rockers that I just like. I know the songs are pretty similar. Amazed at how much Johnson sounds like Scott did before his passing. I like a guitarist who wears shorts while playing.
Prince
3/5
First three songs were classics, then things headed south. Could have shortened majority of the songs, not to mention the trashy lyrics for lot of the album.
Arrested Development
4/5
I forgot how much I really love this album. I wore it out when I purchased the tape back in the day. I find the positive words and thoughts uplifting, especially compared to other hip hop during the day.
Slipknot
1/5
I just don’t like the growling vocals music genre. The one song where the lead singer actually sang was not that bad. This album is certainly dark, though we have had worse.
Nirvana
4/5
Listening to some of these songs now, you can almost hear the foretelling of what is to come for Cobain sadly. I still like the majority of the album as the drums and guitar are great.
Steely Dan
3/5
Solid album with good guitar and some biting lyrics.
Prince
3/5
Much better than the last Prince album. The variety and less smutty songs, ignoring Nikki, made this one more enjoyable.
Queens of the Stone Age
3/5
Not that this album was horrible, but why is this in the best of all time. It just sounds like a demo tape from someone who learned to play a few cords in the electric.
Alice Cooper
4/5
I had never listened to Cooper before. I enjoyed it. It had variety of song types, voice is good, and some solid instrumental. I took some of the songs as very tongue in cheek.
My Bloody Valentine
2/5
Shoegaze is not my fave. The lack of real words and lyrics is frustrating along with the distorted instrument play. Glad the album was pretty short.
Björk
3/5
She has a great voice, though the child voice on certain songs was not necessary. I enjoyed the variety on the album.
Alanis Morissette
3/5
I am going to give it a 3. There are a lot of top hits on here, but her vibe is just kind of depressing to me.
Roxy Music
2/5
This was certainly early 70’s music and not the better kind. Just question why this was on the list.
David Ackles
2/5
Felt like Leonard Cohen telling stories to a piano instead of guitar. It is ok, just no so much my preference.
The Jesus And Mary Chain
3/5
So much better than the last shoe gazing band. At least I could understand the words and the reverb was not over bearing. I was not a huge fan of Jesus and Mary Chain though they were big in the alt scene of 80’s.
Stan Getz
4/5
I liked the vibe of this album. The sax and soft guitar were easy listening. Crazy they recorded this in two days and his wife had never sang before this recording.
Ramones
4/5
I appreciated it was a short album. I enjoyed the punk instrumentals and they clearly helped start the punk phase. It did feel a little repetitive at times but enjoyed it.
Public Enemy
4/5
Compared to their first album, I enjoyed this one. They had some insightful lyrics and good rhythms/samples. I appreciated also that they were not swearing every other word.
Astor Piazzolla
4/5
This was quite enjoyable. The musicians are very talented and the instruments seemed to flow together.
k.d. lang
3/5
She has a nice voice. The style is just not my vibe and would likely not choose to listen to it again hence the three.
The Flaming Lips
3/5
I found this one more tolerable than the other album of theirs. I still would not seek out to listen to this again but I did not dislike it. Instruments were well played, but vocals are meh.
Hugh Masekela
4/5
I enjoyed this jazz album. While the songs kind of blend after a bit, I did feel like this one had more variety than most. The piano was a nice touch and the tempo felt upbeat.
Sleater-Kinney
3/5
This band is okay. Nothing too spectacular from my perspective. The vocals were not that strong.
T. Rex
3/5
The instrument play was strong as well as the vocals. The lyrics did not make a lot of sense to me, hence the 3.
Ray Charles
5/5
Loved this album! The jazzy remakes of classics of Hank Williams and Everly Brothers were quite impressive. The instruments and backup vocals were also spot on.
Pixies
3/5
I like the Pixies sound but could never just get full on the Pixie band wagon for some reason. This was a solid album but not great.
Soundgarden
5/5
One of my favorite Soundgarden albums. Cornell had such a recognizable and great voice.
Mercury Rev
3/5
This was background music at best. I don’t understand songs seeming to end, then having random sounds for two more minutes. I would certainly not seek this album to listen again.
1/5
This should not be on this list. I did not enjoy being cussed at for an hour plus. Who has a ten minute “song” of someone talking about nothing and laughing.
Dagmar Krause
2/5
This is definitely very German. She has a decent voice but not sure this belongs on this list.
The Avalanches
3/5
I thought this album was not bad. It was nice background music. I enjoyed the variety of mixes in the music.
Sister Sledge
3/5
I liked this better than the Chic albums. Very good vocals.
John Lennon
2/5
Clearly the Beatles made him better. He comes across as very self promoting and absorbed on this album.
Metallica
4/5
I think that I just have to be in a certain mood to listen to Metallica. I am impressed by their ability to play metal and slow when they want and sound good at both. They are beginning to grow on me and if this genre have become the one metal band that I enjoy.
New Order
4/5
Enjoyed this album, I’ve always liked this style of alternative music.
The Band
3/5
The guitar and piano were very good on this album. I found the lyrics a little all over the place though.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
I’m normally not a big Stones fan. However, I enjoyed this album except for maybe a couple of songs. It had good variety and you could understand Mick well. Solid album.
John Martyn
2/5
Not sure why this album is on the list. It just did very little for me. This guy sure loved some jelly.
JAY Z
1/5
Jay Z seems to hype himself via cussing like crazy and doesn’t seem to really say much of value. Didn’t think I would hear myself saying I long for Public Enemy compared to this.
Ghostface Killah
1/5
I don’t like this genre nor the language. He can’t carry a tune when trying to actually sing.
Beastie Boys
4/5
I don’t recall listening to this album as much as some others, but it is classic Beasties. The rhymes are solid and clever.
David Bowie
3/5
I’m just not huge fan of these concept and character albums of Bowie. It had a couple of good songs on it, hence the 3.
The Stooges
2/5
First two songs were ok, then it went downhill with song that was 25% of whole album length and mad no sense.
Funkadelic
2/5
Sounded all the same.
Minor Threat
2/5
Sounded all the same and hard to understand the lyrics. Just not my style of music.
DJ Shadow
3/5
This was enjoyable background music, especially for a drive. Appreciated that the mixes were more music than vocal.
The White Stripes
3/5
Liked this album more than the others. Songs were better quality overall.
Pink Floyd
4/5
I’m not a huge fan of these rock opera or concept albums. However, there are some great songs on this album, so I am going with a 4.
The Mothers Of Invention
2/5
Well this album is what you get when you let someone high on drugs record. The positive is that the album was not offensive. This should not be on this list.
Dolly Parton
4/5
Harmonies were solid. Enjoyed this album’s classic country sounds.
3/5
I thought the instruments were very good. It was solid background music. Some of the songs could have been shortened just a little.
4/5
Did not sound much like the Kinks, hence I enjoyed this album more than normal. The guitar and drums were good. I enjoyed the British history lessons and perspective on the album.
The White Stripes
4/5
I liked this one better than the other albums of theirs. They had some good songs on here so I’m being generous and rounding up to a 4.
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
I am not a huge Springsteen fan and this one did not really change my mind. I think he is better rock than suedo country. It was okay, but a lot of the songs sounded very similar with the same story lines.
The Coral
3/5
I felt like this album started pretty strong, but then it just kind of existed until the end. I thought the vocals and harmonies were nice. I think this album is middle of the road.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
3/5
Neil Young is just ok and preferred him more with CSNY. A couple of good songs on the album though, hence the upgrade to a 3.
Rush
4/5
I had not listened to a full Rush album before now. I really enjoyed it. The instruments were all spot on. Percussion was amazing.
Orbital
2/5
One hour and six minutes of background music. Thankfully there was no vulgar language, but come on why is this on the list.
David Crosby
3/5
Crosby was decent, just not a wow. I think him and the rest on CSNY were all better together than solo.
Doves
4/5
The album could have been a little shorter in spots, but I liked their sound and vocals. The music had some variety and was solid.
The War On Drugs
3/5
Middle of the road album, sounded like 80’s which is not a bad thing. Also vocalist sounds like a more coherent Bob Dylan.
Elliott Smith
4/5
I rather liked this album with its melancholy sound and vibe. He had a soothing voice.
American Music Club
2/5
It not being on Apple Music is a pain. They sound okay but so do a lot of other bands not on this list. Another one of those bands that I question why they are on here.
Pink Floyd
5/5
This has always been one of my favorite Floyd albums despite some songs being long and the album only being five songs. It is solid in each song.
Jane's Addiction
3/5
About half of the album is real good. The other half is ok. I like the guitar on this album. There first album is better.
The Who
3/5
The album was way too long. The music was good, though they did sound more like the Beatles than Who at times.
Parliament
3/5
It was ok. Sounded the same throughout the album and some songs were just way too long. Give up the Funk clearly best song and most known.
Pulp
3/5
Still sounds a bit like Bowie. They are ok, but the album is still too long.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
Really enjoyed this album. The album varied in style and topics. One of his best albums.
Fiona Apple
2/5
Sounded about like an album recorded in someone’s apartment. I get she has some anger and depression issues, but a whole album of sounding angry and whining is not good.
James Brown
4/5
Liked the live album and interaction with the crowd was solid. James is an entertainer and this being a live album helped that shine through.
The Black Crowes
4/5
Yes, it is early 90’s garage band music, but I have always enjoyed their sound. This album has a lot of their hits on it.
Hüsker Dü
3/5
This was middle of the road. It was not bad but not great either. The album length could have been a little shorter.
Lambchop
2/5
This was a bad album. His voice is bad and sounded like a TV skit song most of the album. Shouldn’t have been on this list.
Iron Butterfly
3/5
Compared to the last few days this album at least had a good beat and vocals. Obviously the title song is most recognized though a bit long for sure.
Prince
3/5
Out of the three Prince albums this is the best on the list, which is not saying a whole lot. He has some good songs here, but a lot our just overkill on the sex language.
Bob Dylan
4/5
I enjoyed this Dylan album the most of his albums on this list to date. Interesting that he ended most with a harmonica play.
Heaven 17
2/5
This album should not be on this list. Lost me at first song. Don’t need a bunch of Brits lecturing about US politics and redefining the word facist.
Billy Bragg
2/5
Literally another Brit critiquing the US, two in a row. This album was ho hum at best.
PJ Harvey
3/5
This was ok, nothing too great. Certainly had alt 90’s vibe.
Lorde
3/5
She has a good voice and felt like the album was ok and better than I was anticipating.
De La Soul
2/5
Album was ok until about half when thru, then it headed south. Not my style and language was too potty.
Pet Shop Boys
3/5
Pet Shop is usually good for two to three songs per album. This album holds true to that. They are middle of the road with a lot of synthesizers.
Killing Joke
3/5
They had some interesting sounds. Once again another album that was not great and question why it is on the list. It is ok.
Black Sabbath
4/5
I have not actually listened to any of their albums before now. I really enjoyed this album. The guitar, the drums, and Ozzy’s vocals were very good. Their songs have some actual meaning, sorry I did not give them a chance previously.
Sarah Vaughan
5/5
Solid 5, her vocals are amazing she performs well live. Album had a great feel to it.
Coldplay
4/5
For a debut album and reading about how it was made, you can certainly tell there was a change half way through the album at Yellow. Second half of album was more enjoyable. Very solid album overall.
Marilyn Manson
1/5
Why, why, why do I need to listen to this period, much less before I die. Marilyn clearly has some issues and needs some help. Only positive is his percussionist.
Various Artists
5/5
Great Christmas album and vocals are wonderful.
Super Furry Animals
2/5
This just sounded like random sounds. I am surprised that these albums sold.
Pixies
3/5
For a debut album it is good. It is definitely garage band sound and the beginning of the alternative music that I grew up with. I do think they have better music than this album though, hence the rating.
Curtis Mayfield
3/5
I liked the overall vibe of the album, but the falsetto got old after a song or two. Otherwise this would have been a 4.
Hole
4/5
I enjoyed this album a lot more than I expected. I thought the instruments were well played and Love’s voice/lyrics were solid.
Paul Revere & The Raiders
4/5
They remind me of The Beach Boys, Monkees, and Everly Brothers; so of course I liked this album. Nice melodies and solid instrumental play.
The Darkness
2/5
I thought this album was a joke until I realized the joke was on this having to listen to it. This album was not enjoyable at all.
MGMT
3/5
It was a middle of the road album. They are not bad, but not great either.
Nick Drake
3/5
Sounded like most early 70’s rock. Good guitar, good voice, and somber lyrics.
Paul Simon
4/5
First full album of Simon that I have listened to. Really enjoy the variety, lyrics, and Paul’s voice.
SZA
1/5
Only positive was her voice, unfortunately how she used it was trash.
Traffic
3/5
I have always enjoyed Steve Winwood’s voice. Overall this sounded like early 70’s music. Feelin alright most recognizable song of course. It was decent.
Metallica
5/5
I should have given Metallica a try before now. This album was so good. Lars’ percussion is amazing. The technical skill of all the band members is amazing.
U2
5/5
I forgot how many great songs existed on this album. 40 has always been one of my favorites from U2 and such a nice take on a psalm. Felt like this was the beginning on Edge coming into his own with the guitar.
Frank Ocean
2/5
Don’t understand why this is on the list. There have certainly been worse but this is also not a good listen. It is not memorable in the least.
Ryan Adams
3/5
Started well for me, then songs sounded pretty similar. Album is too long. He has good voice.
The Bees
3/5
This album was okay. Nothing really bad on it, but also not much blew me away either.
King Crimson
2/5
It was late 60/early 70 Brit prog rock for sure. Just had a hard time enjoying this one.
The Doors
4/5
I enjoyed this one better than the other Doors’ albums that we’ve heard. Could have done without the long last song, but overall solid album.
Kraftwerk
2/5
Ok background music, but don’t speak German, so giving a 2. Not sure why this is on the list.
Madonna
4/5
I thought she sounded good vocally on this album. The album had a different vibe from some of her other works. While the songs sounded very similar they were enjoyable.
The Go-Go's
4/5
I’ve always like the Go-Go’s played on the radio and Carlisle’s voice. This is the first complete album of theirs that I listened to and rather enjoyed it.
Iron Maiden
3/5
Good first album. The instruments were solid. Couple of songs were a bit long.
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Despite the length, I am going to go with a 4. Overall, I enjoyed the variety. The guitar, drums, and Plant’s voice were spot on. If the album were about 20 minutes shorter then would be a 5.
Air
3/5
I liked this album better than the other album of theirs we listened to. It was soothing and had some good rhythms.
Blondie
4/5
I really enjoyed this album all around. It had variety and her voice was good. Excellent listen.
Adam & The Ants
2/5
Not a fan. Plenty of better albums out there to be listened to.
Muddy Waters
4/5
I have not listened to many full blues albums. However, I do enjoy the genre. Muddy is one of the best in this music group. Liked the album a lot.
The Killers
5/5
First album of theirs that I listened to. Remind me of 80/early 90’s alt music when alt actually sounded different than just rock/pop. Vocals, guitar and percussion all very well done.
The Cramps
2/5
This album should not be on this list. I think anyone with a keyboard could come up with this type of music.
Alice Cooper
3/5
Not a bad album, Cooper’s levity is enjoyable and because of the short album length does not get old. I would give it a 3.5 if I could.
Everything But The Girl
2/5
This should not be on the list. Every song sounded the same. It was rather monotonous and nothing inspiring.
Neil Young
3/5
Better than some of the other Neil Young solo albums. Still just not a big fan of his. He had a couple of good songs on here.
Simon & Garfunkel
3/5
Easy listening and nice short album. They have great harmony with the nice acoustic guitar. However, it doesn’t make me want to seek it out to listen to it again.
Sonic Youth
3/5
It was better than the other Sonic Youth albums that we have listened to this far. It was good early alternative music.
Japan
2/5
Why does a British band name itself Japan, that’s my first issue with this album. It all sounds the same and I am sure there are better albums that should be on this list.
The Pharcyde
2/5
Wow, they made the last Public Enemy album sound like a great hip hop album. This was not my cup of tea.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
5/5
A great title to start, this album had variety and solid tunes top to bottom. I have never listened to a CCR album before, however this one rocked it.
The Stone Roses
4/5
I am feeling generous, there is something about this album that makes me think of 60’s Beatles type music. It does sound similar at times but they have a nice sound.
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
4/5
This is old school with some of the originals of country music. Doc Watson, Maybelle Carter-Cash’s mother in law), Autry. Yea it should have been 2 albums.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
4/5
I really liked this CCR album as well. It was not quite as good as Cosmo’s, but certainly a solid 4. I enjoy John’s vocals and the instruments are great.
Depeche Mode
4/5
Overall a solid album with several top hits. They make the electronic sound enjoyable.
Earth, Wind & Fire
4/5
I liked the majority of this album. It had some variety and a couple of classic funk and R&B songs.
Aretha Franklin
5/5
Aretha has some pipes that is for sure. I enjoyed the variety of tempos, piano, percussion, and horns on this album. A solid listen.
Electric Light Orchestra
3/5
It wasn’t bad but not great either. Over an hour is too much as the music kind of sounded the same after a while. Couple of good songs tucked away on it.
G. Love & Special Sauce
3/5
I am going a 3, but would say more like 3.5. Could have been 4, if had limited the album to the 9-10 good songs on the long album. The basketball song was solid.
Small Faces
2/5
Why, why. Half your album is the last talky song. Should not be on this list.
Nirvana
5/5
One of my favorite live an unplugged albums of all time. A totally different side of Nirvana that showed off their abilities without the grunge loudness.
Beatles
5/5
Still one of my all time favorite Beatles’ albums. From top to bottom it has variety of music type, instruments, and some classics by Harrison. They certainly went out on a high note.
Yes
4/5
I am going to round up to a 4. The guitar and keyboard were pretty impressive on this album. I find Jon Anderson’s voice a little much sometimes but it was ok on this album.
Finley Quaye
2/5
Once again another UK artist that should not be on this list. A Scottish Rasta man, no thanks. Give me Marley for this style of music.
Ice Cube
2/5
The non explicit version was a little more bearable. Still the degrading of women was over the top.
Santana
5/5
The guitar and percussion were pretty amazing on this album. I rather enjoyed the instrumentals in the album.
Coldplay
5/5
So many good songs on this album, plus the interplay of piano and electric is different than most music, thus making it a joy to listen to.
The National
3/5
Overall I thought this album was decent. It did not blow me away but did have some decent songs in it.
Method Man
2/5
Not my style and the language just wears on me.
The Good, The Bad & The Queen
3/5
It was average, so being generous with a 3. Just nothing too exciting on this album.
Pink Floyd
5/5
One of my favorite Floyd albums. This is one of the first albums that I recall someone using recorded sounds within the music. Floyd does it so well with nice tie ins to the song. This album reminds me of the only live show of theirs I got to see, which opened with Time. The stage was black with just Nick’s glowing drum sticks opening the song flying around in the air with clocks ticking in the background.
Norah Jones
5/5
She has such a smooth and jazzy voice. Could have used maybe a little variety, but overall a great listen. Would listen to it again for sure.
Dr. Octagon
1/5
This should be on no one’s list, much less this one. Horrible.
Joy Division
3/5
This album was decent, but kind of sad knowing the story after the album was made.
Television
3/5
It started strong and I was like maybe the overall review was right. However the longer the album went it just became more middle of the road. I would give 3.5 if I could.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
Normally not a big Stones fan, but I found this pretty solid and enjoyable.
Fleetwood Mac
3/5
This was ok, but nothing really blew my socks off.
Eagles
4/5
Enjoy this album as it had variety and they are a good listen. Some of their best on this album.
Bonnie "Prince" Billy
3/5
I thought it started strong, then about a third the way in it sounded the same. Not bad, but likely would not seek it out to listen again.
Billy Joel
5/5
Forgot how great this album. It’s like every song is awesome. Italian restaurant, Stranger, Moving Out, Always a Woman some of my favorites of Joel’s.
The Offspring
4/5
I do think they are growing on me. They certainly have a deeper meaning on a lot of their songs than originally thought.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
4/5
I have always enjoyed Elvis. This album has his usual sound and songs that poke fun at various things in life.
Haircut 100
3/5
This was ok, but way too long of an album for the same sounded song over and over.
Culture Club
3/5
Nice and short which I appreciated. I would say half of it was pretty good.
Coldcut
2/5
I agree what is that noise and why is this on the list. It is way too long and there are plenty of better albums out there. It was no offensive, but also not something I’ll listen to again.
The Cure
5/5
I have always thought this was their best complete album. They have some happier songs in this album compared to some of the earlier albums as well. I will say the concert for this tour was great.
Van Halen
5/5
The guitar by Eddie is amazing on this first VH album. While it could have had a little better song lyrics, it still has enough great songs on it to get a 5.
Suede
2/5
Why why on this list? This album was about 50 minutes too long.
Radiohead
3/5
I liked Bends better than this one. It would be a 3.5 for me, so rounding down. Songs sounded pretty similar throughout, not bad just not great.
The Police
3/5
You can tell they are starting to gel a hit better as a band on this album. Still not in my top three Police albums. It is just ok.
OutKast
1/5
Still not a fan of this type of degrading music. Painful to listen to, especially for over an hour.
Joy Division
2/5
Album is just overhyped to me based on the review. It was okay but not great and nothing memorable.
Led Zeppelin
5/5
What a solid album throughout its entirety. It just kept getting better. The instruments and Paige were humming on this album.
The Dandy Warhols
2/5
The last two songs moved this to a solid 2, if there was any doubt. This album was ho hum and lasted way too long.
Dirty Projectors
2/5
Voices were ok, but the songs sounded like someone just threw together random words with no meaning.
Dr. Dre
1/5
I just don’t get this genre still. Not a fan.
Sly & The Family Stone
3/5
I thought this was better than some others that we have had from this genre. The 15 minute instrumental was a bit too long though.
Johnny Cash
5/5
What a great live album. The banter and songs with the crowd were amazing. The fact he wrote a song just for them is amazing as well. I liked Folsom better but this was still very solid.
Cornershop
2/5
If I were in a better mood this might have gotten a 3, but then I thought this list should be much better than this album and they ruined a great Beatle’s song on the last track, so a 2.
Steely Dan
4/5
While I do think the songs sound fairly similar. I find the instrument play is very good. I don’t fully understand some of the early 70’s lingo. Going to round up from 3.5 to 4.
T. Rex
4/5
I am going to round up from a 3.5 to a 4. While I didn’t enjoy every song, I did enjoy the majority and there are a couple of classics on this album. The band seems out of the norm for early 70’s.
The Pogues
3/5
I like the musical abilities of the band. Their lyrics are a bit all over the place though. This album could have been a wee bit shorter.
Ali Farka Touré
3/5
Music was nice and would likely give a four if could understand the words, so going with a solid 3.
Sisters Of Mercy
3/5
This album was ok, but not sure why it is on this list. Not quite as drab and goth as the write up made it sound.
Rod Stewart
3/5
I am going to go with 3, but really more like a 3.5. I thought for Rod that he sounded pretty decent.
Black Sabbath
4/5
I rather enjoyed this album despite them apparently high on cocaine. The change in song styles and tempos was well done.
The Black Keys
5/5
I liked this album a lot. I had not really listened to much from these guys. They have a nice mix of guitar, percussion, and blues.
Mariah Carey
2/5
Every song sounds the same, yes she can sing but that was about it for the album.
The Auteurs
3/5
This band was decent. They had a good sound.
Paul Simon
5/5
I really enjoyed the harmonies and rhythms on this album. The stories were well told. Great album.
Big Brother & The Holding Company
4/5
I enjoyed this album more than I thought that I would. I know Joplin’s voice is a bit much for some, but I like it. Guitar was pretty good overall.
Green Day
5/5
The idea that they created a theme album when no one else was doing it was impressive, especially for a band like them. This album is well done from start to finish.
Keith Jarrett
4/5
I enjoyed this album. The play varied and the crowd was in to it, which made it more interesting.
The Lemonheads
3/5
Ms Robinson is a nice cover. The rest of the album is ok, but nothing great. Hence the middle of the road score of 3.
Venom
1/5
This album was horrible unless you were a satanist, I guess.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
5/5
I never thought I would finish an album on here and go that is all. The album was finished and I thought there must be more. It made me want more songs from these guys. This was a great one.
Nas
3/5
I am going middle of the road here. For this genre I found it better than most.
Harry Nilsson
4/5
Pleasantly surprised as I had no idea that this guy sang some of these songs. Overall a great album from top to bottom.
Talking Heads
3/5
This was ok, like most Heads albums I really enjoy 3 or 4 songs with the rest sounded very similar.
The Stooges
3/5
It is ok, nothing really spectacular on here. Guitar sounded pretty good. Positive is the album is short.
Otis Redding
4/5
Otis has a great voice and soul to his singing. Enjoyed the covers and the horns were excellent.
Beastie Boys
4/5
Not my most favorite Beastie album, but still some good rhymes on here and a bit of new style for the guys.
Grizzly Bear
2/5
This should not be on this list. Guitar sounds rough at times and voice is weak. Not a fan.
3/5
Compared to yesterday’s album this one gets a 3. The parody on the album is good for a few songs but then gets a bit old.
The Magnetic Fields
2/5
I’m not wasting 3 hours listening to ho hum love songs. It was decent music but waaaaay tooo long.
Stan Getz
5/5
Enjoyed the music sets and variety.
A Tribe Called Quest
3/5
This album was better than their other album that we listened to. I enjoyed this one. It had nice variety, no over the top language, and nice samples.
Death In Vegas
2/5
This style of music is just not my jam. It all sounds the same.
The Dictators
3/5
Guitar sounded good. They sounded like 70’s rock.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4/5
I am feeling generous and liked the piano with his voice. I am going with a 4.
Michael Jackson
5/5
Great album with some variety and strong vocals by Michael. The number of solid songs in this album is amazing.
Gorillaz
2/5
This is not top 1,000. Sounds like an elementary group singing when there was singing.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
4/5
I enjoyed the rhythm and harmonies on this album.
Tears For Fears
5/5
Enjoyed and wore this album out when I bought it. I am going with a 5, rounding up from 4.5.
The Beach Boys
4/5
I have always enjoyed the Beach Boy sound and harmonies.
Songhoy Blues
4/5
I liked the sound and harmony though I couldn’t understand them.
Janis Joplin
3/5
She has some good songs on here and some not so good.
GZA
2/5
Don’t understand this style of music still.
B.B. King
4/5
I’ve enjoyed BB’s blues in the past and this early BB is even better. The live jam session was impressive.
Lou Reed
3/5
This was middle of the road for me. I was braced for a weaker sound, but the album was good sound and understandable.
Bob Dylan
4/5
I enjoyed this album a lot and felt it had some good variety for Dillon.
Booker T. & The MG's
4/5
Recognized some of these songs from other artist covers. Didn’t realize they had originally performed them. Very enjoyable listen.
The Style Council
2/5
The instruments started out well, then they opened their mouth to sing and rap. Would have been better if just played instruments with no words.
Femi Kuti
3/5
I liked the music. However the songs and album could have been a bit shorter. It dragged on.
Sparks
2/5
Another one of those albums that make me question why is this on the list. This album just sounds rough and like a middle school group put it together.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
I’ll give it a solid 4. Enjoyed the variety of songs. I think this is his best album.
5/5
This is still my favorite U2 album of all time. This put them on the map of beat bands ever.
John Prine
3/5
I am being generous with a 3. The Dylan comparison is overstated as he is no Bob, nowhere near the same league.
Kate Bush
3/5
The album started strong with Running Up, then it sounded very similar until the end. It was a bit too long and did not really enjoy the voice manipulation on later songs.
Aretha Franklin
5/5
Great album. It showed off Aretha’s pipes on some soulful songs.
Cream
4/5
Instrument play of course was great. It was the late 60’s so lyrically it was a bit different. Going to round up as they had a couple of great songs on here.
R.E.M.
5/5
One of my favorite REM albums as Michael could finally be understood more and the instrument play became more sharp with some great riffs and drum play.
Liz Phair
2/5
This started out ok as she kind of reminded me of like Edie Brickell a little, then it went off the rails hence the score.
Tom Tom Club
2/5
Another album that I ask why is this on the list. Sounds like any early 80’s pop band. Not a fan.
Quicksilver Messenger Service
3/5
This was not great but not bad for me either. I thought they could play their instruments well and the covers were good.
Kendrick Lamar
3/5
This album was better than I expected. I appreciated that it did not have overkill of cussing and womanizing. I appreciated that he talked about faith and getting out of the bad situations in Compton without being a drug lord.
Michael Jackson
4/5
I enjoyed the variety on this album. I still think Michael’s talent as an entertainer was ahead of his time.
Black Flag
3/5
Thought the guitar sounded good. Surprisingly they had some good songs and themes.
Anita Baker
3/5
She has a great voice but the songs all kind of sound the same.
Tim Buckley
2/5
Why is this on the list? 6 songs and 45 minutes, a 12 minute song that repeats a lot of the same words over and over. Ugh.
Brian Eno
3/5
I thought this was ok, but still not sure why it’s own this list.
The Byrds
3/5
Sounded like late 60’s typical folk music. Not bad, but not great
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
1/5
This is not even music. Should not be on this list and you cannot even find it on Apple Music.
Black Sabbath
4/5
A nice tribute after Ozzy’s passing. Despite some of the evil references, overall the sound and guitar were impressive and enjoyable.
Bruce Springsteen
5/5
Not a big Bruce fan, but this was a great album and more like his greatest hits. Enjoyed the variety and storytelling on the album.
The Who
3/5
I enjoyed the album overall and liked the clever commercial idea. I think they have better songs, so going middle of road with 3.
The Temptations
4/5
Enjoyed the variety and rhythm.
Marianne Faithfull
2/5
Why, why, why is this on the list. This is horrible.
Willie Nelson
4/5
Great album. Willie picked some great songs to cover and showed off his voice.
Steve Earle
3/5
There is much better country music to put on this list. This is okay. The guitar is good.
David Bowie
3/5
I thought the variety was better than some other Bowie albums that we have had.
Astrud Gilberto
3/5
This is good background music but nothing really amazing.
Calexico
4/5
I had not heard of this band before. However, they were a nice find. Vocals and instruments were pleasant with good variety of songs.
Can
2/5
It was ok until it hit the second half of album with multiple 18 minute songs of nothing. This is garbage.
Nanci Griffith
3/5
I found this nice easy listening. She has a good voice.
Caetano Veloso
3/5
Good sound, wish that I could have understood what he was saying though.
Ray Price
3/5
Started off strong with a song by Willie, unfortunately that was the peak. It was an okay country album.
Blood, Sweat & Tears
4/5
I kind of liked this band. The vocals were unique and strong. The instruments were well played and had some variety.
The Cardigans
3/5
Decent album, her voice is certainly distinctive.
The Adverts
3/5
For 1970’s punk it was not bad, but also not great. They knew how to play their three cords and kept it pretty clean.
Kings of Leon
4/5
Solid album by Kings of Leon. I do like some of their other albums more hence the rating.
Kid Rock
2/5
Kid Rock has some talent and some decent songs on this album. However, this album was too long and too vulgar to get a high ranking.
Carole King
4/5
Very enjoyable album. I did not realize that she performed all of these songs. She has a great voice.
Rocket From The Crypt
3/5
I didn’t remember this group at all. They were ok, but nothing really stood out.
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Pleasantly surprised by this album overall. The bands story telling and sound was very good.
Merle Haggard
4/5
I am impressed that Merle wrote most of these songs himself. Solid old school country album.
Nightmares On Wax
2/5
This sounded like glorified phone hold music. It sounded fine but there has to be better albums that could be in this list.
Gang Starr
4/5
I thought these guys had some good samples and intelligent lyrics without things in the gutter for this rap style. I enjoyed it.
The Teardrop Explodes
2/5
Another ho hum early 80’s Brit band on this list. You have a 7 minute song where you repeat same thing over and over, why?
Wild Beasts
2/5
Not a big fan, his voice was not good. Once again why is this on the list.
Bill Evans Trio
4/5
I thought instruments were well played and it was very relaxing music. It was a little long but was a live album so I get it.
The Kinks
3/5
Better than I thought this would be. Sounded like a lighter version of Beatles.
John Cale
2/5
This was ok, but not sure why on this list again.
Mudhoney
4/5
I liked this, but perhaps it is my enjoy grunge coming through.
Sonic Youth
4/5
I liked this one, though wish it had been a little shorter. Much better than some of their other albums.
Don McLean
4/5
Of course American Pie sounds good, the rest of album kind of sounded all the same, just good folk music.
Mike Ladd
2/5
Not a fan of this, it got trashy real quick and was way too long.
Amy Winehouse
4/5
She has a great voice and I enjoyed her jazz vibe. She certainly was channeling Frank on this album. A bit more even kill than her later albums.
The Youngbloods
3/5
Non vocal songs sounded the best as their instrument play I felt like was their strength. Decent album overall.
Duran Duran
4/5
I had not listened to the full album before. It is pretty solid throughout. Solid guitar, drums, and vocals.
Soft Cell
2/5
True one hit wonder. Rest of album outside one song is not good.
Def Leppard
3/5
It is typical Def leopard, some of their classics on here. A lot of it does sound the same though.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
4/5
This was a good album, but I feel like he has better. It did feel like it was all over the place, which is better than sounding all the same so rounding up.
The Pogues
3/5
For the Pogues, it is good album, just not a great album. Enjoyed the more traditional Irish instruments. While’s the last song was certainly a moving tale, it was a bit long at 8 minutes.
U2
5/5
I have always really loved this album. Perhaps because it was the only time that I got to see them live, but feel like Edge is amazing on this one.
5/5
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
4/5
Very smooth and easy listening music. Rather enjoyed it.
Motörhead
2/5
Comparing this to say a Metallica live album, this was not very good. It should not be on this list.
Adele
4/5
I rather enjoyed this despite the sadness of some of the songs. She really has a great voice.
Mylo
3/5
It’s an okay album for a DJ style sampling album. Only one song that was offensive. Kind of hard to believe he came from Skye.
Little Richard
4/5
He certainly has lots of energy and it is a short album. I do enjoy the jazz and early rock sounds.
Hookworms
3/5
It’s not bad, but once again don’t understand why this is on this list.
Ravi Shankar
3/5
The music was fine though I did not need a lesson on how they make it.
Skunk Anansie
2/5
I get they are British but that doesn’t mean they belong on the list. The vocals are horrible and the instruments ok at best.
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
3/5
This album is just middle of the road. Nothing really stands out as great on it.
The Clash
4/5
I kind of like this one, except for the length. The variety was nice to hear from the Clash.
The The
3/5
I had one of their later albums and this one was pretty similar, not bad, not great.
ZZ Top
3/5
They have some like three great songs on here and guitar play is solid, however the other songs are just not that great, hence the rating.
Peter Gabriel
3/5
For a first album this was decent but Gabriel certainly has much better.
Pet Shop Boys
3/5
For a PSB album it was ok and what I expected. Most of the album sounds the same.
Scott Walker
2/5
Not sure why this is on the list, he’s a British version of John Denver.
3/5
This was ok, but not really sure why on the list. Though shockingly not British.
Genesis
3/5
Not my favorite album of theirs though I did buy the cassette when I was a kid. These early Genesis albums were long songs and meant to be one big story.
Paul Weller
3/5
Not horrible but not great, just middle of the road.
Paul McCartney and Wings
3/5
Couple of good songs, but overall just a bit over average.
The xx
3/5
Was better than expected, but songs did sound very similar.

My favorite Who album on the list thus far. The variety, piano, and driving melodies are classics.
Muddy Waters
4/5
Very enjoyable jazz album, it must have been a great show to see live.
Rod Stewart
3/5
For Rod Stewart, it was better than usual. However, I am still just not a huge fan.
The Everly Brothers
3/5
I am a big Everly Brothers fan. However, this album only had two of their better songs on it. I still enjoy the harmony and quick paced songs.
Bad Brains
3/5
I was brewing for worse. Not really my style, however not bad.
Paul McCartney
4/5
I rather enjoyed this album. Nice melodies and good vibes.
Neu!
3/5
It was nice background music.
Sam Cooke
4/5
Cooke clearly was a great entertainer and he had some pipes. I enjoyed the energy on this live album.
2/5
This did nothing for me. His voice is not great. The instruments started well but then sounded sloppy.
Kraftwerk
2/5
I liked their other album we listened to on this list better than this one. It all sounded the same and not sure why they have two albums on this list.
The Prodigy
3/5
They are good at the club and hype beat for sure. However, after an hour it sounds all pretty similar.
Massive Attack
3/5
The sound is okay. It started strong, but nothing really great on the album.
Neil Young
2/5
Neil’s voice on this album was too much for me. He sounded off key and sloppy.
Kanye West
3/5
If this has been a bit shorter it would be a 4. I enjoyed it overall despite some of the songs being a little trashy.
Iggy Pop
2/5
I don’t understand Iggy. This album sounds like listening to Bowie, not a big fan of either.
My Bloody Valentine
2/5
Not a fan of this style of music with guitar overdrive and vocal mumbling.
The Stooges
3/5
Better than Iggy by himself, but still not great.
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
Really enjoyed the variety of songs and harmonies on this one. My favorite of theirs thus far.
Tortoise
2/5
Background, lobby, or elevator music, but not worthy of this list.
Dusty Springfield
3/5
I go back and forth on this album. Her voice is great. I just wished she would have done some original songs.
Eric Clapton
4/5
Solid album with some good guitar play from one of the best. Vocals were good though he has better.
Tom Waits
2/5
Sounds like a bad Bruce Springsteen with a cold. This was painful.
Jacques Brel
3/5
While I could only understand about 10% of it. The passion with which he sang garners it a solid 3.
Jimi Hendrix
3/5
Some solid songs but a little long. I feel like he has some better music.
Faust
3/5
It was better than some of the others in this genre. Decent background music.
Fela Kuti
3/5
If the album had been a bit shorter and not ended on a 15 minute percussion performance, then would have been a four.
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
Best Hendrix album on the list, so many hits and his guitar skills show so well on this album.
Leftfield
3/5
Good background sound, but not worthy of being on the list.
Aerosmith
4/5
I have not listened to much Aero outside of what gets played on the radio. I enjoyed this album. The guitar and vocals were solid, not too much of the screaming Tyler vocals so that was nice.
Michael Jackson
4/5
Not as good as Thriller, but enough solid songs to bump it up to a 4.
Elis Regina
4/5
She certainly has great pipes. Enjoyed the music and variety despite not understanding the language.
Portishead
2/5
Started out ok, then just lost interest. The vocals were not great and the sounds just got very weird.
M.I.A.
2/5
Such an odd album. Guess I could see it being a club dancing album, but not good for just listening.
