Masterpiece. Still works as well as when I first listened to it.
Yay!
instant classic, they bring insane energy at their shows and sound amazing at their age. Lars still cant drum for shit though.
A perfect metal record .One of the few albums on here that I would call perfect

Really Good 👍
Nothing really to say that hasn't been said already. It's just really, really, REALLY fucking good. I find that the lesser talked about songs - like Damage Inc., Disposable Heroes, and Leper Messiah - are the best ones. Everything else is still phenomenal, but these are my standouts, and some of my favourite thrash metal songs as a whole. Orion is the only one that doesn't hit as hard for me. It's definitely better than I remember it being though. Maybe it's just beginning to click. Still not their best album. AJFA rules supreme.
Metal!!!!! Yassss ! An amazing metal album.
Of Metallica's first four albums, Master of Puppets is probably the most refined for some newbie's first metal album or for those that don't like the general (because they are scared babies hearing loud music for the first time). Master of Puppets still rules, although my favorite of theirs is Ride The Lightning. MoP was the correct combination of a good sounding [production/mixing] metal album, which if you knew the thrash metal scenes at the time of the 80s, did not exactly have some of the cleanest sounding recordings around. Just remember that without Diamond Head, Metallica probably doesn't get their signature sound. RIP Cliff Burton
yeah scott made me love metallica see if i care
Not a note out of place. Perfect.
master of metal. this album sells... AND IM BUYING ! if I were Eddie I'd still buy this album. FIVE. see, naren?
I've landed back on yet another album which the world of music would look quite different without. Master of Puppets (along with Slayer's Reign in Blood, which came out later in 1986) finally took the sound of thrash metal to the mainstream. with cleaner production than Metallica's previous efforts, an ambitious, quasi-progressive compositional approach (did you know the band wanted Geddy Lee to produce at first?) and more refined lead vocals from James Hetfield, it's no wonder that this album became such a sensation. of course, this is also their last album with Cliff Burton, after which things were never really the same. ...And Justice for All might have even better songs, but it's famously weighed down by its production issues. the "black album" launched them even further into stardom, but at the cost of most of their cred; the rest of it left with Load, Reload and especially St. Anger. for as hard as they tried afterwards to recapture their glory days, you and I both know it never panned out all the way; I think we can safely make the call that Metallica *needed* Cliff Burton. decent 9/10.
Absolutely rips. Insane percussion, trashy fun, shreddy and power riffs, changing beats and trippy time signatures in opener. Great sense of melancholy, menace that acknowledges it's a bit campy, great vocals. So fucking fun to listen to, clearly made with fun and love, great skillful playing. Orion is nuts
havent listend in a long time. even if the gender of preference is changed some things are always iconic
Metallica could not be stopped on these early records man. Love the thrash, and then the more introspective pieces.
Very good Classic Defined the thrash metal genre Not my favorite Metallica album but top 3 for sure
Already listened to, great metal album
Metallica at their finest. Although I am more partial to Slayer in terms of thrash, this is obviously undeniable. Before they started writing songs that repeated parts incessantly to fill an 8-minute runtime, the songs here bother to be dynamic when they run five or 8 minutes.
This album has it all; fast blasts, epic instrumentals, amazing riffs, more amazing riffs, master pieces songs with melodic solos, and yes more amazing riffs!
Epic driving rock.
Oh Metallica, super! c
Absolutely peak
Metallica always hits. It brings me back to being a kid, playing guitar hero with my brother. This album is great and has one of my all time fav Metallica songs - The Thing That Should Not Be.
I'm not the biggest Metallica fan, but they are growing on me. Regardless, when it comes to the music, they are talented beyond compare. And this album is the epitome of that to me. Not a bad song on here. One of the best metal albums of all time, even if I probably will never listen to it in its entirety again. Disposable Heros is my favorite. I'll take sludge metal (like Sabbath) over speed metal (like this), but I have to give credit where credit it due and give it a 5.
a classic what can i say 😉
>>>>>> the Beatles This is, without question, one of the single greatest albums of all time. It's a Thrashterpiece. Every song is incredible and intricate and so well done. However, Orion is a beautiful, masterful, amazing song. It shines above the rest and really shows off the bands talent, especially Cliff. RIP Cliff Burton.
Metallica…. Nuff said!
Meisterwerk und mein persönlicher Favorit der Band.
Front to back this record slaps, bangs, thrashes and fucks. \m/etallica
A nearly perfect metal album. Actually, it's a nearly perfect album period.
I'll listen again later as I am prone to do with Metallica, but I don't really need to listen to rate this one now do I?
Aww, hell yeah! What can I say about one of, if not the greatest thrash metal album ever written, other than 🤘
I had Anthrax (the band ha ha) yesterday and wondered if Metallica were overrated. The universe provided me with their best album to compare. It turns out no, not at their peak. This is a perfect heavy metal album. It might be the best metal album ever. I’ll just leave this 5/5 review and let you decide if you agree.
I listened to this album so many times as a young impressionable teen. Metallica has long been part of the soundtrack of my life. Say what you will about them nowadays, this album absolutely slays. Learning the "Master of Puppets" riffs on guitar was like a rite of passage for any young guitarist interested in metal. I hope it still is. MoP is hard, fast, and fun. Lyrically it's got some poignant themes, very war driven which is pretty commonly explored across their discography. Face meters? Gottem. I think this album is around the time Metallica started to mess with more melodic stuff, like the breakdown in "Master of Puppets," "Welcome Home," and "Orion." It's so well blended into their sound, it's Metallica at their best. The band also plays with tempo changes and every one of those hits hard when you come across them. Every song is good, this is a front to back listen. The one that I always forget just how good it is is "Disposable Heroes." Master of Puppets is one of the classics. Instrumental in developing my music tastes when I was young. It was really nice to go back and get a listen of this in, it's been years. Absolutely a 5/5 album.
A classic
Hell yeah! Fantastic guitar work!
Foudational metal album, and it's as good as its reputation.
i love this album this album got me into metal a couple years back one of the greatest metal/rock albums of all time
Rocked
I tried getting into Metallica a few times before but the song that finally clicked for me was Welcome Home (Sanitarium). It's still my favourite on here to this day though I appreciate the heavier stuff now too. Although they went on to be huge and I like some of the recent albums, they were never quite the same after Cliff. The ambition of Orion and then the distorted bass swells which open Damage Inc are the sort of thing non-onr else would have attempted.and I love it all the more for that. I never saw them with Jason in the band, but did see them in Antwerp on one of the tours for Hardwired and they played Sanitarium which made me a happy guy, as much as a song about mental illness can be said to make you happy! Also although they took a lot of flak for the way they treated their fans over file-sharing, Lars has ultimately been proven right in that streaming has been bad for the livelihood of musicians. I think they evolved their view of theor fans and the gig I went to felt very inclusive and welcoming. They also helped me a great deal by putting up old shows on YouTube during the pandemic when we all needed a bit of escapism.
One of those albums I could just listen to, and not do anything else. No weak songs, some obvious heavy hitters. Coherent in style for the whole 50mn but not boring to me. A classic, genre defining album for a reason.
Perfect trash metal
Another classic!
Absolute masterpiece. Good argument this is the best metal album of all time, and no argument that is the best thrash metal album of all time.
I am note a hardcore metal fan but this is really good. I listened to the s and m album a lot, and the title track always have me the goosebumps
Contender for best album ever IMO
Coming back to this album, I have to say that it clicked finally. Prior to this journey, I never could get into Metallica. Now, this is becoming one of my favorite albums to listen to. It’s such a perfect album. Every song just hits hard and sticks in your head. The instrumentation is heavy, fast, and tight. I have become a Metallica fan and I have this amazing album to thank for that.
Aqui o Metallica já era a maior banda de Thrash do Mundo. Esse álbum é matador! QoA Cloudscape.
Maybe greatest full album of all time
This was AMAZING! Disposable Heroes is one of the best songs I've ever heard, hands down. This album just makes you FEEL something man, something carnal, innate, uncontrollable, with such powerful lyrics that just about anyone can connect with. While it wasn't perfect, it had one of the best openers I've ever heard, one of the best songs I've ever heard, and high high high HIGH highs. Do NOT sleep on Master of Puppets!
But a masterpiece of an album. That thrash that they patented with the growling vocals, fast yet still melodic guitar, and excellent drums.
My favourite Metallica album. Perfection. Seen it live many times, sounds of my youth.
0 songs added to my favorites. Will listen again on better speakers.
Pastor of muppets
There are very few albums that seem to mark a ceiling for an entire genre — records after which the common consensus is simply: it doesn’t really get better than this. Master of Puppets is one of them. I’ve always had a soft spot for Ride the Lightning, mostly because of a handful of truly world-class songs (“Fade to Black” above all). But returning to Master of Puppets with focused, repeated listens — often on excellent headphones — has noticeably raised my estimation. This album is not just great; it is remarkably consistent. There are hardly any weak moments. If I have to name one, it would be “The Thing That Should Not Be,” which starts promisingly but never quite takes off. That’s about it. One immediate difference with its successor is obvious: this album has bass. And not just a little. Cliff Burton is everywhere, and he dominates the record in the best possible way. Knowing that Burton died during the tour for this album — thrown from the band’s bus during a crash in Sweden and crushed beneath it — inevitably colours the listening experience. He was an extraordinary bassist and songwriter, and it’s impossible not to wonder how Metallica’s trajectory might have changed had he lived. Musically, Master of Puppets strikes a rare balance between brute force and structural ambition. The title track is rightly famous, with its almost prog-like architecture and shifting sections (one wonders how much Rush was being played in the rehearsal room). The album opens ferociously with “Battery,” whose gentle acoustic intro is obliterated by staccato thrash riffs so tight they still sound alarming decades later. From that point on, the album never drags, despite running close to an hour. Two more highlights stand out. “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” is, for me, possibly the album’s finest song — already something of a metal classic by the late ’80s. And then there’s “Orion,” the instrumental centrepiece. Metallica were unusually strong at instrumentals during this period: “The Call of Ktulu,” “To Live Is to Die,” and here “Orion,” which is unmistakably Burton’s showcase. His distorted bass intro, the mid-song bass passages, and the surprisingly lyrical playing in the slow section reveal a musician with far more musical depth than the genre’s clichés would suggest. Lars Ulrich, by contrast, remains functional rather than inspired here — especially in that slower middle section. One can’t help wondering what Neil Peart might have done with it. The album closes with “Damage, Inc.,” mirroring “Battery”: another deceptive calm before an onslaught of razor-sharp riffs. In the end, it’s quite simple. If you have little interest in thrash metal but want to hear one album that shows the genre at its absolute peak, look no further. Master of Puppets earns its reputation without effort, apology, or nostalgia.
Holy shit? I'm not drawn to thrash metal at all, but this is a 10/10 listening experience. The riff-to-song ratio. The mammoth drums that seem to hit almost a hair late. It's fucking fun. I don't carry a lot of anger, so this record makes me want to head bang and dance around more than fight someone. But the urge is just as strong, and I think it comes from the same primal place.
Let’s fucking go dude.
I honestly think that if anyone were to listen to only one metal album and no other, it should be this one. Seriously how does it get better than this. Insanely tight riffing that ranges between brutal, majestic, morose, and downright filthy; actually audible bass that growls through the mix; and James’ vicious vocal delivery. Meanwhile we hear some of the most demented guitar solos to be put to tape in the entire genre. The Odyssean songs themselves are incredible, full of twists and turns that never tire. The lyrical subjects are as malcontent as their delivery is impudent. Perfectly encapsulates the ridiculousness of metal. No fucking notes. 10/10
Never gravitate to Metallica but I found this to be a compelling listen, the key and beat changes made it interesting throughout. Some commentary to which was artfully done and didn’t take away from the heavy ass sounds
One of the best metal albums of all time. Flawless, heavy and creative. The Number Of The Beast and one or two Megadeth are the others on the very top.
Masterpiece
Listened Before? Y Possibly the greatest thrash metal (and metal in general) album of all time. It is certainly in my top 3. Pure precision and aggression from beginning to end. Perfect. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: Master of Puppets
A masterpiece
Pure metal from start to finish.
After a string of dull boring albums oh god yes! absolute masterpiece of an album, Great way to start the day.
This is the kind of album that makes me hyped and say 'FUCK YEAH'. Love it. Probably the best of the 281 I've had so far.
I never really enjoyed Metallica early on - I think I was too young and, basically, they were too scary. Angry music, big angular fonts, black - lots and lots of black. I liked my rock to be more jangly, more indie Clearly, I was an idiot.
Metal up your ass
A truly great album. I'm never unhappy when the title track shows up on shuffle. I remember discovering it for the first time with my brother as teenagers and we always loved it. Didn't hear the rest of the album until much later, and didn't give it a good shot on first listen because it's significantly less polished than what I knew of Metallica on the radio. I re-explored their early history when the Blackened Recordings Remasters came out, and I love this. Clearly starting to explore progressive composition before the riff explosion that is And Justice for All. Love this album.
Peak thrash metal. Enjoyable to imagine how much better the music would be with a more competent or creative drummer.
It is *the* Metallica album for a lot of reasons. They really do sound great here and much fuller than on "...And Justice for All" (no shit!). Classic riffs, the explosive energy they have always been known for and really elevated songwriting compared to a lot of early metal. Orion is a bright spot by far - I listen to a lot of primarily instrumental heavy music and Metallica is far better at this than they give themselves credit for. Maybe it was the Cliff effect, I don't know but I wish they would give this sort of song more opportunity in their discography. The harmonized solos and downright groovy bass go perfectly with the drums which have that awesome slappy Lars sound. This song alone is worth the record if you ask me. 5/5, total classic!
very excited to give this a 5 knowing that my girlfriend gave it a 1. this album is pure cocaine and i have never been happier to see an album after days of listening to glam rock acts
One of the most influential and greatest albums of all time. Metal wouldn’t be what it is today without this album. Master Of Puppets is perfect. Favourite songs: Orion, Sanitarium
Its the quintessential Metallica album. One of the greatest metal records of all time. Not much else to say that hasn't been said already.
Love it. Angry car rides.
Sweet
That thing is a masterpiece! You can’t listen to it all the time. But when you are in the mood for it, you can’t go wrong. From the first song to the end, great heavy metal that is musical and hard driving!
melted my brain. hope my carbon atoms end up in new metallica guitar picks.
Probably the greatest Metallica record, or at least the most consistent one. Filled with great riffs and insane solos. Classic. 9/10
awesome
Every track is a banger, no fillers. Only Rust In Peace comes close in terms of trash greatness.
Not first time listening. 4.5 I really liked this album. I don't listen to a ton of metal, but have listened to this before. It's a little difficult for me to put this in context since I'm still early in this listening project, but this feels like one of the better (best?) albums on the list. All of the tracks here are great, fast, and tight. I think one of the things that stands out to me is how the songs dont get boring, despite using mostly the same sound.
Despite badly mixed crazy good album. Just explored how outstanding master of puppets was. Shoutout also to orion which is kind of arty.
A striking graveyard image inspired by the Western classic 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly', the untimely last hurrah for one of music's greatest bass players and 54 minutes of the most ferocious, unrelenting heavy metal ever all comes together here to create a work of art that has inspired every metal band since its release in 1986. What more can you say about 'Master of Puppets' that hasn't been said already?
Unless you count Led Zeppelin, I haven't spent too much time listening to metal - it's always just felt a bit too dark, too aggressive for me to want to listen to routinely. But I have mostly enjoyed what I have heard from Metallica to this point, so I was excited to give this album a listen. Coming away from this album now, while I still don't think I'll be turning this on regularly, I can't help but be impressed. One shift I have been trying to make throughout the course of this project is viewing album-based music more like classical music, where there are different "forms", each trying to achieve different aims. And while metal music may not be my preferred form, there is no doubt in my mind that this is one of the best examples of it, certainly the best that I have heard.
1st listen (10/19/2025):The fast-paced, harsh, and rather simplistic vocals of a couple tracks (especially the first and last) set me off, but I couldn't help but be enamored by the production of this album. Pure artistry. I don't think I'm a headbanger, but a couple of these tracks (especially "Orion") were pure glee. Amazing album overall. 2nd listen (10/31/2025): Enjoying the vocals more this time around. I think I like it more than last time. I'll give it 9/10, 5/5.
This album changed my life. Found a bootleg cassette of this album in the street when I was walking to school in 7th grade. Never heard Metallica before and it blew my mind. Got to school art class and asked my stoner friend Steve who this band was. He laughed at me
Amazing throughout. Timeless.
The best album ever made? The weakest track is Leper Messiah, a track that would be the strongest on almost every other album. The whole album has such a great mix of melody and intensity, straightforwardness and complexity. I had almost forgotten what a great listen this is.
Is this the best album ever? I might think so
One of the most iconic metal albums of all time.
If I had to sum it up - this album is absolutely legendary. For many people "metal music" is equals to Metallica. At first I thought it would be hard to decide on a rating for this album as I thought that 20 years ago it would, without doubt, be a straight 5/5. The impact of it is undeniable. To me it probably is the most iconic of all the albums Metallica has written. To give a proper rating I decided to give it a full listen as I don't remember the last time I did that. And it's still great. My taste has evolved and gone way past listening to strictly thrash/heavy metal, but this album delivers. The musicality and overall musical skill of the four shines in this one. Just listen to Orion, for example, or the melodic, bluesy solo in Master of Puppets. So, after all these years, I still have to give it a 5/5.
Rocks
🤘
5 out of 5 Essential classic metal. MofP and Justice for All were like no other. Close to perfection.
The greatest metal album of all time.
Probably biased from my history and childhood, but this remains one of the best Metallica albums, and probably one of the best metal albums. There is a lot of depth in the songs sound, and they just 'feel' good to listen to.
Oh man, been waiting for this one for a while! I'll just say it because why not, this is an album of perfection! I think the first time I listened to this album, I was about 8 or 9. Even since then, Metallica has been one of my all time favorite bands. It's hard to find a band that was so young make an absolute classic twice (this one and Ride the Lightning)! It is crazy how much this album really changed the trajectory of the band, even more so since on their European tour for this album, Cliff Burton died. It is an album that really shifted the direction of Metallica forever. But, while I think that Ride the Lightning is probably their best album, Master of Puppets is for sure tied with it. I just think on a musical level, this album can't be beat. While I really favor Jason Newsted for his energy and live presence, it is still really devastating that Cliff wasn't there for their later projects because he really was almost like the third guitarist. Like the way he played bass was unbelievable. Seriously, who else other than Les Claypool or Lemmy could solo on a bass? But anyway, this album is metal perfection. Even though I've listened to it so much in full, I still gasped the moment I saw it on the generator. It is incredibly entertaining and something that everyone should listen to. Trust me, it is quite the experience and I love it to bits and pieces! Also, I don't think I have had an album yet on this generator where all the songs were my favorite from the album. But could you blame me? It's a flawless album in my opinion. Favorite Tracks: Battery, Master of Puppets, The Thing That Should Not Be, Welcome Home (Sanatarium), Disposable Heroes, Leper Messiah, Orion, Damage Inc. Rating: 5/5
The greatest thrash metal album of all time. Master of Puppets is top 5 Metallica song, and it ain't 5th. I'm personally a bigger fan of Ride the Lightning, but I recognize that this is the better album. This is absolutely must listen to before you die (now Metallica and S&M better be here, too).
It’s been way too long since I’ve listened to this one. The Black Album will always be my sentimental favourite since it was my introduction to Metal but this one for me is their best album. The title track speaks for itself but the likes of Battery and Welcome Home (Sanitarium) are absolute classics as well. Top Track - Master of Puppets, cliche choice but justified.
A really enjoyable album for me, a couple of iconic songs, and errs on just the right side of being metal without pushing too far into incoherent screaming for me.
Aggressive. Classic. Almost punk infused. Highly recommended
nice. A classic, some thrash metal, which I don't usually listen to, but this has some good songs for the gym
Ive heard this before but always enjoy the revisits
Come on
Jeder Song erzählt mit hartem Beat eine Story und der Sound ist so klar man denkt James Hetfield steht vor einem und schreit einen an - Ein Meisterwerk!
Amazing riffs, just a classic
Easy 5. Peak Metallica
Master Piece
My first time listening to this album was on a mission trip to a Christian camp outside of Monterrey, Mexico. We had just been detained at the border crossing for around 4-5 hours. I had flown down with a group of guys the day before to a small town in Texas and met up with some other guys that had been driving a dually with a trailer and supplies from our home church in Illinois to meet up and cross over. I got picked to ride the rest of the trip in the dually. Windows down. Dark two lane road. Blasting Master of Puppets. It was my perfect first listen to this album and changed the way I saw Metallica forever. This album is the definitive Metallica album. It never lets up. Full of rage and headbanging goodness.
One of the best albums.
holy peak but that one "master" at 3:35 in master of puppets made me jump out of my skin a bit besides that, extremely clean but also goes really hard 9/10
FUCKING LEGEND!
Top track: Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
10/10 metal masterpiece
I can’t imagine being 14 or 15 in 1986 and hearing “Battery” into “Master of Puppets” for the first time (which is only relevant because I was around that age when I discovered metal). This isn’t a genre I listen to a lot anymore, but that certainly doesn’t affect the rating. This album is pretty nearly perfect, and I would do anything to live out the cultural zeitgeist surrounding this release in the 80s. I can’t think of a modern equivalent, honestly. At least not one of comparable quality.
Banger.
Хочу пост-рок альбом от Металлики
Okay, this is just a classic of its genre. Anything else but five stars is impossible. You love it or you don't, I guess.
🔥
🤘🏼 🧔🏻♀️🤘🏼
Really interesting time-signature tweaks and breaks. Pockets everywhere of energetic bursts. There's lots of turns and quick transitions, with enough overarching themes or motifs to keep everything cohesive and moving. Everyone on this is very evidently locked in. I have never actually listened to this album, even though I really liked Metal when I was a kid and definitely was into the Black album and "...And Justice". I just never retroactively made it back to this album before I mostly stopped listening to Metal and moved onto other music. Too bad I didn't 'cause this is the real good shit. Better late than never with this one. Amazing album. Solid as fuck.
great album, masterpiece even. Orion my fave but Lepper Messiah, Battery, Master, Sanitarium, Heroes... The Thing... pretty much every track. its not a skip album. Arguably everyone (except maybe James - what a talent) were at their peak here. Kirk has become a meme but he is actually good here, Lars - also and Cliff was a beast. Probably not everyones cup of tea due to how aggressive it is, but my goodness its a great listen.
OHHHH YEAAHHH!!!!AHHHH!!!.
Top 10 prog album all time
Even non-metal heads will understand it’s a legend.
pulling my strings
This one I know, and quite well. Grew up on it. Absolutely wall to wall bangers here. Influential and also holds up. This stuff still rips.
One of the fews thrash albums that i like, i really enjoy this metallica
Such a great workout album
The best Metallica album on this list. Can’t believe they didn’t include ride the lightning
Metallica did such a good job with Ride The Lightning that going for the 'same vibe, but better' was obviously the right choice. The production is wonderful, it hits harder and it's more melodically varied too. You don't even have to put up with a song like Escape (which is ok on a technical level but clearly mandated by the studio). To put it another way, my least favourite track is Leper Messiah and I can't really think of any actual criticism I could give it aside from personal taste. Well, the lyrics I guess. But they're still uniformly good too. Tangent: The album really highlights how important Cliff was to the band and while I like later records by them, it's not the same. Favourite Track: Welcome Home (Sanitarium) Least Favourite: Leper Messiah Strong Bad Demerit Count: 0
The greatest metal album ever
Hadn’t listened to this album in years. I like the genre less as I get older. Halfway through battery I wasn’t feeling it, so I rolled down the windows and cranked up the volume till my ears hurt. Could barely hear by the time I got home and it was totally worth it.
OH SHIT!!! Let's go!! Fuck Battery goes so hard!! the whole album was FIRE!!! 5 stars.
Me engancho y aún no me safo del todo
Ride the Lightning is my favourite album of all time and this is a close second
If you like thrash metal, this is a masterpiece. If you don’t like metal, you won’t like this. If you are curious and don’t know which album to start with, this is probably the best album by the biggest band in the genre
knew it already, loved it already, still love it. 10/10
This will always be one of my favorite albums of all time! Top 5... desert island... the whole 10 yards type stuff. It has so much personal significance to me and there is so much that I could say but in the interest of brevity... you just can't get much better than this, IMO. (9.9/10)
Not only a defining album for the band, but a cornerstone of the gene. Raw, powerful production and cliff killing it on the base. An absolute classic that still holds up today. Honestly, nothing more needs to be said.
Leper Messiah
I love how the explosive sound envelops you. I often find heavy metal music relaxing in a strange way and this album hits that spot massively. I think its that the thrashing guitar is so fast it becomes almost like a white noise. Anyway, im not suggesting this is an album to nap to. The solos and riffs can have my body shaking and my head banging. Unreal stuff. Incredibly brutal at points. The tone of the guitars complements the vocals perfectly. Say what you want about Lars but the way he drives the songs on with an intense, relentless energy is a big part of what makes this album what it is. Sometimes forget just how good Metallica were in the 80s. Favourite track - Welcome Home (Sanitarium) or Orion. 9/10
This is 5. A stalwart album and has definitely stood the test of time. Like Fade To Black on its predecessor, Sanitarium is still the duffer here but doesn’t take the shine off the album too much - not enough to dock it a star. I can’t see many arguments against this being a classic.
It’s simply a fantastic metal album.
Classic
This is great. And it shouldn’t be. There’s only two talents in the band - Hetfield is a rhythm player who ranks with Townshend and Malcolm Young and cliff burton certainly changes the bass in metal. Lars invents of course thrash drumming despite being not good at it. And Kirk does what he does. This should be awful but it’s awesome. 50 stars.
Although I was never a big fan of Metallica, “Master of Puppets” is undoubtedly the pinnacle of thrash metal. Since it is one of the few "all killer - no filler" albums, I find it difficult to single out individual tracks. Nevertheless, “Master of Puppets” (every serious guitarist has learned this song—including Eddie Muson, of course ;) and “Orion” (every serious bassist... you know) still stand out! It doesn't get any more legendary than this!
Battery, Master of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - ♡ Disposable Heroes- 👎 The Thing that Should Not Be, Damage Inc.- 🤷♀️ Master of Puppets- 🌟 (the song that is the main star of the album! Notes: • I'm not sure why, but I thought this album was released in the 90's! • the rift in Master of Puppets is just so epic, it always sends shivers down my spine!
Fav
already listened to this but what an AMAZING album. wish i could relisten to this for the first time aaa.
This is one of the albums that I was hoping to get when I started this project. Knowing my luck, I thought this would be my 1,000th album. Thank god it didn’t take that long. Personally, my favorite Metallica album is Ride the Lightning (which is criminally not on here), but this is like a very close second. A twin peak situation, if you will. It’s the beat Metallica would ever be before their eventual turn into the mainstream. There is sheer energy in every track, produced and polished to perfection, with a side of some political commentary. It feels clichéd to say this is where thrash metal really started, but that’s only because it’s true. And it, along with their other 80’s outputs, is what made Metallica’s run legendary. Favorite track: Master of Puppets Favorite track that isn’t Master of Puppets because that’s too easy: Tie between Battery and Welcome Home (Sanitarium). Hard to pick. Other hits: Disposable Heroes, Orion, Leper Messiah, The Thing That Should Not Be, Damage, Inc.
Many regard this as one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time for good reason. An absolute masterpiece.
Sempre bom revisitar o Metallica do Velho Testamento.
i love this album of course
Hey man, this album kicks ass. This is waaaay better than "...and justice for all." They wrote their own check with this thing, any amount of bullshit noodling and butt rock is forgiven. Normally I bitch about songs being too long: nothing overstays its welcome. It doesn't disappear up its own ass. It's just cool and good.
One of the two most glorious albums of Metallica. Nothing to add.
Favorites: Battery, Master of Puppets, Disposable Heroes This album fucking rules. It rips through its whole tracklist front to back like a loose cannon. Pure thrash metal bliss. An absolute must-listen. 10/10
🔪 Master of Puppets – Metallica (1986) This album grabs you by the collar, throws you into a mosh pit of existential dread, and shreds a guitar solo while you contemplate the void. It’s not just an album—it’s a 54-minute controlled demolition of your soul. This is Metallica at full beast mode. No radio polish, no soft landings. Just pure, whiplash-inducing thrash metal with surprisingly literate lyrics about addiction, war, insanity, and—because it’s Metallica—death on a cosmic scale. Rating: 5/5 Short Review: Controlled chaos, razor-edged precision, and more riffs than your therapist can handle. Favorite Track: “Disposable Heroes” – because sometimes you want your anti-war message delivered with double bass drums and a sledgehammer.
One of my favorite albums ever, and what I think is the best metal album ever. Crushing rhythm guitars and soaring leads. The incomparable bass work of Cliff Burton. Dark but unified subject matter. A masterpiece.
Master work
Day 39 I have listened to this album many times before. A classic! Do I even need to say more? 5/5
One of the greatest metal albums of all time and even just albums in general. This is Metallica at the height of their powers and firing on all cylinders. A true masterpiece
classic, thrash metal perfection, the intro is fast and energetic then goes into master of puppets, everything just works and makes sense and falls in the right place, amazing record
88/1001. Megadeth - Metallica 1-5.
Metallica at their peak. Was not into metal at all when this was released, but really liked this album and it still sounds great!
This album is a Stone Cold Steve Austin classic. It will open a can of whoop ass on you. I’m talking about stomp a mud hole in your ass and walk it dry - kinda ass whoopin. Badass album. Every track. Damn near perfect. 1001 album worthy: Yes - 105/195
I prepared to come in listening to this with fresh ears, unbiased, and expected that it wouldn't hold up once I got into the songs in the margins, and as a whole maybe it would come out a 3 or 4. I think I've heard that it's not even one of Metallica's favorites. Perhaps I failed, or perhaps it is really that good, but I can't rate this anything less than a 5—this is something that should be preserved as long as humankind survives. Maybe longer.
This is a perfect album. Unique, genre defining sound, tempo.
🤘
Metallica
Just an awesome thrash album, with enough variety to keep things interesting. Could listen to it over and over.
An album that blew my mind when I first heard it in high school, and one that credibly stands as perhaps the best album by the best metal band of all time - and by extension a good case can be made that its the best metal album of all time. Killer riffs, sophisticated and often prog-like songs structures, and surprising melodic touches. The leaps Metallica was making during this period is extraordinary. A landmark record.
4.5 rym
Yessir
This is a fantastic album. Metallica before they sucked.
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
As good as thrash metal gets?
Didn't realize this was so influential. Have always liked this album, but def isn't for everyone!
Here we go
I pretty much grew up with this album but the most amazing thing is that I find it better with each listen. It's more than metal, it's almost akin to greatest symphonic music out there. There is a layer of deep and beautiful sadness under some of the tracks, particularly the instrumental, Orion.
Battery is one of the coolest Metallica songs
I've already listened to this a bunch and it's one of my favorite albums ever. Probably as peak of a metal album you can get as it incorporates so much of what's been done up until this point but also retains its own identity. To create a record with pacing this good is an achievement. Truly a masterwork of a record.
Back in the 80s, at the height of glam and a decade drenched in glitter and shine, thrash metal dragged music back to its punk roots, with raw and primal rage. It’s violent, no doubt, but it’s not glorifying violence, it’s calling it out. And beneath all the fury of this album aimed at war and injustice lies a celebration of meaningful lyrics, sharp precision, and masterful composition which make it one of the few gems of the 80s and a relevant album up to today (see the incredible youth reaction to Master of puppets after it was featured 38 years later in the TV series Stranger things). Even tracks that might seem secondary hide killer riffs and solos that still hit hard. Nevertheless, and to be honest, Master of Puppets isn’t my top pick from the thrash era, nor from Metallica. Yet, it blew me away back then and I still enjoy it today. It is easily one of the few Metal albums everyone agrees on, a true cornerstone of the genre, its influence unquestioned, and still the most popular of them all.
This is my first time listening to a full Metallica album. I absolutely loved it.
Lars taking drum lessons really was the secret sauce for Metallica to make a perfect album. And I’m not even the biggest Metallica fan in general! If only he had continued to take those lessons….
A classic
It’s insane they allowed the first half of leper messiah to make the cut
Not a metalhead and this is certainly heavier than what I'd normally listen to, but really enjoyed it
This album is like the time you and your two best friends were all on family skiing trips to Wanaka at the same time. Your parents are all out to dinner together, and have left you at the motel. Your older sister gets you a box of beers to share and you are experiencing what it is like to let loose for the first time. A girl from a couple of rooms down the hall joins you, and after telling you how she’s into Radiohead, you end up hooking up and doing hand stuff for the first time while Master of Puppets plays in the background, etching this song into your memory forever. This is an awakening. These halcyon days are a turning point in your life, for all the right reasons
I really wanted to not give this album 5 stars. I obsessed over this album as a young fella but have not really listened to it in a long time. Assumed I had moved on. No! This album slays track to track.
One of the best thrash metal albums and definitely influential in heavy metal in general. It was my favourite Metallica album but I prefer Ride the Lightning these days, but will still give this 5 stars. The title track is flawless.
Masterful.
Oh man, crazy memories come flooding back for me listening to this album. I saw Metallica open for Ozzy on this album's tour. 1985, Brendan Byrne Arena in NJ. In the parking lot, fans were divided between the old guard of Ozzy Osbourne and these new up and coming metal studs, METALLICA!!! You would hear a fan, yell, OZZY!!! and an opposing fan, scream, FUCK YOU!!! METALLICA!!! Once inside the venue, the atmosphere was tense. People were shoving each other and some guy shoved me from behind. I was like 15 and I just turned to the guy like, "I don't want any trouble man." We made it to our seats alive and Metallica hit the stage and just blew the roof off the place! This was one of Cliff Burton's last shows as well, so I feel privileged to have seen them with him on the bass. I mean, talk about an opener! These guys had the whole crowd whipped into a frenzy! When Ozzy came out, the place absolutely exploded! People were somehow ripping or cutting(?) seat cushions out of the seats and they were flying everywhere! Ozzy grabbed one off the stage and threw it back into the crowd and yells, "ROCK 'N' ROLL!!!!" I'd say Metallica had that crowd warmed up.
Simply one of the best metal albums ever made. Kick ass all the way through.
OMG!!!
Surprised I enjoyed this a lot , you can really hear the influence of Ennio Morricone on Hetfield and it really benefits the album. It is light years ahead of similar stuff I’ve heard from the same era (such as megadeth but I’m no expert).
Masterpiece! My favourite Metallica album. Easy 5 stars.
Amazing record
A classic
best trash metal album ever
Idem à hier. Que serait le Métal sans les petits bébés de Metallica?
these dudes used to feel like my cool uncles and now they feel like my cool grandpas theres some fuckin chugs on here
Just yes.
Pastor of Muppets
This might be the greatest metal album of all time. There isn't a single boring second or a wasted moment. The fact that it was made by a group of 22/23 year olds that displayed unparalleled musicianship, songwriting, lyricism and overall "FUCK YOU WE'RE METALLICA" energy is just unfathomable. I could listen to this daily and never get bored. 5/5 A MASTERPIECE
AMAZING. I was thrilled to see this album pop up today. No notes; this is my second-favorite Metallica album and stands the test of time.
When Metallica was good.. with the hair. Great album.
4.5 for me, feels a little polished compared to Ride the Lighting which is the magnum opus in my opinion
Everything a thrash metal album should be. I think I prefer Ride The Lightning, but this is still incredible.
I loved this album in high school, but have since fallen out of Metallica fandom. I haven't listened to them for a few decades, so when this album came up, I was afraid I would cringe at what teenage me loved. I am happy to say that I still feel like Master of Puppets holds up.
Fav songs: Battery; Master of Puppets It's Metallica. They have at least 4 great albums and this is definitely one of them. No notes.
Easiest review ever.
The best album from the most influential heavy metal band of all time.
Like many other people this album was my gateway into the world of metal music. I don't listen to Metallica very often anymore, but this is still a really great album. Mid 5.
OOOO THIS IS NICE, I feel like a strawberry in an alcoholic beverage when listening to this.
i love metallica. no other comment
Was beginning to wonder when we'd see this. I have quite strong feelings towards this album as it was one of the first albums I got when starting to get my own music when I was 13 years old or so. A friend had downloaded it and shared it with me. First time I heard it I was thoroughly unimpressed. But it grew on me, and having listened through it more times than I can count, it's impossible for me to give it anything resembling an unbiased review. I think this must be Metallicas best album, maybe in contest with the 'Black Album' and '...And Justice For All'. All songs except perhaps 'Disposable Heroes' and 'Damage Inc' are really good songs, with 'Master of Puppets' and 'Orion' being the ones transcending the rest by a small margin. The main riff in 'Master of Puppets' is just so iconic and never gets old. And the downbeat bass part of 'Orion' with the guitar solos is just pure class. Makes you wonder how Metallica would have sounded if they hadn't lost Cliff Burton early on. I think it shows great breadth in their composing that they are able to make tasteful slower parts feel as strong as the more upbeat ones. The almost mexican sounding acoustic start of 'Battery' is another example of when this works really well. You have memorable and catchy riffs everywhere, and just overall high octane metal where Hetfield's singing complements the music well with perhaps the most metal voice of all bands I've heard. Grounded, and more dirty, as opposed to Dave Mustane (Megadeth) and Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) which are arguably better singers, but more opera like. I guess if I have to nitpick on some things, it would be that the songs start to sound the same after a while. The main riff of 'Leper Mesiah' for example sounds very similar to the chorus riff of 'Master Of Puppets'. In addition the palm muted open E pumping can get a bit old, but that's just metal I guess. This is a 5 star album to me without a doubt. Almost all songs are really strong, with a few standout ones that are stellar. It has also aged very well, and still sounds good today. I'd image many new metal albums are still measured against the standard of Metallicas earlier albums. Even though Metallica feels a bit like a dad band today for me, this is probably one of the first albums I'd suggest if anyone wants to to get into metal.
I’m slightly disappointed that this made the list instead of, say, The Black Album or Ride the Lightning (which is my favorite Metallica album). I remember being about 13 on a family road trip listening to this. My mom and I were in a rental car while my dad and his friend were in another. My mom struck a deal: I could control the music as long as I didn’t complain about her driving. I still feel a bit sorry for the amount of Metallica she had to endure, but she kept her end of the bargain, and I kept mine. Anyway, this is a really solid thrash metal album. “Master of Puppets” probably has one of the best and most recognizable metal riffs ever. There are plenty of other great songs too, “Battery,” “Disposable Heroes,” and “Orion,” to name a few. Still, aside from “Master of Puppets,” Ride the Lightning is the better album, with tracks like “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” And if you like long instrumentals, swap “Orion” for “The Call of Cthulu.” It’s not an album where I think every song is great, but it’s still a classic and a clear five-star.
ГОСПОДИ КАК ЖЕ ЭТО ОХУИТЕЛЬНО 9/10
Metal as metal should be
Hit that sick guitar riff 🤘
Mettelica hoe mettelica hoort te zijn. Stuk voor stuk lekkere gitaren.
Always been one of my favorite albums. There’s not a single skip song
What a sympathy!! 🤘
Once upon a time this was a 5 star album. Teenage arguments of whether this or Ride The Lightning was better even though Kill ‘Em All was my favourite. It still holds up but just means less to me now. Hetfield is one of the all time rhythm guitarists and devastating that Burton died not long after this, his bass playing hints at directions they never went down. Writing this I’ve changed my mind 5 stars still
Probably their best work, 8 tracks over 55 minutes. Thrash with healthy nods to a more mainstream metal.
One metal album to rule them all
Dad music but good. Favourite Songs: Battery, Master of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Disposable Heroes, Orion. Least Favourite Songs: Leper Messiah.
Listened to this a million times. Still one of the best albums of all time. RIP Cliff
Long time classic!! A fitting tribute to Cliff!!
I love this album and that says a lot because I don't like thrash metal.
Never cared for Metallica before, I liked a few hits. But this album is amazing. A few lulls but pretty great overall.
A few of the songs are a little too long but still a classic
Fav song: Danger Inc. Mind-blowing guitar work
The only tracks i hadn't Favorited was "Leper Messiah" and "Damage, inc." so you can say i'm biased in this one. I don't consider my self a Metallica fan but this album is really one of their best. People who don't listen to metal will probably not like this one but this album is a part the late 80s metal culture and does not only serve a musical role but a historical one as well. So i would say this album really ticks all the boxes of "must hear before you die", because it is not only about being accessible to everyone or amazingly written but the cultural impact. The only bad about this album is Ulrichs drumming
I love this genre and this album
Awesome metal rock. I love the title song, especially.
One of the best
\m/ Thrash Metal masterpiece. It can't be overstated how great and important this album is. Essential to any metal afficionado collection \m/
Favorite songs: Master of Puppets, Battery, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Disposable Heroes, Orion, "Damage, Inc." Least favorite songs: if forced to pick, The Thing That Should Not Be 5/5
9.5/10 pinnacle of metal along with paranoid
Perfect metal album

The nostalgia for this album really couldn't be beaten by many other albums. I remember listening to this cassette on my buddy's boombox when we were 9 or 10 years old.
Best trash metal album in history
5.5 - Legendary
What a monster of an album. Intense and loud while still remaining incredibly melodic and intricate. The guitar sound is brutal, thick and fuzzy. Everyone has heard the title track and it's one of the best metal songs ever written, but there are some other fantastic tracks here. 'Orion' is a pretty beautiful instrumental, 'Welcome Home (Sanitarium)' starts off like a ballad but soon builds into that trademark Metallica speed and 'Battery' opens the album in a fast and furious way. The biggest "surprise find" I guess you could call it was 'Disposable Heroes'. I obviously already know of the track, but something clicked when listening this time. Lyrically it's your standard "war is bad" but it's more about how replaceable soldiers are. Just throwaway men. There's a little riff just before the chorus that is phenomenally good. I absolutely love the chorus where Hetfield shouts "You will do what I say when I say / You will die when I say you must die / BACK TO THE FRONT!". One expendable man dies, replaced immediately by another. Such a good track and a new Metallica favourite. Solos are blistering, I've always absolutely adored James Hetfield's early vocals. Probably Metallica's magnum Opus (though not my personal favourite of theirs). There are a couple of less good tracks for me, but I think the really good ones carry this to the highs of five stars.
Excellent, one of my favorites already
GOAT album
genre definer that kept me interested the whole way through. not my cup of tea but can appreciate it and its impact
SO good, lots of layers - you hear something new each time, so it never gets old.
Love me some classic Metallica
Battery, master of puppets, welcome home, and Orien had such a huge influence on my guitar playing style. 5 stars for those tracks.
Thoughts before listening: Yes! Absolutely killer album that was very influential in the metal scene. Review: Definitely a classic that still holds up today. There are only 8 songs on this album and each is a staple of not only Metallica but also the heavy metal genre as a whole. To many people Metallica is heavy metal, and this album is why. My favorites on this album are the title track, "Battery", "Orion", and "Damage, Inc". This is an easy 5-star album.
One of my favorite Metallica albums. No songs to skip. Just turn it on, turn it up, and let it go
This album is insane. I love it!
Tremendous album from a tremendous band. Spent many hours learning the riffs and solos. “Orion” alone deserves more than 5 stars, but hey-ho.
Great, classic metal
One of the greatest metal albums of all time. I love Metallica!!!
And this concludes this project's Metallica albums. Would have preferred "Ride the Lightning", personally, as it somehow has a bigger place in my musical biography, but I'm glad to end this - after ratings of 1, 4 & 3 - on a high note either way. Easy 5, this one.
A true classic. Easiest 5/5
Only one of my favorite albums since I first heard it more years ago than I care to mention. Even Metallica will tell you it's their best work. The riffs slay, Burton's basslines crush it, and the drums fall in perfectly with everything else. James's lyrics are thoughtful, exploring the variety of ways humanity can be manipulated. Really love that there's a whole song about Cthulhu too. It's all killer, no filler. Truly perfect.
April 15, 2025 Album #590: Master of Puppets by Metallica Genre: Thrash Metal, Progressive Metal Commonly hailed as one of the greatest metal albums of all time, *Master of Puppets* is an album that I’ve been eyeing for a while now. I never got around to listening to it sadly, however I’m very happy as that has changed today. *Battery* is an absolutely perfect album opener, its opening acoustic section to its sudden change to electric guitar, into speeding thrash metal is an example of the amazing song progression on this album. Although, the simply iconic title track is a golden example of song progression. Its iconic guitar riffs and melodies, lyrics on drug addiction, and rawness make for an all-time metal track. *The Thing That Should Not Be*’s chugging guitar and cultish lyrics are very foreboding. *Welcome Home*’s switch up to chugging and fast riffs is immaculate, and its opening sets the stage greatly. *Disposable Heroes* is a fast and damning criticism of war. It’s the heaviest song on the album, and it’s incredible. *Leper Messiah* is a critique of corruption in religion, and its instrumentals are great. *Orion* is an amazing instrumental track and it really does take you on a journey. *Damage, Inc.* is a heavy and fast closer that makes for an excellent finale. This album is *not* upbeat, however its takes on its subject matter are engaging and interesting. This album is an all-time classic and it hasn’t aged a day. The elaborate guitar and drums are excellent as well. I cannot recommend this enough, it’s incredible. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, 10 Favorite Tracks: Battery, Master of Puppets, The Thing That Should Not Be, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Disposable Heroes, Leper Messiah, Orion, Damage, Inc.
Glaube das ist das beste Metallica Album
Possibly the greatest metal album of all time. Slightly edges out ..And Justice For All, if only because the production here is far-and-away better than the production of AJFA. Even with its EQ quirks here and there. This is Metallica at their peak strength. This is a perfect album. 5 stars.
A band at the peak of their powers. Put this on, turn it up, shout and stomp around to the opening track..."BATTERY!"... And fall in a heap nearly an hour later, exhausted but with a smile on your face after thrashing through some epic masterpieces. Speed fueled riffs interspersed with well crafted orchestral respite, building again to crashing crescendos, peaking over and over. The overly entitled and whiny pricks they would turn into are still in the future. Right now life is good. Five fucking stars.
Keep this away from the microwave, because this is pure metal! A masterclass in the genre. I don't know how I grew up in the 80s and had never heard this album.
Pure metal genius!!!
One of greatest metal albums for me! 10 stars.
It’s Metallica. It’s no black album but
RIP Cliff. The world is a less joyful place without you shaking that big ol' mop of yours. For metal fans, this is the real shit. For non-metal fans, just try to hang in to hear James Hetfield's right hand of darkness. He's one of the most incredible rhythm guitarists to ever do it. Lars is still an ass.
Metallica's best album, and one of the greatest records in heavy metal. Ambitious, clever, energetic, powerful, diverse, characterful and explosive. For as heavy and hard-hitting as this album is, it is still covered in hooks - extreme enough to satisfy, accessible enough to enjoy. The production is easily the album's weakest point, with Cliff's magnificent bass muffled as per the Lars/James mixing handbook. The album's highest point (of many peaks) is when Cliff takes over - heavy metal bass was never quite so transcendental as in the middle of Orion. Favourite tracks: all of them - with Disposable Heroes, The Thing That Should Not Be and Orion above everything else. Orion. Did I mention that I love Orion?
Loved this album since I was a kid. It's perfect.
They were one of the biggest bands in the world around this time for a reason!
Not much to say here. One of the crowning achievements in the genre. Even if the drumming isn't great.
One of Metallica's best albums with tons of killer riffs and tracks and none of the toxic masculine energy? Hell yeah
This is arguably the best album by a landmark band. The musicianship, the songwriting, and the production all are top notch. I'm not a metalhead by any means, but this album hits for me.
10/10 perfect metal album
Don’t think I ever noticed the whispered backing vocals in Master of Puppets. The Thing That Should Not Be is so underrated. It feels kinda weird to say since this album is so incredible and iconic as a whole, but I still feel like this track does not get talked about enough. It’s happened a lot, to a lot of bands, for forever now, but it’s still funny that Metallica is one of those bands that military dudes are super into. The same band that has the song Disposable Heroes. Lmao. For some reason i always think Damage Inc. is on And Justice for All. I don’t know why. James kinds sounds British when whispers the title.
This album is undeniable. Their production of influential music at this period is amazing.
Master my puppet
Solos manchmal bissi nervig aber immer no a klassiker
Yeah, I like it. Sorry, haters.
Yeah man
If this is what Satanism is like, then sign me up.
What can anyone say? A masterpiece
Solid, technically impressive, memorable, achieves what it wants to achieve. I feel like there are bits and pieces that are less memorable than they'd like to be, and the album itself is not my personal favourite, but it's a 5 on excellence.
Never actually listened to a full Metallica album before and I'm realising what I've been missing out on. Can see why this is so well thought of. Fav tracks: Master of Puppets, Orion; Damage, inc
Wanted to give it 5 . But talked to Anete and decided to still give it 5
