Album Summary

All Mod Cons is the third studio album by the British band The Jam, released in 1978 by Polydor Records. The title, a British idiom one might find in housing advertisements, is short for "all modern conveniences" and is a pun on the band's association with the mod revival. The album reached No. 6 in the UK Albums Chart. The album was reissued in the United States in 1979, with the song "The Butterfly Collector" replacing "Billy Hunt".

#259/1001 🇬🇧 I'll never tire of hearing this record. For me this is when the Jam really stepped up to become of the best bands of the time. Musically, there is no fat, Bruce Foxton's rolling baselines are as important as Weller's guitar. 48 years on and English Rose still sounds perfect, then shortly after we get Its Too Bad - the breakup song. The best is saved for last with A-Bomb on Wardour Street and Down In the Tubestation... 2 incendiary tracks about life in London. Best Tracks: Down In The Tubestation at Midnight, English Rose, Fly, A-Bomb on Wardour Street, Its Too Bad, The Place I Love.

Very listenable, I can see why they were a big deal

never once heard of this band but I liked this album

I did not know this band. Some good tunes. Overall a good album.

This is not my favorite Jam record, but it does have some great songs, and it does feel more mature than their two earlier records. I personally prefer either the one before this or an even later album where I think they find something even more interesting as they got further away from the punk sound. I can't really confidently say which of their albums I think everyone should hear, as I'd need to listen to all of them again, but I do believe everyone should hear The Jam.

All Mod Cons is a great mod revival album. Its a real blend of punk and British pop. Another throw back to my teenage years.

Although have a best of, ive never listened to this album and really like it. Very catchy punky songs 33 84% 4.5 stars but 4 here

another boring album from paul weller

Another day, another British punk/new wave album. This was fine.

Another pleasant surprise of an album. I wasn’t expecting much from this (almost) 50 year old album but I have to admit I enjoyed it. There were obvious influences of punk rock but nothing over the top. The music was good and the vocals kept me interested. I don’t know that this will make my normal rotation, but I wouldn’t shy away from it either.

Hey look, it’s another British punk-adjacent band getting an uninspiring 3.

Really good band. Great mash of punk and new wave, well banalced sound. Actually gave it a couple listens and liked it more each time. Not quite a 4, I think their sound doesn't stand out quite enough for that. But a very high 3

Good stuff, but not quite great.

Didn’t blow me away but a solid listen overall

It was alright. I can hear a few things I like in it, but I guess that I couldn't give it the attention it deserves.

Streckenweise ganz cool, verliert mich aber irgendwann.

Die Solosachen von Paul Weller mag ich noch lieber. Wenn es hier zu rockig wird, ist das nicht mehr so meins.

It's decent but a bit samey. Enjoyed it but nothing really stood out except the last track.

It was fine.

7/10 Ok, but I thought I'd have enjoyed it more. Just a bit flat in places.

The whole time I’m thinking to myself ah yes this is post punk I can finally identify the sound correctly for sure. And then I look up this album to see that it was published in 1978 and I start second guessing myself. These guys were pretty clever with some of the sounds they worked into this thing, maybe being a few years ahead of the curve, maybe being right on time. “David Watts” was a trip because to my ears it kinda sounded like if The Beach Boys were a British punk band? Like the composition was very peppy and melodic but the sound was being filtered through The Jam. Very interesting. Then I forgot all about “English Rose”! How sweet of a song. I can’t even imagine how many folks have stuck this in their wedding ceremonies. As I’ve learned this year, writing a song thats as universally beloved as to be stuck in a wedding playlist is an accomplishment to be desired. I’m gonna go with a light 4/5 on this one. Perhaps because this serves as an exact opposite to that horrendous Associates album from yesterday, a poor attempt at imitation. On the other hand here, All Mod Cons has The Jam hitting all the right notes

Punk adjacent I guess. Not my thing

I like it. I’m engaged. The only songs of the Jam that I know aren’t on this album.

Thought it was pretty good though a tough dated. Probably lacked a killer track IMO. I enjoy listening to Paul Weller so I’m going to round up from 3.5 to 4.

Not entirely sure what to make of this one. I like it because punk is obviously its primary styling, but it doesn't feel aggressive or abrasive in the same way as the punk of this era which I tend to gravitate towards, or as catchy to my ears as it otherwise needed to be. There's a slight whiff of early R&B and Kinks-esque melodicism which is a bit lost on me, but I very much appreciated the socially conscious storytelling, particularly on a track such as "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight" which provides a tense narrative about right wing violence in the London Underground and has a real rhythmic tightness to it. A strong 3 stars all in all which I might re-evaluate down the line.

It's not bad, it just doesn't grab me. I'd rather listen to the kinks, talking heads, elvis costello, or the buzzcocks.

Nice British Post-Punk sound, first time listening to this album.

Review - I like The Jam but I feel like whenever I've tried a full album it gets a bit muddled and boring, this was sort of similar. The highpoints are very good but to me they're the quintessential "just listen to the greatest hits" band. Score - 6.5/10 Need to listen? NO

Another of my faves. 5 "dance all night" stars.

Some interesting grooves here but overall not something I have to listen to before I die

Did not like this one like at all, it just all basically droned on and on for me

It was a fun listen, but didn't seem exceptional. Decent way to spend half an hour or so.

Really solid album that sometimes feels ahead of its time. Lots of fun.

I didn't want to like it but it grew on me towards the end.

Me gusto

6/10 Buen album, acompaña bien pero no resalta

Started off ok and then somewhere around English Rose it got better. I actually checked to see if it was still playing the same album. I know this won't be well received but it reminded me some of Elvis Costello.

Early movement away from punk. Still some traces of punk on this album, but a good step towards the sounds that would become more popular in the coming decade. Unfortunately, nothing really great here to make the album stand out (the best one was the cover of the Kinks song "David Watts").

Down a tube Station at Midnight

Kommer knappt ihåg efter att jag lyssnat klart..

I thought this was going to suck for sure. Honestly, I’m pretty over it with Brit rock of just about any decade and genre at this point, just cause 1001 leans so heavy into it (and a lot of it sounds pretty similar and very little of it is actually memorable). But this is much better than expected. That said, I don’t think I’ll be re-listening anytime soon; it’s a good record, but I’m not dying to hear it again. 7.8/10

All Mod Cons - 83 To Be Someone (Didn't We Have A Nice Time) - 87 Mr. Clean - 78 David Watts - 76 English Rose - 92 In The Crowd - 79 Billy Hunt - 77 It's Too Bad - 83 Fly - 84 The Place I Love - 77 'A' Bomb In Wardour Street - 84 Down In The Tube Station At Midnight - 89 All Mod Cons - 80

Didnt found that interesting but i respect the artists!

First listen. Not bad, just meh.

Hard for me to get a grip on. Not poppy enough to challenge the Kinks, not punk enough to stand up to the Clash. I like it and I bet it'll grow on me, but for now it's a hmmm.

Pretty good and not boring.

A decent combination of Mod Revival with Power Pop, New Wave and some little touches of punk. It is a fun album, but nothing really stands out to me. The instruments sound great and playful, having their energetic fast moments, nice riffs and some melodic parts, but they also aren't frenetic enough for my taste, nor I find what they play to be super memorable. At least I wasn't bored at any moment and the production is quite tasteful. What I can't really dig is the voice. Don't really like the heavy English accent it does, although it never bothers me to the point were it has my wishing for him to shut up. So in conclusion, I think it is a decent album. It has its charm and energy, but it does not have anything truly special (that's why the review is so short) nor that resonates with me, so I end up not really caring about it.

Absolute classic

The Jam’s All Mod Cons sounds like an amalgamation of Elvis Costello and Men At Work, which is a pretty interesting combination in its own right. The album was enjoyable without overstaying its welcome, although whether The Jam needed to be represented by two albums on this list is a question I’m not really qualified to answer.

The Jam sounds like something I should have heard before. They were around at the same time as Elvis Costello and The Clash and certainly had to be influenced by The Who and The Kinks. I'm really surprised these guys haven't ever crossed my path until now. It's just fine and not a bad listen, but it just doesn't knock you off your feet.

Fav song: Down In The Tube Station At Midnight

3,1 Highlights: English Rose, It's Too Bad

Sounds like the police

I'm giving this album a 3, for a simple reason. I enjoyed it quite a bit while I listened to it, but I sadly couldn't really remember any of the songs the morning after listening through the whole thing.

This album is really nice, and, I would love to say something else, but it truly has some parts that are not that well done. It is a really enjoyable record, this for sure. I love how there are hints of different styles all around the record, combining different sounds sometimes in really good musical decisions. So, I have to say, there are many parts that are great. And some of the guitar work is delicious. That being said, the vocals are not this album's strength. They are fine. There is nothing wrong with them (except at certain points in which they start to feel a bit tedious to listen to), but they are not very remarkable, to say the least. I do not mind much, either. And I can get through all this full record without paying much attention to that detail. But, that added to some weak compositions and some reiterating elements are parts of the record that make it feel not flawless at all. There are many songs that feel like a collage of some indie stuff, something not good, to be honest. And some songs are just nice. Yeah, this album is... nice. Just that. It is pleasant to listen to, not too much heavy, not too much interesting, not too much exciting. It is nice, good, and, sure, you have a nice time listening to it. So, it is what it is.

This was a pretty good album, but I don’t know if there was anything that The Clash already didn’t do. The song It’s Too Bad was kind of a fun song cause it was very beach-Boys-meets-1990s Indie rock considering it was made in 1978. The other song I also enjoyed was English Rose, which was a very chill song. It’s funny that I hadn’t heard of the Jam prior to the 1001 list because they are actually a pretty good band, but I wonder if their sound was too similar to some of the other punk bands who got the notoriety and the media attention.

Random thoughts: * This one felt much like the previous The Jame record on 1001 list. However, this one was less Clash and seemed more Elvis Costello/The Kinks. * The Jam is a good 1001 education. They seem like they could have been bigger in the USA but apparently were huge in the UK. Short time frame of activity. I wonder why The Clash and others broke through but The Jame not so much? * Head bopping pop good ness throughout. I enjoyed the down tempo English Rose quite a bit. This was my favorite track on the initial listen but I could see myself changing favorite tracks if I were to listen to this one again. * Overall, Th Jam is a good addition to 1001 and is worth further listening.

Absolute Banger of an Album, classic British band, Weller, Foxton, Buckler at their very best My favourite Jam album, it’s a beauty.🙌

The Jam are a great singles band but I can't love an album by them. Mod rock doesn't do much for me, Weller and the band are talented and influential but it's underwhelming as a whole.

classic but does a great job

2/10 my second album from these guys and I don't think I'm a fan yet

Entretenido pero no la gran cosa, 2.5

I love Weller. The jam, style council and his solo stuff. This is the last gasp of his first career stage. Taking the more sensitive edge of the who, the kinks story telling and adding a harder punk edge. In the crowd is probably the best song the who never wrote and English rose is a beautiful delicate thing. A craftsman beginning to spread his wings

I’ve never actually played a full Jam album - weird because I’ve always loved the singles. The album is exactly what I hoped and this period remains by far the highlight of Weller’s career.

Not really listened to much of The Jam but this was pretty fun. Probably just a 4 for me.

(Light to decent 7/10) I liked Sound Affects better but this album is some solid 70's new wave. The bass on "Down in the tube" is phenomenal daaayyyumn.

2.7 i liked some of the songs but there was a little too much filler

Surprisingly really good I knew nothing about this album or the Jam and its a solid rock album, I saw somewhere they influenced bands like the clash and I can hear that I'll be listening to this more it's well produced all the band sound tight the song writing is great and it was just a pleasure to listen to

Somewhat innovative and not entirely without depth, but certainly shows its age.

Unremarkable compared to Def Leaopord

It’s fine. Middle of the road 80’s album. 2.5⭐️

More British new wave on this list? Who would've thunk it? It's alright....half of it has promise, other half is boring.

Not terrible but wasn't feeling this at all.

JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM

The Jam sound like they were heavily influenced by Elvis Costello and all the parts of new wave I don’t particularly care for. Or maybe, I just don’t get it. I previously gave the Sound Affects album two stars, but Paul Weller’s other projects (a solo album and The Style Council’s Cafe Bleu) both got three stars. On paper, I would have guessed the opposite, but here we are. Like Sound Affects, this sounds more like their influences to me than something new - notice how many of the reviews of this record talk about The Who, The Clash, The Police, or other influences. Unlike my review of Sound Affects, I have a better understanding of Paul Weller’s perceived importance to British music and why so many of his projects are on this list. I’m still not sure I agree, but I’m glad to have more context now.

Its alright. There's a couple of good songs on here but in general its too poppy and too geared towards hit making

The Jam certainly aren't the first band that I'd give a second album on a list like this, but after listening to both Sound Affects and now All Mod Cons, I will say that I'm not upset that they're on here twice. I enjoyed Sound Affects when I heard it August of last year, but I think I enjoyed All Mod Cons even more! I know, right? I don't know what it is, but this one appeals to me more. I really like how this album sounds. The bass is excellent. Paul Weller's voice is pretty solid on this album. There's some nice variety in the songs, most of which are pretty good. Most of the songs are pretty fast-paced, and they're all good deals of fun. "English Rose" is a bit of a change of pace, and it's a nice one. It's got some good acoustic guitar work. The lyrics are very well put together on this album. The closer, "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight" is probably where it's at its best. Great closer. This album's pretty unique all things considered. It's got a punk spirit, but the mod revival sound allows the album to feel original in comparison to its contemporaries. So, yeah. This album's pretty cool. Good way for me to end my "getting albums with Paul Weller on them" saga. 4/5.

As a fan of the Kinks, I'm sad that I slept on this band. Not only is David Watts rocking, but I really enjoyed the Ray Davies-influenced lyrics, and the music is both beautiful and exciting. You hear a lot of bands influenced by them. They were contemporaneous with the Clash. I heard a lot of similarities. Then on to Green Day and others

¡Muy chido, muy dinámico!

ima neke bas gotivne rifove, svidja mi se i vidim kako su uticali na dosta bendova

Random thoughts as I listen: -Like a punkier Kinks. I've never been able to get into The Jam, but I like this record so far.... -"To Be Someone!" The original...I've heard the live Oasis cover of this song a million times. This is good. - I hate it when bands name songs after random dudes. "Billy Hunt." "David Watts." I'm not sure why it irritates me so much, but it does. - The changes in feel/tempo/dynamic is great. Going from the wiry, energetic punky stuff to some nice, relatively chill acoustic songs works really well here. - I can hear how much influence these dudes had on the punk revival bands of the 90s. "The Place I Love" was very influential on "Basketcase," and "'A' Bomb on Wardour Street" sounds a lot like Rancid to me. Overall I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I might even put this on for a long drive some time. THREE STARS

I listened to this four time and it kept not sticking. I was enjoying it each time but it never cracked in. David Watts is catchy. Wait. That's a cover. Damnit.

I enjoyed this. Sounded like a bunch of Canadian indie rock bands were possibly inspired by this. The bass is the star of the album. In the Crowd is my favorite track. The bass on "Down in he Tube Station at Midnight" A fairly tight album that doesn't over stay it's welcome.

One of the few groups from this period that still sound fresh, great and easily listenable to me. Remarkably, the first time I've listened to this album fully, Setting Sons was more familiar to me. But after two listens today I feel this might be my preference. Nearly a 5.

All mod cons - 4 To be someone (didn't we have a nice time) - 3 Mr. clean - 4 David watts - 3 English rose - 3 In the crowd - 3 Billy hunt - 4 It's too bad - 3 Fly - 4 The place i love - 3 'A' bomb in wardour street - 3 Down in the tube station at midnight - 4

There are some great artists to come out of the UK: Led Zeppelin, the Kinks, Elvis Costello, Ringo Star… the list goes on. But, if this list has taught me anything, it’s that there are far more duds coming by out of that country than the good ones. I’ve found most that made the cut are downright awful. Fortunately, this band is just meh. I didn’t hate it, definitely didn’t love it, just kind of don’t want to listen to it anymore.

Not sure why but I expected this to be a little more funky not so pop punk. It was good though and I am sure tons point to it as influential. Curious if they are in the rrhof? Nope they not. I wonder if too British.

Fun! Best Song: David Watts Rating: 8/10 Stars: 4

This is really pretty weak. I’m sorry. Instantly forgettable. Not painful to listen to, but I think I was forgetting I was listening to it while I was listening to it. Both musically and lyrically trite.

I enjoyed Sound Affects a lot and it has been three years since I listened to that album. So it was time for another album by the Jam. I could not decide after one listen if I prefer this one to Sound Affects. I decided that I like them equally and will punt on providing a definitive answer to this question that I posed. It is allowed. It is interesting to me The Jam's biggest hit (or most recognizable) is not on either of the albums represented in this book. I liked the cover of David Watts but I also feel The Jam have such good songs they don't even need to do a cover song. English Rose is a precursor to some of Paul Weller's solo material and if that is good or bad depends on your opinion of Paul Weller's solo work. My favorite tracks: All Mod Cons To Be Someone (Didn't We Have a Nice Time) English Rose Billy Hunt It's Too Bad Down in the Tube Station at Midnight

Okay album - 50/ 50 whether I will listen again

Not bad music, but I don't care for the singer's voice. Tough to give it anything over 2 stars since I really don't want to hear this guy. 2 it is.

Stand-out tracks: To Be Someone, English Rose, Its' Too Bad, The Place I Love, Down In The Tube Station At Midnight Some of the tracks are a pleasant listen, but it all just sort of blends together by the end.

Highlights: To Be Someone, Mr. Clean, David Watts, In The Crowd, The Place I Love, Down In The Tube Station At Midnight Very emo stuff right here. Didn't expect this to be such an angsty and even punky record. I liked the way they took a dump on urban society. However the quality dipped greatly as the second half started - another song where they infinitely repeat some name, a knockoff 60s invasion song... It's not a bad record, but it does get repetitive and drags on after the initial honeymoon period but then it closes in a good way. However I do believe that it has potential to grow on me over time.

Стилевая база. English Rose самая красивая песня на земле.

Слышал до этого пару их песен, они крутые, альбом тоже классным оказался, надо будет потом побольше их послушать
