Truth
Jeff BeckI found this more exciting blues than the earlier stones album. And great vocals from Rod.
I found this more exciting blues than the earlier stones album. And great vocals from Rod.
I enjoyed "almost blue" - his voice is a bit less affected here and has room to breathe. It's almost the oppposite of something like "the loved ones" with the crazy sampled orchestration. The album overall has pretty drastic shifts in tone but flows well overall.
Didn’t know this was the coconut and can’t live guy. Interesting overdubs, on the verge of experimental. Loved the bass on jump into the fire.
Lots of childhood memories. Love what tims vocals bring to this album, but I understand the dynamics where he couldn’t bring himself to be a supporting character in his little brothers band.
Slow, and kind of a weak voice. Thought it would pick up with “Macbeth” but his voice maintained the weakness even when the band added some edge. Not a fan.
Great songs, but I still can’t stand Morrissey’s voice. Bass is oddly loud and bouncy considering the mood of the album. Some interesting production with the vocal doubling and synth strings.
Found myself listening a lot to Brett Anderson’s vocal squeak on every note. It takes some getting used to. Cool fuzz guitar work and chord parts. Animal Nitrate is a banger.
Really enjoyed this, very experimental sounding psych rock with in my mind clear beatles influence. Have to listen again now knowing it’s all one story.
Not really my style but enjoyed a lot. The hits were all worthy, interested to notice lots of live instruments and non traditional rnb production. Not the biggest fan of the skits.
Loved the beach boys psych era wall of sound, aggressive guitars doing everything short of distortion contrasting a singer who, not to be cruel, had a pooh bear husk to his voice.
Not for me. Oldest sounding band forever, can’t believe they were young when recording.
Loved when the keyboards augmented Lanegand voice. Really atmospheric and quite quiet for how I remember the era.
Pleasingly sneery. Liked the punk and noise elements. Hear a lot of the vines in it.
Fuck yeah.
Unbelievable amount of singles. Weird to listen and notice he’s kind of a weak singer that brings incredible energy with a great band. Obviously a classic.
I can see the influence, and love the crooning. Not so crazy on the poetry.
I feel context is important with this one. I didn’t know that it was a three track solo demo by a guy who just got out of a mental home. Having said that, it sounds just like you would imagine.
Short and interestingly noisy. Have preferred other albums by then with more actual “songs” but I guess it’s at least pure.
Great, shorter than I imagined. Daltrey often doesn’t sing, even though he clearly can.
Dug the backing vocals, seems a lot of sneer in this list…
Easy listening. Or as much as it can be with that voice.
Liked this one a lot. Emotion and humour and surprise. Even the instrument introduction came out as funny. Just wish that he’d learned to properly fry scream on side 2!
Great, but makes me feel like Michael Bolton from office space
Just slow
Kinda fun and soulful but lacked a certain something to hook me in
Obviously brilliant, but they’re best? Well, my kids love it. Still a sgt peppers stan though.
Kinda warbled love poetry, less melodic than the smiths stuff. Kinda liked some of the production. Incel vibe on some of the lyrics.
Never noticed the auto tune until this time around. But I guess that was the price of Anthony’s singing. Still has great Melodies, their third best album.
Sorta more art noise with a guitar minimal, percussion bent. I thought it had enough attitude to be Japanese, if that means anything.
Loved the extended version. Learning it was all made with vinyl samples blew my son away.
Like hearing very hip hop track from the 90s expanded into songs. Loved the songs more than the guitar jams.
Less melodic and more chaotic than I was expecting. Felt like the intersection of punk and later art noise bands.
Kinda white for a black band. Not my thing.
Sorta light and poppy as I remember. Backing singer is out of tune a lot.
So slick and well crafted I thought they couldn’t have formed on their own.
Raw. Amazing playing. Great choruses and structure. Emotional. Loved it.
Smooth - loved the vocal numbers with nick cave and Jarvis cocker most. Interestingly complex jazz at the end considering how chill the rest is.
Lovely recordings, sweet harmonies, didn’t grab me like I hoped
Enjoyable ambience that I sadly now associate with stock music due to how many times it has been ripped off
Loved his voice. Crazy how similar in tone and range he was to his son he had nothing to do with.
Really was quite amazing by Ian gillains vocal range. Surprising deep purple don’t get the props led zeppelin and sabbath do.
Really appreciated the ambition on this
Just sort of sweet light folk, some times it gets a bit more uptempo for variation which helps…
Really enjoyed the jammy vocal layering. Prefer this to the way Chet faker does it.
Classic, especially with Thundercats additions
Sort of folk jazz with some English earnestness. Some really epic upright bass playing.
Great vocal range, vocals maybe way too high in the mix. Sort of big band jazz.
Apex level smooth
Cool attitude, nice post punk sort of feel, but a bit more minimal than my taste.
Sort of a hodgepodge exploration of the singers admittedly great vocal range but imo a tough listen. Lots of innuendo and cheeky lyrics.
Enjoyable, liked the wu tang guest tracks.
Proggier and more intricate than I expected. Really well recorded, great flow. Songs didn’t really jump out individually but definitely changed my scope of what I thought this band was.
Quite a stripped down guitar album, more than I was expecting at the time. His voice was showing some age, but still lots of variety
More stripped down than later stuff, hangs so much on Byrnes voice. Great bass though.
Voice has all of the ability that it does later, production is nowhere near what Ronson adds. Enjoyed the lyrics and the cheek, insane that she was 20.
Best debut from a second singer?
Light and dreamy but not as lush as the other album I heard. Didn’t give the emotional punch.
Wish this style of rhyming had been more popular. Intelligent and old school.
I know this record is important but I kinda hated it. The bandsaw vocals, thin production and terrible bass playing made this a tough listen, and I needed a lot of imagination to picture the live energy.
Really nice sounding record considering the technology. I finished thinking I missed the edge and scream of little Richard etc, like it was a bit safe.
Lots of range, even some soul. Neil’s voice less offensive than usual!
A few cool bits of production.
All my life I thought John was the best beatle. But after listening to this, I think it was actually Paul.
So much depth, some really pretty moments too. Had never listened all the way and loved it more than I thought I would.
Really quite enjoyable instrumentation, particularly the synth wobble bass and calypso percussion
Enjoyable if I’m in the right mood. Found the gibberish lyrics kinda grating.
Didn’t realise it’s all one narrative, kinda cool even if I usually find lower class English stories depressing af
Long album but great pace, esp with comfortably numb coming in towards the end
Great songs, interesting recording. Lots of plectrum noise.
Kinda boring except for the sonic experiments
Alt country needs the best lyrics or vocals in the world to earn a pass and these are just ok.
Good bit of variety
Can hear so many modern prog bands here
Classic and so influentual, trad percussion plus metal gave us slip knot.
Just a beautiful album with so much depth, hooks and range.
Amazing musicianship, genuine style.
Hard to seperate from the man.
More attitude than most punk
Full of classics but couldn’t get past the Chester Bellow
Still on my playlist today. Timeless.
great bass playing, full of classics, and before what i think is their best album. shame they didnt fire on as many cylinders afterwards.
Enjoyable instrumentation, voice a bit straight forward melodically. Clearly a Bergman fan.
Love the grace slick tracks, blues stuff not so much
Another classic, but a softer jammier album than it was in my memory
Obviously have a lot of love, hard to believe they went this out there with that much attention on them.
I’ve heard this album a lot but it doesn’t hit me, I call this genre claratyne house, because it’s all allergic white dudes.
Listening to this album I better understand why my metal loving friends wished nu metal bands would go harder.
I wish his voice had more variation, silky as It is
I think these guys are underrated as musicians
Enjoy the minimalism but the songwriting chops feel like they don’t come til later
Owe these guys heaps for rhcp and songs like damaged goods still get me going
Pretty great mix of goth and blues and rock, enjoyed.
Decent blues rock, some really impressive guitar playing, but some so so lyrics from Jim
Enjoyable pop, nothing jumped out
Great album, good balance of jams and bangers
Love the title track and guitar but I’ll never love mustaine’s gargle
Tough one for me. Interesting to hear how low her natural voice is on the filler tracks. Saga more interesting than the music.
Got a layered beach boys vibe, surprisingly textured and complex. Great great bass, even though his voice is kinda weak.
The 80s production and backing vocals really suit his style. Really got into it.
Brilliant, and timeless
Didn’t hold up as well as I hoped, although I admire how liam can get so many syllables out of the word “shine”
Sounds like standard jazz to me…
Just such damn great writing, and I love the live participation
Loved but production is so treble and cjorusy
Enjoyed the feel but found myself irritated by the looseness, like I was straining for the great moments to break through
Great guitar, less great singing. Old before his time.
It’s sort of histrionic and the lyrics are a bit silly but I got into the proto-elo vibe
Really love this era of reverb soaked harmonised pop and it’s probably because of David Lynch
Unique, but I got tired of the falsetto vocal. Felt like it needed visuals.
Enjoyed the jump in complexity, although still not where it would get to later.
Surprisingly deep and varied, ozzy sounds huge.
Really enjoyed when it got a bit darker and eerier mid album. Great atmospheric production.
Liked the new wave and hearing her with a band
Preferred the production but songs got weaker towards the end
Great playing, technical, epic but left me kinda empty
Love the storytelling, the humour, the production
A hard listen with small nuggets resembling proto industrial, I guess
So sloppy I kinda hoped this was a mental asylum recording like skip Henderson
I don’t get it. Sounded like amateur ramblings.
Underrated band that weirdly didn’t have the staying power of Elbow. As good? Yeah probably.
Was not expecting soft jazz
These guys really churned out the work. Loved the big band touches. And the long versions.
Slick trip hop/intellectual rap, nice international samples, clever lyrics
I just love the djing and this style of sample. And figuring out what exactly flav does.
Kinda hilarious to compare this record to the precision of what the beach boys were making at the time. But the swagger is all there.
The clever rhymes come so thick and fast you have to rewind
Legendary and relentless
Crazy complexity for such cheesy songs
I found this more exciting blues than the earlier stones album. And great vocals from Rod.
Pretty interesting and complex from a former punk bass player.
Not the best blur album, but still super enjoyable
I probably prefer the later albums with more lush instrumentation and harmonies, as his voice is sort of lispy on this. Still some great lyrics and tunes.
All the soft loud, trilling, whispering and cheesiness I’ve always disliked about Mariah for a whole album
Definitely preferred the originals over the standards
Impressive how tight the guitar and drums are and how loose the bass is and it still works.
I’ve been sleeping on Karen o as a singer.
The smoothest
So self serious. But ahead of its time.
Short and sweet. Really a surprised by how feminine his range sounded when younger.
Was really impressed even though the synths sound so basic. Way ahead of its time, although the first track kinda sucks
Some great production, but the lyrics of a spoilt toddler
Contrary to belief, goths are some of the funkiest people out there
Enjoyable, always wished it was a bit heavier
I’d never listened all the way through, but that’s definitely the way to do it
Long and kind of interesting, especially the really long bit with the molestation. Sloppier in timing and pitch than I expected. An achievement though.
Such beautiful arrangements like an old movie, just can’t get over that belted cheesy delivery
Joe Rogan somehow means I can’t listen
If this was what country was like I’d listen to country
Jammier and simpler than it sounds.
Industrial art noise, really not my thing
Great playing, listenable for prog, didn’t set my heart on fire
Honestly seemed fairly generic, could have been Sza or FKA twigs
Kinda my dads blues rock band, fairly shakey singing and some decent tunes but not inspiring
I love the structure and felt the journey of the album particularly with the reprise, but didn’t grab me as much as I’d hoped.
Maybe their darkest and sparsest album but still with the great dynamics and guitar creativity that made me love them
Aside from the dumb lazy religious track, this album is just legendary.
Really great considering where rock was at when they wrote it
An all time classic, I still can’t believe the chutzpah of eddies vocal sprinklings and Jeff’s fret less bass at their young age. The confidence of youth.
Full of great tracks but damn do I hate the skits and filler.
Amazing voice but the band confuses me whether it’s rock or pop sometimes
I guess this is almost experimental for this band?
Some nice complex arrangements but imo a little overrated
Pretty nice sounding considering how loud they were. I’m far more inclined to call them a punk band after listening all the way through.
Lively, smooth, not gangster. I miss hip hop being like this.
Sort of forgettable shoegaze drone saved by a bit of vocal harmony and occasional heaviness
Not much more to be said than it’s a shame they didn’t write more music
Puerile revenge fantasies
Nicely experimental given the era
Great but I really like the later stuff with more harmony and instrumentation better
Would like more without the jello biafra warble of the singer every time
Really cool, stylish sound with attitude for the time and great harmonies
Good but just sounds so old!
Loved it. Great discovery and so unique.
Sort of like a bright Johnny cash?
Really great, and surprisingly riffy for acoustic guitar. Little experimental bits were unexpected but evocative.
Classic, and can really still hear bowies backing vocals
Perfect album.
Sort of an odd duck with the religious allegory, flute and smatterings of prog. But it all comes together well.
Doesn’t hold up, given how much I used to thrash it. But clear that what makes this band great is all three are pulling their weight musician wise.
One of the best instrumental albums I’ve heard.
Better than I thought it would be.
Odd and soulful and sometimes meandering but funky
Energetic. Bluesy and kinda funky but also loose.
Virtuoso playing and singing with weirdly inconsistent song writing.
Not much more to say other than eddies tone makes you feel like he’s in the room there playing through a small amp.
