Album Summary
Slayed? is the third studio album by the British rock group Slade. It was released on 1 November 1972 and reached No. 1 in the UK. It remained on the chart for 34 weeks and was certified Silver in early 1973. The album was also the band's most successful of the 1970s in the US, peaking at No. 69 and remaining in the charts for 26 weeks. In Australia, the album reached No. 1 and went Gold, knocking the band's live album Slade Alive! to No. 2. Slayed? was produced by Chas Chandler. In 2010, Classic Rock considered the album an "essential classic", adding that it featured "party-hard tracks, and even something approaching a ballad with "Look at Last Nite", ensuring that Slayed? inarguably ticks all the right boxes." The Guardian noted the album's singles and other tracks as being "deservedly party riff monsters", but added: "Slayed?'s majesty lies in the melancholy ballads. "Look at Last Nite's" haunting refrain fingers both empty celebrity and fame's creeping downside."

Man, this album rocks! I especially enjoyed the Janice Joplin cover, they absolutely killed it. Pure fun energy start to finish.
I just wish they knew how to spell better 🤪
Overall this felt like good enjoyable rock. Nothing mind blowing, though that could be the quality of something recorded so long ago. I did like Gudbuy T' Jane and Mama Weer All Crazee Now. But can we talk about spelling? It's over the top. It loses meaning and impact when it's every single song.
Enjoyed it ok. Not sure why they are on the list. Couple of good songs.
I was forced to listen to this on YouTube. What an awful experience. Ads between every song. Such a shitty platform anymore. That has nothing to do with this album, just a small tirade at how much Google sucks now. This is a good album of straight rock & roll. It didn't knock me over, but I enjoyed listening to it. Their spelling leaves something to be desired, but it's entertaining.
Fun.
They're a decent rock band, but Noddy's voice just makes everything sound like a novelty song. Maybe that's because I've been listening to the same 4 Slade songs for (checks notes) about 55 years.
First off, fantastic cover art. I haven't heard a lot from these guys, but there's just something I like. Just a band not taking themselves too seriously. Bet they ripped in concert. I'm Mee, I'm Now, An' That's Orl stood out. I liked the change of sound in Kill Em At the Hot Club Tonite 3.5/5
5/10
I had never heard of Slade. This album won me over completely. What a fun rock group! The misspelled names give a general cheesiness to the affair, while the tunes contain a nice mix of hard rock and casual singing. The expanded edition I listened to also included some ad promos they did for Melanie readers, which reminded me of Spinal Tap something fierce. Just all around good fun. Added to liked list: How D’You Ride, Look at Last Nite, Move Over, Gudbuy T’Jane, Mama Weer All Crazee Now, I Don’t Mind, Wonderin’Y, Man Who Speeks Evil
Generic and inoffensive
2.5 some really nice energy at times
While listening, I noted: Kinda reminds me of Nazareth or Quiet Riot. And then once I was done listening, I looked them up on Wikipedia and discovered that they were the original performers of Cum On Feel The Noize, which makes a lot of sense, and is probably what I'm thinking of with the Quiet Riot similarity. Anyway, this album had some really wide variation in terms of depth of musicality and emotions. On one hand, there were rockin' arena anthems and on the other there were harmonically complex, minor key, ballads, some of which were in odd time signatures with multiple key changes and meter changes. I found their depth and range very nice, even if the lead singer's voice was usually grating and not very pleasant to listen to. I listened twice and enjoyed myself. Four stars.
Saw the cover and the glam rock tag and instantly began dreading listening and that though was completely on the money. Temu AC/DC but their British so their mystery inclusion on this list immediately becomes clear with the seeming bias with the author for shitty British bands no one remembers. Boring instrumentals and just awful vocals. The screaming in particular is just fucking miserable to hear. I could not listen to this full thing its so fucking bad. This piece of shit ruined my morning and I wish I could erase my memory of this ever existing.
Boeit me vrij weinig.
Het nummer I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a 'Rap' Album but This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time had ik toen het album uitkwam al een paar keer gehoord. Ja.
unremarkable
Amongst all the crazy spelling and Christmas related stuff, it’s easy to forget that Slade could actually rock out as well This might not be sophisticated or cool, but it’s not half bad either. There is some decent straight ahead rock and roll and I appreciate that sort of thing. And was surprised by how much I enjoyed it I’m not coming back to listen every week, but it’s half decent you know
Ok rock
Never heard of them. Kinda liked it.
I actually quite liked this
Gudbuy t’this. Ok. It’s ok 2-3
Not sure what's so special about this album. Sounds pretty generic to me.
Very Led Zeppelin-ish. Meh. 2
Holy shit rock and roll baby
What a band Slade were.. Very fun stuff indeed, maybe a bit outdated though, but fun, quite easily 3 stars for me.
1/5, couldn’t finish this one
Fun and enjoyable but a little samey by the end and lots of the songs were pretty repetitive. I think I’d enjoy some of these songs in a playlist but I don’t think I’d come back to the album again. Fav song: Gudbuy T'Jane Least fav: How D'You Ride
Cover and title is so much funnier than when it was originally out and I love it. Weirdly it just made me think of their Christmas song and got me in the mood for that. Pretty good rock otherwise. Specific rating - 4.2 Fav song - gudbuy t’Jane Least fav - kill em at the club tonite
I likd the musik but not the spllign of the song tytles: "Gudbuy" and "Crazee" especiallee annoy mi. Great energy and despite what the spelling wants you to think it's quite tidy rock- very structured, maybe occasionally bordering on repetitive, but mostly just fun. I think they would hate what the word slay has come to represent. Favourite song: Mama Weer All Crazee Now Leest: Let the Good Times Roll/ Feels so Fine
If you removed the folk and blues elements from the sound of Led Zeppelin along with a good chunk of the intelligence, you would get something that sounds like Slade. I don't mean that as a complete insult, these guys are here to deliver stomping rockers and they do this very well. The glamed up hard rock sound is consistent and they don't mix up their formula too much. The crashing guitars on "Move Over" sounded very heavy for 1972. Growing up on the rough streets of Wolverhampton, there is an everyman quality to Slade's music that doesn't have a lick of pretension over it. At times their bone-headedness can be grating, but they aren't trying to be anything that they're not and they just want you to be entertained. When they sing about letting the good times roll, they really mean it.
This is at least 30 minutes too long.
So that’s who influenced AC/DC! They also sounded like the Beatles on some tracks. Cool.
Rock muzak, seriously some uninteresting trash
There are better versions of the same. There's sometimes a reason bands don't get popular in the USA.
mid af unfortunately
wauhhhh
This album sounds like bluesy hair metal. At least, the singer's voice strongly lends to the hair metal vibe. It's not really my genre; my parents liked to listen to this kind of music, and it's just okay to me. The lyrics and songs here are very repetitive. I'll say "I Don't Mind" was the best song on here.
Meh. The Led Zep influence is palpable, and the only good part of the album.
classic slade. 70s light rock and roll.
This album snatches a lot of different pieces of the zeitgeist. There's plenty of classic hard rock here and even bits of the Beatles and other contemporary bands. Unfortunately, I think the result is something a little too disjointed and aimless. There's some pretty decent stuff here, but I'm not sure I could pick this out from a lineup of other classic rock, and I'm unlikely to pick this album up for listening again. My problem with this album is that it often feels derivative, and even more often it is kind of boring. When I look back at this project in a few months, I predict that I will not remember ever having listened to this album at all. Favorite track: "Look at Last Nite"
I don't know what it is but I find the caveman way of spelling all of these song titles so endearing. I know it's all fer tha pursona er wutever, but it's reely fun to type like this. The music's pretty fun, too, albeit very distinctly early 70s. Still, they're all having fun, and much like all music where the artists are clearly having fun with it, I am too.

I think this is one of those: "They are an influential band from that era so we better include one album. Which one? What sold the most? Ok, put that one in" type of thing. So perhaps their album was the most influential despite other tracks being currently more popular on Spotify. At least I have heard of Slade. None of the songs on this album particularly but some of their later tracks still had some party staying power (when I was young at least). Giving them (another) 3 just for the songs that aren't here mainly. After the album was over did have to play their greatest hits. Cum on feel the noize! That's 3 hair metal stars. Run, run away.
I took a while to hear something interesting. Sometimes they figure it out, sometimes it’s just generic 70s rock
Not good, but pretty essential rock & or roll. Big crybabies in the negative reviews.
Come on, it’s rock n roll, it’s a good time. It’s catchy. Yeah it’s dumb, but it definitely plays up to that, and rock n roll kinda can be dumb fun. They predate ACDC, were one of the biggest bands in Britain in the early 70s, not making a comment on these things just saying as fact. I like dumb rock on occasion and I liked this today, In fact it helped what was a difficult morning, just some shout out loud rock n roll. 4 Star
Likt'n jeg
I mean, I feel that's pretty generic.
Mmm lo intenté y no conecté.
The global reviews really hate this, and I think a lot of it is due to the alternate spelling that plagues this album. I mean, first impressions are also a bit tough with those haircuts, especially the shirtless fella with the dad barrel bod on the far right. Nevertheless, this wasn't actually all that bad. Feels like some pretty typical early 70s glam rock.
The album cover really betrays the music. It's good/decent and the haters need to lighten up.
Powered by an unearthly vocal that carries the intensity of a steam train.
did not slay
So, a 70s British rock band that can't spell their song titles properly. It's a pretty fun rock album with a little bit of edge and raunch to it. It's as dumb as you would expect an album with these horribly misspelled titles to be, but it's fun. Most of the album is built off of Brit-blues riffage("white man blues"), with the vocals having a similar boogie rock quality to them. It's not life-changing, but it is ok for a listen once in a while. This album is ranked #29 of 31 albums released in 1972. Other 1972 albums rated by me: Ziggy Stardust(abbreviated title)(1/31)-4 Vol. 4(4/31)-5 Can't Buy A Thrill(5/31)-4 Talking Book(6/31)-4 Superfly(7/31)-4 Machine Head(11/31)-5 Paul Simon(12/31)-4 All Directions(13/31)-4 Home Is Where The Music Is(14/31)-4 The World Is A Ghetto(15/31)-4 Eagles(16/31)-4 #1 Record(20/31)-5 School's Out(22/31)-3 Manassas(25/31)-2 Something/Anything?(26/31)-3 American Gothic(31/31)-2
I'm so sick of all this glam garbage, and this is genuinely one of the worst ones yet. My main issue among many with this genre has always been the vocals, they are just so annoying and screechy. With some bands I can maybe just about forgive the singer as it does sometimes seem plausible that their voice "just happens to sound like that" (although that won't make me want to listen to their music), but with this it's so obvious that he's putting on the voice completely on purpose. Like they made the concious effort to make their music annoying as fuck when they were probably fully capable of making something half decent.
Nah, not the best sound of the 70’s
Solider und unspektakulärer Rock der 70er.
Glam Rock/Hard Rock Favorite Song (Although I’m not going to be sending them over to my music library): Look at Last Nite Least Favorite Song: The Whole World’s Goin’ Crazee Honestly, why is this album on the list? No, seriously. I’m not the type of person who complains about whether or not if an album should be in the that 1001 Albums book, but with the exception of that last album (to which I just thought it’s good and someone could make the argument about it), I thought that it was a bit…bad. The songs are mostly boring, and the mixing was kinda bad. The vocals were too loud to where it kinda drowns the guitars. And as one user on this site pointed out, it sounded like they’re AC/DC, except they weren’t innovative enough to stand out. Idk, it’s just…kinda bleh. 4/10, though I’m a bit skeptical if I should’ve just made it 3/10.
honestly this is probably a 2-3 star album for me personally but I'm bumping it up to 4 stars because I feel like it's being dogpiled by humorless dorks lol
Why on earth is this here.
Proto arena hair. Gudbuy.
Quite good and catchy, thx
Not too bad, “oh these are the guys that made the original Cum On Feel the Noize”. Some good songs, but they’re “too British” for this American 🦅🇺🇸
Rating: 4.4/5 Short Review: Loud, stomping, stupidly fun glam rock. Slade aren’t trying to be sophisticated here, they just make everything sound enormous. Noddy Holder’s voice is fucking ridiculous. A little repetitive, but that almost feels like the point. Favorite Track: Gudbuy T’Jane
It’s aged terribly, and probably wasn’t all that pretty the day it was born, but that said you can hear all the bits Noel stole to make records I love so I can’t fully hate it.
decent but not outstanding classic rock album
Meh. I came into this thinking Slade were pretty cool, but it's all a bit much in a full album form.
Eh
Yea the album was pedestrian at best
Tämähän oli oikeastaan aika hyvä rokkilevy. Useampi tutun kuuloinen biisi oli. Energistä meininkiä eikä liian vakavaa. Myöhemmin 80-luvulla Quiet Riot teki uran versioimalla Sladen hittejä.
Just…no.
This is so shockingly generic and average across the board that if it released today, I’d wonder if it was actually AI generated. The singer sounds like he’s purposely trying to imitate a number of better singers, and the guitar is so understated on all of these songs, I barely register it’s even there occasionally. Ask AI to generate something that sounds like a less charismatic AC/DC and this is what you’re left with. Side note: Please don’t actually use AI for anything that should be used for creativity, the world will rightfully think less of you for it. This album isn’t terrible, but god damn. Why is it here?? What even is this generic album, and what is this band?? Is this “British flash in the pan band #500” that the author included simply because he remembered them existing out of the blue?? Not a terrible album, but it’s not good either. For certain, I’m giving it a 3. This was one of those albums where I finished it, and my only thought was that “Yeah, that sure was an album, and I sure did listen to it for an hour”. What the hell is going on in “I'm Mee, I'm Now, An' That's Orl”?? I’m so confused at what I’m listening to. It’s just a bunch of songs mashed together with the band thanking the public for supporting them. It’s not even a real song. Was this on the original release of the album?? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a band doing something like that before, but it was really weird and offputting, especially considering it even included songs that had been played on the actual album itself. Seriously, what the hell was that???? Update: Spotify put the interview from the end of the album over the actual correct song, surprisingly. So the same interview is mislabeled and plays twice. It was done in error clearly, and now everything makes sense. I’ll still leave in the rambling to pad out this review, but I’ve never seen Spotify mess something up like that before. Weird. The actual song is still just very average and generic as a whole, but now I see why I was confused initially. My favorite song on this album, if I had to pick, would be “Move Over”, as it did some fun things with the guitar. This is going to be out of my head by tomorrow. It’s just painfully average and kind of annoying. I don’t particularly love the singers voice. You’re not AC/DC little bro. A 3/5.
Are songs about how crazy it is being in a rock n roll band a sign that maybe you lack a little creativity? They say write what you know, I guess.
This album had a few moments that weren’t too bad, but honestly, it also embodies everything I find distasteful and trashy about 70s tough guy glam rock. The whole time I couldn’t shake the mental image of the lifestyle this music seems to celebrate, like shirtless dudes in cut-off jeans, chugging cheap piss-water beer, ripping gas and belching like it’s a show of masculinity, all while parking their fleet of broken down cars in the front yard. So yeah… I’d definitely say this album took me on a journey, but just maybe not one I’d want to take again.
The singer wants to be Robert Plant but isn't close, the songs are boring and pointless, and I refuse to acknowledge their dumbass spelling
Feels like a reluctant 3.5. Most is not great, but good enough to sometimes cause a toe tap.
The Faces meet Sweet? Fun, innocuous stuff. Not out to change the world.
1050 - "Here's your juice box and orange slice. Thanks for coming."
#245 Heard Before? Nope. I think I saw it in a book of bad album covers. Notes: - we brits, funny innit? - big dumb riff after big dumb riff combined with drunken gang vocals comes off as fun or grating depending on my mood. Verdict: Glam rock without the glamour. Listen Again? Nope.
Not sure if this was a 2+ or 3-. It was fine, as glam rock goes, but not groundbreaking or that enjoyable to listen to.
This is not the music for me
There’s plenty of reviews that already state the sentiments I feel. This is pretty bland classic rock with little creativity
This is Spinal Tap. This is entirely be a joke right? That's cool. I could handle 30secs of the joke. Any more and the joke is on me.
A stomping, rollicking gem of an album from a band I hadn't heard before. Nothing too original but lots of hooky choruses and fine hooting and hollering with the volume up to 11. The singer is pretty over the top but it fits the music and it works. Points deducted for the stupid song titles though.
Listened to the original tracklist of 10 songs only because a little goes a long way. Not bad 70s hard rock. Got a little bored of the singer's Robert Plant impression, and also fuck off with the deliberately butchered titles - but has enjoyable moments. Not a regular rotation kind of band for me but I don't mind it.
Solid 70s rock
Never really given Slade a proper listen. Very iconic, very British, but very good stuff. Not the most amazing, but glad to have listened to it, and definitely appreciate it.
Slade were chart toppers in my youth, but I only ever heard their singles. Well, as it transpired I was delighted to be reacquainted with Noddy Holder's wonderfully enthusiastic vocals. The singles on here (I played a deluxe edition) were by far the best. I don't really think Slade were really an album band, and they weren't really a sophisticated band!
I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. This is a glam rock album from the early 70s. It has some nice moments, including a cover of Janis Joplin's Move Over, but overall this album is good but not great. I may listen again because I like the genre, but there's nothing particularly groundbreaking here for me.
I'm sorry but why does every song sound identical? The album is...okay. But it's not original or interesting, just okay. The tracks sound slightly watered-down, the band is cohesive but I feel like they could do better.
It's fine for what it is. I didn't mind listening to it and even found myself bopping along at a few points. It didn't especially blow me away though.
Do you wanna listen to a band that sounds like four or five bands you know really well? Only, you haven’t heard of this one and also they make worse songs?
This is ok. Pretty standard glam rock, maybe like T. Rex with more hard rock mixed in. Guitar and bass tones are pretty nice Highlights: Move Over
Nice. Finally another rock n roll album. I enjoyed it but it wasn't mind blowing. I'd give it another listen for sure though.
it was so great - wasn’t expecting that
This would have been a good glam rock album if the vocals weren't so annoying. Like bro is not Robert Plant. It's a high 3, because at least the instrumentals sound good.
Yeah, sure, this album’s influential. It influenced butt. They don’t even know how to spell
