Vedergällningen

Album Summary

This album has been submitted by a user and is not included in any edition of the book.

Garmarna is a Swedish folk rock band. Their songs are mainly old Scandinavian ballads. Vedergällningen (The Retribution) is Garmarna's third full-length album. All the songs are sung in Swedish. "Euchari" also contains some Latin. Garmarna was founded in 1990. Stefan Brisland-Ferner, Gotte Ringqvist and Rickard Westman were inspired by old Swedish music, which they had heard in a theatre. They began searching for old tunes and instruments. After two years of playing together, Jens Höglin joined the band on drums. In 1992 the band recorded their first EP. They thought that female vocals would provide a contrast to the dark mood of their music and invited Emma Härdelin, a long-time friend of the band, as the guest vocalist on the EP. She officially joined the band in 1993. The debut EP sold well in Sweden, and helped the band tour in Scandinavia.

The back half of the album was definitely my favorite, but the first few songs cleared up some burning questions I've had since childhood: I still may not know where he came from, but I can finally answer "Where did he go?" Sweden!

Hell yeah, this list needs an entry like this. Dark broody folk with a real pagan edge to it that still has heart.

Listened to this driving to a funeral yesterday. Not sure why, but it seemed to match my mood. Thanks for suggesting

Feels somewhere between like the Midsommar soundtrack and the Witcher soundtrack. I'm 100% here for it and would like a wench to bring me some ale. A little long and samey by the end. Shave off maybe 2 tracks and this is a 5 star slice of Scandi gold

The deepest green fading to black is meaningfully different than the night. Trees keep the world in them, are kept by the string instruments on display here. A great and alien sound swells into quiet, even quotidian. A high measure of cozy yet dangerous folk music.

Huh, Swedish folk. It’s alright, I guess there’s other folk I’d rather listen to but then again I don’t understand Swedish.

Can't say I have listened to much Swedish folk rock or Scandinavian ballads. Took me a few tracks to warm up, but I got into it.

Interesting, I think I was expecting something more traditionally folky sounding, this had a definite modern framing. I enjoyed it but I kind of all sounded the same?

Solid sound. Definitely should have been in the list instead of not-so-talented artists with 6-8 albums in it. Good one

The description said Swedish Folk so I wasn't expecting much, but this was much better than expected. Nice driving rhythms and strong vocals. Thank you to the person that suggested this one!

An interesting set of Swedish takes on a whole gamut of genres. Not exactly what I was expecting, but an eye-opener to some new musical styles. Even if the LP wasn't my thing musically, its addition to the list here embodies the exploratory spirit of what the 1001 project should be so I'm giving it extra props.

Great first half, like less fairytale-y and more straightforward Bjørk. Second half unfortunately too folksy...

Electronic-infused folk music? Was a bit of a hard pill to swallow tbh. Really started to drag. 2/5.

I like some folk music, I like some electronica, but not necessarily together. This is like combining milk and orange juice.

I'm sure that listening to this album surrounded by the natural beauty of Skrylle on a winter day has to be magical. Unfortunately, I had to do it on a gray rainy day in the middle of a big city

Although folk is not really my cup of (herbal) tea, I do like the sound this band manages to create. It however doesn't really appeal to me, but that's just personal taste.

This is really a niche kinda thing. Folk in a native language. I can understand that it can be appealing for some people. But I am nit one of them.

This is the kinda stuff that should be more on the list. I would never listen to weird Swedish folk music. It's strange and odd and different. A great addition. My personal rating: 4/5 My rating relative to the list: 4/5 Should this have been included on the original list? Yes.

Swedish folk rock with electronic production? Sure, I'll try anything once. A haunting take on traditional Scandinavian folk songs, Garmarna brings a blend of rock and electronic music that evokes a brooding atmosphere. I think it works exceptionally well and keeps things fresh with a few twists and turns in the style of production. It starts strong by capturing the attention of listeners with drums and bass informed by the then-popular big beat of the UK, and ends with a more ambient industrial sound that gives the vocals a hazy mood. Unique and notable, I found this to be an excellent choice for the user's list and a reason to keep coming back. CONTENDER FOR THE LIST: As for the original 1001 list, I think this is a bit too niche to fit the bill. Still a cool listen though.

I have a little bit of familiarity with Swedish rock that incorporates Swedish folk music, from listening to Dungen (and maybe to a lesser extent, Träd, Gräs och Stenar) By comparison, Garmarna seems a bit like the inverse to those to acts, in that they incorporate rock (and other styles) into music that is more traditionally folk. It was nice to kind of see the other side of that coin, if you will. I liked this record and a few of the more brooding songs, like “Nio år” reminded me of the music in the German television show, Dark, which I love. Always glad to listen to more non-English music. A nice inclusion on the user list.

Nice dark folk album. (My Swedish is not good enough to confirm. Every song could be about daisies and honey). The up tempo songs (f.e. Gamen) are the most impressive.

This was an interesting one. Swedish folk with an electronic twist. The first couple of songs were lively and pounding, and while they were fun I thought that style was going to get repetitive quite quickly. I was very pleasantly surprised then when the album suddenly started going into darker territory, with the electronics adding to this eerie soundscape rather than block rocking beats. Something very different and definitely worth checking out

Like a Scandi Fairport Convention with middle-eastern tendencies through a dark 1990s trip-hop filter. Just too much industrial clanging to keep me fully on side.

I enjoyed this album but don’t feel like I can give it an accurate rating. I do love the submittal of a non-anglocentric album though. I do feel like the production of this album is very of its time and may not be the best way to present these folk songs.

Reasonably interesting. The opening track is a bit of a shot, with a higher energy electronica vibe than most of the rest of the album. It definitely settles into a more folky atmospheric haunting energy that conveys feeling but doesn’t do a whole lot to engage the listener. The singer has a Dolores O’riordan delivery that I like, but the tracks aren’t particularly catchy.

I busy most of the day so couldn’t listen to it all the way to the end but I got the gist of this album after like the second song so I don’t feel bad writing this without having heard the last couple songs. Traditional swedish folk songs turned into a modern rock album; fun sound and concept.

Took me a bit to settle into this album, but it definitely grew on me. Thought it was German at first, but far too Scandinavian. Turns out it's Swedish--not sure how traditional it is but I could hear vikings and their maidens singing this one. Very cool! 3.5

An interesting insight into what was going on in Sweden at the turn of the century. At first I wouldn’t have guessed Scandinavian, (sounded kind of Indian and Irish to me). Nice enough, but nothing I’d listen to by choice.

I don't think I have an appreciation of this other than it's a Swedish album performed by Indian musicians? Other than being able to understand it, I couldn't really get into the flow at all. Probably difficult to listen to this more than once.

Oh boy. I'm not quite sure what that was but I do know that I didn't care for it very much. It wasnt the language barrier that bothered me but rather the lack of anything that drew me in. Not 1 star level bad but it did cross my mind.

Nah,Vedergällningen isn't for me, why is there so much poor indie folk on this user submissions list? Like don't get me wrong, there's a haunting eerieness to it that I like at times but that's literally all there is, and the language barrier doesn't help. If I'm going to listen to Swedish bands I'm gonna take Avatar and Millencolin and Sabaton and Arch Enemy thank you very much, this gets a 2/5, I could enjoy in small doses but it doesn't do it for me.
