Music is ok....but the lyrics SO INCEDIBLY LAME! I defy anyone to listen to and hear the lyrics to "love me like a reptile " and not roll their eyes. How can anyone intelligent person absorb a Joy Division lyrics and not laugh out loud at the drivel that Lemmy spews. I understand how musical taste is always subjective, but....

Here's one I don't get. This album gets accolades for being some work of genius, and I think it's terrible. I've played in some dumpy rock venues in my day, and I've heard my share of terrible bands. I mean awful. And this sounds like a lot of that — the band that's playing before you and, once they start, you think, "how the fuck am I going to get through this set?" and you have nowhere to go. Mediocre riffs, mediocre performance — and that's not even it. The whole point seems to be not to play well.
In fact, I was feeling pretty certain that the players on the song "Ace Of Spades" were not the same as the rest of the album (it does not appear to be the case). "Ace" has a musical acuity to it that just disappears after the song ends. It's noisy as hell and just on the edge of musical, but the playing is tight, the tones are massive, and the riff's alright. Then "Love Me Like A Reptile" comes on and the whole thing falls to pieces.
Somehow, through it all, there is an honesty to the music, the band attains a sense of purpose and cool, which must be what people are reacting to, because the music is lousy.

Everything you’d expect from a quintessential metal record of this vintage — growling vocals, driving riffs (several of which were outright lifted by Screaming Trees), themes straddling the sexy/sexist divide (“Jailbait”) beloved by Spinal Tap, total lack of irony, and high lyricism (“I’ve got no excuse/you like it fast and loose” “Wake up and let me in/for some original sin” “I love the life I lead/another beer is what I need” “come on baby, let me get you in the sack/you know the chase is better than the catch”). It all adds up to metal’s usual exercise in tedium.

The sound of extra chunky meth crystals cutting up the inside of your nose.
There is nothing in this world more ROCK N ROLL than this album. This album is the most ROCK N ROLL an album can be. This is the summit of Mount ROCK.
I dare you to play it quietly. I dare you to try to do something mundane while this is playing. We're only halfway through side one here on a sleepy Sunday afternoon and already I've been compelled to snort a line of bleach and put my fist through some drywall.
You know I'm born to lose
And gambling's for fools
But that's the way I like it, baby
I don't want to live forever
And don't forget the joker
Motorhead is the motherlode of the satanic deathwish vein that has run through rock from its first pickings. Playing Chicken with the devil. Lemme's living to 70 forced particle physicists to revise their Standard Model. Usually people who collect Nazi memorabilia piss me off, but Lemme is the exception that proves the rule. It would be disappointing if he didn't collect Nazi shit.
Another town I've left behind
Another drink, completely blind
Another hotel I can't find
Another backstage pass for you
Another tube of superglue
Another border to get through
I'm driving like a maniac
Driving my way to hell and back
Pass the superglue and all hail a TRUE ROCK GOD!

What a fucking rush. They don’t deviate much from this formula, but my god is their formula worth listening to. Their mission statement is as direct as their throttling brand of metal: We are Motörhead, and we play rock and roll.
It’s really remarkable how some records just consolidate the most perfect distillations of their genre - Ramones’ debut, Eno’s Another Green World and undeniably this one. Lemmy’s rock star charisma isn’t some exaggerated caricature, he fucking embodies every trope of the badass rocker in a completely authentic manner. And if you don’t like that, you can fuck off.
Even extremely subject matters on tracks like “Jailbait” can be read as a matter-of-fact narration of the full throttle lifestyle of this band. The songs and production still hold up today, and the oft wielded criticism that this record lacks diversity seems a bit redundant to me. There’s no point criticising this group for what they aren’t. They’re just Motörhead. And they play some exhilarating rock and roll.
Fav tracks: Shoot You In The Back, We Are The Roadcrew.

Arguably the only truly great band to come out of NWOBHM, Motörhead’s third album is an absolute speed-thrash masterpiece.
It’s tenacious, it’s fast, and if you’re listening to it correctly, it’s fucking loud.
Lemmy's vocal style truly stands alone, and he spends a little more time singing and a little less time yelling on this album compared to the first two. His gravelly vocal fry is unmistakable.
Fast Eddie’s rock n roll guitar is an absolute perfect fit to the songs as written, and his live performances are somehow even better.
Philthy Animal’s drums are almost pre-thrash metal, but they’re mixed in so perfectly and his fills are always right on the money.
The title track off the album is so legendary it’s impossible to say anything about it that hasn’t been said before. Just an incredible song.
My personal favourite on the album is “(We Are) the Roadcrew” an ode to the roadies not just that worked with Motörhead, but roadies all over the world. The unsung heroes of the rock n roll world certainly deserve such a great chorus.
“Fire Fire” is another song on this fantastic album that really stands out. I can’t say enough things about Lemmy’s lyricism, arrangement, and artistic capabilities.
There’s not a single song that lasts a moment longer than it needs to. I’m not sure I could even complain about a single thing on this album if I tried.
The most deserving album so far of a 5* rating.

Wow this is pretty good. I like this style of music honestly, really guitar heavy and great drums. Good reason to finally listen to motorhead songs that aren't just Ace of Spades. I also like being able to hear their accents haha
Ok so all the songs sound so similar but theyre pretty good. Don't love some of the lyrics but I think it's good.

As a pretentious punker in the late 70's/early 80's, this was the only metal band I liked, and this was the only album I liked. I actually have an "Ace of Spades" button, waiting to pass on to another generation of Motorhead fans. Lyrics and guitars are good and driving. Only criticism is the vocals--not enough variety--could use a break from the screaming at times.

Ace of Spades
First listen, this is pretty fun rollicking punky rock’n’roll metally thrash, if you don’t pay attention too closely to the lyrics. Musically, as a rock’n’roll/metal/punk act they are good at what they do, and the energy and attack are great. They are clearly far superior to the thrash and late 80s metal they inspired, probably due to that rock’n’roll swing and less double kick drum.
However the 2nd and 3rd time around it does start to lose much of that ‘charm’, the lack of deviation from their standard template becomes pretty obvious, and, apart from (We Are) The Roadcrew there not being anything nearly as good as Ace of Spades means it does start to get quite stale as a whole 35 minute listening experience.
Lyrically it’s pretty charmless from the off, and aside from a couple of songs it mainly consists of songs about shagging, which unfortunately conjures the mental image of Lemmy remorselessly humping groupies in squalid dressing rooms, smelling of sweat, unwashed leather trousers, fags and booze. And then of course there’s Jailbait. Charitably speaking you could say it hasn’t aged well, or that it’s a song satirising rock stars who shag underage groupies, but realistically they are a band not known for their subtlety. Either way the song is a pretty gross listen.
On first listen I thought this might scrape a 4, but on subsequent listens it regressed to the cusp of 2 and 3. Ace of Spades is banger and I like (We Are) The Roadcrew, but the other songs are a bit forgettable and/or a bit icky. Think I’ll stick on high 2 as I don’t think I’ll come back to it.
♠️♠️
Playlist submission: Obviously it’s Ace of Spades, but for a change I’ll go (We Are) The Roadcrew.

As with AC/DC, Motorhead has a formulaic sound. There isn't much album-to-album deviation from that sound - a mix of thrashy metal and punk. But just as with AC/DC the formula is awesome, and on their best records - like this one - it is irresistible fun. The four track run to start the album is terrific. A classic of the genre.

Alright, this is up my alley. I've been a fan of Motörhead since the 2000s, when Lemmy Kilmister and his band were prominent in the music video games I played as a young teen. Which is why it pains me to say that at this point, all three members of the classic lineup have long passed away - Lemmy, Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor, and "Fast" Eddie Clarke. Listening to Ace of Spades again feels like peering into a bygone era of heavy music. Sentiments aside, this album still kicks ass.
Credit where it's due to all the members - Lemmy's prominent bass lines and gruff vocals, Eddie's fast-paced guitar riffing, and Phil's kinetic drumwork. The band had always considered itself a rock and roll group, and boy, is this the kind of rock and roll I'm into. Pair that with the lyrics that describe the sleazy lifestyle of sex, drugs, and rock, with some Wild West motifs, and the result is a formula that worked well for the band. Even if some lyrics haven't aged well, particularly "Jailbait", it's not enough to deter me from enjoying this record.
Call it a bias toward "Fast and Loose" heavy music, but I enjoy Motörhead and am a proud owner of this album. The fact that Ace of Spades, title track and all, has maintained cultural relevance long after the band's end is a testament to an enduring legacy.

First things first: RIP Lemmy
Rating: Rock'n'Roll/10
My god here we go. Finally something that will piss off most people in fear of their daughter while she's already on her knees doing things that'd make a priest feint.
Ace of Spades is the natural opposite to clean and smooth-licked Glam Rock and anything mainstream.
This band and album are the reason why a lot of rock and metal bands even grouped up in the first place. It doesn't matter if it's not perfect in a technical way because it was never meant to be. It's the kind of album that shows you the middle finger while drinking on a motorcycle.
Yes, this music isn't for everyone, and that's a good thing. It makes you want to party, even if you just woke up. It demands room for its' sound, it punches through walls and throws critics out of the bar's windows instead of arguing normally. No, it's not morally appropriate, but who cares honestly? Sometimes, certain people just need to catch a fist if they won't shut up.
I think I'll start blasting this album to some human rights/environment protesters next time I'll come across them. Why?
Because fuck you!

HELL YES. “If you like to gamble I tell you I’m your man. You win some, you lose some it’s all the same to me”. RIP Lemmy. I love old school metal. Black Sabbath, Motörhead, Judas, etc. legends!! Set the stage for thrash (another favorite genre of mine), and new age metal. Love Lemmys vocals. Raspy, grimy, brutal. Absolutely my favorite. The guitars steady rhythms and sudden explosions of solos and harmonics. Bass and drums on point. Especially cannot understate how badass the cover looks too.

I've never listened to this. After 1 listen: instant classic. Straight ahead, authentic rock and roll. I hear punk, I hear heavy metal. Echoes of 80s "alt" metal like The Cult and Social Distortion. Lenny obviously sings from the heart, the whole band believes in every drum hit, every string picked, every word sung. It's not just music, it's identity.

"We are Motorhead, and we play Rock n Roll". Yes they did. I miss them and they were fantastic. This is the third of three great albums on the spin, and probably their best. It's brilliant from start to finish, with no miss-steps. 5*
Would I listen again? I do. Regularly. I've just put it on again.
Would I buy this album? Yes. I did.
Side One
1. "Ace of Spades" 2:48 - Thundering bass introduction. Then the opening riff kicks in. A tale about the love, and perils, of gambling. Great guitar solo. 2.48 of pure rock n roll. One of my favourite songs. 5*
2. "Love Me Like a Reptile" 3:23 - A love song. ( 😊 ). Fantastic riff. Great melody, yes melody. Great chorus. Wonderful closing solo. 5*
3. "Shoot You in the Back" 2:39 - A tale about Lemmy's love for "Western Movies". Crushing opening riff. A real toe tapper. This rocks. Great drum fills. This swings a little. 5*
4. "Live to Win" 3:37 - Great bass guitar introduction. Motorhead were never afraid to put the bass front and centre. A little slower paced. Believe in yourself, go for it and don't let anyone put you down. Probably one of the lesser known tracks, a deep cut. A change of tone from the 1-2-3 of the first three tracks. 5*
5. "Fast and Loose" 3:23 - Great opening riff. A tale of being horny in the early hours of the morning! "Don't get up, get down instead". 5*
6. "(We Are) the Road Crew" 3:13 - An ode, and thank you, to Motorhead's road crew. Great lyrics, wonderful lyrics and super drums. The wah-wah solo is fantastic.
A fantastic first side of music.
Side Two
7. "Fire, Fire" 2:44 - Again, probably one of the lesser known cuts. Backing vocals in the chorus. Pure rock n roll. 5*
8. "Jailbait" 3:33 - For as long as rock n roll has been around, the desire for teenage girls has been written about. Yes, it's at best dubious and no doubt some will get in a twist over this. But, this is a great song. 5*
9. "Dance" 2:38 - Great bass guitar underpinning the song. Again, the riff on this song is great. 4*
10. "Bite the Bullet" 1:38 - Fast paced and punky. A song that leads excellently into the next track
11. "The Chase Is Better Than the Catch" 4:18 - A mid-tempo song that swings, and has a real groove to it. The pre-chorus has a wonderful underpinning boogie woogie guitar riff. The song then has a nice break-down before rising to the closing solo. This would be a great album closer, 5*, but....
12. "The Hammer" 2:48 - And they're going out at 100 mph. They had already influenced what would become "Thrash Metal" before this album but with this track, the influence is clear. 'Philthy Animal' Taylor is fantastic on this. 5*

"We only thought of ourselves as a good time rock 'n' roll band, really... But we weren't trying to get a message across, apart from have a good time, you know: get pissed, get stoned, and fuck a chick. And that'll do." - "Fast" Eddie Clarke
Ace of Spades is the title of the fourth Motorhead album that came out in 1980. Motorhead is a Rock 'n' Roll band, they played Rock 'n' Roll and nothing but.
They played monstrously loud and appealed to both punk & heavy metal fans. They never aligned with either genre and repeatedly insisted that they played Rock 'n' Roll.
This 3-piece band helmed by ex- Hawkwind member Lemmy out punked the punks & out metaled the metal heads. They were as good as it got. They were as filthy as it got and you're going to love them like a reptile.
This weekend get some head... some Motorhead!
