Album Summary

Master of Puppets is the third studio album by the American heavy metal band Metallica, released on March 3, 1986, by Elektra Records. Recorded in Denmark at Sweet Silence Studios with producer Flemming Rasmussen, it was the band's last album to feature bassist Cliff Burton, who died in a bus accident in Sweden during the album's promotional tour. The album's artwork, designed by Metallica and Peter Mensch and painted by Don Brautigam, depicts a cemetery field of white crosses tethered to strings, manipulated by a pair of hands in a clouded, blood-red sky, with a fiery orange glow on the horizon. Instead of releasing a single or video in advance of the album's release, Metallica embarked on a five-month American tour in support of Ozzy Osbourne. The European leg was canceled after Burton's death in September 1986, and the band returned home to audition a new bassist. Master of Puppets peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200 and received widespread acclaim from critics, who praised its music and political lyrics. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest and most influential thrash metal albums of all time, and is credited with consolidating the American thrash metal scene. It was certified six times platinum by the RIAA in 2003 for shipping six million copies in the United States, and was later certified six times platinum by Music Canada and platinum by the BPI. In 2015, Master of Puppets became the first metal recording to be selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

Why is Metallica trying to influence me with their bullshit? I thought they weren't like those other entertainers! Disposable Heroes? Leper Messiah? Don't bring that outside shit here. I just want to listen to heavy music, baby.

What can be said that hasn't been said before about this? Maybe this: if great thrash metal albums were peanuts and you were allergic to peanuts, you'd die listening to this album!

One of my all time favourites

Shamefully, first time I’ve heard this beyond first two tracks. Battery gets your head bouncing as soon as it gets going like Title track I’ve maybe heard 200 times, seminal song of my early teenage years listening to metal-adjacent stuff while bashing - and pretending I was at all good at - StarCraft II (other notable artists included Rammstein, System of a Down, Dream Theater and Opeth while I'm on this tangent, the latter two definitely giving me a tolerance for longer track lengths) Reminiscence aside, I thought the rest was fantastic, stacked top to bottom with stank-face-worthy riffs and operatic solos. Sanitarium really stood out, and loved the fakeout ending of Leper Messiah to name a few moments that stood out on a first listen. Probably my very treble-heavy, open back headphones to blame, but I could barely find the bass here at all at some points. Is it just totally locked in groove with the rhythm guitar or something? Something about longer tracks but less of them seems to make an album go a lot quicker for me - less fatiguing to get used to new sounds maybe and you can just get into a groove with the current track? I'm still struggling to get into that Minutemen album because of that, I feel like I could really love it but it just throws so many tracks at you in such a short span that it can feel almost impenetrable to get to know the songs that aren't literally the Jackass theme song

Ever since YouTube cooking start Adam Ragusa randomly made a video about Metallica and I decided to give them a go I have came back to this album specifically time and time again I’m not normally into metal but this is just a masterpiece, each song is very long but none of them feel too long Favs: Leper Messiah, Orion 5

Love it. Riffs, vocals and guitar are as good as Metallica get. Song composition is enticing. Drums have absolutely no nuance or subtlety at all, but it kinda works?

I did not realize how good Metallica could be. I thought going into this that my favourite album from them was ride the lightning but I think that I have been proven wrong. There are some truly great guitar solos with feel and soul. Not just their usual spamming notes (which is still cool and impressive). Favourite songs: Welcome Home (Sanitarium), and Orion.

"The Thing That Should Not Be" и правда лучше бы не был на альбоме...

Master of Puppets is one of THE definitive albums of Metallica's career, as well as being one of the foundational albums of thrash metal. This album is what people look to when they talk about Metallica being one of the Big 4 in the thrash metal scene. Insane riffs, Cliff Burton's chunky bass lines, pounding drums, and some of Hetfield's best lyrical work, MoP is simply a damn good album. It's an integral part of my metal rotation, and I'm pretty sure I hear at least one song from this album every day, and I've yet to get bored with it. One of the best albums, period.

Big metal fan - Metallica is one of the best - not their best album though…

Einfach immernoch geil

8/10 - classic thrash album, but not my favorite Metallica record. Love the more melodic parts (Sanitarium, Orion) contrasted with the more traditional riffs.

Better then when I first listened to it 2 years ago, but I’ve never liked thrash metal . 3.5/5

It’s fine, honestly does t sound that great in my opinion.

Hard to say something bad about them

I mean, it's the best Metallica album isn't it? 🤘

Title track, Welcome Home and Battery are all bangers. Solid 4

Easily one of Metallica's best albums. It was one of the albums that defined Thrash Metal. It has a bunch of their well-known songs like Master of Puppets, Damage Inc., and The Thing That Should Not Be. It inspired so many future artists and is definitely worth the listen! Truly one of the best albums in history!

The first 5 Metallica albums are all great in their own right, but the album with Cliff Burton have that extra for me. Ride The Lightning is my favourite Metallica album, because that was the album that introduced me to this kind of thrash metal. Master of Puppets contains only classics of 80's metal. 5/5

Mettalicas best! Fantastic album

Excellent thrash album. Some really cool melodic parts, and some power metal ish riffs too. IMO Metallica's best album. No skips. Favorites: Battery, title track, Leper Messiah

4.5 This is Metallica's greatest album, according to critics. I love it, but for me it's probably 3rd behind Ride the Lightning and ...And Justice for All.

Great album

A parental favorite I recognize from many a basement workout. Love that they turn drugs into a metaphor for governmental control/oppressive authority - maybe the only way to get punks to stop doing drugs. As always with Metallica I love their softer moments of reflection as much as their frenetic blood pumping stuff. Great album!

It’s a classic for a reason. Will never be top tier for me just personally- but it’s perfect gym fuel. Why are all the songs like three songs ? lol that’s dope

i couldn't imagine hearing this album when it was new. I grew up with my mom listening to her Metallica CDs so I've honestly become a little desensitized to the craftwork here and pure artistry. Hard to believe humans can do all that with a guitar.

In a vacuum, forgetting everything I know about them, that first minute of Battery absolutely rips. Unfortunately context exists. To me, Metallica are the New York Yankees of metal. Unlikable personally and with bad fundamentals.

Damn, this one's a fan favorite. I think it's okay. It's certainly ahead of its time -- I mean, when you consider other music coming out in 19 fucking 86, this is ridiculous. So, that's cool. But as far as thrash metal goes, this is pretty one-note in an already limited genre. There are moments where we get some thoughtful musical ideas (and of course these lads are great musicians), but it almost always devolves into single note and single beat spamming-spasms. Gets old quick. And frankly, that's about all I have to say. Fave tracks: - Master Of Puppets - Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - Disposable Heroes - Orion

They’re obviously very talented but I have no desire to listen to this again.

I get that its an all-time metal classic. If I had to guess I bet this did a lot for the genre. I feel the urge to head bang, but beyond that I don't think I'll ever be too big of a metal listener. Not feeling particularly moved. Master of Puppets track has been stuck in my head most of the day though.

Eh I guess it’s well regarded in a lot of ways but it’s not really my jam

Extra point for being Metallica..

Maybe I like metal music more than I thought

This album absolutely rocks fucking love it can't help but head bang to it didn't listen to this till a fair after it came out but on first listen loved it and still love it today probably my fav metallica album

5/10 I really, really, really don't like this music, but there's no denying it's well done.

The grandfathers of metal

Thought I was a few songs into the album and I realized I was only 3/4 of the way through the title track. Epic. I want to play Twisted Metal on the OG playstation

wow, now here's one i havent heard in forever. pretty sure i last listened to this in my early teens as like, the lowest quality mp3s possible. or most of it anyway.... i hadn't become an "albums or nothing" person by that point so i probably only had like half of it lmao honestly though, listening now, i'm a little disappointed. it's not bad, but as far as thrash metal goes i think it's probably the weakest entry in the genre we've rolled so far. i appreciate the sound and i enjoy the occasional bit of toying with time signatures, but rather than the actual thrash metal my favourite track is the slow and atmospheric "welcome home (sanitarium)". along with the third quarter of "orion", the slow moments are what stands out most to me about the album and i think it's probably because it's the main thing going for it that the other thrash metal albums we've rolled so far didn't have? or at least didn't pull off quite so well. idk.

A classic I used to listen to all the time. 4/5.

When I started this project, now almost 400 albums ago, I did a bit of a deep dive on all 1089 albums currently included in the book and its many updates over the years. Very few albums initially excited me to see their inclusion on the list, and even fewer bands in general drew my interest. Before diving in to album 1, I thought I was pretty well versed in music going in to this project, but looking at this British man’s list of 1089 albums that I “NEED” or “MUST” listen to, I started to think otherwise. Most of these bands I don’t even know, or they pick an album I haven’t heard of before from bands I actually really do like. Usually, and I’ve said this on like half of my reviews so far, if they pick a band I know or like, it’s always the wrong album, almost without fail. So ultimately, my question is this. Do I just have no ball knowledge when it comes to music, or is the cultural difference in importance so vast between a millennial American like me, and a British gent who is probably 2 to 3 times my age, that as a whole, we just listen and prioritize different music?? I simply do not know. But here’s what I do know. There are 4 Metallica albums on this list. For any other band, he would have made us listen to something like LuLu or St. Anger because they were “Bold, different, and really pushed the envelope on what the band as a whole could accomplish”. In other words, they’re absolute trash. Now, I would have accepted something like Load, Reload, or a more recent Metallica album like Death Magnetic. That actually would have been fine. Now, he couldn’t help himself, and did put S&M on here. That’s a bit of a weird one to include, but still a great album in general. But here’s the thing, with most other bands, that would be the only album included on the list, and it would have frustrated me. This is a very, VERY long way to go to say that Metallica is my favorite band. Always has been, likely always will be. Master Of Puppets is in many ways their all time hardest, heaviest, thrashiest album, and it’s one I have played front to back virtually 1000 times now, and I’ll gladly listen to it 100000 times more. Dimery, you did very good to include this album, and thank GOD you did. That is the lasting legacy of Metallica to me. They have fans all around the world, and constantly break boundaries when it comes to being a band. They’re important to me, and this is one of the most important pieces of music that they ever put together. Master of Puppets as an album is 54 minutes of balls to the wall, adrenaline pumping, heart thumping, “HELL YEAH” inducing badassery of the grandest degree imaginable. It’s one of very few albums on the list I’ve already heard from top to bottom before, and belongs on this list more than most other albums. When it comes to what my favorite album is on the site, it might be a close race between this and Ten by Pearl Jam. There’s not a lot about this album I can say that you haven’t already heard before. So I’ll just say that it’s perfect. The singing, guitar playing, drums, bass, vibe, all absolute cinema. And yes, “Master of Puppets” is my favorite song on the album. The lyrics have been stuck in my head since the very first time I heard them, and that intro. Man, when you hear that first riff start up, oooooohhhhhhh boy you know you’re in for something truly great. This is my third of four Metallica albums I’ve reviewed and listened to for this project, with only S&M remaining. Almost 700 albums left to go in general, and I’m left with the unfathomable sadness of having already listened to most of the Metallica albums on the list. It’s going to be a sad day when I get to the last one. To wrap this one up, this album is perfect. A true one in a billion, flawless from top to bottom, and I’m so happy it’s on the list. Whatever album I roll tomorrow is going to have to be perfect, or it’s going to look like trash when it comes to Master Of Puppets.

Maybe I was too lenient on the other metal sludge albums I’ve giving 2s to instead of 1s. The title track, supposed to be an 8-minute epic, is instead a limp, bland snore fest. Metallica seem to be limited in both a creative and technical sense, as the lack of dynamics and the incredibly dull, nearly-unbroken chugging and drum parts gives off the impression of children banging on the same keys of a recently discovered piano. The final section tries to switch things up a little but it’s too little, too late. My patience for this bafflingly popular dreck is exhausted.

Donald Trump.

Probably as good as Metallica gets.

This is THE thrash album and one of the greatest metal records ever. Hell this coud be up there as one of the greatest albums ever made. As a follow up to Ride the Lightning (insane that isn't also on this list) this had some huge shoes to fill on release and it rise to the challenge with 8 fucking incredible songs. Also one of the most strikingly simple covers. It catches your attention with so little and yet perfectly feels like the music held within. Battery is the perfect opener, just gets you pumped up with some extremly fast playing and sets up perfectly just how quick and heavy this album is going to sound. The drums here are ridiculous and of course an insane guitar solo meanwhile James' vocals make me just wanna head band until it hurts. Banger fucking intro. Next is one of the most legendary songs of all time, the near 9 minute masterpiece of a title track. This song continues to keep its relevance all these years later with apperances in other media and its no suprise, this is very obviously one of the highest points this record hits. That fucking chorus and the guitar riff is so peak I can't even describe how satisfying a listen that is. All that aggression and speed his a perfect crescendo and slows into a beautiful melody midway through that doesn't in the slightest kill the pace, more so acting as a bridge before building in to a heavy thudding second half. It feels so dramatic and yet like a full story the entire time, its captivating and yet these guys manage to keep it catchy while never sticking to one lane for too long. The Thing That Should Not Be slows things down a little, but still keeps some aggression. A nice break after the beast that is Master of Puppets that feels a bit ominous like its building to something which seems fitting with the name. Welcome Home is a personal favorite and it picks right back up in speed buidling around a pounding drum beat and screeching guitar solos. very cool song in concept and execution. Again followed by yet another banger with Disposable Heroes, a song my dad used to play alot so its pretty engrained in my mind. That guitar just takes center stage and forces every other instrument to move at its pace and it makes for maybe my favorite track here. It's such a catchy riff to build a song around, but god damn does it hit. The pick up during the chorus is pure cinema especially once James' verse is done and the "You will do what I say when I say" line is memorable af. Leper Messiah is maybe my personal least favorite track, but thats not to say it isn't great. Just feels as though the build to get to that incredible second half isn't as interesting as I would hope, but when the guitar really speeds up it slaps. That things is screeching for its life and it makes this track really come to life. Orion is an instrumental piece that again tells a full interesting story in its progression. I hadn't mentioned him thus far in this review, but this song in particular shows off how great of a bassist Cliff is. He's surrounded by some of the best guitar work of the 98's so he may not also be the most noticable part of any song initially, but the solo here is nice and enjoyale as soeone who typically doesn't pick up bass even on multiple listens sometimes. The intial slow lead in brings him front and center and works as a nice setup to a melodic sound that compliments the guitars well. Finally, Damage, Inc. is a brutal closer. Continuing on with heavy drums and guitars ripping through forcefully to the front this is as agressive and explosive ending to a perfect metal album. Again the fact these guys were ale to make something as fast and agressive as this so catchy and appealing to the mainstream is a feat worth being celebrated. Especailly being able to follow up an Incredible sophmore album with something arguably better. It's relentless, never stopping and settling into safe territory yet its fresh the whole way through with lots of meat on its bones. RIP to Cliff Burton.

JL : 4, Disposable Heroes

Some of the riffs and chords are awesome but the rest is roaring and boring, exactly like all the other thrash metal. I don’t think I needed to listen to this before I die.

I just don't get the appeal of metal, not for me. Battery is okay, but not fussed on rest

#251 - Metallica have always been this band where I like a lot of songs, but I would never go out of my way to see them. It's more of a mood thing than a diehard fan thing. I do not know that I have a favorite album. It was always ...And justice for all, but Ride The Lightning became the favorite after; all of this goes without saying that the Black album was my entry into them. Everyone had that Black album the same way everyone had that Dave Matthews Band album. The Black album was DMB for metalheads. This is a very good album. It picked up more steam for me again after Stranger Things, but really haven't listened to it since then. It still holds up, and I like the same songs, but its not an album I will rush to, like is the case with most Metallica. Biggest Hit - Master of Puppets Biggest Miss - The Thing That Should Not Be ( Not So )Hidden Gem - Battery

4 1/2 Stars: Production is tight. Playing is tight. This album fucks!

Low 4. When you can make music from a genre I'm not a big fan of mesh together well and be evocative without being what I often see as intentionally abrasive, I will give flowers. Generally a tight and certainly influential work.

Favourite song was Orion, also liked Welcome Home

No other album is the same, no other album has this impact, no other album can compare to this one. Master of Puppets will always be the best Metallica album put out there. Blistering riffs, lyrics to rip your head off, melodies that transcend time and space, it's energy get through to people to this day, start to finish is the most a band has put ever. Never in doubt, one of the best albums of all time.

Vibe: majorat in Marauder, iesire cu clasa la gratar Feels like: fake teenage coolness Time of day: dupa medoff Songs saved for later: 0 for this time of my life

I finally listened to this in full for the first time since 2024. :3 I can see why people consider this one of the best albums of all time, but I personally think this is just good, not great. Some songs go on for way too long without adding anything new to the song. Also, it seems like the songs aren't actually about anything and they just wrote lyrics that sound cool, which works for artists like jibral and Nirvana but sounds pretty cheesy when done for thrash metal. I think that's typical of most 1980s mainstream rock music, but that doesn't make it any less tacky. This is one of those albums that are good, but not good enough for me to want to relisten to it. :3

Lyrics were good, instrumentals were not my thing.

One of the best metal albums, bar none ー even for someone who doesn’t listen to metal. This is peak Metallica! 4⭐️

The start of this album always gives me a sound of like epic somberness that I've always liked. It rips into riffs that are awesome. Personally I've always liked Battery most off this album than anything other song. Let's see if this time I'll find something I like more. I will say I don't like the Battery solo much, it's sorta lackluster in a way. I like the crushing riffs more. The drumming sucks. Ah yes, Title track, who doesn't love Master of puppets. Personally I like the serene part of the song after the fast parts, it just has the coolest vibe and I love it. I just realized how much it's sounds like the Doom theme. I will say this solo is great using Van Halen techniques really giving a more metal van Halen then going into a darker version of the main riff is awesome.

The record most people consider the greatest thrash metal album ever made earns that reputation on the strength of what it does with dynamics — the acoustic drops arriving as genuine surprise in the middle of a thrash assault, the mid-section of the title track showing a band thinking about more than pure speed and aggression. That instinct toward light and shade is the thing that separates Master of Puppets from most of what surrounds it in the genre. "Battery" opens with one of the most celebrated album openers in metal history. The title track earns its eight and a half minutes completely. "Orion" closes the record as a melodic, patient instrumental that shows the range at its most unexpected — genuinely beautiful in ways the thrash context doesn't prepare you for. Cliff Burton's bass is the other distinction — a genuine musical voice rather than rhythmic support, his presence giving the record a warmth and depth that ...And Justice for All conspicuously lacked without him. That record landed at three in this project largely for his absence. This one earns four largely for his presence. The Black Album refined the dynamic range instinct into something more emotionally direct and more polished — the purists prefer this rawer version, and the craft argument for Master of Puppets is real. But hearing the seeds of what would become that more accessible approach is part of what makes this listen interesting beyond the thrash credentials alone. A four that the dynamics and Burton earn honestly.

Feels dated now?

I had a week of down tempo music so this is a welcome break.

I listened to this while lifting weights and have to say it's the most I have ever enjoyed Metallica... I feel like the power / speed metal bits were pretty great but I just find the acoustic interlude bits they do come off a little overly theatrical and corny. This is probably a high 3 and close to a 4, but I did like Anthrax and Megadeth more so in comparison this falls in the middle of the scale.

Metallica are one of the few metal bands I actually have some experience with before starting this project. Much to their dismay, I fondly remember waiting hours for my slow dial-up internet to download some of these songs off Limewire in middle school. However, metal never fully clicked for me back then and, when I started this project 548 days ago, I would have probably put metal in my bottom 3 preferred genres. I didn’t like the harsh, screaming vocals, the double bass drumming, and was a bit burnt out on guitar driven music in general. At the time of starting this project, I basically only listened to psychedelic rock, indie rock, and folk. Little did I know, even then metal had already been slowly seeping into my subconscious and this album, specifically the song Master of Puppets being featured so heavily in Stranger Things, was one of the main reasons for me to give metal another proper shot (other influences include King Gizzard’s metal albums, Karl Ove Knausgaard’s descriptions of black metal in the Morning Star series, and this list itself where I’ve enjoyed every metal album more than I expected). I still like all the music I did before, but now I think it’s fairly safe to say I am also a metalhead; I’m even going to my first metal show tonight. Anyways, Master of Puppets is a great album! An absolute classic! I’m happy that after all these years I’ve finally come all the way around to enjoying this music. I also appreciate that they’re not afraid to play with more dynamics and melody than some of their contemporaries who basically just played a loud and fast as possible.

Didn’t really loved the last Metallic album I had, and this is more of their 80s stuff. That faster style of heavy metal isn’t a favorite of mine. I’m sure I’ve listened to this over the years but don’t remember it and it’s not a style I listen to these days. I’ll see how I feel about this one. It’s all so Metallica. Fast hard heavy music. It’s metal alright. Some of the guitars and solos are impressive. I didn’t really like And Justice For All but this one is hitting a little better for me. The title track rocks. That’s a classic Metallica song. Don’t listen to metal at all these days but once explored a lot more of it and this right now sounds better than anything else I’ve come across on this list from this type of music. Definitely enjoying it today. It’s not as repetitive as the other album but it’s does seem to drag out a little too long. Some songs do go on way too long. It’s a bit much at times. First half is great and then seems to lose a lot of steam for me. I was trending toward a 4, but might go 3. Orion is a great instrumental that kind of resets the second half. Tough one to rate. This seems like a defined sound and a definitive album in the genre. It won me over a good amount in the first half but kinda fizzled out for me but the second. Feels like a 3.5 right in the middle.

One of the best Metallica albums, full of big power and energy. Battery is a great intro track

Klassikar!

Står mellom den og The Thing That Should Not Be.

I enjoyed this album quite a bit. I already loved Master of Puppets, but after listening to the rest of the songs, I also enjoyed Battery and Orion.

I know older fans love it, but not me.

i tried but i really couldnt

Thrash metal with ....... prog overtones?? This was obviously their magnum opus before they decided to go over the top with '...And Justice For All'. And then they degenerated into an over-rated heavy rock band. This is great. Self-indulgent, and probably overly long, but generally great. Highlights include Battery, Damage Inc, Disposable Heroes and Sanitarium.

We all grow and change over time. Some things (like double bass pedals) remain the same. Would 1986 Metallica recognize 1996 Metallica? 2006 Metallica? No one knows. 7 keepers in 8 (88%). 1 banger (13%).

Title track is probably the best one on the album. It’s classic Metallica I’m just not that big of a fan

Of course the title track is the best, but Orion was a solid instrumental that I hadn't heard previously.

Even if I didn't want to, I couldn't help but rate this a 5. Not a fan of their politics. And not a fan of all they have put out. But this album rocks from opening to closing. Stress levels peaked, adrenalin pumped. They combine musicality and virtuosity into this mix in a manner few could achieve.

The glimmers of mainstream polish shine through the cracks in their leather and stud armour.

Yeah very metally

Much, much better than other Metallica on this list

Obvious classic, one of the best of all time. Back when Metallica still had it, the creativity and riffs were impeccable

Not my favorite. Liked the sounds, but the songs were long and felt a bit repetitive to me. Not a bad work album, though. I do enjoy Metallica.

All time classic.

I liked this more than I thought that I would

Sorry I'm not doing this
