Album Summary
Back in Black is the seventh studio album by Australian rock band AC/DC. It was released on 25 July 1980 by Albert Productions and Atlantic Records. It is the band's first album to feature lead singer Brian Johnson, following the death of previous lead singer Bon Scott. After the commercial breakthrough of their 1979 album Highway to Hell, AC/DC was planning to record a follow-up, but in February 1980, Scott died from alcohol poisoning after a drinking binge. Instead of disbanding, they decided to continue on and recruited Johnson, who was previously vocalist for Geordie. The album was composed by Johnson, Angus and Malcolm Young, and recorded over seven weeks in the Bahamas from April to May 1980 with producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who had worked on their previous album. Following its completion, the group mixed Back in Black at Electric Lady Studios in New York City. The album's all-black cover was designed as a "sign of mourning" for Scott. As their sixth international studio release, Back in Black was an unprecedented success. It has sold an estimated 50 million copies worldwide, and is the second best-selling album in music history. The band supported the album with a yearlong world tour, cementing them among the most popular music acts of the early 1980s. The album also received positive critical reception during its initial release, and it has since been included on numerous lists of "greatest" albums. Since its original release, the album has been reissued and remastered multiple times, most recently for digital distribution. On 9 December 2019, it was certified 25× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Loud, dumb, and fun--this is AC/DC's best album. There are two exceptional tracks and a few pretty good ones. Top tracks: "Hells Bells," "Back in Black," "Shoot to Thrill"
Great album. If you like hard rock, I don't see how you can rate this with less than 4 stars. The opener ("Hells Bells"), including the bells intro, is simply perfect. It is probably my favourite track of the album (also because its position to set the mood for the whole record). Of course, the other three classic songs ("Shoot to Thrill", "Back in Black", and "You Shook Me All Night Long") are also great. Among the "non-classics", I also enjoyed: "Let Me Put My Love Into You" (yes, I know the lyrics are pretty lame), "Shake a Leg" (nice guitar solo), or " Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution". This may not be a 10 out of 10 album...but I think it is good enough to deserve a 5 out of 5. Of all the AC/DC studio albums, this is the one I would recommend to someone who is not familiar with their music (although their live albums are also a great introduction).
Jesus, again? Why? One star, this is beyond tedious, misogynistic and unadventurous. Tom.
Super fun listen, fully of bangers
It's music that makes you wanna punch people in the face, in the best possible way. 5 of the songs I already knew and they are bangers. The new ones (to me) hmm were just like worse versions of the ones I already know. They do just change the words and keep the music the same
It’s practically a 10. I mean, look, the lyric enjoyer in me can’t help but look at “Givin the Dog a Bone” & “Let Me Put My Love Into You” without critiquing the part where the double entendres are so paper-thin that you could poke through them with a bubble. Between that, some repetition, & “Shake a Leg” possibly acting as a better closer (the guitar solo at the end of that track is incredible, how have I never heard it before?), there’s a part of me that’s saying “it can’t really be a 10”, but like… that lyric enjoying & analytical side of me can go fuck himself. Rock and roll ain’t no riddle, man. It’s something you just feel, and it would make absolutely no goddamn sense for me to give this anything but a 10. Brian Johnson was given an impossible task on this album. AC/DC struck gold in finding possibly the only man in the world able to fulfill that task. Bon Scott’s death is the driving pulse behind this album, with tracks born out of loving tribute to the man’s never say die attitude, and that’s the best way to celebrate a fireball like that. The highway to hell that AC/DC were riding has found its destination in anthemic stadium rock, and the direction they take here is one of unstoppable force. It took a bit for me to find the same natural flow state as I did on “Highway to Hell”, but once the bigger hits really kicked in, it just felt like riding a bike. “Back in Black” is one of the greatest songs ever. “You Shook Me All Night Long” probably has AC/DC’s catchiest chorus ever. Everything else surrounding those tracks, including “Hells Bells” & “Shake a Leg”, all maintain a near-perfect flow throughout. Again, the two I mentioned have paper-thin entendres & may as well have just given up on metaphor, but they still have a great instrumental energy. Of course, that’s the point of the album. It’s to feel that energy at an ethereal level, and while it takes time to get there, they definitely fucking get there. Brian Johnson’s screechy, constipated vocals are the perfect fit for a band subtly pushing themselves in a new direction, and he blew me away with some of his longer held notes. There are times where I wish he had a bit more restraint & stayed a bit deeper, but I also can’t imagine these tracks playing out any other way. Instrumentally, it’s… I mean, you just gotta hear it. There’s not a single misplaced note or beat. You can’t do it any better. That’s the story of the album, really. This is just that goddamn good, and while the analytic side of things will question how the masses can eat up 42 minutes of the same damn song at an even thinner level than “Highway to Hell”, those people have clearly never had the life experience of singing the chorus to “You Shook Me All Night Long” at a party at 2 in the morning. It ain’t no riddle, man. It’s AC/DC, and they fucking killed it. It’s a dopamine hit of an album, and it’s just got to be a 10.
Not too bad! I was worried it was going to be more generic metal but this really moves things along quickly and jumps between ideas in a satisfying way. I like the really high register of the vocalist, it gives the music a kind of panicked and frantic nature that's almost a little alarming. It's a nice bit of stimulation that makes the rest of the music come through really strongly. They also seem to really care about melodies staying interesting without getting repetitive. Surprisingly strong showing from a rock album.

Auf der anderen Seite sind Shake a leg oder What do you do for money honey auch keine Kracher.

One of the best rock albums of all time. Immediate 5 stars. This album is one of my favourite albums of all time as well, I have listened to it all the way through so many times. This album genuinely helped me write my dissertation, the high energy amped up songs kept my energy up and my brain working during tedious writing sessions. I just think this is perfect rock, it’s not experimental it’s just pure rock. And I think it’s great. Brian Johnson did an amazing job filling the void that Bon scott left.
The hits are the hits. The rest was meh.
great shit. just fun hard rock from down under (or england, idk).
--Hells Bells...solid hard rocker --Shoot to Thrill...a plus riff --What Do You Do for Money Honey...straightforward but that's why they're here --Givin the Dog a Bone...Angus is the flashy face but this proves Malcom is the heart --Let Me Put My Love into You..."don't you struggle, don't you fight". yeesh, guys --Back in Black...classic riffage --You Shook Me All Night Long...see above --Have a Drink on Me...sounds like everything else --Shake a Leg...I found myself literally, involuntarily, shaking my leg. head banger, too --Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution...there's kind of a Bob Seger thing going on here. it's fine
Love the production of this album. Hard rock, clear vocals, driving energy. Hells Bells Back In Black You Shook Me All Night Long
Why do I exclusively get AC/DC when I’m about to be in the car with friends who don’t want to listen to AC/DC. // But alas!!! We had to wait a day because the night called for absolute silence so we could debrief properly after driving back from You Can See Everything. And. They loved it! Listened on the way to the Cloisters the next morning and it was a thrill.
80s metal/rock. Very standard. Like something you’d listen to in an arcade/dive bar
Ugh I just can’t stand his voice and I really love metal usually
Its so close to 5 starts good album
Boner rock for pre teen boys. Does Angus Young have riffs? 2-3 tops, every song sounds the same. Brian Johnson's voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me. Quite a choice to add Have a Drink on Me after Bon Scott's death. And the innuendo in most of the songs is tiresome. Aside from a few Bon tracks, I never need to hear this band again. Hells Bells is the only thing saving this from a 1
This is not my band anymore but when I was, like, 12 years old this was part of my middle school soundtrack. Funny how that works. Anyway, while I’ve outgrown the “sex, hell, and rock’n’roll” vibe I have to give credit where it’s due musically. The songs are iconic because they lay their hooks into you and don’t let you go. Amazing that this was a “comeback” album of sorts (thus the title). They came back, in black, with a vengeance.
The dumbest “rock and roll” possibly ever recorded. Shit at least the shaggs are trying something
Nice
You cannot deny the importance and milestone that this brought to music. This album was the main switch from the 70s to the 80s. Sonically, so much changed. Overly compressed stadium rock was born with this. You may or may not like it, but you cannot deny it.
It's just Highway to Hell again but with some different words. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing.
My throat hurts just listening to them. Lot of goodies on this album though.
7.5/10
Great albulm
Ну очень жестко. Это прям рок в чистом виде, самое правдивое его проявление. Шикарный качающий саунд, темные и порой злые тексты. Очень в стиле Арии, которая мне тоже безумно нравится
7.5 / 10
10/10 Lo mejorsito de ACDC
Im probably going to be put to death for saying this, but I hate AC/DC’s singer
Ugh, men to vse zveni enako. I can't help it. Plus, ta glas. It's a lot.
Not my cup of tea!
You shook me all night long
my first album at about 10 years old - it’s awesome
Creepcast
Stand outs: *Hells Bells *Shoot to Thrill *What Do You Do For Money Honey *Back In Black* *You Shook Me All Night Long *Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution Very strong album to start with, with the 1001 album list.
Every fucking song sounds the same. Most overrated band ever. Fuck off
I hate this cheesy shit
You could release this entire album as a greatest hits album.
# Album Name: Back in Black # Artist: ACDC # Rating: 5/5 # Comments: Absolute beast. Amazing album. # Top Tunes: All of it # Would I listen to it again? yes
Epic rock but not my cup of tea
Day 69 I want to point out that the day before, I was hoping to get something outside of the UK or US. Furthermore, I explicitly made a point that I had avoided AC/DC so far and was joking to myself that I'd inevitably run into them. Against all odds, it appears I've manifested receiving them today. What is the fucking likelihood because this is both freaky and hilarious. Ah right, the album itself. Whoever came up with the chocolate ice cream analogy is bang on. Fav track: Back in Black. Call me boring, you agree with me on the inside
Wow, this has some of the worst lyrics I've ever heard. A generous 2 stars purely because the riff to Back in Black is fun to play
Towards the very bottom but marginally better than Highway to Hell
One of the worst albums I've had the misfortune of listening thanks to the voice of Brian Johnson. The gulf between the iconic riff of Back in Black and the nails-on-chalkboard vocals that kick in a few seconds later is wide.
The perfect album - theres a reason its the 2nd highest selling album of all time The opening bells to Hells Bells, the opening track the first album released after the death of Bon Scott is perfect Angus & Malcolm at the height of their powers. Phil Rudd on drums, Cliff on bass. Probably the best post Bon line-up ACDC had. Not my favourite ACDC album that title belongs to Powerage but how anyone gives this anything but 5 stars baffles me Rock and Roll aint noise pollution!!
i keep saying british rock is better
Absolute banger, not a single dud.
I cannot stand the vocals. every AC/DC record since the OG singer’s passing are borderline unlistenable to me for that very reason. Yucky. It grates on me so much I literally can’t focus on anything else, but I respect the ubiquity of their music and accessibility for so many people AND their breaking out of AUS which is famously hard to do. But please no more. I hate it.
If you were to ask me to name a "classic rock song", the titular song from this album is surely the one that would come to mind first. And I would not be shocked if much of the human population had the same instinct. Many of the songs blend together, but there's little doubt of the status it has cemented as one of the most recognizable hard rock records of all time. Favorite Song: Back in Black Score: 81/100
Brings back those teen memories!
Listen at full volume. Sexy but NOT romantic.
I remembered this is a vibe play the hell out as a teenager it’s good but it’s not five
Probably overrating this but goddamn did I love it when I was in middle school
Probably the best heavy metal album I've heard. Heard most of the songs on the radio but they flow together as a piece. That said not really my type of music-but very well done.
6.3/10
2.6/5 loud
To some degree it’s a lot of shouting, but at its core this is a good rock n roll record. The rhythms are really good.
Sure, they've only got one song, but it's a really good one. Tighter and more energetic than a lot of the "classic" hard rock records on this list. Even still, ten tracks and 42 minutes is approaching the upper limit of how much AC/DC one can take in a single sitting, kind of like eating a meal that's nothing but chocolate cake.
Rock and Roll isn't noise pollution. Quite the opposite, hearing it made me tear up with happiness.
hell no
Solid Rock Album - 4/5
Solid rock n roll album. Forgot how fun it is!
I find this music very inaccessible. Particularly the vocals.
I mean, it's an all time classic. What can you say? All killer no filler.
It all sounds the same to me.
siento que es música en donde la gente siempre fue un señor.
Undeniable Top 1001 album. Hits, influence, legacy and longevity, all present. Even your grandparents know a few of these songs! This is the first album I bought with my own money as a kid!! Hard to beat the opening track, "Hells Bells" (650M listens) is a tone setter and instantly recognizable. It has power and hooks, a guitar lick everyone knows & powerful vocals. "Back In Black" (2.3B), is the blueprint for a hard rock song. "You Shook Me All Night Long" (1.8B) has to be one of the most popular rock songs that appeals to a wide audience. It's got the hooky chorus and the fun lyrics people love to sing along to. Then you add in tracks like "Shoot To Thrill" (580M), "Rock And Roll Ain't Noise Pollution" (115M), "Have A Drink On Me" (107M) and nearly every other track and you have a bangin' album that rocks from start to finish. This is one of those rare albums that all 10 songs are a collection and should be played in order and in their entirety. The least listened to song on this album has 28M listens. "Back In Black" the song has 2.3B listens!! No denying this album deserves a spot on this playlist even if you're British and prefer wimpy Brit pop (I see you John Martyn fan!). 5 stars for great songs, impact, legacy, hits, a full album of rockers, instant recognition & longevity.
Un classique, une madeleine de Proust Un voyage en Angleterre en 1981 5 étoiles obligatoire
They play always the same song and yet it's always fun as hell
AC/DC are a dumb, and cynical band. Your singer dies, and it's business as usual making another album, with many of the themes linking to said singer's death in a totally non-reflective way. Absolutely mad. AC/DC are an amazing and brutally efficient band. Refusing to bow to trends or to be set back by tragedy, they plough their own singular furrow with relentless doggedness. Absolutely rocking. Not sure they've ever made a 10/10 album, always a tune or 2 that brings it down a notch, but the big hitters on this record are total killers.
Great album

Great Rock N Roll Album the masters of the stop start Rock N Roll The title track and You Shook me great stuff. OK its not Dylan on the lyrics and they have shall we say a signature sound nice riffs screamy vocals heavy drums they do what you want in a rock band with an Angus shaped gimmick too. Big, Bad and Bold ohhh and loud
Aussies rock
In a nutshell: let there be rock. You'd think a band would break up after their best mate and frontman dies. But it was under the insistence of friends and Bon Scott's family that AC/DC should carry on. Brian Johnson is by no means a replacement or a vector of Bon Scott. He brings his own to the band. Scott even mentioned while watching Johnson's old band Geordie in the 70s that he would be a good fit for AC/DC. The lyrics are still juvenile- party hard, drink hard, fuck wild and hard. Yet I noticed the tongue is firmly planted in cheek here compared to Highway To Hell. The riffs stand the test of time. It's embedded in many karaoke bar, strip bar, dive bar and pub front bar playlists in the funny ol' land called Oz. Overall: 5/10
Für Gitarrenliebhaber unverzichtbar ;-) Eines der großen Rock-Alben mit "Back in Black" und "Hells Bells" 5/5
classic tunes. Standout was what do you do for money honey
Just no a fan Top bops: None
No need to worry about some crazy experimental record with AC/DC. This is straight ahead, uncomplicated, innuendo laden rock. No one is, or should be at least, coming to this looking for a profound meditation on the human experience. You want to enjoy 42 minutes of legendary rock with a one fist pumping in the air and the other holding a beer, come right in. 8/10
AC/DC is a band I've managed to mostly avoid until now. It's not terrible - the band is solid. But it's not very interesting. I guess AC/DC isn’t there to be interesting, it’s there to make you headbang and say WOOO FUCK YEAH ROCK N ROLL. High 2 stars; I'll give 'em a 3 for effort
It contains 2 classics: "Back in Black" and "You Shook Me All Night Long". The sounds are alright.
Some great rock. I don't know what else to say. Favorite Track: You Shook Me All Night Long
4/5 easy
The mandatory classic rock radio songs at 6:30AM, along with Black Sabbath. Pairs well with gas station coffee and a 20 minute commute.
day 7 of not rolling Aja by Steely Dan oh hell yeah. this shit rules. i don't have to say anything that hasn't already been said by actual AC/DC fans; i don't even care about them and i love this album
Music for guitar players who only wanna play open chords but still wanna play rock n' roll. Honestly, fuckin rips.
Just a great time all around. Not an album where I’m particularly concerned with, or able to discern, the lyrics. 3.5-4
Anytime I see the phrase or title "back in black" I instinctively start singing "Jack is back" because Nickelodeon ran that stupid promo for Jack Black hosting the Kid's Choice Awards everyday all day for a few months in 2008. My brain does not remember the actual lyrics anymore. I can only tolerate so much of the vocals on any AC/DC song, it just really wears me out. About halfway through the album I almost quit, and then "You Shook Me All Night Long" came on and that song is amazing and it rejuvenated me. It's a fine album.
I don’t know how to explain this but I’m gonna try. Please if anybody understands what I’m describing, let me know because I’ve been working on phrasing this all day. But this whole album sounds like when I go to a concert by a band that I kind of like but in whom I am not super well versed. And the songs in between the songs that I know all sound the same to me and blur together and I have to check setlist.fm but at a certain point I actually lose track of how many songs they’ve played and just give up. I had a good time here, despite that paragraph. “You Shook Me All Night Long” is perhaps the greatest of the Big Dumb Horny Rock Songs, doubly impressive when it’s on the same album as something called “Let Me Put My Love Into You”
Yep, this album still rips. The Young bros guitar parts make me want to learn to play all over again. They're just so crisp, with the perfect amount of bite. This record brings back memories of the title track being both my ringtone and alarm in 7th grade, and *allegedly* playing Hell's Bells at a church function. It's nice to put away the critical lens for some of these albums and just enjoy a fun, innuendo-filled collection of songs to go bowling to.
Classic AC/DC. Brian's first record after Bon Scott's death.
