Fugees
2/5
Interesting choice for the beginning of my 1001 journey. I haven't heard it a while, and I remembered it having better rhymes (still grooves though).
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4/5
For some reason I've always skipped out on listening to Nick Cave, glad I got to hear this album, it was quite a good surprise.
Buena Vista Social Club
3/5
Memories of drinking rum on the ski hills
Parliament
5/5
AW HELL YA FUNK!
Radiohead
5/5
Love Radiohead, this album was such a game changer for music, really opened up people to more experimental sounds.
Dusty Springfield
5/5
A couple of top tier songs, definitely a powerful album.
Public Enemy
4/5
Public Enemy is a good example of the late 80s/early 90s hip hop.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
2/5
I'm not big on Neil Young. But I do enjoy "My My, Hey Hey" and "Hey Hey, My My"
Scritti Politti
1/5
Dear God No!
Bee Gees
3/5
I haven't given the Beegees a deeper dive than the simple disco tunes, so that was interesting, but nothing really noteworthy.
Supergrass
4/5
This is good 90s Brit Rock, I really enjoyed it.
Joni Mitchell
1/5
I'm not a Joni Mitchell fan
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
I used to be a big Bob Marley fan, but the past couple of decades I've drifted more towards Ska sounds like Toots & The Maytals, or some other notable Reggae artists. But it's definitely a classic.
Arcade Fire
4/5
Arcade Fire had some good songs
Echo And The Bunnymen
4/5
Love me some classic Goth music
Tricky
4/5
I used to listen to Tricky as a teenager, a good communication between ambient and industrial.
Prince
3/5
I'm not as big on the Minneapolis sound as I am on Rick James, P-Funk, or more traditional Funk genres. But it's still a good album
John Coltrane
3/5
Legendary Jazz... I'm still not well versed in the Jazz world, but I do enjoy it when I hear good jazz (and this is good jazz).
Elis Regina
5/5
THAT was really good
4/5
Pretty standard Bowie affair, a lot of great songs and a couple that are only ok.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
One really amazing song
The Divine Comedy
1/5
Not my style
Fugazi
4/5
Fugazi is great
Motörhead
5/5
Oh HELL YEAH!
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
5/5
I love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but this is definitely not their best album... Although, I'm conflicted with how to rate it.
John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers
2/5
Eric Clapton is overrated
Tori Amos
1/5
I'm not big on Tori Amos
Depeche Mode
4/5
To quote Matt Stone in the movie Orgasmo: "I think Depeche Mode is a sweet band"
Liz Phair
4/5
I've been avoiding Liz Phair for all the wrong reasons, but this album is actually pretty awesome. Has some grunge vibes.
Snoop Dogg
3/5
Personally, I was more of an Eazy-E fan when I was a kid, but this still has a G-Funk sound I like.
Scott Walker
3/5
Quite the unique sound for the age, I do like some of his other songs too.
The Velvet Underground
4/5
Ya, it's a good album (a wee bit pretentious with Warhol and Nico involved though).
Manu Chao
3/5
I quite enjoy Manu Chao
Air
4/5
I really like AIR
Willie Nelson
3/5
Great country album
D'Angelo
4/5
Some serious bass on some of the songs, and is really good R'n'B
Fleetwood Mac
2/5
There's three types of Fleetwood Mac. The first one is pre-Stevie Nick's (so damn great), second one is Rumours (a couple of good songs), and third is no good.
Bebel Gilberto
3/5
Nice and relaxing
Sex Pistols
3/5
It's ok... Personally I prefer The Damned.
The Smiths
3/5
I hate Morrissey
Mercury Rev
4/5
Has a very The Flaming Lips vibe... I approve.
Beastie Boys
5/5
Oh heck ya... Sabotage has the greatest music video ever made.
My Bloody Valentine
4/5
Another classic band, such a sleeper that was overshadowed by the grunge movement. However, their classic album Loveless is very hard to overshadow as their best album.
Rufus Wainwright
4/5
Rufus Wainwright is great
Lloyd Cole And The Commotions
4/5
Very good
Iron Maiden
5/5
6...6 6.... THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST!
Boards of Canada
5/5
Another extremely righteous album! My favourite Ambient band and their best album.
Arcade Fire
4/5
It's pretty good, im not personally a fan of the Wake Up song though.
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
Hard to go wrong with Jimi
4/5
I do love me some vintage punk, but not big on the Rockabilly sound.
John Martyn
3/5
That was different. I probably should rate it higher, but I'm unsure of what I think about it.
Jefferson Airplane
5/5
All time classic
Stevie Wonder
5/5
Stevie Wonder is so amazing
Leftfield
2/5
Not really my style of electronic music
Sam Cooke
2/5
Not really a great live album, but I do like his sound (listened to that sound a lot growing up)
Carole King
5/5
Such a good album
Pretenders
4/5
I'm a sucker for old school punk and I went into this extremely skeptical as I expected some 80s ballad pop... I was quite wrong. Touche.
Björk
4/5
I do like some Bjork. But "Post" is in my opinion the far greater album.
The Fall
4/5
It was interesting, I know of The Fall, but I guess I never give them enough listening
De La Soul
4/5
Such a good old school hip hop album
Stephen Stills
3/5
It's fine
Manic Street Preachers
4/5
Definitely a 90s album
Bruce Springsteen

I'm not a big fan of The Boss
The xx
5/5
Amazing album, blew me away upon its release.
Happy Mondays
4/5
Happy Mondays... Very much a product of Manchester
Pantera
4/5
I really liked Pantera in the late 90s, and preferred the album "Far Beyond Driven".
Fatboy Slim
2/5
I never could get into Fat Boy Slim
Dr. Octagon
4/5
Kool Keith's space gynecologist rap persona
The Temptations
4/5
Funky. The Temptations were apart of the sound of my childhood in the 80s
ZZ Top
3/5
Great 70s rock band, and this album really showcases that blues influence.
Machito
3/5
Interesting
LL Cool J
3/5
A pioneering rap album
Queen
3/5
I find Queen has either the best rock songs ever played, or the opposite and everything in between. I do love Stone Cold Crazy as it essentially is the first Thrash Metal song ever.
Nirvana
5/5
Arguably the best album in Nirvana's catalog
Beck
5/5
It's rare that I don't love a Beck album (although, his newer stuff isn't so great)... Fun fact, I didn't like "Loser" when it came out.
Robbie Williams
2/5
I don't like 90s pop music
Van Halen
4/5
Ya... There's a reason people think Eddie is a guitar god.
Taylor Swift
1/5
I just can't. There are so many examples of good music (including pop) representing strong feminity that doesn't involve a team of ghost writers and producers... It feels fake.
I'll stick with Phoebe Bridgers, Remi Wolf and Jay Som instead.
Elvis Costello
3/5
I prefer his earlier work.
Janelle Monáe
3/5
Interesting multi genre album. She's got some good ones, but I'm not feeling it tonight.
Blur
3/5
I thought I would be more into this album.
Tears For Fears
5/5
It's Tears For Fears... No need to "shout" out an explanation of why this album is give stars (pun intended with prejudice)
Primal Scream
4/5
It's good
Norah Jones
4/5
So relaxing
1/5
U2 was only good in the 80s
The Notorious B.I.G.
4/5
My brother had this album in the 90s and I still blast 'Gimme The Loot' all the time.
Stereo MC's
2/5
Masking "not-so-great" rapping with an electric or rock sound just doesn't sit well with me
Television
5/5
This band is the unsung hero of CBGB's and should be praised as much as their contemporaries (Talking Heads, Blondie, Ramones).
Elvis Presley
2/5
Honestly, I've just never liked the iconic Elvis voice
Beth Orton
3/5
It's... Fine I guess?
A Tribe Called Quest
5/5
Yes
5/5
So underrated
Stan Getz
4/5
So smooth
Kraftwerk
3/5
Fun example of early electric music... Not as weird as things can get.
The Isley Brothers
4/5
Love me some funk
The Smashing Pumpkins
5/5
This album is one of the best the 90's had to offer (even with Billy Corgan's insufferable arrogance).
Korn
3/5
As far as Nu-Metal goes, this album was the epicentre of it all.
Curtis Mayfield
5/5
Curtis Mayfield equals "Funky and Smooth!"
Fela Kuti
4/5
His sound was so good
4/5
I quite enjoyed that
Megadeth
5/5
Yup... Classic Thrash based purely on hate
Miles Davis
4/5
Well... I wasn't expecting it to be as "COOL" as it actually sounded. Touche Mr. Davis
David Bowie
3/5
Meh... It's fine
Paul Revere & The Raiders
4/5
I grew up listening to this type of music, but for some weird reason I didn't find this band until much later in life... I want to give this album 4.5 stars, a couple of songs slightly underperformed.
The Doors
4/5
Them dang Doors
Everything But The Girl
3/5
Pretty decent for someone singing over Drum'n'Bass... But I really don't like Drum'n'Bass.
Incubus
2/5
As far as Nu-Metal goes, this isn't so bad... But it sure isn't anywhere near as good as Deftones
Portishead
4/5
I was a bit surprised how well this album held up against earlier Portishead albums
David Bowie
5/5
Probably my favourite Bowie album
Pet Shop Boys
2/5
Pet Shop Boys have some great music, this particular album isn't one of them
Yes
3/5
Yup... It's prog
Talking Heads
5/5
Anything that came out of CBGB's in the 70's is top tier music... Talking Heads also just had a solid discography
The Fall
4/5
It's good
Björk
4/5
I do enjoy me some Bjork
Dr. Dre
3/5
I really love the G Funk sound of the west coast rap scene that Dre pioneered... But I don't like his rap style as much as Ice Cube or Easy E.
Ray Charles
3/5
It's Ray!
The Cure
5/5
It's The Cure
Skepta
4/5
British rap always has an odd sound to me for some reason. Sounds enough though.
Radiohead
5/5
Classic... And setting the price by donation was revolutionary at the time.
Stevie Wonder
5/5
Somehow I "didn't see" this album hidden amongst the other amazing albums Stevie Wonder had made in the 70's
Lightning Bolt
3/5
Fun times with noise... I wonder how many people had trouble listening to this one (I quite liked it).
Brian Wilson
4/5
R.I.P. to the best Beach Boy (I grew up loving The Beach Boys).
Radiohead
5/5
I do love some Radiohead
Rufus Wainwright
4/5

3/5
I like the Ska element of this sound, but I really don't like the rest.
Run-D.M.C.
4/5
Classic!
Erykah Badu
5/5
Erykah Badu knows how to do Soul/R&B right... It's definitely headphones and relaxing music.
Lou Reed
3/5
He's fine, just guilty by association (I really don't like Andy Warhol)
Thundercat
5/5
THIS is one of my favourite albums of all time
Louis Prima
3/5
Jazz trumpet
New Order
3/5
I really like Joy Division
Miles Davis
4/5
Miles... had the linguistic skills of a drunk sailor (he swore a LOT).
Pixies
5/5
There's a reason this band was such an inspiration to the 90's alternative sound... And by osmosis has helped shape my musical preference.
Tortoise
3/5
Labelling themselves as "One of the most influential bands of the last 40 years" at the beginning of their Spotify profile... 3 stars
Bruce Springsteen
1/5
He's not my boss
Stevie Wonder
5/5
How does this man kick so much ass?
Dire Straits
3/5
I'm indifferent
Metallica
4/5
Lars hates bass
Curtis Mayfield
5/5
THAT'S one hell of a FUNKY album!
Guns N' Roses
1/5
G'n'R just sounds like a last attempt to rectify the dying Hair Metal genre... Axl is no fun (such an 80's nickname).
Moby Grape
4/5
Pretty decent 60s rock
Tangerine Dream
3/5
Heck Ya early Electronic Krautrock

Can
3/5
When it's good, it's really good... CAN is awesome. 3.5 stars.
Killing Joke
5/5
Killing Joke is no joking matter
Blondie
3/5
I do like Blondie, a classic CBGB's band, but mainly the classics... 3.5 stars
Fleetwood Mac
2/5
Besides two extremely good songs, I really don't like this album and I find most of Fleetwood Mac to be insufferably overrated after they added Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks.
Elvis Presley
2/5
It's Elvis
Japan

"Oye Como Va" is such a good song
Venom
5/5
THE ORIGINAL BLACK METAL!!!
Black Sabbath
5/5
Hell Ya Black Sabbath
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
1/5
The fact people say you have to listen to it several times to understand it and the fact the musicians are all extremely talented is overshadowed by the fact a grade five classroom playing the recorder to Hot Cross Buns gives off quite a similar sound... 1 star.
Van Morrison
4/5
Van Morrison should have done after this album what most people who get too old and say stupid stuff should do... Retire.
Common
5/5
Love his song "The Light"
Sepultura
4/5
When I was a kid, it was albums like this that I was afraid of... 5 Stars.
The Smashing Pumpkins
5/5
One of the biggest albums to come out of the '90s is definitely a work of art

The Beta Band
5/5
The Beta Band has it figured out
Jeff Beck
3/5
Interesting...
The Who
3/5
The Cure
5/5
The Cure really is The Cure (and I'm sure it's been said a few thousand times)
Booker T. & The MG's
3/5
The song Green Onions stands out far above the other songs on this album, I'm a bit disappointed the rest weren't as good.
Bob Dylan
1/5
I can't stand Bob Dylan
The Bees
5/5
Gotta love that happy sound
Siouxsie And The Banshees
5/5
Such a great album that helped start the Goth sound of the Post-Punk era
The Pogues
4/5
Punk and Irish Folk at it's finest
The Band
1/5
Remember that scene from The Big Lebowski where The Dude says to the taxi driver "Come on, man. I had a rough night and I hate the f***in' Eagles, man!"... That's what I feel like every time someone suggests The Band.
Deep Purple

Roxy Music
1/5
Too European for me
Dire Straits
3/5
Yacht Clubs around the world are swarming with the sound of this album
Neneh Cherry

Jorge Ben Jor
4/5
I heard a rumour Brazilians really love this guy
Bonnie Raitt
2/5

If you can't handle 17min of this badassing, you're a lost cause.
Kanye West
3/5
Fish sticks
Alice In Chains
5/5
As a kid, when it came to grunge, Alice In Chains was delegated to the same realm as Pearl Jam as something I rarely got to listen to, because my focus was heavily directed towards Soundgarden and Nirvana. I still love Superunknown over all other grunge albums, but I do very much enjoy this album as a sound from my adolescent youth.
Billie Holiday
3/5
Good for the genre
The Specials
4/5
This album got me Skanking

Ms. Dynamite
4/5
Wow... What a blast from the past, and that main single is going back in rotation.
The Beach Boys

No surf or car songs? No over the top industry changing production?... Meh, it's ok I guess.
Charles Mingus
3/5
Jazzy
Nick Drake
5/5
Great Folk album
Kate Bush
4/5
Doing POP the right way, Kate Bush was an underdog of the early pop sound and I'm glad her legacy has a renewed interest from younger people.
Alanis Morissette
3/5
Would be worth more stars if she looked up the definition of a irony
The Beta Band
5/5
Love me some Beta Band!
Janis Joplin
5/5
My dad loved Janis Joplin and I always hated it when I was a kid. Later in my adulthood once I started to actually enjoy her music, he finally told me a story about how he was working in the oil patch of Northern Alberta back in the early 70's and would go into the pub and toss a bunch of money in the jukebox and put on Janis Joplin's song "Mercedes Benz" on repeat, then he'd sit in a far corner of the place and watch as eventually people would lose their minds trying to turn off the music.
That's when I realized that I was just like him, because I had also done that exact same thing at a pub in Alberta with "The Hamster Dance".
Lenny Kravitz
4/5
His debut album isn't my favourite, but it's decent... 4 stars

Ministry did it better
The Adverts
5/5
Great classic punk
Willie Colón & Rubén Blades
4/5
Some seriously good Salsa
Jurassic 5
5/5
J5 at the top of their game. This album gets a lot of nostalgia points for me as I had it on repeat for my early 20s... They just sound good.
Fats Domino
3/5
As a kid I loved this music, I can appreciate it as an adult, but I'm not exactly craving for Fats to be on repeat
Gary Numan
5/5
Gary Numan is a man too far ahead of his time that it's quite possible he built a time machine to bring the greatest music of the future back to the past in order to prevent WW4 from occurring (nothing can be done about the possibility of WW3 taking place though)... He's kind of like the hero humankind needs, but he only does it for mild enjoyment.
Al Green
5/5
R&B so smooth, I might just be pregnant from listening to it
Bob Dylan
1/5
I understand his influence on generations of artists, but his voice is the worst and I'm not even impressed with his most of his song writing skills, I just find him so EXTREMELY Overrated!...
But at least this was a tolerable time period in his musical career... BUT! I'd definitely smash a chair over the head of any guy who goes towards the jukebox to put this garbage on, thus starting a bar fight. 1 Star regardless of his album.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
2/5
Meh
Thin Lizzy
1/5
It's extremely rare that a Live album is good, and that being said, unless you were there to see the actual show, they're almost always a bad album... This isn't a good album.
The Avalanches
5/5
That boy needs therapy
The Kinks
3/5
Ya, it's pretty good... But not my favourite Kinks album
Kanye West
2/5
Meh... Overrated
Queen
4/5
It has Bohemian Rhapsody...
The Cramps
3/5
I'm not really a Rockabilly type, but they're a good example of an early punk influence
Chicago
4/5
I was a bit surprised that I enjoyed this Chicago album as much as I did
Crosby, Stills & Nash
1/5
Not a fan of these three
Lauryn Hill
4/5
Pretty great album
4/5
Funky
The Incredible String Band
2/5
Weird hippie stuff that sounds exactly like what drug abused hippies would enjoy
Soundgarden
5/5
One of my all time favourite albums and a large part of my youth as I can remember the exact moment I heard it on the radio (unlike almost all the music I currently listen to)... Easily the best grunge album in my opinion.
M.I.A.
4/5
Too bad she's gone to conspiracy theories
Cornershop
3/5
At first I thought "OH... the Brimful Of Asha song... Ugggh". But then I started to realize this band is both a product of the mid-late 90's alternative sound I associated with a lot of bands I didn't like at the time, and they were better than I was giving them credit for
3.5 stars
Leonard Cohen
4/5
Leonard Cohen is who Bob Dylan wishes he was.
Usually I have a distaste for 60's Folk, but I'm extremely surprised that I enjoyed this album... 4 stars?
The Mothers Of Invention
4/5
Zappa is always interesting
4/5
I didn't grow up listening to The Beatles like a lot of my contemporaries, and I always had an inversion towards them because of my difference. But you have to give credit where credit is due. 4 stars.
Beyoncé
2/5
Superior to the likes of most pop stars, Its still not very great
Beatles
3/5
Amazing songs that are surrounded by complete garbage circus tunes
The Prodigy
4/5
I remember really enjoying this album in school
AC/DC
4/5
Its ACDC
Linkin Park
1/5
Nu Metal was just the music industry trying to replicate the prosperity of 80's Hair Metal. As I see a resurgence of the scene lately, I noticed a lack of the same need to offset the pop scene that was also extremely prevalent in the late 90's/early 00's, and it seems to be inundated with middle aged parents who are afraid to be considered "Old and out of touch" and their children who were raised listening to this "edgy" music.
Now, I understand that a lot of teenagers have identified with the lyrics Chester sang in Linkin Park, and I will say outright that if Chester was the ONLY voice in Linkin Park I'd have a bit more respect for them, but I can actually identify the beginning of my distaste for the whole Nu Metal scene based off of the first time watching the music video for LinkedIn Park's "One Step Closer", which is an amazing feat as I was a prime example of the target demographic for this music genre. I still love Deftones though.
Blur
3/5
I like their other stuff more
Green Day
2/5
I'm not a fan of Green Day
Meat Puppets
5/5
Love These Guys
Kendrick Lamar
5/5
That bass is so thick
Todd Rundgren
3/5
Metallica
5/5
One of the best Thrash albums (and one of the Metal albums) of all time.
The Specials
4/5
I feel like Ska has a cap at 4 Stars, and that's what makes it so great! It's not trying to impress anyone, it's just the most fun music genre, period. 4.5 Stars
Black Sabbath
5/5
The first few Sabbath albums were masterpieces that just don't get old
Bob Dylan
1/5
... Overrated artist
Ice Cube
4/5
Old school Ice Cube was epic... I was all about that era of gangsta rap.
Sigur Rós
5/5
Staralfur stands as one of the most beautiful songs and this album extends on that single into a soundscape that makes it one of the best Ambient albums.
Motörhead
2/5
Even the great Motorhead doesn't have what it takes to make a live album a good idea
My Bloody Valentine
5/5
THE Shoegaze album
Talking Heads
5/5
Christina Aguilera
1/5
Nothing good came out of the late 90's pop music scene... and all those who were apart of the Mickey Mouse Club.
Public Enemy
3/5
Good old school rap
Tom Tom Club
5/5
The best parts of the Talking Heads became Tom Tom Club... This album is a gem.
Elliott Smith
3/5
Pretty standard Elliott Smith affair... Great for if you have a hankering for some Elliott Smith and nothing else
CHVRCHES
4/5
KISS
3/5
Someone once said to me "There's no such thing as a GOOD kiss song" and I decided to investigate, and you know what I found out? Their songs are FUN and they ROCK, but none of them are actually GOOD... 3.5 Stars.
Coldplay
4/5
Radiohead laid out the groundwork for this sound, and as much as I viewed Coldplay as an attempt at ripping off what Radiohead had done, they weren't the only band at the time doing it, and they definitely did a better job than most on the first couple of albums to the point I actively listened to them alongside Radiohead.
I honestly thought "Don't Panic" and "Trouble" were on the second album and was considering giving it 3 Stars based on that fact alone.
The Rolling Stones
2/5
THIS album was nowhere near what I expected. In a very bad way.
"Gimme Shelter" is one of the best songs I've ever heard and have been listening to it for the past 25 years (I never grew up listening to The Beatles or The Stones), so I always assumed this album would be full on gold, yet never actually sat down and listened to the whole thing.
But THEN this happened! What a disaster... No wonder why Lemmy from Motorhead said The Beatles were better. An entire album being lifted by a solid single is always a damn shame, and they really tried too hard to poorly replicate the Delta Blues (or whatever genre of Blues they were trying to appropriate).
Thankfully I never found out the hard way by purchasing this album.
The Everly Brothers
2/5
I grew up listening to this style of music in the 80s... But I preferred The Beach Boys. The album is fine, I'm just not in the mood for it, so 2 Stars.
Aphex Twin
4/5
Oh man... THIS guy.
He's a weird one.
Cyndi Lauper
3/5
As a kid I always thought this was Madonna... Boy was I wrong.
Nina Simone
5/5
Everything from Nina Simone is 5 Stars... Her melodies are too good
Wire
5/5
I LOVE old school punk... And these guys were never on my radar, but I'm firmly impressed by this album.
Keith Jarrett
4/5
The only time I love hearing a LIVE album is under these circumstances
The Kinks
4/5
It's decent... But not my favourite Kinks album
Rush
4/5
I see Rush as a super nerdy band... And they're very good at it.
Soul II Soul
2/5
This is a very generic example of electronic music and reflects poorly as an example of representing the genre as one of the best albums... Something extremely European is going on here.
Gorillaz
4/5
This album felt extremely odd and different than anything else when it was released, but it holds up to this day. But, I kinda prefer Demon Days.
Sonic Youth
5/5
For some reason I never got into Sonic Youth when I was a kid, but I really missed out on such an inspirational band that influenced so many of my favourite bands of 90's Alternative and beyond.
This album is pretty great, although I have been listening to their album a lot more this past year.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
Meh
Joni Mitchell
1/5
Naw... Just can't get into Joni Mitchell
The Jesus And Mary Chain
4/5
Good dark atmosphere
Fleet Foxes
4/5
I used to be into this hipster folk stuff... It's not bad though, but there was some garbage albums from that era.
Various Artists
4/5
For such a violent and weird psycho that Phil Spector was, he sure knew how to inspire The Ramones... They are not on this album though.
Radiohead
5/5
Radiohead is pretty much 'S' Tier from this album and up.
White Denim
4/5
Randy Newman
3/5
How is it this guys early work has the sound of Toy Story soundtrack, but with fucked up lyrics? This is weird... But is actually not bad.
Beatles
3/5
Its ok
Tito Puente
3/5
I'm currently in a bit of a bit of Samba/Calypso stage of my music listening life right now, so this fit in pretty nicely... 3.5 Stars
Astrud Gilberto
4/5
Love me some Samba
Eric Clapton
2/5
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Good album
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
3/5
Pretty decent Punjab music
Jack White
3/5
This ain't no White Strips, and it's noticable.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
I find it hilarious how this band from California is revered in the culture of Confederate South Eastern United States, a culture that is polar opposite of what California represents... It's kind of like how Kid Rock is a rich kid from the suburbs near Detroit, or how Bruce Springsteen is a "Blue Collar" musician... Maybe I'm wrong? At least they're music was pretty good some of the time
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
2/5
It might be Prog Rock, but that doesn't mean that it's a good idea to add a Live album to a list of 1001 Albums in ANY reference... With the exception of Classical music and maybe 8 other Live albums (7 which I doubt you put on this 1001 list).
Stop adding Live albums!!!
Sonic Youth
5/5
Sonic Youth is a perfect example of what Alternative Music was, before the genre became a contradiction of it's namesake (which, bands like Sonic Youth helped to bring to fruition).
Anywho... This is a really good album and I am loving being forced back into Sonic Youth's discography.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
2/5
Meh
Neil Young
3/5
This is quite the polarizing album for me. A couple of hits that I find god awful, and some random songs that hugely impressed me (definitely can see how a couple of these lesser known songs have influenced bands in the punk and early alternative scenes).
Sebadoh
4/5
Klaxons
5/5
Love me that Dance Punk/New Rave sound.
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Pretty standard Led Zeppelin affair
Travis
3/5
Meh... It's definitely from the UK
The Who
3/5
What the hell did I just endure? It was a journey of both ends of the Good vs Bad spectrum.
Harry Nilsson
3/5
The ratio of Lime being added to the Coconut is about a 3.5
Little Richard
4/5
Little Richard is the EPITOME of the sound of traditional Rock & Roll. Say what you want in these modern times about this guy's music, but he is the reason modern music exists, and is in my opinion the most influential person in musical history.
Plus he had more energy than a 6 year old in a candy shop during the time period Elvis imploded on the toilet.
Baaba Maal
3/5
Yup, good.
Fairport Convention
5/5
This album really hooked me... Has a real Jefferson Airplane (not Starship) vibe, and I can appreciate it for being both similar and being unique.
I'd be stupid not to give this 4.65 stars
Ray Charles
3/5
He was hilarious as the bus driver in the movie Spy Hard
Brian Eno
2/5
Hugely influential artist... 2 Stars
The Divine Comedy
3/5
At first I thought "Dear God! Who the hell would put a SECOND album (let alone ONE) from this guy on a list of the top 1001 albums? STUPID"
I still think that, but at least this album was much better than the last one I was asked to rate.
Gil Scott-Heron
5/5
Gil Scott-Heron is a badass
Meat Loaf
4/5
That album cover art is so awesome. The songs sound nothing like the album cover art... Until you hear Paradise By The Dashboard Light and realize this album is meant to be played in a proper 70's boogie can as a means for romance.
It's sexy in a HAHAHA kind of way.
Christine and the Queens
4/5
Average pop affair.
The only reason it's 2 stars is because Dâm-Funk is one of my favourite DJ/Producers.
EDIT: I took a second listen, and it's actually pretty decent for being an "above" average pop album. 3 stars and Dâm-Funk takes it to 4 stars.
Emmylou Harris
1/5
No artist or band that started in the late 60s and early 70s went on to create anything noteworthy in the 00's and beyond... With the SOLE exception of David Bowie.
She is definitely not David Bowie.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
4/5
Californians play the blues
Coldcut
3/5
Sounds like 1990 electronic music from Europe/UK
Rod Stewart
2/5
Sounds like something a fan of Rod Stewart would like
Steve Winwood
2/5
Even though I grew up absolutely hating this style of music, I do want to go sailing.
Willie Nelson
3/5
Willie coming across stoned as Sesame Street on this album
Buck Owens
3/5
Got a soft spot for old school country
Dexys Midnight Runners
3/5
Was expecting a bunch of Eileen songs, but was surprised by the ska... I like ska.
Elton John
3/5
Pretty standard Elton John affair.
Femi Kuti
4/5
I've been diving into a lot of Afro-beat lately, so this suggestion hit at the right time. It's good, but I do enjoy his dad's work a wee bit more.
Penguin Cafe Orchestra
3/5
This is the kind of album you buy on vinyl to be unique and know that it's has complexity to it's many layers... Then one day youre having friends over for drinks and one of them asks why this album is still wrapped in plastic and should we put it on, and you give a hard pass as you know it's not the right time or place to put it on... It's never the right time or place.
3 Stars
The Doors
5/5
Had this album on repeat (for lack of many alternate CDs) during a Baja surf/road trip, so I'm pretty biased here... Brings back memories.
Depeche Mode
5/5
In the humble words of Matt Stone's character within the cinematic masterpiece known as 'Orgazmo':
-"I don't mean to sound like a... or nothin, but I think Depeche Mode is a sweet band".
The Undertones
4/5
There's just something about early punk I love
The Auteurs
4/5
Sounds good to me
Isaac Hayes
5/5
Mr. 'Chef' himself in his second release is down right funky as hell.
Miles Davis
3/5
Man, how high were people in 1970?
Just a lot of extremely talented musicians getting all random and "experimental" with the instruments, resulting in the types who look at a banana duct taped to the wall and declare the plight of struggling Tibetan dental assistants being represented by the contrast of the bruises and the colour yellow... It's extremely pretentious, yet is still decent enough to enjoy on some weird levels. I hated this type of jazz as a kid.
The album name and art is really good.
The Velvet Underground
4/5
I had much lower expectations, and it was pretty decent (technically an unrelated note: I hate Andy Warhol)
Roxy Music
3/5
That album cover is saying something... I don't know what it is apart from "sex sells", but it's definitely got a statement.
Music is meh
Peter Gabriel
3/5
Odd how much Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins sound like the same person
X-Ray Spex
5/5
Whenever 70/80's punk pops up (NOT The Sex Pistols), it's just a great listen. Poly Styrene is a great lead and a roll model for females in the punk movement.
Jimmy Smith
3/5
Love the name of the album
Elliott Smith
5/5
I have a weird relationship with listening to Elliott Smith... Sometimes it's nice, other times it's awful, and most of the time I just don't need his depression overshadowing my own feelings of whatever odd existentialism I've got going on, so I rarely visit his sad and slow discography... But here I am, feeling like I'm not quite in the dimension I am supposed to be in and I find an Elliott Smith album I really appreciate at a 5 star level? Something ain't right.
Adele
3/5
Someone else's review of this album claims: "Four of the songs on this album are about ham" and proceeded to give it 3 stars... I can appreciate that statement.
Little Simz
4/5
Spitting decent rhymes and actually playing instruments. Yes, please.
I really like Little Simz even though I have been disappointed by most UK rappers I've heard (with the exception of MF DOOM. Ya, he was British)
Frank Sinatra
2/5
Unless it's December, and he's singing Christmas Carols... He better only be singing Fly Me To The Moon or My Way.
The Smiths
2/5
Best review: "I ate a giant burger after listening to this. Take that Morrissey!!"
Morrissey sucks and this album is nowhere near as good as what The Cure offers.
FKA twigs
3/5
It was something special upon release, but now is pretty standard.
Grizzly Bear
3/5
I remember having tickets to see these guys in Vancouver for this album tour. Needless to say I didn't make it. It was a good precursor to the Hipster overabundance of "stomp stomp clap" movement that tried to make Folk a good time (it never is).
Taylor Swift
1/5
Leonard Cohen
3/5
About what I expect from Leonard Cohen
Gang Of Four
5/5
Arguably the most underrated album ever.
Portishead
5/5
Was going to give it 4 stars because it's been a while since I heard this album, but nope, it's definitely worth the 5 it deserves.
808 State
3/5
Got that house sound from 1990 I was expecting
Finley Quaye
3/5
One quote from another individual really stood out for me about this album.
"Bro who even is this guy. I google his name and the first result is "Finley Quaye found guilty for headbutting terminally ill friend over Game of Thrones" and the image is some black-and-white Gilbert Gottfried lookalike (rest in peace by the way) and Peter Dinklage. Then the literal next result is "Finley Quaye admits criminal damage after he threw metal road sign through glass bus door". The third result is "Finley Quaye threatened to stab cop and 'get a grenade' for bar manager he vowed to shoot"."
Otherwise, this is not a good reggae album... But is a 2.5 stars album based on being something else.
Sonic Youth
5/5
I've been playing Sonic Youth on repeat for the past year, so I'm obviously going to give most of their albums 4 or 5 stars... Their name was always on my radar in the early 90s, but I was too into the grunge stuff to notice the real good alternative bands that emerged from the late 70s punk scene into the 80s collage rock scene, but I am sure glad to give them their due diligence now that I can still appreciate them.
Stevie Wonder
5/5
One of the best albums ever made... Simple.
I was going to make a "Stevie, if you're reading this..." jokes, but figured that was extremely poor taste.
Peter Frampton
3/5
Some songs I sing on occasion, too bad it's a live album.
The Modern Lovers
4/5
Someone DEFINITELY loved The Velvet Underground but gave it a monotone flavour of The Stooges. I can see why No Dogs In Space podcast was going to do an series on these guys... I prefer Television.
Beck
5/5
When Beck released his first album, I hated it. But then I get hit by Two Turn Tables & A Microphone and I've never looked back. This album is one of my favourites.
Joy Division
4/5
Love me some fun goth music, especially from the group that basically started the genre... But I couldn't help feeling that Unknown Pleasures is more than simply one of the best album covers of all time, it's also the better album (personally) from Joy Division.
Bob Dylan
1/5
Just "NO"
Tim Buckley
3/5
I obviously didn't listen to the lyrics as much as I probably should have (sounds like this Tim guy might be a bit of a dick?). But, aside from that, It was hit and miss.
Beatles
4/5
This album WOULD be 5 stars, but they took a bunch of drugs in India and someone thought it'd be a good idea to let Ringo sing a really REALLY bad kids song about a colourful submersible.
Tomorrow Never Knows is a good time.
Brian Eno
2/5
Talking Heads On Meth?
Abdullah Ibrahim
2/5
Sounds like Jazz... But, less than (maybe it's me? But I get the feeling it's not).
The Pogues
3/5
Seeing as it's St. Patrick's Day and I'm rating this particular album, I'll give it 3.5 stars as I'm indifferent to The Pogues.
Roxy Music
3/5
I could see how this would be a good influence on music that came after... But it's messy in a bad way.
AC/DC
5/5
It's straight forward ACDC... 5 stars.
