Interesting but somewhat repetitive. Lots of funky drummer with electronic dance vibes. I was grooving, but not earth shattering
Wilco · 1 likes
4/5
It was much more alternative and experimental than I expected, but I only had a passing familiarity with Wilco. I think I liked it

Queen
4/5
Really interesting. Especially the vocals that weren't Freddy
Aretha Franklin
5/5
So great! Solid vocal performance plus great backup vocals
Ray Charles
3/5
I didn't love this. Most of the songs were kind of gutless. I like the edgy vocals of Ray Charles but most of these were early 60s easy-listening style
Carole King
5/5
Incredible album.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
4/5
Really good album! I had heard the classics from the Greatest Hit comp, but there was more really good stuff on here.
Louis Prima
4/5
Oooh! So fun! very talented musicians and I enjoyed the swing vibe
The Doors
3/5
Not super exciting. Roadhouse Blues is the best but I didn't get into the rest
Destiny's Child
3/5
Pretty incoherent as to theme. Are those girls nasty or are they independent?
Sebadoh
4/5
This album was a bunch of fun. It was mostly right up my alley for grungy 90s rock
David Bowie
4/5
Radiohead
2/5
I want to like Radiohead but I can't. It just all feels so pretentious
Steely Dan
3/5
Lots of good competent jazz-tinged pop rock. No real excitement
The Offspring
4/5
Fun 90s punk
Dusty Springfield
3/5
Good Bacharach standards, well sung. It just goes on a bit too long
R.E.M.
5/5
I love this album so much. I thought it was just nostalgia but a fresh listen confirms it.
Tori Amos
5/5
Wonderful!
Red Hot Chili Peppers

Phenomenal players, but the lyrics in most of the songs are just so stupid.

Once you get past the annoying synching/unsynching opening and closing tracks, the rest of the album is really solid. Good beats. Halcyon is a standout

It's fine, but it's not a great album overall. Superstition is super, but lots of fluff

I appreciate what this album is trying to do, but the style is not for me

The Last Shadow Puppets
4/5
Such a good vibe. I came into this cold with no expectations, and was bopping and dancing within the first couple of songs. It's an early 60s movie vibe, redone for the modern ear. More like Kingsman The Secret Service than James Bond. Groovy baby
Van Halen
4/5
I was surprised how much of this is just hard rock blues. It's great!
Pere Ubu

Fats Domino
3/5
It's a fine album but not my taste
Johnny Cash
4/5
A classic! It has its flaws as a performance, but captures an event
Wilco

It was much more alternative and experimental than I expected, but I only had a passing familiarity with Wilco. I think I liked it

There were moments when the jazz was working for me, but the unlistenable opening track, plus the vocals ruined it. Since I managed to enjoy some of it I will grant it 2 stars
Kanye West
5/5
I was conflicted until I found a way to listen to this that wouldn't put any money in Kanye's pocket. This was my first listen and, although I have enjoyed individual works by Kanye, I hadn't experienced this as an album.
It was like very little I had listened to before. I didn't expect the humour, the skits, the contrast between self-deprecation and self-aggrandizing. The rhymes are so good, the beats are amazing. I listened to every word of the 1 hour, 20 minute album and at the end I just felt sad. This album made me laugh and gasp and dance, but I felt sad for what the man is today. I don't know if Kanye in 2005 had the same opinions and beliefs that he has today and was just good at masking them, or has untreated mental illness and 20 years of fame changed him into what he is now.
Since I'm rating the album and not the man, this is 5 stars. A 5 star album for me has to be something that I genuinely enjoy, but also appreciate for a unique approach, or a groundbreaking effort, or a contribution to music that deserves recognition. 5 stars doesn't require perfection but it does require innovation or creativity or generational talent. I see no reason not to recognize that here while boycotting the man in 2025.

The White Stripes
4/5
Joan Baez
4/5
Unapologetic folk album with the power and vibrato of Joan Baez's voice to carry it through
The Undertones
4/5
So fun! Kind of dumb but I'm loving it. Pop punk rhyming couplets without much of a point beyond the songs itself
The Who
3/5
This feels like The Who trying to figure out who they are. I didn't expect the blues tracks. The stand-out standards are by far the best songs (My Generation, The Kids Are Alright) where you really see the direction they will eventually go. The rest is fine and you can hear Keith playing those drums which is what I need. Not my favourite though.
Pavement
4/5
Lana Del Rey
4/5
I've been typically lukewarm on Lana Del Rey, although sometimes the big sweeping songs like "Ride" have swept me up. So I've never listened to a full album of hers until now. This was very impressive. Her voice was interesting as she moved from the highs to the lows. I'm still not convinced she's a good singer, but many of my favourite singers aren't technically good singers.
The music and the production of some of the songs is nuanced and subtle, but still engaging. And the inclusion of "For Free", not exactly the best-known Joni Mitchell song, made me emotional. A fantastic conclusion to the album, tying together the themes and subjects of the songs that came before.
The Cars
4/5
A classic! The one miss is "I'm in Touch With Your World" which sounds like an elementary school band trying to write a Talking Heads song. The rest of it is just a delight. Nearly every track is a classic rock radio hit, and the few new-to-me songs were great as well.
Prince

Tim Buckley
2/5
Tough one today because I was moving and grooving to the rhythm, and then I started listening to the lyrics. Oh no. Between the casual racism, the misogyny, the sex stuff and then the weird sex stuff, it's hard to find something to love. Still, I was grooving so I can't say I hated all of it

I hate this so much. I despise the insincerity and utter contempt for the audience shown here. It feels like an entire album of "Screw you for listening to this." Feeling that contempt, I've decided to stop listening to it.
Norah Jones

Purely subjective, but this was the vibe I needed today. Ask me tomorrow and you might get a different answer. This album is beautiful and cool.

Smooth jazz disco R&B. The title track was a nasty bait and switch with some excellent vocals and I was looking forward to the singing, but the rest of the record was instrumental. It all worked out fine, and this album gets the "made me dance" bonus, so 4 stars
Sex Pistols

Classic album but it begins to flag after Anarchy. I'm not crazy about New York with the homophobic slur, although it's an interesting song in context.
