Album Summary

Slayed? is the third studio album by the British rock group Slade. It was released on 1 November 1972 and reached No. 1 in the UK. It remained on the chart for 34 weeks and was certified Silver in early 1973. The album was also the band's most successful of the 1970s in the US, peaking at No. 69 and remaining in the charts for 26 weeks. In Australia, the album reached No. 1 and went Gold, knocking the band's live album Slade Alive! to No. 2. Slayed? was produced by Chas Chandler. In 2010, Classic Rock considered the album an "essential classic", adding that it featured "party-hard tracks, and even something approaching a ballad with "Look at Last Nite", ensuring that Slayed? inarguably ticks all the right boxes." The Guardian noted the album's singles and other tracks as being "deservedly party riff monsters", but added: "Slayed?'s majesty lies in the melancholy ballads. "Look at Last Nite's" haunting refrain fingers both empty celebrity and fame's creeping downside."

Paint by numbers 70's glam rock. Nothing here to write home about... or rave about. Nice production value overpowered by mediocrity everywhere else.

They're a decent rock band, but Noddy's voice just makes everything sound like a novelty song. Maybe that's because I've been listening to the same 4 Slade songs for (checks notes) about 55 years.

Slade's 1972 record Slayed? is a frustratingly brilliant paradox—an absolute masterclass in high-octane glam rock hampered by a notoriously harsh, abrasive production style that pushes high frequencies to the absolute brink of ear fatigue. The raw vision and infectious, stomp-along energy are undeniable from track to track, kicking off with the catchy yet poorly mixed "How d' You Ride" before rolling through the groovy percussion of "The Whole World's Goin' Crazee" and the iconic powerhouse anthem "Mama Weer All Crazee Now." Yet, throughout the tracklist—from the clipping artifacts on "Gudbuy Gudbuy" to the wincing, crash-heavy cymbals on "I Don' Mind"—the recording quality repeatedly sabotages the listening experience with an overbearing high-end presence that makes elements like shakers needlessly piercing. Despite these grating mastering flaws and a few weaker mid-album cuts like "Move Over," the sheer infectious swagger of tracks like the closing medley "Let the Good Times Roll / Feel So Fine" keeps the spirit alive, ultimately making this a record that easily could have been a four-star triumph if the studio engineering had matched the band's brilliant, unhinged fire.

Rock. It's fine. It's not something I would recommend

Standard glam rock, well played but really I can't get past thinking I'm going to hear Noddy Holder screaming "IT'S CHRISTMAS!!!" at the end of every song. The Janis Joplin cover sticks out and the two Crazee tunes are decent, it also has a lot more joie de vivre than the dull as dishwater Kings of Leon album I had to listen to yesterday but realistically, who is listening, or even needs to listen, to this as a vital artifact of 70s rock at this stage? 4/10

Kind of in the second eleven of English bands in the early 70s, their simple, thumping sound makes Ballroom Blitz sound like King Crimson. And they have the nerve to cover Janis Joplin's "Move Over" and do about as good a version as you might fear. Apparently putting a few sequins on your hat, wearing tartan trousers and tight satin outfits made you "glam rock" which would have been of interest to Bowie. Probably no more interesting that Racey or Mud, and at least those bands had a vocalist who was in tune more often than not, but they sort of became critic's darlings for some inexplicable reason. An artefact of a particular time and place.

Actually pretty catchy!

Great album. Great band. You gotta love Slade!

Everything about this was obnoxious and annoying.

This was a decent listen. Somewhat ahead of its time glam rock. Reminded me of something else that I couldn't put my finger on. (3.5)

After listening to this, yesterday's Kiss album seems a lot better by comparison. This is such average, boring rock music.

Seemed pretty generic to me.

So much of the album would have been better with either different vocals/lyrics. The lyrics were as simple and boring as the most generic rock songs can get

Oof, I agree with Karen on this one. This was uninspiring and overall not a great audible experience. It seems as if Slade are asking us in the title if they 'Slayed?' To that I answer unfortunately not guys, unfortunately not...

Most 80's (*ahem* Hair Metal) bands were heavily influenced by Slade and this record gives you a good idea of why. They had that bluesy/hard rock sound down pat long before the producers and record companies slicked it up with big production and the magazines publicized the big hair. Slade did really well commercially and sold a LOT of records. But, oddly, they seem to have just faded away and they're only REALLY remembered by the musicians they influenced (and of course, Quiet Riot covers, LOL). This record has that glammy 80's hair metal/AOR feel without the keyboards and synths and BIG production. This really appealed to me as a "roots" type of listen.

Did not like at all, repetitive, too loud

Honestly enjoyable album. I don't think there's any takeaways from me, but I am surprised it wasn't more popular (at least based on Spotify listens). I enjoyed it quite a bit, and found myself jamming out at times. Probably 3.5-3.75

For the most part it kinda stinks, though it gets a bit better by the end of the record

I guess I don't feel too bad about missing the hair-band era the first time 'round.

First Listen Favorites: Let The Good Times Roll Wonderin Y Mama Weer All Crazee Now Honorable Mentions: How D'You Ride

T Rex adjacent really solid album

Every song feels like just a fun classic rock song. I think these guys invented spelling things in a fun way. highlights: how d'you ride gudbuy t'jane let the good times roll / feel so fine

Completely unremarkable? Just listened to it and couldn't tell you a single thing about it. Clearly a band that defined 80's hair metal.

Slade are a glam rock (Ziggy Stardust-era Bowie, T.Rex, Sweet) band from where that sound originated from, the United Kingdom. This album It's rebellious, anthemic, rock and roll grooves, snotty as all hell. The spelling of song titles is a bit quirky and eccentric, if I was kid back then I think I would've liked it, which might've added to Slades pure domination of the charts in the early 70s British charts. I think for my own thoughts, it was not too bad. It had good hooks, solid grooves, raspy vocals (though how he says can't have been good) which are superb. I guess I might like more of the singles rather than deep cuts, which I feel the album songs are a bit more on the formulaic bland side, even a bit of the singles I suppose fit that as well. I just find it a bit hard to return to this one apart from a single or two, I could use that time to listen to other stuff instead. Highlight Song/s: "Move Over" and "Mama Weer All Crazee Now"

My review might be unfairly harsh because there wasn't a part of this album that I disliked, but there also wasn't a part of it that I loved. They remind me of Led Zeppelin, but in a way that feels recycled. They mastered the formula of making a successful classic rock album, but in a way that's generic. By the end, nothing sticks out, and I still don't feel any character or identity to distinguish Slade from any other 70s rock band. And I hate the play on words, like naming their album after themselves but respelling it, using "Y" in place of why. Zeppelin never would have done that shit.

Sound almost like a mix of AC/DC and Thin Lizzy. Didnt know they originally created Cum on Feel the Noize, which I only realized when hearing it in as part of I'm Mee, I'm Now, An Thats Orl on the expanded edition of this album that I listened to. So I went and listened to the full version, and yeah its so much better than Quiet Riots.

Gudbuy, Gudbuy? Gud Lord. 2, but 1.5 for the plethora of stupid spellings.

sounds like a perfect summer party where nothing can ruin your mood. not even this album. 1.5

Distinctive sound. Mischievous. But ultimately disappointing.

Sing-along energy, heavy stomping rhythms, and shouty lyrics. Slade's brand of glam rock. Bostin' ay it?

Proper 70’s rock.

One of the first bands I remember with any clarity, and apart from the singles (which is what lives with me) it's all a bit disappointing. Not at all helped by Noddy's voice sounding like a buzz saw in each and every track. Next. 2*

Actually a pretty nice album but I feel like that kind of music appeared a bit later, although it does have some vibes from those 70s hits of the big bands that show up at the time like AC/DC. Overall, it was okay leaving in the background and maybe even quite nice.

QUE EMBOLEEEEEEEE 5/10

Man, this album rocks! I especially enjoyed the Janice Joplin cover, they absolutely killed it. Pure fun energy start to finish.

Nothing really stood out to me. Just not my cup of tea.

I just wish they knew how to spell better 🤪

Overall this felt like good enjoyable rock. Nothing mind blowing, though that could be the quality of something recorded so long ago. I did like Gudbuy T' Jane and Mama Weer All Crazee Now. But can we talk about spelling? It's over the top. It loses meaning and impact when it's every single song.

Enjoyed it ok. Not sure why they are on the list. Couple of good songs.

Slayed? Sorry, no, I'm throwing shade. I didn't notice the speeling but once I read other reviews I looked at the current song I'm on ("Man Who Speeks Evil") and it disproportionately upset me. Also "Cum On Feel the Noize" seems like this band ecosystem's best song, and that album (Quiet Riot - Metal Health) is not on the list. WHAT THE FUCK

I was forced to listen to this on YouTube. What an awful experience. Ads between every song. Such a shitty platform anymore. That has nothing to do with this album, just a small tirade at how much Google sucks now. This is a good album of straight rock & roll. It didn't knock me over, but I enjoyed listening to it. Their spelling leaves something to be desired, but it's entertaining.

Really boring stuff from a dated band that seemed to only have one worthy song anyways.

First off, fantastic cover art. I haven't heard a lot from these guys, but there's just something I like. Just a band not taking themselves too seriously. Bet they ripped in concert. I'm Mee, I'm Now, An' That's Orl stood out. I liked the change of sound in Kill Em At the Hot Club Tonite 3.5/5

I had never heard of Slade. This album won me over completely. What a fun rock group! The misspelled names give a general cheesiness to the affair, while the tunes contain a nice mix of hard rock and casual singing. The expanded edition I listened to also included some ad promos they did for Melanie readers, which reminded me of Spinal Tap something fierce. Just all around good fun. Added to liked list: How D’You Ride, Look at Last Nite, Move Over, Gudbuy T’Jane, Mama Weer All Crazee Now, I Don’t Mind, Wonderin’Y, Man Who Speeks Evil

Generic and inoffensive

2.5 some really nice energy at times

While listening, I noted: Kinda reminds me of Nazareth or Quiet Riot. And then once I was done listening, I looked them up on Wikipedia and discovered that they were the original performers of Cum On Feel The Noize, which makes a lot of sense, and is probably what I'm thinking of with the Quiet Riot similarity. Anyway, this album had some really wide variation in terms of depth of musicality and emotions. On one hand, there were rockin' arena anthems and on the other there were harmonically complex, minor key, ballads, some of which were in odd time signatures with multiple key changes and meter changes. I found their depth and range very nice, even if the lead singer's voice was usually grating and not very pleasant to listen to. I listened twice and enjoyed myself. Four stars.

Saw the cover and the glam rock tag and instantly began dreading listening and that though was completely on the money. Temu AC/DC but their British so their mystery inclusion on this list immediately becomes clear with the seeming bias with the author for shitty British bands no one remembers. Boring instrumentals and just awful vocals. The screaming in particular is just fucking miserable to hear. I could not listen to this full thing its so fucking bad. This piece of shit ruined my morning and I wish I could erase my memory of this ever existing.

Boeit me vrij weinig.

Het nummer I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a 'Rap' Album but This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time had ik toen het album uitkwam al een paar keer gehoord. Ja.

unremarkable

Amongst all the crazy spelling and Christmas related stuff, it’s easy to forget that Slade could actually rock out as well This might not be sophisticated or cool, but it’s not half bad either. There is some decent straight ahead rock and roll and I appreciate that sort of thing. And was surprised by how much I enjoyed it I’m not coming back to listen every week, but it’s half decent you know

Never heard of them. Kinda liked it.

I actually quite liked this

Gudbuy t’this. Ok. It’s ok 2-3

Not sure what's so special about this album. Sounds pretty generic to me.

Very Led Zeppelin-ish. Meh. 2

Holy shit rock and roll baby

What a band Slade were.. Very fun stuff indeed, maybe a bit outdated though, but fun, quite easily 3 stars for me.

1/5, couldn’t finish this one

Fun and enjoyable but a little samey by the end and lots of the songs were pretty repetitive. I think I’d enjoy some of these songs in a playlist but I don’t think I’d come back to the album again. Fav song: Gudbuy T'Jane Least fav: How D'You Ride

Cover and title is so much funnier than when it was originally out and I love it. Weirdly it just made me think of their Christmas song and got me in the mood for that. Pretty good rock otherwise. Specific rating - 4.2 Fav song - gudbuy t’Jane Least fav - kill em at the club tonite

I likd the musik but not the spllign of the song tytles: "Gudbuy" and "Crazee" especiallee annoy mi. Great energy and despite what the spelling wants you to think it's quite tidy rock- very structured, maybe occasionally bordering on repetitive, but mostly just fun. I think they would hate what the word slay has come to represent. Favourite song: Mama Weer All Crazee Now Leest: Let the Good Times Roll/ Feels so Fine

If you removed the folk and blues elements from the sound of Led Zeppelin along with a good chunk of the intelligence, you would get something that sounds like Slade. I don't mean that as a complete insult, these guys are here to deliver stomping rockers and they do this very well. The glamed up hard rock sound is consistent and they don't mix up their formula too much. The crashing guitars on "Move Over" sounded very heavy for 1972. Growing up on the rough streets of Wolverhampton, there is an everyman quality to Slade's music that doesn't have a lick of pretension over it. At times their bone-headedness can be grating, but they aren't trying to be anything that they're not and they just want you to be entertained. When they sing about letting the good times roll, they really mean it.

This is at least 30 minutes too long.

So that’s who influenced AC/DC! They also sounded like the Beatles on some tracks. Cool.

Rock muzak, seriously some uninteresting trash

There are better versions of the same. There's sometimes a reason bands don't get popular in the USA.

mid af unfortunately

This album sounds like bluesy hair metal. At least, the singer's voice strongly lends to the hair metal vibe. It's not really my genre; my parents liked to listen to this kind of music, and it's just okay to me. The lyrics and songs here are very repetitive. I'll say "I Don't Mind" was the best song on here.

Meh. The Led Zep influence is palpable, and the only good part of the album.

classic slade. 70s light rock and roll.

This album snatches a lot of different pieces of the zeitgeist. There's plenty of classic hard rock here and even bits of the Beatles and other contemporary bands. Unfortunately, I think the result is something a little too disjointed and aimless. There's some pretty decent stuff here, but I'm not sure I could pick this out from a lineup of other classic rock, and I'm unlikely to pick this album up for listening again. My problem with this album is that it often feels derivative, and even more often it is kind of boring. When I look back at this project in a few months, I predict that I will not remember ever having listened to this album at all. Favorite track: "Look at Last Nite"

I don't know what it is but I find the caveman way of spelling all of these song titles so endearing. I know it's all fer tha pursona er wutever, but it's reely fun to type like this. The music's pretty fun, too, albeit very distinctly early 70s. Still, they're all having fun, and much like all music where the artists are clearly having fun with it, I am too.

I think this is one of those: "They are an influential band from that era so we better include one album. Which one? What sold the most? Ok, put that one in" type of thing. So perhaps their album was the most influential despite other tracks being currently more popular on Spotify. At least I have heard of Slade. None of the songs on this album particularly but some of their later tracks still had some party staying power (when I was young at least). Giving them (another) 3 just for the songs that aren't here mainly. After the album was over did have to play their greatest hits. Cum on feel the noize! That's 3 hair metal stars. Run, run away.

I took a while to hear something interesting. Sometimes they figure it out, sometimes it’s just generic 70s rock

Not good, but pretty essential rock & or roll. Big crybabies in the negative reviews.

Come on, it’s rock n roll, it’s a good time. It’s catchy. Yeah it’s dumb, but it definitely plays up to that, and rock n roll kinda can be dumb fun. They predate ACDC, were one of the biggest bands in Britain in the early 70s, not making a comment on these things just saying as fact. I like dumb rock on occasion and I liked this today, In fact it helped what was a difficult morning, just some shout out loud rock n roll. 4 Star

Likt'n jeg

I mean, I feel that's pretty generic.

Mmm lo intenté y no conecté.

The global reviews really hate this, and I think a lot of it is due to the alternate spelling that plagues this album. I mean, first impressions are also a bit tough with those haircuts, especially the shirtless fella with the dad barrel bod on the far right. Nevertheless, this wasn't actually all that bad. Feels like some pretty typical early 70s glam rock.

The album cover really betrays the music. It's good/decent and the haters need to lighten up.

Powered by an unearthly vocal that carries the intensity of a steam train.

did not slay

So, a 70s British rock band that can't spell their song titles properly. It's a pretty fun rock album with a little bit of edge and raunch to it. It's as dumb as you would expect an album with these horribly misspelled titles to be, but it's fun. Most of the album is built off of Brit-blues riffage("white man blues"), with the vocals having a similar boogie rock quality to them. It's not life-changing, but it is ok for a listen once in a while. This album is ranked #29 of 31 albums released in 1972. Other 1972 albums rated by me: Ziggy Stardust(abbreviated title)(1/31)-4 Vol. 4(4/31)-5 Can't Buy A Thrill(5/31)-4 Talking Book(6/31)-4 Superfly(7/31)-4 Machine Head(11/31)-5 Paul Simon(12/31)-4 All Directions(13/31)-4 Home Is Where The Music Is(14/31)-4 The World Is A Ghetto(15/31)-4 Eagles(16/31)-4 #1 Record(20/31)-5 School's Out(22/31)-3 Manassas(25/31)-2 Something/Anything?(26/31)-3 American Gothic(31/31)-2

I'm so sick of all this glam garbage, and this is genuinely one of the worst ones yet. My main issue among many with this genre has always been the vocals, they are just so annoying and screechy. With some bands I can maybe just about forgive the singer as it does sometimes seem plausible that their voice "just happens to sound like that" (although that won't make me want to listen to their music), but with this it's so obvious that he's putting on the voice completely on purpose. Like they made the concious effort to make their music annoying as fuck when they were probably fully capable of making something half decent.
