B.B. King
2/5
it's a cloudy afternoon, mid-july. about this time you listen to your daily album of culture. (it is a prerequisite of death.)
what's today's album? "live at the regal" by b.b. king. it's got a rating of 3.7 and it's a blues album. if anything can show you the full potential of the blues, surely this will be it...
you start the album. they introduce the King of the blues himself. a song plays. it sounds like a typical blues song, but a bit upbeat. pleasant enough. it passes, and your majesty announces the next song, a "real oldie."
it starts playing. it sounds familiar... it's like the last song but slow... a real oldie indeed. all the way from a couple minutes ago.
another song plays. the Blue King proclaims, "it's my own fault, baby!" and the crowd absolutely ROARS at this. you listen. wait a second. something's strange... this sounds familiar... that's it! it's the same song you just listened to, but with different words! you can't fool me mr king.
time for the next song. "while we're reminiscing here" mr King (of the blues) says. yes, reminiscing over the last three songs a.k.a. the last one song. "i'd like you to pay attention to the lyrics, not so much my singin or the band" im sure you would mr King (of the blues). but you cant pull the wool over my eyes. and so the song plays... again
another (the same) song plays, an upbeat variation this time. it passes and the next song is introduced. "what do you say we bring him on, ladies and gentlemen? the great b.b. king!" little did they know they'd already brought him on. infact, he's already played five songs(one song)! the sixth variation passes.
time for the next song introduction. "we wanna go way back. WAY back." they can't trick me, that's just like how track 2 was introduced! it plays. one could describe this variation of The Blues Song as "dynamic." it is the longest version of The Blues Song on the album. it ends.
off-topic, but if there's anything you can say about mr King (of the blues) it isnt that he's impolite. he always says thank you to his screaming adoring fans. thank you too, mr King. the (next) song plays. it's pretty upbeat and the brass is excited. it is a fun variation, it makes itself stand out a bit. the High King of Bluesia thanks his subjects and the next variation begins.
it sounds like the others. mr. The King tells his subjects to applaud his band and help the poor because he is a noble and just monarch. time for the next track.
alright, the last track stands out from everything else. the last track is a gift. the last track is the King's luxurious gift to the commonfolk who support his kingdom. they thought it was impossible. they thought it couldnt be done. a second song on the album.
while i was listening i decided to look up "best albums of 1965" and see what was going on those days, let's see...
- The Who were born, good on them! that'll be a future roll from the generator
- the Beatles release Rubber Soul, the 17th-highest rated album on the site as-of-reviewing. is it fair to compare?
- dylan's gone electric, that rascal! how does it fee-eeellll..
- the Byrds release the album Turn! Turn! Turn! containing the song Turn! Turn! Turn! i like that one
- The Temptations Sing Smokey! neato, the version of My Girl that most people know, among other things
- the Beatles also release Help! man they were busy...
- a Charlie Brown Christmas! nice, got an iconic piece of christmas history on that. not what i expected to see
well looks like 1965 was an alright year!
the details of my experience of this album come nearer to their close, and judgment approaches.
"but the blues were foundational to all of rock music!" aint getting founded in 1965, that's for sure
all in all i can't be a critic. i simply don't understand. i don't understand The Blues. it's like an episode of the Twilight Zone condensed into a music genre. this is Groundhog Music. help me. 1966 is just around the corner and it's coming in with a bang. you need to be more prepared than this.

im not a frequent metal listener, i know some things here-and-there that i like, but its also a fairly unexplored area for me
now metalheads can get on my nerves a little, oh someone gave a 1/5 to my indietronica dreamcore cosmical lofi whateverwave and all they said was "boring", go to their page and theyve reviewed 700 albums, favorite artists sepultura, metallica, gave ten 5/5s and half of them are to bands that sound like ancient gods

eccentric 80s gothism, it was alright and it has that one song

exciting, dark, and a little insane, it lives up aesthetically to its title
The Smiths
4/5
There Is a Light That Never Goes Out is top-tier and the rest is pretty good

i would also like to place an order for more trombone solos
also also if i were this album i would run on a few songs less
Kings of Leon
3/5
cool to listen to and i can enjoy it though it still shows that a couple hits doesn't make an album worth listening
first and last tracks are cool too

3/5
fun blokes who don't stick out too much but they enjoy what they do ay

Roxy Music
3/5
it sounds like two parts influential and one part something that I want to actually listen to now, but it's cool and interesting
The Afghan Whigs
3/5
ive heard time and time again that the album list has a strong british bias so when i saw that this unknown, british-sounding band was actually american i kinda got goosebumps

Pavement
4/5
a fun 2000s indie rock album over half a decade before the 2000s were invented. respect!
Jeff Buckley
4/5
a nice 90s pretty-rock experience! sometimes sounds like radiohead-before-radiohead-existed if radiohead-before-radiohead-existed existed after radiohead existed.
Barry Adamson
3/5

4/5
pretentious but in a kinda-right-about-it kind of way

4/5
a work of decent beauty overshadowed by their other albums

a nice sound though the hit of the album stands above the rest

2/5
this album did not make it to timelessness

Eagles
4/5
pleasant listening from the hits to everything inbetween

The Black Keys
4/5
if you like what theyve got, theyve got extra
consistent album of fun modern blues-pop flair
Bob Dylan

he has wisdom and a voice beyond his years. what i mean to say is that he sounds like a 20-year-old senior citizen.
hes got a few nice songs but its not enough for me to really get the hype
The Byrds
3/5
pretty pleasant country tunes. not revolutionary but i liked the music
Ute Lemper
3/5
i looked at the wikipedia page and this album is like, the 1001-albums-you-must-hear-before-you-die equivalent of the Avengers (it also shows that much on the cover but im not observant)
if you told me nick cave wrote the whole album and the lead singer was just nick cave with a voice changer i would probably still believe you
Talking Heads
4/5
pretty sick for 1978, good album for people who enjoy fun
Sex Pistols
4/5

Louis Prima
4/5
honking melodically with the full zest of life

2/5
this album has well and truly informed me that bed bugs is infact mean and evil, and if there was any doubt, solidified as fact that they sure don't mean me no good

neo-protestwave indie rock, cool enough listen
Bob Dylan
4/5

Jane's Addiction
3/5
nice 80s rocker held back by the fact that its from 1990, fun listen
Janet Jackson
3/5
i do like an album with a lot of bells & whistles though the music can be overconsistent perhaps
R.E.M.
4/5
pleasant comfort-food-rock album
Count Basie & His Orchestra
3/5
this can only have been the hardest album cover of its time
Cornershop
3/5
an odd one but it was interesting enough
Nirvana
4/5
its good but live albums are hard and weird to judge like this with all of the others. how much more do you have up your sleeve mr dimery
Red Hot Chili Peppers
4/5
they told me they sounded like Californication but they never mentioned they sound like Parallel Universe
i thought they were supposed to be uncool

legitimately sick for 1994
Siouxsie And The Banshees
4/5
nice spookycore vibes
Brian Eno
4/5
the man who pioneered yoga playlists

Coldplay
4/5
it feels like the ultimate style-over-substance album where even though a lot of the songs didnt stick out from eachother, it still felt more like a special experience than an album of songs
i like its aura
Buena Vista Social Club
3/5
fun listen, strongest at start
John Prine
3/5
this is like bob dylan if he found a haybale
Goldfrapp
3/5
what a strange eclectic album
i got to immerse in diverse experiences like
- the music that plays when the villain in a n64 game has dialogue (oompah radar)
- whatever human is (human)
i thought this album was fairly more interesting than the other goldfrapp album i received
Cat Stevens
4/5
the sound of a nonthreatening environment
comfy music with a couple big standouts
Fugees
3/5
im not really a lyrics-first music-second person usually, though like burger king, have it your way indeed
it comes with some cool vibes and a likeable charm

4/5
a work of art that immerses you into its world
Kid Rock
3/5
**DISCLAIMER: this reviewer does not share the views presented by this artist**
**DISCLAIMER: this reviewer does not share anything at all with kid rock, be it in the physical or the abstract**
this is pretty cool, im enjoying it! i wish i wasnt. God I wish I wasn't.
Maybe one day I'll reincarnate and then I'll hate this album. In this life I failed. I'm sorry music. I'm sorry society.
so with that being said im thinking a good 3
R.E.M.
4/5
fun album to listen to, very different for 1987
Mercury Rev
4/5
quirky and unique, first track is a standout
Joni Mitchell
4/5
pretty music with pretty words

4/5
a thrill throughout, much more than just the title track
not the biggest revolution but it's consistently enjoyable
Eurythmics
3/5
they dont have much to say do they
the hit is still a fun song atleast, and its a relatively early entry into the 80s synthpop universe
Taylor Swift
4/5
i love relationship melodrama
Radiohead
4/5
theyre so cool
Al Green
3/5
undeniably pleasant and some standout moments
King Crimson
4/5
a thrilling unique work of prog rock history
The Killers
5/5
this is my vibe
Yes
3/5
i am trying to balance my respect for the music with my depths of not caring for it
this is the kind of vibe that made "prog rock" carry negative connotations for me growing up
my respect says this is respectably a 3/5
Hole
4/5
very youthful energy, fun rock music
Morrissey
4/5
pretty fun, i like it when he goes ah ha ha-ha-ha-ha
Nas
5/5
it's not typically me to judge music just by the lyrics but i can put respect on them, the backing production felt pretty cool (especially for 1994,) and overall i was decently captivated from track to track
Leonard Cohen
4/5
a beautiful work, from the first couple of songs i was already excited to receive more of his albums in the future
Dinosaur Jr.
4/5
seems pretty sick for 1987, a good listen
Janis Joplin
3/5
neato, some cool songs, heard of janis joplin but didnt know she was kinda soul-y
Paul Simon
4/5
fun artsiness to hold the people over until graceland
John Coltrane
4/5
fancyfancy, kind of have to rate this one more on respect than personal appreciation but it was pleasant
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
sounds like joy division with vampire energy
Miles Davis
3/5
are we dealing in compilation albums now mr dimery? i see, i see
apparently its a very important album for the history of cool jazz, this is one instance where i dont know enough and i have to judge it as it stands, and it sounds like a decently pleasant jazz album for its time
The Fall
4/5
absolute kook music
The Verve
2/5
i got to the track "lucky man" and my instinct mental response was "not if im listening to this album"
a couple to a few interesting songs and a lot of numbness
The Police
3/5
message in a bottle is pretty cool
Massive Attack
3/5
makes for a peaceful morning, some pretty interesting tracks
Bebel Gilberto
3/5
pleasant, not much to say about it
John Grant
2/5
the lyric writing feels like why i havent really gotten into a divine comedy album despite liking some of their songs, the music tastes as full of flavor as sparkling water
maybe i just have too much experience and too many preferences when it comes to 2000s-2010s sort of indie stuff
Wilco
4/5
pretty, magic, unique, special, maybe front-heavy
album i hear about and see a lot but havent heard until now, gives warm vibes
Morrissey
4/5
a good and interesting listen, he has a fondness for rolling his Rs
The Crusaders
2/5
this sounds more like i picked out something completely random from a list of every 70s jazz album, then i could say "well what did you expect"
but no, this is one of the 1001 most essential albums ever made
everytime i listen to an album that i like and it isnt on this list i'll be thinking "this album died so that street life by the crusaders could take its place"
why is it so backgroundy why does it taste so much like nothing
so that being said it sounded pleasant, 2/5
Wu-Tang Clan
4/5
charming bit of fun
Anita Baker
3/5
pleasant listenable 80s pop hits
Beatles
4/5
basically they won 1965, how many more years can they just win outright?
The Flying Burrito Brothers
3/5
its like half pretty normal but pleasant country stuff and half cool interesting and different tracks, strange album but cool music
Supergrass
3/5
strong start, weaker second half
fun album made by people who sound like they get up to antics and shenanigans
Stan Getz
3/5
ratatouille dvd menu music album
Snoop Dogg
4/5
slick, sounds pretty cool for its time
ABBA
4/5
a pack of peppy tunes
abba has a pleasant unique vibe
Johnny Cash
4/5
he is a fun person and the songs are a fun listen. i am arrested by his charm
Peter Gabriel
4/5
mercy street is underrated
Eminem
4/5
that was pretty edgy
Amy Winehouse
3/5
decently pleasant and consistent album but track 7 just reminds me i would much rather listen to Ain't No Mountain High Enough than any individual song from this
Rehab and Back To Black are nice, there's just nothing that satisfying here
everyone seems to love this though, i guess i really don't understand the hype, i feel like i would get much more joy listening to most of the music from 4 decades earlier that inspired it
Richard Hawley
3/5
forgettably pleasant
The Smashing Pumpkins
4/5
the pumpkins are always welcome, i love how all the edge and grit in most of the music makes something sweeter and softer like Disarm have that much more weight
5/5
"RAIN" AND "AGAIN" DONT RHYME NOEL
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
they have a very special one-of-a-kind comforting atmosphere, what else is truly like them
the first few songs are especially pretty
Goldie
3/5
im not studied up on the complete history of dnb but for 1995 this seems like a cool collection of tracks
feels cool, feels fun, doesnt feel too trapped in the past to appreciate
Badly Drawn Boy
3/5
eccentric one, Once Around the Block is neat but other than that its not my favorite, maybe interesting for its time though
A Tribe Called Quest
4/5
has aura. cool vibes to the end
pretty peak for 1991 and something i enjoyed getting to listen to
4/5
im not sure about my feelings on a bob dylan live album coming up on this site because im going to hear like 99% of the songs from the original albums when they roll later anyway
still cool though bob dylan went electric everybody heck yeah and stuff
The Cardigans
3/5
vaguely interesting, feels a bit weird-quirky-style over substance
the lunar vibe comes through on the iron man cover in particular
Alanis Morissette
4/5
fun 90s rocker
Happy Mondays
3/5
i had fun and thats what counts
The Chemical Brothers
4/5
some of these 90s electronica albums just come with aura, the chemical brothers are pretty sick
Ray Charles
3/5
perfectly alright but i wouldnt mind something more interesting or unique
if this is what you feel like listening to today i wont stop you robert dimery
Arcade Fire
4/5
exciting to listen to after hearing Funeral, this is an ELO-meets-springsteen adventure that never stops sounding full and sweet
maybe not as much stand-outs for me to latch onto as Funeral but it was a good listen
The Young Gods
4/5
theyve created a brand new human experience
and when its not a brand new human experience it just reminds me of 2003 killing joke (i havent heard any killing joke from before then so idk how different it is)
so far 1001 shows off some fun metal albums and i get to learn more about my own tastes
The Good, The Bad & The Queen
3/5
dear mr dimery
you should totally add plastic beach instead of this. that would be really mega awesomely-sauce.
yours in spirit, me
Ella Fitzgerald
4/5
someone already made the comment calling it "59 Love Songs". someone already made the comment informing people the line "why are people gay" is from Love Is Sweeping The Country. i just dont think there's that much left for me to mention. i guess all i have left to say is that "Embraceable You" sounds like the benevolent good-sided counterpart of Despicable Me
over the course of 3+ hours you can get the sense that the album is a little overly-consistent, most of the tricks in the bag came from the same carton of eggs
still it's an albumful of good music, a pleasant showing of 50s lounge jazz, and as far as genres to listen to 3+ hours of go, it couldve been a lot more intimidating than this
perhaps, just maybe, this collection of songs is why the people are gay after all
Malcolm McLaren
3/5
white people
the more i read about this man the more i do not like this man
fun album
Sam Cooke
4/5
the artist in the classic soul sphere that i personally vibe with the most, his music is comfy and satisfying to listen to and he has a distinct charm
this one is extra upbeat, same charm and enjoyability
frankly he cooks
LCD Soundsystem
5/5
magical works, lcd soundsystem are one of a kind, All My Friends and Someone Great are hypnotizing
Earth, Wind & Fire
4/5
mood lifter music, majority of the songs are cool and the less-important ones are still pleasant
Hookworms
3/5
reminiscent of phoenix, of montreal, passion pit and the like from around a decade prior, but with less to stand out or stick in my mind.
however, they are not on the list, and this album is, for it is sufficiently british and sufficiently unknown. robert dimery is pleased with this
im still biased towards this sort of music though so its cool
on that note, after this album ended i successfully searched for the song "heimdalsgate like a promethean curse" from sheer memory without any errors. i felt proud of this. just wanted to add that.
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
3/5
somewhere in this i heard the line "you couldnt have done this if you knew what you were doing"
i felt that, brother
Leonard Cohen
3/5
peaceful, somber, and interesting
Finley Quaye
2/5
makes me feel tired, especially when i check to see how much of it is left for some reason
this album was co-produced by a man named kevin bacon
isnt that a marvel
Beastie Boys
4/5
if they could only all be as interesting as A Year and a Day...
Beatles
4/5
the space between sgt pepper and abbey road that they filled out with basically whatever they felt like
maybe underwhelming relative to the rest of the beatles' significant works from the second half of the 60s, but its still the beatles and it is good
David Bowie
5/5
never a dull moment with this guy
Charles Mingus
4/5
decently compelling jazz album
Taylor Swift
4/5
it can get to all feel the same sometimes but beyond that its fun
Prince
3/5
quite eccentric, sometimes interesting, occasionally possibly memorable
i think i dont get it
Jane's Addiction
4/5
pretty sick
fun when it was rocking most of the way through, fun when they cooled it down a little for Jane Says, fun when whatever Thank You Boys is happened
Napalm Death
3/5
guitar riff starts
drums kick in with a fast repetitively alternating beat
"ORURORURORURORURAHHHHHH"
the album moves on to the next song, repeating the cycle. the process occurs 28 times in total
wikipedia says the album features political lyrics about capitalism and the environment and stuff, to which i like to imagine it took a group of researchers multiple years to analyze these recordings and decipher the words on this album (if i am to believe wikipedia's information that there are enough words on this album to warrant deciphering)
i had fun
Dexys Midnight Runners
3/5
neutral-tasting album with a couple interesting songs
this is the third album by the deoxyribonucleic runners i have heard on this site. if your love for them is this pure and true, why don't you make it official and become Robert Dimery-Rowlands? i will clap at the ceremony, though it may be harder for me to follow along because i do not speak british.
Beastie Boys
4/5
delinquent beats
Rufus Wainwright
3/5
pretty sound, songs that i moreso want to enjoy than actually do
little did the world know it would just take a few years for him to hone his skills for the meet the robinsons soundtrack so he could peak
3/5
maybe even a little old for its time, but an enjoyable listen
Yes
3/5
people call a lot of things dad rock but i cant imagine thinking of something more fatherly than Yes if i tried
so in the spirit of me having now listened to every Yes album on the list, i will write my thoughts in the character of a fatherly man leaving a youtube comment
SAW THESE GUYS IN CONCERT 19 72 . AMAZING THEY SHREDDED
YOU COULD NOT MAKE MUSIC LIKE THIS THESE DAYS .BUT THESE BOYS KEEPT IT REAL MY DAUGHTER HATES IT WHEN I PLAY THIS.LOUD AND PROUD !
THREE STARS OUT OF FIVE !!!
Brian Eno
4/5
magical and serene musical experiments out of their time, more-upbeat songs and slower tracks with special uniqueness alike
Meat Puppets
3/5
oddball rock for oddballs. this album is sponsored by kurt cobain. also fun
Sly & The Family Stone
4/5
cool grooves, 13 minute track wasnt the best but overall a good listen
Van Halen
4/5
its 80s rock from the 70s, that's got to count for something
fun album
3/5
interesting music, if not enough to truly stick in mind
Aerosmith
4/5
cool though it feels like i'm intruding on something
steve tyler probably likes that though
Leonard Cohen
4/5
dylan of the darkness
Santana
4/5
sick enjoyable oldie-rock experience
Skunk Anansie
3/5
not the most substantial of music, some cool parts but maybe a slow start
Public Image Ltd.
4/5
not quite joy division but a cool experience
The Clash
4/5
Neato, no strong opinion but it sounded nice and varied
Genesis
4/5
Exciting and strange, liked it a bit more than their other on the list
Kraftwerk
4/5
Still pretty rad for its era, though now it can come across as just being repetitive
Comfortable
The Who
3/5
An album with an interesting concept, but not that musically engaging of a listen for me. I appreciate the unique idea, though
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
This is like Brothers In Arms if Mark Knopfler had the fire of a battered, woefully-American spirit
Joy Division
5/5
A one-of-a-kind work of pure dark aura, Decades is a magical song, and The Eternal sounds like the House theme, so take that
T. Rex
3/5
Cool and stylistic in sound, but the songs past that aren't really interesting in the same way as something like Transformer or Ziggy Stardust, still a fun sort of surface-quirkiness to it
Otis Redding
4/5
Pleasant sound, the originals stand up to the covers, and there are three Sam Cooke songs on here so it's made with taste
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
I'm at least understanding the hype for Hendrix a little more with this album, but if you can make something sound as cool as All Along the Watchtower, why not make more of the other tracks sound as cool as it? That and Crosstown Traffic overshadow the rest a little for me, but it's a good album
Rod Stewart
3/5
A group of pleasant and quaint songs, nothing that changed the face of music as we know it, just '70s softie fare that doesn't lose itself getting too boring or filler-y. Also he has a voice that can scratch other peoples' throats for them
Bob Dylan
4/5
Comfortable and appealing, a fair share of great songs though I wasn't that interested in the more-bluesy tracks on the album
By this album especially I think I've been eased into appreciating Dylan more properly, the warmth from some of the songs charms me
Mike Ladd
3/5
Eccentric, to be sure
Seems quirky and unique even if it's not the most exciting listen for me
Guided By Voices
4/5
I'm so indie rock I rocked before indie rock was mainstream...
Fun to listen, kind of Dinosaur Jr. except... later
The Stranglers
3/5
Just-there rock music, don't really care too much about it but it's alright, the other albums on the list are just stiff competition
AC/DC
4/5
Satisfying rock music and catchy songs, the lesser-known tracks are still fun too
Arcade Fire
4/5
Pretty engrossing from start to end, all of their albums on this site are a pleasure to receive
Great experience, just a couple steps below the magical spark of Funeral
4/5
David Bowie
4/5
He's out here putting both the glam and the rock in Glam Rock, somebody stop him from carrying so much...
It's no Rise and Fall but it's a good 40 minutes of inspired music
Cocteau Twins
4/5
It's good, if short of being the be-all end-all to dreamy music that people treat it as
It's relatively consistent and retains its mystic sweetness throughout as well as its lyrics that contribute to the mystique and are generally made up of... some kind of words (couldn't tell you if I've ever had a stroke of Iceblink Luck)
Truly a major dub for stoner-kind
k.d. lang
1/5
This album has the music of an album where you're supposed to pay more attention to the lyrics, and the lyrics of an album where you're supposed to focus on the music
Sounds like mostly very normal 90s adult contemporary, I can't really find much any appeal that would constitute it being on this list, it's fine, it's allowed to exist, just not sure how it took off enough to be here
Constant Cravings is relatively pleasant, the rest of the album is alright to listen to, I just don't seem to get it
This rating for this album right near the start of Pride Month feels like it kind of puts me in an awkward light but we're cool, just throw Twin Fantasy into the user album submissions and I'll redeem myself in a couple years
Jefferson Airplane
3/5
It's a decent and varied psychedelic work, the songs just don't particularly grab me
They keep it interesting, at least, it's not a bad listen and it's a respectable album. It just isn't enough for something higher
Steve Winwood
2/5
The first song is the uplifting hit tune I'm familiar with, the rest of the album is what you'd expect from listening to an album with one hit tune you're familiar with; a lot of mediocre filler with no real opportunity to leave a lasting impact on your mind, just leaving thoughts about what could've been
The filler parade at least sounded kind of nice, maybe it was a little cool for its time, maybe Steve Winwood's voice is sort of powerful and grabbing, though it's just all not enough
Still a good opening song though
Pixies
3/5
The last of their work on the site, and still uniquely them. Fun rock songs by a band of eccentrics with lyrics that may or may not mean something but are still "so them."
Maybe it can't receive credit for being as "fresh" and brand-new as their other albums on the list, but if you like those, here's 40 minutes extra
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
3/5
The generic prog-rock that you hear in your head when you think of prog-rock but it probably wasn't generic for its time
For the first half at least, then there's some other random songs that artsy prog-rock bands throw in when they're not quite sure what to do after their 20-minute epic concludes
Still a cool enough listen-through, although the last song (the token '50s nod diner bop) gave me a kind of "alright, guess it's one of those tracks again" feeling, but the mental library of experiences I have with this kind of track might've come later, 1971 is pretty early
Beatles
4/5
As someone who hadn't really listened through any full Beatles albums before going through this site, the ones I had rolled over the course of the journey made the eventual Abbey Road day decently exciting
Now that it's come and I've listened to it, I don't really see the appeal or why it's the site's best album of all time (whenever Rumours isn't leading the polls) or even the best of the Beatles
It feels like they went from the peak of Revolver (so catchy, ahead of its time, moments where it sounds like it descended to mortal hands from outer space) to Sgt. Pepper (innovative, maybe a little more unbalanced in its high and low moments, A Day in the Life still one of the greatest songs of the decade) to the white album (interesting just by the idea of its existence, two hours of maybe the most revolutionary band of the 60s, a good chunk of standouts from fun to pleasant) to this, and things just feel a little lukewarm
It had some nice moments, the change from I Want You (She's So Heavy) to the pleasant feeling of Here Comes The Sun, the drama of the close of The End, and I accept that the big tracks on this album didn't hit me as much as they hit for other people, and I might be lacking in holistic view when judging an album
Still it's the Beatles, they stand out from the crowd in a way that defies simple traditional judgment, and it warrants a 4
Kraftwerk
4/5
Some fun space music from *the* designated proto-synthpop band, the sci-fi aesthetic is pretty fun and it fits them extra well
A little repetition can be forgiven in favor of their distinctive sound, feel, and aesthetic
Super Furry Animals
2/5
It's sort of like Coldplay but boring
No don't double-take, I said what I said
Tears For Fears
4/5
Sleek '80s synthpop hits with dark aura, pretty high highs but outside of Head Over Heels, the second half is kind of a lull
Still a good bunch of staple songs, it's an enjoyable album to listen to, lull included
The Beach Boys
4/5
Apart from the big hits, the individual songs aren't necessarily the most memorable or distinguishable to me, but it's still a breakthrough album with a sound that stands out in its time, and I respect that enough
R.I.P. Brian Wilson
David Bowie
4/5
Artsy, unique, didn't immediately click with me but the sky-high public opinion compels me to reevaluate. It's sort of like the next evolution of glam-artsiness from Roxy Music or something, but each of the songs all feel worthwhile and neat
The lesson to take from this is if you're an aspiring musician and you want your upcoming album to be loved by everyone, societal peer pressure is your greatest tool
Calexico
2/5
It's got interesting sound but not enough to make up for it coming across as kind of a boring listen to me, nothing really keeping me
Maybe this one's just about the experience, and at the end of the day, experience it I did
50 Cent
3/5
Cool distinctive sound, just gets a little overly consistent across the full listen
Still full of laidback cool-vibe tracks to listen to individually
The War On Drugs
4/5
The neo-Springsteen comments are true, and it's a lovely rock album and it gives you some of that feel-good driven sort of music you've got to crave. As such, the more upbeat tracks hit better than the slower ones for me, and the first half of the album stands pretty firmly above the second
The spirit of Rock 'n' Roll flows through my body and bones
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
4/5
Peak Costello is achieved
Fun late-70s cheerful new wave songs to groove eccentrically to
Pavement
4/5
Got that Dinosaur Jr. feel, messy sorta noisy indie-rocker from a world before indie-rockers had their own world, some fun variety between the feel of each song too
Radness is welcomed here
Talk Talk
3/5
Relatively unique, pleasant ethereal synthy-stuff artsiness, and he's got a pretty unique voice in him too
Enjoyable listen, though the two soft, slow tracks (April 5th, Chameleon Day) probably fought with the overall flow more than anything, outside of that the vibe's cool, maybe the tracks don't always completely earn their length
Stereo MC's
3/5
If you really love, like, one song by them then this is a great day for you because this album will basically give you that same feeling the whole way through, it's a pretty consistent and even experience
The songs can run a little long but they're not so consistent across the album that it feels like the same thing over and over, and it's produced satisfyingly enough to enjoy a listen, even if it's not a super standout
It also *might* sound exactly like what you expect it to sound like
Boston
4/5
Jammy '70s rock classic, going from the first two or three songs, which feel iconic, to the rest of the album, which exist in a limbo of feeling iconic and not iconic at the same time. It's sort of like every song feels like a hit but the big hits feel like bigger hits so your brain gets rewritten to filter out the lesser hits as regular songs
What I mean is it's pretty good
Tim Buckley
1/5
40 minutes of groovy, blues-esque, unseasoned rockstuff. I still feel like I have a zest for life and that disqualifies me from meeting some form of minimum age threshhold to like this album
My subjective brain is taking over to tell me to banish this to 1-star hell and I have lost the willpower within myself to fight against it
I liked the part where he sang about licking between her toes but that's also just a joke because actually I didn't like that part
Credit where credit's due for being an early pioneer in the sphere of foot fetish music
Tedium Buckley
I'm very glad that he has two more albums on this list that I haven't heard yet and both of them are rated lower than this one but that's also just a joke because actually I am fairly unhappy about that (but I'm sure that each of them are more important than Discovery by Daft Punk since they're on this list)
I wish to leave
Bonnie "Prince" Billy
3/5
Starting on "A Minor Place" I had every hope for the album's potential to end up being great, then somewhere in the middle of "Today I Was an Evil One" I sort of understood the reality of all these albums I've never heard of before, and why they don't reach the sky-high heights they could for me.
It was pleasant while I was listening but through that all, I could sense the aura of filler emanating from the song. This song would be there in line at Heaven's gates, watching A Minor Place be welcomed in, but when it was its own turn it would find itself denied entry. It would be thrown in the great pit of the lesser, more forgettable songs, to be lost to time as it faded from the memory of humanity.
So basically this album is pretty cool with a few occasional parts that stand out especially
Fleetwood Mac
5/5
Not every track is one of the most amazing things ever, but Rumours achieves landmark highs frequently enough to just keep its respect. Go Your Own Way and Dreams are both awesome and unique but what's even more awesome is that they're both on the same album... it offers variety, and shows its success in opposite sides of the spectrum all at once.
And it offers so many different ways to get stuck in your head!
nineteen seventy-seven beats to pack up/shack up to
The Black Crowes
4/5
Giving sort of a southern Oasis vibe (not least because it's fronted by a pair of brothers who, from reading, seem to kinda be jerks)
Across the whole listen, it can feel a little too much like just more of the same, but the same is still some good rock, and for 1990, a pretty cool sound for its time
Nico
4/5
The forbidden fifth Velvet Underground album... pretty neat, folky and artsy, not quite as exciting as a VU album but it's got enough aura to be cool
Elis Regina
3/5
This album isn't even listed in the artist's wikipedia discography what is *happening*
So someone who dealt with this before said there was an album just called "Elis" from 1980 that had all 13 tracks but I can't find it on Spotify but there are three OTHER albums under her name with that title but they're all from the early 70s but actually apparently the album Vento De Maio under that name does exist just fine, but it's not listed under her releases and I can't find it when I search for it but when I actually click the button on 1001albumsgenerator that takes me to the album on Spotify, it does exist and it's fully available to me but also it's from 1998 instead of 1978 I'm probably only listening to a phantom album from out of the future because of one of Robert Dimery's brief ventures to a record store where he closed his eyes and threw darts to decide what albums he'd get that day, right before he noticed his Victorian-era pouch full of darts tore when he was walking past the section dedicated to the complete history of the Bad Seeds, I suppose, also another of his darts definitely hit Kenya by Machito but that was a fun listen so I have no hard feelings towards that dart, I still haven't even heard a second of this album but EVERYTHING WORKED OUT! so I'll just play it now and be HAPPY!
There's a song on this with 96 million streams though so joke's on me for being uncultured
That album was alright
Paul McCartney
4/5
Comfortable music, I didn't know All Things Must Pass had a sister
Snug rainy-day feel
Metallica
4/5
As it goes on you kind of know what to expect, but it's still a cool album and Metallica has aura
First half wins though
Digital Underground
3/5
Endearingly charming with some fun grooves going, especially early on
Isn't technology a marvel?
George Jones
2/5
Most-all of the songs are covers or things he didn't write, so I guess my focus judging the album should be mostly on the sound itself? In which case it sounds like pretty normal old country music, I think? Maybe a little more of a consistently satisfying listen? It does sound pleasant.
Maybe I've simply had a fundamental misunderstanding about the list. Maybe this album isn't on the list because it's one of the best works of music ever recorded, maybe it's on the list because Robert Dimery is worried that if you don't consume at least one album's-worth of standard country music, there'll be a gap left in your musical knowledge and you won't know what it's meant to sound like when Johnny Cash isn't there tearing it up.
This is the king of competent music
Common
4/5
For when you want to listen to Kanye but guilt-free
Satisfying pleasantly-produced comfort music
The Prodigy
4/5
I think I'm just a permanent sucker for '90s electronica, album is pretty sick, if not a little stronger towards the beginning, as albums like to be
Truly they have a style of music with no parallel, unique beyond any possible comparison... i.e. just like the Chemical Brothers! ENCORE!!
But does that crab know The Prodigy is calling them fat?
Elvis Presley
3/5
Man, old music was weird, listening to ten different people's versions of the same song over and over again, is Peggy Lee's Fever my goat or is this slightly-different version from slightly-later a real game changer? I'm so glad Bob Dylan graciously invented singer-songwriters a few years later, I don't know how long I could've lasted back then
What's the answer to the Fever question? I don't know, they're just both there. This isn't my mess, the '50s did this, Elvis is just another casualty of society. The music sounds neat. I like the first song and it doesn't have its own Wikipedia page so it's probably original. That is super swanky and at least partially on fleek.
"Elvis Is Back!", more like, "Elvis-es, BACK!" which is, actually, what I say when I'm warding off a pack of feral Presley/Costello albums on 1001albumsgenerator.com. Some of Dimery's elite assassins, they are.
The Avalanches
4/5
The definitive greater-than-the-sum-of-its-parts experience, whatever this trippy proto-vaporwave magic hour is, it was fun to listen to
I liked the part where it went like "What can talk other than a person? A bird!" "CAW CAW CAW CA-CAW C-C-CA-CAW CAW"
The Specials
4/5
Unpredictably wacky and unexpectedly insane, colorful and, I guess, very maximalist for a ska band, they were gracing 1980 with a brand new experience and I appreciate it. The party does not sleep
Maybe won't stick to me that much musically, and some parts lull a bit, but listening through it was pretty wild
Holiday Fortnight Battle Royale
Kanye West
4/5
Pretty consistent but doesn't hit the same highs that would be reached on Late Registration, may drag a bit late but picks up a little by the end, overall a hopeful debut for perhaps the greatest artist in hip-hop
Sucks what's happened to his life and the person he's become, the soul he once had will remain immortalized
Rage Against The Machine
4/5
As someone who had only in recent memory listened to Killing In the Name, this is, infact, definitely an albumful of Rage Against The Machine music. If you're familiar with one of the songs and you like it then the rest of the album isn't going to throw you for a loop. That being said they're pretty sick and it's a good album to the end, they keep enough interest for the near-hour that the album lasts
Unfortunately, due to the nature of this timeline, there is no specific day where rolling this album is particularly apt, it's more just whenever you get this, "yeah that checks out"
Belle & Sebastian
3/5
I can get down with a good Wilco or Elliott Smith, but this one just kind of comes a little bland, it feels like it should be up my alley but I don't really see what other people seem to see in it, it just seems like ten relatively unexciting songs that don't sound particularly interesting or investing, and lyrically almost all of them just end up repeating themselves by the end of their not-incredibly-long runtimes, as if they're just sort of giving up
Overall kinda milkwater album but I still give it credit for being a predecessor to better things, for 1996 I accept that it was a fresh experience, and it can keep a mid-to-low 3 and some fragmented self-respect
That being said I'll be drinking from my aquarium now
P.S. The album could benefit from some more Belles and whistles. That joke popped into my head after I finished my review and I CTRL-F'ed on the album review page to make sure I didn't just subconsciously steal it. I hereby clear myself of all suspicion
The Divine Comedy
3/5
Alright album, they have a very novelty-song feel to their songwriting but it wasn't too heavy with that on this album, just an album full of slightly interesting suit-and-bowtie-pop songs, not the most exciting but don't mind a first listen
Maxwell
3/5
Smooth, consistent, not really changing my world... Pleasant to listen to but nothing I'm going to keep around or like, really remember
Johnny Cash
4/5
It's a 21st-century cover album by an artist from the '60s but through mystic Johnny Cash powers, it is full of beauty and worth listening
Sleater-Kinney
3/5
Neato '90s rocker stuff I don't mind listening to, it's got its own style, not my favorite offering of '90s rock nor punk, but unique enough for a listen
The Coral
3/5
Fun little quirky indie-psychstuff album with a lead vocalist who sometimes sounds a little bit like Billy Joel
"Described as a neo-psychedelia and folk rock album, frontman James Skelly's voice was compared to Eric Burdon of the Animals and Jim Morrison of the Doors." Yeah, alright, if you say so, Wikipedia, but also fight me because that's Sometimes-Billy-Joel singing
Will the real Billy Joel please stand up?
Ghostface Killah
4/5
Nice listening to the end, the sound varied enough between songs to not get too stale and the production was satisfying
Robert Wyatt
3/5
An intriguing bit of progstuffs, pleasant for a listen
But I must be wrong because apparently right now this is the 20th lowest-rated album on the site... I don't know if I understand how that works, I've heard some boring, repetitive, generic things with less unique and soothing sound to offer than this
Can they at least agree the last third of Sea Song is pretty?
Bad Company
3/5
'70s roughrocking, fun songs, not a bad showing of its kind
The Jam
3/5
Personally I preferred their saxophone-era work, like "Business as Usual" and "Cargo". I did think it was kinda weird they all turned Australian, though...
The Icarus Line
4/5
First few tracks kind of go awesome mode, fun anger-packed rough rocking album that appeals to my inner violent sensibilities
Fugazi
3/5
I know this artist/album? is kind of a cult classic, I'm not sure if I really get it but it's a cool enough rock album, not amazing, just fun
Sort of a Garage Pixies or somethiiiing?
Talvin Singh
3/5
It lives up to its name
Crosby, Stills & Nash
3/5
Sort of like Simon & Garfunkel but instead of boundless artistic inspiration and unique compelling sound, they just played their instruments kinda neat and had three dudes instead of two. Also a fourth dude, give or take
Dizzee Rascal
5/5
I am having a brand new musical experience
I am at least somewhat mesmerized
Dire Straits
3/5
The forged-passport Eagles play some more hooky, indistinguishable rock songs, Mark Knopfler's guitar-playing is probably sick or something, it's alright and it has a cool sound even if it gets boring at times
Truly a staple of rock history as American as apple pie (circa 14th century England)
Paul Weller
2/5
This is a rock album by a frontman of a band from decades prior who still has something to say!
That should set your expectations for how it feels and sounds
Makes me feel more like a retiree than Clapton ever could
Thinking about listening to Sleepless by Peter Wolf after this, anyone with me?
Korn
2/5
A lot of the same, sometimes the same is freaking weird, not really my favorite nu-metal nor the most exciting
Haha, they can't spell the letter R
Kraftwerk
3/5
Not the peak of electronic music nor of Kraftwerk for just listening, but it's exciting as an early endeavor into something new, and it *is* still pretty and unique, at the least
It does put things into perspective that this existed before Born To Run, Why Can't We Be Friends, and such...
Yesteryear, the Dark Side of the Moon... Tomorrow, der Autobahn
David Ackles
3/5
It sounds like a compilation of character songs from an obscure oldie musical with a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes adapted from a significantly more famous book, but the first critic review you see says it's a "faithful retelling of the story" and that's the best thing they say about it
The Stone Roses
4/5
Smiths-y sorta stuffs, but they get weird and experimental with it and it's a fun listen. Starts off pretty strong, too
As someone who has sold my soul and wants to be adored, this album is right up my alley
The Kinks
3/5
Much more pleasant and interesting than Face to Face immediately before it, a likeable '60s rock album if less unique or groundbreaking than their other contemporaries
Jacques Brel
3/5
It's an albumful of French songs in a style Wikipedia describes as "lyric-driven" so it's pretty rough out here for me
Good thing I can just listen to the album and hear the fun and the flair in it, it comes across as very... playful, maybe
Decent variety and he's got a lot of character
Le Tigre
4/5
It can get a little prototype-y, the songs like to get into a timeloop of repeating themselves over and over until the end a lot of the time, but overall this must be one of the most mid-2000s albums to have come out in a year starting with 19
It sounds like it paved a lot of paths for music to come, and those paths are also the road that runs alongside "right-up-my alley" so thank you for that
3/5
An aggressively melodic and harmonic psychedelic journey, throwing a variety of strange sounds and orchestral instrumentation as you listen
Everything isn't the most memorable on a song-by-song basis, the second half gets a little snoozy, and I'll need this album to produce even more drugs in order for me to ignore some of the lyrics, but it was a fun experience to go on
Destiny's Child
3/5
Pleasant R&B, stays mostly consistent with the cool Destiny's Child R&B style and the MIDI kinda strings and stuff, it can feel a little dated when it veers from that
Also having a gospel song praising and thanking the lord on the same album as "Bootylicious," "Sexy Daddy" and "Nasty Girl" is a little wild
Dolly Parton
3/5
It's nice to listen to, although it's hard to judge an albumful of covers that isn't doing anything new, just sort of sounding like a pretty good country album
Definitely an album, and it's also full of songs, for certain
Grant Lee Buffalo
3/5
Cool sorta Mazzy Star stuff, like the vibes though it feels like it's missing something still
Morrissey
3/5
"I'm Not Sorry" We know, Morrissey
A bananabunch of rock songs, not super memorable but something about them has a sort of satisfaction that feels like it's more than expected to me, I liked listening to the music
Not the worst as far as 21st century solo albums from frontmen of iconic '80s bands go
Rocket From The Crypt
3/5
Pretty sick as sort of a Bomb the Music Industry! album before they existed, punk with lots of bells and whistles is fun
Doesn't quite have the same highs to lift it up, though
ABBA
3/5
A good supply of ABBA-pop, sometimes fun and bouncy, always sweet to the ears. It gets dragged down by feeling like too much of the same by the end, but ABBA's still great
Pretenders
3/5
Lots of fun and clean new wave in the first half, if nothing too special, but then it bombards you with the blandest tracks towards the end and the big hit single isn't particularly special or interesting enough to rescue me from it
It's able to be enjoyed when the spirit of cheer still resides in the tracks, songs like Precious are at least enough of a treat to be held over, though I'd rather just listen to Blondie or the Cars, and they did it first, anyways
Keeping my brass out of pocket for good luck
Circle Jerks
3/5
It's the short one
I thought it was fun, though it's been washed away a little in a sea of similar-sounding bands
Penguin Cafe Orchestra
2/5
I would feel a little irresponsible giving this more than a 2, it's got some excitingly unique moments but it spends too much time leaning a little more standard and boring
Sydney Motel and Milk are cool listens, though
Ryan Adams
3/5
Maybe a real foundational stepping stone in all the sadfolk handsome-guitar-boy autumnal music to flood the world, could fit into a list of 1001 Albums that were Necessary to Birth "Life Is Strange" or perhaps alternatively, "My Auto-Generated Spotify Rainy Day Mix"
It's pretty pleasant even if it fades in the sea of everything to come, but the model is still just a little shy of sinking into the mind enough for a 4/5 score
Cocteau Twins
4/5
Simlish meditation sessions
Ride
4/5
This is a pretty lovely early entry into the shoegaze sphere, I appreciate it and the things that came later, it sounds dreamy from start to finish, and it is welcomed here
Minor Threat
3/5
This hardcore punk album sounds like the other hardcore punk albums which sound like hardcore punk albums. Sometimes I just want more spice in my life than this. When is enough enough?
It's still a fun genre if not very diverse, not bad music
MC Solaar
4/5
Getting a French hip-hop album as a monolingual english speaker isn't the smoothest way to start the day but actually it seems pretty cool and versatile
I accept this
Eminem
4/5
There's intricate world-building on display here, the rapper expresses that their middle finger is unable to go down, and then later calls back to this in another song, referencing their middle finger being stuck
I like his sound effects, too
The Dandy Warhols
2/5
A kinda bland and boring page in the book of stoner music, started off alright
SAULT
3/5
The songs aren't the most standout individually to me, but listening through the whole thing, it has a decent bounty of atmosphere
Basement Jaxx
3/5
Pleasant, though not as exciting and special as Red Alert made it seem like it could be
Sebadoh
4/5
Pretty cool, thought of it as a Pixies-like but one of the founding members was apparently part of Dinosaur Jr. so I'll consider it as the midpoint between both bands
Simply Red
2/5
Generally sounds like a filler entry in '80s music history instead of an album that's meant to be a standout in the crowd, I think Stars is a cool song (1991) so I'm leaving myself room to believe they could've figured out how to be a little more consistently interesting by then
Björk
1/5
In which the thought of the reaper's scythe turns from a cold abyss to a warm light
Each track felt like it constricted my cerebral bloodflow, even the ones that should've felt more digestible (not ancestors)
That might just be a "today thing" and maybe I'm dying but if this just happened to be the album I died to then I think a 1/5 is fair play
That all being said, this is also my first Bjork album, I respect it, and I'm looking forward to her other works on the list, if I am, infact, not dying
Jazmine Sullivan
3/5
Pleasant and easy-listening enough to absorb, though not much that I'd specifically want to listen to for musical enjoyment's sake
Björk
3/5
Maybe more inspired than being the full realization of that inspiration, the diverse strange and futuristic sounds of the album are exciting, though the songs feel like they're still missing something to fully draw me in
Appreciated for its eccentricity nonetheless
Metallica
4/5
Lulls a bit in the middle, but overall it's just a fun metal album and most of the runtime is a thrill
Jane Weaver
3/5
This is an album
Cool-adjacent
Billy Bragg
3/5
Starts with a pretty upbeat folk-rock song and sort of relaxes itself after that, I'm more into that first track myself, but the rest is still pleasant, his voice goes well with the lighter, airier guitar
Donald Fagen
3/5
Only familiar with I.G.Y., overall it's smooth and a nice listen, not necessarily doing amazing stuff but it's a nice suave listen for a rainy city stroll
Todd Rundgren
3/5
It starts with a good few songs and ends with a good few songs, but it doesn't really need to be a double album, I think if this one only had sides one and four it'd be a shoo-in for the 4/5 score
It's still tough to decide against it, though, there's lots of songs I like even in addition to the big two hits, they're just all already concentrated at the beginning and end. Cold Morning Light is pretty
Talking Heads
4/5
Something fresh, new, and eccentric in its time, a fun first look at the Talking Heads
Kate Bush
5/5
Although the "one side conventional, one side artsy" sort of blueprint doesn't hit that much with me as a layout, there's seldom a string of tracks to grace the earth as special as the five songs on the first half, Running Up that Hill, Hounds of Love, and Cloudbusting are basically three individual lightning strikes
There's not much that conveys and *feels* so immersively like love sensations as much as the title track, it tastes like exhilaration and emotion in such a strong way I don't get from that much else out there
The second side is still a pretty and pleasant listen with some sparks of magic, when the album closer The Morning Fog kicks in, it feels like warmth and sunlight flooding in all at once, it's a lovely way to finish
THRRRRROOOWWWWW THEMINTHELAAAAAAKEEEE
Doves
3/5
This is a pretty one, though by the end it might feel like too much of the same, it was a nice early-Coldplay-esque 53 minutes to me
The Pharcyde
4/5
Pretty fun jazz-rap album with a good amount of individually enjoyable songs, they're bouncy, they're upbeat and they want to have fun and they do
ZZ Top
4/5
Just a bunch of fun, slightly-cheesy rock music, it does lose some steam in the second half but it's overall satisfying to listen to
Who doesn't like fun
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
I have nothing against it and not enough for it, just some lukewarm extra Costello for whoever's craving it
It's a relatively not-so-upbeat collection for Elvis Costello, so I guess that's a slightly different lens to hear his musical stylings through
Cypress Hill
3/5
Starts interesting and fresh but ends up not the most dynamic of albums, a lot of the same, but the same is cool
Dr. Octagon
3/5
It's decent music and a shake-things-up-enough listen, little weird sometimes, but nothing's really giving it the spice to stand out amongst everything else. Just sort of at a level of consistent but not particularly enthusiastic "good"
Soul II Soul
2/5
Vaguely satisfying music but sort of mindnumbing, I can hardly remember what I just listened to
Perhaps there is merit to this album if your favorite drink is water
Deep Purple
3/5
Doesn't go too far beyond being "just another '70s hard rock album" in my mind, but they were relatively early to their craft, it's a decent-sounding one and there were some moments that engaged me, Space Truckin' was fun
The Jam
3/5
It's interesting, it's fun and it's got variety, it got kinda boring to me but I can see enough of the redeeming value to give it a 3, just not in love with it
Incubus
4/5
A supplementary '90s rock album, not the most necessary, not the most interesting but I had fun listening to it
Heaven 17
3/5
Pretty groovy early '80s synthy dancer tracks, fit for the most neurodivergent club in the most dystopian future sci-fi cybercity
The National
4/5
Warm, cozy-toned but drivenly-paced indie rock album filled with some of the most cryptic and abstract lyrics juxtaposed with much more straightforward lines
More of a consistent overall-feeling album than a highs-and-lows one, although I was familiar with Bloodbuzz Ohio before I listened to the album and it's still a standout
Fairport Convention
2/5
It's alright, artsy traditional-y folkstuff, not particularly enthralling
I guess I'm privileged knowing that artists like Simon & Garfunkel exist, maybe this is comparing apples to oranges but I just think there's better listening
Living Colour
3/5
It's decent fun, I've never liked Cult of Personality that much but past the first few tracks I got more into the album, it was a turning point listening to Letter to a Landlord when my brain called it "Huey Lewis goes Def Leppard"
Drive Like Jehu
4/5
I'm not super familiar with emo music, seems like a pretty cool rock album for its time and I enjoyed it
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
2/5
Basically everything to know is summed up in the opening line of the wikipedia page where it says "a cappella group"
It's pleasant and listenable, but it doesn't really change up much or do anything to interest me
Blondie
4/5
It's one of the new wave classics, of course, it's a cover everyone's familiar with
It's fun from end to end even if it doesn't tend to reach the highs of Heart of Glass or One Way or Another, if you wanted a fun album from the early days of the playful, surfy side of New Wave, you've got it
Traffic
3/5
It's not really my kind of prog rock, still sort of impressive though
Shuggie Otis
3/5
Pretty minimal, it's not that much in tune with my taste but there is something nice and calming in the backgroundy-feeling sound it takes on
Astor Piazzolla
3/5
After I got over the blood-pressure rush of "Against my will, it is now time to listen to an hour of instrumental jazz tango pieces" (the feelings subsided over the course of 30 minutes) I got to thinking the music was especially full and lush, and for something to have on in the background as a more passive soundtracking of life, this album is a pretty luscious and rich option
It's not quite a 4, but it is a fond 3
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
4/5
Lovely without a dull moment, they make the 36 minutes of runtime the epitome of delightful and quaint, the harmonies are nice, the album carries enough variety to keep interesting, the rotating lead vocals per song helps that case
Overall a joy
Django Django
3/5
A quirky sort of indietronic album, it has variety, it keeps somewhat interesting though something about the overall sound gives me a bland waterishness preventing me from particularly liking it. Maybe there's too much focus in the midtones or something
At least it's interesting, and even if it has a bit of a sleeper sound to it, it's not bad
Queen
3/5
It's mostly "the Bohemian Rhapsody album", the other songs didn't really have the same spark, they sort of felt like I should like them more than I did but the playful Queen rock-operaticness wasn't enough for real captivation, '39 is a nice song, though
Still nice, still interesting and varied, it's on the 4/5 borderline
The Kinks
3/5
I guess I don't know how to fully appreciate the Kinks, the lyrics probably mean a lot to someone wiser than me but musically it couldn't really take me very far, it did feel like it was a pretty big journey for just a sub-40-minute playtime, though I can't tell if that means something good or bad to me
I already know I like a couple of things from Arthur, though, so I'm still willing to look forward to that
Love
3/5
Some '60s psych stuff, it didn't interest me too much but the music was generally decent even if it didn't feel special to me, it's still a good album to listen to
The Smiths
3/5
A good album from end to end, though lacking enough sticking power to move itself higher for me
Fatboy Slim
3/5
I love my '90s electronic but I did in theory think the hits on this album were going to have more power than they actually ended up having in practice. They also kinda have their one central recognizable part (funk soul brother check it out now!) and they don't really know exactly what to do with the, like, six-minute average runtime of each song
As they say; if you love a '90s electronic artist, don't listen to their full tracks
Still a good, fun album
Air
3/5
More experimental and artsy than genuinely enjoyable, but still intriguing in this artsiness
Personally I'll keep Portishead and the world can keep this one
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
I'm grateful for every Bruce Springsteen album I can roll but I don't know if this one needed to be here
If he doesn't still have a thrillingly fresh sound as he does on Born to Run, if he doesn't still have a slew of memorable, fiery hits as he does on Born in the U.S.A., he'll always have his passion and that special Springsteen spirit
I can't give it a higher rating for that alone, but I'm still glad to roll it
The Damned
3/5
Cool punk album, changes things up decently, does some cool stuff, but I've almost been through half of the list now and if there are more than 10 albums-I-must-hear-before-I-die remaining by british punk bands I've never heard of, I'm going to personally call Death and tell him I've done my part and he can come collect
My battle is not with you, The Damned, I'm sorry I've gotten you wrapped up in all of this
Gotan Project
2/5
Alexa play Vivaldi trap remix
David Bowie
4/5
Not a particular Bowie favorite and it feels like something about the production or something in the first few songs isn't striking, I dunno, but it is also an album full of David Bowie songs and they all feel like part of the exciting experience, on any of his many albums on this list he's still going to be special
Saint Etienne
3/5
It's pleasant but mostly doesn't match up to the transportative dreaminess of the album's first real song
David Bowie
4/5
An all-timer within the discography of an all-timer, though not completely consistent in its quality (the best tracks are a cut above the rest, and Eight Line Poem basically just takes up space) it's still a rather wild joy from start to finish, it just took a little extra time for this wildness and inspiration to be honed and assembled into a more coherent masterpiece in Ziggy Stardust
But there's no sense in skipping this one either, obviously
Milton Nascimento
4/5
A lovely journey, if not a little dated for its year
Still a good experience
Björk
4/5
Hard to even rate in the 1001 albums context because of how much it feels like its own magical experience
It's a very cold (experience), sort of like a blizzard in the forest, going back and forth between ethereally grandiose when the snow is flooding down and then returning to a lonely coldness when the snowfall dies down and you're left shivering surrounded by dead trees
It has a very mystical sort of sensuality to it, it's a listen that feels hard to describe through words in a review alone
If I had to guess, I would say it's a 4/5 verging on the border of a 5/5. Is that true? I don't know, did I listen to something? Is this an album? If it were and if I did then I think that's what I'd rate it. I think I've transcended now. Good day, people of Earth
Tom Waits
4/5
My first album from Tom Waits in his Tom Waits phase and I am drawn to love this bizarre, bizarre man
Ready and hoping to be drawn even further into the madness
Eric Clapton
3/5
A nice, generally enjoyable mellow rock album, though I'd like an album of mostly-covers like this to really compel me with its sound, I got that most out of "Let It Grow", one of the few tracks written by Clapton, so that helped my opinion of the album shape more positively
Overall I think my parents would appreciate this one more than I can, but it's a good album and a quaint listen for a peaceful morning
Method Man
3/5
An old rap album, but this one creaks a little under the wear 'n' tear
Very casual looping-beat-going-on, rapping-over-it, but it varies enough to not feel like too much a chore
Decent
4/5
It's an enjoyable and decently solid album of late '70s New Wave, music's most funloving genre, so it makes for a good time
Shrivel up, DEVO!!
Grateful Dead
3/5
Not-particularly-intense psych album, just a mellow hour of drug-induced rock music
Sounds nice enough
Derek & The Dominos
4/5
In which you can listen to Layla and a lot of songs that feel substantial, though dissimilar to Layla
The The
4/5
Overall has a cool, interesting sound to it, though This Is The Day still stands a good pace above the rest. There's some robotic aura to the drums on most of the album that almost makes it feel like some machine in a factory is playing me music. Except it's on standby for the title track and that's why it's the worst track
Johnny Cash
4/5
An album to go to moreso for the charm of it than the music alone, and Johnny Cash has plenty
Marianne Faithfull
2/5
It sounds too much like what I'd think of when I hear people complain about there being an overrepresentation of random british new wave, it's easy and listenable but it doesn't reach any particular highs or compel my ears much, something something but what about the lyrics something something
Norah Jones
4/5
A valiant contender in the cozy-music sphere that thousands of future comfort-zoners have to compete with
The key was simple all along; just make a christmas album except none of the songs have anything to do with christmas
Alice Cooper
3/5
I don't know quite what I thought Alice Cooper was but I didn't know they was/were/is/are a pretty decent glam rock band/lead singer of himself
Good music, though not always at the same height, first few songs pretty exciting and it gets into a pretty-good-not-great lull and then the final song brings it back
Neil Young
3/5
Not as engaging as On The Beach, but still interesting
Gorillaz
4/5
I don't tend to like factoring in too many visual elements when I'm evaluating an album but Gorillaz are a complete aesthetic and I love the gritty forever-nineties feel that they have, the album might not be captivating all the time but I'm a fan of style
Herbie Hancock
4/5
Good and entertaining listen to the end, satisfying sound, did some occasional wacky stuff and even though I preferred the more normal parts I still appreciate the feeling of interest that wackiness provides
The Go-Betweens
3/5
Unmemorable but I didn't mind listening to it
Happy Mondays
3/5
It was probably a pretty fresh and new sound for its time and I appreciate that even if the songs get somewhere between annoying and repetitive
Grizzly Bear
3/5
I know it's liked decently well in its pretty-indie-stuff sort of sphere but the sound just overall felt sort of bland to me except for maybe Two Weeks and some other tracks to a lesser extent, but I know there's people out there who think Arcade Fire isn't exciting too so that's just how different opinions can be
This popcorn didn't pop
The Vines
2/5
Hey, they're Australian, that's an interesting characteristic
There aren't enough interesting characteristics about the music so all I can do is make surface-level observations
Apparently everyone compares them to Nirvana, which I didn't expect, it's not something I really intuitively pick up on, it feels like there's something naturally exciting about Nirvana's sound that isn't here
If this were the original Nirvana there wouldn't be a second coming. Or maybe there would I've been confused by the hype around things before
Emmylou Harris
3/5
It's mostly a cover album so I can't give it too much praise ("that's a lovely story" crossed my mind at least once during one of the songs) but it's a good, rich-sounding album with a good collection of songs nonetheless
The Undertones
3/5
Fun, similar to the Ramones, not the most unique thing but it sounds nice
4/5
Pretty cool, does lots of different things and they all feel decent
Fresh experience
FKA twigs
5/5
Strange electronic zen tracks and an artsified contemporary R&B style, pretty soothing and entrancing to listen
Overall a fresh experience and every track is cool
Aretha Franklin
4/5
Mostly covers but it's a good album to listen to, she's got a voice of power, and that voice is well on display
N.E.R.D
3/5
Maybe not versatile enough for its length, but it's charming, fun, and dude just works at the Barnes & Noble store
Beatles
3/5
Not so much of the unique out-of-the-box innovation they'd be known for, but they were always a good band to listen to even when they were just a rock 'n' roll band from the '60s
Elastica
2/5
I remember seeing this cover in the past without knowing about the album and thinking it was some kind of new-wave punk album from the late '70s, and now that I've listened to it I can say that it sounds like some kind of new-wave punk album from the late '70s too, then afterwards I check the reviews and everyone's saying they ripped off a post-punk band from the late '70s and I'm glad we're all on the same page
I don't know where the Britpop comes in but maybe that's just my lack of understanding the genre
Ultimately it seems like it succeeds in being a decent album from 1979 that was some kind of foundational cult classic for its time except it's actually from 1995 and I don't really find the appeal for myself
Living proof that the past does exist in the event that a nanomachine uprising targets and destroys all traces of pre-1990 music on Earth
SZA
3/5
It tastes like the ingredients of a powerful album, but I still prefer having a little more offered in the way of whole-cooked songs I enjoy listening to as well, regardless of all the atmospheric pads and beats and hard-hitting personal lyrics
Not quite enough to go higher but it does have some aura to it
Koffi Olomide
3/5
Sounds vibrant and full of sunshine, some digital '90s sounds and productionstuffs on a bunch of bright, bouncy tracks
Fun listen
UB40
2/5
It sounds nice but it's too similar from song to song
They say variety is the spice of life and I say I want my music seasoned
N.W.A.
4/5
Fun time all around, enough variety and energy to stay exciting and I can't help but pay attention to the words
Muddy Waters
3/5
Has some variety, a decent pace, sounds nice and doesn't stay too long, I don't know how much more I could ask for from this early on, but it probably achieves as much as it needs to
The Modern Lovers
3/5
Fun little piece of weird rock, not quite enough to remember for a while but enough to appreciate
Solange
4/5
Good atmosphere and nice to listen to, a couple of the early tracks were extra unique and engaging to hear before the album settled into something a little more consistent but it's still worthwhile
Van Morrison
4/5
Fun and smooth, from the covers to the original songs, the focus is on the addictive sound of the music
As far as live albums go it's not too affected by being live, it has a good quality and it's enjoyable as a normal album experience, with some extra energy towards the end
The Zombies
4/5
the kinks if they were awesome
John Lee Hooker
1/5
This album has great, innovative, fresh, exciting lyrics like when he says he ain't gonna be your fool no more and he's rocking these blues away, or when he says his baby's done him wrong, but that's alright
The only thing that could possibly make this album more captivating is if he takes these creatively-inspired lines and repeats them a few more times (so that the listener can soak all that depth in) to the same predictable melodies unchanged from decades ago
I don't know the value of a blues album like this from the year 1989, or why it would be in the 1001 list, and even moreso I don't understand why this album is rated so high, there's a couple cool tracks, Cuttin' Out was entertaining, but the track stretch of Sally Mae > That's Alright > Rockin' Chair was about as dull as near-brain death (with some emotion in the singing on the latter track being the only remaining sign of life)
am I so out of touch? no, it's the Gen X'ers who are wrong!
cover's kind of cool though. only at the time of writing this did I realize dude wasn't a frog
Dennis Wilson
4/5
Enchanting, diverse, and strange, it does sound like an album worthy of a Beach Boy; some of the magic has followed the trail here
Tom Tom Club
3/5
Fun, quirky and electronically groovy, easy to hear the Talking Heads in it
Dr. Dre
4/5
The tracks can get a little similar sometimes but overall it keeps itself pretty enticing, and for 1992 it's got a pretty fresh sound to it
The Monkees
3/5
Relatively pleasant and inoffensive '60s rock, not the most boring this list has to offer and Zilch kinda got a groove to it
The White Stripes
3/5
The sound of the White Stripes is unique and draws me in, but the songs offered here are often too simple and unsubstantial to make fulfilling use of that sound
Rod Stewart
3/5
It's a shame this album is mostly covers because I wanted to make a comment about him writing a bunch songs about relationships struggling, him and his woman failing to stick to eachother, only to then make a song fictionalizing an alternative protagonist called "Shorty" and having that be the one song where the singer and the love interest have actual undivided passion for one another
But instead I guess all I've got to say is, uhh, he's sure got a voice on him and these songs are rockin' and rollin' and whatnot
Dunno if they're so amazing they warrant a mostly-cover album being on this list along with another Rod Stewart album and a Faces album, but it sounded fine enough at least, and there's worse things to be had than this
Ray Price
3/5
Basically a cover album, an abundance of similarity between each song but there's a couple slower tracks around the end that give the feeling of a bit of extra variety
It wasn't particularly amazing but it sounds appealing enough to scrape into the 3/5 zone
Jorge Ben Jor
4/5
Pretty rich and gripping to the ears, never a dull moment
Fela Kuti
4/5
Perhaps the lushest and fullest of funky jam sessions
The Specials
3/5
The first song i.e. the big hit was pretty fun and different, overall as the rest of the album went on there was a certain cleanliness to it, a sort of aftertaste making me wish for more grit. It has that sound that makes it *feel* like it's a more forgettable album, but it was fun and varied enough to make a counterargument for that
Michael Jackson
4/5
The highs are sky-high and the lows are still smooth, enjoyable, and perched comfortably, though said lows spend enough time to bring the album just shy of a 5, it's a great listen for any day nonetheless
The Notorious B.I.G.
4/5
Overall cool '90s rap album, lots of sampling, throw a weird skit in the mix, it's all very familiar to other rap classics I've received from the list, and they released earlier, but it still sounds good and it earns a listen
The Cure
4/5
Magical beyond expectation for works of its time, sparkled with just a little less life than Disintegration yet to come at the other end of the decade
Shy of the 5 mark, but still all you could ask for, it's a dreamy and entrancing album
Aerosmith
3/5
Seems like a solid enough rock album, and the everybody-knows-them hits are a couple steps extra solid
Not captivating but it sounds good
Dusty Springfield
3/5
Good songs, I can never fully respect the era of music where most songs were factory-produced for every other famous singer to perform their own version, but I also thought this was going to be a country album so clearly I don't know enough to speak
I'll accept that my musical philosophy is stuck in the modern times and harbor mixed feelings but still appreciate this album
Scott Walker
3/5
Interesting sort of dramatic work, some highs, some duller moments, the best songs are the ones where he busts out the full backing choir and it takes on its own unique feeling, but otherwise there's a lot to the album that doesn't quite sound fresh enough to inspire me too much
Pere Ubu
3/5
Listening to this and trying to tell myself to put rating to music just makes my brain functions stop and my eyes go crosseye, but I think I like it and respect it, if not quite to 4/5 level
These alcoholically-rambled guitar-scribbled confusion songs are the music of influence and progress, long may they live
Beck
4/5
Stringy emotive indie-if-it-weren't-indie music, never slows down *too* much or leaves a particularly dull moment, mostly just stays at a gentle undemanding pace
Comfortable listening experience with lots of pleasant musical sweetness
Lana Del Rey
3/5
Soft and quaint pop from the softly-sung sugar-and-cream era of popular music where Billie Eilish can be queen and Beach House's Space Song can be a TikTok sensation
Not the most distinguishable album from its kind but it's pleasant to receive from the list
David Gray
3/5
Has its own unique feel and sound, good, sticks pretty safely and consistently to that sound and makes a lot of the songs end up feeling the same, not as good
But nice enough to be worth a listen
Tracy Chapman
4/5
Good throughout, doesn't last too long and the lyrics stay decently convincing, sounds good too
Abdullah Ibrahim
3/5
Just a normal jazz album? Not particularly special or distinctive in any way that lets me see why it's on this list, but it sounds fine and the tracks are good enough to bring it to a 3, at least. A slightly confused but accepting 3.
Traffic
3/5
Overall good-sounding without much for lasting impact, meets expectations for a '60s rock album
Sinead O'Connor
3/5
Without having ever really paid attention to the "big hit" of the album, the whole thing still comes across decently pretty and emotional
Pleasant enough to be worth a listen
The Velvet Underground
5/5
The very first of its kind, and its kind is something angry, on a myriad of hard-to-pronounce substances, numbed-up in the chaos of urban life
A fresh and unique experience in its time, yet still today
Lupe Fiasco
4/5
A very big experience with satisfying and catchy tracks
It's so cinema that it gets a feature-film's worth of credits at the end
Tim Buckley
3/5
Sleepy, perhaps the context where someone would say "meandering," but with an interesting sound for a comfortable musical backdrop
actually "meandering" is one of the top keywords for the album reviews right now so that's funny to me, I guess it's just engrained in people's minds as a standard musical critique word
Consensus established
Cee Lo Green
3/5
The tracks didn't really stand out to me in particular but overall it's a good-sounding and varied R&B exploration of its time
Marvin Gaye
5/5
One of the smoothest experiences that the world can confine to a 35-minute runtime, magical, sweet, and I certainly can't imagine much else matching up in its time
Blue Cheer
3/5
It can't always save itself from coming across one-note, but it's a respectable endeavor into a new world of heaviness and weight
Erykah Badu
4/5
Very smooth listen, does a good job of drawing you in and making you forget the passage of time
