Reviews (page 2 of 8)
Definitely unique. It's weird giving this 3 stars, as I usually give that to middle of the road, not particularly good, not particularly bad albums. This album isn't one of those, but flip-flops between "I wish I never had ears" and "This is musical genius"
I mean, points for influencing Primus, I guess?
I guess I'll give it a star for creativity because it was so unique but this was just flat weird
Not so good
No. I listened to this back to back with “Low” from David Bowie, which isn’t exactly top 40 pop listenable stuff. But the difference is stark - Bowie manages to say something that feels like a complete, mature statement that is art. These guys sound like a bunch of high schoolers who could be good if they stopped fucking around in the studio. It’s immature and weird for the sake of being weird, not for the sake of advancing art or making a statement. Theres enough glimmers of talent that I won’t give it a one star but it’s close.
I was checking my history a couple of weeks ago and realised that, whilst I had had a good number of the highest rated albums on the list I had not had any of the lowest. The next day, I got Dagmar Krause’s Tank Battles, and today I got this. I was happier two weeks ago.
And I thought Captain Beefheart was weird. Wow. And according to AllMusic, compared to their other albums, this is "probably the least experimental of the bunch". Still, I'm glad I listened to (some of) it. Many of the songs, like "Laughing Song", remind me of Les Claypool quite a bit. Interesting to see that Primus, Mr. Bungle, etc. didn't actually invent the circus-freak-music wheel. 2/5 for novelty, but probably will never listen to this group again.
3/10. It's hard to make a song about Constantinople that I won't like, but these guys did it. There were some kind of cool songs on there, and the sing-songy vocals did work with the weirdness of the sound, but at the end of the day it was just unpleasant to listen to much of the time.
Oh boy Duck Stab!
Fuck You Robert Dimery
knew this was gonna be some bullshit just from the title
Anyone else discovering that music can always get worse
Try hard odd
Are you kidding me?
Thirty-four minutes of this was more than I could handle. There’s a fine line between an open mind and one where your brain just falls out, and this album definitely crosses it. With its distorted vocals and childlike-yet-creepy melodies, this is easily one of the most off-putting and stupid listening experiences I’ve ever had. Proceed with extreme caution.
Im not doing this.
What the actual fuck am I listening to? Hilarious that this is their most accessible album according to wiki. Reminds me of the worst parts of Zappa and Captain Beefheart. Went from bad to worse when they started singing one of the worst songs of all time, Happy Birthday To You. Future Kev do not come back to this unless it's to prank someone.
I like off the wall, weird music. This sucks ass though.
What a shit. Minus 100 stars
This is a joke right?
No.
wut? i am too stupid to get it
Awful. 1st album I stopped before the end. Juvenile, discordant, repetitive. Just unlistenable.
Well..that was a thing
A bit of a high school prank of an album and there is much better music that is avaunt guard on this list.
14 canciones y 38 minutos. 1 estrella.
2 ducks in a row and they both sucked, this one was worse.
HUUMORIA HUUMORIA:.. PIKKU PELLEILY JOS SATTUU NIIN KANNATTA KAATTOO VITTU PEILII.. KATTOKAA VITTU PEILII.. sinister exaggerator
There is experimental music and then there is this. Utterly insufferable.
Nah…I’m good, thanks.
No va
Entertainingly weird but I'm not sure how much I'd actually listen to it as it's genuinely unpleasantly out of key a lot. I'm interested but in a purely intellectual way.
The sound is terrible. It sounds like they were just trying to put whatever sounds. They could come up with together and put a beat behind it. I didn’t find any artistic value to this at all.
Um. This is bizarre. I feel like this is something you would hear as background noise for a modern art museum installation. Interesting for sure, but really hard to get through. Was hopeful this was a death metal/punk album due to the cover art alone :-D
this is one of those rare occasions where I really wanted to like the album but couldn’t fucking stand to finish listening to it. it’s like they made good, interesting shit and then put forth great effort in making it unbearable for human ears. whoever listens to this regularly should seek therapy.
I would give it 0 if i could. What the fuck.
Albums like this make me wonder why I bother with this project. I hate suffering through these ugly noise albums. Ugh how’d they even find this crap smh
Playing through all the songs once is enough for 10 lives.
This one sure pushed my limits on my no skip rule. It did have a few bass lines that were groovy. A little bit of a Les Claypool feel to some songs.
The longer it lasted, the less I could tolerate it. When my neighbor started drilling and it took me too long to realize, it's not part of the music, I knew: It's not for me. I do like experimental stuff like Pere Ubu, but this feels too forced.
unlistenable garbage - this is what happens when everyone thinks they have what it takes to create experimental music (spoiler: they do not have what it takes).
Piece of shit
Barely listenable. I've said before, I don't mind a bit of experimental, but I'll be experimenting with the 'off' button now.
Avant- gard noise…art not not music
I can't get into this at all. I like weird music, but this kind of weirdness doesn't work for me. 1 star.
I think Whit called this one when he asked that I turn off the “nightmare music” on the way down to Russellville. I disliked it so much that I stopped after a few tracks.
I’m glad we live in a world where different people come to music for different purposes, but the purpose this album serves (or at least seems to serve) isn’t for me. I won’t say it’s “bad,” but I can confidently say I will not be returning voluntarily.
Worst album I’ve ever heard, and I like weird stuff
This is the album someone puts on after you say "I'll listen to anything" and they reply "ANYTHING???"
Best Song: Constantinople. This got a brief chuckle out of me before I realized that this was by far the musical and comedic highpoint of the album and it was all downhill from here. Worst Song: The Booker Tease. This is literally just noise. Overall: I appreciate experimentalism as much as the next guy, but I feel like too often experimental bands really just have an aversion to editing. This album is stuffed with dozens of tracks (and according to Wikipedia, this album was one of the first of 40+ presumably similar offerings), and I just wonder if any thought or curation went into any of what is presented here. Sure there's a few moments that give a sort of funny-itchy feeling, but everything feels like a first draft, thoughtlessly created and equally thoughtlessly consumed.
hmm. I can always appreciate.. but I will likely never listen to this again
I feel like I am being trolled. This album was not good for my mental health
Mostly unlistenable dreck - this strikes me as art for art's sake. That is to say it is without any discernible purpose. The best part of the album was the songs were, gratefully, short.
not my music at all. experimental genre? anyway. yuck. not for me.
I get why people were influenced by this but that person is not me. Some songs are listenable and others aren't but it gets more annoying the longer you listen and very tireseome.
i don’t have anything against weirdos but why would i listen to this shit?
To be honest, I skimmed this and found it really a challenge to enjoy. It's like the soundtrack to a mass murder or something. Blech.
On album #924, I have finally found the most intolerable album on the list.
Couldn't get through it
Yeah this was nonsense. I did not finish it.
If I could rate it lower I would. Painfful
Was the included on the list of albums because it demonstrates how much you can suck and still gain recognition? Zero stars.
The instrumentals had potential but the vocals were beyond terrible
There’s a sub genre of music on this project ‘collection of random sounds’ - within that genre, and I can’t believe I’m saying this but, this is actually probably one of the best. I think in terms of what it’s trying to do and the atmosphere it’s trying to create it’s probably the most commercial and coherent of those albums. Having said that, I’ll also never listen to it again 1.4
No need for an album whose only purpose is to annoy you.
Ridiculous, just harsh sounding and frankly pretty spooky considering the season. Its good bad music if that makes sense.
Christ...
I think I would have to be stoned to enjoy this. It's creepy and kind of disturbing.
0/5 Wow this was not for me.
Dear god, this was genuinely difficult to listen to. The whole album was weird and off-putting. It could be the soundtrack to a demonic carnival. Easily the worst album I've ever listened to. Zero stars.
No doubt there's an experimental pioneering aspect of this in 1972, and probably inspired a bunch of our now well-loved artists, but it doesn't hold up to modern standards, it's just, well, annoying. 1.5
Only my second one-star review. Weirdness for the sake of weirdness. Singer sounds kinda like Les Claypool Primus if he didn't have much musical talent. And the whole thing is just not particularly pleasant to listen to. I get the whole 'deconstruction of the musical paradigm' thing -- and at least it has a backbeat instead of just being noise. But it just goes...on...and...on...like the soundtrack to a badly constructed haunted house ride. And really -- all the live tracks and other versions? I mean, just why? So, really not my thing. I would have been just as happy never hearing this.
elektr. punk, 1978 ->1
Dieptepunt.
Unironic and unpretentious five stars in my book. Initially I was skeptical of the album and groaned when it appeared in the list - I like some more experimental stuff but it's more in an appreciative sense over an actual sense of enjoyment. So imagine my surprise when this thing goes in such fascinating, fun directions. The kind of music Frank Zappa would conjure up if you locked him in a room with a MPC and an old Moog, or if Les Claypool dropped the bass and went all-in on the synth equivalent of a Photoplayer. Lyrically surreal, strange, it's a whole weird surrealist hellscape of sound that seems to keep poking fun at its incompetent incohesiveness while also demonstrating, in these little pockets of magic, that it's all an act. It's a nightmare comedy, Sock in staccato, a dancing jester on spinning vinyl, avant-garde showing off. It's brilliant. Not exactly a pleasant listen (to put it mildly), but in the same way as a smoky shot of Macallen. You can't chug it straight from the bottle - you have to taste it, poke your tongue at it, appreciate it for what it is, abrasive and special. You can tell this is the kind of music that you either really grok with, or it'll sound like nails against a chalkboard. Considering some of the otherwise well-respected albums that have completely flown past me in the list it's nice being on the former side for once. Fav tracks: Constantinople, Blue Rosebuds, Elvis And His Boss, Hello Skinny, The Electrocutioner
Loved this…..if I was gonna make music it would be like this!
Totally weird and totally fun, great stuff! Also feels pretty ahead of its time in the synth department, these guys have been following Kraftwerks development, I think.
I started this album while I was driving on the highway and Constantinople had my laughing so hard for how insane is sounded I nearly went into a ditch. This has to be just music for an arthouse installation or something. Clearly nobody said no to these guys at any point and you know what, I'm really glad they didnt. I dont get it, I dont understand it, but I'm so glad high octane garbage like this exists. This has to be a joke entry so I will treat it as such.
An album sent straight from Hell
WTF is this? Why have I never heard of this? And, more importantly, why do I love it? Everything about this is deeply disturbing.
Trolls gotta troll!
Another "been meaning to listen to this for ages" band down. Going to fall headfirst into this rabbit hole.
YES YES YES INDEED LOVE THEM EYEBALL BOYS
I mean, 1978, this must've been wild. This is still wild in 2026. This is the soundtrack to David Lynch's internal monologue. Why anyone would choose to learn how to play an instrument and then get together with other instrument players and make these sounds is mind boggling. I love Ween and this album out-Weens Ween. The cast of characters they introduce you to over the album is like a circus of misfits and weirdos, you can see their influence on Tom Waits. I feel like I'm just saying stuff trying to get to the point where I can properly explain my feelings about this album. Like this is what life sounds like, this is suburban boredom and experimentation, these are the sounds you're told not to make, the art that's too weird the joke that's too abstract. This kind of album can only be a 1 or a 5, so I guess it's a 5 for me!
Creepy, weird, ambitious. I've been a Residents fan for a long time, and to see at least one of their works represented here restores a bit of my faith in this project. The Residents were doing things that no one else would dare to. Nevermind their total anonymity and eyeball masks, the often cartoonish voices, the sinister vibe that pervades these deceptively simple songs, and even messing with song structure; The Residents were fearless in achieving their vision, and found a devoted audience, that includes Les Claypool of Primus and Eric Andre to name a few, in the process.
Bounced on this for hours until I Les'd my Claypool
Sometimes all I want to do is to crack open a can of highly concentrated angst and mania and watch in delight as it sprays over every unfortunate object in its path. This album satiates that desire perhaps a little too well.
There was a time when The Residents were my favorite thing in all the world. I've seen both them and Snakefinger live multiple times, was in the Residents Usenet group, used to tell my kid that his Christmas presents were from Santa Dog... I'm sure I could think of more examples of my complete Residents-induced derangement at the time. So I was wondering why I had to dig this record up on YouTube; I know I had a copy of it at some point. Then I listened to it, and realized that other than "Constantinople," the vocals are rather consistently irritating, aren't they. I don't know why the 1001 guy chose this particular record for the book, since there are better ones from that period like Meet the Residents, Fingerprince, and Intermission from the Mole Trilogy; any of those would have gotten 5 stars from me. Based on that I originally gave Duck Stab a 3, but on listening to it again today, I was overwhelmed with Residents nostalgia, and enjoyed it much more. I also compared it in my head with other records I've since given a 3 to, and realized that surely this is more enjoyable than Depeche Mode or The Who!! It's just a slightly less enjoyable fabulous mess than the rest of the Residents' albums that I have, which probably would get 7 stars. So I regret the error of my ways and have upgraded this album to a 5.
Weird, and in a good way. Glad that something like this is on the list, because I don't need another day of Neil Young in my life. Other reviewers gave this 1 stars because they're pretentious people who can not think outside of conventions for a single iota. This 5 star is dedicated to them.
I knew of the Residents and their impact, Primus's covers, etc. but I hadn't heard an album of theirs until now. Safe to say, I've been sold. Big fan of weird abstract music, and this hits perfectly.
I absolutely and I unironically love this album. Got into them through Primus.
What a cool fucking band! I’m all smiles over here. New to me and excited to dig in.
I don't know how to describe this. I liked it! I'm glad it exists! I dont know that it will go into my rotation unless I need to enter a fugue state. 5 stars.
This album feels cursed and I love it. Also glad I can listen to this in headphones. If it was playing over speakers somewhere I entered, I would probably run away fast.
Det här är så konstigt. Det är så fett. Svårlyssnat? Ja! Kul och spännande? 100%
Weird and fun. Nightmare Halloween funhouse vibes. Late 70’s electronic.
I like meet the residents better but I was convinced ina discussion on the weekend that this sold better and probably should be the one. The residents are great.
Not for everyone in any way. I loved it. Definitely listening to the larger catalogue.
This shit is awesome! I love the whole album, but I think Sinister Exaggerator is my favorite. Definitely going to save this for future listens.
Dadaist approach to music has allowed them to experiment and venture into areas that no other musical artists would dare approach. A complete disregard for melody and structure gives them free reign to explore dissonance, new forms of instrumentation, and (most importantly) humor. The Residents revel in being inaccessible and strange.
I love everything about this.
This is a very subjective 4 that I will bump up to a 5, solely out of spite for the people on this website giving this thing a 2 on average. Listen, I’ve heard some BAD shit on this list. Like, really, really bad shit. This is not a bad album; it’s just a weird album. Even among weird albums, I’ve heard weirder, like Kollaps, Locust Abortion Technician or Trout Mask Replica. With a literal 2 average, I was expecting this to be loud, obnoxious, exponentially strange & so extremely avant-garde that it has no sense of commercial value & exists only as an extreme example of what music itself is. And yet, it’s not that at all. It’s truly just a weird album. It’s totally musically competent, with some genuinely enjoyable soundscapes & some fun production that feels ahead of the curve on a couple of tracks. It’s primarily a rock album, sure, but it dabbles in such a variety of styles that it’s hard to lock this down to any one specific genre. It’s incredibly experimental, & the only time it ever truly borders on obnoxious is the loudness of the electrocution at the very end of the album, but even that’s justified in its usage as a storytelling device, changing this person’s personality like it’s a fucked up psych ward. Lyrically, there’s a lot of nonsensical garbage (positive), but when this album wants to try and tell a story, it knows when to pull back on the oddities and let a bit of fun writing & imagery shine through. Hell, even vocally, I think the weird pitching effects give the whole album a sort of Looney Tunes vibe. It really does feel sort of like a comedy album, so approaching it with a way more fun lens that allows for this sort of experimentation made it all click better. I genuinely am trying to justify why this has an average of 2 at all – maybe my brain can pull more from video game soundscapes & the eccentricities in them. At the very least, my experience with all of the other strange albums on this list lessens how awkward this might feel. For a lot of people, this is going to bounce off of them like a pinball to a bumper. Even then, the third-lowest rated album on the entire site? It’s not even remotely that bad, & at the very least, it’s captivatingly strange, which is more than I can say for a handful of truly dreadfully boring albums. Honestly, it really is worth a listen before you die, because if this doesn’t feel that abrasive to you, then you’ve probably passed the test for the REALLY weird shit on this list, or just weirder shit in general. As far as my experience goes, I genuinely really liked it – it's a 3 at worst, but I’m at a 4 because a few too many tracks felt a bit repetitive & not as compelling as some of the other, weirder ones. However, for the sake of the site, I’m absolutely giving this a 5 to try and skew the ratings back upwards.
Oh this is so good, I love the weirdness of it all. As a big fan of Primus I can totally hear the influence. Faves: the whole damn lot -- it's a journey
Really?! I’d ask “Where have ‘The Residents’ been all my life?” but I think I know the answer - they’ve been travelling the metaverse, aided by a series of psychedelics (starting with pot, through mushrooms, MDMA, GHB and back to mushrooms), experiencing life differently than the rest of us, chronicling it through their soundscapes, which make lost people say either “What the hell are you listening to!?” Or “Jesus, turn that noise off?!” but which i can’t wait to play at my next sit down dinner as the background music, to see just who’s who around the table.
Buster and Glen pull the mask off of high weirdness to reveal another mask. The Residents. The most effructive and the gruuvliest band in all of Universe B.
am i really about to rate this 5 atars? its definitely a 9/10, probably top 3 from the residents. i love them so much. i like weird music already, but something about the residents sound is different and more...warm? Like they're rarely super abrasive. the most "abrasive" one would probably be the executioner. but yeah its definitely weird tonally, lyrically, vocally, and sonically, but also warm sonically. more creepy than noisy and im here for it
Unlistenable. 5 stars
Easily one of the weirdest entries on the list after 600 of them, and far preferrable to some of the basic albums i've had to sit through. Already familiar with The Residents and this album, but it's so fantastically odd that I have to love it. 'Constantinople' is a brilliant song to start it with, and it only continues on the same path from there.
Ingeniously demented
This album is so ridiculous it's fantastic.
This is one of the weirder albums I've heard. I'm glad I was here for it.
I going all in on this. Art with a capital "A". Certainly there are moments of dissonance but it's mostly playful. Rarely has music been both this experimental as well actually listenable (this may not be a popular opinion). Ideal for this list.
Fun in a schizophrenic, fever dreamy kind of way. Not sure it was intended to be an enjoyable listen, but I had a good time
This was the most surprising and delightful album thus far! Totally excited about this pic, as I had never heard of them or about them.
This is so fucking weird and I love it so much.
Pros: * Good for a halloween party * Useful to scary people you don't like on their birthday * or for sending people to hell Cons: * Creepy af * 2 hour dnf 5/5 for art, 1/5 for music
Hilarious and totally mental :D
Phenomenally weird. File this under uneasy listening for its groundbreaking strangeness. Not an album you would listen every day (or maybe you do, which is cool).
How did they make these sounds in 1978? There are lots of pitch-shifting effects throughout. It sounds like there is a lot of tape manipulation going on. All of the instruments are distorted or processed in some twisted manner. Some bits sound totally out of tune. The barely-melodic half-sung, half-spoken vocals, and unusual song arrangements point way forward to band(s) like Primus, and perhaps very early Devo. It's a lot to take in. But the runtime is short. So it's not a chore to run through this a couple of times. That's a good thing, because this gets better with each listen. But be advised; this is a weird, weird record.
Girlfriend absolutely hated listening to this but I enjoyed watching her suffer. It'd horrible to listen to but oddly catchy at times. 5 star experience. 1 star for relisten-ability.
A pointed avant garde effort from Shreveports finest pop combo.
Wow, I didn't want to like it at first, but I realize I love it. Definitely sending Birthday boy to a close friend next year. The Playlist TIDAL suggested after this is spot on.
**Lyrics**: The lyrics in "Duck Stab/Buster & Glen" are cryptic, surreal, and often absurd, reflecting The Residents' penchant for unconventional storytelling. Themes of paranoia, existential angst, and societal critique permeate the album. For example, in "Constantinople," the lyrics describe a bizarre journey through a surreal cityscape, while "Hello Skinny" offers a darkly humorous take on identity and self-perception. The enigmatic nature of the lyrics invites interpretation, allowing listeners to derive their own meanings from the surreal imagery presented. **Music**: Musically, "Duck Stab/Buster & Glen" is a tour de force of experimentation. The album incorporates elements of punk, electronic music, and avant-garde composition, creating a sonic landscape that is both jarring and captivating. The use of unconventional instruments, such as toy instruments and tape loops, adds to the album's distinct sound. Tracks like "The Electrocutioner" and "Sinister Exaggerator" showcase The Residents' ability to create unsettling yet compelling musical arrangements that defy traditional categorization. **Production**: The production on "Duck Stab/Buster & Glen" is innovative and ahead of its time. The album's sound is characterized by its use of lo-fi recording techniques, unconventional sound effects, and layered production. Each track is meticulously crafted, with attention to detail evident in the intricate arrangements and sonic textures. The experimental nature of the production adds to the album's overall sense of unease and unpredictability, creating an immersive listening experience that challenges the conventions of popular music. **Themes**: Thematically, "Duck Stab/Buster & Glen" explores themes of alienation, paranoia, and the absurdity of modern life. The album's lyrics often depict surreal scenarios and characters, reflecting the band's fascination with the bizarre and the grotesque. However, beneath the surface of the album's eccentricity lies a deeper commentary on the human condition and the absurdity of existence. Through its surreal imagery and existential themes, "Duck Stab/Buster & Glen" invites listeners to question the nature of reality and confront the inherent strangeness of the world around them. **Influence**: "Duck Stab/Buster & Glen" has had a significant influence on the development of experimental and avant-garde music. Its innovative blend of punk, electronic, and avant-garde elements has inspired countless artists across various genres. The album's use of unconventional instrumentation and production techniques paved the way for future experimentation in music production. Additionally, The Residents' fearless approach to lyrical and thematic exploration has served as a blueprint for artists seeking to push the boundaries of conventional songwriting. **Pros**: 1. Innovative and experimental musical arrangements. 2. Surreal and thought-provoking lyrics. 3. Meticulously crafted production. 4. Influential in the development of avant-garde music. 5. Immersive listening experience that challenges conventions. **Cons**: 1. May be too avant-garde for some listeners, resulting in a polarizing reception. 2. Lyrics and themes may be too abstract for casual listeners to fully appreciate. 3. Short runtime may leave some listeners wanting more. In conclusion, "Duck Stab/Buster & Glen" stands as a groundbreaking work of avant-garde music that defies categorization and challenges listeners to expand their musical horizons. With its innovative production, surreal lyrics, and thematic depth, the album remains a seminal work in the experimental music canon, continuing to inspire artists and listeners alike decades after its release.
This album is a dark churning avant-garde masterpiece. I find that some bands were clunky in their adoption of synthesized music but the Residents use emergent electronic music to great effect. It give the music a menacing simmering quality that makes the listener feel uneasy. Lyrically this album is similarly disorienting. There are moments that predict later experimental acts and call forth contemporary classical music such as Phillip Glass. I enjoyed every weird second of this album.
I'd known this that is perfect album, like the "It was perfect, just perfect. Everything down to the last minute details." meme. It's a classic 5/5
Sounds like an whackier old school Primus.. I dig. I also feel like it’s my job to offset some of the bad ratings. I am literally here for this insane shit I’ve never heard before!
Nice album
A gem in the "psycho weirdo shit" genre. The Residents are one of the most interesting groups of all time and I love them. Some people might call it artsy bullshit for nerds, but I view them as just a bunch of dudes having fun with silly effects. It's so fun. You never know what in the everloving fuck you're in for when a new song starts. It always keeps you entertained and never bored. I don't know why, but I don't find this scary in the slightest. It's just silly. It's the 70s version of "reverb fart sound effect punjabi remix" memes you would find in the deepest trenches of Youtube. Always a good day when an album like this pops up. To quote my own Kollaps review, "This is what we all deserve to be listening to as we embrace eternal oblivion." Honestly? Fuck it. 5/5. I might have an infatuation with goofy music.
What gets me are the people who are angry or take it all too seriously. I used to have a friend who loved these guys in the 80's and to be honest I didn't understand and thought them silly. I was wrong.
I'm not exactly sure how to classify this, but there was something very appealing to me throughout. Is it really something that I love? Something that I will ever think, "Oh, you know what would fit this mood..."? No, probably not. But is it an experience that made an impression on me and that I might someday think, "What was that weird one that we listened to...I think that I kind of miss it?", yeah, I think that it may be.
Delightfully wacky and wonderfully weird. Loved every freaky minute.
I knew the song Hello Skinny from a mix tape back in the 80s. So I was certainly expecting a weird album. Duck Stab doesn’t disappoint. It is delightfully weird. Never boring, the songs vary in what makes them weird and I was constantly excited to hear what was next. Constantinople must have been a response to or inspired by the song Istanbul (Not Constantinople) by They Might Be Giants. They make a great pairing. A reference to “Elmer Fudd” and “Auntie Maim” in Sinister Exaggerator? You could hear the homage to Green Onions in the short interlude The Booker Tease (see what they did there?!). This album wants me to have a daughter named Semolina (and maybe raise her on Cream of Wheat). How have I lived through 24 years and not played the wonderful Birthday Boy for someone on their birthday?! Weight lifting Lulu? A song called Krafty Cheese that warns plants to be careful? The brilliant dissonant Hello Dolly ending of Hello Skinny? It all ends with the painfully comprehensible yet utterly wackadoo The Electrocutioner. There is a great deal of musical mastery at play here in creating the off-kilter tunes. The Residents’ crazy songs work for me! Yes, most of those around me seem to hate it and I don’t expect it to be tolerated at my next social gathering, but I think it’s terrific! “A little nonsense now and then, relished by the wisest men.” - W. Wonka
This reminds me of the weirder parts from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory, and they focused on expanding the very weird parts. I would love to experience this live on some shrooms tbh
This is the most stupid, dog shit album I've ever heard. I love it. I hate how much I love it.
very cool
Bless the Residents. And Snakefinger, who is annoying for years already everyone in hell/heaven with his guitar riffs from outer space. Residents provided me the Matrix pill, I took the right pill and allowed them to f*uck up my mind forgood, they introduced me to whole new range of music. Like Eskimo music. While babysitting the baby started crying as if he was dying at the spot. I rushed to him and found him sound asleep. Sure, had the album Eskimo on, and there an Inuit child was being born. Or their "Commercial album", 40 (CD 50) catchy songs of 1 minute long. Most 3 minutes songs are just the same, repeated three times. What's the use of the 2nd and 3rd minute? Get on with it. Or their take on the bible, Wormwood. Or their brilliant cover versions of US artists like Elvis, Hank Williams, John Philip Sousa, Jame Brown. True American heroes.
I listened to a residents album before. Ya know, the one with all the members of the beatles with strange looking eyes? Well it was that one. And I didn't remember the listen being a great experience. In fact I remembered it being quite an abrasive one. And I feel like for many members of this site, it will be the same case for this album. But man... what an absolute horror fest siesta this has been. I've been completely sucked into this horrifically grating, disjointed children's novel that the residents have chalked up for us. Albeit. The baby voice they frequent on many tracks is a little too much to bare. But these songs feel like something only a psychotic madman could conjure up. And it's not something that can be so easily recreated. This album is a horrifically terrifying, and occasionally hilarious stab at the music industry standard and I imagine I will be frequently revisiting it... on my own... with headphones... because I can't let people know I listen to this
I think I like The Residents but I'm not sure I'm cool enough to like The Residents.
I'd much rather listen to a bunch of demented, one-eyed space goblins than yet another Steely Dan album. This is funny, has personality, was unique at the time. Deserves its place on this list 110%!
Interesting, enticing, silly, unsettling and timelessly weird. The kind of album that, if you find music interesting, you actually SHOULD hear before you die. Sure as hrell beats another milquetoast by-the-numbers slab of Britpop slop.
I really enjoyed this, it was so different and experimental and strange, but somehow still very interesting and engaging. Seemed both foundational and yet adjacent to the industrial music scene.
Never heard this band or album, but this is great stuff.
perfect for future halloween parties
Insane
The soundscapes to this are brilliant...Krautrock-y in places, although the vocals tip it too much towards performance art for my tastes (like Throbbing Gristle, kept imagining it as a soundtrack for a Vulva performance in Spaced...). I tend to keep 3s for "meh" albums so this is one of those 4s that on another day could have been a 2 but the 2nd half won me over. Weight Lifting Lulu is *almost* 50s Rockabilly, Hello Skinny is *almost* 50s exotica and both steer just the right side of genius/madness.
My whole life, this has been the music that’s going through my head whenever I’m trying to be normal at parties or networking things. I just never knew what it was until I heard duck stab. It was weirdly comforting to know these freaks are out there I agree w Sean’s take that I’ll probably never listen to this again, but I am glad that it exists. Without the threat of someone making something like this, all art would be devalued as an enterprise. Breaking my crusade against collectives in this one instance because I’m guessing these guys didn’t make a TON of money making deranged nightmare lullabies so it might have been difficult to make it work as a straightforward venture
Honestly been craving something a little offensive and controversial, list has been a little snoozy lately. This is unlike anything I’ve ever heard. Is it good? I am not totally sure, but they are absolutely going for it. Reminded me of TV on the Radio (they covered Hello Skinny I read), Primus (Claypool played with them), Pere Ubu energy too. Read that Trey and Fishman (Phish) went to an NYC show in the 90s and said it changed their lives. Another collective, Frank, let em have it.
Literally what the fuck 9/10
It's so so so so so weird. And I kinda like that.
Not my usual cup of tea, but I quite enjoyed that. It's what? Mushroom tea? Oh.
Primus sucks.
What is a delightful bit of weirdness
this brought an absolutely mental energy to getting to stansted airport, spending ages walking to passport control, then finding out all the trains were cancelled and joining a thousand person queue for a national express. I do love this music, The Residents are great, but my god this pranged me out.
If art is supposed to make you feel something, Duck Stab is unsettling and strange. Not for everyone.
While other experimental rock bands rely on dissonant, irritating sounds, this album interesting sounds and melodies that are both dark and goofy. I can see how this influenced later acts like Primus. Also shout out to these Shreveport boys.
weird.... but v v fun
I actually really liked this because of how silly it is. Dark, sinister and cartoonish. I don't think it's one I'd pick up and buy but I wouldn't turn it off. At least it's interesting and funny. Giving it a 4/5 because I thought I'd hate it and was pleasantly surprised. Even the album art is ridiculous.
Ok first off I know this one and I love this one. The Residents are one of the best experimental groups out there. Fucking great album, nice and weird, listen with headphones, good ones.
I know why people may hate this - it's weird, it's psychotic, it's odd and offputting at times. This is pretty much why I loved this. I haven't felt this uncomfortable listening to an album for a long time. Some absolutely demented work on this. I thought it was great. Absolutely compelling.
Polémico: me gustó muchísimo y ver que tiene tan malas reseñas me sorprende, people just can't have fun. No me pareció tan experimental e inescuchable.
I really respect that this exists. A bit hard to swallow at times but overall I enjoyed it.
I always assumed the Residents were a punk band from 80s America. Part of that Minutemen / Descendants / Minor Threat movement. Turns out they’re far from. But I think I might really love this. It’s weird. It’s catchy at times. It’s all over the place. I dont know what the hell it is really, but I like it
Well that was something, hard to believe this sort of stressful noise rock was made in the late 70s, must be incredibly influential on that particularly small genre. Particularly reminded me of that liars record we had, similar levels of noise and dread. It's hard to listen to but there is genuinely good stuff in here, I think the residents could have made a 'good' album and chose to make it sound like this whereas I feel some experimental bands we've had sounded like that due to lack of talent. Regardless of how good it actually is, it's a tough listen and I'd have to be in a very specific mood to want to put this on. That said, Constantinople is stuck in my head. How do you score this? I'm going to go with my gut and say 3.5 but I have no idea if I'd feel this way tomorrow.
8.5/10 This is the kind of weird shit I came here for, I don't think I'm gonna listen to it much but it made more of an impression than a lot of the albums on this list.
This is the first time i ever heard this type of music. I kind of enjoyed this album even though i dont think i will listen to this ever again. I give it 4 stars since this isnt bad music in any way. It is definetly an interesting listening experience. 🤔😁
Experimental, fresh, these are the things I am here for.
Cool! This album. What is likely the strangest album on the list that I've already listened to. I pulled this album four or five years ago through the Rate Your Music recommendation system. I know this site isn't favourable to the album. It's the third lowest-rated pick last I checked, but I honestly remember liking it. Not all of the songs worked, but I remember there being quite a few good moments packed in here - especially on Weight-Lifting Lulu. I haven't listened to this album at all in the time since, so I'm hoping it'll have aged even better now. Here goes. Oh boy, it's all coming back to me. This is right up my alley. I feel like such a contrarian for now liking two of the three lowest-rated albums on the site, but this is honest-to-God my shit. I feel like I'm in a Ren & Stimpy episode while listening along to this music. The heavy atmosphere hanging over all of these tracks is pretty fantastic. I'm not entirely sure how they achieved such an effect, but it's put to great use across all of these tracks. There's also plenty of variation in the pitch and pacing of the backing percussion, which keeps these songs from being cumbersome or repetitive. It's difficult for me to summarise my thoughts on this album beyond the general atmosphere. There's so much crazy shit going on with the finer details, and it's constantly changing while also managing to maintain a satisfying level of cohesion. If I am to take a duck stab, however, I can also commend the songwriting. It's pretty effective. The stressed syllables and catchy vocal hooks give these songs a methodical, predictable feel while also managing to sound unhinged on their own, which helps to reel in the more wacked out aspects of the album. The electronic sounds are pretty good when they're lingering in the background, though they can be a bit much when they're leading the melody. Same goes for those fucking weird, pitched up vocals. Overall, yeah. Great album. I liked this one quite a bit, and that runtime is about perfect for what this music is. There's Weight-Lifting Lulu. She's as beautiful as the day I lost her, which was before we could even meet. Creepy fucking song, but I love it all the same. The instrumental is pretty great. It sounds like the dark inverse of a surf rock tune. The understated guitar sound is fantastic as well as the grating strings and wobbly synths which jolt the piece. There's a real sense of scale to this song with how understated, yet reverberating it is. I feel like the events of this song are happening in a log cabin somewhere in the woods and I'm spying on it all through a pair of binoculars. Book time, though I must preface that I'm letting this album through regardless of whether it's notable. Let's see. "...The Residents possess a singularly unhinged compositional talent that allows them to fuse the weirdest sounds into an even weirder whole." The rest of the book entry is just about how strange and unconventional the music is. Yeah, I'm thinking this is an album I'm grateful for having listened to before I died. I cosign this inclusion. Footnote to add that I've just learned this album was meant to be released as two separate EPs, but Buster & Glen was merged into this LP release after the Duck Stab EP was successful. Come on. Cooome oooooon. You're telling me that the curators included this album and not the US version of Magical Mystery Tour? Duck Stab and Mystery Tour are more or less joined at the hip as far as their nature as two extended EPs is concerned. That isn't even mentioning that this list has three compilation albums ("Your New Favorite Band", "Logical Progression" and "Shalimar / College Girl", the latter of which is a compilation of two Indian film soundtracks which this site erroneously lists as just "Shalimar"). I'm genuinely surprised that they couldn't make an exception for The Beatles with all of the caveats they've made thus far.
Must have been groundbreaking at the time, so 4 stars, but would be 3 or less for me if released now
This sucks in the perfect way. Primus prototype
this album is a definition of a word unhinged strange, odd, very intriguing I really enjoyed it but I'm not gonna come back to it often I'm glad I got to know it though I feel like I've listened to an important piece of art
Brain says five stars, ears say four
Interesante y loco
This was a fun listen cause it was INTERESTING and DIFFERENT and stood out among everything else
Weird. Great. Eccentric. Cool. Odd. Entertaining. Strange. Interesting. Funny. An adventure for the ears and brain.
7/10 Do not bother with this album if you’re looking for hooky choruses, a four piece rock band lineup or another landfill indie album to pop on the pile. It’s experimental, it’s weird and it’s sinister, but if you are willing to open your mind up to something that pushes at the edges of western popular music, then you will find something quite engaging and sonically interesting to whet your palate. The production across the record is an absolute delight, with some really menacing, beefy and interesting pieces of sound design always keeping your ears on edge. There are times when this drifts towards sounding like the nursery rhymes of an asylum and times when it feels like the sinister pulse of a psychological horror film, but there’s also an edge of dark humour that bubbles away under the surface. In some ways it feels like they take themselves both way too seriously and not seriously enough and end up in this hinterland of insanity that steals from both sides of the ledger. There were times during the album where I felt like I was being hypnotically sucked in to the throbbing weirdness and it was sometimes a shame that those moments didn’t go on for longer. Equally, there were times when they didn’t quite pull quite enough at the thread to make it as engaging as it could have been. But this is experimental, oddball music, so they’ve got to try and walk that line to make something both listenable and weird. I’d be inclined to say that many would actually find this unlistenable, but weirdness isn’t for everyone or it wouldn’t be weird, would it? It feels like The Replacements kicked down this particular weird door so that bands like Primus, Ween and Mr Bungle could walk through it, gather up the pieces and create their own blend of slightly more stable lunacy, but it’s often the case that an artist has to push things to the edge so that others can find a safe space inside that boundary. And for that, this album was not only a worthy and engaging listen, but an important one in the development of weird. Constantinople - A dissonant and unnerving but amusing start. It’s certainly weird, but in a brash, “don’t give a fuck” way. There are developments to the sound as it rolls along and I’m left feeling… something. Sinister Exaggerator - Sinister is right, this is menacing, brooding and pulsing. There’s enough of a tonal centre to it that the effect of sitting either side of it works really well to create a creepy and unnerving tone. I actually really like this. It’s not one for day to day listening, but it’s an excellent and intriguing production. The Booker Tease - This almost, almost closes in on being more traditional, but they don’t let it get there. It’s like they’re fighting against musical urges, but it doesn’t take long for them to win the fight. Blue Rosebuds - This is really atmospheric and takes a production turn towards being a bit closer in and more direct tonally. It’s like a deranged nursery rhyme, but the soundscaping and production is really excellent to back that up. Another that falls into the category of weird boundary pushing and I’m really glad it exists. Laughing Song - There’s been hints of Primus before this, but this steps even further in that direction. Again, there’s more of a stable tonal centre that runs underneath, but they do their best to twist it and drag it out of shape and then throw in that layer of farce and absurdity over the top. Bach Is Dead - They develop this less than some of the other tracks. The effected gang vocals are great though. Elvis And His Boss - Oooh, there are some great tones in here. The rhythm is engaging too. The combination of sounds as the track progresses is quite interesting, although the ambience is a bit less engaging to me. Lizard Lady - Another that feels like a Primus precursor in some ways. It’s rhythmically compelling and flips through some interesting tonal changes, particularly between the two vocal styles. It builds and develops as it grows and ends with one hell of a disconcerting and beefy way. Semolina - Another psychiatric ward nursery rhyme. There’s a traditional structure and choice of motifs under there, but they’re tugged away and twisted into something so unsettling and absurd. It’s not my favourite, but the general vibe is so enticing. Birthday Boy - Well I’ve found the song to play at my children’s birthday parties in future. If only I’d know of this when they were younger and I could have got myself banned from every soft play in the area. It’s hilarious, ludicrous and well produced in equal measure. Weight-lifting Lulu - How many ways can I describe or praise the absurdity of this album? There is some glorious sound design at play here, with the production just dragging every element of menace out of the compositions. It just puts you on edge, but then lulls you into a weird space with the fairly innocuous silliness of the vocals. They sound crazy, but not dangerous, but the music says I need to watch my back. Krafty Cheese - Woof, there are some really beefy bits of sound design in here. I like the undulating and persistent rhythm that runs along with that high buzz, but when they drop into that descending bass tone, it’s so good. The effects on the vocals are really cool too. What a great little track. Hello Skinny - The rise and fall of this is cool and quite hypnotic. It’s another where they tread quite close to something more traditional but just tweak it into something weird and then just cycle it round in way that just pulls you in and taps against your brain. The Electrocutioner - They drag things further off the rails here, particularly with the lead guitar that does whatever it wants. This descends into a chaotic mish-mash of sound design that almost becomes hypnotic but doesn’t stick around for long enough before we drift out to a deranged folk song from an alien culture. It’s bafflingly weird, chaotic, non-sensical and delightful.
This is a funny album for me to rate, because I did like it, and I highly respect the early noise rock and experimental music, but it also does feel very silly at times and dismissable - or, at least, I can understand why people would dismiss it. However, I agree people should understand that artists like this, stretching the boundaries of music, is what led/leads to new sounds, even in popular music, just as with any art. There have to be artists doing the "odd" for the "odd" to become the "norm" through more popular artists taking pieces and putting it into pop/rock music.
Full frontal weird that reveals itself as more with repeated listens.
The Residents - Duck Stab / Buster & Glen I love this band and i love their influence on experimental music and avant-garde art that being sai i cant really see myself going back to this album alot but i still love it regardless 8/10 Favourite: Hello Skinny Least Favourite: Laughing Song
Interesting choice of albums to include from The Residents discography. Among the most accessible of The Residents discography with only the Commercial Album being more “commercial”, Duck Stab possesses all of the elements that make the Residents unique among experimental music creators. Creepy electronic music with weird vocals often highly modulated exemplified here by Birthday Boy, The Residents are distinct in their devotion to off kilter often humorous noise experiments. This is not to say that these songs are not freakin catchy once you realize that the repetitive elements that appear in almost every track are designed as ear worms that stick with you long after you’ve taken the album off the turntable. Snakefingers guitar work is exemplary giving the songs an expanded texture making these sound more expansive. Those who were already familiar with the Residents, as I was in 1978 having just graduated high school and having discovered them with the Fingerrince record at Woolworth’s in Whitehorse Yukon a year earlier. Which really begs the question: how did any Residents record end up in the Yukon? WTF? Whomever was the record buyer for that chain was a high risk taker. Anyway, this is a can’t miss record for experimental fans and a great example of the punk rock nature of The Residents subversion of conventional music. Endlessly fascinating, the run of records from Third Reich and Roll to Eskimo is in my mind the best of the Residents discography. I enjoyed later albums, in particular the aforementioned Commercial Album, but this period highlighted the importance of the Residents as a subversive force of avant- garde music that was both engaging and weird as fuck. The Residents followed their own muse and you either hitched your horses to their wagon or you got off. If you went for the ride you were amply rewarded. Duck Stab/Buster & Glen was a good place to board the ride. 4.5/5
Hahahaha this one was a ride. I really could have done without the din of Birthday Boy, but the rest of it was a fine mix of weirdness, creative musicality and general mindfuckery. It would not shock me to find out these people have had encounters with extraterrestrials.
What a fun and bizarre record. 35 minutes of pop rock turned on its head. Not an everyday listen, but a good one.
Changed me life
This is a band that I discovered 23 years ago and felt immediately drawn to their unique approach and sound. But their sound is something that I’m interested in exploring, but I have to be in a specific mood to enjoy the sound (and even then its very particular albums or songs in their catalog). This is an album that I hadn’t visited in almost 20 years, and I was surprised how well I remembered it, and how much I enjoyed this listen. 4 stars might be a bit too high, but 3 doesn’t really capture my feelings or reaction to this relisten.
I ain’t testing any of this when I next get the aux
I flip flopped throughout this album between this being an absolute pile of avant garde dogshit and some of the most brilliant experimental music I’ve heard for years. One of the first albums I’ve listened to as part of this process where I had to put it on play from the beginning immediately afterwards just to make sense of what the hell ive just listened to (spoilers, a second listen didn’t help…). I’m still on the fence as to whether it sucks or it’s brilliant. It definitely made me revaluate what music could be though which, if it has anything going for it, it is that. I hear aleatoric music, free jazz, electronica, industrial and all kinds of things in between - bits of Swans, the Books, Frank Zappa, Arnold Schoenberg, Faust… what a heady mix of styles it was. I’m rating it highly less for how much it appealed to me, and more how this was a musical journey unlike many others.
Wow, discovering such stuff is the reason why I subscribed to this site. This is one of the worst albums in the best possible sense. Experimental, yet minimalist, it sounds weird but is incredibly captivating if you don't give in to the urge to turn it off immediately. The lyrics are ominous, surreal, and mysterious poems that resemble incantations and fit perfectly with these dissonant, witchy soundscapes. I read that no album by The Residents sounds like any other of their albums. So far, I've only listened to this one, and it reminds me of The Legendary Pink Dots in so many ways.
It was quite a unique experience listening to this album, like nothing else I have listened before.
Definitely a must listen for sure. Now that I've heard it I won't be listening to it again. 😂 Regardless it was interesting listen. It didn't feel pretentious and was kind of playful. So I think it's a 4 in my book.
If Magical Mystery Tour was written by a lunatic
Kabaret, szydera, zabawne na krótką metę.
Been a longtime residents fan and am surprised to see them here, and also not surprised to see the ratings. I fully support a band making bizarro music whether it’s an artistic statement or just for the hell of it, and even though I understand most people probably won’t tolerate this I do think the residents make very interesting albums that dare I say are enjoyable
Had not been familiar
"I am gooning to constantinople"? What is bro saying? Damn is this how I find out my goat Bach is dead? Shit sucks man, he would've loved 100 gecs. The music really is pretty interesting, they should just have toned down the vocal manipulation and I bet it would go really hard. Except on Birthday Boy that song is perfect
OK, on one level, a 4 is a pretty hardy rating for such a strange beast. As the first half of the album played, I was at a solid 3, but the deeper I got, the more I appreciated what these guys were up to. I'd bet Ween and Les Claypool (Primus) might both list this band as an influence, and there's a certain something that I can't quite articulate that makes this way more than a novelty goof. I was more and more enchanted as it played. Most notably, as allmusic rates this pretty low in comparison to a bunch of their other releases, I'm inclined to comb through the catalog to find something I like even more. That's another reason it gets the 4 — I am intrigued and plan to discover more.
This wasn't my first Residents rodeo, though this was my first time hearing this particular album. I think this might be my favorite of theirs (so far), though I'm not sure how high a praise that statement is exactly. I don't exactly know how I feel about the Residents' music, though I love how profoundly realized their whole deal is: their unique sound, marketing, and mythos. I know their music strikes a chord in me. It's highly conceptual, thought-provoking, and disturbing. It's certainly hard to dismiss. Sometimes it's quite wonderful. The guitar playing on here was excellent. At the same time, I really have to be in the mood for it. But once you give yourself over to it, it tends to warp the world around you, which is something. Giving this a rating seems wrong, but I'm going with a 4 because I admire their chutzpah.
Gracioso y mal rollero a partes iguales. Buena mierda The Residents.
I never want to listen to this again, that was deeply unsettling. But given that's probably what they were after, they did a hell of a job with it. I mean, if Elvis Costello and Nick Cave purposely made albums to bore the hell out of you, I'd give those higher scores too.
some sort of murderous clown music? something like that? very strange. unlike anything else. i like a cheap synth being used for evil. makes my day more interesting. a pleasure to listen to, really. and if i said i like Buster and Glen more than Duck Stab? deserves to be one of the 1001? yeah and they should have multiple. Meet the Residents, Commercial Album, and Not Available are all also pretty important so... deserves to be one of the bottom 20? i mean i get it. this is a prank album. but it speaks to me. i bet more than any other artist in the bottom 20 they'd get a kick out of being there. i think it's lame that it's so hated but whatever. you gotta piss people off if you wanna be fringe
I swear some of you just hate fun. This isn't even some super artistic avant garde type of experimental music that's a super acquired taste. It's just silly and stupid, and I had a great time listening to this. It doesn't try to be groundbreaking or artistic at all, it's just a bunch of dudes having a great time making a stupid album.
Gloriously weird 5th effort by the American art rockers. Favourite songs are Sinister Exaggerator and The Electrocutioner.
Never listened to The Residents before. Despite several tracks sounding like low grade Zappa out-takes, I kind of liked the overall sound of this album.
Strange and unusual? Yes. Did I find it enjoyable? Oddly, enough also yes.
Dada pop songs at the forefront of weird, which is as advertised for these dudes. Still, what’s impressive is the actual craft put into the sound; it’s all weird and off but on purpose. This is a band that takes its pop craft as seriously as its experimentation, with songs at just the right amount of askew to be off-putting yet deeply listenable. This is a welcome introduction to a legendary band, and excited to dive deeper.
This is an unexpected pleasure, if one that was made possible by taking this in a good mood. In the main this is raw, challenging and just plain weird. I have no idea what goes into the creative/recording process to come up with this kind of music, but I get the sense they did it how they wanted. If I ever want to be truly freaked out I could do worse than go for a walk in the dark listening to this album with headphones on. But I think there’s something rewarding about listening to it and it genuinely made me laugh sometimes it was so weird. Somehow a 4.
There are no good songs on this album. This is a pretty good album.
Perfect segue way into spooky season. American treasure, they are.
Goofy fun. The many hours invested into Trout Mask Replica as a young adult are finally paying dividends!
For the longest time I had no idea Hello Skinny / Constantinople was not an original Primus song, but they couldn't have found a more perfect song to cover. This dude even sounds exactly like Les Claypool. Anyways I find this album pretty funny. It's not the most listenable album ever, but if you just have some fun with it, it can be a good time. I know I am rating all the lowest rated albums high, but they are always the most interesting, and I love weird albums. How can you listen to The Birthday Boy and not have a huge smile on your face. This is probably closer to a high 3 bit I'm going to round up. Low 4.
Distressing and dadaist, ridiculous and rudimentary, Duck Stab is authentic art rock, in the tradition of literary and cultural modernism. Absurder than Trout Mask Replica, it's yet catchier and more coherent, something like the neat and thought-out strangeness of De La Soul. The lyrics are grotesque but have me laughing in a real way: 'Your heart is like a silken sponge / That calls saliva love'; 'But he soon found out / That she had the gout / And often would wink underwater'; 'Conspicuously alcoholic, flicks his tongue at me!' It's by no means a perfect record - it's ultimately too annoying and too cockamamy for me to have a deep regard for it - but it is original, and I can appreciate it for what it is: a curt dosage of telepathic eccentricity.
This just goes to show that you don’t need musical acumen or a single shred of talent in order to create something delightfully weird and fun. Follow your dreams, kids.
what if The Band were a collection of Beefheart-loving mental patients? chaotic good. good weird. weird i can believe in.
Absolutely loved this weirdness. 10x avant garde anti-establishment psychotic nonsense peering over the fence at you. I crave more of this.
The tone throughout is decidedly demented and unsettling, and yet I found myself enjoying most if not all of it. The songs are intentionally weird, but don't (to me at least) feel try hard in that direction. They are interesting and well-produced, intermixing various elements to create a sense of tension. Sometimes that comes from mixing unsettling, horror adjacent instrumentals with innocuous or even bright vocals. Other times, it comes directly from the demented nature of the vocals. More often than not it derives from use of weird off-center instruments and electronic effects combined with unnatural vocal production (Krafty Cheese and Constantinople are both good example of this). For better or worse, this album had me engaged all the way through. I'd say it was split into roughly 3 categories: slightly off-kilter; demented; and straight up WTF. The majority fall into the generic "demented" category with varying shades of enjoy-ability. The best (or at least most memorable) here are Blue Rosebuds, Constantinople, and Krafty Cheese. Blue Rosebuds reminds me a bit of Thundercat at his most psychedellic -- like his pairing with Mac Miller on some Faces tracks. I never realized Primus' take on Constantinople was a cover. More amazingly, Primus' rendition is somehow more grounded. Nonetheless I enjoy the original. Weight Lifting Lulu is probably the most "normal" song on here (only real competition is Booker Tease). It plays more like a post-punk song than anything else. And truly escaping into WTF territory are the likes of Lizard Lady and Birthday Boy -- both of which feature some of the weirdest lyrics(?) vocal features(?) of the album. I wouldn't listen to this with great frequency, but I'll be damned if I didn't enjoy it. High 4 for me!
Feels like this was recorded in hell (non-derogatory)
Bizarre and a bit disturbing, but nonetheless enjoyable, this is maybe the Residents album I like most. Feels like mutant blues and distorted nursery rhymes.
Bonkers but I liked it
So I’ve heard of the Residents for a really long time, obviously their iconography is pretty classic, and I’ve certainly read their Wikipedia before, because their whole “thing” is just so fascinating! But this was absolutely my first time pressing “play” on any of their music. And you wanna know what? I thought this was by far the most accessible “avant- garde” music encountered for this project thus far. A lot of the songs are weird, but still pretty tuneful and melodic. There’s hooks and choruses and sometimes it can be a little challenging, but still sounds like music. It reminded me of proto-Primus or TMBG. It’s not my favorite thing in the world, but I could genuinely see myself returning to some songs from this album, plus the band is just so influential and important. I’m scoring this high!! (Also they’re smart enough to keep it short! Their experimentations rarely go over 4 minutes in length!)
this was so horrible that i somehow love it?? i dont even know what to say
mfs on this website when they have to listen to something actually experimental and unique instead of just the beatles and pink floyd: 😨😨😨😨😨😱😱😱
My thought process: "Ooh, I'm getting some good punk tod- why is it rated so low? Oh, this isn't The Descendents or The Replacements..." So anyways, this is a weird one. It's a Looney Tunes horror show by way of Primus, and Bugs Bunny is on LSD or something (well, the other way around. This is Primus before they existed. Insane to imagine there is a less accessible Primus). Maybe I'm just in the right kind of bad mood today, but for some reason this is hitting? Is it something I'd ever listen to in my free time? Absolutely not. Will I ever go back to it? Probably not. Like, I get why this is one of the lowest rated albums on the list, and it kinda deserves it. It's not a comfortable listen, and I don't think there is a single pleasant sound on this thing. Everything is screechy, dissonant, high pitched horns and electronics and intentionally bad vocals. But I'm weird and can enjoy uncomfortable things if its got a weird horror vibe, albeit a messed up cartoon version. I'm kinda afraid I'm overrating because its rated so low, but I kind of like this thing also? It's weird.
This is like if musique concrete met my nightmares. It's kinda great. But this could easily shade into noise if I were in the wrong mood.
Bug music that set the way for They Might Be Giants that no other art rock band could have done
a short and pleasant listen 👍
Totally get why this is dividing reviewers. Given one cursory listen, out of context, in the middle of a thousand albums, an unsettling piece of Dadaist performance art is almost certainly going to sound like a hard pass. But if you've got the time, go read chapter 13 of the post-punk bible, Simon Reynold's Rip It Up and Start Again, on cabaret noir and theatre of cruelty in post-punk San Francisco, and then give it another go.
Really weird. Certainly requires another listen.
I am unfortunately the audience for this one
This is certainly an odd one. I don’t think it’s as bad as it’s rating on here. More I listen the more I’m liking it. It’s the right amounts of catchy and strange.
Fascinatingly terrible. Fuck it, this is kinda awesome.
Pretty remarkable, sounds as if it comes from the 00s. Quite abrasive sounding and bizarre. “Laughing Song” and “Birthday Boy” are the musical equivalents of a nightmare while “Blue Rosebuds” and “The Elektrocutioner” are in their own way pretty. Loved it
Super creative and bold.
Weird album. From the opening notes I thought it was going to be too much. But I actually listened to it a couple of times and it grew on me. I would listen to it again, it is just nice to have some oddness and eccentricity every now and then.
The Residents are the missing link between The Beatles and The Butthole Surfers.
Short and fun, but maybe a bit strange in parts. I think it might be a grower on a second listen, and it reminded me a little of the Country Teasers.
While this might not be the most popular album on this site (Seriously, third lowest average rating?), I still enjoy these wonderfully strange tracks nonetheless. 4.5 bumped down to 4.
Kinda like this one. It's very Primus Will I listen to again: 75%
Fun. Weird.
Heard before counter: 4/5 Interesting experimental art shit. Brings me back in time, listening to The Residents, playing Patapon, eating eyeball gummies. I first found it in a music iceberg picture well before it became a youtube thing. I expected the lower layers to be Depressive/Suicidal/Sadistic/Surprise/Service Black Metal, and it was mostly that, but among it was this gem
It’s taken me a long time to review this- so different. Fees like Zappa meets Tom waits meets psilocybin. Not sure when I’d listen to this but will definitely revisit so I can embark some of the layers.
Well that was gloriously, f***in' weird, although from reading about the Residents it sounds like the album is one of the most accessible ones. I've been a bit of a fan of avant-garde jazz before so this felt fun and enjoyably odd.
Woah, this band clearly influenced Primus. This was really cool to hear. Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5
It's a very very strange album, but I must say that I kinda like it. It may be that I am so close to the end of the 1001 list I'm reaching the enlightenment of the book authors. (probably I'm just tired, it's almost 6 PM)
Lotta lyrics
Sorry, I think I took too much LSD. Did I listen to music or fall through the fabric of reality? Giving this a score is akin to rating the first time you have a hangover. Unlistenable but purely unique. It's a 1, it's a 5, it's an existential crisis.
What an oddity. Very original and unhinged, it somehow works! But I won't listen to it every week. 3.6
so unique, definitely needed to hear this at least once before I died.
so bad that I circled around to loving it. this is so ass but in a cool way. like if came out now it'd be lame and try-hard but because it was 70s this feels like it would be the 70s equivalent of showing a Victorian era child a 100 gecs song. honestly 100 gecs is feels like a pretty apt comparison, its surreal and doesn't take itself too seriously. feels almost as if its a exaggerated satire of modern music at the time (particularly psychedelic music from like the 60s/70s). all im saying is that some of yall are weak. that being said, i'll never relisten to this unless i want piss off my friends next time they put me on aux
The Residents are one of the most cleverly disguised pop bands to ever exist. If you don’t rock along to “Constantinople”, are you really any fun?
Awesome experimental avant-garde album, with tons of different influences, electronic music, punk, surf. Weird and great!
I mean, you do have to be in the mood for this brand of nonsense, but it’s some real delightful nonsense. We’d not have Primus or Ween without this band, I’d wager. Thanks, Residents. You’re a lot of fun.
This may surprise you, but I really liked this. Even though there were lots of short tracks. Unlike a previous submission with this format they all felt complete. Some were not so good but in general a good album.
Oh my god this album is fucking weird. I really like it though. Can hear Les Claypool all over this album, so it must've been a huge inspiration for him. Somehow The Residents make these alien sounding songs catchy, fuckin nuts
This was very unexpected, but a lot of fun.
So cool I’m a huge fan wow
wow reminds me of r. stevie moore, the outsider music that is just so compelling to me at least. Really love this and hope to come back to it.
Nothing resembling normal, this album feels like a drug-fueled ride through the land where discordance and art house meet. Not to be listened to often but certainly see where it should be listened to at least once.
So these dudes were brown before brown. This could easily be a lost ween album. I bet they found inspiration here. Now to figure out who turned the Residents on in the 60s.
A new discovery for me, interesting stuff, being a Zappa fan this hit the mark for me ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Really enjoyed this. I could really hear the influence on contemporary bands like Fat White Family. Experimental and odd but also playful and catchy.
Weird and wonderful…and thankfully quite short.
Look. They’re clearly fucking mental. But they’re having a very nice time and I enjoyed being a part of it.
I'm sorry I can't hate this. I've heard so much music, that when I stumble across something that sounds this unique, and just flat-out surreal, I have to praise it. I really like the art behind the Residents, they have a pretty cool anonymous thing going, and when skimming through their music videos, I was happy to see that their colorful visual aesthetic matches their dream-like sound. This is real "dream pop"...last I recall, my dreams aren't pleasant and drenched in reverb, they're nonsensical, surreal, and, more times than not, inspiring - kinda like this album. Don't get me wrong though, I kind of wanted this thing to end about halfway through. But the journey was an intriguing one, even if choose to never embark on it again. The best songs were 'Semolina', 'The Electrocutioner' and 'The Booker Tease'
What a ride.
I’m a fan! I like these oddities on this list. Quirky nursery rhymes for adults. There’s enough holding these together to move past the feeling that’s it’s just a bunch of sounds.
really interesting
3.75
I've heard of The Residents but haven't listened ty this album. Quirky and brilliant. I really liked it.
Too much synthesizer sound...I'm not a fan to those stuffs. But the arrangements are interesting. Quite Experimental. Honestly, I don't know what they're doing for half of the time, almost like a troll but I like it, I enjoy the unpredictability. And its so chaotic and 1980s horror picture show vibe, I love it! Isn't the 3rd track come from a Led Zeppelin song, How Many More Times? I recognize the bassline...? Other than that I think it's a close 4/5! I had a lot fun with this album.
Ég hef gaman af þessu og þeim.
It's a bit like Willy Wonka on LSD or something. There's definitely a goofy, slightly spooky, Saturday morning cartoon vibe, and ya know what, it's actually quite a giggle. The Constantinople video is as mad as a hatter and my two six year old boys found it hilarious. I do quite enjoy music that is different or strange or spooky. What takes this to another level is how it's so consistently weird and unconventional. But I can totally understand why most people would hate this and even I would need to be in the right mood.
Is Les Claypool in this band?? I’m so confused. Primus and Ween owe this band a beer. I love the repetition, the sing songy trances, and the childlike approach to dark tones. Weird? Sure. Bizarre? Definitely. Cool, unique, and not boring? Absolutely!
I'm not lying when I say this might just be the most entertaining album on the list so far
Not as bad as it’s made out to be
odd and interesting but as with many "experimental" groups it is not always clear what is actually experimental about it and what is perhaps just an intention to be annoying. It would help a lot if experimental groups always made a manifesto even if they never followed it.
Could one describe this as 'slipstream music'? Inasmuch as it bears some resemblance to pop, albeit refracted through a prism darkly. As such, this peculiar collection - with elements of Silver Apples, the weirder end of Sparks and perhaps a dash of Beefheart - can feel like a challenge, in more sense than one. Yes, a difficult listen - but also a genuine confrontation with pop orthodoxy. In my view, perhaps the Residents are closest in spirit to the writer BS Johnson, whose experimental fiction involved peepholes cut into pages, or books that could be assembled (and read) in any chapter order. The Residents have made albums of 'commercial' music (literally, thirty second pearls of sound advertising imaginary products); they've mashed together the Beatles and the Third Reich in an unholy mixtape; and produced one of the most pungent concept pieces I've heard, 'Eskimo', which at times sounds like arctic ice shelves colliding with each other. A triumph of art and intellect over beauty and light; but a triumph, regardless.
Ok, this fucking rules. I had Roxy Music yesterday and was bored as fuck. I got through this twice and was transfixed. It demands your attention by being absurd and funny. There is even the odd bit of melody thrown in for good measure. I imagine if aliens landed and only had 70's radio waves as a starting point and tried to make an album it would sound like this. As a cherry on top, it was my sons 8th birthday yesterday and i played him birthday boy and he howled with laughter. On the other hand, my wife asked me to turn it off as it was giving her an anxiety attack. Good art makes you feel something and this is good art!
It's like being booted from one bad dream to another. Just a series of terrible sounds experiments. I love it, it's pure art. 9/10 Strange noise.
Holy shit dude
Experimentelle adhs musik
Weird, funny, somewhat scary
How can someone come up with this in 1978?? This shit is wild! Seriously, I have no idea how it got on this list, but I'll take it!
This record is another world. What the hell was that? So surprising and wild!
i love this for more than its pure weirdness, but that's the overriding factor - it's just so out there, but it manages to be out there without being exhausting, which is a FEAT. i mean, it's easy to be weird, right? but a lot harder to be weird and not boring - and they definitely manage it with this album.
WTF? Then awesomeness. I deeply enjoyed the surrealism of this album and will definitely come back to it.
wild...
Delightfully weird
Undeniably off-kilter yet not challenging, with an equally undeniable rhythmic and melodic sensibility lurking just beneath the strange surface.
A guy in Spinal Tap once said, “It’s such a fine line between clever and stupid”. I don’t really know where this falls, but I do know that three days ago I listened to the eighth Elvis Costello record on this list so far, and two days ago I had the eleventh Radiohead record, and listening to the Residents after that made them sound like the cleverest thing to ever exist. Probably a 3 but bumping it because I’m a crank.
