Quite similar until the last few tracks. Liked cure for the itch. 6/10
Very fresh given its more than 20 yeas old
Back to my youth. Love the sax
I’m sure that I would like this as background music in Waitrose…. Our House is just a bit too soppy….
Very dated. I’ve listened to it now. Move on.
Bit of a hidden gem. Liked the very chilled vibe
France has produced many great things. This is not one of them .
My uni mate loved Metallica. He tried for a number of years to convince me. Never quite got there with Heavy Metal. Going 3 stars in honour of Jools!
Might come back to it one day
Not unpleasant but on the other hand nothing tha made me want to listen again
Very soothing but lacked in variety until the end with the re-record tracks that were really charming
Music needs to be give and take. There wasn’t a lot of give in this.
I didn’t realise Dylan could be so upbeat! Really enjoyed that and I might even listed again.
Bit of a nothing album built around one song that doesn’t really fit with the rest
I’d not listened to this before and really enjoyed the sound. Will go back.
Trying to be Nirvana and not succeeding.
When I first saw this, I was really optimistic but for me it just didn’t deliver. There were no real highs
Listened to this watching the sunrise over Mexico City. Gives it a bonus star.
Not as bad as i feared. Early 90’s rap seems a bit tame now!
Getting in to rap! Some great sounds but breaks the 1 hour rule on albums.
Great voice and a few bangers on the album
The scientist and clocks are ok. The rest is very middle of the road. 3* just.
Was waiting for something good to happen on this one. It didn’t. Heroine and European Son were particular low lights
Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. Accessible rap.
Friend of the Beatles. Worth an extra star
A friend of mine went to see Neil Young recently….
Sign of a great album is when you know the track that’s coming next
Hard to keep going after a banging start like that
Wasn’t really sure what to make of this
Very melancholy and not normally my thing but I listened twice
A couple of bangers but some mediocrity as well
Take 5 stars Dave Brubeck. Used to listen to this on long car journeys in France.
Got off to a good start but needed to stop after 45 mins. Became repetitive. Better than Serge though
I listened to it on a plane. Not sure if the engine noise made it better or worse
Bangers were front loaded but still a classic
I’d not heard the album before. A banging start is maintained with strong tracks throughout
Nothing bad about this album
Just a tad self indulgent at the end. But a real classic
Amazing how an album can have the same song 12 times with just the place name changed
In the words of a good friend of mine….. not for me
Enjoyed the variety and storytelling
Felt like this album lost its way. Tried to be all things to all people and ended up being none
Brillant lyrics and some banging tunes to boot
Not heard the album before and a sound of the time. Will definitely listen again
Great lyrics and a simple but wonderful sound
I enjoyed it more than when it was first released
Another album where the lyrics shine through
It had a good start and I was hopeful that the beat would keep up but it fell away for me
Like a fine wine, it seems to have got better with age.
Goes well with a nice cup of tea
It didn’t communicate with me
Not wild about this and quite noisy
I’m with the Beatles on this one but I think they have another level to go
Given this is 55 years old, it’s still feels very fresh. Moondance is a classic and the standard throughout is high.
A couple of interesting tracks and an engaging tune throughout. However not good enough to break the 1 hour rule so loses a star for that
This is one of the 1001 that has surprised me. Rod’s vocals are awesome and the production keeps it really fresh. Would listen again.
S’alright i s’pose. Not a lot of Rainbow colour
Interesting album. At the start I wondered whether I was still listening to Radiohead but I enjoyed the twists and turns as the album evolved
The first track didn’t set the tone for wha was actually a good solid album which grew on me as it went on.
Twangy and jolly but I didn’t get much depth
Made me smile on my way to work. Solid 3
Not sure the lyrics hold up today. Not that sensational. Next…
I enjoyed the tempo of the album but couldn’t quite get right into it. Shane
Not their best but nevertheless a great of it’s Thyme
Strong début album and a sign of things to come.
Quite literally a different class from start to finish
Great to come back to this
I only really became aware of John Grant last year when GMF came up on a playlist. I really enjoyed this - a very distinctive voice. Thank you 1001, I will definitely come back to this album
No better or worse than the last Band album which only seems like a few days ago
Like listening to music in soft focus and pastel colours eating jelly babies and drinking sherry. Nice until you vomit. Yellow rescues it a bit.
Presenting 1001 albums sponsored by Joni Mitchell and The Band
Scraping the barrel 1001.
I know I should be law abiding but I’ve never quite synchronised with the police
Stripped back and simple but still captivating. Definitely IV stars. Might have been 5 if it hadn’t been for Danny Boy. Which shouldn’t be on any album. Ever.
A bit like the Bee Gees does musicals
Difficult one to score. You could forgive any band for saying “my work here is done” after writing Bohemian Rhapsody. In the case of this album it was. The rest (which a couple of exceptions) is dire - an afterthought
Thank you 1001 for reminding me of the Pogues and an extra star for the best ever Christmas track.
Exactly how I imagine the sixties were
I’m perhaps being harsh here, but there wasn’t anything memorable about this album
This was significantly better than I feared after the first chord of the first song!
Not quite as good as I remember but still full of bangers. It’s definitely, not a maybe.
Good first half, poor second (opposite of Leeds last night). Only Alright.
Thank you 1001. Gravelly, fresh and thoughtful
Very cohen but nothing on the album that grabs you by the short and curlies
I used to really like this album but maybe more for when it was in my life than the album itself. A few really good tracks but quite a lot not.
I like Green Day a lot and American Idiot would make my 1001 always. This is very much in style, but maybe just a tad samey?
There is a reason why people don’t buy albums. That’s because they are not very good. This is a good example of that. This album, like a lettuce has not got better with time.
Some really good lyrics and an inoffensive sound
He’s better with his mate
I wasn’t really into The The at the time but I may well come back to this. Distinctive sound
This would never normally be on my playlist but full of bangers and surprises
Listen and learn 1001. I feel guilty that this can only get 5 stars. Packed with beautiful vocals and ageless tunes.
It was always going to be difficult to follow “Rumours”. I’ve never heard of the Meat Puppets and I tried to be open minded but found the album disjointed lacking any musicality. Glad to get to the end
Didn’t make me want to listen more, felt like a chore
This one surprised me. I didn’t want to like it, but listened to it twice and will definitely come back. Really innovative and takes you away from reality
What is it with albums named after the band? Better with Young.
Very strong lyrics and tracks that flow from one to the next.
Fabulous 80’s vibe. Plenty of sax and a few bangers. A 3* but hey let’s go Plus One…
I like Jazz but there are only so many times I can snigger at musical instruments making fart noises.
I liked this. Good to have something from this century. A bridge from the 80’s
So disappointed with this. Self indulgent and rambling. It’s only because she has a great voice that it’s not 1*
High hopes dashed by a bizarre second half of the album
So, Peter on consecutive days. This was much better. Red Rain sets the tone and what follows keeps up the quality
A grudging 3 for the novelty and lyrics but unlikely to spend much more time listening to this.
This did not make me smile. There is no place for sheep noises and pop whistles on any album let alone one that is in the 1001. A grudging 2* because he is a legend
I grew into this. I’m not sure “space rock” is a genre, but this was very listenable
Not heard this before but a real mix - liked it
I like a build up to a song, but 10 minutes is a bit much. Nevertheless, lots of class.
Listened to this twice and I’m still not sure. It’s a transition album for me.
Stated well and felt fresh for its time. Unfortunately fresh turned to odd in the second half.
Like meeting up with an old friend
A couple of bangers at the start and at the time was very different. It hasn’t aged as well as a fine wine but still a good listen
What are you doing Divine Comedy. There is a reason this only got to 104 in the album charts. A punishing listen
It seems as though this album is trying to burst out into something more than it is but just does ever quite do it.
A great band. An ok album
This didn’t take me to a 5th dimension…
A tad overproduced but a gripping way to pass half a train journey to Leeds.
I found this album so mixed. I found myself drifting away in Blues only to be suddenly woken by some harsh lyrics. Not sure I can cope with the inconsistency.
Brilliant but loses a star for length
Coldplay without the whining. Enjoyed this.
Should have stuck to Bond movies. Dull and long
A Different Class was so good that subsequent albums were always going to be difficult.
A score to match the album
