This one caught me off guard, I can see how so many bands would have drawn influence from their sound in the 80's.

Love These Guys
If you can't handle 17min of this badassing, you're a lost cause.
I don't like 90s pop music
THAT'S one hell of a FUNKY album!
1-Star Albums (38)
All Ratings
Interesting choice for the beginning of my 1001 journey. I haven't heard it a while, and I remembered it having better rhymes (still grooves though).
For some reason I've always skipped out on listening to Nick Cave, glad I got to hear this album, it was quite a good surprise.
Memories of drinking rum on the ski hills
AW HELL YA FUNK!
Love Radiohead, this album was such a game changer for music, really opened up people to more experimental sounds.
A couple of top tier songs, definitely a powerful album.
Public Enemy is a good example of the late 80s/early 90s hip hop.
I'm not big on Neil Young. But I do enjoy "My My, Hey Hey" and "Hey Hey, My My"
Dear God No!
I haven't given the Beegees a deeper dive than the simple disco tunes, so that was interesting, but nothing really noteworthy.
This is good 90s Brit Rock, I really enjoyed it.
I'm not a Joni Mitchell fan
I used to be a big Bob Marley fan, but the past couple of decades I've drifted more towards Ska sounds like Toots & The Maytals, or some other notable Reggae artists. But it's definitely a classic.
Arcade Fire had some good songs
Love me some classic Goth music
I used to listen to Tricky as a teenager, a good communication between ambient and industrial.
I'm not as big on the Minneapolis sound as I am on Rick James, P-Funk, or more traditional Funk genres. But it's still a good album
Legendary Jazz... I'm still not well versed in the Jazz world, but I do enjoy it when I hear good jazz (and this is good jazz).
THAT was really good
Pretty standard Bowie affair, a lot of great songs and a couple that are only ok.
One really amazing song
Not my style
Fugazi is great
Oh HELL YEAH!
I love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but this is definitely not their best album... Although, I'm conflicted with how to rate it.
Eric Clapton is overrated
I'm not big on Tori Amos
To quote Matt Stone in the movie Orgasmo: "I think Depeche Mode is a sweet band"
I've been avoiding Liz Phair for all the wrong reasons, but this album is actually pretty awesome. Has some grunge vibes.
Personally, I was more of an Eazy-E fan when I was a kid, but this still has a G-Funk sound I like.
Quite the unique sound for the age, I do like some of his other songs too.
Ya, it's a good album (a wee bit pretentious with Warhol and Nico involved though).
I quite enjoy Manu Chao
I really like AIR
Great country album
Some serious bass on some of the songs, and is really good R'n'B
There's three types of Fleetwood Mac. The first one is pre-Stevie Nick's (so damn great), second one is Rumours (a couple of good songs), and third is no good.
Nice and relaxing
It's ok... Personally I prefer The Damned.
I hate Morrissey
Has a very The Flaming Lips vibe... I approve.
Oh heck ya... Sabotage has the greatest music video ever made.
Another classic band, such a sleeper that was overshadowed by the grunge movement. However, their classic album Loveless is very hard to overshadow as their best album.
Rufus Wainwright is great
Very good
6...6 6.... THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST!
Another extremely righteous album! My favourite Ambient band and their best album.
It's pretty good, im not personally a fan of the Wake Up song though.
Hard to go wrong with Jimi
I do love me some vintage punk, but not big on the Rockabilly sound.
That was different. I probably should rate it higher, but I'm unsure of what I think about it.
All time classic
Stevie Wonder is so amazing
Not really my style of electronic music
Not really a great live album, but I do like his sound (listened to that sound a lot growing up)
Such a good album
I'm a sucker for old school punk and I went into this extremely skeptical as I expected some 80s ballad pop... I was quite wrong. Touche.
I do like some Bjork. But "Post" is in my opinion the far greater album.
It was interesting, I know of The Fall, but I guess I never give them enough listening
Such a good old school hip hop album
It's fine
Definitely a 90s album
I'm not a big fan of The Boss
Amazing album, blew me away upon its release.
Happy Mondays... Very much a product of Manchester
I really liked Pantera in the late 90s, and preferred the album "Far Beyond Driven".
I never could get into Fat Boy Slim
Kool Keith's space gynecologist rap persona
Funky. The Temptations were apart of the sound of my childhood in the 80s
Great 70s rock band, and this album really showcases that blues influence.
Interesting
A pioneering rap album
I find Queen has either the best rock songs ever played, or the opposite and everything in between. I do love Stone Cold Crazy as it essentially is the first Thrash Metal song ever.
Arguably the best album in Nirvana's catalog
It's rare that I don't love a Beck album (although, his newer stuff isn't so great)... Fun fact, I didn't like "Loser" when it came out.
I don't like 90s pop music
Ya... There's a reason people think Eddie is a guitar god.
I just can't. There are so many examples of good music (including pop) representing strong feminity that doesn't involve a team of ghost writers and producers... It feels fake. I'll stick with Phoebe Bridgers, Remi Wolf and Jay Som instead.
I prefer his earlier work.
Interesting multi genre album. She's got some good ones, but I'm not feeling it tonight.
I thought I would be more into this album.
It's Tears For Fears... No need to "shout" out an explanation of why this album is give stars (pun intended with prejudice)
It's good
So relaxing
U2 was only good in the 80s
My brother had this album in the 90s and I still blast 'Gimme The Loot' all the time.
Masking "not-so-great" rapping with an electric or rock sound just doesn't sit well with me
This band is the unsung hero of CBGB's and should be praised as much as their contemporaries (Talking Heads, Blondie, Ramones).
Honestly, I've just never liked the iconic Elvis voice
It's... Fine I guess?
Yes
So underrated
So smooth
Fun example of early electric music... Not as weird as things can get.
Love me some funk
This album is one of the best the 90's had to offer (even with Billy Corgan's insufferable arrogance).
As far as Nu-Metal goes, this album was the epicentre of it all.
Curtis Mayfield equals "Funky and Smooth!"
His sound was so good
I quite enjoyed that
Yup... Classic Thrash based purely on hate
Well... I wasn't expecting it to be as "COOL" as it actually sounded. Touche Mr. Davis
Meh... It's fine
I grew up listening to this type of music, but for some weird reason I didn't find this band until much later in life... I want to give this album 4.5 stars, a couple of songs slightly underperformed.
Them dang Doors
Pretty decent for someone singing over Drum'n'Bass... But I really don't like Drum'n'Bass.
As far as Nu-Metal goes, this isn't so bad... But it sure isn't anywhere near as good as Deftones
I was a bit surprised how well this album held up against earlier Portishead albums
Probably my favourite Bowie album
Pet Shop Boys have some great music, this particular album isn't one of them
Yup... It's prog
Anything that came out of CBGB's in the 70's is top tier music... Talking Heads also just had a solid discography
It's good
I do enjoy me some Bjork
I really love the G Funk sound of the west coast rap scene that Dre pioneered... But I don't like his rap style as much as Ice Cube or Easy E.
It's Ray!
It's The Cure
British rap always has an odd sound to me for some reason. Sounds enough though.
Classic... And setting the price by donation was revolutionary at the time.
Somehow I "didn't see" this album hidden amongst the other amazing albums Stevie Wonder had made in the 70's
Fun times with noise... I wonder how many people had trouble listening to this one (I quite liked it).
R.I.P. to the best Beach Boy (I grew up loving The Beach Boys).
I do love some Radiohead
He's good
I like the Ska element of this sound, but I really don't like the rest.
Classic!
Erykah Badu knows how to do Soul/R&B right... It's definitely headphones and relaxing music.
He's fine, just guilty by association (I really don't like Andy Warhol)
THIS is one of my favourite albums of all time
Jazz trumpet
I really like Joy Division
Miles... had the linguistic skills of a drunk sailor (he swore a LOT).
There's a reason this band was such an inspiration to the 90's alternative sound... And by osmosis has helped shape my musical preference.
Labelling themselves as "One of the most influential bands of the last 40 years" at the beginning of their Spotify profile... 3 stars
He's not my boss
How does this man kick so much ass?
I'm indifferent
Lars hates bass
THAT'S one hell of a FUNKY album!
G'n'R just sounds like a last attempt to rectify the dying Hair Metal genre... Axl is no fun (such an 80's nickname).
Pretty decent 60s rock
Heck Ya early Electronic Krautrock
Shoegaze
My second favourite Sabbath album
His voice is SO ANNOYING
Folky... 2.5 stars
Solid album
Good ambience
Thumb up
Something very European about this 1001 album list
I don't hear no "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!"... 2 stars for this slow excuse for disco.
When it's good, it's really good... CAN is awesome. 3.5 stars.
Killing Joke is no joking matter
I do like Blondie, a classic CBGB's band, but mainly the classics... 3.5 stars
Besides two extremely good songs, I really don't like this album and I find most of Fleetwood Mac to be insufferably overrated after they added Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks.
It's Elvis
This one caught me off guard, I can see how so many bands would have drawn influence from their sound in the 80's.
I remember seeing this album as a kid in the record store... Good times
It does play well with The Wizard Of Oz
I like PJ Harvey
"Oye Como Va" is such a good song
THE ORIGINAL BLACK METAL!!!
Hell Ya Black Sabbath
The fact people say you have to listen to it several times to understand it and the fact the musicians are all extremely talented is overshadowed by the fact a grade five classroom playing the recorder to Hot Cross Buns gives off quite a similar sound... 1 star.
Van Morrison should have done after this album what most people who get too old and say stupid stuff should do... Retire.
Love his song "The Light"
When I was a kid, it was albums like this that I was afraid of... 5 Stars.
One of the biggest albums to come out of the '90s is definitely a work of art
I think there was a lot of inspiration drawn for this album, but Courtney definitely did a great album to distinguish herself as a talented individual in her own rights.
The Beta Band has it figured out
Interesting...
The Cure really is The Cure (and I'm sure it's been said a few thousand times)
The song Green Onions stands out far above the other songs on this album, I'm a bit disappointed the rest weren't as good.
I can't stand Bob Dylan
Gotta love that happy sound
Such a great album that helped start the Goth sound of the Post-Punk era
Punk and Irish Folk at it's finest
Remember that scene from The Big Lebowski where The Dude says to the taxi driver "Come on, man. I had a rough night and I hate the f***in' Eagles, man!"... That's what I feel like every time someone suggests The Band.
I'm not a fan of live albums
I was expecting some generic R&B sound, but was surprised by how wrong I was... 4 stars
Meh
Nope... Not liking that Folk
It's pretty decent for 60's folk
Weird Al did it better
California Dreamin' is one of the best songs ever conceived, and the rest of the album reflects it.
Reminds me of the early 90's
That wasn't fun
It's fine for someone, just not me
Paul Simon isn't really my thing
I bet some old boomer who is White Snake's 35th biggest fan really doesn't appreciate this album. But they would be VERY WRONG! It is really good... 5.5 Stars
Not my jams
Too European for me
Yacht Clubs around the world are swarming with the sound of this album
Interesting elements from multiple genres, but alas it still has a very deep late 80's pop sound that just doesn't do it for me
I heard a rumour Brazilians really love this guy
No... She's good at what she's doing, but not a fit for me personally.
No message in a bottle? Boooo
Such good jazz
Le Freak!
So much damn Flute
It's pretty good
Wow, what an amazing voice
I feel like there's a joke about an Arm here, but... I'm.stumped
I prefer The Cure
Wilco is one of those bands I know about, I like, I just don't listen to them often enough... But I do like them
Smooth
Message In A Bottle!
Marvin Gaye always trying to grasp what is happening... Love it
I prefer their later stuff
One very VERY good song
It's good
If you can't handle 17min of this badassing, you're a lost cause.
Fish sticks
As a kid, when it came to grunge, Alice In Chains was delegated to the same realm as Pearl Jam as something I rarely got to listen to, because my focus was heavily directed towards Soundgarden and Nirvana. I still love Superunknown over all other grunge albums, but I do very much enjoy this album as a sound from my adolescent youth.
Good for the genre
This album got me Skanking
Trent helped popularize Industrial for the masses, and this was his greatest album that was dropped the perfect time.
I'm not a huge Arcade Fire fan
Great album, ahead of its time.
Nice to play as background music
Decent for the time period
Love me any member of the Wu-Tang Clan. 5.5 stars!
I can't stand Joni Mitchell
I'm going to go out on a limb and assume they were high when they made this... I know, Long Shot!
I prefer their later stuff
Love me some Shuggie
Meh
Quality beats
Much better than I remembered, it's definitely a solid album
Wow... What a blast from the past, and that main single is going back in rotation.
No surf or car songs? No over the top industry changing production?... Meh, it's ok I guess.
Jazzy
Great Folk album
Doing POP the right way, Kate Bush was an underdog of the early pop sound and I'm glad her legacy has a renewed interest from younger people.
Would be worth more stars if she looked up the definition of a irony
Love me some Beta Band!
My dad loved Janis Joplin and I always hated it when I was a kid. Later in my adulthood once I started to actually enjoy her music, he finally told me a story about how he was working in the oil patch of Northern Alberta back in the early 70's and would go into the pub and toss a bunch of money in the jukebox and put on Janis Joplin's song "Mercedes Benz" on repeat, then he'd sit in a far corner of the place and watch as eventually people would lose their minds trying to turn off the music. That's when I realized that I was just like him, because I had also done that exact same thing at a pub in Alberta with "The Hamster Dance".
His debut album isn't my favourite, but it's decent... 4 stars
I quite liked this album
Pretty good jazz
Yes!
This was the last decent album by Kings Of Leon
American Water is a better album
Decent proper blues
Ministry did it better
Great classic punk
Some seriously good Salsa
J5 at the top of their game. This album gets a lot of nostalgia points for me as I had it on repeat for my early 20s... They just sound good.
As a kid I loved this music, I can appreciate it as an adult, but I'm not exactly craving for Fats to be on repeat
Gary Numan is a man too far ahead of his time that it's quite possible he built a time machine to bring the greatest music of the future back to the past in order to prevent WW4 from occurring (nothing can be done about the possibility of WW3 taking place though)... He's kind of like the hero humankind needs, but he only does it for mild enjoyment.
R&B so smooth, I might just be pregnant from listening to it
I understand his influence on generations of artists, but his voice is the worst and I'm not even impressed with his most of his song writing skills, I just find him so EXTREMELY Overrated!... But at least this was a tolerable time period in his musical career... BUT! I'd definitely smash a chair over the head of any guy who goes towards the jukebox to put this garbage on, thus starting a bar fight. 1 Star regardless of his album.
Meh
It's extremely rare that a Live album is good, and that being said, unless you were there to see the actual show, they're almost always a bad album... This isn't a good album.
That boy needs therapy
Ya, it's pretty good... But not my favourite Kinks album
Meh... Overrated
It has Bohemian Rhapsody...
I'm not really a Rockabilly type, but they're a good example of an early punk influence
I was a bit surprised that I enjoyed this Chicago album as much as I did
Not a fan of these three
Pretty great album
Funky
Weird hippie stuff that sounds exactly like what drug abused hippies would enjoy
One of my all time favourite albums and a large part of my youth as I can remember the exact moment I heard it on the radio (unlike almost all the music I currently listen to)... Easily the best grunge album in my opinion.
Too bad she's gone to conspiracy theories
At first I thought "OH... the Brimful Of Asha song... Ugggh". But then I started to realize this band is both a product of the mid-late 90's alternative sound I associated with a lot of bands I didn't like at the time, and they were better than I was giving them credit for 3.5 stars
Leonard Cohen is who Bob Dylan wishes he was. Usually I have a distaste for 60's Folk, but I'm extremely surprised that I enjoyed this album... 4 stars?
Zappa is always interesting
I didn't grow up listening to The Beatles like a lot of my contemporaries, and I always had an inversion towards them because of my difference. But you have to give credit where credit is due. 4 stars.
Superior to the likes of most pop stars, Its still not very great
Amazing songs that are surrounded by complete garbage circus tunes
I remember really enjoying this album in school
Its ACDC
Nu Metal was just the music industry trying to replicate the prosperity of 80's Hair Metal. As I see a resurgence of the scene lately, I noticed a lack of the same need to offset the pop scene that was also extremely prevalent in the late 90's/early 00's, and it seems to be inundated with middle aged parents who are afraid to be considered "Old and out of touch" and their children who were raised listening to this "edgy" music. Now, I understand that a lot of teenagers have identified with the lyrics Chester sang in Linkin Park, and I will say outright that if Chester was the ONLY voice in Linkin Park I'd have a bit more respect for them, but I can actually identify the beginning of my distaste for the whole Nu Metal scene based off of the first time watching the music video for LinkedIn Park's "One Step Closer", which is an amazing feat as I was a prime example of the target demographic for this music genre. I still love Deftones though.
I like their other stuff more
I'm not a fan of Green Day
Love These Guys
That bass is so thick
One of the best Thrash albums (and one of the Metal albums) of all time.
I feel like Ska has a cap at 4 Stars, and that's what makes it so great! It's not trying to impress anyone, it's just the most fun music genre, period. 4.5 Stars
The first few Sabbath albums were masterpieces that just don't get old
... Overrated artist
Old school Ice Cube was epic... I was all about that era of gangsta rap.
Staralfur stands as one of the most beautiful songs and this album extends on that single into a soundscape that makes it one of the best Ambient albums.
Even the great Motorhead doesn't have what it takes to make a live album a good idea
THE Shoegaze album
Nothing good came out of the late 90's pop music scene... and all those who were apart of the Mickey Mouse Club.
Good old school rap
The best parts of the Talking Heads became Tom Tom Club... This album is a gem.
Pretty standard Elliott Smith affair... Great for if you have a hankering for some Elliott Smith and nothing else
Someone once said to me "There's no such thing as a GOOD kiss song" and I decided to investigate, and you know what I found out? Their songs are FUN and they ROCK, but none of them are actually GOOD... 3.5 Stars.
Radiohead laid out the groundwork for this sound, and as much as I viewed Coldplay as an attempt at ripping off what Radiohead had done, they weren't the only band at the time doing it, and they definitely did a better job than most on the first couple of albums to the point I actively listened to them alongside Radiohead. I honestly thought "Don't Panic" and "Trouble" were on the second album and was considering giving it 3 Stars based on that fact alone.
THIS album was nowhere near what I expected. In a very bad way. "Gimme Shelter" is one of the best songs I've ever heard and have been listening to it for the past 25 years (I never grew up listening to The Beatles or The Stones), so I always assumed this album would be full on gold, yet never actually sat down and listened to the whole thing. But THEN this happened! What a disaster... No wonder why Lemmy from Motorhead said The Beatles were better. An entire album being lifted by a solid single is always a damn shame, and they really tried too hard to poorly replicate the Delta Blues (or whatever genre of Blues they were trying to appropriate). Thankfully I never found out the hard way by purchasing this album.
I grew up listening to this style of music in the 80s... But I preferred The Beach Boys. The album is fine, I'm just not in the mood for it, so 2 Stars.
Oh man... THIS guy. He's a weird one.
As a kid I always thought this was Madonna... Boy was I wrong.
Everything from Nina Simone is 5 Stars... Her melodies are too good
I LOVE old school punk... And these guys were never on my radar, but I'm firmly impressed by this album.
The only time I love hearing a LIVE album is under these circumstances
It's decent... But not my favourite Kinks album
I see Rush as a super nerdy band... And they're very good at it.
This is a very generic example of electronic music and reflects poorly as an example of representing the genre as one of the best albums... Something extremely European is going on here.
This album felt extremely odd and different than anything else when it was released, but it holds up to this day. But, I kinda prefer Demon Days.
For some reason I never got into Sonic Youth when I was a kid, but I really missed out on such an inspirational band that influenced so many of my favourite bands of 90's Alternative and beyond. This album is pretty great, although I have been listening to their album a lot more this past year.
Meh
Naw... Just can't get into Joni Mitchell
Good dark atmosphere
I used to be into this hipster folk stuff... It's not bad though, but there was some garbage albums from that era.
For such a violent and weird psycho that Phil Spector was, he sure knew how to inspire The Ramones... They are not on this album though.
Radiohead is pretty much 'S' Tier from this album and up.
How is it this guys early work has the sound of Toy Story soundtrack, but with fucked up lyrics? This is weird... But is actually not bad.
Its ok
I'm currently in a bit of a bit of Samba/Calypso stage of my music listening life right now, so this fit in pretty nicely... 3.5 Stars
Love me some Samba
Good album
Pretty decent Punjab music
This ain't no White Strips, and it's noticable.
I find it hilarious how this band from California is revered in the culture of Confederate South Eastern United States, a culture that is polar opposite of what California represents... It's kind of like how Kid Rock is a rich kid from the suburbs near Detroit, or how Bruce Springsteen is a "Blue Collar" musician... Maybe I'm wrong? At least they're music was pretty good some of the time
It might be Prog Rock, but that doesn't mean that it's a good idea to add a Live album to a list of 1001 Albums in ANY reference... With the exception of Classical music and maybe 8 other Live albums (7 which I doubt you put on this 1001 list). Stop adding Live albums!!!
Sonic Youth is a perfect example of what Alternative Music was, before the genre became a contradiction of it's namesake (which, bands like Sonic Youth helped to bring to fruition). Anywho... This is a really good album and I am loving being forced back into Sonic Youth's discography.
Meh
This is quite the polarizing album for me. A couple of hits that I find god awful, and some random songs that hugely impressed me (definitely can see how a couple of these lesser known songs have influenced bands in the punk and early alternative scenes).
Love me that Dance Punk/New Rave sound.
Pretty standard Led Zeppelin affair
Meh... It's definitely from the UK
What the hell did I just endure? It was a journey of both ends of the Good vs Bad spectrum.
The ratio of Lime being added to the Coconut is about a 3.5
Little Richard is the EPITOME of the sound of traditional Rock & Roll. Say what you want in these modern times about this guy's music, but he is the reason modern music exists, and is in my opinion the most influential person in musical history. Plus he had more energy than a 6 year old in a candy shop during the time period Elvis imploded on the toilet.
Yup, good.
This album really hooked me... Has a real Jefferson Airplane (not Starship) vibe, and I can appreciate it for being both similar and being unique. I'd be stupid not to give this 4.65 stars
He was hilarious as the bus driver in the movie Spy Hard
Hugely influential artist... 2 Stars
At first I thought "Dear God! Who the hell would put a SECOND album (let alone ONE) from this guy on a list of the top 1001 albums? STUPID" I still think that, but at least this album was much better than the last one I was asked to rate.
Gil Scott-Heron is a badass
That album cover art is so awesome. The songs sound nothing like the album cover art... Until you hear Paradise By The Dashboard Light and realize this album is meant to be played in a proper 70's boogie can as a means for romance. It's sexy in a HAHAHA kind of way.
Average pop affair. The only reason it's 2 stars is because Dâm-Funk is one of my favourite DJ/Producers. EDIT: I took a second listen, and it's actually pretty decent for being an "above" average pop album. 3 stars and Dâm-Funk takes it to 4 stars.
No artist or band that started in the late 60s and early 70s went on to create anything noteworthy in the 00's and beyond... With the SOLE exception of David Bowie. She is definitely not David Bowie.
Californians play the blues
Sounds like 1990 electronic music from Europe/UK
Sounds like something a fan of Rod Stewart would like
Even though I grew up absolutely hating this style of music, I do want to go sailing.
Willie coming across stoned as Sesame Street on this album
Got a soft spot for old school country
Was expecting a bunch of Eileen songs, but was surprised by the ska... I like ska.
Pretty standard Elton John affair.
I've been diving into a lot of Afro-beat lately, so this suggestion hit at the right time. It's good, but I do enjoy his dad's work a wee bit more.
This is the kind of album you buy on vinyl to be unique and know that it's has complexity to it's many layers... Then one day youre having friends over for drinks and one of them asks why this album is still wrapped in plastic and should we put it on, and you give a hard pass as you know it's not the right time or place to put it on... It's never the right time or place. 3 Stars
Had this album on repeat (for lack of many alternate CDs) during a Baja surf/road trip, so I'm pretty biased here... Brings back memories.
In the humble words of Matt Stone's character within the cinematic masterpiece known as 'Orgazmo': -"I don't mean to sound like a... or nothin, but I think Depeche Mode is a sweet band".
There's just something about early punk I love
Sounds good to me
Mr. 'Chef' himself in his second release is down right funky as hell.
Man, how high were people in 1970? Just a lot of extremely talented musicians getting all random and "experimental" with the instruments, resulting in the types who look at a banana duct taped to the wall and declare the plight of struggling Tibetan dental assistants being represented by the contrast of the bruises and the colour yellow... It's extremely pretentious, yet is still decent enough to enjoy on some weird levels. I hated this type of jazz as a kid. The album name and art is really good.
I had much lower expectations, and it was pretty decent (technically an unrelated note: I hate Andy Warhol)
That album cover is saying something... I don't know what it is apart from "sex sells", but it's definitely got a statement. Music is meh
Odd how much Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins sound like the same person
Whenever 70/80's punk pops up (NOT The Sex Pistols), it's just a great listen. Poly Styrene is a great lead and a roll model for females in the punk movement.
Love the name of the album
I have a weird relationship with listening to Elliott Smith... Sometimes it's nice, other times it's awful, and most of the time I just don't need his depression overshadowing my own feelings of whatever odd existentialism I've got going on, so I rarely visit his sad and slow discography... But here I am, feeling like I'm not quite in the dimension I am supposed to be in and I find an Elliott Smith album I really appreciate at a 5 star level? Something ain't right.
Someone else's review of this album claims: "Four of the songs on this album are about ham" and proceeded to give it 3 stars... I can appreciate that statement.
Spitting decent rhymes and actually playing instruments. Yes, please. I really like Little Simz even though I have been disappointed by most UK rappers I've heard (with the exception of MF DOOM. Ya, he was British)
Unless it's December, and he's singing Christmas Carols... He better only be singing Fly Me To The Moon or My Way.
Best review: "I ate a giant burger after listening to this. Take that Morrissey!!" Morrissey sucks and this album is nowhere near as good as what The Cure offers.
It was something special upon release, but now is pretty standard.
I remember having tickets to see these guys in Vancouver for this album tour. Needless to say I didn't make it. It was a good precursor to the Hipster overabundance of "stomp stomp clap" movement that tried to make Folk a good time (it never is).
About what I expect from Leonard Cohen
Arguably the most underrated album ever.
Was going to give it 4 stars because it's been a while since I heard this album, but nope, it's definitely worth the 5 it deserves.
Got that house sound from 1990 I was expecting
One quote from another individual really stood out for me about this album. "Bro who even is this guy. I google his name and the first result is "Finley Quaye found guilty for headbutting terminally ill friend over Game of Thrones" and the image is some black-and-white Gilbert Gottfried lookalike (rest in peace by the way) and Peter Dinklage. Then the literal next result is "Finley Quaye admits criminal damage after he threw metal road sign through glass bus door". The third result is "Finley Quaye threatened to stab cop and 'get a grenade' for bar manager he vowed to shoot"." Otherwise, this is not a good reggae album... But is a 2.5 stars album based on being something else.
I've been playing Sonic Youth on repeat for the past year, so I'm obviously going to give most of their albums 4 or 5 stars... Their name was always on my radar in the early 90s, but I was too into the grunge stuff to notice the real good alternative bands that emerged from the late 70s punk scene into the 80s collage rock scene, but I am sure glad to give them their due diligence now that I can still appreciate them.
One of the best albums ever made... Simple. I was going to make a "Stevie, if you're reading this..." jokes, but figured that was extremely poor taste.
Some songs I sing on occasion, too bad it's a live album.
Someone DEFINITELY loved The Velvet Underground but gave it a monotone flavour of The Stooges. I can see why No Dogs In Space podcast was going to do an series on these guys... I prefer Television.
When Beck released his first album, I hated it. But then I get hit by Two Turn Tables & A Microphone and I've never looked back. This album is one of my favourites.
Love me some fun goth music, especially from the group that basically started the genre... But I couldn't help feeling that Unknown Pleasures is more than simply one of the best album covers of all time, it's also the better album (personally) from Joy Division.
Just "NO"
I obviously didn't listen to the lyrics as much as I probably should have (sounds like this Tim guy might be a bit of a dick?). But, aside from that, It was hit and miss.
This album WOULD be 5 stars, but they took a bunch of drugs in India and someone thought it'd be a good idea to let Ringo sing a really REALLY bad kids song about a colourful submersible. Tomorrow Never Knows is a good time.
Talking Heads On Meth?
Sounds like Jazz... But, less than (maybe it's me? But I get the feeling it's not).
Seeing as it's St. Patrick's Day and I'm rating this particular album, I'll give it 3.5 stars as I'm indifferent to The Pogues.
I could see how this would be a good influence on music that came after... But it's messy in a bad way.
It's straight forward ACDC... 5 stars.
Influential, but pretty mundane.
4 stars
I'm starting to really understand what Lemy was talking about when it came to the difference between The Beatles and The Stones... The Stones have a few good songs and I'm pretty sure those were all written by Brian Jones, the rest is meh at best.
Guru and DJ Premier are always top tier hip hop.
Second Kraftwerk album this week? What interesting timing, almost as if robots and computers got involved (yes, lame German style joke, you must laugh!). This is a very clean and crisp album for an early electronic album and there's no doubt that they are amazing synthesizer players, and it is better than the last one you tried to convince me that it needs to be on this list (it doesn't). But ya, this is 3.5 or 4 star material as an average listening goes. It's just so German.
That's some pretty decent Country
Loved this album a few years ago when I first learned about it and how it was a heavily influence on the psychedelic rock scene and rock operas... But I can't give it the 5 stars I want to give it because it sounds weak in comparison to what the production could be.
Ella Fitzgerald is amazing. But I'd prefer to have a normal album of hers added to this list.
DJ Premier always has one of the best New York hop hop beats. But I do admit I prefer when Guru is on the microphone (but Jeru is no slouch for early 90s skills).
Dammit! Duke is amazing, and his playing on this reflects that talent and wonderful sound... Only to be ruined by talking and the audience (the clapping was a big let down). Rarely does a live album do anything right.
I always mess up Nick Drake with Nick Cave... Nick Drake is a LOT better.
It's almost as if this guy took a lot of inspiration from the 80s Collage Rock scene (especially this unknown band by the name of The Pixies)... Guess he will go down in history as a One Hit Wonder. *This is sarcasm
Holy crap, just a non stop example of a toxic relationship, you two can't even stop cheating on each other (she got caught in the end)... But that's what makes good country music. I can't remember, did her truck break down? Welp! I can't believe I'm saying this... 4 stars?
Normally I'd be pretty annoyed by being forced to listen to Rod Stewart (besides the track "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" of course). But, then that keyboard started up at first track and I got distracted by how actually good this album is... But let's not get ahead of ourselves, it was the first track, and the second one is extremely lackluster, and then the album started going downhill quickly from there with the occasional decent moment. How the heck does Rod Stewart sound so old and destroyed at such an early time in his career? I'll be nice and give it 3 Stars
I really wanted to give this 4 stars, but then some random dumb sound ruins my vibe and I drop it to 3 stars faster than these guys dropping acid. If I was intoxicated on random substances in the desert at night, I'd probably want to give them "3 BILLION Stars... Man".
Early Country is better than early Folk... And that's why I have to give credit where credit is due and give DP 3 stars.
I'm just not that into Cowboy Junkies, but at least they're not Bob Dylan.
For someone who has the Blues, he sure sounds like he's gotten over it and earned himself some Greens with this Red album (not a bad live album though, such great guitar). I like my Blues to be more depressed.
How the hell did I end up with a streak of so many Country albums in a row? You're lucky I like old country more than old folk music... 3 Stars because they really all sound the same at this point (and may your truck break down just for the hell of it).
I had a hard time finding this album on my streaming service (Qobuz does Hifi), so I found it somewhere else. I can see why Qobuz doesn't have this album available. Anyone who gives this 5 Stars should seek psychiatric help, there's something not quite right going on there.
Ahhh... 1996, the music industry trying to find a Nirvana cover band while the alternative sound moves away from Grunge towards something more unique or mainstream (depending on the band)... Oh, and let us not forget the coming age of boy bands and sexualizing teenage girls from the Mickey Mouse Club. Can't say I remember ever hearing Ash, but it sounds like the perfect example of a mid 90s alternative band... I actually enjoy it for what it is.
My dad loves this album, I wasn't as impressed growing up until I was listening to punk music one day and he pointed out that it sounds very similar to the music he grew up listening to... So I can't unheard it.
Evvveeerrrryyyyybody hurts.... especially when my ears have to endure this song (this song ruined all R.E.M. for me for a very long time).
As someone who is both self proclaimed "open minded" and isn't a fan of hippie folk music, I went into this album expecting to roll my eyes and gag, but was pleasantly surprised by a strong and unique opener of a song that made me question my distaste for Joni Mitchell, and I started to question everything. That didn't last long as the album slowly descends from really good into mediocracy. Life went back to normal... But! This wasn't that bad, so I shall investigate further. 3/5 stars
Poor man's Dave Matthews?
What did you expect from Tom Waits? He's definitely giving you what Tom Waits does best, he does Tom Waits. Even the Ramones knew that.
Usually if they're not playing songs about wanting to ride a bike or large posteriors or Flash Gordon, I'm not interested. BUT! This was a good time and thankfully didn't have the hits.
Who's buying? Well... I probably would.
Meh. It's an example of why I don't really listen to Nick Cave
First song started off ok, and then he started singing and it was tolerable... THEN the second song started playing and this album took a turn for the compost bin (because that's where this crap belongs). I just stopped listening to it.
Normally I hate live albums, but I think the Blues as a genre actually is pretty good via a live album medium. Congratulations, you've slightly changed my mind about something. But that doesn't excuse ALL love albums! 3.5 stars because it's still a live album.
Someone once told me that Yacht Rock is just Funk for white people (maybe it was on the YouTube classic show 'Yacht Rock'? I highly recommend the show) and I can't unhear it. As far as Bland funk goes, I have to give props to the smoothness of the groove. 4 stars.
I love psychedelic rock, but anyways... 3.5 stars
So far she sung one note change in a particular way that I liked, but the rest just reminded me of why I don't like hippies.
Hello, hello... F you Bono! And while we're at it, what grown adult calls themselves 'Bono' or 'The Edge' without a sense of satirical irony? Even Johnny Rotten moved on from the 70s punk scene. Your names are Paul and David and you're old men.
Normally I have a hate or like (not love) thing with Neil Young, but for some reason Cinnamon Girl hit different this time around... I blame the full moon on a spring evening.
I really love their album Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia (for obvious reasons)... This album starts off a bit Neil Young and transitions into the Dandy Warhols I know and love the deeper I get into this album. I do love this band. I want to give it 4 stars(ish), but I also love this album the more I try to decide how much I like this album. Fuck it, 5 stars just because.
I prefer their album Superfuzz Bigmuff for the obvious reason, but I was a grunge kid of the early 90s who found the alternative sound from genres like Punk, Grunge, Shoegaze, etc... very appealing as it was so different from the mainstream music of the 80s. These guys are a prime example of the Seattle grunge scene and i like it. Thorn is good song, too bad the album started off bad, 4 stars.
L’histoire de l’art is a banger. This is an album all over the spectrum of rap of its time period, but not always in a good way (did I just hear his version of LL Cool J? Ew, don't do that). His Jazz influenced rap beats are nice though, and he has the ability to bring steez when he tries to approach his lyrics in a smooth tone instead of impersonating more famous rappers of the time period from the states.
I prefer their earlier albums when they influenced punk. Its OK, but meh.
Bloody Well WRONG (god damn this band is annoying).
Even the description of this album under Cohen's own streaming page call this a disappointment. I tend to have next to no love for most Folk music, but the weird thing is Leonard Cohen squeaks past my critique of the genre somehow, especially as every time I expect to dislike him as much as my distain for Bob Dylan, but something sounds slightly better.
Sounds like pretty standard 1993 music.
White guy wanting to be a Rastafarian type music of the 2000s
Talented with an incredible voice, but is a pretty standard affair.
I love classic punk, and i also love early alternative music... then I listened to this album, and I "GET" what is going on here as far as being unique and influential, AND I did enjoy it to an extent, but wasn't hitting the right way as classic punk or early alternative usually hits. It's not you, it's me.
Rant: Any time individual musicians in a band change their name to something like Sonic Boom (I'm looking at YOU U2!) and isn't a solo act or a collective project, I feel they need to be ridiculed by a pack of drunk Aussies... and no, there's no way these people are given these nicknames by reliable outside sources like friends or family, and yes I think there's plenty of dumb names from the punk scene that people gave themselves to sound "cool". Fucking U2, still trying to get that damn album off my computer to no avail! The album was pretty OK actually.
Theresa a lot of OK mixed with NOT OK in this album, and its mixed together at times.
What if The Eagles were Kiwis from the 80s
Lemmy has that thick bass
Pretty good for a UK Post Punk album from the 80's... 3.5 stars
Doesn't matter what the contrarians think, this album was an instant classic for a reason and holds up over time (and I was one of those contrarians when this album came out).
Good bluegrass music, but two hours of it explains the decline of introspection and rise of cognitive dissonance within specific geographical regions that fit the demograph of listening to this specific genre of music. Go back to fishing in the dark
That's one terrible album cover. I went into this expecting a really bad folk album, but instead I got something that is a mix of 80s alternative, hair metal ballads, pearl jam, and a bunch of celtic stuff. It works. A lot of mid/late 90s bands are going to use this style of music to disturbingly terrible effect.
I like it. It's nothing special, but is pretty good for what it is.
Yes... it's prog
Pretty expected of Butthole Surfers... And as someone who likes this band, it is a hard sell.
Guess they should have stayed in the Human League? Im kidding. Love them pointing out that nobody needs that fascist groove thing (because fascists have no groove) and taking Kraftwork to the next logical step.
Wait until you see how poorly I viewed Taylor Swift, let alone the Walmart version of her... just no.
Hippies
I love the Beach Boys, and I especially love Brian Wilson's contributions to modern music, and post Animal Sounds music. Yet, here I am thinking to myself "It's... fine" as I roll my eyes.
The Jam are self proclaimed to be the biggest band in the 70s British punk scene... Now, I didn't experience the 70s British punk scene first hand, but I absolutely listen to a lot of 70s punk, and that listening almost never involves The Jam while I do listen to a lot of British bands like The Clash to Gang Of Four to Crass to The Damned to The Slits (and so on and so forth down into the depth of less mainstream bands who don't claim to be the biggest band in the 70s British punk scene). So I think Paul Weller, who was a big part of The Jam, may have an over inflated view of himself and his worth, and it also seems this list is only contributing to that over inflation. This album is nothing special in any way.
So... last Bob Marley I said I prefer old Ska and would rather listen to Toots & The Maytals. I have to say that currently I have been listening to more Dub and Rock Steady, so the timing of this album popping up is going to yield a higher rating than a few months ago, but yes, it is a damn good reggae album (glad to divert from his hits).
Maybe I'm the only one, but it is my firm belief that Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel sound EXACTLY THE SAME. Anyway... it's Prog.
Let's seperate the artist from the art for a moment and realize this pedophile was really good at music (and I've never been an MJ fan). BUT, as strong as this album started off, it really goes downhill after a couple of songs. Why do pedophiles always have to ruin everything?
Was a really good time until the weird stuff started up... but it's King Crimson, it's Prof, it's too be expected (as I've said about every Prof album on this list).
Love me some TV On The Radio, but oddly this is my first listen to this album and I went into it skeptical from reading other's reviews of this album... It's good, REALLY good, but only 4.5 stars good.
What happens when an art student decides to play the roll of a gangster... thug life? I listened to Eazy E.
They list their band as The Rascals now, guess they're not Young anymore. Standard 60's pop equals 3 stars
When someone takes TOO MUCH
Imagine if he didn't leave the Beatles and actually made a good album
As a kid I absolutely hated this band and all forms of New Wave... as an adult I am completely changed. I am more open minded and accepting, I have started to enjoy more New Wave, and I expected that my taste of Culture Club would be refined. Nope, I still don't like it.
AC/DC did it better
Seeing I was about to embark on a folk.album i rolled my eyes and thought "here we go again" as I poised myself ready for the 1 star button. Needless to say, it didn't go as planned.
Nope... burn it with fire (hairspray is flammable)
I don't like bargin bin Billy Joel
At the end of the day, he's just a gay fish who used to be married to a hobbit and didn't take his meds while hanging out with MAGA Nazis... go swim little guy! This was the only album by him I actually listened to (thanks to Limewire) and he was pretty revolutionary before he lost his marbles.
I only learned that the Bee Gees had a life before disco last year. That being said, it's fine. Not GREAT, but not bad.
I have an Uncontrollable Urge to listen to more nerdy surf punk from the late 70's
I like their synth style
It's pretty decent for an album I was expecting to be subpar
Even though they never put their singles on any LPs, I still really like this album and the lore behind it's making... it's the journey of Punk to Goth.
I never got the hang of this band, it's OK at best.
Someone once tried to explain Drum n Bass to me at a rave, they said I need to listen to the complex layers, and so I did... still sounds like crap. Very much a UK thing (as bad taste as the food) The only Drum and Bass I want to hear is Death From Above 1979.
EGAD! That voice just ruins the whole thing.
I liked her better in the 80's when she wasn't drawing from younger talented people
Hmmm... f**k it, let's give 3 stars because the album cover made me do a double take.
I'd drink a beer in a beat down skuzzy bar to this album
Cast a Vicious Mockery spell, this is some DnD shit! Or just stinky hippies? Regardless, it wasn't annoying when imagining them as a soundtrack to an RPG.
