Album Summary
Duck Stab!/Buster & Glen, later renamed as just Duck Stab, is the fifth studio album by American art rock group The Residents, released in November 1978. It is named after the first side of the album, Duck Stab!, a seven-song EP released earlier in 1978 featuring shorter songs similar to the first side of Fingerprince. Buster and Glen, the B-side of the album, was intended to follow Duck Stab! presumably in early 1979. After the first pressing of Duck Stab! quickly sold out—which was an oddity for the band—they decided to re-release it as an album, merged with the unreleased Buster and Glen. This was also in part due to the audio quality of the original EP, which The Residents stated was poor. The shorter length of the songs made the album more accessible for fans who had recently heard "Satisfaction", and songs like "Constantinople" and "Hello Skinny" helped cement the band's cult following. Some noted that the Residents were approaching commercial elements with this EP, but they were purposefully avoiding others, such as a traditional chorus/verse structure. This album features guitar by Philip "Snakefinger" Lithman. The album was also included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Excellent work music, relaxing and contemplative. Helps me focus instead of giggling during the last crucial steps. The music perfectly mirrors the look of horrified confusion I see in their eyes when I start sewing back their arms where their legs used to be. I only wish they'd appreciate it the way I do. 9/10
Unconventional, yes. Terrible, no. Doesn't deserve to be the 4th lowest rated album.
Uuhmmm that was weird. Interesting, fun, intriguing. But mainly weird.
Oh… I really struggled to get into this one. Reading about the story of these crazy Eyes of the beholder helped me make a little more sense of their surprisingly modern sound and their weirdness. Our RPG game master once cleverly used their music to illustrate the absurdity of a situation, and that memory also helps me find some meaning in all this madness… and some fun. Still, those cartoonish vocals make the whole thing pretty hard to digest. However, I’ll give some of their other albums a try, just to push myself a little further into their weird universe.
Oh boy, I don’t need to look at the reviews to know this one is controversial. For a group of people adventurous enough to commit to listening to 1001+ albums spread across all genres, there is a surprising resistance to experimental music. Personally, the only thing I don’t like about albums like this is that I usually need to listen several times before I can listen to the music closely enough to decide whether I even like it. Non-conventional sound structures are always challenging, but that is by design. Was there another band before The Residents who were as irreverent to traditional forms of music? Especially considering that this was made in the mid-70s, these cats managed to generate some unique sounds from their instruments. Look, I can understand why many people don’t jive with music like this. It is theatrical music that is intentionally designed to make the listener feel uncomfortable. However, this band is listed as an influence by many bands--Primus, Joy Division, Ween, Devo--who go on to define future genres. This was the album that brought the band to the attention of many of them. As a result, it absolutely belongs on this list. As for me, the album inspired me to work my way through their discography. Just not today. I think this is a band I’ll need to check out in small doses. Fun fact, this was a catch-up album, so next I’m listening to 4+ hours of Ella Fitzgerald. I hope I don’t get whiplash.
Ugh. I can appreciate they are doing their own thing, which is always admirable, but man t's not fun to listen to.
Weird and cool. Duck Stab
This is terrible. I love it. In all seriousness, weird shit like this is right up my alley. I'm shocked this came out in the 70s because it still sounds ahead if it's time.
I would much rather have more difficult listens like this, left field noise and weirdness, at the expense of bland pop from the 2000s, or generic indie from the 90s, or any of the other well-covered mainstream genres. A refreshing, challenging listen, rooted in cartoon music and Frank Zappa
at least it's fucking interesting! at least it's provocative! I can't really give this a high score because it just barely meets the criteria to even be music. I think they would honestly be so much fun to see live, or even a video. And there is rhythm to it. I would absolutely much rather be forced to discover/listen to an album like this than some sad stadium rock. When the first track played, I was like, oh god a full album of this. But by the end I had kind of gotten into it. There's some kind of upside down world nursery rhyme thing going on, it reminds me of the very old and kind of inappropriate 1940s mickey mouse cartoons i used to watch on pirated vhs tapes in India as a kid. There's no occasion to put this on, ever, which is sort of what's appealing about it imho. Still I really cannot in good conscience give this more than a 2 it's just so pretentious fav track — The Booker Tease
Definitely art-rock. Something you almost want to sandwich between plexiglass and mount on a dim-lit wall. Not meant for general listening, definitely not the album you want popping up on your random likes during a social gathering. No, I listened to this 3 times consecutively, each time paying attention to different details, the motion of the energy, the awkward or unsettling composition, the transitioning between tracks or EPs, the influences and the influence. This sounds like a grandparent to Primus and the Adult Swim musical energy. I would pay good money if I found this LP, I'd pay good money for the separate EPs. This is music for a very specific, very curious mood, and would be an excellent addition to the collection as a solid piece of audio art. I bet seeing them live here in the late '70s was a complete mind-fuck experience. 3.9/5
I didn’t really like it, but it was different. “Your Heart is like a silken sponge that calls saliva love” and “oily ole egg with a red peg leg” are sample lyrics. I gave up on the nonsense (to me) lyrics 1/2 way through, and then I went back in to see if I heard “Creaming eyes explode upon an apple toad,” and indeed I did. That shows up on “Birthday Boy.” I like the all too brief “Booker Tease.” Some of it is swing and miss, but kudos for taking a big swing. I enjoyed music much more than the vocals. On the whole, not my thing, but I appreciate their experimentation.
Odd but for some reason I really liked it.
Of course, it is not a beautiful listen. It is an unnerving, profoundly uncomfortable record. When assessing musical relevance, it is the avant-gardism of this record that makes it sufficiently significant to earn its inclusion in the list. 6/10 [KEEP]
honestly liked finding the grooves
Woahh, this is extremely avant-garde. I've heard a lot of out-of-the-box albums before, though nothing as condensed and dedicated to humour as this. You can tell they had a lot of fun recording. It left me super confused by the end, like they were all in on a very funny joke I wasn't privy to. Though it didn't feel mean-spirited, more like light-hearted teasing than taunting. For that, I actually didn't hate its surreal collection of random instruments and noises. “Blue Rosebuds” reminded me of the animated web-series ENA, so that's a plus! However, I'm not rating it any higher cause I don't think I'll ever "get" this type of music, and it would be dishonest of me. There were moments of genuine immersion (e.g., I actually liked “Weight Lifting Lulu”), but they don’t last long. At least I was never bored! I guess the bottom line is: I'm grateful that this challenge continues to expose me to stuff I'd never go out of my way to find. The overall experience of listening to deconstructions like this helps me reflect on how limiting the definition of "music" often is, even if nobody has to love the end product itself simply for being different.
Thats a 5 stars right here
Immediately liked this album, feels like my brain is a sheet of tinfoil that is being crumpled up, constantinople feels like a voicemail to me I feel afraid to give this album five stars lest I look like some kind of tryhard who wants to look special for liking music that objectively sounds discordant and strange but I feel like listening to this album just brightened my day and I loved all the sounds, it was so engaging in a way that really connected with me. Its so silly and fun and its also short! Sub 40 minute album where all the songs are 3.5 minutes or less, its like a beautiful spread of pastries laid in front of you and who are you to judge if some of the pastries have junk like DDT and copper tubing in them. It was also just really a treat to get to listen to something so different, I'm glad they included this album on the list. Had no idea where any song was going and I especially liked all the songs that had a driving baseline to them, makes me feel like I am working in a slaughterhouse and having a really fun time at it. If you are coming to this years saw trap themed halloween party you should know that the laughing song Will be on the playlist. Likelihood that the members of this band lezzed out: 4/5, they are like space aliens to me so I think that they definitely had all kinds of shit going on that I honestly wouldn't even understand.
I don't know if this is a 5 necessarily, but The Residents are true originals, and I love them. Just utterly bizarre, demented audio experiments, pretty much constantly on this thing. The Residents have gleefully set up shop within the rotting carcass of rock and roll, pop, and early electronica, and are selling curdled milk out of it. It's also surprisingly musical, genuinely eerie, and lots of fun at times. To be honest, I'd even argue that there are a couple of perfect songs here, but there are also a few more fragmented tracks that I'm still negotiating with. Although I revisit this album pretty regularly, so it may be a matter of time.
Bottom 20 is becoming my favourite part of this challenge. This is what I signed up for. Favourite track: The Electrocutioner
Much like Mr. Bungle or Captain Beefheart, or a lot of Zappa albums, it's something that you listen to and think, "Hmm, that's... interesting," and not much else. There's obviously some really creative folks behind it but at the end of the day it's just not enjoyable to listen to. It's barely music, and I'm not really sure who it's for.
Definitely different. Pretty good.
Weird. But interesting.
Man this was too weird to be good. Dr Demento kind of stuff but without any of the charm. I respect the artistic “vision” but musically it just kinda sucks. It’s not good or innovative enough to be considered for a list like this; it’s just weird for weirds sake. Not as bad as the bottom 10 ranking it has but not by a lot.
Its one thing to make this album but its a whole other thing to say that I have to listen to this before I die. Somehow not the worst thing I've heard on this list.
This is just weird avant-garde artsy noise shit. More than once, I lost my way on this record, not realizing that the song had changed. It's fine background noise, I guess, but I'm entirely underwhelmed by anything except the urge to be like "Wha?" "Wha da fuq?" and I'm bewildered at the fact that anyone would LIKE this. I can't imagine ever listening to it again. This record is just garbage.
Wahnsinn, was für ein Dreck
Was bin ich hörend?
Fictional fictional characters.
This is the first one I just could not get through. Listened to half of it and despised every second. 1/5
What
What record executive heard this and said “Yes! This is exactly what we were looking for!”
Why? Why is this on the list is all I can say.
I could do better which says a lot. This is regrettable and forgettable
Someone please just shoot me, I don't want to live in a world where this is considered art. It's just avant-garde, which is code for musical wankery. Not the worst of this sort of bs we've had, but buddy this sucked and was super creepy too. I don't understand the appeal of listening to music that objectively sounds bad. What are we doing here guys?
Whhhhyyyyy is this taking up space on this list??? Just a bunch of tracks w discordant sounds & weird lyrics
Genuine question: what the fuck was that? Who suggested this into the top albums you must listen to must be suspended pending investigation.
I now know two songs featuring the city of Constantinople. This one is atrocious. Why are albums like this on the list?
Can we be fr
Constantinople - 13 Sinister Exaggerator - 27 The Booker Tease - 64 Blue Rosebuds - 31 Laughing Song - 24 Bach Is Dead - 25 Elvis And His Boss - 16 Lizard Lady - 38 Semolina - 22 Birthday Boy - 5 Weight-Lifting Lulu - 31 Krafty Cheese - 23 Hello Skinny - 24 The Electrocutioner - 26 Duck Stab - 17
I have no idea why I needed to hear this. 1/5
It’s odd, alien-sounding stuff. I don’t hate it but the vocals make it tough to want to revisit. It’s almost as if Les Claypool wrote a goofy musical
What the fuck is this shit? Are you trying to make me quit this whole thing?
Repeat listen
Feels like it is trying too hard to be weird
This is an album that you make with your friends for fun as a joke
The musical equivalent of being trapped in a liminal horror movie or a madhouse. There's something alluring about the album despite how incomprehensible the album gets at points. I do appreciate the commitment to the bit of making an album that is unsettling as possible, and it makes for a fascinating (if unappealing) experience. Top tracks: Bach is Dead, Elvis and His Boss, Krafty Cheese
Wtf is this
These fellas walked so buttholes could be suffered
Absolute garbage. Listened to 3 songs. Dreadful. 0 out of 5.
I don't like it, but I think that's what they're going for. They don't want me to like it. And that's fine.
This is weird is fuck. But then again, so am I.
If i could give minus stars I would
Awful. Please get help.
Absolute garbage. If there is more than one album like this in the book then Robert Dimrry should be arrested
About as strange as you'd expect from an album titled "Duck Stab". Unsure how to feel about it. Probably will listen again. Oddly compelling. (Please do not stab ducks.)
Fuck this album
Good weird music.
otx exw akousei
When the first notes of this album rang out, I wasn’t quite sure what I was in for. Now, 14 songs and 35 minutes later, I’m still not sure. It’s certainly not for everyone, not sure it’s for me, but I don’t mind it, trying to typify this seems foolish, a southern Devo?…maybe a little bit, a proto Butthole Surfers?…possibly. It’s anything but boring à la Butthole Surfers, and the whole art/music mix thing seems Devo inspired, but with seemingly very little to none of the Akron crew’s pop sensibilities. I don’t love it, but it intrigues the hell out of me. Might look into more of their work.
I want to write something actually poignant about how just because you make something unlistenable on purpose doesn’t mean it’s high art and all but I hated this experience so much I want to spend as little time on this as possible.
*1978. American 'art' rock. *This would be excellent for Halloween Horror Nights. *Otherwise, it's just creepy and weird and awful. RATING - Nightmares/10
Definitely not my genre of music.
Would I listen to this album again? No BUT did I enjoy the album? Also, no - but it was certainly interesting. I'd take this over Leonard Cohen.
Just bad.
So, I guess I’m a Residents fan now. That was a lot of fun. You can keep your guitar/bass/drum bands. They sound the same to me. This doesn’t sound like anything else. To some that may be bad, but for me it is extremely my shit. I like not being able to anticipate what is coming next. 4 stars
Well, Duck Stab/Buster & Glen was the longest 33 minutes of my life. This album is in the bottom 5 for this whole site and after listening to it, I can absolutely see why. This album feels like the worst drug trip that you could possibly have with music that's utter chaos with tinny quality to it, very odd vocals which go from this deeper sounding guy to an annoying cartoon character and lyrics that are just about the most random shit you could possibly imagine. All this combines into an album that is very rough on the ears and in my opinion, has got to be one of the worst things that humanity has ever created (that is, if this group even are humans) Best Song: The Booker Tease Worst Song: Birthday Boy
Experimental but not really very good. Bye Bye.
I am conflicted. It's a bit insane. Kind of hard to listen to at times. Too weird, almost cartoonish. Then I heard the Electrocutioner, and something clicked. I can't give it more than a 3 right now, but it's doing something, that's for sure
Exactly the kind of weird shit I hoped would be on this list.
when ween's not brown enough #weird !! but it's so fun and silly i love it . it's not even weird and silly in a way that like sounds bad . it's just a little goofy i don't get why this is so hated :( #JUSTICEFORDUCKSTAB
couldn't get into it..
Feels like when I listened to Cannibal Corpse and Aphex Twin as a child, I listened just to say I listened. Horrible and not nice.
Unknown to me. Weird, but worth to listen again.
Super weird
After seeing reviews I was putting this off, but it's not much different than the strangest stuff from Robyn Hitchcock or They Might Be Giants, but there's nothing approaching serious songcraft like those artists. Didn't hate it.
There is definitely a world in which I enjoy the residents but trying to listen while focusing on work just wasn’t my fav vibe. 2.5
In my book, you don’t get a pass for being annoying just because you were doing it on purpose. This album goes out of its way to earn its 1 star. That being said, I see the vision. There are moments of clarity in this for me where I hear a genuinely interesting idea. Idk, I think my reaction is exactly what The Residents wanted so the way I see it I’m honoring their legacy.
I really hated this album. I feel like life and chance punished me by making me listen to all of this, especially because its original version has 14 songs and with reissue after reissue, the album ends up having 40 conceptually unlistenable songs from a musical standpoint. There wasn’t a single track that I fully enjoyed, I couldn’t even stand some of them but I continued with my ordeal anyway. I recognize the disruptive value of the proposal and I think I value having discovered them more for their historical value than for their musical. It was something I had to know.
Very odd and off-putting but yet weirdly compelling. Even if the grin on the cover is demonic.
This is unlike anything I've ever heard. I love the wiki backstory. The Booker Tease like Pink Floyd Money? It's the bass line. We are in flavour country and my taste buds are getting accustomed. Gotta give credit to this journey for exposing me and broadening my horizons to the point where I don't outright discount something weird, or different, as terrible. Blue Rosebuds has me thinking of some medieval music influence, like a madrigal, or something akin. How many lump this in with ol' Troutface Captain Beefheart. Loving the southern drawl accent and Crispin Glover like Clowny clown clown madness that is Laughing Song. Hello Skinny with that bass clarinet sounding like the Arabian Dance from Nutcracker Suite. Lovely. I don't know what to make of this. It's brilliant. Cohesive. Chaotic. Would I listen to the whole thing again. Absolutely. I have a rule of 2 if I don't quite get it the first go. Down the road? Maybe in a fever dream. 3ish. 4. cause in retrospect.
듣는 동안 정말 힘들었고, 고막을 포기하고 싶었던 적도 있었다. Listening to it was truly grueling, and there were times I felt like giving up on my eardrums.
I couldn't stop listening to this yesterday. While it's not the greatest, it was keeping me coming back. Weird AF. I could see young Dean and Gene Ween listening to this and trying to imitate it
The first notes had me very concerned for my mental health that was in store by jumping into this one. But I'm committed, damnit, and I'm no quitter. Did it get better as I continued listening? Hard to say, but I will say that I found myself enjoying it, and never was there a dull moment.
I didn’t last 10 seconds
This Experimental Rock album feels like being trapped in a carnival where someone is trying to imitate the sound of chalk scraping across a blackboard with their voice, while a warped fairground band plays in the background. The cheap-sounding synthesizers, distorted electronic textures and strange rhythmic patterns create the carnival machinery, while the heavily processed, shrieking and nasal vocals become that unbearable scraping sound. I feel less like I am listening to songs than being subjected to a series of bizarre attractions that are deliberately designed to make me uncomfortable. The short, abrupt tracks keep throwing another grotesque little scene at me before I have time to settle into anything.
Don't think I know much Residents. Hmm, interesting sounds, and given the year more worthy of attention but I don't know. Lo-fi weirdness, 3 Heard before? No Owned: No, 106/411 (25%) Will I get: No
what the fuck you know what, they probably had so much fun in the studio making it! They should not have released this to the general population.
Fun fact, Lizard Lady was written about me
I’m sure I don’t get it and I can accept that, they’re definitely at least partially just fucking with us. I also don’t have to like it or want to listen to it though. I am giving it two stars because it’s also funny and interesting. Random Martin Prince from The Simpsons feature on Blue Rosebuds? Second act montage needle drop in my biopic: “Birthday Boy”
This album was ahead of its time, as a 70s album that had an 80s heavy synth sound. Unique and innovative. Can’t say it’s my usual taste but there were threads within the album that I liked. 2.5/5
Great songs to disassociate and feel weird to 👍🏼
finally we’re getting sillayy this haunted banjo kazooie music straight up made me feel unnerved and uncomfortable and creeped out during some parts, that’s art! and i think that’s beautiful 3.5 because i don’t know how much ill come back to it but i enjoyed myself thank you VERY much
As is so often the case, avant garde here is just code for "unlistenable self-important dreck that is utterly devoid of bangers."
short. definitely modern sounding in places. some nonsense but not the worst of the avant garde on here. silly. poor duck.
Det här är bara konstigt! En etta
this is genuinely the worst thing to ever come across my ears 0.5/10 best song - the booker tease (i guess)
