I'm not sure I love the tinny vocals on a lot of the tracks that are common for that genre in the 80s.
The Yo Yo Man is a bop though.
Enjoyable. Crisp vocals and enjoyable riffs. I also got a bit more into the lyrics of this and found a new Christmas song. I don't think I've ever listened to an album all the way through that it a story about a character - so an interesting first for me.
Thoroughly enjoyed the energy of this album. Interspersed with some real crooners but I don't mind a soppy love song tbh. Trying to Get to You and I'm Counting On You are personal faves. Definitely an era defining release.
I'm surprised You're Crazy isn't more widely known. Best song on the album - those guitars!!!
Have to say a couple of their songs are pretty bad - but overall a really fun listen.
Semi-enjoyable mum-rock
Beautiful voice beautiful lyrics beautiful guitars - love u
Beautiful lyrics and songs overall... probably each best enjoyed for me in isolation. September Song is obviously a stunning piece.
Till There Was You is quite nice but I'm surprised this album is on the list - it's quite forgettable. Constant harmonising lol.
I love Steely Dan.
I'm cruising in a Porsche alone a California coastline lol.
Loved every second of it. Never thought I'd like a Live album so much. Jealous of those who were there!
Weird ending but pretty nice overall
Does Anthony Kiedis think he can rap?
Again I think in isolation these songs are a bit of fun at a disco. Just don't love as an album listen
No notes
Not sure where I've been to be missing this album and his VOICE!
Inspired me to see if they were touring
Too many scratches and samples for me. Some bangers in the mix though.
I find it really hard to comprehend that this is/was rave music
I'm not quite sure what the album is trying to be - I like it - but don't at the same time(???!!)
It's good yeah - not in the top 1k in my book
Loved the title track - quite enjoying these storytelling albums -s'pose the music I usually listen to doesn't have that
Not my genre - 1-2 good songs
I imagined myself as the Snowman in The Snowman throughout listening. Transcendental
Too many crooners
I clearly haven't given them enough time for god only knows why.
Shite lyrics, boring music, and whiney voice
Yeah I'm into this
High octane from start to finish - really good.
Ploddy noddy dad music
I think she's overrated.
It was OK - not as good as his other stuff
Surely pioneers of the belting rock and roll scream?!
Wiggling around listening to this. Wonderful energy throughout
Easy listening but not really my thing
Beautiful words. Can imagine myself gliding through overgrown fields in the countryside listening to this.
Dreamy pop and belting ballards. Much fun
Not thrilling
So feel good - another one you can't help wiggling all the way through to
Beautiful pure voice. Enjoyed the sop throughout this album
Many bangers. Wish I was twisting on the dancefloor.
It's xmaaaaas!
One or two good songs but it's not really iconic enough to be listed on this platform
Actually more of a fan than I realised. Props.
Jolly good fun - too many negative reviews
Love the artwork on a side note. Peaceful listening although probably not his best
I wish I could dive straight into those piercing high notes from silence.
Dreams in Samba
80s clean theatrical singing-styles really don't fill my cup
I forgot about this guy
This really isn't very good, it was quite difficult to get through in honesty. I think of plenty other female R&B artists that would be a better choice
The contrast of the lyrics content and sound is initially quite jarring but in a good way? Sweet guy. It is a slightly repetitive-sounding album but I can put that aside
No notes
I want to throw myself around a dancefloor
I really like this genre but it's quite a forgetful, long album where the songs all merge into one
Too much story telling and I actually don't like his voice that much
Not over the top happy clappy and complex in a very pleasing way
Quality not quantity defined
Very naively hadn't appreciated just how much this album has influenced the dance music I listen to today. Absolute belters. Full Throttle in particular took me back to festivals from my late teens.
Tragic and beautiful
Gets less annoying as it goes on
Prefer this version of the Stones compared to the other albums I've heard so far
Think this album should have featured at points in the TV show Misfits
An album that lacks many points of interest
See death; ending.
You definitely have to mentally prepare for this one.
Just because I m ew lots of the words doesn't mean I liked it...
Go the Crazy Horse
Lyrics have not aged well.
Interesting
Would love to see the ft. Band live!
Couple of bop bangers
The artwork was not giving me much hope but I was pleasantly surprised. Listenable
Love to see the feature band live!
Confused, too many songs and too many influences
Solid grunge album
Would have enjoyedsmashing into other people seeing them live
It's taken about 8 years but I finally get it
Rocky and Bullwinkle
Sounds like it was made in someone's bedroom, and not in a good way.
He was going through a tough time wasn't he
A rating purely on the music - not his best
Epic from start to finish
I wanted to jam with this more. I love whimsical floaty voices but this didn't quite hit it for me.
It's nice
This feels massively underrated - soul food
I think this gets a lot more hate than it should be. I think that they have been unfairly lumped into the Britpop genre. I never really listened to them growing up, but having given this a first go, I'm pretty impressed?
Some of the songs in isolation are great. I thought I'd like this album more than I have
I just find their stuff really on the nose and boring
Songs in the Key of Excellence
Too much girly screaming prevents this from being a 5* - the sound quality is amazing.
Someone was deeply obsessed by someone that rejected them lol.
Unforgettable tunes on this album. I love the echoey reverbed samples, combined with slow broken-beats. Reminiscent of sensuality and hedonism in the dance.
Lost interest towards the end - still pretty fun though
I thought this intersection between rock/country and hip hop was quite fun. One of the first?
Such uninteresting pining lyrics throughout
A couple of the songs blue into eachother but a class act
Funny storytelling but generally quite crap musically
La la la la li la la
Why does this feel like a Disney movie soundtrack
Oh to be you, Caroline
I am generally a big fan of breakbeat so this was pretty enjoyable - not the best - but perfectly listenable.
Pretty great. I was expecting a bit more grit from their vocals though, they sound almost too clean.
I thought I was going to the this, but I was pleasantly surprised. Dreamy
So many classics - good to put a name to the noise
Easy-listening. Bit repetitive after a while but I spose that comes with the genre a bit
Feel good protest music
The same four chords - relatively depressing. Extra star for Tiny Dancer
Love Berlin
Can imagine all the nineties pop girlies screaming for him at gigs - what a heartthrob lol. Perfectly ok-pop
Underrated and ahead of its time!
Not particularly interesting - despite one of my fav bars in London being named after it
Carried by "When a Blind Man Cries"
Bad band name
A noticeably intense depiction of love
The soundtrack to adolescence
Sittin' on porch
Featured on every British 00s romcom. So pleasing though
I quite like the more moody and hazy tone of the vocals this album against some of their other cleaner stuff
I respect the cultural significance of this album and I do enjoy the genre more broadly, perhaps in missing a decent sub I'm not enjoying this as much as I thought I would
Rate so much I have the vinyl
Classic
Struggled to get through the cheesy lyrics
Genre-bending album. Keep flip flopping between 3/4 rating
Smashing - really recognisable how much more 'modern' music is influenced by their sound
Middling
Mix of Coldplay and bono - snooze. 1 good song maybe
A pretty safe album - gorgeous voice of course (see Adore). None of the tracks are particularly standout
Not my favourite of their but still epic
Why is this getting so much hate - fun easy listening. Love hearing the English voices against a classically American hip-hop sound.
So so rich - the album titled song is probably my least favourite on the record!
No notes - insane, progressive, beautiful
Enjoyed this being less theatrical than their other works - and what felt like more emphasis on the band as equals
Steady pop
Not my bag tbh
Haunting voice but otherwise not particularly interesting
Started off a bit Sandy but gradually got better and better - lots of sexy metaphors
Pretty iconic - enjoy the little interludes throughout this
I was a barbecutie this weekend
I'm really not bothered about "Baroque pop"
Love
A cathartic listening experience - they really have a unique sound and so nice to hear some times I've not heard for a while!
I quite like his voice tbf... it's fine and a bit samey after a while
Not really into baroque or circus-style percussion so not a huge fan.
Not their best - envisage myself doing the rumba in a suit to most of these tracks
Got more into it mid-way through. Some quite Madchester-sounding tracks at points. Quite enjoy that youthful hedonistic sound.
Prefer their more mature sound
I could listen to his storytelling and voice over a campfire all night long
Timeless grooves
Quite boring unfortunately
I just love Live Through This so much that this album doesn't really compare - bit too pop-y
Intense yet tender - I love this
Really envoking my mind's eye with the storytelling
Starts off well but gets a bit too operatic and dramatic towards the end
Love the intensity - need to see the film now!
Peters off a bit towards the end but this is proper indie goodness
Lay me on the beach of a tropical island pls
The most safe 'pop' record of the lot
Love the smut
I think this has an unfairly low average score. I think that the hybrid rock/blues/country (at times) sound sets the band apart from the usuals from that era.
One of the first CDs I bought - once in a generation artist. Soulful, witty, profound
She was a sweetheart wasn't she with such a glorious voice. Very easy listening. I could have made up some of the rhyming of the lyrics though.
Slightly too scatty to be a 5
Really into ambient experimental house/trip-hop at the moment. It is bad to say I prefer the newer stuff that has obviously taken influence from this LP?
Twee and easy listening
I like some of the trip-hop tracks. The others are a bit 90s/00s romcom movie
A rating purely on the music - outstanding
Moody headbangers tune after tune
Not really my vibe
