Standouts:
Guilt
Working Class Hero
Why'd ya do it 😵💫
Why is it so experimental 🥹
First half was kinda bland and repetitive
I love the blend of harsh and soft guitar sounds on the later songs.
Probably a 3 but the 3 standout songs are carrying hard
Standouts:
5 years
Moonage Daydream
Rock'n'Roll Suicide (Too short!)
it's got a distinctly old sound, I wonder how it sounds on original vinyl
I'm a fan of how many instrument combinations there are already
Wait I've heard Starman before this is wild.
Everything was really unique and there was a lot of cool stuff going on I think I probably need to relisten to this to appreciate how good it is.
I think the whole album lacked a solid direction.
4/5 is my current opinion
Standouts:
- City, Country, City (nvm this has stopped standing out when is it going to end??) (it's still got 2 minutes I didn't know a burn down could be this long)
- The World is a Ghetto
I'm excited to see what long jazz songs are like
-----The Cisco Kid----
-----Where was you at----
It's been 2 songs and I feel like they were meant to start at some point but they ended instead
----City, Country, City----
This has a ton of texture so far
How long is this outro?
----Four Cornered Room----
This song is following the pattern of not starting
----The world is a Ghetto----
Title track is the first song to actually use it's length to good effect
----Beetles in the Bog----
One of my main complaints about the whole album is I can't remember a time when more than one instrument was playing at the same time.
This is probably great music to have on in the background but sitting in a coffee shop listening to this I found myself waiting for it to end.

Standouts
- Scenes from an Italian restaurant
- Vienna
- Always a Woman
Pre Thoughts:
I don't think I've listened to a soft rock album back to front
----Scenes from an Italian restaurant----
This album has hit it's stride with "Scenes from an Italian restaurant" and "Vienna" but I currently don't think it's anything I haven't heard before
----Only the good die young----
I always wonder if these albums were amazing at the time and then everything copied it so now it sounds bland
----Always a woman----
OH THIS SONG! Crazy how much this has stood the test of time.
----Everybody had a dream----
The last 1 minute felt really out of place not really sure what it was doing
Post thoughts:
I understand why this album is on the list, lots of classics on here and generally enjoyable but it's nothing special imo.
3-4? I'll probably round down unless brain says otherwise
Standouts:
- Butcher's Tale
This album suffered from one instrument at a time syndrome
Was I overall bored
2
Standouts:
Earthquake 😵💫
Desire Lines 😵💫
Basement Scene (?)
Helicopter
Not heard of this artist but nice to get some more modern music. I've always been interested in psychedelic music but not found a jumping in point
The textures and layering were amazing in the first song hoping that continues
About half way through and I'm generally enjoying it so far but the first song was so much better
Desire Lines brought back the fuzz I enjoyed from the first song
We're so back
Why'd the last song just cut off ?
Post thoughts:
The first song was stunning but then the songs until desire lines were not really for me
The 2nd half saved this album from being relegated to mid imo and had a really strong ending
low 4
Standouts:
If You Let Me Stay
Seven More Days
As Yet Untitled - A lyrics only track makes it rather memorable
I've realised I have no idea how to talk about this kind of music. I found myself enjoying this way more than I expected. The more atmospheric songs are the usual highlights but I feel like the whole album was incredibly solid. Terence's vocals are really evocative of the vibe each individual song is going for. The instrumentation is very 80s but I don't think that's a particularly bad thing and Terence's vocals make up for all that anyway.
I wanted to know what "The Hardline" was meant to refer to but couldn't find anything on the internet
I was also confused on the difference between the titles on streaming and on this site and it turns out Terence changed his name in 2001 which is cool
high 3 - low 4
Standouts:
Frankie's First Affair?
Sally
Pre thoughts
oh god... (negative). I'm really trying to go into this with an open mind
The first few songs are repetitive. Sade's voice is quite nice but didn't really do much different throughout the course of the album. I didn't hate listening to it but I found the whole experience a bit boring.
Was considering a 2 at the start but I might be nice and give it a 3
I feel like this was meant to be some form of relaxing album based on the title but I found myself stressed due to the constant rhythm changes. It sounds like a bunch of people who are competent at music decided to go off script and wasn't sure why everyone else wasn't following their lead
The last song wasn't bad, maybe they agreed to play a slower song and were able to piece something together
1-2
Not a very memorable album. The last song was the best but I generally found his voice granting and most songs suffered from too many solos.
The French word for immigrant tied with the African artist intrigued me so I tried to do some reading on this. This album was made while Youssou was passing through Paris. With references to missing home, not trusting local authorities and stress of responsibility. He later used his success from music to open Internet Cafe's in his home country. Awesome guy.
It's a really interesting taste of another culture of music. Youssou's voice is great and the instrumentation makes me feel warm and comfy. It's refreshing with how clear the drums are, I tend to find drums get mixed into the background in Western music.
You can hear hear the fuzz of the tape between songs which really brings home how handmade the album is.
I'll give this a 4 but I probably will never listen to it again. It's really cool tho
Standouts
- Until the end of the world
- The Fly
- Ultra Violet
This album is way more experimental than I was expecting from a U2 album, I actually ended up really enjoying it. It feels like a sonic youth album at times. There are some really generic songs in here which brings it down a lot.
low 4
Standouts:
u (ending)
Complextion
Mortal Man
This is some of the better lyrical flow(??) I've heard from hip-hop/rap. I find I can actually understand what they are saying rather than trying decipher a long syllable shoved into a fast beat.
Lyrics in general were very hit or miss. Some lyrics hit me quite hard (especially the end of u). I also felt some references went flying 10 feet over my head. Sometimes they were just talking about sex and I couldn't care less.
I kept on hearing "So I went runnin for answers" throughout the album which turns out to be part of the poem read at the end of Mortal Man. It's a neat way to tie an entire album together, makes it feel like even though he is clearly working through a lot of difficulty he won't stop until he finds what he's looking for? or maybe the time he finds an answer it leads to another question?
I found the album improved as it went on for me. I'm not sure why really. Just feel like it was easier to digest. More interesting topics and less jazz.
The little interview/conversation at the end was interesting. I did some digging and found it was fictional, I was hoping it was something like GY!BE does.
Standouts
- Outside Myself
- Constant Craving
I was initially worried by the country genre but it ended up being more contemporary which was a nice surprise
Generally enjoyable but nothing all that special
3
Standouts:
New boys
Great British Mistake
Insane album cover
I can't name you a single song but at the same time I was jamming to all of them. Great British Mistake was amazing and showed how much potential these guys have if they experimented more with their sound
Guilty Pleasure 4
standouts:
they played the same song 8 times...
B.B. King has a great voice and I generally enjoyed it but I found it all blended together. The crowd interactions being included was cool.
3
This was a slog to get through. I'm sure when this came out it was revolutionary in some way but now it just doesn't feel special and is incredibly boring.
15 songs that are less than 5 minutes just means none of them are memorable on first listen.
The singing is uninteresting and the heavy use of sampling is used to boring effect.
I was going to give it a 3 at the start but after an hour of listening it's going down to a 2.
Highlights
Family Tree
Red Dress
Love Dog
DLZ
I got excited seeing experimental rock in this artists genres but it turns out this was their less experimental album. Feel like it could have been so much more.
It did grow on me towards the end, the singer can have quite a big voice and the songs that lean into that with big instrumentation are really good.
3
Standouts
In The Flesh? 😵💫
Another Brick In The Wall Pt 2
Don't Leave Me Now
Hey You
Comfortably Numb
Waiting for the Worms
The Trial
I can hear how many albums this inspired and it still stands out amongst them.
I'm a bit delirious listening to this while ill, it's obviously a great album I can't get my thoughts straight on it. Referencing a wall in most or every song is fun but I'm not sure on the symbolism.
Every song was good, there just wasn't anything that completely blew me away.
I went back and listened to In the Flesh? and it clicked why there were 2 songs with the same name, cool storytelling
Very High 4
Fine I guess. It had some interesting parts but at the same time nothing stood out. It even had some noisy parts that I found off putting... and I'm a fan of noise. Just doesn't feel cohesive.
Heavy when it needs to be, quiet when it needs to be. Grooving all the way through, every song felt unique but they all belonged in the same album. No standouts but every song was great. It even had a few noise sections.
Easy 4
Nothing happened, kinda boring
Standouts
100 years
A Short Term Effect
The Hanging Garden
The Figurehead
Getting lost in this album was such an experience I decided to do it 3 times.
Everything has so much texture. Feels like an incredibly cohesive album. His voice sounds so hopeless I hope he's okay.
I much prefer this darker moodier sound than their more recent stuff.
The melodies twist and turn unexpectedly while keeping the same vibe.
It's so easy to get absorbed by this and watch an entire hour disappear
First 5
Yeh I didn't need to listen to this before I died. It was almost good at some point but it was mostly bad. I'm really not sure what it was going for but it was tiring to listen to. This is Ciśnienie if it was lame.
Yeh not much to say here. For some reason all the songs gave me christmas vibes. Probably something to do with a lot of tradition christmas songs being about the war.
It was fine. Nothing stood out but it wasn't bad
It was certainly unique but it suffered from everything blending together.
High 3
Initially I was bored, now I'm offended
I don't know what he's yapping about but I'd rather he stopped. I hate his voice.
The music isn't at all interesting or challenging so I'm doing my best to tune it out. Unfortunately this damn harmonica makes my ears hurt more than my bloody valentine live (I love mbv).
Is this meant to be a comedy sketch? The lyrics sound like he went to a pub found the most drunk person in the room and started writing down their drunken ramblings... Except that would probably be better.
It even ended with a fade out but at least it's over
1
It was fine, nothing stood out for me other than the creepy lyrics
I hate Christmas music but these are the best ones
This being a movie ost is strange, it didn't strike me as cinematic. I wonder what the movie is about. I enjoyed it more than I usually enjoy this type of music but it wasn't mind blowing or anything
We're finally here!
Standouts
Catholic Block
Stereo Sanctity
Pipeline/Kill
Tuff Gnarl ⭐
Pacific Coast Highway
Cotton Crown
Master-Dik
This is the album that usually gets credited with the first album to achieve the sound I adore. You know how cool live music sounds in a small venue? Yeh let's do that on a studio album!
This album has it all, crunchy guitars, noisy guitars, guitars grinding against your ears, fuzzy guitars, feedback...
Fun fact they couldn't get this album published because of the album cover for ages.
Some noise highlights:
Pipeline/Kill Time is a starts of simply but leads into this chaotic orchestra of guitar noises with a simple melody in the background to grab onto and guide you through. Incredible mixing so that melody is always there for you.
Tuff Gnarl has this one riff playing throughout it and then they start building up the noise and let the original riff free at the climax which explodes the section into perfection.
Master-Dik is a feedback ridden song which is the perfect way to end the album. The constant layered guitars in the back is a forest of sound to lose yourself in.
Incredible album easy 5
Unfortunately the later sonic youth albums are less harsh but at least they have the same vibe and goal.
This sounds like a boring movie
I found they would find a rhythm/riff and just play it over and over with no variation and it wouldn't even be an interesting riff.
I don't mind simple melodies like that but there needs to be something interesting happening on top of it to make it enjoyable for me
Every song experiments with a different sound and it feels fresh and interesting. The climax of every song was worth it and I'd get lost in the moment.
Standouts:
Paranoid Android
Exit Music (For a Film)
Let Down
Karma Police
Climbing Up the Walls
Lucky
The Tourist
Easy listening, well mixed, kinda boring.
Love the guitars on this. The vocals are lackluster mostly being speaking on the beat. Didn't have time to read through the lyrics but I wasn't super interested in them.
The guitars manage to push the sound of this record so far and every song felt fresh because of it. It's almost like the first few tracks give you the vibe and then the later tracks push it.
Low 4, carried by amazing guitar
Wasn't a massive fan, didn't feel like interesting happened and nothing stood out for me. It was enjoyable at least.
Nothing happening musically, maybe the lyrics are interesting but they weren't interesting enough to make me go check.
Easy listening, I understand why people enjoy this type of music.
I enjoyed it at the start and then I realised every song followed the same formula of "find a funky beat and then do nothing with it for 4 minutes" and it became a drag from there.
Making an entire album bragging about how much money you have is a gross concept.
Cute album but didn't manage to do anything to make me interested. At least it didn't have a blaring harmonica ruining my ears
Standouts:
Pretty Good
It's actually pretty good for country music. I'm not a fan of this sort of lyricism where they just kinda yap, but the instrumentation is good and varied from song to song.
I don't know if the 2nd half was worse than the first half or if I just got bored but my experience with this album declined...
High 2
Short and sweet; every moment is filled with instrument;, doesn't overstay it's welcome; the mix brings out each instrument's texture. Pretty much as good as this genre can get
Mostly boring and repetitive but The Murder Mystery saved the album from a 2
Standouts:
- What Goes On
- I'm Set Free
- The Murder Mystery
I barely remember this, the instrumentation was sometimes good but the vocals were bland and boring
High 2
I don't really enjoy music with minimal instrumentation and focus on vocals. especially when the vocalist isn't anything special. Only "I've Got to See You Again" caught my interest.
Standouts:
The Jungle Line
Harry's House / Centerpiece
I'm not sure what this album was going for. It was nice/easy listening but the Jungle Line was a super experimental track at I really appreciated but it felt like it was in the wrong album.
Joni's voice is really nice and she uses it to great effect with the instrumentation.
I appreciated the more unique choice of instruments but I wish they did more with them.
Mid 3
Every song seems to find a riff that it refuses to move from for the next 2 minutes. Some riffs are cool, some are 1 Chord over and over, every single riff get boring after 2 minutes.
This is like purgatory in album form
You Would Know actually experimented with their sound at the end rather having the guitars copy each other
I feel like the album starts getting better around half way through but I still feel like I'm going insane sometimes.
The ending of the last song was atrocious, it's like they listened to some experimental music and thought "Oh it's a bunch of random sounds I can do that"
High 2
Standouts:
China Girl
Mass Production
I feel like Iggy has 2 vocal styles in this album, more traditional 70/80's rock music grating voice and a more baritone style. I really enjoy his baritone voice, it feels like it's got so much depth and makes me feel warm. The most traditional voice stops this album from being rated higher
I enjoyed the varied instrumentation, lots of layers to dig into here and it was produced in a way that the instruments kind of blend together but still keep a certain separation. Big fan.
China Girl is a good example of how good his vocals could be, wish they were this consistent throughout the whole album.
High 3
