Album Summary

2112 (pronounced "twenty-one twelve") is the fourth studio album by Canadian rock band Rush, released on 1 April 1976 (or March 1976, according to some sources) by Anthem Records. Rush finished touring for its unsuccessful previous album Caress of Steel, in early 1976. The band was in financial hardship due to the album's disappointing sales, unfavourable critical reception, and a decline in attendance at its shows. The band's international label, Mercury Records, considered dropping Rush but granted the band one more album following negotiations with manager Ray Danniels. Though the label demanded more commercial material, the band decided to continue developing its progressive rock sound. 2112 was recorded in February 1976 in Toronto with regular producer Terry Brown. Its centerpiece is a 20-minute title track, a futuristic science-fiction song that takes up the entire first side of the album. There are five individual tracks on side two. 2112 was released to favourable reviews from music critics and quickly outsold the band's previous albums. It peaked at No. 5 on the Canadian Albums Chart and No. 61 on the US Billboard Top LPs & Tape and was the band's commercial breakthrough in the country. Rush supported the album with a tour of the United States, Canada, and for the first time, Europe, from February 1976 to June 1977. 2112 remains the band's second-highest-selling album (behind Moving Pictures) with more than 3 million copies sold in the United States. It is listed in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and ranked second on Rolling Stone's reader's poll, Your Favorite Prog Rock Albums of All Time. 2112 has been reissued several times; a 40th Anniversary Edition was released in 2016 with previously unreleased material, including the album performed by artists including Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Billy Talent, Steven Wilson, and Alice in Chains.

Second progressive rock album in a row for me and this Rush album was much better. I have never been a fan of Rush as I think most of their music is average. There were a few songs on this album that I found to be pretty good and enjoyed. Overall the album was a good listen and I give it a solid 6/10. It is one I could see listening to again sometime.

That Overture is Epic, isn't It? I didn't pay attention to the story, I paying attention to the music. That's the cool part about Prog, if you don't like the lyrics, the music may be more to your liking. The other amazing part about Rush is: Its just 3 guys making all this wonderful music. Geddy Lee reminds me of a Screech Owl. I can't tell if that's a compliment or not. You be the judge. 4

Now, I’m partial to a bit of prog and I like sci-fi, so in theory I should fall into the same Venn diagram as Rush. However the reality doesn’t quite match up. Geddy Lee’s falsetto vocals leave me cold and drummer Neil Peart (technically brilliant as he was) obviously subscribes to the ‘more is more’ school of drumming. The rest is clever twiddly bits, sections of classical music thrown in to show how cultured they are and one too many improvised guitar solos. The biggest problem though is the theme of the title track, inspired by the objectivist libertarian philosophy of Ayn Rand which is so appealing to teenage boys who think that billionaires shouldn’t have to pay taxes because they’re obviously so much cleverer than everybody else. The actual story is some trite nonsense about an intergalactic war where the baddies who want to outlaw individualism and free will are represented by a red star (subtle, eh?). The hero of the piece discovers a mysterious ancient artefact in a cave which turns out to be an electric guitar and at that point I stopped caring and lost the will to live. The second side of the album is a bit more fun, with a song about the relative merits of different varieties of hash from round the world. However, the final track returns to Ayn Randism with ‘Something for Nothing’ which might as well be called ‘Wake up Sheeple’. Oh, and for anyone still reading it turns out that Ayn Rand did end up living on welfare towards the end of her life. Oh dear, how sad, never mind.

#264 Heard Before? Of course. Although I am in Canada, where Rush is more of an institution or mysterious force rather than a group of musicians. Notes: - Neil Peart has more great drum fills in this album than most drummers in their whole career. Too much is never enough. - "what about the voice of Geddy Lee / how did it get so high / i wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy" - it's an interesting group when the lone guitarist completely shreds, but is still consistently outshone by his bandmates. - the slow songs really kill the momentum. Verdict: Essential prog on side one, mostly drab side two. Listen Again? Probably the title suite. Honestly I was surprised at how much I enjoyed revisiting it.

Wizard Rock is really hard. On one hand, remember when Banda used to actually play instruments? On the other- why? Why Wizard rock, why?

I've never been able to get into Rush. All that talent, and not for me. Listening to this whole thing made me like them less, but that's alright.

Never been much of a Prog-rock fan, but this does bang.

Very unusual rock, I really liked it.

another great rush album

I don't want to oversell it, but it changes you forever.

Killer Side-1 with a mid Side-2

really good enjoyed it

Love Rush. I used to think 2112 was a bit cheesy, and maybe it is. But it's also rich, superb, and classic. Hard rock prog at its finest.

Tries too hard.

Never been the biggest Rush fan, I think because some fans of theirs bang on endlessly about them and they don't match the hype. This is objectively a pretty good album, glad I gave it a proper listen. Still not sold on Geddy's voice though

I liked all the songs, i wish some passages were longer. The guitar sounded really nice

There is so much good here. A long epic and then some shorter stabs.

Quoi ?? Pardon ???

A little too much yelling, a few too many drum rolls, I guess Rush is for me

That 20 minute epic is actually pretty epic. I love the futuristic storytelling.

The audacity to make a 20 minute opening song and to have it sound ok

1er titre chouette, le reste pas ma vibe

You have to respect the scifi opera in rock album ambition. Maybe not so much the wankery.

It always gets me when people see a 20 minute song and start whining because "ooh, it's too long" or "I can't listen to all of that". There's grown adults (I'm assuming children aren't doing this?) that don't have the attention span to sit down and listen to something for 20 minutes. Even worse, the album's only 38 minutes. That's like an average album length, and with this album it's not even the noodly kind of prog rock that drags on forever. This kinda just sounds like a good ol' rock album to me. Anyway, rant over. It's prog. It'd be worrying if I gave it anything less than a 5.

RUSH GOAT. Ik min yndlings men stadig bangin

The first track is an entire album in itself. 20 minutes?? Good grief. Kept me entertained on a long bus journey though.

Though I have an affinity for Moving Pictures, it's still not a frequently sought out sound for me. This album was even less so.

I can't explain it.. but something in me loves this album.. I think they have a unique atmosphere. Love the instrumentals and the voice of the lead makes it complete. The 20 minutes track takes you from one emotion to another 4/5

I have heard people talk about this album but for some reason it isn’t one I’ve heard. For as much other random rush I’ve heard I was very surprised this was not played more. A very good listen

A self-indulgent, cheesy, Libertarian manifesto, and a classic "fuck you" to the record label.

Dude Rush has got some bangers but this album sucks. They can’t even do a proper A side 20 minute songs because it’s patchworked together and clearly different songs with a cliche and lame story. B side is meh, Hemispheres is better.

I understand why someone would enjoy this music, and I know they are considered to be master musicians, but damn is it boring

I like a lot of prog, and really got into Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves, so I was pretty excited to listen to this. Unfortunately, I found it really dull. Twilight Zone was the only song I really enjoyed. The title track/suite is interesting in places, but I found the story a bit silly. Maybe it would have been considered decent Sci-fi at the time, but it seems cheesy now to me. A guy who has never heard music before finds a guitar, tunes it up and immediately starts shredding? I find that a bit hard to believe.

Rush are a very marmite band (you either love em or hate em). I took me a while to appreciate them. I've listened to this album lots and it's a 5 star classic every day.

I just can’t get behind rush. The singer is annoying as hell and the rest of the music doesn’t do anything for me

nothing special.

Prog sensibility plus a classic rock punch that makes a rare crossover

What an opening. And what sounds a 3 piece band can come up with and produce. Brb. Need to go buy this on vinyl since I don't own it already for some reason.

Oh boy here we go. As I mentioned in my previous album review I am not a fan of “Pretentious Prog Rock”. I was never the biggest fan of bands like Pink Floyd or King Crimson. I mainly listen to Hip-Hop and Electronic with occasional splashes of Pop and more accessible rock genres like Indie and Pop Rock. But I might as well rip the bandaid off now. Let’s see if I’ll catch the Rush Rash or something, IDFK. Let’s just get this over with. Track 1 pt. 1: 2112: Overture. Oh god it’s a 20 minute suite to start off. I am not looking forward to this album. I’ve already forgotten the intro. 3/10 Track 1 pt. 2: The Temples Of Syrinx. Okay, okay. I see what you’re cooking up. I actually don’t hate this track. It’s catchy and energetic. 7/10 Track 1 pt. 3: Discovery. I wish I was listening to Daft Punk’s Discovery over this so far. I just do not like this track. It’s putting me to fucking sleep. 2/10 Track 1 pt. 4: Presentation. That’s one way to wake me up at least. This album is putting me through a rollercoaster so far with ups and downs. The calm singing with acoustic production in one portion perfectly contrasts the shouting vocals and electrified guitars the next. And the ending picks up the pace I didn’t even know could be picked up. 9/10 Track 1 pt. 5: Oracle. I thought this was gonna be another down with the dreamy production yet again but the second half of this track really woke me up again. I’m not the biggest fan of the guitars on the vocals but eh. That’s probably just a me thing. 6/10 Track 1 pt. 6: Soliloquy. Holy guitar solo. 8/10 Track 1 pt. 7: Grand Finale. If there’s one thing I love about rock performances, it’s the breakdowns at the end of songs. If you need an example just check any live performance of Primus’ “Harold Of The Rocks” and while this breakdown isn’t anything close to Harold, it’s still an awesome way to finish a suite of ups and downs. 9/10. Overall for the whole suite: 6/10 Track 2: A Passage To Bangkok. Did Carmen Sandiego write this song? It’s just a stupid little song about smoking weed around the world. I pretty big deviation from the nihilistic 20 minute epic. 3/10 Track 3: The Twilight Zone. Eh? It’s a cute tribute to the show of the same name. Would this be the first ever Nerdcore song? Either way if I ever watched the show I would probably like the song more. 5/10. Track 4: Lessons. Is it okay to say I just don’t care for this song? I listened to the whole thing trying to think of something to say but I just couldn’t think of anything at all. I guess the guitar at the end is alright? 4/10 Track 5: Tears. Wow. This is probably the only song I’m keeping off this album in my playlist. A genuinely beautiful song. I did not expect this. 9/10 Track 6: Something For Nothing. This sounds very Pink Floyd-ish. Specifically something off of Animals or an energetic song on The Wall. Just chill out on the vocals (and maybe the guitars) and you got mid-era Pink Floyd. 5/10. Overall while I didn’t hate this album like I thought I would, I didn’t necessarily care for it either. The suite is too varied in quality for the good tracks to save it and the post-suite tracks range from just good to boring and forgettable…except Tears, that’s a great track. Favourite Track: Tears Least Favourite Track: Discovery Overall Rating: 5/10

Electric, filled with energy at times and soothing, relaxed and meditative at others. Beautiful guitar solos. Favorite track - A Passage to Bangkok

Never really listened to Rush and enjoyed it more than I thought I would but the lyrics / vocals really just seem like a parody at times

side a peak, side b fire too 9/10 best songs - 2112, passage to bangkok

I enjoyed this as much as I’ve enjoyed Rush in the past. Not my favorite.

Amaizing

I love Rush but this one isn’t my favorite.

Excellent album start to finish. Neil Peart on drums was an absolute beast, even back then. Overall, I prefer 80s Rush, with the synthy sound and more refined vocal from Geddy Lee, but the raw performance on 2112 couldn't help but win me over. Not to mention Temples of Syrinx turned out to be eerily prophetic for 2026.

Don't know much Rush, so looking forward to this. Sounds like prog. I do have trouble with concepts albums, in this case concept side 1s. The lyrics/story are usually pants. Like musical theatre. Anyways, music is cool. 3.5 rounded down Heard before? No Owned: No, 109/435 (25%) Will I get:

An all time classic and one of the reasons I like music in general. Long live rush. 👌🏻🤘🏻

Im a massive fan of modern prog rock, ashamed to say I only know the classic Rush songs. Enjoyed giving this whole album a listen, the musicianship is incredible. I think the album is a bit weaker in the second half. Will need to listen to more!

Hårdrock. Hård rock. Riktigt bra!

Not sure why, but I’ve always written Rush off. I always put them in the cheesy dad rock box. However, this album was pretty excellent. I loved the experimental 20 min piece. And I loved the zeppelin inspired side 2. Wouldn’t say it’s that sort of level but it’s pretty close. Will give 5 stars I reckon!

The aliens are coming. Hello? Is a Tesla about to hit me or something? What is this? Ok so it's aliens but they fuck hard? They're Canadian naturally. A 20 minute title track. 20 minutes. 20 whole minutes. What are we doing. My god. Wait ok so I am actually enjoying this. A passage to Bangkok indeed. Why is he singing across my headphones. What. I actually do like this. It's quite solid music. Rahhh Canada. Favourite: A Passage To Bangkok Least favourite: The Twilight Zone

4.65. So good

It was okay 2

Mainly more nerd rock. However, Tears is a beautifully tender track

Really enjoyable listen! It's crazy to think about how in this imaginary dystopian future, the computers are making all the decisions, fascism is on the rise, and creativity is a waste of time because the machines do it for you. That's just like...oh. I need to ask ChatGPT what the word for that is. ⭐⭐⭐⭐.25

Pretty good prog rock, but far from a favorite.

Pomp rock. Don't know who this is aimed at really?

This is what kids did before Deltron 3030 or something maybe

Pretty much hell yeah

I mean, that's one of the greats right there. I'm not particularly a prog fan but this one is in my collection and I've listened to many times throughout the years. Great stuff.

Outstanding!!!!

Eu gostei. 4/5

I've never gotten into Rush and this did nothing to change my mind

I'm as big a Rush fan as the next guy. I love much of their catalog, from their self-titled debut through Hold Your Fire. Still, aside from the "2112 Overture," this ranks among their weaker efforts for me. The saving grace is that the overture takes up more than half the album, which is enough to keep it at a solid 4/5.

I made a needlepoint of this album cover in my junior high crafts class. So yeah, I was/am a fan. That said, it’s not my favorite Rush album, and their lyrics, like in most Rush songs, are something that sound like they were written by someone who smoked way too much weed and read a bunch of Ayn Rand and thought it was brilliant instead of the shitty writing of a deranged selfish asshole like Rand was. And it sounds that way because that’s exactly what happened. But man, those guys could sure play.

I know i should like this more but it just doesnt quite hit right for me

This was such a nothing album for me--I listened on a walk and would tune back in after a while and realize it was still going. No active dislike, but it did the opposite of hook me.

Not good

An actually great concept album.

I love a bit of Rush, but this isn’t a favourite

pretty great album. can't believe rush was formed in willowdale toronto.

I can’t deny the talent but man, sometimes it’s too much.

Such an awesome album. And such a cool story. I will say, this is not a good background album

Teetering between a 3 and a 4 on this one. Enjoyed Moving Pictures more, felt like there was more to it than 2112. This felt samey across the whole album. The synths variation on Moving Pictures offers more variety and width to the albums sound. This felt boxed in, good and tight and yada yada, but boxed in. I will need to re-listen and maybe take a closer to the lyrics to get the conceptual/storytelling side of this, as I know thats a big part of it. But even if it were to knock me socks off storywise, I still don't think sound wise I would call this anything crazy other than the technical skills goin around in here. Moving Pictures just oozes more creativity imo.

Starts of with an absolutely pointlessly long intro before becoming a load of nonsense. A clear influence on the more pompous bits of This Is Spinal Tap. But, perhaps without this there would be no Blood Incantation, which would be a shame. Lyrics are godawful throughout. Some of the tunes are interesting, but generally this is not grabbing me at all.

Not really my favorite album by Rush. I would honestly rate it lower but I do like one song on the record sort of.

I was almost halfway through this album thinking all these songs sound the same before I realized the first track is more than half the length of the album! Not that it made a huge difference once I got to the second track; “A Passage to Bangkok” is just embarrassing. This album should have been a single. I don’t even dislike Rush usually, this album just sucks.

This is some Prog Rock that sounds pretty great (without Ayn Rand's influence, it would have been better)

Très très cool Didn’t know it was that good

mega cornball shit I used to really like in high school

Better than I remembered

Really enjoy the instrumentals here. Some of the vocals are nice- the rest of them are the annoying whiny shout tone that ruled this era of rock and will always ruin my day. Feels like theres some fun stuff here but i cant get past the fact that much of it feels like an album Charlie from Always Sunny would create (but better instrumentals). I liked the overture a lot.

All three very good artists and performers, but the end product doesn't draw me in much. Instrumental sections are my main highlights on every song so I may not love Geddy Lee's voice Highlights: "Overture", "Lessons"

ok first of all. there is no reason to have a TWENTY MINUTE intro song. Could have easily been cut in half (a producer's cut, if you will), placed at the end of the album. Or cut up the sections into four 4 min songs and make it a concept album. How interesting and cool this album would be if it were a community theater show? +1 star for interesting fun to play bass lines. +.5 stars when you imagine this as a rock musical with live pit performers, lots of scene changes and fog machines.

Could absolutely see myself being annoying about Rush if I were around in their heyday

Oh my god is this project finally going to make me a Rush fan… is this what it’s all been building toward? Three decades we’ve held it off but considering everything about me it does seem inevitable… Yeah I really really dug this one. Kinda prog rock lite? Maybe that’s why it worked so much for me. The first track is obviously absurd and cheesy and eye roll worthy but I didn’t even care, I was completely in. The back half of the album is less interesting but still fun, I love listening to his voice. Surrendering to the siren call of yet another Canadian musical god. Strong 4.5! Second act montage needle drop in my biopic: “2112” (specifically everything after “Presentation”)

I like this one, it was a little weird and the first song was so long but it was enjoyable

didn’t finish but it sounds like that drum store scene in broad city
