A response to a top comment
Part 1: "I can't believe this needs to be said, but "this isn't on Spotify" isn't remotely a legitimate criticism of an album"
I agree
Part 2: "Spotify is a cancer on music (even more so than the rest of the industry) and is for soccer moms and other "I like to have something on in the background" casuals. If you have such limited resources that your only place to listen to music is Spotify and YouTube ("o noes, there are ads, whatever will I do!??"), that's your problem"
I disagree with Spotify being for "background" music "casuals". I think it is one of the greatest tools for easily discovering lots of music. For me, I have been able to discover and listen to so much with Spotify. Without it, the barrier to entry to my level of listening would be very very high. Before Spotify, the kinds of people who would have used Spotify as background music would then tend to just listen to pre-selected radio. Spotify gives "music listening superusers" so much more of an ability to explore. I think it is very easy to hate on Spotify and be closed-minded to all that it has opened up. There are issues of course, specifically for artists, yet I think saying Spotify has caused people to use it as background music is quite dismissive. In fact, I would argue more people customize and explore their music now than in the time of radio

I've listened through this album a lot. For some time, I would listen through this album every day more often than not. So good!!!
I especially like Orion. In the middle it really feels like a nebula. The title track is a classic and goes really hard. I also really really love Battery
Edit Nov 4 2025: I think my favourite track is Orion now

No, I'm not being pretentious. People gotta stop accusing others of being pretentious for rating something highly that they don't understand. Different people see things differently. Who cares how others rate things
And you know, I do really like stuff that sounds different. It is much more interesting than all the bland stuff out there

Needs more electric guitar solos with lots of distortion
(Hahaha just kidding I actually really liked it)

"Give a little biiiit, give a little bit of your looove to meeee"
Okayyy fiiine, wrong album, but anyways this album is great stuff. And so catchy: "RIGHT, RIGHT, YOU'RE BLOODY WELL RIGHT". I love the use of piano on this album. The entire instrumental of the closing track goes so hard.
Also they album cover is super cool. Somebody cooked here. Really I just love space-themed album covers in general. If you (the one reading this) ever make an album for the 1001 albums list, if you want to give me a good first impression, make it a space-themed cover :)

HIT ME ~~HARD~~ SOFT AND SOFT
(It didn't hit me that hard)
Edit: changing to a 3 on Oct 5 2025, I like jazz a bit more now
Talking Heads
2/5
I really wanna rate it higher but it’s hard to justify. I wanna rate it 3/5 but would probably need more listens first... I like certain other Talking Heads stuff a lot, just not this album. Take Me to the River is cool though it gets a pass
The Cure
5/5
The Cure at their darkest. No longer the angst of Seventeen Seconds or the dull and grey depression of Faith - this album is angry. With very little use of hi-hat and cymbals, the drums feel tribal and drive the relentless gloom.
One of my favourite aspects of this album is the cohesiveness. Of all the albums I know, this is the only one where I feel all tracks equally belong. Nothing feels out of place, and yet each track is quite unique - truly a masterpiece of an album.
As for album covers, this isn't usually The Cure's strength, especially post-Wish (except Songs Of A Lost World, that cover is great and deserves a longer explanation). Anyhow, Pornography's cover is superb and really catches the despair. It is worth noting that Damnation A.D. did a metal cover of the album, complete with their own great remix of the cover.
Further comments on each track:
1 - One Hundred Years
Doesn't waste any time by opening with "It doesn't matter if we all die". Second only to Plainsong in terms of Cure album openers.
2 - A Short Term Effect
"With teeth of madness jump, jump, ..." is so satisfying.
3 - The Hanging Garden
The best drums on the album. The "fall, fall, fall, fall" and "as the animals die" parts are so good.
4 - Siamese Twins
"I chose an eternity of this" - wow, great opening. Like many Cure songs, the lyrics aren't explicitly clear, but the presumed theme of 2 people in a (not healthy) relationship is done very well.
5 - The Figurehead
A dirty song ("I can never be clean again"). "I laughed in the mirror for the first time in a year" also hits really hard here. Supposedly has shared themes of love from Siamese Twins.
6 - A Strange Day
Gives a strong sense of not belonging - feeling disconnected from the real world and drowning. It is as if there is a fog covering the senses. "Move slowly through the drowning waves".
7 - Cold
The organ is done so well. Continues from A Strange Day with a sense of drowning, but now frozen and can no longer move.
8 - Pornography
In a twist of events, this is actually the most positive track, ending with "I must fight this sickness, find a cure. I must fight this sickness". The distorted vocals really push confusion and desperation for the first half (lyrics don't come in until 3:15 halfway through, there's no rush on this track). The distorted vocals come back at the end to round off the track nicely.
I have to say, I really enjoy the sudden positive glimmer of hope at the end of the closing track. It is one of my favourite parts of the album.

Calming. I like how the title uses the NATO phonetic alphabet. I really gotta learn the full alphabet...

"Orchustic" is indeed a good way to describe it like the Wikipedia text mentions. I dig it.

"Pitchfork ranked it as the 13th best album of the 1980s."
Really?? 13th best of the 1980s??? That's actually so cap. Like the album isn't *bad* but CMON... how much were they paid to say that lmao
The people at Pitchfork have probably only ever listened to 13 albums from the 1980s. Let me list 14 1980s albums. Apparently Pitchfork says this album is better than at least 1 of these:
- Appetite for Destruction by Guns N' Roses
- Disintegration by The Cure
- Master of Puppets by Metallica
- Hysteria by Def Leppard
- Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi
- The Joshua Tree by U2
- Power, Corruption & Lies by New Order
- Full Moon Fever by Tom Petty
- Thriller by Michael Jackson
- Remain in Light by Talking Heads
- Closer by Joy Division
- Purple Rain by Prince
- Reign in Blood by Slayer
- Psychocandy by The Jesus and Mary Chain
- Graceland by Paul Simon
- Back in Black by AC/DC
- Born in the U.S.A. by Bruce Springsteen
- Violent Femmes by Violent Femmes
- The Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden
- Bleach by Nirvana
OOPS I... accidently... listed 20 huge albums from the 1980s cause there's so many better albums than this one!!! Ok this review is just a dis on Pitchfork at this point lol

Closing track ("Tell Him") goes really hard, and "Nothing Even Matters" too. I Knew "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" before, great too. Also I like the discussions separate from the songs, a nice touch
Still, this rap album isn't as much my thing. There *is* certain rap I really like though, like Speakerboxxx/The Love Below by OutKast (it also has discussions separate from songs, which are done very well there)

6 stars if I could. A masterpiece. The sound and lyrics are really well done. You know it's a great album when someone did a thesis on it: https://digitalscholarship.unlv.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=5322&context=thesesdissertations
1 - Mr. Self Destruct
My favourite song on the album after Hurt. I love the intense bursts of sound soooo much. That is, the sound that plays when saying the lyrics during the 4 lines leading up to and including the "Mr. Self Destruct" line.
2 - Piggy
Sets up the album well: "Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore"
3 - Heresy
My favourite chorus on the album. Also, the raw drum sound is amazing. The synth that is there from the start is great too
4 - March Of The Pigs
I love the increase in energy here. The "Now doesn't it make you feel better?" is a nice surprising change of tone for a second
5 - Closer
Has the most streams cause of frat parties I bet, but Hurt is still the most well known song from this album (Johnny Cash made sure of that). Still very good song. I like the electronic sounding beat in the background. Also the fast synth after "You get me closer to God" is greatttt
6 - Ruiner
The synth at 0:49 is so satisfying. It feels very grand
7 - The Becoming
Pretty dark
8 - I Do Not Want This
Nice change up with the piano
9 - Big Man With A Gun
Nice intensity
10 - A Warm Place
A bit of a break after the previous track
11 - Eraser
I dig the hum-sounding sound
12 - Reptile
Good set up for the title track
13 - The Downward Spiral
Well-deserving of being the title track
14 - Hurt
SUCH A GOOD SONG. My favourite off the album and by NIN even. Honestly, a favourite song of mine in general

It’s ok
The top 10 songs are quite different, mostly ambient noise haha. How do you get >100 million Spotify streams of an ambient song lol. It does go hard though. But I’m just rating the album anyhow, not the artist’s top 10 tracks
The Coral
3/5
Funky
The Police
4/5
I love the sound of the opening track
Joy Division
5/5
I LOVE IT. I've listened to this album quite a bit in the past. Disorder goes so hard it’s unreal. Actually unreal. It’s one of those albums you either “get” if you’re in the right mindset, or else it doesn’t appeal as much. Peter Hook is my favourite bass player along with Simon Gallup from The Cure
There’s a reason this album was used as the cover to one of the versions of the 1001 Albums To Listen To Before You Die book. And it’s not just because the album cover is so cool (even though it *is* a really cool cover)

Below I attempt to self-reflect on what drives me away from modern pop. I list various interesting thought points for me, not in any specific order:
1. Production
I think one of my issues with modern pop is that I find the very good production techniques fake sounding. As if there's less "soul". However, this is still a very very good pop album. She is a very talented singer, and I find pop in general has *very* good production. But alas, I am basing my ratings more off of my personal preference.
2. Priority of Vocals
Also I find I really like the intrumental part of a song when deciding if I like it. That doesn't mean I don't like vocals - I do like songs having lyrics - I just put a lot of emphasis on the instrumental part. When I think of songs I really like, and why I like them, I generally think of the intrumental part. Especially since I like a lot of guitar-driven music, I think of the guitar/bass riffs.
This album, however, really places the emphasis on the singer's vocals and lyrics. I feel like a lot of modern pop can be like this, which is probably a reason I get turned away from it. Of course, MANY pop songs do have their intrumental parts at the front with lots of emphasis! This is just a reflection on certain characteristics of certain modern pop I don't like. I'm also not saying these songs ignore their intrumental parts. And the intrumental parts are very well done for the songs - especially on this album - and are just what the song needs. It's just not what I personally like.
3. Music Exposure When Younger
Another thing really worth considering is what music I was exposed to when young. People have found after all that in general (many people will be exceptions!), people consider the popular music when they were growing up to be their musical preference. Of course, this doesn't apply to many people!!
It is no secret my current music preferences come from my parents. A lot of what they like is what I like now. 80's alternative rock, really. So, I did get exposed to this a lot. However, I *was* actually exposed to a lot of modern pop as a kid too, especially in now-nostalgic situations. For example, when I was at daycare, whenever we would go play outside (every day), the radio would always be put on to the current top hit songs. So, I got exposed to a lot of 2010's pop and such there. Thus, I do associate 2010's pop with a lot of nostalgia. However, I still never really enjoyed 2010's pop at the level I enjoy rock.
Jimi Hendrix
3/5
Opening track is great. Also I swear everyone has a cover of Let the Good Times Roll (the more covers of it the better!)
Amy Winehouse
2/5
She is a very good singer. Lowest female voice type so unique
Talking Heads
4/5
Has lots of soul. I dig it
Memories Can't Wait cover by Living Colour is great. Was very surprised to see the original version here, cause I didn't know Living Colour was doing a cover
The Doors
4/5
I vibe with it. End of the Night was great
Deep Purple
4/5
I like hard rock. I like when they noodle around like on Picture of Home and Never Before.
Nice to hear the origin album of Smoke on the Water. Would be sick if Smoke on the Water had the distortion turned way up and lots of palm muted E string chugs. You know what, I'm gonna look for some metal covers. Still a great track
Intro of Lazy is really cool
Dire Straits
4/5
The cover reminds me of a Calculus textbook
Jazmine Sullivan
2/5
The album has important themes. I really like the tale and song combo
LCD Soundsystem
2/5
I vibe with it, I like the use of keyboards. In general I just find the album a bit boring for whatever reason. I'm not a super big fan of the singing voice
Also... cmon:

Looking at the album cover was the most interesting part
Fela Kuti
2/5
The drum solo felt a bit short
Minutemen
3/5
I recognized Corona, that was a great track!! I realized it’s cause it got well known as the theme song for the Jackass TV show. In general the album is ok but nothing crazy to me
Ramones
5/5
“ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR!”
My 2nd most streamed album of all time and my 2nd favourite band of all time!!!
I remember when I first heard this album, I felt like a lot of the songs all sounded the same. And near the end I was like “this is going on for a while, how soon until it’s done?”. But I really liked the raw guitar sound and still listened to the album more and it really grew on me. Now, all the songs are very different and it’s easy to tell which is which just from the opening guitar chords, when before it sounded quite similar
The nice thing about liking this album is that the Ramone’s first four albums all have the same sound and are all S tier, so tons of good content. This is their debut album and I would consider it their best though
I also gotta give major credit to Johnny Ramone as the guitar player. Their songs are mostly all exclusively barre chords, which takes a lot of strength to play for an entire concert setlist. Also the Ramones famously played their songs faster live, so playing barre chords with fast down picking the entire team isn’t easy
Fun side comment: this is the album I associate with making Strava map arts, cause I first listened to it then
And here’s some comments about each track:
1 - Blitzkreig Bop
My favourite Ramones song. Just perfect. Also super fun to play
2 - Beat on the Beat
I remember when I first heard this track when first listening through the album, I was like “huh this sounds quite similar to Blitzkreig Bop”, but now I really enjoy it and love that about the Ramones
3 - Judy is a Punk
My 2nd favourite track on the album. This one is just SOOOOO fun to sing along out loud. I love the “second verse, same as the first” and “third verse, different from the first” so much. Also “And oh, I don't know why / Oh, I don't know why / Perhaps they'll die, oh yeah” is so satisfying
4 - I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend
A nice slower pace song. I really like this one too
5 - Chain Saw
I love the bridge of this one
6 - Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue
😼
7 - I Don’t Wanna Go Down To The Basement
The song lyrics say “basement” but I swear I only ever hear “base"
8 - Loudmouth
Very simple lyrics but I love it. See I don’t always need complex lyrics!
9 - Havana Affair
“I used to make a livin' man pickin' the banana!!!”
10 - Listen to My Heart
I love the “next time!”s
11 - 53rd & 3rd
My favourite lyric to say from the album: "53RD AND 3RD!!!!!!"
12 - Let's Dance
I love this one. I especially like the other "dance" Ramones song - "Do You Wanna Dance?" on Rocket To Russia
13 - I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You
Simple lyrics like a lot of their stuff but goes hard
14 - Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World
Works great as a closing track. Especially the ending of this track
The Allman Brothers Band
2/5
I felt like the "Get on with it" scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Mj Cole

Vibed with it so much I decided to listen to the bonus tracks too. It helped that I was locking in coding at the time, so it fit the atmosphere well. Truthfully though I gotta give it a 2

Perfect for today. The album's described as "sunny" and it was a great warm sunny day today. Good vibes for a good vibes day. Hit the spot
Also:
“The song "Say It Ain't So" appeared on US President George W. Bush's iPod in 2005.” - weird flex but ok. Jokes aside that's neat little trivia, I dig it 😃👍

Spiritualized
5/5
I had never listened to Spiritualized before
I knew my mum asked me to check if Spiritualized is on the list when starting the project, so the artist was on my radar. When this album came up, my mum told me to tell my dad too, and I played the 1st track to have him guess it. Whenever I see my mum/dad, I get them to guess all the albums I’ve generated since last seeing them, but my mum said I should call him that day. He got it instantly - at the 1st note (I played the 1st track for him starting *after* the first lyric, since that line says the name of the album/track). He then said that this album was very special to him and he must have listened to it around a thousand times (whatever the actual number, it is a lot). A bunch of the music I like comes from my parents, so this made me excited to listen to this album. It also had the shoegaze tag, and I really like shoegaze. I wanted to properly focus on this album when first listening, so I waited until I had a chunk of free time. I then turned off the lights in my room, turned off my phone notifications, and I lay down in bed and put the album on
I cried a minute in. This really is something special
Liz Phair

+1 for what the Rolling Stones Exile On Main Street reference symbolizes here
Fatboy Slim

Truly great. Criticizing repeated lyrics here is like criticizing rock music for having riffs. It's the style, it works perfectly, and does exactly what it's supposed to do
Bob Dylan

I like Blowin' in the Wind. The rest would need more time to grow on me

David Bowie

Excited going into this, since the album cover is used as the cover art to one of the versions of the 1001 albums book...
I love myself a Rolling Stones cover!!! The rest could be better
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
I really like the light on the album cover. It looks very peaceful
Public Image Ltd.
2/5
The metal theme is cool. I respect this stuff. I was really digging the bass, and then found out it was Jah Wobble playing - that explains it!!
Unfortunately I have to rate this album a 2, even when they have other great stuff.
My mum even had a PIL shirt when younger!
Baaba Maal
3/5
Where are the drop D power chords?? I dig it anyways 😊
Very calming. This gets me in the mood for a David Attenborough documentary
3/5
I dig the sound quite a bit here. I didn't read the lyrics much... but the ones I did read were kinda eh. Voice is also kinda eh. I would love an instrumental of this album. Yeah. The more I think about it... an instrumental would be sick

I am separating art from artist in my rating cause he’s a nazi and if I didn’t it would be a 1. I can appreciate how it was groundbreaking but it still isn’t as much my thing

My mum plays the top track off of each album for me to guess each day. When I first heard the top track (the title track), I thought it sounded like modern pop! I was quite surprised to learn it was from 1977
Van Halen
4/5
I saw somebody say Eruption should have been the opener and I AGREE SO MUCH. Would have been soooo good. I really love albums with instrumental openers... Slayer's Repentless, Testament's The Formation of Damnation, The Cure's Seventeen Seconds... and the instrumental opener on 1984 by Van Halen is probably my favourite track on that album
The guitar tone here is also SO GOOD. Like OMGGGG the You Really Got Me intro RAHHHHH. So crunchy but also... it sounds wet?? If that makes sense??? I like that combo a lot
Violent Femmes
5/5
VIOLENT FEMMES OHHHH YEAHHHHH
I've been listening to this album a lot recently, since it's becoming summertime and it's a great summer album
1 - Blister In The Sun
Amazing opener!!! I love the part when it gets quiet and stays like that for a while. My step mum would say in clubs back in the day, everyone would get low during the quiet part. And since it’s so long, it would always be funny staying low that long WAIIITING for it to become louder again. I would love to experience that one day - ha!
2 - Kiss Off
“YOU CAN ALL JUST KISS OFF INTO THE AIR!!!!” I love the part where it counts to ten, and how “I forget what eight is for” hehehe
3 - Please Do Not Go
This one is super fun to sing. The chorus rahhhh I love it. I like the “she like another guy” whine and “she never, see, the tears I cryyyy”
4 - Add It Up
Iconic intro. “Dayyyyyyy, after dayyyyy”. I also like when the instruments briefly go quiet for “But I look at your pants and I need a kiss”. One of my favourite parts to sing loudly is the “WAIT A MINUTE HONEY I’M GONNA ADD IT UP!!!!”
5 - Confessions
Switching up the vibe now. A nice break in the energy. My favourite part is the closing line “And you see I’ve learned my lessons. And I don’t even want to hear about your confessions”
6 - Prove My Love
Another very singable one. Welll they are all very singable - ha! I associate this one with Please Do Not Go
7 - Promise
"This is only a guess". I like that part
8 - To The Kill
I find this one similar to Promise in the sense that this one says "to the kill" while Promise says "This is only a guess" as closing lines
9 - Gone Daddy Gone
The xylophone is great here!!!
10 - Good Feeling
This is SUCH A GOOD CLOSING TRACK. This is why I don't listen to bonus tracks when listening through entire albums. This is where it should end. Has such that "ending" and "closure" feeling. I really like this track
James Brown
4/5
I love all the screaming and yelling. Really, I do! It adds such energy. Makes it feel extra special
Leonard Cohen
3/5
Voice reminds me of the The The singer. Calming and wise man feeling. I like that
Nick Drake
2/5
Nice non-electric stuff
Gene Clark
2/5
Nothing that REALLY stood out to me on first listen
The Psychedelic Furs
3/5
Yup this is 80s
The Clash
4/5
Cmon, it’s The Clash
I like I'm so Bored with the USA it should have more streams
Cypress Hill
3/5
I have learned from this undertaking that the older 90's rap is actually ok with me. Stuff like Wu-Tang Clan and such. Never thought I would think this, huh!
Happy Mondays
2/5
I do like 80's sound in general but there isn't anything crazy crazy special on 1st listen. I would need more listens to appreciate certain songs. I liked recognizing the Beatle-ness of the Lennon-McCartney song (last track)
Deep Purple
4/5
Solid
Led Zeppelin
3/5
Didn't know they made Kashmir, ha! I didn't even know that song had that name
The Police
5/5
I really like this album. I love the meaning of the song Message In A Bottle. All the tracks are great and unique
Mike Oldfield
3/5
Good instrumental stuff. The vocals from part 2 starting halfway through surprised me
Paul Simon
4/5
Paul Simon locked tf in
Hüsker Dü
2/5
Nothing stood out that much
4/5
Damn I really got Wonderwall rickrolled at the start of the opening track
Kanye West
2/5
Ok honestly the instrumental part is pretty cool
The White Stripes
3/5
I like how they have a consistent red-white-black album cover theme
Neil Young
4/5
I love Neil Young: https://www.vulture.com/article/neil-young-ticketmaster-robert-smith.html
Him + Robert Smith try not to be based challenge (impossible)
And this gets a 4 purely because of the album itself
Tracy Chapman
2/5
Ok acoustic stuff
George Harrison
3/5
THE rebound album
Really put an 11 min song at the end 💀💀
Big Star
3/5
A strong 3
Grant Lee Buffalo
2/5
That R.E.M. guy needs better taste in music
George Jones
2/5
Nice if wanting this vibe. For me it’s ok
The War On Drugs
4/5
Calmer background music. I like the use of synths
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
Three Little Birds is quite a nice one
Randy Newman
3/5
Relaxing
Oasis
4/5
I actually like the guy’s voice
Stephen Stills
3/5
No way his fingers aren't frozen in the album cover
Joni Mitchell
3/5
It's Joni Mitchell. Can't not like Joni Mitchell
Prefab Sprout
3/5
Watch The Great Escape if you haven’t. Steve McQueen has a great motorcycle scene in it
The Smiths
4/5
I like the funky base on the 2nd last track
Bonnie Raitt
2/5
Nothing super crazy
Franz Ferdinand
4/5
Franz Ferdinand is known for their top hit, but they have a lot of other great stuff too
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
3/5
More of a background music for me
Joni Mitchell
4/5
I like the album cover
Simply Red
3/5
I thought it was pretty cool actually
The Beach Boys
4/5
Very creative and groundbreaking for their time
The Rolling Stones
5/5
This album is REALLY good. My most-streamed Rolling Stones album. Rocks Off is such a good opener. I love the trumpet part in the chorus. Shine A Light is also a personal favourite of mine. Such a well-made album
Gil Scott-Heron
2/5
Cool for certain vibes but not as much my thing
Daft Punk
3/5
Was cool background music
Queen
4/5
Of course, Bohemian Rhapsody is a masterpiece
Siouxsie And The Banshees
4/5
Arabian Knights has a really great bass tone. Monitor gives me Everlong vibes which is neat
Fleetwood Mac
5/5
Some cool use of guitars. I especially like The Chain
Suede
2/5
I found it kinda boring. For me, that is one of the worst things for an album. I did like the increasing pitch at the end of the 2nd last track (Animal Lover) though
If music is very extreme like Kollaps’ album, I actually enjoy that cause it is something different and pushes the boundaries. Something unique to “listen to before you die”. Kinda like how love and hate are not true opposites. An opposite of love/hate would be boredom
Red Hot Chili Peppers
3/5
Under the Bridge is a classic but the less-streamed songs weren't too crazy
Talking Heads
4/5
The intro to Once in a Lifetime sounds so unique and aquatic
B.B. King
3/5
It's a nice performance. Well done. Not something I enjoy as much
Edit: changing to a 3 on Oct 5 2025, I like jazz a bit more now
Miles Davis
3/5
Title track intro (first 4 minutes) was a vibe
Everything But The Girl
2/5
It is a nice calmer vibe
Dexys Midnight Runners
2/5
Do they REALLY need 3 albums on the list?
The Cardigans
4/5
I really like her voice
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
Very groundbreaking. There is some great stuff on here. I am especially fond of Foxey Lady, since I’ve listened to The Cure’s cover of the song on Three Imaginary Boys a lot
Dead Kennedys
5/5
I had heard of the name Dead Kennedys before but had never heard any of their stuff. I listened to the top song and was digging the punk sounds. And saw it was 80s. So I was like oooo this seems cool. So then I sat down and full-screened Spotify on my laptop. And brought up the lyrics. And then listened to the entire album while reading through the lyrics and doing noting else. AND OMGGGGG IT IS SOOOOOO GOOOOD. LIKE HOW HAVE I NEVER HEARD OF THIS BEFORE
INSTANT 5/5
I LOVE IT SO MUCH
Throbbing Gristle
5/5
In a way, I didn’t want to enjoy this album. But I did, and in a way, that makes me kinda sad
Peter Gabriel
2/5
Eh, I’m not *that* big of a fan. I feel like there wasn’t anything crazy interesting or different done
I will say: Don’t Give Up IS quite a nice positive song. I like the "Don't give up [cause you have friends / you're not the only one]" lines especially. Also, I liked how there were those guitar strum bursts on Big Time
PJ Harvey
2/5
The opening track made me think of the tune from the "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" song
Billy Joel
4/5
The lore of Vienna becoming popular only more recently is pretty neat
3/5
HOW DOES IT FEEL
HOW DOES IT FEEL
TO BE ON YOUR OWN
WITH NO DIRECTION HOME
Fleetwood Mac
3/5
The history around the album is neat
G. Love & Special Sauce
2/5
Yeah, quite laid back. I like that about them
Don McLean
3/5
OH MYY, MYYY THIS HERE ANAKIN GUY
MAYBE VADER SOMEDAY LATER, NOW HE'S JUST A SMALL FRY
HE LEFT HIS HOME AND KISSED HIS MOMMY GOODBYE
SAYING "SOON I'M GONNA BE A JEDI"
"SOON I'M GONNA BE A JEDI"
Title track is cool, really because I have a soft spot for it cause of the Weird Al cover. The rest was ok to me
Jack White
3/5
I liked how it was more guitar-centric than other stuff
Run-D.M.C.
4/5
Got major Beastie Boys vibes, and it turns out that after a quick search: Run-D.M.C. DID influence them! In fact, Run-D.M.C. helped create Paul Revere on Licensed to Ill. Neat!!
I also really like how they alternate saying things. It is done very well here
Fleet Foxes
4/5
I like how relaxing it is. The vocal sound fits well with the instrumental sound
The Velvet Underground
4/5
Quoting exactly how I feel:
"considering the fact that this came out in 1968 i would say they were ahead of the curve in terms of weird noise music. didn’t know what to expect really going into this but i wasn’t disappointed tbh. maybe a hot take but i actually liked this, not exactly the type of music you’d put on for a chill vibe while studying but i take loud and weird over boring and forgettable any day"
Funkadelic
3/5
Very deserving of the name Funkadelic
FRIED ICE CREAM IS A REALITY
I liked the cult-like repeating of "Fried ice cream is a reality!". That was fun
I can just feel the vibes of how this is a great and historic album
Metallica
5/5
A very cool combo
Burning Spear
3/5
The prominent bass is very nice here. I very much enjoy when bass isn't buried in the mix
Led Zeppelin
4/5
A part in Dazed and Confused reminded me of the intro to Paranoid
A very solid album
The Cult
5/5
I LOVE THE CULT SO MUCH
They don’t get nearly enough praise overall. And on this site, this album gets hated on way too much. Thankfully, me and the other 8 Electric enjoyers on this site will give it 5 stars
The solo on Aphrodisiac Jacket will always be top tier. The first solo I went about learning on guitar
American Music Club
2/5
Van Morrison
3/5
A really fun live album. I really liked everyone's enthusiasm
Aretha Franklin
2/5
She is a good singer, that's for sure. I've never really liked R&B stuff that much though
Orbital
4/5
Top comment was a fun read
Such a vibe when cooking so squeezes out the 4
Agree about Quality Seconds
Gillian Welch
3/5
Earlier in the album I was thinking of a 2. But I stayed open, cause maybe I would like the later album tracks. And then OMG yeah the closing track is top tier 😭😭
Gets a 3 for overall, but damn that last track was much above a 3
The Doors
3/5
The opening track The Changeling reminds of Funky Town
Peter Frampton
4/5
That was a fun listen. I like the crowd's enthusiasm
Black Sabbath
5/5
You already know it’s gotta be a 5. My favourite Sabbath album
Steely Dan
4/5
The production is immaculate
Prince
2/5
I had never listened to Prince before, so was good for me to check this out. I wasn’t that interested though. Metaphors in the closing tracks were a neat part
The Beta Band
2/5
I don't really like The Beta Band. Found some info online about why they have TWO albums on the list
My findings: their main influencial stuff is a compilation album, and thus uneligible for the list. And they aren't in the newer versions of the 1001 albums list anyways.
See the following found online:
"I looked up the band after getting Hot Shots II to see what was so special about them to merit an inclusion, and apparently they were pretty influential in their approach of blending electronic with rock and were an influence on Radiohead's more experimental stuff in the 00s.
The problem is that their influential stuff appears to be a series of EPs they made at the end of the 90s and was later compiled into a compilation album, which means that album probably would have been both a better representation as to why this band was special, and would have used one less slot in the book. Or maybe I'm wrong and you just had to be there, I don't know."
And:
"Both albums did feature in the 2005 edition, then Hot Shots II was removed for the 2008 edition, and by the 2011 edition both albums were gone.
So it went from two to one to zero. "
Tangerine Dream
5/5
This turned out to be really good. Very atmospheric. And in 1974. Wow!
Leonard Cohen
3/5
Suzanne is a good track
The Killers
3/5
Was cool to hear the big songs, cause I didn’t know they were from this artist or album
Pretenders
3/5
I like the bass on this one
Les Rythmes Digitales
3/5
Some catchy parts, and also some more eh parts. The catchy parts I really vibed with. Repetition is used well here
3/5
I liked the track Horses In My Dreams here. And the end of the closing track
George Michael
3/5
I like the title track quite a bit. The rest didn't stand out to me as much
Chicago
2/5
I liked "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" and "Free Form Guitar"
The Temptations
3/5
Very pleasant for a morning sunrise drive
Happy Mondays
2/5
Grandbag's Funeral riff was a little bit of something... but not really
Damn like this stuff isn't THAT crazy or different. I am surprised they got as big as they did.
James Taylor
2/5
It didn't click with me that much. Neat to listen to for the piece of history at least
Dinosaur Jr.
5/5
About the cover of Just Like Heaven by The Cure:
THIS IS HOW COVERS SHOULD BE DONE. It is building off of the original by adding new elements, instead of being a simple copy. For example, there is the guitar wobble on the main riff, and the yelling of "YOU!". Also, the abrupt cut off after the first "YOU!" at the end of the song. Unique! I like that!
I really love bands who excell at doing great covers that build on the original. For example, Siouxsie and the Banshees. Their Dear Prudence with the layered vocals saying "Deeeaarrr Prudenceee" is top tier. Also, their cover of Helter Skelter is very neat in how it starts off slow instead of fast live the original
Depeche Mode
5/5
Top tier
Khaled
3/5
There's something I like about music where I don't know what they are saying (well, the French I know hehe). It feels nice to break away from all the English stuff
And anybody who covers Imagine is cool in my books. I really love that song
Beach House
4/5
Quite calming. Shoegaze-like. I like the closing track Take Care 🥹
Public Enemy
3/5
The 1001 albums journey has made me appreciate this stuff. I like that about the challenge - getting to appreciate stuff you wouldn't have
Gary Numan
5/5
Gary Numan my beloved
Randy Newman
4/5
I liked Sail Away and Old Man. I like his voice - it matches the songs well
The Avalanches
3/5
There’s something beautiful about this, that I can’t quite put my finger on
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
3/5
Neil Young is cool. I like the opening track
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
5/5
No, I'm not being pretentious. People gotta stop accusing others of being pretentious for rating something highly that they don't understand. Different people see things differently. Who cares how others rate things
And you know, I do really like stuff that sounds different. It is much more interesting than all the bland stuff out there
Jeru The Damaja
2/5
I didn't connect with it that much. I really like Wu-Tang, so was sorta hoping it would be more like that (with them being from the same wave and all)
R.E.M.
3/5
I like the guy's voice
Doves
2/5
And as a surprise to no one, the 1001 albums general editor is British
Frank Sinatra
4/5
I like this kinda 50's stuff
Dexys Midnight Runners
2/5
I find the album overall pretty bland and uninteresting. Yeah it’s got the big track but the rest of the album isn’t strong enough to hold up
Radiohead
2/5
I didn’t vibe with this album that much
Michael Jackson
4/5
First song is such a vibe
Marvin Gaye
2/5
I’m not a big soul guy
Santana
3/5
That was nice for a change
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
2/5
Or you could just make a punk album, that would be a sick genre switch
Joe Ely
2/5
It wasn't really my thing. Good for me to experience it nonetheless, given all the praise by critics
Coldcut
2/5
It was good for me to listen to this for the historical and educational component. Wasn't the kind of thing I enjoy assss much though
Thelonious Monk
2/5
The album cover is sorta neat. I didn't connect with the music that much
Doves
2/5
PLEASE CAN WE REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF BRITISH ROCK THAT I *DO NOT* NEED TO LISTEN TO BEFORE I DIE
Bob Dylan
2/5
If some other guy sang this instead... would it still be on the list...
Rush
4/5
I thought it could of had 5 potential. Maybe if I listened to it more
Ananda Shankar
4/5
I quite liked the covers. Overall nice album for a change
The Stooges
5/5
One CANNOT play this loud enough
I love dancing around my room to this while blasting it on the headphones
The Jesus And Mary Chain
5/5
This is one of my favourite albums of all time. And that’s saying a lot. I absolutely adore it. I LOOOOOOOOVE the sound, I just can't get enough. The feedback on the guitars really sounds soooo good to me
I also really like the lyrics
Bill Evans Trio
2/5
Again, I just didn't connect with it that much
Aimee Mann
2/5
The track I've Had It was neat. The rest: not so much
Nick Drake
3/5
That was nice and peaceful
Muddy Waters
3/5
Some solid stuff there
The Smiths
4/5
Don't worry sweetness I was only joking
Carole King
3/5
It was ok
5/5
I
I I I
I'M GONNA
I'M GONNA KICK EM OUT
KICK OUT THE JAMS!!!
The Temptations
3/5
The guitar burts on Love Is A Hurtin' Thing reminded me of Worried About You on Tattoo You by The Rolling Stones
Holger Czukay
2/5
Interesting in that sounded quite different at times. Wasn't that fun though
Einstürzende Neubauten
5/5
The list needs more weird and different stuff
Charles Mingus
4/5
The highest rated jazz album of all time on Rate Your Music (https://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/album/all-time/g:jazz/)
Solid
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
I like "Keep On Chooglin'". That's fun to say. Chooglin. Chooglin chooglin chooglin. Chooglin!
Alice Cooper
3/5
I liked the closing track, and how it was named such as being a closing track
The Rolling Stones
5/5
Such a good Rolling Stones album. My favourite one is Some Girls, and this is second. Or third after Tattoo You
The Who
2/5
I didn’t know Magic Bus was one of their bigger songs
Kings of Leon
2/5
I found it quite boring and safe
Steely Dan
4/5
Rikki don’t looose that numberrr
The Smashing Pumpkins
4/5
I really like Galapogos, guitar tones used, and of course: 1979
The voice and some lyrics I do find annoying
Eagles
4/5
I really like Wasted Time + Reprise, Try and Love Again, and The Last Resort
Björk
4/5
This was very interesting. I like things in the list that are interesting
Boards of Canada
4/5
The slower atmosphere was very nice
I could tell that the track Roygbiv would be a more popular track as soon as it started (in fact, it is the most streamed song by the artist). It reminds me a lot of the song All I Need by Radiohead
Aquarius with the counting that suddenly stopped counting in order, and the kids laughing and "yeahhh, that's right" was such a vibe
I also liked the message of the spoken word of the closing track (track 17 - note that track 18 is a bonus track)
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
A bit too pop-y for me to get the 5. I quite like it though. Especially Dancing in the Dark
Nirvana
4/5
Solid but overrated
The Mothers Of Invention
5/5
I thoroughly enjoyed this one. So many great tracks! I especially liked these on my first listen:
Who Are The Brain Police?, Go Cry On Somebody Else's Shoulder, Motherly Love, How Could I Be Such A Fool, Wowie Zowie, Anyway The Wind Blows, You're Probably Wondering Why I'm Here, Help, I'm A Rock (great one!!!), The Return Of The Son Of Monster Magnet (the cream cheese song)
That's a lot of tracks!
The Band
3/5
Nothing stood out to me that much. Though, there is: "They call him Ragtime Willie" - Rockin' Chair
The Notorious B.I.G.
4/5
I really liked this one. Didn't expect that!
The skit at the end of Warning with them both realizing they have red dots on their head is funny
> Oh, shit
> What? What's wrong?
> What's that red dot on your head, man?
> What red dot?
> Oh, shit! You got a red dot on your head, too
> Oh, shit!
Dr. Octagon
2/5
Icky. Such as in the track Girl Let Me Touch You
Songhoy Blues
4/5
This album has such a vibe. I especially loved Irganda
Fugees
2/5
I tend to not really like R&B stuff that much. I do like albums with skits and that feel like a connected album though. Like mentioning the “Killing me softly with his song” lyric on other tracks that weren’t that one. Also the “add a motherfucker so you listen” line does indeed go hard
Ozomatli
3/5
I liked the instrumental side of it. I didn’t like some of the lyrics in the earlier tracks
Stevie Wonder
4/5
I like the positivity
Frank Ocean
2/5
I didn't find it that interesting. I liked the organ-like synth on Bad Religion
Mudhoney
4/5
Early grunge, neat. I liked the guitar tone
Slayer
5/5
SLAAAYEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of my favourite albums of ALL time
The White Stripes
3/5
I liked it a bit better than Get Behind Me Satan. We're Going To Be Friends reminds me of The Beatles
Janis Joplin
4/5
I really like her voice. And the closing track Get It While You Can. A nice message there
X-Ray Spex
4/5
I liked the "don't care" attitude
YEAH I, HIT HIM BACK
WITH MY, PET, RRRRAT
Ice Cube
3/5
I was vibing, but I didn’t like it assss much as other 90’s rap
The Verve
3/5
I generally don’t like britpop *that* much. This one didn’t really do it for me. Quite generic, not very interesting. Yeah Bitter Sweet Symphony has a nice instrumental
De La Soul
3/5
Nice and fun. I liked the track (3 Is) The Magic Number. I also really like how these 90's rap albums tend to have all these intermission tracks, which I love in albums. Also, I like the game show storyline
Paul McCartney
3/5
I liked listening to it for the historical context. I didn’t get as much out of it. I do like how it is one of the earlier “DIY” approach albums. I like on the 2nd track where he made the beatboxing type sounds
Morrissey
3/5
I was quite surprised by the instant synthy sounds on the 1st track. Doing some shredding at the end of I Don’t Mind If You Forget Me was also quite unexpected
Elvis Costello
3/5
Elvis Costello generally doesn’t really do it for me. I found it a little plain
John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers
3/5
Liked it better than I thought I would. What’d I Say reminded me of some song… not sure which…
The Boo Radleys
3/5
The bass tone gave me PIL/Jah Wobble vibes (I like that). I really like how if you dive into thinking about the bass, it is quite prominent. It is there, waiting for you to focus on it
Black Sabbath
4/5
I really like the first Black Sabbath album. This one I don’t feel as strongly about. Part of it is the pop-y-ness. For example, I don’t like Iron Man. I find that one very boring
Tears For Fears
4/5
Solid stuff here. Very 80's in a great way that I love. The pop-y-ness is what prevents it from getting higher from me
Blur
4/5
This was a very fun album. Quite diverse - all over the place!
In Tracy Jacks, I love how the first guitar strum isn't synced between the left and right speakers. There is a slight delay. That really caught me off guard when listening through the album. I instantly rewinded to hear that again!
Queen
4/5
That was fun! I like the guitar tone. I also like when albums have instrumental opener tracks
The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke gave me vibes of that one Star Wars instrumental for a bit hehe
Led Zeppelin
3/5
I wasn’t that big a fan of the more acoustic tracks
The Zutons
2/5
It annoys me when 2000’s British indie rock appears. It’s here cause of 1: recency bias - this album was 2004 and the first edition of the book was released in 2005! And 2: the main editor is British. This album *was* in fact removed in later editions of the book
The The
2/5
I don't like this one that much, which is funny, cause I really like every song on Soul Mining by The The (also on this list)
The Velvet Underground
4/5
I really like the track order. The songs flow together really nicely. I have known the closing track After Hours for some time, and quite like it
The Mothers Of Invention
4/5
I love stuff on the list that is different and not plain
Sebadoh
3/5
I liked how there were unexpected parts
Snoop Dogg
3/5
"Snoop Double G" is fun to say. Snoopy-snoop snoop dogg. Snoopy dogg o' double G G doggy dogg. Snoopy doggy dogg o' snoop dogg dogg
David Bowie
3/5
David Bowie's 3rd highest rated album on rateyourmusic.com. And he has a lot of albums! Blackstar (2016) is 2nd highest. So excluding Blackstar which is an outlier (makes sense why it's so high though), it becomes his 2nd highest rated. Wow! After one listen I don't appreciate why it is so acclaimed. It definitely requires more listens from me to see why

Iron Maiden

A very solid album. The one thing I especially like about Iron Maiden is the very prominent bass. Such as in their album Powerslave. I am excited for their self-titled debut also on the list later - I quite like that album
That said, there is a very distinct lack of extreme metal on the list... the metal that is on here is generally quite tame. I think the list should be much more diverse, and push people's boundaries of what they can handle a lot more. Many albums on here are widely critically acclaimed, but nothing that is TOO different. The few albums that are quite different aren't rated that highly, so this 1001 challenge DOES do a good job of appealing to the masses... in that sense. I think rather than "1001 albums to listen to before you die" this is "1001 albums to get educated with popular western music". At this point, I find myself doing the challenge for the latter. I like the challenge for that though! It is a great source to discover and go through lots of stuff
Nevertheless, I am happy when any sort of metal comes up. And Iron Maiden is always happily welcomed. My favourite track may be the title track, or the closing track
