Album Summary

Purple Rain is the sixth studio album by American recording artist Prince, released on June 25, 1984, by Warner Bros. Records and the soundtrack to the 1984 film of the same name. Purple Rain was musically denser than Prince's previous albums, emphasizing full band performances, and multiple layers of guitars, keyboards, electronic synthesizer effects, drum machines, and other instruments. Much of the album had a grandiose, synthesized, and psychedelic sheen to the production and performances. The music on Purple Rain is generally regarded as the most pop-oriented of Prince's career, though a number of elements point towards the more experimental records Prince would release after Purple Rain. The music video for the album's lead single "When Doves Cry" sparked controversy among network executives, who thought its sexual nature was too explicit for television. The risqué lyrics of "Darling Nikki" raised complaints from Tipper Gore and the Parents Music Resource Center and contributed to the implementation of Parental Advisory stickers and imprints on album covers. Purple Rain became Prince's first album to reach number one on the Billboard 200. The album spent 24 consecutive weeks atop on the Billboard 200 and was present on the chart for a total of 122 weeks. "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, while "Purple Rain" peaked at number two and "I Would Die 4 U" peaked at number eight. In May 1996, the album was certified 13× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Its total sales stand at 25 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. Prince and the Revolution won Grammy Awards for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, while Prince also won the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score for the film Purple Rain. Music critics noted the innovative and experimental aspects of the soundtrack's music, most famously on the spare, bass-less "When Doves Cry". Other aspects of the music, especially its synthesis of electronic elements with organic instrumentation and full-band performances along with its consolidation of rock and R&B, were identified by critics as distinguishing, even experimental factors. Purple Rain is regularly ranked among the greatest albums of all time. Rolling Stone ranked the album number eight on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and added to the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry list of sound recordings that are "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Good album. Bought the cassette back in the day. It proved he’s a musical genius & the movie proved he’s a lousy actor.

Not a perfect album by any stretch of the imagination, but certainly pretty close to one. I can see why Prince made a name for himself after listening to this. 4.5 stars, rounding up.

Fleet-footed, astutely sequenced paragon of ‘80’s synthetic rock, turbocharged choruses galore. Si, is this our first hat-trick of 5s?

I retract my earlier statement, there is indeed a Prince album full of bangers front to back, and of course it's this one. Rightfully a mega-hit, with almost everything top to bottom played by the man himself, much like an '80s update of the Stevie Wonder run. "Darling Nikki" earns it's top spot on the Filthy Fifteen. I'm betting on an unprecedented triple double 5 score, let's go! [EDIT: upgraded]

I kind of expected more, I only liked the two songs I knew from before.

I just don’t get the hype with prince, felt like there’s a load of filler on here. Even the “good” songs feel like they drag on too much 2

i didnt like all the songs but it was an enjoyable listen. for this to be thriller's competition is really cool to think about

Yeah go on then, a rare first listen 5 Total pop synthy drum machiney perfection, with copious amounts of guitar wailing. Very much of the 80s, and production possibly suffers for it. Surprising lack of bass, but this has its own charm, makes it sound almost sparse in its maximalism which is a unique combo Title track and especially When Doves Cry stand out as classics, but the whole album is definitely all killer no filler, helped massively by the 44 min runtime which surprised me. I feel like 1999 was longer, and I’m sure whenever we get Sign O The Times that’s a doubler

Ben ?

Another album etched into my brain. There is genuinely nothing else like Purple Rain: rock, funk, new wave, R&B, soul, dance, gospel, pop, and guitar hero theatrics, somehow all at once. Nine tracks, no filler, and nothing sounds like a repeat of anything else. I’m going to try to pick a moment from every song, because this might be the only album where I can. “Let’s Go Crazy”: No song has better bookends. Prince’s opening sermon makes my godless soul feel religious, and the outro solo melts my brain. “Take Me with U”: The bass synth and strings filling in all that open space. “The Beautiful Ones”: Basically the best Frank Ocean song ever recorded. “Computer Blue”: Did Prince invent online porn? Also, more absurdly good guitar playing. “Darling Nikki”: Double bass at the end of the raunchiest song ever recorded? Sure, why not. Does it work? Of course it does. “When Doves Cry”: Two lines I love, with absolutely no research behind these interpretations. “Dig if you will the picture” is Prince breaking the fourth wall to say, “Yo, this is also going to be a movie. Enjoy it if you will.” And “animals strike curious poses” has to be about banging in the woods. Or a zoo? “I Would Die 4 U”: Low-key my favorite. That fast synth bass riding over the real bass groove drives the whole song. “Baby I’m a Star”: An outrageously good funk/dance song and somehow the worst song on the album. It would be the best song on most other albums. “Purple Rain”: The greatest ballad ever written, with one of my favorite guitar solos. Six albums into this project, Purple Rain has the 1001 championship belt. 10/10. 5/5.

10/10… synth funk / dance pop / *1984

Excellent stuff.

Containing such classics, no question 5.

If that guitar solo at the end of Let's Go Crazy didn't sell you then I don't think music is for you.

Didn’t enjoy it, not even the title track. Probably something wrong with me, I dunno. But it is iconic, and the album art is incredible

This was better than I expected from an 80s pop rock album. Relatively sweet and short. 3/5

Perfection

Oh yeah.

Very good

One hit album, a nije taj one hit nije nešto. Ima on dobrih albuma, ali ovo nije jedan od njih. 2/5, 3/10

Listen, I know you’re supposed to think he’s a genius but the music leaves me cold. I find it overly complicated and tasteless, it doesn’t achieve anything that something simpler couldn’t. It’s not refined, it’s messy.

I don’t get the appeal 🤷‍♂️

Very enjoyable, and it has stood the test of time. ★★★★

A classic from my Gen X era. From the Intro, through opener "Let's Go Crazy", through the highly influential movie which sucked but was awesome, this is quintessential '80s. Songwriting is, of course, amazing. Nothing sounds alike and it's all awesome. Endlessly replayable.

This kicks ass.

9/10! This album was flawless, beautiful vocals and instrumentals. You can definitely tell why prince and this album are so iconic.

Un bon album qui s'écoute très bien avec des morceaux assez variés et pas de d'impression de tourner en boucle.

This is such a classic album. I remember when this came out there was nothing like it, especially When Doves Cry. I can't fault it. This is also a great example of good song sequencing and song selection. I believe PRince wrote 100 songs for this album and finally selected 9. Having listened to the Deluxe version which had some of the other songs recorded, the 9 he chose are perfect for this album. Some of the others are great as singles or B-sides, but glad he did not include them on the album.(5/5)

i know it's an atrocity to say this but i like future's purple reign more lmao

Very tempted to go 5 here. The hits are unbelievably good. I would die 4 u into baby im a star the purple rain is such a good ending. Think purple rain is just one of them songs youll hear in a 100 year time. Darling nikki lyrics are daft but the ends real good. 4.5?

You know what didnt do a lot for me this. Even the hits I couldn't be arsed with!

find Prince bisschen überbewertet, war nichts besonderes.

Bisschen zu hektisch für mich. Ganz gute Teile, aber keine 5 Sterne für mich

You gotta be kidding me with that final track, Jesus Christ, dude, UGH

Classic, Prince is fantastic.

“In this life, you're on your own and if de-elevator tries to bring you down, Go crazy! Punch a higher floor!”

Canonical cannon, I've been shot into another universe

never really listened to this album in full before and loved the journey.

I respect that the songs all sound different and the biggest hit/title track is the last song. Oozes confidence. That said, Prince has never excited me much 🤷🏻‍♀️

controversial take but prince is really hit or miss for me. this album is a great example - the highs (purple rain, when doves cry, darling Nikki) are transcendent. The rest had me turning down the volume.

A really great album, the last 4 tracks are one hell of a run. Very nice. Favourites: When Doves Cry I Would Die 4 U Purple Rain

Not a prince fan but I respect it

Not my thing. Don't really like Prince but the quality here is undeniable. No Prince songs on any of my play lists and won't be adding any after this. I guess I got turned off by all the "symbol" bullshit that followed this to be an impartial observer.

Yeah yeah… well…

5/10 tak średnio mi się podobał szczerze mówiąc, obiektywnie spoko ale nie do końca mój typ purple rain oczywiście zajebista ale żadna inna jakos tak nie spodobała mi się żebym chciala jej więcej słuchać

One of the best albums of all time.

Good music, just not a big fan of Prince

This album gave me the same feeling I felt when I listened to Bjork for the first time. It felt completely new, usually when you listen to new artists you can connect there music to some other artists or sources just by listening once. But then there are artists like Bjork and now I found Prince. These guys have their own music, it feels too original. Although it took me some time to get used to the singing, especially when Prince sings with the high pitch. I'm not saying it's bad, but the pitch killed my eardrums when I was listening, yet the songs are really good.

not really my taste

Prince was truly one of a kind, and I believe that this album perfectly encapsulates everything that was so iconic and special about him. The song 'I Would Die 4 U' is my favourite on this record and in my opinion, one of the most perfect pop songs to ever exist. The production on it is so evocative, with every little detail contributing not solely to a satisfying sonic landscape, but an actual feeling. Prince conveys a unique kind of yearning, love and desire throughout this record in a way I believe not many other artists can do. 'When Doves Cry' is another absolute masterpiece with lyrics, composition and ad-libs showing a kind of creativity that we just don't see enough in pop music anymore! Interestingly, there are actually a few tracks on this record that I don't care for very much (Eg. 'Darling Nikki', 'Computer Blue') but the title track, 'Purple Rain' is so immaculate, that it overrides any less than satisfactory moments. Prince's songwriting here ("I don't want to be your weekend lover") has clearly stood the test of time, as has his overall influence. I can pretty much guarantee he is your favourite artist's favourite artist. Easiest five stars on this website so far.

BANGER!!!! loved loved darling Nikki and the first few tracks. a few misses makes it not 5 stars but the vibes are vibing!!!!

It would feel wrong not to give Purple Rain 5 stars. If I’m giving somebody the list of the ten albums they should listen to this would be on it every single time. If you can somehow get through your life never hearing this album you have done something wrong, because this is as essential as it gets. It’s impossible to imagine how somebody could come up with these songs, there’s so much going on and it all fits together in the most perfect way, and it doesn’t feel like there’s too much. There’s a song on here for every mood possible too, whether you’re at a party or listening to the radio or feeling down you’re going to hear a song from Purple Rain. All the songs are beautifully arranged and I love the strings and all the other little bits that make the album what it is, using a drum machine too adds another dynamic that you don’t see too often in rock music (if you can even call this album rock music). I don’t think there’s much more I can say. Everything will have been said thousands of times before. This album will continue to be listened to for hundreds of years. One of the greatest to ever do it.

Гламурненько олдскульненько. Под Айзека было играть в кайф полный на позитиве. Резкий контраст дала последняя композиция альбома, почти что прослезилась

This was my intro to Prince (like most everyone) and in the years since I’ve come to prefer other albums, but this one has a lot of nostalgia value. Take my 5 stars.

Favourite - When Doves Cry Least Favourite - The Beautiful Ones (contains a significant amount of rather painful sounding screaming and screeching, which made me feel uneasy to say the least). Surprised Me - Darling Nikki Overall notes: - Safe to say this is by far the best of Prince's repertoire, displaying the full range of his capabilities, not just vocally but also musically. - Also, 'The Beautiful Ones' demonstrates to listeners that even the best have points in the vocal scale that they should probably not try to reach every time. - This album undoubtedly contains some of the biggest hits of the era, and compiles them beautifully among some other fantastic, lesser known, tunes that frame this masterpiece.

Better than Coldplay

love when doves cry and i like a couple others but not my fav

#479 I did not like Sign of the Times and I was not particularly looking forward to this. Albums tend to start on 3 stars for me, and I judge from there but in this case, my expectation was 2 stars. Maybe keeping the expectations low helped me here, and whilst it wasn’t something I’d be itching to return to, it was better than I expected. Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ❌ Listen before you die? 🤷‍♂️ Fave track(s): When Doves Cry Rating: 5/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I see, that opinions on this album are quite mixed. Some people like it and like it's "sex energy", others don’t, mostly because again of the sexual side of it. I think it’s cool. It was a stepping stone for its time, and it’s still cool now. Not every song, but I enjoyed listening to it. I also saw people saying the original doesn’t sound great nowdays. I compared remaster and original - the new remaster( 2015 version) is the version to listen to, and that’s the one I’d recommend.

Prince you talented, short, purple smf. Prince at his most pop god, commercial, 80s. While he still manages to blend the gamut of a variety of eclectic styles and ideas, perfectly. Making 80s production, well cool. Been a fan of Prince since when, know his albums through to emancipation pretty much off by heart, last listened to this a few months ago, so somewhat blasé when this came up, oh purple rain , but when listened through 1st thing this morning, omg, there isn’t a second that doesn’t intrigued, interest in all it’s sex obsessed glory. It really is like the day I bought that cassette all those years ago. you won’t get a bad word about this album from me, feel sorry if you don’t enjoy whatever. THE pop rock album of the 80s, it’s iconic, fun, interesting, dynamic ( and isn’t for me even his best album of the decade) it’s an easy 5 Star.

I understand why it's in this list, it's normally something I wouldn't listen on my own but I liked it.

Legendary

bangers!

really just a joy to listen to. such an amazing talent. 5/5.

The GOAT album by the GOAT

Tipper Gore secretly wanted to be Prince’s Darling Nikki.

what fun

Can’t tell you how many times I have listened to this album over the years and it still never gets old. What a classic!

Liked the ones I knew best, but overall good stuff!

Tiny, drug infused man sings about sex and everyone thinks it's great. I don't like Prince. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ❌️ not a chance Revisit ❌️ ★☆☆☆☆(2/10) Total reviewed : 453 Already owned : 99 Purchased : 25 To buy : 3 Nope : 326

Very consistent sound throughout and tons of bangers

Yes, Lisa.

I clearly missed something, I appreciate it and purple rain is an incredible song but the album doesn't quite hit for me.

did not meet expectations

I mean, come on man. It's Purple fucking Rain. How many of these songs do you know just from the radio? I will admit that I was a naysayer for many years as a kid with Prince in general but maturity helps us all out, I suppose. What a glorious record. "Let's Go Crazy" and the title track are a solid contender for the greatest bookends to a record ever.

I listened to this a couple years ago & hated it. Decided to give it another shot & it wasn't as bad as I remember but it wasn't good. Don't understand the hype but to each their own I guess

Some songs are really cool, purple rain (obvs), computer, and there was another one i can’t remember the name of but it was good. The rest was ok, but made me feel very nostalgic for my past friendships. I understand why this album was so revolutionary, but i think there’s more interesting music nowadays imo

I love the B side way more than the A side Probably his most significant album but not my favorite by him It’s still brilliant its this popular for a reason

The album that made everybody notice Prince.

rym 4.15 Dance-Pop/Funk Rock 跨越时代的潮流感。很多歌会让我想起张国荣时代的香港音乐,disco与funk。 pick: Computer Blue, Purple Rain, When Doves Cry

I don’t know if it’s because I just got myself back again, but this is the only prince album so far that I have really appreciated - I mean, it’s amazing, from first to last. Darling Nikki is a banger (heh heh) and so delightfully full of fun and life and lewdness - like the rest of Prince, I guess. This is awesome. So glad I get to hear it for the first time after d-day - it might have been wasted on me before, as a lot of albums prior to that day may have been. Not the Billy Bragg one though - that one was boring. You want a medal for singing cockney? Sorry, that’s mean. But I’m not deleting it. Ok. 5 stars.

Easy five stars. I even like the batshit film

Obviously perfect what else is there to say

Fantastic album!!! Really liked it, even stuff I didn’t know

# Album Name: Purple Rain # Artist: Prince # Rating: 5/5 # Comments: Great album full of quality tunes. Prince knocks it out the park with his signature sound. # Top Tunes: lets go crazy / take me with you / beautiful ones / when doves cry / i would die 4 u / purple rain # Would I listen to it again? yes

pretty awesome stuff. Honestly crazy that all these songs are on one album!

Reliving my youth with great pleasure

An all-time classic, and still good today.

This album genuinely changed my life and is revolutionary as fuck. I've known Prince's other hits for a while, but literally none of his albums compare to this one. It's filled with passion, provocative and explicit lyrics and such a danceable beat, only to crush you at the end with an gut wrenching song like Purple Rain with an amazing guitar riff that made a 12 year-old me realise how awesome rock music is. Absolutely timeless.

Prince put out a lot of really good records in the first sixteen or seventeen years of his career and this one, along with Sign of the Times might be the best. It's a shift from largely recording on his to working with a stable band, the Revolution. Prince still wrote almost everything here, but other musicians are playing on the album, which was not necessarily true. The songwriting and arrangements feel like a step up from Prince's already really strong work and everything on this album is fantastic. If the last album had a lot of new wave and electronic influences, this adds in more rock and some psychedelic elements. There are also more shifts in tempo overall. This album had five singles, but I think that every song on this album could have been a single. When Doves Cry is probably my favorite and probably my favorite Prince song. As a last note, I actually really recommend the film. The acting is kind of dreadful and the script is flawed at best, but the film is saved by the musical performances, by Prince of course, but also The Time and the Apollinia 6
