I feel like this would have been a formative album for me if I had heard it during my moody high school years. As it stands, it feels a bit one note. It's a good note, but one note nonetheless.
An album full of perfectly adequate songs, but pretty much nothing stands out.
Also monkey movie guy
Relieved it did not have Yoko in it. Parts of the middle are not too bad, but I just did not care for a good deal of it.
I really enjoyed the instrumentation on this album. However, while I think Paul Simon's voice is great, and it's not exactly like I expect a lot of bombast there, it feels like the voice and the instrumentation are disconnected from each other. Still, a decent enough listen.
Highway star is a hell of an opener to this album. I was familiar with the big hits from this one, but even the songs in between were great. Some absolutely amazing solos and drumming to be found here.
Honestly ended up liking this way more than I expected, despite my personal distaste of Moby as a person
This felt like the missing link between Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Odelay to me. Unfortunately, it largely felt like my least favorite parts between these two albums. Not without merit, but not for me.
Some fun instrumentation, but vocally everything just sounds the same to me.
Some catchy stuff on this album. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it considering that the other M.I.A. album I got on here was a 1/5 for me, but this one wasn't too bad.
Completely faded into the background for me. Wholly unremarkable sadly
Liked a lot of what was going on with the guitar, and the title track is pretty good. But nothing else really stood out that much to me
This wasn't the sound I was expecting from Massive Attack, but I really enjoyed it. Felt like a really cool trip back to the 90s
It grabbed me pretty early on, but unfortunately lost me just as quickly
Really enjoyed this. Felt like a good bit of variety between tracks, and really feels a bit ahead of its time
This is now the 4th Bowie album I've been given. I think Bowie himself was a pretty awesome guy, but I just don't get the fuss, musically. That being said, this was my favorite one of his albums that has shown up so far. But it's unfortunately been a pretty low bar.
Haven't listened to this all the way through since around when it first came out. Still ended up finding it whimsical and really enjoyable overall.
Had no idea what to expect with this, but really enjoyed it. Final Days was definitely the highlight for me
Like many others here, I also feel like I didn't give Hole a fair shake. In my case, though, I definitely feel like it was more the fact that I just wasn't into grunge at the time. I still don't think I am, but this was an incredibly strong album.
It was fine. Didn't love the song about pretending to be a 7 year old in Hiroshima, even if I support the sentiment behind it.
There was a part of me thinking that actually listening to a Rod Stewart album would end up changing my opinion of him as a weird sex symbol for middle aged women in the 70s-90s. That part of me was wrong.
Honestly, I was expecting to hate this based off the album art. But it was a dumb fun time. I might normally only give it a 3, but the whiplash of expecting something much worse and being pleasantly surprised is pushing this up to a 4 for me
Really, really strong beginning to the album. The rest is still good, but it doesn't hit as much for me as the first couple of tracks do.
A little weird, a little groovy, but overall a good time.
Totally bland. Utterly unremarkable. I can't even bring myself to give it a 1 because at least 1-star reviews were indicative of strong feelings. My strongest feeling from this is just being perplexed how it made this list to begin with. I could maybe see this as a foundational album if it came out in the very early 90s. But 97? Way too late for this.
I definitely agree with a lot of the criticisms around Coldplay, and I think a lot of the claims about how basic/boring a lot of their music is really gets exemplified on a good portion of the latter half of this album. That being said, the first half of this album is so strong, that I still feel like I can't rate this lower than a 4, even if I'm not particularly a fan of the band overall.
I really enjoyed this overall. I imagine if I had heard it when it came out, it'd probably be a 5-star album for me. But overall, I still think it's worth a 4.
Didn't really care much for the first half of the album, but the second half felt more interesting and grabbed me more. Still, it just didn't quite click with me
If I ignored the vocals on this album, it would be an easy 5 stars. Those vocals though...
I didn't think it was great, but I do think that at 19 tracks that are on average around 2.5 minutes long, there was a surprising amount of variety. And if nothing else, that kept things interesting.
It took me a couple tracks to get into it, but once I did, I really enjoyed it. Pretty solid overall
I feel like if I hadn't gotten Machine Head just a month ago, I'd be inclined to rate this highly. But why does this need to be on the list with Machine Head? Are we gonna start putting deluxe albums separately from the regular edition? Being generous with a 2 star here.
I could definitely hear the foundation for the much better later work that would come out of this. But just taken on its own, I very much, to my own surprise, did not care for this album.
Good dumb fun
God I hated this. Truly awful singing, and I spent every track hoping it was the last one on the album
It's fine. Nothing amazing, but nothing awful either
It's a jack white album. It comes across as just about every other thing I've heard from him. Mildly interesting, but not enough to keep me hooked.
Bob Dylan certainly has a unique voice. And I can't explain why I enjoyed this so much, but he apparently gets a pass that I probably wouldn't give a lot of other singers with more unique voices.
I went into this feeling like I don't fully get the Talking Heads. I still feel like I don't fully get them. That being said, I still really enjoyed this.
Painfully generic. This sounds like the music that would be playing in the background of a comedy set in the 80s that couldn't get the rights to more well known songs, so the filmmakers had to just get someone on the crew to make something that sounded 80s-enough.
I don't care for Bono and especially don't like U2's later stuff. This was solid, but I don't think I can bring myself to give it a higher rating than 3
First half is an easy 5 star. Teen Age Riot is an amazing opener. Second half is a solid 4 stars, but I'm rounding up overall in this case.
First half of the album is solid but kinda samey. Second half gets much weirder and more interesting as a result.
I just straight up don't get Joy Division. It's not bad, and I was hoping that listening to this all the way through would give me some better understanding. But try as I might, I just don't get it.
As someone who generally enjoys folk music, this didn't do it for me. The only thing keeping me rating it lower is that the last two tracks of the album were pretty damn good. So it at least ended on a good note. Otherwise though, it felt bland as hell.
Wasn't a fan of the Rolling Stones coming into this. I'm still not, apparently.
Some interesting stuff on this album. Can't say it was exactly my jam, but it wasn't boring.
I liked this better than the last Neil Young album I got from this list. Unfortunately, the last album was 3 days ago. And I think I need a bit more of a break from Neil Young.
As a super casual fan of bossa nova, this was even better and more interesting than I was expecting. Big fan of this.
This is the third Led Zeppelin album I've gotten, and it's definitely my favorite so far. I can't say I'm suddenly a fan now. But I at least feel like I get it.
I'm not the biggest Elvis fan, but this was enjoyable enough to listen to
Not a huge punk fan in general, so I wasn't expecting much from this, despite the couple of songs I was familiar with already. However, I ended up liking this more than I expected. Fairly interesting sounds and progressions going on here.
Queen is one of those bands that I think is good, but I feel like I don't like them as much as I'm supposed to. So honestly, I wasn't expecting much from this album. But even aside from Bohemian Rhapsody, there was a lot of enjoyable stuff on this album.
Almost tempted to give this 5 stars by virtue of the fact that I had never heard of them and was extremely pleasantly surprised. But as it is, I think this is a solid 4.
Feels simultaneously ahead of its time and dated. But dated in a way that takes me back. A bit bummed out to see the overall negative reaction to this one. It's not absolutely amazing, and there's some stuff in the middle that's a bit too repetitive. But for the most part, it has me fondly thinking about those ads telling me that I wouldn't download a car.
I wasn't expecting to hate this, but I wasn't expecting it to be a 5 star album either. But damn, this was great.
Not at all what I was expecting when I saw it was Miles Davis. Enjoyable, and very dreamlike (particularly the title track). But ultimately, not enough consistency to get me fully engaged.
It was fine. Not egregiously bad or anything, but I did not need to hear this before I died.
This didn't suddenly make me an Elvis Costello fan. But I at least feel like I kinda get him now.
I definitely think a lot of their later albums are better, but this was still incredibly strong and a lot of fun
It was fine. Every song basically sounds the same. But I guess it was a good enough sound.
I'm not a big jazz person, but his was alright. First half felt a bit too chaotic, while the second half wasn't chaotic enough. Wish there could have been a better middle ground
I had heard of Kraftwerk, and a general idea of their genre, but never actually heard any of their songs. This was a very pleasant surprise though. I was pretty wary about the first track being so long, especially after how long that first 5 minutes felt. But the movement throughout the track was great, even if I think it could've been a tad bit shorter. Overall, great album though.
It wasn't aggressively bad, but I just didn't care for it at all.
Probably the most I've disagreed with people's reviews on here. I thought this was interesting, eclectic, and overall great to listen to. I'd only heard one song by them previous to this, but it has me going through their discography now. And hey, if nothing else, at least I'm not making weird blood and soil arguments against this.
As a casual fan of folk music, this absolutely deserves to be on here. That being said, while I was loving this in the beginning, it absolutely went on for a bit longer than I could appreciate. Overall still worth at least a partial listen. Or maybe one broken up over several sessions.
Legendary. Loved it.
Super smooth
