Album Summary

Crossing the Red Sea with The Adverts is the debut studio album by English punk rock band the Adverts. It was released on 17 February 1978 by record label Bright. Crossing the Red Sea with The Adverts was recorded at Abbey Road Studios. The album title was coined by Jane Suck. In a retrospective review for AllMusic, Dave Thompson called the album "a devastating debut" and "one of the finest albums not only of the punk era but of the 1970s as a whole". Trouser Press said that "in its own way", the album "is the equal of the first Sex Pistols or The Clash; a hasty statement that captures an exciting time". In March 2003, Mojo magazine ranked Crossing the Red Sea No. 17 in its list of the 50 greatest punk albums. The album featured in The Guardian's list "1000 Albums to Hear Before You Die".

Good, all the songs blend together in my opinion, but I do enjoy the song and style they’re going for. Important in understanding the history and impact of Punk

solid 70s punk!

The Great British Mistake, One Chord Wonders, Gary Gilmores Eyes... Hearty dose of mash, but so many bangers.

Loved it

A nice, fun, enjoyable punk album that I definitely won't remember by tomorrow

Not too bad; even if it blends together quite a bit

Pink générique

Du bon punk qui doit avoir laissé sa marque sur le punk rock qui suivit je présume!

Parle-moi de bon punk! j'adore

This is my jam all day. It's got a rough edge, but the music is still accessible with catchy melodies. What a great discovery! One Chord Wonders, Gary Gilmore's Eyes and No Time to Be 21 are the highlights. I almost went with a 4 rating, but this really is an exceptional punk album.

Grungy bassline, angsty lyrics, pure energy - listened to this while working out and had an absolute blast, exactly my kind of punk-music, melodic enough to unforcibly enjoy. Works good as an album, 'No Time to be 21', 'Bored teenagers' and 'Gary Gilmore's Eyes' individually stood out to me, but ome song blends more or less in the other. Shame the Adverts seem to be quite forgotten, really enjoyed.

eh, kinda annoying

A Ramones Rock and Roll High School soundalike for most every track. Lots of frenetic electric guitar

Finally, good punk.

Cool punk/alt album

Early punk...not up my street.

Never heard of this band before and I like a bit of punk. Some pretty decent songs that I will listen to again - One Chord Wonders, New Church, Great British Mistake.

High energy, fun album standout songs: One Chord Wonders New Church Great British Mistake

Listened before? No Familiar with the artist? No Thoughts: - This was fine, but I don't feel like I've missed out by not hearing it before. - I want to like punk more than I actually do... I tend to like the lyrics when I can make them out, but I wish the production was better.

This one seems to fall awkwardly as a punk album. The playing is a bit more inventive, the vocals are clearer and more sung than snarled like some of their peers, and the production is often better. All of which should suggest a better album overall, and yet it’s almost rubbed off some of the infuriating rough edges of its punk era. I will give it the benefit of the doubt and round up the 3.5 / 5.

There’s a certain theatricality to British punk that makes it hit different. This was a fun reminder of how much I enjoy a simple loud punk album. That said, I spent a lot of the album thinking about spiritually similar albums that I should put back in rotation. Maybe more of a 4.5 for me?

fun, loud, messy and new to me

Really liked this; English punk hits different. Something about that little island really drives the angst meter up

No one listens to this

Pretty good for its genre. Probably would have got a three from me except the last few weeks’ offerings have been so slim I’m rounding up out of relief that I didn’t hate it

A punk album with even an ounce of variation within songs?? Gasp!

It is neat to listen to how much of the early classic punk was just an edgier and sped up version of 1950s and 60s rock and roll prior to developing an unfortunate emo habit. 3.5 for now.

The hipster punk pick, this holds pretty well, or at least as well as the Sex Pistols debut. Fun punk (3.5)

I am not Moses

the sex pistols if they were good

heaps of fun. the platonic ideal of a 3.5 (but, alas, you gotta round down)

This was kinda fun and a lot of energy, I'd never heard of them before. Not quite a 4 here but a solid 3.

Not the worst of the punk albums I’ve listened to, but generally an unpleasant experience. 2 stars.

One chord wonders. An exceptional template for the genre.

robert dimrey i wonder sometimes how you can enjoy some of these boring 70's and 80's punk albums that have literally 0 cultural relevance in 2026

I thought it was a bit fun, got that real British punk feel with that raw sound. Feels a lot like the industry at the time but it doesn't really push the needle so I won't necessarily remember this.

Świetne, to tyle, dziękuję.

Who do these punks think they are?!

this was fun and stupid just like me

One for punk lovers

It's not too bad for punk. I've certainly heard worse on this list.

Meh, nothing to write home about but not terrible either.

Did the album have to be so long?? There were good moments but none long enough to make me want to listen again. Hard to finish.

This was fine. Felt like generic punk to me. Nothing really stood out, other than the first song name "One Chord Wonders" which made me laugh.

Meh! I'm so done with Punk even though a couple of songs were interesting.

1978 punk rock album. 25 songs in 1 hr 9 mins. Shortest if 1:44, longest is 4:09. Track 2 is called "Bored Teenagers". We're at the point now where you know exactly what this album is.

It's fine.

This is quite good, well-produced, unambitious early punk. Better than most of that time, but new to me.

Fine. One note even for punk music.

I don't think I recognize this artist or any of the tracks by title. So I'm going into this blind. I'm kind of enjoying this, and I'm not sure how to rate it though. On the one hand, it's a lot like other British Punk of this era, but on the other hand, I wasn't aware of this group at all, so there's at least some newness to it. It's like they're an answer to the question: "What if the Sex Pistols were just better?" I think I'll add it to my list of albums to listen to again, though.

Nothing about this really grabbed me but there's nothing wrong with it either idk

A good listen this one, quite enjoyed it.

Another gem unearthed from this project. Nothing fancy, nothing edgy, just perfect punk music.

It’s just a solid punk album, with I suppose it’s selling point being vocals on the poppier side of things. Got better as the album went on, but its scoring ceiling is limited for me.

Veisla fyrir okkur sem elskum pönkið. Þetta er vel polished miðað við enskt pönk, þ.e.a.s. söngurinn er actually góður, hljóðblöndun í miklum gæðum og allir meðlimir hljómsveitarinnar virðast kunna á hljóðfærið sitt, sem er alls ekki gefið þegar pönk á í hlut. Solid, en nær ekki hærri hæðum en fjarka fyrir mig. Vantar eitthvað stjörnuquality, hittara eða eitthvað sem sker sig meira úr. Þetta er ekki run of the mill en heldur ekki london calling.

Aldrei heyrt um þessa. Orða það best sjálfir. Will we feel a little bit obscure,, they'll like us next year. Ótrúleg gerjun og mikið sem var í gangi 76 - 80. Grunnurinn að öllu því sem á eftir kom. Mjög hressandi og gott pönk. Vel spilandi þó þeir reyni að telja okkur trú um annað.

Not bad and never heard of them before, though doubt I’ll dial anything else by them up.

adelantado a su epoca pero aburridisimo af 5/10

Punk by numbers. Melodic "punk" a la the Clash for people who like leather jacket aesthetics but don't want to commit to being too angry as it fucks up their chances to "score chicks." Sing about teenage melancholia, and try not to throw off the vibe by saying anything of substance. Keep it reeeeeal metaphorical so as not to drive away the hunnies. Work sucks, AI continues to destroy the world, and now I'm listening to fashion punk. I shouldn't look to this list as a pick me up, but I was hopeful for whatever reason. Of course, on my drone-supporting child killing music service of choice, they added a bunch of random fucking songs to the middle of this, so I was further subjected to sing-along poser music. Some riffs were alright, but they came on songs that aren't officially on this record. Frig off, bud. 2 HIGHLIGHTS: Li(e)fe? *Gaze off camera*

Fine, not particularly memorable

i am unable to be impartial towards brit punk at this point because we've been subjected to too much of it

Never have I seen an album start with such a clear thesis as “One Chord Wonder”. They did some fun things with that one chord, but at the end of the day there’s only so much you can do with it.

Gary Gilmore's Eyes.

Falls into that very large category of "why is this here"?

Classic English punk rock. The Adverts were one of the first bands to play The Roxy, which was the first punk rock club in London where many fantastic artists got their start. This is classic album from the golden age of punk and a hell of a lot of fun! An important album from a highly influential genre absolutely belongs on this list. You might not like it, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t belong on this project.

eh i didnt mind it but i wouldnt choose to listen to it

Typical Dimery forgettable punk.

I love some good 70s punk. This is a good album, not a great one. It is a little more varied maybe than some of the other records at the time. For not exactly being well versed in all the chords needed to make an album, they did a great job putting this together. One Chord Wonders is a hilarious play. This record isn't as angry or angsty as a lot of the other punk from this time and I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing. But the songs are actually built really well and played well. And kudos to Gaye Advert for being (one of?) the first female punk star. I would imagine she's the reason this album is on the list so thanks again to her for that. Overall a good album I would totally buy at the record shop, not the best punk record out there but it'll do. 4/5

I like, very good punk. Short blasts of noise!

Never listened. Expectations: None - Verdict: Good - One Chord Wonders is a cool opener and Bored Teenagers is a very typical but good classic punk track. New Church is also pretty good. The next few tracks passed me by a little. I don't think this has quite the bite of some of its contemporaries. Bombsite Boy is easily the most interesting thing so far. The ominous bass intro and dark, twisted noises and vocals create a real sense of foreboding. No Time To Be 21 is a good track as well and I like New Day Dawns and Drowning Men. On Wheels starts with a great riff and is one of the better songs.

Seems like pretty standard punk of the era. Enjoyed it, but no strong feelings either way, just a good punk album.

Sometimes it's kind of hard to get behind a lot of these old UK punk bands, because all of them basically just have the exact same attitude and aesthetic in their music and their shows. A genre of rebellion is basically about copying the same f-you attitudes of their predecessors. It's like when stussy gets popular again because it's anti-establishment and stuff and than everyone wears it so it kind of becomes the establish. Anyway this was actually just alright UK punk I'm kind of dragging on this review nothing else to say.

Good ol primal punk rock with a few standouts. Not much variation in delivery but whatever.

First punk album in a long time that I didnt hate.

Hell yeah. My only issue was the length of the album, classic punk stylings should be kept under 40 minutes unless you have some real variety in there.

I love punk!!! Always better in a British accent, too. Don’t ask why but I really loved Gary Gilmore’s Eyes and my god you gotta go read the Wikipedia page about him.

If you'd told me this was a Sex Pistols album, I would have believed it. It was a lot of fun! big fan

Ei tämäkään kovin erikoista ollut. ⭐️⭐️

-"Ooo all the songs are explicit this is gonna be fun" 🤠 -"Oh it's British" 😒

Solid punk album. I like it, but it's not revolutionary.

🤷🏼‍♂️

It's British punk. It isn't awful and the band has some skill, but there is nothing to distinguish them from nearly every other 70's punk band I've ever heard.

Pleasant listen, competent punk, more tame than I'd expected

Landfill punk but I enjoyed it

Did not finish

debut album by english punk group the adverts, recorded at abbey road studios. probably as punk as you could get, just a bunch of cool nonconformist teenagers banding together and writing punk anthems about anything and everything on their mind. it won't be the first punk album i've heard that's only bout half an hour. after some less remarkable past punk albums, this one actually made my jaw drop. it's less distorted, but very melodic and well-produced punk, reaching post-punk and indie pop sounds when it wants to. in a sea of punk, especially punk from this time period, all the other dudes are looming in a cave and throwing their instruments around; these guys are just singing and playing in perfect unison, shattering windows and waking up neighbors the entire time. and just when you think they're getting all soft, they go RIGHT back to belting and shaking the room.

Good album. Another type of punk music that I enjoy that is more rock instead of the fast paced punk.

Entertaining, but after 2 songs it's all very one note until the end.

If it wasn’t the Adverts it’d be someone else I suppose.

Standard issue UK rock

Track By Track One Chord Wonders - feedbackey atmosphere. Pacey opening. Good drumming and definitely a punky teen vibe. Actually makes me think a little of Ezra Furman’s more energetic numbers. Pretty standard punk tune but not bad. Bored Teenagers - Speaking of a teen vibe! Quite decent, rousing lyrics. Very to-the-point. Which is think punk’s thing right? Short & Sharp one. Alright chorus too. Good drum & bass break near the end. New Church - Straight in! Can sort of hear Bowie’s influence here a little actually. It’s like thrashing the system and carving out a new path I think? Kind of empowering as a concept. On The Roof - Bit of a change of pace. Sounds a bit like Rush or even Zeppelin at the start. Then goes real punk. Quite decent energy on this one. Kind of cool how it switches between the two paces. Good slowed outro. Always like that. Newboys - Noisy. A bit garagey, which I suppose adds to the raw, punk element. The lead guitar is shredding very well in this. Gary Gilmore’s Eyes - Kind of spooky this one. More of a story, like a scary teen novel. It’s a bit like if the ‘Goosebumps’ books were a song. Not that I’ve ever read them! Bombsite Boy - Again, that Rush-like prog-rock feeling. Evokes a mood for sure. Did not enjoy. No Time To Be 21 - This is where the sameness is starting to get grating & boring. Didn’t love this either. Quite decent bass solo and guitar solo later in the track. Safety in Numbers - It’s sounding a little apocalyptic actually by this point, quite deep in the album. Serious. Sort of catchy I guess but drudgy and the emotion just gets drowned a little in noise. New Day Dawns - 10 tracks in and i can safely say the novelty of this genre has definitely worn off. I could do with some bloody variety! The guitar is quite impressive though, I’ll give it that. Drowning Men - Same key! I think. Dramatic lyrics to this one. It’s almost comical actually. Almost theatrical. Perhaps that’s because it’s of the time. On Wheels - Kind of a sad lament on drugs I think? Great British Mistake - It’s speaking about politics, youth, rebellion? I’m not too sure. Didn’t like the song very much. One Chord Wonders (Radio Edit) - it’s like they’re speaking from a speakerphone. Quite good energy here. Quickstep - Good rhythm in the opening. Same singing style though. Quite good chords. Gary Gilmore’s Eyes (Radio Edit) - The vocal does feel a bit clearer on this version. This is such a bizarre song! Like a novelty. Also makes me think of Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace. Just weird stuff. Bored Teenagers (Radio Edit) - Appreicate the guitar parts on this one, hearing it again. Also the rhythm, quite fun. Safety in Numbers (Radio Edit) - It’s like it’s speaking about the cutting edge of culture, quite cool I spose (‘New Wave’). I’m just filling space at this point. This version is too long! Unfortunately the guitar is so samey and grating. We Who Wait - Very driving energy. Punk lines, short and yelling. Like a pastiche of a punk song kind of. Live Versions - Reviewing these as extras, as they’re on the deluxe version and not part of the original album: On Wheels - Like the slower start and build up for this. Moody and punk-epic sounding. Good solo. Newboys - They play this well live but I just don’t enjoy this song at all! New Church - Some of the chord progression I was on board with, but not so much the rest! Thrashy live energy as well, which I guess is pretty punk. Gary Gilmore’s Eyes - Sounds like a slower start live but that might just be me. Vocals mostly drowned out by the band, apart from the terrible albeit kind of memorable chorus! Drowning Men - Seems like it’s a punk thing perhaps to announce the name of the song in punkspeak before you play it. No Time To Be 21 - It’s as good a closer as any for this style and type of album. Solid energy. Overall Review: The positives: There’s a kind of cool swagger to them. They’re also very tight as a band which I respect. But again, too samey and really not my thing. And I’ve said it before but much of it felt like I was enduring it rather than enjoying it. This album was also too long. Like 6 or 7 songs too long. I know on this version there were the live tracks which are extra but still. 1.5/5 Favourite Songs: Elements of some (Bored Teenagers, On The Roof, New Church) but none that stand out.

4/10 fun

One chord wonders - 3 Bored teenagers - 3 New church - 4 On the roof - 3 Newboys - 4 Bombsite boy - 3 No time to be 21 - 3 Safety in numbers - 4 Drowning men - 3 On wheels - 3 Great british mistake - 3

All songs sound the same Which isn't always an issue, but in this case it's a song I'm not particularly interested in

Except for the vague punk sounds, it's a pretty decent album.

Ehh not very interesting to me sadly... too much of the same sound..
