1001 Albums Summary

Almost all songs that you know and love already. Didn't quite sense an underlying storyline or theme? Maybe I'm missing something. But there are some stellar songs on here, and some interesting sounds in the background. Edit: after~125 more albums I came back and gave this the five it deserved.

Some real bangers, but a few that didn't resonate with me.

This is one of the goats. 100% a five star album. Songs that hit so hard. Where did the true poets go?

This is an easy one. But five stars isn't enough. A work of art, a true masterpiece, blah blah. It just is. I listened to it again. It's twenty five years old and still as remarkable as ever. Real poetry, unbound by any required context of contemporaneousness. Song segues that make the tiny hairs straighten and tingle.

This one looks like trash. We'll see. Update: it's not. It's pretty great actually. My prejudices, this time of contemporary pop music, aren't the right way to go through life. This was pretty damn enjoyable.

Top notch. Already one of my all time favorites. A masterpiece if I am able to say it. Svefn-ga-englar starts, you are floating in space and suddenly encounter life. It's comforting and warming and lovely. Suddenly you think you've left the realm, but it brings you back for another embrace before letting you go again. Staralfur you've arrived at your destination and it's a celebratory ceremony. You've begun your work. Flugufrelsarinn You meet the new life forms. Cautious at first. But their presence feels like a revolution is at hand. So much we will learn. Ny batteri You start to communicate with the discovered life forms. They express the suffering they've endured at the hands of the selfish and self centered Didn't complete the narration in this review because I was working while listening. But ultimately I have to give this five stars, it's still hits as hard as it ever did.

You have to be a real imbecile or psychopath or void of feeling to dislike this record.

Good musicianship, but the lyrics seem so pedestrian, sometimes rising to the level of cringe. Not poetry.

I mean, what to say? The best of all time. I can't think of an album that beats or meets it. As a cohesive unit it wins. From a personal perspective of Roger Waters or a global perspective of humankind, these lyrics transcend time and space. If you were to put the best works of art made by man into a time capsule for other species that come after humans, this work would be an absolute critical requirement inclusion.

Not my style of music necessarily, but I can see how Massive Attack is loved and appreciated for pioneering a musical genre. I saw Tricky back in 1995 when he was opening up for PJ Harvey. I enjoyed it!

Time locked. Not built to last

I don't get it. I love pavement, I like lots of grunge, I like avant garde pop, I like indie. I experienced the full weight of the 90s. I just cannot ever get with Sonic Youth. Where's the melodies and harmonies? What do people like about them?

I don't know how you listen to this with an open heart and not get emotionally wrecked.

Dirty white boy blues, not quite as magical as the stones but still pretty great, although a couple songs lagged.

Another surprise from the list, I quite enjoyed this. Thundercat writes some truly funny lyrics and very unconventional melodies. I'm not usually someone who would put on any rap music, but I really enjoyed it here.

Guy is such a sock sniffer. Holy fucking cheese. Stinky.

This is the album that let the cat out of the bag. Metallica was in a league of their own. While you could hear the influences from other metal bands, Metallica took metal to new heights. This is a searing album from start to finish, but unfortunately it was the lead up to a different Metallica starting with the Black album. They grew up, but we didn't want them to.

12yo me knew these guys were rad. 54yo me remembers they're rad. Especially the title track, amazing. Such a treat, thank you, list.

Had high hopes from the first track but then lots of meh.

I enjoyed this, except for the dog abuse song. I understand I'm applying contemporary principles to an era that was not so nice to pets and animals in general. I still wished for better from Johnny. Three stars instead of four

Time locked. Repetitive. Tiringly dizzy and plodding, simultaneously. Loud and irritating. Mids.

I mean, this isn't made for me. But I can't help saying, some songs that have been recorded in history are terribly dumb. Blow is one of those songs.

This album marked to the beginning of the end of Metallica for me. While there are plenty of decent enough songs to make this a three star album, the disappointment of their diminishing unique songwriting qualities cause me to drop it by one.

Gave up halfway through, just awful

Nobody can say shit to me about OK Computer. Show me another album that says as much about the goings-on in society, both back in the '90s up until current day, while causing such steady and consistent frisson.

Time locked. Boring singer, boring lyrics. Pointless to have on the list.

Originally thinking halfway through that this was a 3 for me. But after the last couple songs and reading a bit about her (didn't know anything before getting the album on the list, didn't recognize the name), I'm reminded of John Prine and started feeling the lyrics. This was nice.

Can't say whether I've listened to this or Greetings from Asbury Park more. Either way I was here for it and I'm lucky I was.

Started really strong, but kinda cooled down the last half. Still enjoyable.

Time locked, boring Brit Pop. I never got into Oasis or blur and any of those brit alt rock bands from the late '90s and I never will.

This would be a three if not for Waterloo Sunset.

Could only make it in 5 songs or so before I started to opt out, then I listened to the most listened to track of the album, Lovefool, and it reinforced what I was thinking. So bland, boring, waste of time.

Starts out banging the hits, then fizzles like a mid life loser's sex life. Disappointment

Pretty good jams if it weren't for Steve Winwood.

Very recognizable because my formative years post high school were filled with Pearl jam, smashing pumpkins, Nirvana, all that stuff, but it's all time locked and doesn't resonate with 50-something-year-old me. Was actually a tiring listen all together.

It's a great album without the pederasty baggage.

Recognizable blues tunes that Muddy just smoked on.

I get such a negative gut feeling when I listen to songs from this era that are way overplayed and way overrated. No good feelings from this album whatsoever. And in fact I quit halfway through

Kinda boring predictable melodies, but pretty heavy for the time and seems like it was a trailblazer in terms of heavy metal lineage, and there were some pretty enjoyable jams.

Songs with such cringe lyrics, time locked music. Then shifts direction with Sense of Doubt and then Moss Garden sounding like Brian Eno took over. I liked the second half so I guess 50-50

This one cooked.

I never gave bjork a chance back in the '90s, too interested in jam band music at the time to give much else a shot. But this stuff is lovely, engaging, unique and enjoyable.

I loved this when it came out. Going in again, it brought back all the excitement from when it was released in the aughts. I don't think there's a filler tune, all bangers but especially the title track and Us V Them, the latter causing any normal human to find it impossible to sit still.

Unc music, of course I really liked it.

Got this one when I was having a rough day with all sorts of bad thoughts winding around inside my head. It helped calm and ground me.

May Billy Corgan be stricken with weeping facial and anal boils. I bet he already is. Such a piece of shit this guy. Narcissist and overrated.

Can't do it. Not made for me. Couldn't make it past the second track.
