4/5
i saw a comment on this being like "The NYC vibe album", and I GOTTA agree, there's a beautiful mixture of the different elements of the new york scene in the 90's. one song reminded me so much of the main theme of the incredibles haha.
plus afterwards it autoplayed a song off of oceans eleven which he composed which was pretty nice as well :p

A funk world album is such an awesome combo and I really hope there’s more of it on the list later on mmmmmmm

Paul Simon
3/5
A pretty good singer songwriter album (from what I would believe it is).
Everything just sits nicely and the vocals are pretty cool

The Black Crowes
2/5
It's an american blues rock album. It's alright, nothing too special and i liked the songs with piano which gave it a lil ragtimey feel but it just ain't my cuppa. would be fun in an american pub played live tho
fav song: seeing things

Decent rock album with I believe an almost female cast which is sickkkkk. Gives me “If Olivia Rodrigo” made music in the 90’s haha

Beatles
3/5
They really abbeyed that road huh. Come Together is like the most overrated Beatles song I swear to god we did a 60’s music assignment and every group but mine played that stupid song holy crap. Tho back to the album, it’s a Beatles album so what more can you say, it’s an album which you can smile to but I’m def listening to it 55 years too late haha
Fav song: here comes the Sun
The Cure
3/5
i've given a listen the cure a few times over the course of the last few months, and this album is their weakest... not to say it's bad, just alot of the similar sound, and when it's the sort of the like rock-ambience sort of music this album has, it gets a bit too much into the background. However, the songs on individual listen ARE BEAUTIFUL it's so immersive in little pockets and would be a cool vinyl to own as something for a backing vibe. this music wouldn't be in anything pornographic tho...
fav song : The Figurehead
R.E.M.
2/5
This album is… interesting. I am sure that this album could have gone without being on the “1001 albums to listen to before you die”, as it’s not anything special from what I’ve heard from R.E.M. I had to give this album multiple repeeps to actually get a favourite because I like… forgot it. All I can remember from the album is the part where he says “monkey monkey monkey” LMAOOO. I really hope their other albums are better, esp with the 18 million monthly.
Fav song: fireplace
Nina Simone
4/5
When I heard the 12 bar blues in "I love your loving ways", I knew I was in for a TREAT. Which might be a good time to say that 12 bar blues are more of the time boring (expect when jazzheads do em <3), but when they be an album opener OOOOOOOOOOOO goodness how much do they cook. so yeah, what more can I say?
beautiful brass lines on the songs which have em, the piano is just drop dead GORGEOUS OMMGGGGGGG she is such a talented pianist as well, esp climaxing on If I Should Lose You. Either Way I Lose is such a clever idea of having bass vocals doing... bass hahah. what a wonderful way of ending the album
little issues having her vocals sometimes not really hitting it tonely but that's prob due to experience compared to her 70's stuff.
def deserves to be on not only a top 1001 but a top 201 albums :D
fav song: That's All I Ask
Nirvana
3/5
I can't understate how the post 2000's Shin Megami Tensei soundtracks / shoegaze has made me be able to appreciate this sorta music. When guitar go fuzzzz me be buzz. With that being said, that prob moved the album from like a 4/10 to a 6/10, because this sorta music ain't my style. The hits / the first half of this album are pretty decent tracks, but because of how popular this style of music has become, i've become very mellow to it, if they have more of an ambient-experimental album i would probably enjoy it more hmmm. Oh and something in the way was pretty cool as well. I can really see it's mass appeal for sure, it screams "teenage rebellion" or whatever Ben says it means haha.
(also i was watching anime when listening to this (shoutout to RE:zero) and the episodes were pretty peak and it helped with the vibe so that might of helped)
Fav: Come as You Are
Slipknot
2/5
This is a 2/5 because of "i'm not a fan of metal" rather then a "this is a below average album". For all merits, this is a FANTASTIC METAL album, everything from the dual metal vocals (which is just a staple in current metalcore sorta stuff), to that mmmmm bass and the drums are just all well done. It's just something I can't mesh with well, esp since playing metal over 30% volume gives me headaches. I do prefer their more melodic stuff over their intensity... so yeah, good job Slipknot.
Fav song: Child of Burning Time
Brian Eno
3/5
This album goes from good to shit to A DROP DEAD BEAUTY. The start of this album has a lot of cool instrumentation decisions in a unique way (prob cause it's mostly MIDI stuff), and I was excited for an album with that direction. No One Receiving whilst having weird but pretty cool intentional vocal choices made me ponder if this was just gonna be another one of those "albums" that seems to litter this 1001 albums (the rock albums with a lil quirky change in them), or something unique and not expected. Sadly over the first 7 songs, the album just drops down in quality, ending up me letting it be background noise, with Julie With being... not a good song at all.
I was so tuned out. I had 4 songs to go. I didn't want to continue.
I hear the start of By This River. I froze. The gentle piano melody grabs all my attention. The backing chimes help add so much ambience. His vocals come in. They work so well. The midi strings come in. It gives the piece such a melancholic feeling to it. I hate making this comparison, but it honestly reminds me of "Waterfall" and "Quiet Water" from the UNDERTALE ost. But I think this does the vibe SO SO SO much better. The rest of the album complimented By The River so well... it saved the album. I assume this was the part after Science, because did the album just resonate with me once finishing.
This album reminds me of the Grand Canyon :)
Fav song: By This River (did i even need to say)
The Black Crowes
2/5
It's an american blues rock album. It's alright, nothing too special and i liked the songs with piano which gave it a lil ragtimey feel but it just ain't my cuppa. would be fun in an american pub played live tho
fav song: seeing things
Peter Tosh
3/5
I think this album best matches the vibes of the cover / name of it, it's just so smoooooth, Reggae has that just feeeels that come from the kinda swinging drums and beautiful vocals. I had to rate this album up a point on relisten because man is it just so well made. There's not a bad song on this whole album, just vibes, I think Maxi Priest is the reason why I'm a fan of this sorta style of stuff.
Fav Song: No Sympathy
Deep Purple
3/5
This is the most like... medieval a rock album can sound? It def gives the vibe of being from the early 1970's, as the effect pedals and the synth are super limited for the time, but they did do well for what they had on hands. Probably the most "above-average" album i've ever heard lmaooooo
Fav Song: Child in Time
Tricky
4/5
breakbeats are so delicious. i can't understand how goood this album is, even if it's sounds like sex music. i should probably check out more trip-hop if this is what it sounds like. tbf the album starts a lil weak but it gets SO GOOD BY THE END.
fav song: aftermath (beep)
Adele
2/5
I feel like this album is very... corporation pop. It's super safe music, there a few songs on this album which given to someone for not the ideas of it being safe pop music, would the songs be like pretty fun. Would give Adele the chance for her to be able to showcase her works. This album would also be best heard live, it NEEDS those big speakers and width needed for it to shine.
Fav Song: Send My Love
The La's
3/5
I actually listened to this album twice within the 24 hours, one in the afternoon on the train and one during midnight cruising home. It fits both vibes very well... it's a very fun album, an album to bop your head to! It's just a solid album through and through, however I'm not sure if I would listen to any of the songs in isolation.
Fav song: Feelin'
Neil Young
2/5
Honestly this album is so…. Bland? Nor much to talk about it is good background music lmao
Fav: Revolution Blues
Elvis Presley
3/5
Elvis Presley is a interesting artist, such a talented singer for the time and did bring the music industry lil more booming. however in personal taste, i'd rather listen to the original versions of the songs hmmmm. a true 5/10
fav song: money honey
Paul Simon
3/5
It's good cruising music, the album has some very nice instrumentation in it, and has a nice vibe :D . I think the first half of the album is kinda boring but the 2nd half has alot more sauce. the slap bass do be slapppppinnggg yummmm.
fav song: Train in the Distance
Cowboy Junkies
3/5
This album fits the name of the band SO WELL!!!!!! They ARE cowboy junkies. I just feel like I’m a saloon worker making food behind the counter and in the corner of my ears I just hear. This. Something I might put on if I’m ever out in the outback haha. The vocalists voice is just so soothing omg.
Fav song: working on a building
Calexico
3/5
When I opened this album up straight after reviewing the last album, gotta be honest. was a little disappointed. The first track SUCKS. however as the album goes on... it does get better. I do love the completely different styles, showcased in songs like "Close Behind", which gives like Video Game music vibes, like something out of Xenoblade, which gave me a little shock. Oh and when "The Book and the Canal" came on, WOOOOOOOAHHHHHH did it give me chills, such a beautiful piano and string section melody, would fit right into WALL-E. Could they PLEASE change the album cover please, that sucks so much. Trumpets are very sick tho.
The Who
3/5
This album is so long. I kinda get it, like, it’s an album from 1969 so why not do anything else haha, but this album just DRAAGGGSSSS ONNNNN. It feels like an elongated jam session, though honestly I prefer listening to alor of these tracks over like the Beatles LMAOOO.
Fav song: Underture (even if some of the notes are so jwysuwokwhsua off key)
Mercury Rev
3/5
Overall, this is good album. I preferred the songs without the rock influence but it's just... so beautiful. Hope we get more albums like this :)
Fav song: Endlessly
George Harrison
2/5
it's such a long album, especially for someone not into the beatles. i get why it's in here hahahaha, but man does this album drag so much in the 2nd half, by the end it just feels like a jam session lmao. it has some good tracks tho.
fav song: my sweet lord
Jeff Buckley
5/5
This is like my 5th time listening to this album in full... and I swear with every listen this album gets better. Just his voice alone is just powerful enough to give it a perfect rating, and to think it's just... this... from him. man. the world didn't deserve jeff buckley.
fav song: grace
Buena Vista Social Club
4/5
This albbbbuuummmmm is so grooooovvyyyyy woah. I love all the singing melodies, the FANTASTIC trumpets and those smooth as hell drums. Solid 8/10
Björk
5/5
YUMMMMMMMMMM. this is SUCH a great album. I listened to it the first time a month ago and fell in love with Come To Me and Venus is a Boy. It's just beautiful. Her singing with the breakbeats stuff and just fusd0fiojsfsifoi it's amazing.
fav song: Venus is a Boy
Sisters Of Mercy
3/5
This album was alright. The tracks are a lil long and get a bit repeat however the instrumentation was pretty cool.
fav song: Lucretia My Reflection
OutKast
4/5
Oh this is heat. Even if you gave this to me a year ago I would have rated it MUCH lower. It’s got amazing grooves and the flow is just incredible. Sounds even better when you peep on public transportation
Fav song: Spaghetti Junction
ZZ Top
2/5
Yeah it was alright, I liked the songs with the very punchy basslines but it’s nothing too special.
Fav song: Thug
Rufus Wainwright
3/5
it's a good album, i've actually studied this album in a lecture before haha. not too outstanding in anyway thoooo
fav song: i don't know what it is
Beck
2/5
It's just alright. I don't know, the vocals are just lameish and i've heard a bunch of this sorta music so much other places. the production and vibes are nice tho
fav: the golden age
Mekons
1/5
Most "This doesn't deserve to be in the top 1000" album i've listened to thus far. feels like one of those bands that the people writing it were like "oh yeah i really like this personally so i'm just gonna add it" sorta vibe. Genuinely fell asleep to it.
Nine Inch Nails
2/5
cool instrumentation and some amazing ideas they present across the album. sadly not really for me :((
Bob Dylan
3/5
this is a bob dylan album 👍
keep up the good work bob dylan
fav: subterrain homesick blues
Nas
4/5
OOOOH THIS RAP IS SO NICEEE, 90’s rap built diff with those breakbeats
Fav song : miss honey - jingoro
Randy Newman
2/5
omg the toy story guy made albums???? that's so cool, and the style has remained constant for like a few years waow.
fav: back on my feet again
Jefferson Airplane
2/5
This was alright… this just sounds like music… this might of been psych rock in the 60’s but I def prefer newer psych rock
Rage Against The Machine
3/5
such a solid album... the bass goes insane and the hits are pretty mmmmmm amazing.
fav: killing in the name of
Sly & The Family Stone
3/5
Very cruisey album with amazing instrumentation and amazing sound from the 70’s. Perfect music to drive to
Tom Waits
3/5
Theres def some nice ideas throughout the album, a lot of nice tracks with a whoolllleee range of instruments so that’s nice. Trumpets!
The Cramps
2/5
Was playing red dead redemption whilst listening to this and it fit that vibe very well, but outside of that it’s just rock which I’m not too much of a fan of
Nick Drake
4/5
like an actual amazing album, the instrumentation is just such a me thing to listen from the brass to the piano to well, everything
would like an instrumental version of dis better tho
Buck Owens
2/5
atypical 90's country, was pretty nice to listen on a drive home but doesn't suit to listen outside of that
Paul Simon
3/5
A pretty good singer songwriter album (from what I would believe it is).
Everything just sits nicely and the vocals are pretty cool
Aretha Franklin
4/5
Beautiful vocals , beautiful instrumentation, Aretha is such a gem to the jazz scene
Ravi Shankar
3/5
the sitar is a beautiful instrument, and this is just a lovely experience exploring the experimentation using this instrument.
Throbbing Gristle
3/5
such much ambience, nice stuff even if it's just 20000 different bits of noise hahaha
The Crusaders
4/5
this is what every single album here needs to be... hella funky and just SUCH A VIBE. i even knew one of the songs cause it's a sample bwahah
Bob Marley & The Wailers
3/5
sweet grooves and just a viiiibbbbeeeeeeeee, bob marley is cooooookkkiingggggggg
Sheryl Crow
3/5
Ooooooh from only knowing her from her involvement in the cars soundtrack, this is fantastic. It’s just a nice take on grassroots rock with just some hella interesting music. I did find out that I knew All I wanna do which was a surprise so I guess I don’t just know her from cars
Hole
3/5
Decent rock album with I believe an almost female cast which is sickkkkk. Gives me “If Olivia Rodrigo” made music in the 90’s haha
MGMT
3/5
Poppy electronic goodness, very synth very cool, and a whole bunch of guys on it, well done haha
Scott Walker
2/5
Most eh album I’ve ever heard before haha. Nice strings and backing instruments but his vocals are hella annoying
The Divine Comedy
2/5
was alright, it's so so so so so british i've never heard anything more british in my life lmaooo
The Specials
3/5
I wouldn’t think they classify to be “special”, it’s not bad but it’s their band name is a lie. The bass is hella nice thooo and has good vibes
Jimi Hendrix
3/5
Yeah this is a very influential album for sure, it’s sound is nothing like it for the 60’s, however due to its age I don’t think it’s too enjoyable of a listen, esp the 14min song. Solod
KISS
3/5
No clue why I expected heavy metal, because this was… better than that. Good quality rock and I liked the stuff when they didn’t do rock better.
Supergrass
2/5
My mum said it the best “90’s Grunge mixed with supertramp”. Some nice songs but overall an interesting blend and def not the vibe from the cover
Led Zeppelin
3/5
Very cool standard rock album for sure !! Def can hear it’s a lot of bands influence. Some good songs but a lot are a bit dated sadly
Rush
3/5
They def weren’t rushing… very on the best rock music. Pretty cool and def better then the average rock album
Foo Fighters
3/5
Dave fought the foos!! This is so cool !! Very awesome to hear that this is a solo album, super duper cool omg. Raw tracks with some that sound a little shoegazey
Jean-Michel Jarre
3/5
So experimental for the time, kinda giving video game but much cleaner for the time haha. Got sick of it in the auto play queue afterwards but it was the perfect length !
Cyndi Lauper
4/5
girls just wanna have fun!! what a fun album with mostly straight bangers from the top to the bottom, with beautiful synths and vocals all the way through!
The Pharcyde
4/5
OMG this hip hop album is just so juicy, love the rapping, love the breakbeats and the vibes are immaculate. They know how to cook. Tho not my fav hip hop album of this, nas better
Coldplay
4/5
Beautiful album. If only album could be this consistently good! Coldplay is such a classic to me and my childhood. I don’t think there’s a bad track on this album :p
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
Bruce Springsteen is such a classic artist, though not as good as born to run. Solid but not the bessttt of his
The Waterboys
2/5
thank goodness i read the reviews and it saying i only needed to listen to the first 13 songs. it drags... great ideas and playing a game like Red Dead would make it much better, or at like a campfire setting, however a natural car listen home... not sure about that one. good stuff tho
Bob Marley & The Wailers
3/5
Thay do be the bob Marley and that do be the wailers wow very standard album from them wow
Richard Thompson
3/5
It’s average. Theres nothing special about it, though there’s nothing bad about it. Love the fact that it goes from male vocals to female vocals every other track.
Nirvana
3/5
This is such an interesting concept to do a live album on the 1001... i def think it's a good idea for it. kinda iconic for them not to do their hits, though as someone who's not too into nirvana, i wish there kinda were. nevertheless, nice work !!
Genesis
3/5
such a novel concept of being a double album, though as someone who thinks genesis is alright... its good for the first like 50mins. some good track afterwards, but still a wonderful album haha. good driving music to and from a gig.
Blur
3/5
this album is kinda a blur. it's got so many ideas throughout each track, however, it's so BRITISH. laughing with my track at most songs at the different directions it was going through, has psych stuff to crooner stuff to just standard rock, to like the most british stuff ever. very fun album.
Kendrick Lamar
5/5
SAMIDOT may be the best kendrick lamar song.
The Beach Boys
3/5
Beach boys are such a classic band, pretty groovy for ‘71, and the vocals have really beautiful sounds effects on it
Love
2/5
interesting that the album had a mono and stereo version within the same album, found that fascinating. I always find 60's psychedelic rock a bit boring, i love the genre 20 years later when it's more effect heavy but it just sounds like rock. nice drumming tho.
Sepultura
2/5
Very important to have something A. Brazilian B. Heavy Metal in this list.
sadly, not my stuff. Cool aspects but heavy metal gives me headaches
Jimi Hendrix
2/5
Found it more interesting but less enjoyable than his Electric Ladyland album. Kinda didn’t want him 2 weeks after the last one but that’s what happens haha
The Chemical Brothers
4/5
So groovy and good, I’ll probably make the style of music if I was in the 90’s.
Animal Collective
3/5
Such a 2010’s album even tho it’s from 2009 lmao. Interesting electronic elements even tho the vocals are a bit wacky at times
David Bowie
3/5
it's almost emotional to learn that this is bowie's death album... though saying that it's very hit or miss, the hits SLAP but it's a rough start to get there.
Teenage Fanclub
2/5
Is there really a demand for ANOTTHERRRR random rock album from the 90's??? It's not that bad that I should give it a 1/5, but it's just a rock album. The vocals are just a barebones version of great singers, it's like taking away all the soul from the song. Def another person's cup of tea tho.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
2/5
very interesting Pakistani album, it's nice !!! it's just cool music and nothing much outside of it, good to be on the 1001 for diversity of differing music
M.I.A.
3/5
The more I learn about this lady the cooler this album becomes. Great electronic vibes and her voice is so nice to hear !!
Red Hot Chili Peppers
3/5
A classic band with a classic album. I really like the amount of times I’ve played Californication cause bass players cant get enough of the song
Laura Nyro
3/5
if you told me this is from 1968 and i didn't see this, i'd heavy doubt you, as the production is so peak. nice vocals and beautiful instrumentation but it's nothing too better then good background music.
Christine and the Queens
3/5
french 2010's gay pop???? kinda iconic ngl, love the vibes but didn't fully hit the marks compared to some of my other goats in the genre. still a great choice for the 1001
Paul Simon
3/5
2nd Paul Simon album. It has his hit in it, cool. I just think it’s just so so so stock standard 😭😭😭😭
Nothing bad but nothing good either
Yes
2/5
Wow. What a lame album. Nothing about it is bad, it’s just eh prog rock. “Oh don’t judge prog rock on its first listen”, many will say, however it’s just not my cup of tea. Cool ideas over some songs but others (like I’ve seen all the good people) are just like… WHEN IS THIS GONNA ENDDDDD haha
Morrissey
3/5
Damn thay smith singer got low-key better in the 90’s. Cool stuff throughout it, with nice vibes
The Band
3/5
For an album in the 60’s, pretty cool blend of genres to create a nice listening album whilst I walked the streets at night time.
R.E.M.
3/5
To my knowledge the 2nd R.E.M album I’ve done so far. This is a little better then Out of Time, tho not my much. A chill rock album never hurts anyone, esp one with a cool bass player
Soul II Soul
3/5
nice 90's club vibes, recognized some of the songs even if i don't hit the club all too often. cool stuff, needs a dj over it thoooooooo
Suicide
2/5
Look. This is so influential for the development of Synth pop music. I gotta hand it to that. I also gotta gonna say that the next song that came up on the auto queue on their next album was like 10x better. It makes me so conflicted ahhhh. Plus some songs were just terrible in the vocal parts. Nevertheless, very interesting album to have included
Radiohead
3/5
came into this with the thought of my radiohead fans that this isn't a good album, and whilst yeah, pulk / pull revolving doors is on there... there are a bunch of cool tracks on there. interesting album inbetween some greats.
Minor Threat
2/5
good that it's an EP. i wouldn't of been really able to listen to much more of it... it's just noise to me, sorta punk i'm not really into. though really can see an audience for it
Prince
3/5
Solid prince album for never really hearing him prior to this !!! 1999 is a classic, and a bunch of other solid songs throughout. Have had a bunch of less then an hour albums in recent so it made it a lil harder to focus the whole time
Thundercat
4/5
Thundercat really killed it with this one !!! Incredible bass work, and whenever he uses synths, it also kills.
Fun groovy album throughout this all!!
Frank Ocean
4/5
frank ocean plz drop this one of the albums of all time and i need more then just this and blonde i beg
Sonic Youth
2/5
if you like noise rock, you'll love this. if not, the most average album you'll ever hear.
Beck
3/5
interesting album. so very 90's core, rock and all. nice use of trumpets and other brass throughout the album though !!
The Police
4/5
my twin's favourite artist, so no matter what i say apart from "this is the best thing ever i love every song wow" will get me flammed.
solid album tho he kinda has taste...
David Holmes
4/5
i saw a comment on this being like "The NYC vibe album", and I GOTTA agree, there's a beautiful mixture of the different elements of the new york scene in the 90's. one song reminded me so much of the main theme of the incredibles haha.
plus afterwards it autoplayed a song off of oceans eleven which he composed which was pretty nice as well :p
Cheap Trick
3/5
For a live album, this sounded pretty good, love how the name of the album was the place they performed the set. though it's rock music and it sounded a lot like a bunch other stuff i've heard recently.
LCD Soundsystem
4/5
fun silly disco inspo rock music from the 2000's!! what more could you want from music haha
Creedence Clearwater Revival
2/5
these fundamental 60's albums to me are just getting so stale. like sure they are very important for developing music as we know it, i'm just... bored.
The Avalanches
4/5
as a sample based producer, i can really appreciate a high quality sample based album. it's so interesting and i love all the elements to make it in a nice cohesive and funky package!
Elbow
3/5
i feel like this album is a precursor to the many album in the 2010's which sound similar to that, which is cool. nice backing instruments in the strings when they have them :)
Radiohead
3/5
didn't expect another radiohead album so soon (fyi 13 days). they are geniuses at what they do for sure, but another mixed bag album similar to Amnesic, however at a higher quality for the highlights. so close to a 4
A Tribe Called Quest
4/5
Jazz samples with breakbeats with 90’s hip hop ?????? And you gonna say someone rated this under a 4???? Insanely good the bus ride was baller !!!
The Offspring
2/5
High octane, full throttle music. The drummer is working overtime lmao I swear. Not my sorta music I’m into but it would deserve a better score if I was into it haha.
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
I feel like this is a good baseline album for if something deserves a 2 or a 3 on the list. Probably the most 5/10 album I’ve heard, pretty decent rock with nice instrumentation and stuff. It’s very standard imo
Massive Attack
3/5
Trip hop or whatever they call it??? The drums are just immaculate, grabbed me in as soon as the album started. Vocals are also very nice as well :)
Really in the border between a 3 and 4, flipped a coin at it landed tails so it’s a 3
Paul Weller
3/5
pretty standardly cool rock album, the instrumental songs were my favs cause they had a bit more diversity in instrumentation to them :)
Johnny Cash
2/5
this album is such an influential piece of media, a prison live album is such a powerful thing. the moment between the crowd and cash is just so humane. i just don't like country...
The White Stripes
2/5
i feel like this album is everything against what i personally enjoy in music. not to say it's objectively bad, the sorta rock they play just makes me wanna yawn.
The Police
4/5
A very nice consistent album from The Police. I don't think you can go wrong with them, solid drumming, nice singing, everything is just cohesive. Great stylistic inspos as well.
Deee-Lite
4/5
That album was Deee-Liteful. straight club bangers top to bottom. GROOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVEEEEEEEEEEE ISSSSS INNNN THE HEARRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTT
Pixies
2/5
people said to me "oh no not the pixies, they are like the smiths but worse and more pretentious". this peaked my interest, and after listening... it made me have the realization. they were right.
The Cure
3/5
i do like their new wave approach to punk, it makes me quite enjoy the listening experience for a genre i don't typically enjoy as much !
PJ Harvey
3/5
Alt rock which probably means it’s a 3/5. Tho I liked six man sextet cause I love bjork and it has that energy haha
Blue Cheer
1/5
The epitome of what I hate in music. 60’s blues rock with screams vocals with kinda eh mixing. Like, what can you do haha. Thank goodness it’s 32 minutes long… any more and I’d scream
The Band
3/5
One of my favourite parts about 60’s albums is that stereo that they have where the drums will be in one ear and then piano will be in the other. I liked the piano ear mmmmm.
Pavement
2/5
very INTERESTING 90's indie rock album. some of the songs on this... yeah... some of the worst rock i've ever heard. the vocalistic lowkey kinda needed vocal on some of time. however, they had some solid songs, so it's not like i can fully bash them haha.
Robert Wyatt
3/5
Art rock is always so fascinating to me. One of THE most interesting genres to exist, has so much quirky stuff in each genre. Very solid
The Bees
3/5
I'd say The bees are pretty standard for indie rock, i didn't really get anything too much special out of them, but like, def not a bad experience at all !!! must listen to fans of the genre tho
Soundgarden
4/5
hey if everyone made grunge like they did in this album... i think i'd like it a bit more.
BLACK HOLE SUNNNNN. WON'T YOU COME (?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!)
Gary Numan
3/5
One can tell it's an influential synth album because of how it just... flows. i liked it but def something you have to listen to rather then you want to listen to.
Neu!
2/5
another one of those “you need to listen to this” rather then “you would want to listen to this” album. Low-key forgot I was listening to music at some points, and the rock parts aren’t my thing.
Tracy Chapman
4/5
a delight of an album to listen to. this reminds me of 2016 when the jones brothers made that... cover of the song, and finally seeing how much better the original was. Whole album is wonderful, the messages are just so in your face and honestly we need more of these sorta albums to make people realise injustice. esp now with trump (yuck) in power.
Miles Davis
5/5
I am a trumpet player. I play jazz as apart of a bunch of my college assessment tasks. Miles Davis is my favourite trumpet player (i know, basic pick for someone's who's played for 8 years now haha). Somehow i've never heard of this album before, so yeah.
Brilliant. As soon as I saw it was a 2 track album I knew I was in for a delight. I love jazz fusion, and I never knew Davis did an Jazz Fusion album, though knowing his stuff from the 90's, why am I not surprised at all. Having Hancock and Corea on piano OOOOOOOOOOOOo just incredible stuff. Sadly don't know the other players on this album :(
I need this on vinyl.
Louis Prima
4/5
what a LOVELY swing band to grace my ears. Louis on vocals and trumpet was just such a nice and cheerful thing, and Keely on backing vocals was a nice duality. very simple but so rich in soundssss.
Manu Chao
3/5
A Latin inspired album by a French guy. I’m sure there is some story about the most insane story whilst this album was playing, because the vibes are immaculate nom. Would love more live I think.
Pixies
2/5
this was BARELY better then the last pixie albums i listened to... tho saying that, where is my mind SUCKS OMG. can we just wait maybe 2 years to give me the next pixie albums i can't...
Digital Underground
3/5
Ahhh 90’s hip hop is so cool, great backing beats, the vocals are fun and the “oh this is the 3min mark radio stations u can tune out” part is such an earworm haha
Burning Spear
3/5
beautiful vibes throughout the album, i found this very very nice to study with :) not a single bad track on this lovely reggae album. hearing that there is a Jamaican version however makes me wanna listen to that version too.
OutKast
4/5
For an album to actively captivate me for the entire 2hr 15min, this album must mean… something. I didn’t even mind it being double length. Great samples, great drums, the rap flowed so well. Great product
Christina Aguilera
3/5
I feel like this album is what I think IS 2000’s pop. Surprised there isn’t a hit on the album with the amount of solid tracks on here. Aguilera’s voice is also just mmmmmm so good
T. Rex
3/5
Quite a fun album but a lil forgettable… like I liked the songs in it, but i couldn’t remember a track once it ended. Saying that, pretty good for early 70’s stuff.
Orbital
4/5
Oh I KNOW people gonna hate this album to pieces, don’t even need to look at the reviews to see that. Beautiful 90’s electronica with nice choice of sampling, great drums, and gets better with every song. I knew it would be a baller album when the “when time becomes a loop” bit played for 2 minutes in the nice stereo sound bit at the VERY START OF THE ALBUM. crazy producers like to do crazy things to almost gatekeep their albums from the folk who wouldnt like it haha.
Bob Dylan
3/5
i don't have much to say... it's just an album. Bob Dylan doesn't excite me nor bores me - he just exists and i listen and think nothing. 3/5 because it's in the middle.
The Darkness
3/5
Kinda gave like 80’s rock album but done in the 2000’s lmao. Cool stuff esp that hit song haha
Morrissey
3/5
There was like 2 good tracks on this album, better than the other Morrissey album handed to us. His voice is less bad his other projects
Steely Dan
4/5
One of my friends loves this album and ngl when I heard some songs from this it didnt click. But when I heard the full album I was pretty surprised at how much of a vibe this soft rock album has. Pretty good with its instrumentation and its ability to move away from “conventional stuff”.
The Roots
3/5
Honestly surprised to learn this is an album from 2002 - this has such a mid 90’s style to it. Tho saying that, going off that era, this wasn’t special for the time so yeah. Enjoyable experience tho
Japan
3/5
album that is like "yeah i can see why this album inspired people to make the stuff i enjoy lots but since it's in that groundworks stage it's a bit less good" but i loved the synths and the tracks without Nye were baller
Deep Purple
3/5
i was pondering on my review on this album until i heard smoke on the water live and was like "OMG MY DAD TAUGHT ME HOW TO PLAY THAT LIKE 10 YEARS AGO OMG THAT'S SO COOL" and yea that's very cool. also a teacher recced me this album and i finally can say i've heard it. nice rock .P
Duran Duran
4/5
This is my father’s favourite band and I get why. Super high level production with a mixture of jams and experimental synth work. Plus I love the bass, I use basses with almost the exact same sound.
The Pogues
3/5
good old irish folk. def not what i had in mind going into this album, but it such was a delight on a cold winter morning. esp loved the waltzing Matilda track at the end
The Icarus Line
3/5
this was insane finding out that like this wasn't on spotify - so i listened to it 50 days later... i'm shocked this was removed cause it was lowkey cool but i get why.
Iron Maiden
3/5
I get the hype. It’s so powerful but also like also kinda relaxing as well… good blend. Not typically a fan of metal but I’d vibe to this
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
2/5
THERE WAS ONE GOOD SONG ON THIS. I’m glad IS THE ONLY REASON WHY THIS ISNT A 1/5. 60’s psychedelic rock SUCKS AND I CANT STAND IT. Omg wow how good does drugs make music, hahahaahahahhaha. It’s boring, whilst trying to be pretentious. AND THIS ALBUM GOES ON FOR 70 MINS ???????? ALSO WHATS UP WITH THE PANNING ON THIS ALBUM????? The sound and mixing engineer should never be allowed to be on any other records because this is such a piss poor job of how to treat music. Also the main singer just sounds drunk the whole album, ur not a vibe…
Edit. I wrote this 2 songs before the ending. Oh god. How bad are the last 2 songs. How did this even pass production. They approved this?????
Sparks
3/5
This was much more Japan then Japan was lmao (I got them last week so yeah). Pretty middle of the road 70’s rock so that’s sick stuff.
The Beach Boys
3/5
TikTok would have loved this if it existed back in the 60’s. Short and sweet and very fun, also rip that member who died :(
Aretha Franklin
4/5
this was EXACTLY what i needed at like 5pm after a long friday work shift.... beautiful voice aretha has, feat the better version of a bunch of people have covered. what a queen <3
Isaac Hayes
4/5
VIBES JUST ABSOLUTE VIBBESSSS mmmm i didn't care the songs were 10mins each they were just vibes nom nom nom
Tom Waits
3/5
one of my music teachers is obsessed with tom waits. i can't even lie this just gives off making music for music "elitists". not a bad album just has some bad parts, but the good parts are mmmmmmmmm.
Songhoy Blues
3/5
a world album with influences from blues, gotta say these albums are the reason why i do this. honestly could do with more african influence as it half felt like the record label wanted to turn it down but nevertheless a vibe
The Clash
2/5
man what where they doing pre london calling omg. i'm so glad they picked up their act for that album because this is just kinda bland but also the vocals are such an ick. the drummer baller tho
Ray Price
3/5
I found it so funny on the first track when he was like “tell me if you like it, cause I’ll make more of this if you like”, if I’m not 60 years too late to this haha. It’s one of those albums ur grandpa has in his collection which is spinning weirdly cause it’s been played that many times. Would love to hear this with a bunch of crackling on it, kinda was made in mind of that lmao.
Queen
3/5
This is just a Queen compilation album with just a little bit of differences cause it was live haha.
Black Sabbath
3/5
these guys ARE METAL. tho it's hard to say it as the guys who kinda made metal into what metal is. cool stuff overall.
Alexander 'Skip' Spence
2/5
a "skip" album for me... quite forgettable and the sauce probably lies in the lyrics where i don't pay attention to... nice mixing tho for the time
Nico
2/5
this was good but i can't give it more then a 2... i just didn't vibe with it at all, but it was good music. the 60's singer songwriter stuff i just don't like.
Bob Dylan
2/5
look. i know a bunch of people will say this is the greatest album of all time and be firm on this. i can understand why, it's just. this is my 3rd singer songwriter album in a row, and like... i do not like the genre. i can appreciate what it's done for music as a WHOLE but this is just not it. the harmonica solos also like are just annoying lmao
The Temptations
4/5
this album was awesome, once i found out it was a motown album i knew i was in for a TREAAAAATTTT. always great stuff.
Ride
4/5
My only experience with shoegaze is my bloody valentine and this random vocaloid album so it was awesome hearing more cleanish shoegaze. Call me a fan of the genre
Les Rythmes Digitales
4/5
awesome music, i can't even lie, i love loopy house like music for ever and ever. i just wonder, why THIS album. i know so many other albums in a similar vibe which have a better grasp on the genre which are better which aren't on here (like cassius omg)
Johnny Cash
2/5
look. this was just ur average cash album lmaooooooo. nothing special
Scissor Sisters
3/5
A mixed bag album - liked some of it and disliked others, it’s just VERY silly. It’s also kinda disco which is very fun
PJ Harvey
3/5
look this sounds like bjork if she was british and it was made like maybe 20 years later with a completely different field of mind haha. this is the sorta singer songwriter stuff i liked. liked the song with trumpet
John Lennon
3/5
Yeah John Lennon makes some cool stuff, just a nice and consistent album :)
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
2/5
Some alt album trying to be more than what it’s worth just cause it’s an hour 20 long. Not bad just, alright?
Siouxsie And The Banshees
2/5
Yeah this album was not it for me - too messy (which I kinda get it’s the style) and nothing really flowed… great guitars tho
Van Morrison
2/5
Look, I’m not too into folk rock, most of this is just a lesser version of the Australian folk rock stuff that has released since, tho kinda impressive for the late 60’s. Liked that one jazz inspo song tho
Led Zeppelin
3/5
Good album overall, just a lil long in my opinion. A lot of it was just filler but the hits HIT mmmmm
Gang Starr
3/5
The problem I’ve found with this 1001 is that gave me Illmatic FIRST, so every single hip hop album from the 90’s is instantly compared to that, and since that’s the goat, hard to beat. This was pretty good nevertheless, I did like the sampling more and more throughout the album, but nothing really rememberable.
The Mothers Of Invention
3/5
hmmmm. i have to think that they weren't JUST in it for the money. my main issue with most 60's music is that i find it too bland, but this opens with just, idk how to describe noises, and that's awesome. not something i'd revisit but an album i'm glad to have listened to
Stevie Wonder
5/5
Stevie Wonder is such a talent to the world. Whilst not his best album, this album is just… so insane. Every song oozes with charm and fun, it’s like you get transported to another world of just soul and vibes. I knew half the album also haha. Phenomenal listen on my morning commute
MC Solaar
4/5
I didn’t know just changing the language to French makes 90’s hip hop like 20x cooler. It is a vibbbbeeeee with how his flow and the samples behind it are so simple yet effective.
Solomon Burke
3/5
give this to me more then like a year ago and i wouldn't of liked it - give it to me now and i'm enjoying it - it's rock and roll but has SOUL in it. and not just soul, but SOUL.
The Chemical Brothers
3/5
this sounded like one of those "anti piracy" ad sorta music. like it was tryna be cool, and to be honest, it was cool. 90's pysch rock mixed with breakbeats is a fun combo and i hope it's something again. also shoutout chemical brothers for the 2nd goated album (even tho this is a 3/5 compared to their last 4/5)
Arcade Fire
3/5
pretty middle of the road art rock album - has it's place esp for being a post 2004 album so yea
Baaba Maal
3/5
King Crimson
2/5
Forgettable prog rock - nothing of substance and just kinda noise throughout the album. Not bad but just bland
Michael Jackson
5/5
What do I need to say about this album that hasn’t be said already?
Garbage
4/5
I was half in doubt and half in interest when I told my father about this album prior to listen to it and he was like “OH THIS ALBUM IS AWESOME”. Turns out he was right. Damn. Awesome alt rock with insane production like it doesn’t have a bad track in it at all.
Basement Jaxx
2/5
What a… bad electronic album. Look, I listen to ALOT of the genre and this is probably the bottom of what I’ve heard. I’ve heard beginner producers make 5x better stuff than this. Tho saying that they did make an absolute banger on this absolute, bingo bango alone nearly pushed this to a 3 hahaha. But I’m not that kind so yea
Buzzcocks
3/5
It was punk for sure haha. Reminded me of a band I played in for a lil while which played similar sorta music haha
Marty Robbins
3/5
So much RDR2 vibes in this as someone who beat it yesterday omg
Christina Aguilera
4/5
pretty awesome album - it's actually awesome pop music mmmmm with so much different inspos with great vocals
Dizzee Rascal
2/5
I can’t believe this is one of the biggest exports in the UK scene ??? Like really??? Not that I didn’t enjoy it a lil, but like it’s not that good of a rap album. The sampling is nice, some vocals but overall it just falls extremely flat
Beatles
2/5
2 because it’s below average. The Beatles are influential, but it doesn’t means I particularly enjoy listening to them. Like it’s such an important part of musical history and that’s really my only enjoyment of this album.
Megadeth
3/5
Awesome metal but I’m not into metal.
Black Sabbath
3/5
I mean yeah this is the first heavy metal album which is pretty quirky but I do like how much other stuff they’ve packed into this album, it’s so so much interesting instrumentation and that’s pretty neat
Wilco
3/5
Id say this is pretty enjoyable background music. The art rock influence in this album is pretty awesome, and loved it when it went to more experimental bits :)
Bob Dylan
2/5
I think the only reason people like Bob Dylan is because of the time. Like if I was stuck in the 60's and he was on, i guess i would suffice listening to him (even though jazz at that time >>>>>>>>). The more of him i listen to, the more i dislike it esp that ANNOYING HARMONICA PLZ REMOVE IT.
Madness
3/5
omg these are the peeps who made our house. pretty baller ska type beats across the album mmmm
Simon & Garfunkel
3/5
I love the instrumentation in this - it’s so rich and I love whilst it’s a folk rock album, they’ve taken so much liberties in making it as genre fluid as they could for the time. Nice listening experience - wouldnt mind listening to it in the car.
Lou Reed
3/5
Instrumentally I wouldnt rate this as high as I have - it’s just alright rock music. But since the rock isn’t that like impactful, I almost had to focus in on the lyrics, which was a shock to hear how powerful they are, always love an album talking about gender norms and breaking them.
Note: I hadn’t listened to the last song before writing this - the last song is def the best one on the album. Love me my ragtime? music.
Peter Gabriel
3/5
Exactly what i would think from a Peter Gabriel album like... good vocals and alright backings. Had Solsbury Hill on it so it gets a 3 haha
Aerosmith
3/5
I always find Aerosmith to be one of those cool 70’s bands and this def lives up to that legacy !
The Young Rascals
3/5
Was a lil skeptical about the title of the album but listening to this it kinda grooved. Shocked for 60’s music haha I’m low-key disappointed from the decade typically.
Fela Kuti
3/5
A funk world album is such an awesome combo and I really hope there’s more of it on the list later on mmmmmmm
Bee Gees
2/5
This album is alright but i'd prob give peak Bee Gees a 3 and this is kinda not as good as yea. Nice singing tho
LTJ Bukem
4/5
this is just not a 5 star album. what a masterclass of an album for the drum and bass scene in the 90's. whilst it's long length at a bit over 2 hours, it doesn't have a bad moment throughout it's whole listen. i love the genre - and have made some myself, so it's a cool listen to see what the "best" of the genre in the 90's was like. solid 9/10 album.
Beatles
2/5
Middle of the road Beatles album, nothing too special from it compared to their white album or abbey road.
Bonnie "Prince" Billy
3/5
This album isn't the most exciting thing in the world - I feel like this is the sorta album that would be helped with nice rain ambience behind it. It did help with with my studies though - so i'll give it that.
B.B. King
3/5
Quirky swingly big band with a funkiness of blues. Cool fun but a lil repetitive
Beastie Boys
4/5
It’s just hip hop fun. I love their licensed to ill album and this is just a slightly more modern version of their work - and I love their sampling too
Sufjan Stevens
3/5
cool singer songwriter stuff from the 2000's, and if an album has as much trumpet in it as this does, i'm gonna enjoy it. also what a cool album concept wise
The Zutons
2/5
Honestly a bit of a bland album in all, it’s not that memorable and instantly in the auto queue afterwards there was a cover of Valerie by them which was like… way better then anything in that album. Made me a lil disappointed
Hanoi Rocks
2/5
This is so standard and atypical 80’s glam rock which I wonder why did they include it - maybe as a benchmark to rate all the other albums off of ? Wish it had more going for it
Norah Jones
3/5
Very soft and beautiful album. I always can appreciate a nice jazzy (but also very poppy) album on an overcast / slightly raining day. Just not enough to get a 4 tho
Caetano Veloso
3/5
I listened to this album with my mum, and she described it the best “If I was in the 60’s and at a bistro, this is the perfect music that would be playing behind all the banter”. Perfectly summed up, it’s nicely spaced and has enough interesting stuff to be like “oooh that was nice from x”
Spacemen 3
2/5
This is like the opposite of reggae music but I think u need drugs to appreciate this album as much as the artist wanted you to. Me on a tiring bad Friday morning - not at all in the right mood for this. It was “cool” but not interesting
Steve Earle
2/5
It’s hard to like an album if you hate the genre it’s based off of - I am not a fan of country one bit. Whilst this is a good demonstration of the genre and nice playing from the guitar - I just can’t like it.
Simon & Garfunkel
3/5
This was very comforting - good length because it would have dragged if was longer. Esp liked the last song with it’s theming
Leonard Cohen
2/5
If it was just the Instrumentals ? probably a 3, but I dislike these sorta vocals IMMENSIVELY. i'm sure the lyrics have really good meaning but i don't pay attention to them...
i liked the last track the best cause he barely talked in it
Carpenters
4/5
this is beautiful string heavy pop, which i loved mostly every single track. the vocals were amazing and the vibes are just mmmmm.
Ramones
2/5
This is a fun album. Is it a good album? Not really, but it’s fun. The same drums and vocals are throughout this whole album and it’s almost like one 29 minute long song. Maybe id give it a 3 if I didn’t already listen to this album this year already, it’s not the sorta album to listen to more then once in your life
Led Zeppelin
3/5
You can tell it’s their debut album cause it feels so raw and unpolished - but hey how awesome huh. I rate this album and it’s def above the pack for the era it dropped in.
3/5
Look, I love funk, but this kinda missed the mark. Not like bad missed the mark, it just doesn’t have that hook to it to make it be a proper special album. It has its fun moments but it really drags at times.
Tom Waits
2/5
This is one of the worst albums i've heard so far - but not a one because those are reserved for the WORST things in existence. Terrible voice, most songs are boring but there was some nice moments in here overall, esp with the songs with strings in it.
Duke Ellington
4/5
Beautiful jazz from Ellington, 2 hours of just… nice solos and playing from the whole band.
Morrissey
2/5
another morrissey album?????? help us all, this was alright but not even his best so like 2/5 here we GOOOOO
The Rolling Stones
3/5
I find with a lot of the entries from the 60’s I’m looking at them too much from a current perspective rather than a complete overlook of the album. Realistically I found this to be alright - nothing special, solid roots but nothing to make it pop. But, that’s just the time it’s being played in. If I was in the 60’s and there wasn’t too much else to obsess over, I wouldn’t mind.
Prince
3/5
I'm a little disappointed - i got prince and was expecting this amazing album and what i got was a random collection of songs that loosely have a theme today - it's not bad in any way but nothing special or something i'd ever revisit
3/5
A lot of “not bad but not anything spectacular” albums at the moment - I did like the sax parts in this album, so that made it a lil more listenable.
The Monkees
2/5
Below average 60's pop, like i get the hype of the band it's just 60's fun and i'm not into that 60's stuff so i find it to be pretty, like, alright.
Buddy Holly & The Crickets
3/5
Very revolutionary for being a 1950’s album for sure - pretty well mixed as well, nothing id ever listen to again but something I’m glad to hear!
Derek & The Dominos
2/5
if this album didn't have Layla this might of been a pure 1/5. I was sick of the album within 30mins of listening to it, and it just KEPT GOING ON. i don't like blues rock and man... it's just so generic and just had NOTHING FOR IT. took all the soul outta me lmao.
Sinead O'Connor
3/5
Great vocalist with a great message throughout the album - however the album in of itself is quite forgettable - i can't really remember anything that blew me away or made me find it too interesting, not to say it wasn't anything bad. Nothing compares 2 U was pretty fun tho.
The United States Of America
2/5
what a revolutionary album for the time. it's very experimental and pushes the bounds of sampling and effects for the time.
that's all the positives i can say for this album. it is far from properly listenable, i could not imagine listening to this album again without it giving me a headache haha. i see it more as a piece of art rather then like... actual music, even though there are songs which have the conventional music flow haha.
Frank Zappa
3/5
A good mix between hella experimental stuff and solid music production.
The Mothers Of Invention
1/5
You laugh you go to hell. I can’t believe this is the 2nd Zappa album I get in a row and this album is just significantly WORSE than the last one I got…
Kate Bush
4/5
Am I allowed to say that this sounds like an earlier version of what Bjork did, still very cool but yeah def got that pop vibe to it whilst leaning into some beautiful world based instrumentations and vibes
Ghostface Killah
3/5
Very standard 2000’s rap album, few hits I enjoyed but nothing that excited me lmao
3/5
if it wasn't the beatles making this album... i'd probably enjoy it a lot more. this album is so revolutionary - it helped shaped most albums i've ever listened to in my life, the fascinating use of all sorts of instruments is just such a wonder - you only need to look at the review i gave a few days prior on Kate Bush's The Sensual World to see that I love that sorta stuff. I just can't... enjoy it. they just don't do anything special to me, their voices are annoying to me. maybe i just dislike 60's Psychedelic Rock...
The Clash
4/5
If I were asked “what rock album do you recommend listening to this” I’d probably answer this album. It’s a fascinatingly interesting album with great hits and an overall high quality across it. Third time listening to this album tho LMAO
Circle Jerks
3/5
For 15 minutes, this album kinda baller cause that’s exactly how long the album SHOULD BE. I’d probably get bored if it was a standard release but hey, nice work circle jerks
Frank Sinatra
4/5
Call me a swingin’ lover the way I enjoy this album!!! Super high quality swing music from the king of the voice frank Sinatra himself, not a single miss and from the 50’s too is just yumm
Astrud Gilberto
4/5
pretty awesome 60's samba album, i knew from when i first clicked play i was in for a treat, cool bossa for a bus ride home yeaaaa
American Music Club
2/5
This album isn't anything too special - it's rock and does a good job at that. i feel like this slot could be used for many many other rock albums that got cut on the list - feels like one of editors loved this album to death and needed it on there. #justicefoaustralianrockonthelist
Elvis Presley
3/5
Fever is such a banger song that I appreciate every cover of it that has happened so yeah well done Elvis. Feels like a bunch of singles but hey it’s elvis so one cant super complain.
The Stone Roses
3/5
I guess the description of “dance music drums over rock beat” really matches this- def had a sight preference to this over the average rock album. Last track was awesome with the breakbeats
Nick Drake
2/5
It didn't really click to me the whole time listening, I doubt this is the sorta music for me - since i don't really "hear lyrics" and instead pay attention to melody i found this a bit of a boring album but i'm sure it's got proper value to it throughout the world
Joe Ely
3/5
i don't ever have high expectations for country albums, and this was right on what i expected for this album (esp when i saw the playcount on this). there was nice instrumentals bits in this but the vocals were so cringey lmaoooooo. not a bad album at all
Sarah Vaughan
4/5
What a beautiful and intimate album - these are the sorta live albums i like. you've got people laughing, you've got beautiful vocals and the backing band just know what their doing. love me big band albums cause i'm a lil bit of a jazzhead haha
The Beach Boys
3/5
it's just simple, good, honest pop / rock and roll from the 60's. yeah it's def their best album.
Gotan Project
3/5
i was listening to this on headphones and was like "this isn't right". i moved it to my phone speakers and had a great time with it. it's such a chill album, great vibes, if companies hold music was at this level of quality i'd probably enjoy calling up companies 10 fold. i doubt this'll be something I well, ever return to, but it def had a hold on me hehe.
2/5
what a cool concept for an album but man did it just not hit LMAO, nothing of it really hooked me, a samba based electronic album is def something i thought i'd enjoyed more.
Adele
3/5
I mean this is like extremely produced pop music, if this isn't a 3/5 idk what would be. Without a doubt better then 25, was overall better in everyway to that album.
Rod Stewart
3/5
Hearing early Rod Stewart was a fascinating experience, esp since I love his later works a bunch more. I thought it was good but nothing too special, I have no clue why Maggie May is as popular as it is tho cause it didnt really get any real reaction out of me haha.
Tim Buckley
2/5
yeah this folk singersongwriter stuff from the 60's is just NOT for me omg. esp when it's not my first listen of this album - gets boring hella quick. the best thing about Tim is the fact that Jeff came into life, i have to give him that haha
Public Enemy
3/5
Nice samples, nice flow, a good mix of experimental stuff whilst also being a smooth listen. Will always FW political commentary albums loads.
The Byrds
2/5
Boring soulless 60’s psychedelic rock.
Stereo MC's
3/5
Pretty middle of the road hip hop / electronic album. Cool samples and what not but again, i don't see this album being something I'd of have to listen to. Not as good as Nas' Illmatic.
Michael Jackson
4/5
Michael Jackson is such a brilliant artist so ofc one of his biggest album is very good. unfortunately, it's far from the best, thriller clears the album in every way possible. there's quite a few misses on this album but overall it's such a vibe tho
Siouxsie And The Banshees
2/5
I got kinda bored of this album really quickly, it’s a bunch of similar ideas and it doesn’t tonally change all too much, good songs just a bit repetitive
Korn
3/5
I'm not too much of a fan of metal, but this was good metal, a lot of my friends quote their growling a bit. I don't think this is anything special, just good. Guitars were pretty killer tho, instrumentally it had it's cool moments
Tito Puente
3/5
I was shocked to learn that i knew as many tracks as I did on the album. woulda gone even more crazy when i was doing salsa dance lessons (maybe that's why it's so familiar). latin hasn't failed me yet.
Stan Getz
4/5
I knew this album would be baller before I heard it. A beautiful sax and guitar based bossa album, not a single bad track and it's just vibe after vibe
Joy Division
2/5
A rock album which has every element to be a great album, lovely synths and cool vocals, but underwhelms me in every way
Kid Rock
1/5
What have we got in this... country? ew. metal? can be tasteful SOMETIMES. some poser white guy? ew. i think this album is just not for me. Cowboy might JUST be the worst song i've ever heard I laughed so bad. I almost fell asleep listening to this album too so that's that too. I feel like this is for the people who think they can just start a band in their garage and expect it to blow up and them to get all the chicks and be living the life. nothing redeemable from it.
Led Zeppelin
3/5
Out of I and IV that i've listened to so far, this is def the weakest one IMO. didn't grab me the same ways the others have so far. def cool parts and all. I do wonder though, what's the importance in listening to all 4 of them, it's not like they are too different from each other imo.
Steely Dan
3/5
Not as good as Ajr, but def a solid rock album with jazz influence. It makes me happy when bands push the boundaries in instrument use.
The Last Shadow Puppets
3/5
So so so indie, always interesting to get an album that i feel like defined what would be the sound of 2010's indie rock and stuff like that. The oldie influences are used kinda tastefully (which is insane cause i don't like most rock to come out in the 60's)
Gorillaz
2/5
A lot of my friends really enjoy The Gorillaz... all I can say to them is. How? I'd rather the guy start a composing shtick and write some Y2K inspired Video Game Bangers rather then this bland ass album. There's some good ideas, but terribly executed with annoying vocals and just weird instrumentation choices. 19-2000 was def the main highlight of this album, but again; remove the vocals, and pop it into a video game (i'm thinking a gas station theme for a game like Simpsons: Hit and Run but yea). Shame cause it's the sorta music I would describe as I would fancy but it fails the mark so much.
U2
3/5
Sorta rock music ur dad plays in the CD rack on the car radio and you mindlessly don’t pay attention to whilst staring out the window to the pretty scenery outside. It’s not actually bad rock but you get the point.
Eminem
3/5
When I think of Eminem all I think about is that millennials are so offended when someone doesn't think of him as like the king of rap lmao. He's like alright, his vocals are better then the beats he's rapping over, it's kinda sad how lamish the beats are at times... though it's def a good album, def a bit too long for just hearing Eminem's voice but it had The Real Slim Shady on it so really does my opinion matter?
Prince
4/5
easily the best prince album. has a good blend of poppy stuff, funky stuff, rocky stuff, and stuff just makes you want to disassociate from life (in a good way). plus who doesn't like purple rain the song? easily deserves it's praises even with a few half misses on the album.
Mudhoney
3/5
this is the new meaning of grunge to me, get outta here soundgarden and nirvana. i feel like the genre kinda needed more energy and more intensity so it's crazy that it's gone the OTHER way. i do prefer soundgarden over this tho.
Cocteau Twins
5/5
I had to sit on this review for a few days to really get my thoughts in on this album. It’s brilliant shoegaze, a genre which I personally have fallen in love with over the last few years, and especially this year when I listened to Loveless as the first album of my year. This doesn’t hit to the same highs as loveless, but the overall quality of the album easily makes it something I’ve already returned too. It’s more pop oriented rather then the average Shoegaze album, but it helps it rather then diminishes it. Plus the vocals being kinda washy and not that audible is actually amazing, an audio representation of how I listen to vocals in music.
R.E.M.
3/5
good alt rock... i don't like his singing at all. it's def like the most "not my cup of coffee" stuff i've heard in a long time but again it's a very strong album so yea.
Grant Lee Buffalo
2/5
one of those filler albums i hope in the reissue that it got replaced with - like this isn't a bad album by any merit, but it's just a standard rock album.
Dusty Springfield
3/5
This is def a highlight of the 60’s for me, great vocals paired with a wide and vast instrumentation but brings it all together very smoothly. The hit song is def the weakest off of the album.
Ali Farka Touré
3/5
Vibes after vibes - it’s a good combo of blues and cool world type beats. Sad to hear it’s his last album - has so much passion in it.
Barry Adamson
3/5
Surprised that I liked this as much as I did, nothing groundbreaking as an album but I def loved the vibe of the album and the drums were awesome. Pretty mystical.
Kate Bush
4/5
This album is just beautiful. The one thing I just love about kate bush is it just sounds... always so interesting, she'll just take any and every reference of music she finds across the globe and fuse them together. Also running up that hill has been kinda saved on me, i'm sure i'd hate to listen to this if this was in 2022 haha.
Run-D.M.C.
3/5
started off me being like a "oh this is an album they've put on here because it's got one good hit". well, one, it's got two hits on it, and two, the backhalf of the album has some pretty dang good hip hop bits that make it into a pretty nice listen
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
The better of the two nick cave albums - the piano in it is very Niceu, nice music to listen to whilst stressing out on a bus cause it’s heavily delayed
Happy Mondays
3/5
Not a bad monday to listen this to, was a decently good rockish album to vibe to whilst going to work. nothing special but not all music needs to be to be a vibe
Charles Mingus
4/5
What a genius. Incredible motif which is just brilliantly used and abused over the 39min run. Very funny cause I’m transcribing one of his songs at the moment so this is perfect timing for his vibe.
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
Was talking about the best soundtrack album yesterday, and apparently NOW this pops up… what crazy timing. Great vibes through its 36min run, so funky and fresh it shows the peak of 70’s music me thinks
Suzanne Vega
3/5
A very middle of the road but nice singer songwriter album. Songs that are nice on a first listen but I doubt id ever properly enjoy again
Super Furry Animals
3/5
A real mixed bag between the bangers on the album and just alright songs. You've got some brilliant string sections in some songs, and overall amazing instrumentation with some of the most bland vocals i've heard. some misses some hits lmaoo
Dusty Springfield
3/5
shocked to hear that this isn't a motown album - it's got the vibes and everything (she prob did take it from black artists in retrospect). such a nice album to listen nevertheless, a bit of everything from the 60's
Jimmy Smith
4/5
35mins of peak studying jazz music to listen to whilst you have to lock in because the deadline of your assignment is in a few hours...
3/5
pretty cool to listen to new wave before it realllly blew up in the 80's. def an important album for the genre but since it's half a formative album it lacks that substance of it that the greats that followed it. good album tho!!!!
The Temptations
3/5
I was slightly disappointed by this - I guess I’m used to their 70’s stuff and was expecting more OOMF in their works - not to say it wasn’t bad at all - they had hits esp in the 2nd half that kinda redeemed the album.
The Modern Lovers
2/5
really has this "oh we have this diy not polished punk sound" that my ears and soul doesn't like. isn't terrible but i'd be glad not to hear this again. the closest is really see through tho
The Prodigy
3/5
Started off a little rough but then I realised it was an electronica album and that’s kinda half the point of it so I switched my mindset and by the end I was enjoying it a bit :) . Would be THE definition of the genre lmao
Moby Grape
2/5
If ur going into any album and thinking it’s gonna be the worst album you’ve ever heard - well, anything excites you. I hate 60’s psych rock and I hate country music, so seeing this album was like a “oh. No.”. Surprised that they kinda complimented each other? Def a weaker album on the list for sure and it doesn’t help that it wasn’t on streaming so dealing with the pains on YouTube didnt help at ALL. A 4/10 can be awesome when u didnt think it could be that good
Hugh Masekela
4/5
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL JAZZ ALBUM. this is like perfect background music, everything is just tasteful, all the songs just work and are so cohesive, and i love the moments where the band goes into just talk and chatter. really made me feel right at home
Depeche Mode
3/5
Very strong album instrumentally, I am such a sucker for synth heavy albums - which makes sense for a new wave album haha. I’m not too much of a fan of the vocal delivery but that’s a personal thing, it works
Lorde
4/5
It’s a beautiful electronic pop album with just great vocals. Lorde undoubtedly deserves the attention she has received. Plus green light is just so iconic.
Ray Charles
4/5
what a beautiful bluesy big band type album. Charles' voice is just... immaculate, and the songs with the huge string sections too just make my heart feel so fuzzy inside. A LITTLE too long tho, the same vibes for 75 mins sometimes rocks but if there was maybe 2-3 songs less this might be one of the greatest albums i've heard on here.
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
2/5
this is an album that made me laugh and that's NEVER a good thing if i want to think this album deserves to be on the list. It's not all bad but it's just super quirky.
Prefab Sprout
3/5
new wave album that ain't bad nor is it that particularly special. the voice are pretty good :)
Elvis Costello
2/5
An album that I wanted it to be finished on like the 2nd track and then it dragged on for another 50. Not my vibe at all but not abysmally bad
Iggy Pop
3/5
i've gotten so much punk on this list that this album whilst having great quality for the genre fills a little stale, but it be vibing at times. plus a bowie album always gets points from me
Hüsker Dü
2/5
Holy snoozefest, there’s maybe 2 good tracks over this 20 song run. It’s probably influential… somehow… so I kinda see why on the list this would be there.
Amy Winehouse
3/5
Her vocals are the best part of this album, it really is the foundations to what she did become. A little bit disappointed that there wasn’t any special songs on here but the vibes are great
Ella Fitzgerald
3/5
I didn’t think they’d be a longer album on this list than 69 love songs, but I guess I’m wrong haha. 6 CD’s worth of beautiful singing and standards from Ella, which sunk into the background quite nicely for myself. Due to its length it really started to drag on the 5th CD, but for what that’s worth it’s insane it took 2 hours for me to feel a bit fatigued.
Terence Trent D'Arby
3/5
It’s very 80’s, for its credit and its lack of like… uniqueness??? Nice listening experience and the vibes are cool but didnt really get too much special outta this
Tortoise
2/5
One of those instrumental albums that just fall into the background??? Theres pockets of interest and those moments are sick but overall it’s nothing to write home about.
The Kinks
2/5
Hi I’m a band in the 60’s and we’re gonna be so quirky to name ourselves “The (blank)” because wee LOVEEEE the Beatles but Theres a hole in the market because those “losers” have made more experimental music so we’re gonna make the same slop as they did just… 5 years later. I don’t really like this type of music it’s just at least with the Beatles that they are special cause they created this vibe, and these guys didnt.
Talking Heads
2/5
I saw talking heads and thought “oh yeah this’ll be a good album - I know a few of their hits” and this just kinda disappointed me cause theres just nothing of substance to this album - maybe I’m just looking into it wrong tho.
N.W.A.
4/5
What a generational album. Crazy that this is just straight vibes throughout the hour run, it def sat a great groundwork for everything that came after in the hip hop scene. I don’t agree with a lot of lyricism in, made me a lil like… oh. Great album nevertheless
Kings of Leon
3/5
Sure. Why not have this album on the list. It’s actually insane to me how popular this band is, but I guess everyone yearns for that late 2000’s rock lmao. It’s really inoffensive, there’s nothing bad to this album at all.
Moby
4/5
A beautiful dance / electronic album. Has a little rocky start but as soon as Porcelain hits. Wow. Spectacular stuff. Sampling is nice and very tastefully used with great synths and strings. What isn’t there to like?
Suede
3/5
it's a good rock band which has a solid list of tracks that are neat if i got stuck in a car with but not anywhere else. sometimes i feel like there's too many of these "forgettable but good" rock albums on the list, which kinda sucks for it being a list about tryna be dirverse.
Goldfrapp
4/5
This might be one of the best albums I’ve never heard of from the list. Beautiful and dreamy electronica pop and it’s such a vibe with the Cocteau Twins style vocals :)
Dinosaur Jr.
2/5
It’s opening to the local band you kinda wanna see but half was dragged by a friend core. I’m sure for the 80’s this must of been innovative but this sounds just what I hear everywhere, which makes this album feel boring and flat
Beastie Boys
4/5
This album is special to me. I remember as a tween always grabbing this cd from my dads cd collection and listening to it, but one day I just… forgot it was in the CD player and then we took it out to the tip… my father was not happy but years later I paid for a copy of this CD and we all were happy. Nevertheless, what a classic record, 80’s hip hop can never get old for me esp if it’s this album.
Jacques Brel
2/5
it's a nothing burger album but it's in french so that gives it some points !!!
Holger Czukay
3/5
a very good experimental album with a good level of interest to it. one of the last things i'd ever return to be it's always good to challenge ur earbuds
Radiohead
4/5
i think i'm slowly understanding why two of my closest friends REALLY enjoy radiohead, it's very good alt rock being so retrospective and like... IT HAS JUST ON it which is such a banger
Chicago
3/5
Such a hit or miss album, I’m kinda sad cause I guess I’m used to the 80’s Chicago stuff so this stuff at points made me sad… but the good stuff on the album are very tasteful. No 7 min guitar solo plz
Green Day
3/5
a very consistently good album, the hits are very iconic and a bit of vibes, great theming too. it's hard to justify why it doesn't personally ring with me as much as it should, with how much quality is here
Drive-By Truckers
2/5
i'm an australian i'm legit the further away in the world from these problems LMAOOOOO. it wasn't terrible music it just was bland, but had some cool moments. wish it wasn't 90mins either
Joni Mitchell
4/5
What a beautiful singer songwriter album. This is what I think all of the genre should be haha. Too bad I wasted it whilst supermarket shopping, it deserves better then that
Travis
3/5
This is a rock album… yeah it had some great moments throughout it but none of it is anything rememberable ? Nothing bad tho
Butthole Surfers
1/5
I felt violated listening to this album. Like at points this album physically made me feel uncomfortable. It’s so sad because so many of the songs have great hooks to them, it’s like they had great ideas and were like “how do we make this into the worst thing you’ve ever heard”. I can justify a lot of noise… like hell I gave DOA Throbbing Gristle a 3/5. I can’t justify this. This shoulda stayed in the studio as a drunkmen’s idea for laughs and giggles.
The Rolling Stones
2/5
I’m a little… disappointed from this album. I guess I’ve never been too into the Rolling Stones / the sorta genre of the time, and this is nothing special from it. Theres more from aftermath which was given earlier in the list for me, this just felt like Rolling Stones filler album
Small Faces
3/5
Such a mixed bag album. There's points where's there a good run of tracks and one is vibing hard to the tracks, only to immediately have a string questionable boring tracks. I did enjoy the theming of the tracks though
CHVRCHES
5/5
If I think there’s a single focal point of where my music taste came from originally - it probably is this album. Well, this album and Every Open Eye (which is arguably better than this album haha). I remember my dad first showing me this album the year this came out at the ripe old age of 10. It instantly captivated me, beautiful synth pop with such great vocals, which I kinda had a thing for British pop vocals at the time thinking back to it. Road trips would always have this record on rotation. So in a part, this reminds me of childhood too. The mother we share and Recover especially, it’s just… perfect. And then I wonder why Magdalena bay is my favourite band of all time haha, it all makes sense now. Thanks CHVRCHES
2/5
It does sound interesting things for being from a rock artist but like if I’m not too fond of the Beatles and this is similar to them but 30 years later then yea…. Not the biggest fan
The Cure
4/5
i prefer the stuff off of kiss me kiss me kiss me and wish but this lowkey fire too, better then pornography. cool post punk / new wave stuff, doesn't get old in the 75min run one bit.
Dexys Midnight Runners
2/5
sometimes i'm listening to an album on the list with someone else and they say the most accurate thing ever and i'm like "i gotta steal this". so this album, kinda filler stuff, which is insane to be on the 1001, like this ain't meant to be here. my father's like "oh this sounds like an album which they were forced to make to be able to go on a tour" and i'm like... OMG YEAH THAT'S IT. there's the random good song on here but it's almost pointless.
Sugar
3/5
I think I just want to listen to Kurt Cobain
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
OOOOOOOOOOOO I LOVE FUNKY ASS ALBUMS THIS IS JUST 35MINS OF JUST VIBES. if i had 1001 albums just like this i wouldn't complain
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
2/5
Just some bland rock from a guy who I ruled out with the first album I got of his on the list. Best part was when I walked past a construction site and I couldn’t hear the album
Manic Street Preachers
3/5
I had an enjoyable time listening to this album - it’s got interesting blends of rock with uniqueness to it. I just cant for the life of me understand why there are so many albums like THIS on the list cause the list people are just big rock heads who are blind to any other genre I swear
The Stooges
2/5
Boring 60’s rock. Don’t like Iggy pop so I def don’t like his earlier stuff. Also if one song is gonna be 10mins in a 36min album like what u doing…
Yes
3/5
This album is a bit better than a few of the last boring 60’s rock album that I’ve had on the list - but it’s not that special either. Just not a fan of the back ends of the longer songs - have a great hook then just overstay their welcome.
Elton John
3/5
elton john is elton john to me... he sings... he plays da piano... he does his work and it sounds like good music. i bet this woulda played allll the damn time on radio lmao cause it's good safe music.
The Jesus And Mary Chain
3/5
Maybe I just have the wrong opinion on what “shoegaze” sounds like cause I didn’t really get that vibe too much from this album compared to MBV or Slowdive or Ride. I did like the use of drum machines on this album, added a nice contrast to it! Nothing fully grabbed me tho
