This album takes me back! Another form favourite from the past, but one that feels like a few weak songs on it and so don't listen to much anymore.

I like this album, I liked it 20 years ago. Some banging tunes and good memories. Not going to get full marks though, I must be hard to please.
Dear god, this is awful. It should be piled on the pyre of Prog Rock and all copies of this monstrosity should be destroyed as a gift to humanity. It's 38 minutes long and I'm half way through as I write this. Have mercy on my soul to finish.

Have loved this album since it can't out, it's superb, chilled and just wonderfully put together. By far the best album by Air.
Rap isn't my thing, and still isn't. At least this album didn't make my ears bleed in the same way as other rap albums and songs have. I can see how people might like this album, good luck to them.
What a warbler! Up and down and up again, gets irritating quickly. I love a good of The Cure, so hearing the superb song Lovesong being managed in such a diabolical manner was mildly infuriating.
I managed to avoid this album for 15 years and only took it on in the spirit on the 1001 album challenge, I'll never listen again. Dear god please spare me from more Adele during this challenge too.
Very much enjoyed this, and eventually got a new album recommendation from this site for an album I really liked. So much better than the pop and rap pish I've been subjected to. I'll send this album out again and see what else they have put there. My faith in the 1001 albums project has been restored.

Great to hear this again, always liked it but I think it's not quite stood the test of time, the songs didn't resonate as they once did. This is true of other Arcade Fire albums I've also listened too after a gap.

Very pleasantly surprised by this album, not just about love in an elevator. Good songs, energy and certainly not dull. Will be giving it additional listens.
Not nearly as psychedelic as I was expecting from the reviews I read. This is the kind of album I want to experience through this listening journey. It was just a lot of fun. I've no doubt this would be better known and much more popular if it wasn't for the fact they're Brazilian. Definitely be listening again.
Just a bit dull. This style is music was massively popular in the past, but it's just a bit old fashioned and very vanilla now. Well done Ray, nice singing, and the band was good. Just wake me up when you're packing up your instruments.

I was delighted to get a Smiths album today, I've dabbled with them before but not really got into their albums. I'd say I enjoyed it ok, but nothing wonderful. No huge sparks, it was just fine. Many people hated this album when I read the reviews, that's not me on this occasion. Not really sure how it leaves me with The Smiths now. Guess I'll find out once I get the next one. I'll probably not relisten here for some time.
Dull and pale. He tried to spice it up by injecting some good vibrations near the end, but the corpse of an album was long gone. Avoid this, nothing new, nothing special.
Good to hear this for historical purposes, it's good listening to a bit of 80's synth pop, but it wasn't stunning. The album ended with a couple of their hits, and that's where it'll remain. No need to listen to this again. Didn't hate it.

I particularly like how there is a variety in the music on the album. Delighted to find something new that I like - and the fact that it's a little bit different from my normal tunes.

An album that simply doesn't need to exist. Never needs replayed. Deserves to fade to nothing.
It doesn't feel like anything new or interesting, and it's far too long too. Would have been twice as good at half its length.
I quite like CCR, and always thought I should listen to them more. Didn't hate the album, but didn't really love it either. Definitely the CCR sound, but nothing massively new or interest to warrant a repeat listen.
Gutted to get a Hip-Hop album today. I really dislike the genre. Started with extremely low low expectations... But then... Oh.. that's not so bad. No nails down the blackboard that I was expecting. Actually mostly a pleasant listening experience.
It's actually a great hip hop album, flowed nicely and a good variety to it to keep in interesting.
Will I listen again? Mmmm.... No. I have too many other albums and music styles is prefer to listen to.
I enjoy a bit of The Doors with The Strange Days album. This one was ok, maybe it's a grower. Maybe it'll get a chance to do so. It certainly sounded like The Doors

It was just a monotone of sameness, and bland at that. Shouting and a fast BPM doesn't make it interesting.

Another album is mine that I have on rotation, but not too often.
Everyone should have a little bit of Tom Waits in their life, and this album is the perfect candidate. His albums can feel a bit grating at times though, and that's probably true here too, so I wouldn't listen to it too much.
Containing the perfect pop song according to John Peel, and it's difficult to argue. This album would still be an awesome listen even without that gem, it's full of energy and enough variety to keep it interesting and fresh. Superb disk.
I do like a huge chunk of Nick Cave's work, he's a unique man, absolutely fascinating who produces many of the best songs around.
I've dabbled with his early incarnation before, why wouldn't I? I'm search of more NC gems. I've come to the same conclusion as before, angry young man finding his way. It's a raw sound for sure, and it seems to be an important stepping stone to his later greatness. It's a stepping stone I'll leap over in the future.
The album is pure Bob Dylan, it's the Bob Dylan sound for sure. It's not a bad sound, I like a bit of Dylan. There are even a few good Dylan songs on it.
Looking at the full list I see there are seven Dylan albums to with through. They'll all be great, but why so many from the same artist?
The album was nice enough but I didn't like it as much as the albums I've listened to many times before. It's probably due to not being familiar with these tracks, but it'll get a lower rating for it.

Terrible. He can't sing, can't rap, the musicians aren't anything special, the compositions are dull, words are just plain irritating.
Maybe a bit hard on the musicians there, but when the vocals kick in it just does not work. Not one little bit.
Iggy Pop!
Another one that I hadn't really heard before, it's brilliant hearing more if these albums and Iggy didn't disappoint.
I listened and it faded into the background, I wasn't fully conscious of it going on. Felt a bit middle of the road
I've never really listened to Black Sabbath before and was very pleasantly surprised by this album. Decent songs including the famous Paranoid. I listened again on the same day any it was great second time round too. It's great to find these gems.
This is superb. Loved the energy and tunes. They know how to play properly as a band and the album feels like a proper performance. One to keep playing for the future
This felt like lounge music, poor lounge music. Just no bite or interest in any of their tunes, even with the well known pair of songs on here or wasn't elevated to anything beyond "meh".
Sparing it from one star because at least it wasn't turgid.
Nothing special, I really don't understand why it on this list. The cover songs don't make it any better, they just demonstrate how bland and middle of the road the experience was.
Nice chirpy album that steps along nicely. Interesting songs and enough difference to keep it interesting. Definitely one for repeat listens and a need to explore the artist.
Very much enjoyed the unashamed 80's throw back. Very much of its genre and I think very much holds its own in today's musical world. Definitely a keeper on the playlist
Really enjoyed this. I like the White Stripes but I've not listened to them much. Hopefully that'll continue as I can tick off more if their albums and not just listen to Elephant!
You can have too much Van Morrison in your life. In fact it's quite easy to hit that limit.
I'll be fair to say I agree it's an album for the 1001 list, but I just don't like it, and I haven't liked them over the past 30 years where I've tried to see what the fuss is about. I'll leave it for others, thank you.
I've been listening to this since it was released. Not necessarily a top album choice during that time, but it's consistently near the top and always a pleasure to listen to it.
It definitely feels like a comfortable blanket of sound, beautiful sounds beautifully put together.
I really have tried to listen to, and to like, The Who over the past years. I appreciate a few their hits like Baba O'Riley, Pinball Wizard and Wont Get Fooled Again. But when I go beyond these, even to My Generation, I just find them to be a bit crap. So clearly albums are a problem in general but Live albums where the singing is also rather dubious are just plain rubbish. And this live album had none of my favourite Who His (probably not written by 1970) plus the singing was rather dubious. Beyond the 1001 albums I'll not be playing The Who again.
Historically interesting for sure. Kraftwerk have a rightful place in music history, but this music is not for me
I read that "great songwriters" such as Elvis Costello get specially attention in the 1001 list, which means I've got another 5 albums to wade through.
By all means add one or two for Elvis' cultural impact... Bux six. C'mon. There are at least four slots here that should be given to something more deserving.
There were some elements of the album I liked, some of the sound and vibe. But. Once he opened his mouth the whole thing just fell apart for me. I just can't get behind rap. Just can't. I endeavoured through the full album but it's not a good sign to start counting down tracks till it's completed. 4 tracks counted down each one about 3 minutes in length... Then I got to the final (double) track coming in at 8.5 minutes. I could have cried into me steering wheel. EIGHT FRICKING MINUTES. Dear god, never again.
Dear god. I do try. I try to keep an open mind in the spirit of the 1001 albums. I'm just getting tired of rap. It's not for me and even though it only lasted 39 minutes I was counting down the seconds. This album has no redeeming features despite me looking for them.
Maybe the first dance album I've listened to due to the 1001 list. Another genre I really don't like. I always thought my music taste was eclectic, but I'm starting to doubt myself. Sure it was a good dance album but bloody hell, it was a DANCE album. 😞

Middle of the road album that I have to question as to why it even exists. It was just plain and dull, at least it wasn't bad.
I've tried to like U2, given them plenty of ear time. They do have some superb tunes, and that means their greatest hits disks are pretty good. But then getting onto studio albums I find I just don't enjoy them, they lack depth of quality and I just don't enjoy them. This is no different.
Ms. Jackson couldn't save this. Please don't find me rap albums to listen to.
Had never listened to a Neil Young album before now, it really was rather good. Decent tunes and the singing was fine. It had variety in sound between songs so was kept interesting. I'll listen to it again sometime, although I see I'll get plenty of opportunity to hear further Neil Young before the end of the 1001, hope it doesn't cause me to get fed up with his work
Not really for me, nice enough. I've always enjoyed Hotel California as a song. Just don't need Hotel California as an album.
I was looking forward to this album but it disappointed me a bit. I've listen to it before without it clicking, and it's the same again now. Sadly there wasn't anything special about it.
An old favourite of mine. Just a marvellous album which comes with a myriad of memories. I'll never stop loving listening to this masterpiece.

Some nice tracks on this, I really liked it. It's made me realise how important it is to have variety on an album, without variety the album can feel dull. Give this 4 stars, perhaps with repeat listens it could gain 5, but so difficult to get 5 on a first listen.
Noticeable difference in quality of their hits versus album filters, their album fillers are still great though

I've heard some shit in my time but this is top of the league. There is no need for this at all, and certainly no need for it to last for almost an hour. Sadistic.
Lots of great snippets, I enjoy the shoegazing vibe from the album. But, the snippets are too long, very repetitive, and when I realised this was a double album I just didn't have the ability to listen to disc 2 there and then.

Yes. Great album. Somehow I'd completely missed Janis Joplin as an artist, was only vaguely aware of her existence, but what a voice! Combined with a superb band it's another disk fully deserving of its place here.
I love a bit of Nick Cave, and love many of his albums. Maybe not quite this one though. This is a bit more filler than normal. However, Nick's fillers would be other's killers
That Lou Reed sound in sub standard variation of Transformer. I had to listen twice to make sure but just not excited by it... A real shame because I LOVE Transformer.
Nobody can deny Elvis' place on the 1001 list, bit it doesn't mean I have to like it. It's clearly of its time and feels very dated now. It's a shame, but that's just how it is.
AC/DC get accused of having the same sound for all their songs, perhaps a little unfair... Only a little. You mostly know what you're getting and their big classic albums are a step above their average. If you want a superb classic album, you got it. I can listen to this anyday of the week, and it's not even my favourite AC/DC album

The one single ray of light was Ricky's Theme, genuinely excellent. Note that it's an instrumental and has a chill vibe to it, and I couldn't help think it sounded like a Morcheeba track.
However, I'm rating the whole album, and this single track does not excuse the travesty is the other tracks.
Arcade Fire is a great band, loved many of their albums and have been to see them live. They were always a band for playing 10-20 years ago. But. They've not had the longevity I was expecting. They just fell off my play list, and weren't missed, with only occasional plays in the past decade.
The Suburbs would have been a definite 5 star during the popular phase, but now it's just going to get a 4. While I enjoyed the replay, it's satisfied me for the next while
Surprised to find two very familiar tunes in this album courtesy of REM and Elastica. Two tunes that I didn't know were covers/samples from another band. They were very welcome and showed me the influence coming from this album.
The multiple short bite sized treats contained in here were excellent, so much so that I needed a repeat listen to make sure that it was a superb album, and it was true.
Well done to Wire. It'll now be on my rotation list and likely I'll need to try more of their offering.

Really lived snippets of this, cool jazz type riffs, and I can see why people love this album. It just didn't keep the the standard and overall the album is just ok. Not amazing
I thought at the start this might reach three stars, but it didn't take long for it to become tedious. Van Morrison has this stop/start style which really grates my ears, coupled by the fact he can't sing. It just makes the whole experience awful. The real sting in the tail are two 10 minute tracks to finish off the album, just when you think it'll be done.
Thankfully I've only one more Van Morrison album to go... Please give me at least a year before you send it my way.

I love a number of the more recent QOTSA albums, but had never listened to this one, their debut. It's another case of band getting better as they develop which leaves me feeling a little disappointed with this effort. I'll persevere and it's encouraged me to catch up on their latest album.
There are elements of this album I like, but just wasn't sure about it so listened to it again. Still not sure about it so listened to some clips from the album, listened carefully and concentrated really hard on it. Skip, scan, listen, scan, skip, concentrate.
I found the verdict in the end. It's pretty dull.
I've always found Everything But The Girl to be hot and cold. Cracking hits, Missing, Rollercoaster. Opening this album with I Don't Want to Talk About It starts is on a high, but afterwards comes the cold, and sadly it feels a bit lame and lounge. Can't deny the vocals of Tracey Thorn are spot on and elevate this album to bring not too bad.
it's the same with some of their other albums, absolute peak quality in parts, but unable to maintain for the duration, continuing the hot/cold theme. The exception is Waking Wounded, and for me is their gold standard album that Idlewild doesn't reach.
Seems like a special choice for the day after Dolly died.
Respect to her craft, she's done amazing things. This album was good, great voice, nice songs. Just didn't love it.
This is straight out of the eighties, and not the good part of the eighties either. The use of synth is just poor and the whole album had dated very badly. It's like a crappy sound track of a crappy movie. Very disappointing overall as had high hopes for Simply Red.
Superb album, and with the incredible story behind it which introduced Cuban music to many people worldwide.
I was a little later to the party and been enjoying since the early 00's, bit I really have been enjoying it. While it's all Cuban, there is still a great variety between the songs, each created using wonderful musicians and beautiful voices.
The album is a delight from start to finish. If you get a chance to watch the film about the making of the album then you have to watch it
I love A Kind of Blue, but never wandered past that into Miles' back catalogue. Clearly a mistake as this album is also superb... But not quite as superb as Kind of Blue, it just wasn't quite there, fell a little short. Repeat listens will help, but for the moment it'll 'only' get a 4.

Enjoyed it far more than Strangeways, Here We Come. This feels like a Smiths album should feel and with nice tunes. This is The Smiths album that I can hook into.
Loved it. Starts off quickly to really hit you, and while it calms down it maintains a rhythm and sound quite unlike most other things I listen to. It has the feeling of being from a 60's film track, or an advert for an airline in the same era.
Decent Jazz, but not the best Miles Davis that I've heard. Fine for assume background music but not pushing it beyond that

Another one of these albums I've tried to listen to a few times before but with it never getting anywhere. Expectations were low, and expectations were exceeded. It was a great album and I just really enjoyed all the tracks, all different enough to give variety too. Not sure I'll push it trying more Beck albums after this though
I've been complaining about other albums being dull and bland, and I could see how you could describe this album in the same way. However, there is something about this one, it just hits a chord with me and it's very enjoyable. I had to make sure it wasn't a fluke so I've listened again on other days with the same result. It a nice peaceful album with his voice as an additional instrument adding to the whole ambience.
Completely average without any real merit. I think one of the songs in the middle might have been a single, it certainly seemed a little better than that others
I've tried this album a few times since it was released but never really got it. I'd say I probably like it more now than in the past, but I just don't feel it. Some great songs on it to be fair, but not something I'll be listening to again anytime soon. I did listen to this twice too make sure.
With two is the best songs ever written and performed this album is an absolute gem, the other songs are also fantastic making this a clear 5 star effort. Nick Cave at his best, love it

I find it amazing that I'm presented with bands that I have never heard of before in my life! These are bands that I like and have the style of music that dominates my collection. Well done Shack, nice album, one to listen to again but it's just missing something that'll stop it being top drawer
Lovely album on so many levels and one that deserves its place on the list. Shamelessly belting out the hits, and belting out the other songs too. This is the type of album that in here for.
This came with a lot of familiar tunes that I remember from when it was first released. Overall pretty decent as the fella can really sing. I've no idea what happened to him though, a one hit wonder? I hope not he deserves more.

There is a glimmer of hope in the middle with You're the Best Thing, but it's short lived. Thankfully Paul was able to recover with his later solo career.

Not everyone is going to like this, but I quite like a bit of depressing Leonard. This one is especially depressing as it deals with Leonard's own mortality towards the end of his life. This is not happy clappy music!
They do seem a little angry and shouty. Is probably be angry too if I had to listen to any more of this.
Did they invent grunge? I don't know but they certainly caused its explosion. It's always a pleasure to listen to this gem.

I wasn't expecting this to be so good. It was just a really nice album with songs that were clearly Indian. I can understand why George Harrison and friends loved it so much. I'll happily listen to this again!

People have been calling it bland, and that's not totally unfair. I would say she has a superb voice and I liked the album, but definitely not challenging on anyway and lacked interest variety works bring.
So, she'll get a middle of the road score as I certainly didn't hate it, nice enough.
First three songs very nice and chill, then gets heavier for second half. I like it, there is a lot going on.
While it's not a favourite style of mine I found it quite bearable, but not much more than that. A bit shouty.
So many albums on this list are just middle of the road. This was on but felt very dated, I'm sure it was a fresh and exciting sound as the time, and perhaps influential, but these days it sounds like a time warp.
I counted up the number of Steely Dan albums that I'd need to ensure and was disappointed, then I discovered the hidden levels and was distraught. Don't bother with this triple, it's pointless, dated, and has no value in today's world.
Low ball nothingness of dreariness
I never really understood the adoration The Rolling Stones get. Their albums just don't cut it, they'll have hits for sure but lack a depth of quality songs, and this is a perfect example. I'll stick to their greatest hits.
Fair to say this is my favourite Oasis album. I don't really like the other ones at all.
To be fair I loved this album when it first arrived and for all least a decade afterwards. Maybe it was overplayed, by me or through external sources. Either way it's massively overrated in the UK and Oasis themselves are even more overrated.
Still a decent album though!

Live the energy is this, great album to listen to.
I've noticed that my 'world music' ratings are often higher than UK or US music ratings. This is a sad consequence of the original list, world music has a much higher bar to achieve before it's included in the list, i.e. it's got to be awesome before it's included. Another argument for the mass removal of Deely Stan and Elvis Fkn Costello.

Superb album with some of the top Simon and Garfunkel songs from their catalogue. It's a classic that's lasted the test of time without dating. It doesn't get much better.
I put this on without any idea what was coming my way.
I wasn't expecting an orchestral album from 2010, but it was good so settled down with interest.
But I was wrong, track 2 came along and it turned out it was a rap album with one of those interesting introduction tracks. Now I'm disappointed as it's a genre I particularly dislike.
I'm following my rules, and I don't skip or abandon the album, so then track 3 hits, Faster, and now I don't know what's really going on. We're onto the third style of the album, some artists don't span this many styles in their entire career, nevermind within the first 3 tracks of their debut album.
It's a beautiful and wonderful album. Such an amazing singer with rich, full, songs. Only partially through my second listen and it's just getting better.
It's a travesty that albums like this remain on the list and fill vital space for newer, better, releases. Taking Heads do not need 4 slots, 2 absolute maximum, probably just 1, and I honestly wouldn't mind if it were 0.
A dull album by someone that can sing.
