A response to a top comment Part 1: "I can't believe this needs to be said, but "this isn't on Spotify" isn't remotely a legitimate criticism of an album" I agree Part 2: "Spotify is a cancer on music (even more so than the rest of the industry) and is for soccer moms and other "I like to have something on in the background" casuals. If you have such limited resources that your only place to listen to music is Spotify and YouTube ("o noes, there are ads, whatever will I do!??"), that's your problem" I disagree with Spotify being for "background" music "casuals". I think it is one of the greatest tools for easily discovering lots of music. For me, I have been able to discover and listen to so much with Spotify. Without it, the barrier to entry to my level of listening would be very very high. Before Spotify, the kinds of people who would have used Spotify as background music would then tend to just listen to pre-selected radio. Spotify gives "music listening superusers" so much more of an ability to explore. I think it is very easy to hate on Spotify and be closed-minded to all that it has opened up. There are issues of course, specifically for artists, yet I think saying Spotify has caused people to use it as background music is quite dismissive. In fact, I would argue more people customize and explore their music now than in the time of radio

No, I'm not being pretentious. People gotta stop accusing others of being pretentious for rating something highly that they don't understand. Different people see things differently. Who cares how others rate things And you know, I do really like stuff that sounds different. It is much more interesting than all the bland stuff out there
I've listened through this album a lot. For some time, I would listen through this album every day more often than not. So good!!! I especially like Orion. In the middle it really feels like a nebula. The title track is a classic and goes really hard. I also really really love Battery Edit Nov 4 2025: I think my favourite track is Orion now Edit Mar 17 2026: edit from 5 --> 4. I find it more "pop-y", and I don't really like that. For example, I don't like Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
In a way, I didn’t want to enjoy this album. But I did, and in a way, that makes me kinda sad
The 1001 albums journey has made me appreciate this stuff. I like that about the challenge - getting to appreciate stuff you wouldn't have

Needs more electric guitar solos with lots of distortion (Hahaha just kidding I actually really liked it) Edit on Jan 20 2026: changing from a 4 to a 5. I really like this one now, and have been regularly spinning it
"Give a little biiiit, give a little bit of your looove to meeee" Okayyy fiiine, wrong album, but anyways this album is great stuff. And so catchy: "RIGHT, RIGHT, YOU'RE BLOODY WELL RIGHT". I love the use of piano on this album. The entire instrumental of the closing track goes so hard. Also they album cover is super cool. Somebody cooked here. Really I just love space-themed album covers in general. If you (the one reading this) ever make an album for the 1001 albums list, if you want to give me a good first impression, make it a space-themed cover :)
Sabrina Carpenter levels of horny
HIT ME ~~HARD~~ SOFT AND SOFT (It didn't hit me that hard) Edit: changing to a 3 on Oct 5 2025, I like jazz a bit more now
I really wanna rate it higher but it’s hard to justify. I wanna rate it 3/5 but would probably need more listens first... I like certain other Talking Heads stuff a lot, just not this album. Take Me to the River is cool though it gets a pass
The Cure at their darkest. No longer the angst of Seventeen Seconds or the dull and grey depression of Faith - this album is angry. With very little use of hi-hat and cymbals, the drums feel tribal and drive the relentless gloom. One of my favourite aspects of this album is the cohesiveness. Of all the albums I know, this is the only one where I feel all tracks equally belong. Nothing feels out of place, and yet each track is quite unique - truly a masterpiece of an album. As for album covers, this isn't usually The Cure's strength, especially post-Wish (except Songs Of A Lost World, that cover is great and deserves a longer explanation). Anyhow, Pornography's cover is superb and really catches the despair. It is worth noting that Damnation A.D. did a metal cover of the album, complete with their own great remix of the cover. Further comments on each track: 1 - One Hundred Years Doesn't waste any time by opening with "It doesn't matter if we all die". Second only to Plainsong in terms of Cure album openers. 2 - A Short Term Effect "With teeth of madness jump, jump, ..." is so satisfying. 3 - The Hanging Garden The best drums on the album. The "fall, fall, fall, fall" and "as the animals die" parts are so good. 4 - Siamese Twins "I chose an eternity of this" - wow, great opening. Like many Cure songs, the lyrics aren't explicitly clear, but the presumed theme of 2 people in a (not healthy) relationship is done very well. 5 - The Figurehead A dirty song ("I can never be clean again"). "I laughed in the mirror for the first time in a year" also hits really hard here. Supposedly has shared themes of love from Siamese Twins. 6 - A Strange Day Gives a strong sense of not belonging - feeling disconnected from the real world and drowning. It is as if there is a fog covering the senses. "Move slowly through the drowning waves". 7 - Cold The organ is done so well. Continues from A Strange Day with a sense of drowning, but now frozen and can no longer move. 8 - Pornography In a twist of events, this is actually the most positive track, ending with "I must fight this sickness, find a cure. I must fight this sickness". The distorted vocals really push confusion and desperation for the first half (lyrics don't come in until 3:15 halfway through, there's no rush on this track). The distorted vocals come back at the end to round off the track nicely. I have to say, I really enjoy the sudden positive glimmer of hope at the end of the closing track. It is one of my favourite parts of the album.
Calming. I like how the title uses the NATO phonetic alphabet. I really gotta learn the full alphabet...
"Orchustic" is indeed a good way to describe it like the Wikipedia text mentions. I dig it.
"Pitchfork ranked it as the 13th best album of the 1980s." Really?? 13th best of the 1980s??? That's actually so cap. Like the album isn't *bad* but CMON... how much were they paid to say that lmao The people at Pitchfork have probably only ever listened to 13 albums from the 1980s. Let me list 14 1980s albums. Apparently Pitchfork says this album is better than at least 1 of these: - Appetite for Destruction by Guns N' Roses - Disintegration by The Cure - Master of Puppets by Metallica - Hysteria by Def Leppard - Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi - The Joshua Tree by U2 - Power, Corruption & Lies by New Order - Full Moon Fever by Tom Petty - Thriller by Michael Jackson - Remain in Light by Talking Heads - Closer by Joy Division - Purple Rain by Prince - Reign in Blood by Slayer - Psychocandy by The Jesus and Mary Chain - Graceland by Paul Simon - Back in Black by AC/DC - Born in the U.S.A. by Bruce Springsteen - Violent Femmes by Violent Femmes - The Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden - Bleach by Nirvana OOPS I... accidently... listed 20 huge albums from the 1980s cause there's so many better albums than this one!!! Ok this review is just a dis on Pitchfork at this point lol Edit Apr 15 2026: 3 --> 2. I don't find it that memorable
Ehh I'm not that big on jazz Edit: changing to a 4 on Oct 5 2025, I like jazz a bit more now
I love Everybody Hurts so much Edit Apr 22 2026: 4 --> 3
When I first heard it I put a 4 with comment “Good Stuff”, but I’ve been returning to this album and it’s really grown on me. I really really like it now
I vibe with it
Solid vibe
Closing track ("Tell Him") goes really hard, and "Nothing Even Matters" too. I Knew "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" before, great too. Also I like the discussions separate from the songs, a nice touch Still, this rap album isn't as much my thing. There *is* certain rap I really like though, like Speakerboxxx/The Love Below by OutKast (it also has discussions separate from songs, which are done very well there)
Track 11: "Do You Think It's Alright?". Spoiler for the next track: it was not alright 💀 Quite the unique story album Edit Apr 22 2026: 4 --> 3
Liked it more than I thought I would. Pleasantly surprised. Nice and relaxing Edit Mar 23 2026: 3 --> 2. I don't like the vocals that much
I recognized the popular song
A vibe for sure
The lyrics really aren't that deep... like REALLY cmon... makes me think chat gpt existed back then The only thing I sorta liked was the electric guitar in Black Cat... but ehh the guitar felt muted
6 stars if I could. A masterpiece. The sound and lyrics are really well done. You know it's a great album when someone did a thesis on it: https://digitalscholarship.unlv.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=5322&context=thesesdissertations 1 - Mr. Self Destruct My favourite song on the album after Hurt. I love the intense bursts of sound soooo much. That is, the sound that plays when saying the lyrics during the 4 lines leading up to and including the "Mr. Self Destruct" line. 2 - Piggy Sets up the album well: "Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore" 3 - Heresy My favourite chorus on the album. Also, the raw drum sound is amazing. The synth that is there from the start is great too 4 - March Of The Pigs I love the increase in energy here. The "Now doesn't it make you feel better?" is a nice surprising change of tone for a second 5 - Closer Has the most streams cause of frat parties I bet, but Hurt is still the most well known song from this album (Johnny Cash made sure of that). Still very good song. I like the electronic sounding beat in the background. Also the fast synth after "You get me closer to God" is greatttt 6 - Ruiner The synth at 0:49 is so satisfying. It feels very grand 7 - The Becoming Pretty dark 8 - I Do Not Want This Nice change up with the piano 9 - Big Man With A Gun Nice intensity 10 - A Warm Place A bit of a break after the previous track 11 - Eraser I dig the hum-sounding sound 12 - Reptile Good set up for the title track 13 - The Downward Spiral Well-deserving of being the title track 14 - Hurt SUCH A GOOD SONG. My favourite off the album and by NIN even. Honestly, a favourite song of mine in general
Eh another jazz Edit: changing from a 2 to a 3 on Oct 5 2025, I like jazz a bit more now
Me when Congratulations wasn't a PewDiePie cover: 😔
+1 for use of guitar No One Said It Would Be Easy has a great riff
Not bad
Actually great stuff. Stay With Me is such a good song
I liked it more than the other Paul Simon album so far. I think it's the synths. Makes me excited to get Graceland, so I ended up listening to that one for the first time today too hahaha Edit Apr 2 2026: 4 --> 3
Title track goes hard Edit Apr 2 2026: 4 --> 3
Honestly wasn't bad, there's just better stuff for my tastes out there
The definitive shoegaze album - such a unique sound
I love a Rolling Stones sample Edit Apr 15 2026: 4 --> 2. I don't like this super pop stuff that much. I still do like a Rolling Stones sample / lyric usage
Most streamed song is cool
I love a good glam metal guitar tone
First three songs are super good. Can't rate it 5 though as much as I like it and have listened to it in the past
I like the catchy keyboards Edit Mar 17 2026: 3 --> 1. I really don't like the vocals
Title track is fun
It’s ok The top 10 songs are quite different, mostly ambient noise haha. How do you get >100 million Spotify streams of an ambient song lol. It does go hard though. But I’m just rating the album anyhow, not the artist’s top 10 tracks
Funky
I love the sound of the opening track
I LOVE IT. I've listened to this album quite a bit in the past. Disorder goes so hard it’s unreal. Actually unreal. It’s one of those albums you either “get” if you’re in the right mindset, or else it doesn’t appeal as much. Peter Hook is my favourite bass player along with Simon Gallup from The Cure There’s a reason this album was used as the cover to one of the versions of the 1001 Albums To Listen To Before You Die book. And it’s not just because the album cover is so cool (even though it *is* a really cool cover)
Revelation (the longer closing track) reminded me of Going Home by The Rolling Stones
Imagine if Iggy Pop got a low taper fade
Below I attempt to self-reflect on what drives me away from modern pop. I list various interesting thought points for me, not in any specific order: 1. Production I think one of my issues with modern pop is that I find the very good production techniques fake sounding. As if there's less "soul". However, this is still a very very good pop album. She is a very talented singer, and I find pop in general has *very* good production. But alas, I am basing my ratings more off of my personal preference. 2. Priority of Vocals Also I find I really like the intrumental part of a song when deciding if I like it. That doesn't mean I don't like vocals - I do like songs having lyrics - I just put a lot of emphasis on the instrumental part. When I think of songs I really like, and why I like them, I generally think of the intrumental part. Especially since I like a lot of guitar-driven music, I think of the guitar/bass riffs. This album, however, really places the emphasis on the singer's vocals and lyrics. I feel like a lot of modern pop can be like this, which is probably a reason I get turned away from it. Of course, MANY pop songs do have their intrumental parts at the front with lots of emphasis! This is just a reflection on certain characteristics of certain modern pop I don't like. I'm also not saying these songs ignore their intrumental parts. And the intrumental parts are very well done for the songs - especially on this album - and are just what the song needs. It's just not what I personally like. 3. Music Exposure When Younger Another thing really worth considering is what music I was exposed to when young. People have found after all that in general (many people will be exceptions!), people consider the popular music when they were growing up to be their musical preference. Of course, this doesn't apply to many people!! It is no secret my current music preferences come from my parents. A lot of what they like is what I like now. 80's alternative rock, really. So, I did get exposed to this a lot. However, I *was* actually exposed to a lot of modern pop as a kid too, especially in now-nostalgic situations. For example, when I was at daycare, whenever we would go play outside (every day), the radio would always be put on to the current top hit songs. So, I got exposed to a lot of 2010's pop and such there. Thus, I do associate 2010's pop with a lot of nostalgia. However, I still never really enjoyed 2010's pop at the level I enjoy rock.
Opening track is great. Also I swear everyone has a cover of Let the Good Times Roll (the more covers of it the better!)
She is a very good singer. Lowest female voice type so unique Edit Mar 17 2026: 3 --> 1. I like jazz much more now, but not these pop vocals
Has lots of soul. I dig it Memories Can't Wait cover by Living Colour is great. Was very surprised to see the original version here, cause I didn't know Living Colour was doing a cover
I vibe with it. End of the Night was great
I like hard rock. I like when they noodle around like on Picture of Home and Never Before. Nice to hear the origin album of Smoke on the Water. Would be sick if Smoke on the Water had the distortion turned way up and lots of palm muted E string chugs. You know what, I'm gonna look for some metal covers. Still a great track Intro of Lazy is really cool Edit Feb 26 2026: 4 --> 3. I find it generally plain. I also gave ZZ Top Tres Hombres a 2 today Edit Mar 3 2026: 3 --> 2. Yeah I find this quite plain and I don't dig the lyrics
The cover reminds me of a Calculus textbook
The album has important themes. I really like the tale and song combo Edit Mar 17 2026: 3 --> 1. I don't like those vocals
I vibe with it, I like the use of keyboards. In general I just find the album a bit boring for whatever reason. I'm not a super big fan of the singing voice Also... cmon: "Makes you want to feel like a teenager Until you remember the feelings of A real-life emotional teenager Then you think again" Ehhhhh 💀💀
Looking at the album cover was the most interesting part
The drum solo felt a bit short Edit Apr 15 2026: 2 --> 3. I like this sorta stuff more now
I recognized Corona, that was a great track!! I realized it’s cause it got well known as the theme song for the Jackass TV show. In general the album is ok but nothing crazy to me
“ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR!” My 2nd most streamed album of all time and my 2nd favourite band of all time!!! I remember when I first heard this album, I felt like a lot of the songs all sounded the same. And near the end I was like “this is going on for a while, how soon until it’s done?”. But I really liked the raw guitar sound and still listened to the album more and it really grew on me. Now, all the songs are very different and it’s easy to tell which is which just from the opening guitar chords, when before it sounded quite similar The nice thing about liking this album is that the Ramone’s first four albums all have the same sound and are all S tier, so tons of good content. This is their debut album and I would consider it their best though I also gotta give major credit to Johnny Ramone as the guitar player. Their songs are mostly all exclusively barre chords, which takes a lot of strength to play for an entire concert setlist. Also the Ramones famously played their songs faster live, so playing barre chords with fast down picking the entire team isn’t easy Fun side comment: this is the album I associate with making Strava map arts, cause I first listened to it then And here’s some comments about each track: 1 - Blitzkreig Bop My favourite Ramones song. Just perfect. Also super fun to play 2 - Beat on the Beat I remember when I first heard this track when first listening through the album, I was like “huh this sounds quite similar to Blitzkreig Bop”, but now I really enjoy it and love that about the Ramones 3 - Judy is a Punk My 2nd favourite track on the album. This one is just SOOOOO fun to sing along out loud. I love the “second verse, same as the first” and “third verse, different from the first” so much. Also “And oh, I don't know why / Oh, I don't know why / Perhaps they'll die, oh yeah” is so satisfying 4 - I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend A nice slower pace song. I really like this one too 5 - Chain Saw I love the bridge of this one 6 - Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue 😼 7 - I Don’t Wanna Go Down To The Basement The song lyrics say “basement” but I swear I only ever hear “base" 8 - Loudmouth Very simple lyrics but I love it. See I don’t always need complex lyrics! 9 - Havana Affair “I used to make a livin' man pickin' the banana!!!” 10 - Listen to My Heart I love the “next time!”s 11 - 53rd & 3rd My favourite lyric to say from the album: "53RD AND 3RD!!!!!!" 12 - Let's Dance I love this one. I especially like the other "dance" Ramones song - "Do You Wanna Dance?" on Rocket To Russia 13 - I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You Simple lyrics like a lot of their stuff but goes hard 14 - Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World Works great as a closing track. Especially the ending of this track
I felt like the "Get on with it" scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Vibed with it so much I decided to listen to the bonus tracks too. It helped that I was locking in coding at the time, so it fit the atmosphere well. Truthfully though I gotta give it a 2
Perfect for today. The album's described as "sunny" and it was a great warm sunny day today. Good vibes for a good vibes day. Hit the spot Also: “The song "Say It Ain't So" appeared on US President George W. Bush's iPod in 2005.” - weird flex but ok. Jokes aside that's neat little trivia, I dig it 😃👍
James Bond theme covers are always welcomed
Someethinggg innn the wayyyy, hmmmmm mmmm
Some solid stuff here Edit Apr 15 2026: 4 --> 3. I like the 80s sound, just not the pop-y-ness as much
I can't unhear this 💀💀: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQ0iTDafXuM
I've listened through this album a lot. For some time, I would listen through this album every day more often than not. So good!!! I especially like Orion. In the middle it really feels like a nebula. The title track is a classic and goes really hard. I also really really love Battery Edit Nov 4 2025: I think my favourite track is Orion now Edit Mar 17 2026: edit from 5 --> 4. I find it more "pop-y", and I don't really like that. For example, I don't like Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Bro really gave us a mission statement in track 2 like he launching a startup 💀💀 Anyways, Body Count (happily!) surprised me. The riff goes hard. I looked up Body Count and turns out it *IS* a real rock band fronted by Ice-T. Huh! That's pretty neattt
Got kinda bored Sprawl II is cool, and Empty Room intro
Gotta represent the friends of the motherland. I feel this music in my blood SCOTLANDDDDD FOREVERRRRRRR!!!!!
Where are all the guitar solos and distorted power chords??? Palm-muted low E string chugs???? Anyways, it's the Beatles!! I liked recognizing the famous riff from Johnny B. Good in Roll Over Beethoven
The bass is really good here. The first track sounded shoegazey which I liked Edit Apr 15 2026: 4 --> 3
Not my sound. I like the outro though - how it says "this LP"
Gotta love Blondie. Great proto-80's
It's cool. 2nd track is my favourite
Some cool stuff
Psycho Killer is amazing. The rest is ok
Every track is gold. Just What I Needed is one of my all-time favourite songs
I had never listened to Spiritualized before I knew my mum asked me to check if Spiritualized is on the list when starting the project, so the artist was on my radar. When this album came up, my mum told me to tell my dad too, and I played the 1st track to have him guess it. Whenever I see my mum/dad, I get them to guess all the albums I’ve generated since last seeing them, but my mum said I should call him that day. He got it instantly - at the 1st note (I played the 1st track for him starting *after* the first lyric, since that line says the name of the album/track). He then said that this album was very special to him and he must have listened to it around a thousand times (whatever the actual number, it is a lot). A bunch of the music I like comes from my parents, so this made me excited to listen to this album. It also had the shoegaze tag, and I really like shoegaze. I wanted to properly focus on this album when first listening, so I waited until I had a chunk of free time. I then turned off the lights in my room, turned off my phone notifications, and I lay down in bed and put the album on I cried a minute in. This really is something special
+1 for what the Rolling Stones Exile On Main Street reference symbolizes here Edit Apr 15 2026: 4 --> 2. I don't like the indie voice that much
Truly great. Criticizing repeated lyrics here is like criticizing rock music for having riffs. It's the style, it works perfectly, and does exactly what it's supposed to do Edit Apr 15 2026: 5 --> 4. I have a lot of nostalgia for it, but I don't feel it enough for a 5/5 here
I like Blowin' in the Wind. The rest would need more time to grow on me Edit Apr 15 2026: 2 --> 3
Maybe if I pay attention to the story more it would get a 3
It's ok
With the addition of kids it boosts it to a 4 Edit Apr 15 2026: 4 --> 3
Good if want that vibe
The cover art is amazing. Very good song covers too. This is the country music gateway drug for me Edit Apr 27 2026: 5 --> 4
Excited going into this, since the album cover is used as the cover art to one of the versions of the 1001 albums book... I love myself a Rolling Stones cover!!! The rest could be better
I really like the light on the album cover. It looks very peaceful
The metal theme is cool. I respect this stuff. I was really digging the bass, and then found out it was Jah Wobble playing - that explains it!! Unfortunately I have to rate this album a 2, even when they have other great stuff. My mum even had a PIL shirt when younger!
Where are the drop D power chords?? I dig it anyways 😊 Very calming. This gets me in the mood for a David Attenborough documentary
I dig the sound quite a bit here. I didn't read the lyrics much... but the ones I did read were kinda eh. Voice is also kinda eh. I would love an instrumental of this album. Yeah. The more I think about it... an instrumental would be sick
It’s ok. Like yesterday an instrumental would be nice
Hey chatgpt generate me an 80’s album Edit Apr 15 2026: 3 --> 2
Good happy background music that is calming
Beatles from temu
I got Spacemen 3 vibes from I'm Comin' Down and that made me happy. I am really looking forward to the Spacemen 3 album
Nice vibe. Last song sounds fun to sing hehe
I am separating art from artist in my rating cause he’s a nazi and if I didn’t it would be a 1. I can appreciate how it was groundbreaking but it still isn’t as much my thing
I like how guitar is a bit more at the front. Grunge-y Edit Apr 15 2026: 3 --> 2
My mum plays the top track off of each album for me to guess each day. When I first heard the top track (the title track), I thought it sounded like modern pop! I was quite surprised to learn it was from 1977
I saw somebody say Eruption should have been the opener and I AGREE SO MUCH. Would have been soooo good. I really love albums with instrumental openers... Slayer's Repentless, Testament's The Formation of Damnation, The Cure's Seventeen Seconds... and the instrumental opener on 1984 by Van Halen is probably my favourite track on that album The guitar tone here is also SO GOOD. Like OMGGGG the You Really Got Me intro RAHHHHH. So crunchy but also... it sounds wet?? If that makes sense??? I like that combo a lot
VIOLENT FEMMES OHHHH YEAHHHHH I've been listening to this album a lot recently, since it's becoming summertime and it's a great summer album 1 - Blister In The Sun Amazing opener!!! I love the part when it gets quiet and stays like that for a while. My step mum would say in clubs back in the day, everyone would get low during the quiet part. And since it’s so long, it would always be funny staying low that long WAIIITING for it to become louder again. I would love to experience that one day - ha! 2 - Kiss Off “YOU CAN ALL JUST KISS OFF INTO THE AIR!!!!” I love the part where it counts to ten, and how “I forget what eight is for” hehehe 3 - Please Do Not Go This one is super fun to sing. The chorus rahhhh I love it. I like the “she like another guy” whine and “she never, see, the tears I cryyyy” 4 - Add It Up Iconic intro. “Dayyyyyyy, after dayyyyy”. I also like when the instruments briefly go quiet for “But I look at your pants and I need a kiss”. One of my favourite parts to sing loudly is the “WAIT A MINUTE HONEY I’M GONNA ADD IT UP!!!!” 5 - Confessions Switching up the vibe now. A nice break in the energy. My favourite part is the closing line “And you see I’ve learned my lessons. And I don’t even want to hear about your confessions” 6 - Prove My Love Another very singable one. Welll they are all very singable - ha! I associate this one with Please Do Not Go 7 - Promise "This is only a guess". I like that part 8 - To The Kill I find this one similar to Promise in the sense that this one says "to the kill" while Promise says "This is only a guess" as closing lines 9 - Gone Daddy Gone The xylophone is great here!!! 10 - Good Feeling This is SUCH A GOOD CLOSING TRACK. This is why I don't listen to bonus tracks when listening through entire albums. This is where it should end. Has such that "ending" and "closure" feeling. I really like this track
I love all the screaming and yelling. Really, I do! It adds such energy. Makes it feel extra special
Voice reminds me of the The The singer. Calming and wise man feeling. I like that
Nice non-electric stuff Edit Apr 3 2026: 2 --> 3. After really loving Pink Moon by Nick Drake, I am bumping this up
Nothing that REALLY stood out to me on first listen
Yup this is 80s
Cmon, it’s The Clash I like I'm so Bored with the USA it should have more streams
I have learned from this undertaking that the older 90's rap is actually ok with me. Stuff like Wu-Tang Clan and such. Never thought I would think this, huh!
I do like 80's sound in general but there isn't anything crazy crazy special on 1st listen. I would need more listens to appreciate certain songs. I liked recognizing the Beatle-ness of the Lennon-McCartney song (last track)
Solid Edit Feb 26 2026: 4 --> 3. I find it generally plain. I also gave ZZ Top Tres Hombres a 2 today
Didn't know they made Kashmir, ha! I didn't even know that song had that name
I really like this album. I love the meaning of the song Message In A Bottle. All the tracks are great and unique Edit Apr 22 2026: 5 --> 4
Good instrumental stuff. The vocals from part 2 starting halfway through surprised me
Paul Simon locked tf in
Nothing stood out that much
Damn I really got Wonderwall rickrolled at the start of the opening track Edit Apr 15 2026: 4 --> 3
Ok honestly the instrumental part is pretty cool
I like how they have a consistent red-white-black album cover theme
I love Neil Young: https://www.vulture.com/article/neil-young-ticketmaster-robert-smith.html Him + Robert Smith try not to be based challenge (impossible) And this gets a 4 purely because of the album itself Edit Apr 15 2026: 4 --> 3
Ok acoustic stuff
THE rebound album Really put an 11 min song at the end 💀💀
A strong 3
That R.E.M. guy needs better taste in music
Nice if wanting this vibe. For me it’s ok
Calmer background music. I like the use of synths Edit Apr 15 2026: 4 --> 3
Three Little Birds is quite a nice one
Relaxing
I actually like the guy’s voice Edit Apr 15 2026: 4 --> 3
No way his fingers aren't frozen in the album cover
It's Joni Mitchell. Can't not like Joni Mitchell
Watch The Great Escape if you haven’t. Steve McQueen has a great motorcycle scene in it
I like the funky base on the 2nd last track Edit Apr 15 2026: 4 --> 3
Nothing super crazy
Franz Ferdinand is known for their top hit, but they have a lot of other great stuff too
More of a background music for me
I like the album cover
I thought it was pretty cool actually
Very creative and groundbreaking for their time
This album is REALLY good. My most-streamed Rolling Stones album. Rocks Off is such a good opener. I love the trumpet part in the chorus. Shine A Light is also a personal favourite of mine. Such a well-made album
Cool for certain vibes but not as much my thing
Was cool background music
Of course, Bohemian Rhapsody is a masterpiece
Arabian Knights has a really great bass tone. Monitor gives me Everlong vibes which is neat
Some cool use of guitars. I especially like The Chain Edit Mar 17 2026: edit 5 --> 4. I find it too pop-y for me
I found it kinda boring. For me, that is one of the worst things for an album. I did like the increasing pitch at the end of the 2nd last track (Animal Lover) though If music is very extreme like Kollaps’ album, I actually enjoy that cause it is something different and pushes the boundaries. Something unique to “listen to before you die”. Kinda like how love and hate are not true opposites. An opposite of love/hate would be boredom
Under the Bridge is a classic but the less-streamed songs weren't too crazy
The intro to Once in a Lifetime sounds so unique and aquatic
It's a nice performance. Well done. Not something I enjoy as much Edit: changing to a 3 on Oct 5 2025, I like jazz a bit more now
Title track intro (first 4 minutes) was a vibe Edit on Jan 20 2026: changing from a 3 to a 5. This really is great WOW
It is a nice calmer vibe
Do they REALLY need 3 albums on the list?
I really like her voice
Very groundbreaking. There is some great stuff on here. I am especially fond of Foxey Lady, since I’ve listened to The Cure’s cover of the song on Three Imaginary Boys a lot
I had heard of the name Dead Kennedys before but had never heard any of their stuff. I listened to the top song and was digging the punk sounds. And saw it was 80s. So I was like oooo this seems cool. So then I sat down and full-screened Spotify on my laptop. And brought up the lyrics. And then listened to the entire album while reading through the lyrics and doing noting else. AND OMGGGGG IT IS SOOOOOO GOOOOD. LIKE HOW HAVE I NEVER HEARD OF THIS BEFORE INSTANT 5/5 I LOVE IT SO MUCH
In a way, I didn’t want to enjoy this album. But I did, and in a way, that makes me kinda sad
Eh, I’m not *that* big of a fan. I feel like there wasn’t anything crazy interesting or different done I will say: Don’t Give Up IS quite a nice positive song. I like the "Don't give up [cause you have friends / you're not the only one]" lines especially. Also, I liked how there were those guitar strum bursts on Big Time
The opening track made me think of the tune from the "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" song
The lore of Vienna becoming popular only more recently is pretty neat
HOW DOES IT FEEL HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE ON YOUR OWN WITH NO DIRECTION HOME
The history around the album is neat
Yeah, quite laid back. I like that about them
OH MYY, MYYY THIS HERE ANAKIN GUY MAYBE VADER SOMEDAY LATER, NOW HE'S JUST A SMALL FRY HE LEFT HIS HOME AND KISSED HIS MOMMY GOODBYE SAYING "SOON I'M GONNA BE A JEDI" "SOON I'M GONNA BE A JEDI" Title track is cool, really because I have a soft spot for it cause of the Weird Al cover. The rest was ok to me
I liked how it was more guitar-centric than other stuff
Got major Beastie Boys vibes, and it turns out that after a quick search: Run-D.M.C. DID influence them! In fact, Run-D.M.C. helped create Paul Revere on Licensed to Ill. Neat!! I also really like how they alternate saying things. It is done very well here
I like how relaxing it is. The vocal sound fits well with the instrumental sound Edit Apr 15 2026: 4 --> 3
Quoting exactly how I feel: "considering the fact that this came out in 1968 i would say they were ahead of the curve in terms of weird noise music. didn’t know what to expect really going into this but i wasn’t disappointed tbh. maybe a hot take but i actually liked this, not exactly the type of music you’d put on for a chill vibe while studying but i take loud and weird over boring and forgettable any day"
Very deserving of the name Funkadelic FRIED ICE CREAM IS A REALITY I liked the cult-like repeating of "Fried ice cream is a reality!". That was fun I can just feel the vibes of how this is a great and historic album
A very cool combo Edit Mar 27 2026: 5 --> 4. I will say that I do really like at 3:01 in Battery when James says "Are you alive? How does it feel to be alive?"
The prominent bass is very nice here. I very much enjoy when bass isn't buried in the mix
A part in Dazed and Confused reminded me of the intro to Paranoid A very solid album
I LOVE THE CULT SO MUCH They don’t get nearly enough praise overall. And on this site, this album gets hated on way too much. Thankfully, me and the other 8 Electric enjoyers on this site will give it 5 stars The solo on Aphrodisiac Jacket will always be top tier. The first solo I went about learning on guitar
A really fun live album. I really liked everyone's enthusiasm
She is a good singer, that's for sure. I've never really liked R&B stuff that much though
Top comment was a fun read Such a vibe when cooking so squeezes out the 4 Agree about Quality Seconds
Earlier in the album I was thinking of a 2. But I stayed open, cause maybe I would like the later album tracks. And then OMG yeah the closing track is top tier 😭😭 Gets a 3 for overall, but damn that last track was much above a 3
The opening track The Changeling reminds of Funky Town
That was a fun listen. I like the crowd's enthusiasm
You already know it’s gotta be a 5. My favourite Sabbath album Edit Apr 22 2026: 5 --> 4
The production is immaculate
I had never listened to Prince before, so was good for me to check this out. I wasn’t that interested though. Metaphors in the closing tracks were a neat part
I don't really like The Beta Band. Found some info online about why they have TWO albums on the list My findings: their main influencial stuff is a compilation album, and thus uneligible for the list. And they aren't in the newer versions of the 1001 albums list anyways. See the following found online: "I looked up the band after getting Hot Shots II to see what was so special about them to merit an inclusion, and apparently they were pretty influential in their approach of blending electronic with rock and were an influence on Radiohead's more experimental stuff in the 00s. The problem is that their influential stuff appears to be a series of EPs they made at the end of the 90s and was later compiled into a compilation album, which means that album probably would have been both a better representation as to why this band was special, and would have used one less slot in the book. Or maybe I'm wrong and you just had to be there, I don't know." And: "Both albums did feature in the 2005 edition, then Hot Shots II was removed for the 2008 edition, and by the 2011 edition both albums were gone. So it went from two to one to zero. "
This turned out to be really good. Very atmospheric. And in 1974. Wow! Edit Mar 17 2026: edit 5 --> 4. It is more of a 4 for me
Suzanne is a good track Edit Apr 10 2026: 3 --> 4. I am growing to quite like Leonard Cohen
Was cool to hear the big songs, cause I didn’t know they were from this artist or album Edit Apr 5 2026: 3 --> 2. I'm just not that fond of this album
I like the bass on this one
Some catchy parts, and also some more eh parts. The catchy parts I really vibed with. Repetition is used well here
I liked the track Horses In My Dreams here. And the end of the closing track
I like the title track quite a bit. The rest didn't stand out to me as much
I liked "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" and "Free Form Guitar"
Very pleasant for a morning sunrise drive
Grandbag's Funeral riff was a little bit of something... but not really Damn like this stuff isn't THAT crazy or different. I am surprised they got as big as they did.
It didn't click with me that much. Neat to listen to for the piece of history at least
About the cover of Just Like Heaven by The Cure: THIS IS HOW COVERS SHOULD BE DONE. It is building off of the original by adding new elements, instead of being a simple copy. For example, there is the guitar wobble on the main riff, and the yelling of "YOU!". Also, the abrupt cut off after the first "YOU!" at the end of the song. Unique! I like that! I really love bands who excell at doing great covers that build on the original. For example, Siouxsie and the Banshees. Their Dear Prudence with the layered vocals saying "Deeeaarrr Prudenceee" is top tier. Also, their cover of Helter Skelter is very neat in how it starts off slow instead of fast live the original Edit Apr 22 2026: 5 --> 4
Top tier Edit Apr 15 2026: 5 --> 4. I feel I need to give it more listens to appreciate it more
There's something I like about music where I don't know what they are saying (well, the French I know hehe). It feels nice to break away from all the English stuff And anybody who covers Imagine is cool in my books. I really love that song
Quite calming. Shoegaze-like. I like the closing track Take Care 🥹
The 1001 albums journey has made me appreciate this stuff. I like that about the challenge - getting to appreciate stuff you wouldn't have
Gary Numan my beloved Edit Apr 15 2026: 5 --> 4. It hasn't stuck with me that much since I got it. Maybe I just need to listen to it again
I liked Sail Away and Old Man. I like his voice - it matches the songs well
There’s something beautiful about this, that I can’t quite put my finger on
Neil Young is cool. I like the opening track
No, I'm not being pretentious. People gotta stop accusing others of being pretentious for rating something highly that they don't understand. Different people see things differently. Who cares how others rate things And you know, I do really like stuff that sounds different. It is much more interesting than all the bland stuff out there
I didn't connect with it that much. I really like Wu-Tang, so was sorta hoping it would be more like that (with them being from the same wave and all)
I like the guy's voice
And as a surprise to no one, the 1001 albums general editor is British
I like this kinda 50's stuff
I find the album overall pretty bland and uninteresting. Yeah it’s got the big track but the rest of the album isn’t strong enough to hold up
I didn’t vibe with this album that much
First song is such a vibe
I’m not a big soul guy
That was nice for a change
Or you could just make a punk album, that would be a sick genre switch
It wasn't really my thing. Good for me to experience it nonetheless, given all the praise by critics
It was good for me to listen to this for the historical and educational component. Wasn't the kind of thing I enjoy assss much though
The album cover is sorta neat. I didn't connect with the music that much Edit Apr 15 2026: 2 --> 3. I like jazz more now
PLEASE CAN WE REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF BRITISH ROCK THAT I *DO NOT* NEED TO LISTEN TO BEFORE I DIE
If some other guy sang this instead... would it still be on the list...
I thought it could of had 5 potential. Maybe if I listened to it more
I quite liked the covers. Overall nice album for a change
One CANNOT play this loud enough I love dancing around my room to this while blasting it on the headphones
This is one of my favourite albums of all time. And that’s saying a lot. I absolutely adore it. I LOOOOOOOOVE the sound, I just can't get enough. The feedback on the guitars really sounds soooo good to me I also really like the lyrics
Again, I just didn't connect with it that much Edit Apr 2 2026: 2 --> 3. I do like jazz more now
The track I've Had It was neat. The rest: not so much
That was nice and peaceful
Some solid stuff there
Don't worry sweetness I was only joking
It was ok
I I I I I'M GONNA I'M GONNA KICK EM OUT KICK OUT THE JAMS!!! Edit Mar 27 2026: 5 --> 4. I haven't played this album *as* much. Maybe if I play it more in the future I will bump it up more
The guitar burts on Love Is A Hurtin' Thing reminded me of Worried About You on Tattoo You by The Rolling Stones
Interesting in that sounded quite different at times. Wasn't that fun though
The list needs more weird and different stuff
The highest rated jazz album of all time on Rate Your Music (https://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/album/all-time/g:jazz/) Solid
I like "Keep On Chooglin'". That's fun to say. Chooglin. Chooglin chooglin chooglin. Chooglin!
I liked the closing track, and how it was named such as being a closing track
Such a good Rolling Stones album. My favourite one is Some Girls, and this is second. Or third after Tattoo You
I didn’t know Magic Bus was one of their bigger songs
I found it quite boring and safe
Rikki don’t looose that numberrr Edit Apr 2 2026: 4 --> 3
I really like Galapogos, guitar tones used, and of course: 1979 The voice and some lyrics I do find annoying
I really like Wasted Time + Reprise, Try and Love Again, and The Last Resort
This was very interesting. I like things in the list that are interesting
The slower atmosphere was very nice I could tell that the track Roygbiv would be a more popular track as soon as it started (in fact, it is the most streamed song by the artist). It reminds me a lot of the song All I Need by Radiohead Aquarius with the counting that suddenly stopped counting in order, and the kids laughing and "yeahhh, that's right" was such a vibe I also liked the message of the spoken word of the closing track (track 17 - note that track 18 is a bonus track)
A bit too pop-y for me to get the 5. I quite like it though. Especially Dancing in the Dark
Solid but overrated
I thoroughly enjoyed this one. So many great tracks! I especially liked these on my first listen: Who Are The Brain Police?, Go Cry On Somebody Else's Shoulder, Motherly Love, How Could I Be Such A Fool, Wowie Zowie, Any Way The Wind Blows, You're Probably Wondering Why I'm Here, Help, I'm A Rock (great one!!!), The Return Of The Son Of Monster Magnet (the cream cheese song) That's a lot of tracks! Edit Mar 27 2026: 5 --> 4. I haven't played this album *as* much. Maybe if I play it more in the future I will bump it up more
Nothing stood out to me that much. Though, there is: "They call him Ragtime Willie" - Rockin' Chair
I really liked this one. Didn't expect that! The skit at the end of Warning with them both realizing they have red dots on their head is funny > Oh, shit > What? What's wrong? > What's that red dot on your head, man? > What red dot? > Oh, shit! You got a red dot on your head, too > Oh, shit!
Icky. Such as in the track Girl Let Me Touch You
This album has such a vibe. I especially loved Irganda
I tend to not really like R&B stuff that much. I do like albums with skits and that feel like a connected album though. Like mentioning the “Killing me softly with his song” lyric on other tracks that weren’t that one. Also the “add a motherfucker so you listen” line does indeed go hard
I liked the instrumental side of it. I didn’t like some of the lyrics in the earlier tracks
I like the positivity
I didn't find it that interesting. I liked the organ-like synth on Bad Religion
Early grunge, neat. I liked the guitar tone
SLAAAYEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One of my favourite albums of ALL time
I liked it a bit better than Get Behind Me Satan. We're Going To Be Friends reminds me of The Beatles
I really like her voice. And the closing track Get It While You Can. A nice message there
I liked the "don't care" attitude YEAH I, HIT HIM BACK WITH MY, PET, RRRRAT
I was vibing, but I didn’t like it assss much as other 90’s rap
I generally don’t like britpop *that* much. This one didn’t really do it for me. Quite generic, not very interesting. Yeah Bitter Sweet Symphony has a nice instrumental
Nice and fun. I liked the track (3 Is) The Magic Number. I also really like how these 90's rap albums tend to have all these intermission tracks, which I love in albums. Also, I like the game show storyline
I liked listening to it for the historical context. I didn’t get as much out of it. I do like how it is one of the earlier “DIY” approach albums. I like on the 2nd track where he made the beatboxing type sounds
I was quite surprised by the instant synthy sounds on the 1st track. Doing some shredding at the end of I Don’t Mind If You Forget Me was also quite unexpected
Elvis Costello generally doesn’t really do it for me. I found it a little plain
Liked it better than I thought I would. What’d I Say reminded me of some song… not sure which…
The bass tone gave me PIL/Jah Wobble vibes (I like that). I really like how if you dive into thinking about the bass, it is quite prominent. It is there, waiting for you to focus on it
I really like the first Black Sabbath album. This one I don’t feel as strongly about. Part of it is the pop-y-ness. For example, I don’t like Iron Man. I find that one very boring
Solid stuff here. Very 80's in a great way that I love. The pop-y-ness is what prevents it from getting higher from me
This was a very fun album. Quite diverse - all over the place! In Tracy Jacks, I love how the first guitar strum isn't synced between the left and right speakers. There is a slight delay. That really caught me off guard when listening through the album. I instantly rewinded to hear that again!
That was fun! I like the guitar tone. I also like when albums have instrumental opener tracks The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke gave me vibes of that one Star Wars instrumental for a bit hehe
I wasn’t that big a fan of the more acoustic tracks
It annoys me when 2000’s British indie rock appears. It’s here cause of 1: recency bias - this album was 2004 and the first edition of the book was released in 2005! And 2: the main editor is British. This album *was* in fact removed in later editions of the book
I don't like this one that much, which is funny, cause I really like every song on Soul Mining by The The (also on this list)
I really like the track order. The songs flow together really nicely. I have known the closing track After Hours for some time, and quite like it
I love stuff on the list that is different and not plain Edit Apr 2 2026: 4 --> 3
I liked how there were unexpected parts
"Snoop Double G" is fun to say. Snoopy-snoop snoop dogg. Snoopy dogg o' double G G doggy dogg. Snoopy doggy dogg o' snoop dogg dogg
David Bowie's 3rd highest rated album on rateyourmusic.com. And he has a lot of albums! Blackstar (2016) is 2nd highest. So excluding Blackstar which is an outlier (makes sense why it's so high though), it becomes his 2nd highest rated. Wow! After one listen I don't appreciate why it is so acclaimed. It definitely requires more listens from me to see why
Nice guitars
Soooo many great tracks here. Iconic Edit Apr 15 2026: 5 --> 4
I like the whimsical songs Edit Apr 16 2026: 4 --> 5. I have really been loving this one
Too plain and pop-y for me
Building lego around Christmas time to this would go SOOOO hard
I don't feel as connected to the 2000s indie rock bands
A very solid album. The one thing I especially like about Iron Maiden is the very prominent bass. Such as in their album Powerslave. I am excited for their self-titled debut also on the list later - I quite like that album That said, there is a very distinct lack of extreme metal on the list... the metal that is on here is generally quite tame. I think the list should be much more diverse, and push people's boundaries of what they can handle a lot more. Many albums on here are widely critically acclaimed, but nothing that is TOO different. The few albums that are quite different aren't rated that highly, so this 1001 challenge DOES do a good job of appealing to the masses... in that sense. I think rather than "1001 albums to listen to before you die" this is "1001 albums to get educated with popular western music". At this point, I find myself doing the challenge for the latter. I like the challenge for that though! It is a great source to discover and go through lots of stuff Nevertheless, I am happy when any sort of metal comes up. And Iron Maiden is always happily welcomed. My favourite track may be the title track, or the closing track Edit Apr 22 2026: 5 --> 4. I like other metal better
BOOYAH Edit Mar 27 2026: 5 --> 4. I haven't played this album *as* much. Maybe if I play it more in the future I will bump it up more
I wasn't that interested
I found it pretty plain and uninteresting
Recognizing Ibrahim Ferrer from Buena Vista Social Club was pretty neat. I was like... that sounds familiar! The rest of the album I didn't dig that much. The intrumental side of Starshine interested me a bit
I very much enjoyed this one
Some solid background music
PEAK PEAK PEAK Fave track is Suffragette City "Hoo haa!" "AhhhhhhhHHHH WHAM BAM THANK YA MA'AM!!!" Edit Apr 15 2026: 5 --> 4
Gave me Beatles vibes... I love The Beatles, but wasn't that into this one
If I ever need this specific vibe, this is the perfect album for that. Good to have up my sleeve
I enjoyed it more than I thought it would. Wouldn't you know - the generator keeps throwing jazz-y stuff at me and it keeps growing on me Edit Mar 17 2026: 3 --> 1. I like jazz much more now, but not these pop vocals
There’s better Talk Talk stuff out there, alas I do quite enjoy the ending of the closing track
I found it sorta plain. I liked the intrumental side of the closing track
At the start I was like this is good cooking music. I can see the jazz influences in art rock. 2nd track was a vibe for chopping. Then 3rd track sounded spy-movie-like. AND THEN 4th was kinda freaky (like horror movie freaky). And 5th happier. 6th some jazz. Miles Davis *did* write that track, so makes sense. Never know what to expect on this album now… Track 7 now, “In A Moment Of Clarity”, and wow I realized I like jazz now. Wow good job 1001 albums list
I love the voice so much Jet must have sounded so heavy back then Edit Apr 2 2026: 4 --> 3
Quite ominous. Especially track 4: Washer. Done very well. I really love the use of spoken word
I like the atmosphere, like in the last track Monster Love
Riff of first track goes hard. And the “how I wish you were here” line
I was wanting it to be heavier throughout the album
I absolutely love the wave album cover
I do quite like Hong Kong Garden. The rest I don't really vibe with as much as I think I would. Generally I find I really like singles from Siouxsie And The Banshees... but albums not as much. Interesting
Ohhh yeahhhh babbyyyy. Sweet sweet guitar tone
I did not vibe with it. I ain't liking the soul stuff
That was neat. I like the 80s sounds. It sorta surprised me as I haven't listened to that much OMD
Wow I didn't know they were that early huh. 1969
Not super interesting.. I sort of dig the 80’s sound here but also find it sorta plain. I’m a bit split
RAHHHHHHHH HARDCORE PUNK
I ABSOLUTELY adore Walk on the Wild Side by Lou Reed, so I really like hearing the sample in Can I Kick It?
I honestly thought it would be more interesting… it was just very… mid… and plain…
I vibe with this different stuff. I don’t like the term “world” music, but alas I do find myself more likely to like the non-US/UK/Western albums
I don’t like modern indie that much. I DID like the closing track though. What is it with me and liking opening and closing tracks…
I used to like this album more, but now I find it a bit too pop-y for me. This Town is nice
I like how the songs change around during each song. I dig the energy. I'm not sure how I feel about the production
The most bland 80’s British pop album to every bland 80’s British pop
Why is this lowkey peak. Someone commented "The music that plays when you get kicked out of a cantina." and that is TOTALLY the 2nd track HA. For the 3rd track it was giving Animal Crossing and I love it. I also love the title track, and The Mountain
It’s quite beneficial for the list to have many albums from certain artists. Yeah, people complain a lot about it, but I think it would be worse if every artist was limited to one or two albums. Having many albums from one artist gets you lots of repeated exposure, cause sometimes it takes longer for something to grow on you. It can force you to discover things you otherwise wouldn’t have
Still not that big on modern indie. Nevertheless, it was good to finally listen to Elliot Smith to see what all the fuss is about
Too much soul for me
I like the lyrics of Coat of Many Colors
ts did NOT need to be on the list 🥀🥀
Truly goated album BILLLLLLYYYYY SHEARRRSSS
I don't like the vocals. And I found the guitar more generic and not too interesting Edit Apr 2 2026: 2 --> 3. It has grown on me. I keep repeating to myself: YOU SHOULD LEARN HOW TO SAY NO
So, I got all 3 Nick Drake albums now. That's all of his albums too, since he committed suicide. May he rest in peace It's funny, I got his albums in chronological order, and my rating of each album kept increasing every time. I first gave Five Leaves Left a 2, then Bryter Layter a 3, and now Pink Moon a 4. I will have to revisit the earlier albums of his I now understand why he is so highly rated. This album is #36 of all time on rateyourmusic.com! Edit Mar 28 2026: 4 --> 5. This is the same day I listened to it. It made me cry immediately after I finished my 2nd listen. Check my camera roll to remember. And a very good-to-have call after. Funny (and good) timing on the call
While researching about the album I learned about the Native Tongues movement. It has artists like De La Soul (who is featured on this album - and I got their debut already), A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, and others. Started in the late 80s, it is Afrocentric and positive stuff. Neat to learn about
Never could stand that dog
I have listened to this album a lot over time. I really love it. I actually prefer the UK version cause I really like Out of Time. The 11-minute Going Home is done very well. I like when Mick Jagger settles on a new phrase to keep repeating - ha! Edit Apr 2 2026: 5 --> 4. I still really like just like I did. Idk if it qualifies to be with the other 5/5s though
Fave track is m.A.A.d. city cause of the synths and drum beat. I quite liked the experience of learning about and discovering this album. I have heard it mentioned many times. As for the actual content, I didn’t enjoy it *that* much
Not super crazy, but not super bad
This album gets heavy rotation around Christmas time. Fave parts are: - When the tempo picks up when the singing starts in Sleigh Ride - The spoken word thanks of the closing track
I like Speakerboxxx/The Love Below quite a bit more
My least favourite of Metallica’s first 5 albums because of the popyness. I don’t like how it’s slower tempo and I don’t like the vocals as much. Nevertheless great to have something heavier as that isn’t that common with the list. I quite like the opening to Sad But True
Liked the riffs and sound better than Tres Hombres
That was really damn good. Great voice here too
That was really good. Great atmosphere. I really liked the instrumentals. Sound and Vision I have loved for a while
I really like the production on this one. Great songs too. I love his voice
Should have been Cowboys From Hell, but this has the great Pantera guitar tone too. Love that
It didn’t move me thaaat much. I could tell when the most streamed song came on that it was something that stood out more for radio..
I liked this one more than I thought I would. I liked the "have fun" attitude
I don't like the lyrics and popyness that much
Nice change from all the US and UK type stuff. More Africa and other region representation is needed!
SUCH A VIBE Watermelon Man is giving tropical jungle energy Edit Mar 27 2026: 5 --> 4. I haven't played this album *as* much. Maybe if I play it more in the future I will bump it up more
That was pretty neat
No explanation needed
When I first heard this album a while back I was a Radiohead hater. After listening to a larger variety of albums from this challenge, I appreciate the difference of the album now. Well I'll be I really liked the opening track, much more than I remember Edit Mar 27 2026: 4 —> wow it has really grown on me. I never thought I would have a Radiohead album at a 5
I love Miles Davis now Edit Mar 27 2026: 5 --> 4. I haven't played this album *as* much. Maybe if I play it more in the future I will bump it up more
I like OK Computer quite a bit better
Not very interesting... very corporate... made to sell above anything else...
I like the cover of California Sun and that’s where I know these guys from. I like how they add their own words for “and I <activity>”. The Ramones’ cover of California Sun is much better though!
Gave it a fair chance. Didn't really like it. I never really have liked this stuff. Even hearing this kinda stuff a lot in elementary and on the radio back then... nope I never felt a special connection to it. Maybe I would have gotten into music sooner if I liked the popular stuff more
I liked the synths and the vibe
I keep seeing this album cover pop up everywhere, and has high ratings on music rating sites. Was curious to see what was up. I didn't know the Ramones' I Don't Wanna Grow Up was a cover from this album. I can see why music critics and people on RYM, AOTY like this. This is giving Time Out Of Mind by Bob Dylan, except this came out 5 years earlier
I like the base in the opening track quite a lot. And the closing track in general. Those are the only parts that stood out to me. I don't like any of the vocals in this album, except for the closing track. The closing track is saving this album for me
I like the sing-talking. Spacemen 3 does a lot of that, and I really like them
So Rod Stewart was in Faces. Huh! I like the song It's All Over Now here
Clocks isn't bad but I don't vibe with the album that much
At first I was thinking a 2, but then upgraded to a 3 once I was vibing with track #3. And then I was really digging the last track and upgraded to a 4
Very peak. The sound is soooo good
This was a fun listen cause it was INTERESTING and DIFFERENT and stood out among everything else
Pretty... unremarkable. Feels like watered-down grunge
I think one of his more experimental albums would have been a more interesting pick. This was very plain, and I don’t like his voice anyways, so maybe there was no saving it…
Ok but why was it lowkey good tho Edit Mar 22 2026: 4 --> 5. I have been listening to it quite a lot. Fave track is Feelin' The Same Way
When people say they like alternative rock, I find they either lean more towards the 80s or 2000s. As for the 90s, there are parts of the 90s that lean either to the 80s or 2000s. And me, well, I lean towards the 80s. And this here is that 2000s alternative rock. You know, I swear every new rock band is alternative rock nowadays. It makes sense though... as the other big umbrella would be the more "classic" rock which isn't the thing anymore. Now it's all indie-alternative rock. If only rock today was more analog and less "perfect"/overproduced. Well, I can still listen to the more analog stuff, so it doesn't really matter, does it And this, this is 2000s alternative rock
Did this REALLY need to be on the list…
VERY good list pick. Different from the plethora of Western content, AND I love the parts explaining the music. A gold standard for what many more albums on the list should be
I absolutely despise the vocals. I absolutely despise D.A.N.C.E. If the entire album was like that it would be a 1 for sure. The only thing saving it are the purely intrumental parts that have that nice distortion
SO boring. Some of the most uninteresting, safe, and generic music there is
I... surprisingly enjoyed that much more than I thought I would. Huh. I felt good listening to that. Made me feel more present
Weird but interesting. That's good. And it's much more unique then a lot of other stuff on the list. I liked the variety in this album
I really like Iggy's stuff with The Stooges, but don't like this direction he then took that much. I feel like, in a way, I want to like it more. But alas
My favourite part of the album was the album cover
The length didn't bother me. I'm just not a Deep Purple guy
I found it annoying at times. Wasn't a fan of the vocals at parts, and also the parts with cleaner production
I liked the A Tribe Called Quest album with the Lou Reed sample better
I was gonna put a 2 cause I guess I was still in my hater era but this can break the streak and get a 3 Also what's with all the songs about named people
I had a very magical experience at the same time as I was listening to this. The addition of the music was… wow
Note that the song Sex Dwarf is "to make a comment on the bizarreness of tabloid exploitation". Tabloids are smaller newspapers that do a lot of gossip. The song title came from the title of a one of the newspapers: "Sex Dwarf Lures Disco-Dollies to a Life of Vice" I especially like the synths on Sex Dwarf and Chips on my Shoulder I also really like the album cover
Boring and forgettable. It was way too safe for me
If there was a bit more song variety I feel it would get the 4
When I first heard this album I wasn’t super blown away (compared to how much I love Loveless). I gave it another listen and I still love Loveless a lot more
"Another result of Dimery's obsession with showcasing the UK at any cost" So real!!!! Why can't there be more traditional music from all the various cultures around the world.. instead of UK indie rock #208. I am really starting to despire all this UK indie rock, when there are so many other types of music this could go to. Trust me, I do NOT need to listen to this!
I actually guessed it was Minor Threat within a few seconds, before the vocals, even though I had never heard anything on this EP before! Ha! I *have* heard other EPs of theirs a couple times (only a couple times though). I thought it was pretty neat I guessed it was them! A neat thing to note about Minor Threat is that they coined the term "straight edge", which is the subculture of hardcore punk where you don't have alcohol, do drugs, among other things As for this EP: Hell yeah, more hardcore punk. The lyrics were interesting to read
Yeahhhh boyyyy BASS HOW LOW CAN YOU GO DEATH ROW? WHAT A BROTHER KNOW Also, Slayer sample, hell yeah ANGELLLLLL OF DEATHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Better than I expected honestly Take it eeeeeeasssyy
I just didn't find it that interesting. It didn't stand out that much. "Ranked No. 98 on the 2020 revision of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time". Really?? I don't get it
That was very nice. Exactly what I needed right then. Having a relaxing lunch after a nice sunny walk/hike. I especially like the 4th track Salminanam
When I first started the 1001 album I got this in my first couple weeks. It fit the vibe of where I was at the beach, and I gave it a 3/5. I gave it another listen now and I find it quite plain and not very interesting
I didn't know Nobody's Fault by Testament was a cover from here. Huh. That was confusing cause I knew I heard Nobody's Fault before when listening to this, but couldn't remember where. At first I was thinking Guns N' Roses, as it sounds like something they would do From the Wikipedia article of Nobody's Fault: > "Nobody's Fault" is often cited as one of the heaviest songs Aerosmith has ever recorded, and many musicians regard it highly. Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash and James Hetfield of Metallica both consider it one of their favorite Aerosmith songs. Additionally, Kurt Cobain mentioned the song as a favorite in his journal. It IS a very solid song. The rest of the album.. didn't connect with me that much. It is their highest-rated album on rate your music, and many tier lists online place this album at the top of Aerosmith's stuff. I guess there is some goodness hidden in there that I don't know about yet. I was able to see the goodness of Nobody's Fauly since I like it from Testament's cover
Frank Sinatra: a serial cheater and divorced his wife cause he didn't want his wife to work (he wanted her to quit her lead role in a film, and she didn't want to). Gotta separate the art from artist here
Huh, so this is the (not very good) father of Jeff Buckley That album cover looks pretty depressing
There was some ok stuff in there... but nothing REALLY caught me
I liked all the record scratching
I am growing to quite like Leonard Cohen. It's my new wave of liking acoustic stuff from artists like Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen. I am even considering making Nick Drake's Pink Moon album one of my 8 5/5 albums on rate your music. It's THAT good
S tier discography
I like the guitar tone of Celebrity Skin at the start... but then the vocals are very upfront in the mix and I don't like that. I would like it much better if the vocals were more burried and the guitar was much more at the front. That is a big issue of mine with modern production. I wasn't too interested in the rest..
I don't like this stuff
I am a Beta Band hater. Both Beta Band albums on the list were removed from later editions of the book. It's like they were only added at the start because they needed some 2000s albums that just came out. And then it was realized they really didn't need to be on the list
Too pop-y for me to be higher
PEAK PEAK PEAK My Last Words is the best one here for that outro
I don’t like the term “world” music but man do I tend to like it more in the generator I like the descending synth sounds that sound like Pac-Man dying
When I saw them live, Mick Jagger put on an amazing performance for an extended edition of Midnight Rambler. It really made me appreciate the song more. He was going all into it
I like the mamase mamasa mamacoosa of the first song Wasn't a huge fan overall
I respect making glam in 2003. I didn't like it that much for whatever reason. I liked the opening guitar part before the vocals. Also the tapping at the opening to the bonus track Makin' Out
It should have been In the Flat Field
You know... you're not supposed to listen to the 2 hours with all the bonus tracks. Just listen to the original release 1. Click the Wikipedia link 2. Click "Track listing" on the sidebar link 3. Listen to the "Original edition". No need for bonus tracks!
It didn't do much for me. It's just... so... plain. Yeah I know what the title track is about and I read its lyrics
"Here comes the pain!" I've never really liked the popy side of Wait and Bleed
At first, I was thinking how the slip-something-in-your-drink description is accurate. Then I read more about the album, and discovered how it's a concept album about an 18th century Venetian guy called Giacomo Casanova. And how it’s a bunch of critique of the slimy behaviour Songs of Love has a nice swing to it. I like Theme from Casanova. Site node: National Express (not on this album) is a fun song Originally at the start before learning more, I was thinking a lower rating… like a 2/5... But damn I didn't expect the shift away from the recurring theme at the end with The Dogs & the Horses. Was unexpected and sad and good. And the theme makes sense now with the concept album-ness. Surprising boost up. A memorable album The more energy I put into an album, the more I tend to like it or appreciate parts I wouldn't have. A more general thing to remember for life 4/5
WHEEEEERES YOURRR HEADDDD ATTTT (wrong album) Meh (this album) The synth distortion on the 2nd last track Don't Give Up was neat
Damn. Damn. Damn. Devastating. Damn.
I'm vibing. I've gotten to know Fela Kuti through the 1001 albums
An absolute masterpiece. My favourites are Plainsong and Untitled and Pictures of You and Disintegration (title track) and Closedown. The album as a whole is truly an experience. I have listened through this album many many times…
