Starting to develop a theory that jazz is just one big in-joke. 1. A handful of talented musicians piss about on their instruments for an hour and pretend it's deliberate and finished. 2. A load of people hear this stuff and think it would be funny to pretend it's amazing and transcendental and somehow communicates complex human emotions, via the medium of 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘴𝘢𝘹𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘯𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘨𝘶𝘺𝘴 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺 𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘳𝘶𝘮𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘰 𝘪𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘮 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵. 3. Those people then start talking down to everyone who hears it for what it really is - just a load of incoherent noise - until they feel silly about not 'getting it'. 4. Those people, feeling silly, join in pretending it's amazing. And they continue the in-joke without realising the joke is on them all along. Well I'm not laughing. And I refuse to join in.

Not for me

sehr jazzig. aber irgendwie gut.

Etwas jazzig

I am the wrong audience

This is the definitive cliché. I don’t really know much about jazz, but I have this album and a kind of blue by Miles Davis thing however, I do like this. I was reading a book by Michael Chabon and he mentioned it a bunch of times in it and I kind of listened to it while I was reading that book and it sort of got into my head that little melody of them singing a love supreme echoes and all the instruments and it’s kind of a nice cool sounding thing although I still find most jazz sort of perplexing maybe you just have to listen to it over and over again until you get it I don’t know. I don’t have that kind of patience sometimes.

maybe I'm a philistine when it comes to jazz music because I don't understand the hype here I'm sorry.

I love this album. There are a lot of very smart people that have broken down why this is an important album but for me it’s just so listenable. Maybe there is some deeper reason why I find this album so mesmerizing. All I know is that when the album ends, I just want to hear it again.

I think I’m not grown enough to appreciate Jazz. It feels so random

Truly a master.

lovely music , i liked it

When I first got into Jazz this was one of the first albums I heard along with Miles Davis Kind Of Blue since then I have heard a lot of Jazz and I still come back to this one, it really is a masterpiece every artist featuring on the album seems like they are at the peak of there powers plus with a decent audio setup it sounds amazing and elevates it even more the seperation of instruments is quite amazing which is one reason to listen to jazz the recording technique is amazing this is an easy recommend

Greatest Jazz Album of all time. This is not even open for debate. This album has been my escape at the end of the day for more than 30 years!

Does not resonate with me

I mean I don't hate it, but this old Jazz just sounds like background music to me. It's all very samey. It obviously takes a lot of talent and has its place, but just not for me. 2.5/5

The correct amount of jazz probably.

One of the major landmarks in Jazz music. Loud and complex, the album reflects as much musicianship and virtuosity as it does sublime beauty. I do appreciate how concise it is, probably my favourite Jazz record of all time. 9/10 [KEEP]

Very obviously one of the 'supreme' jazz recordings of all time - no list is at all complete w/o it - but what makes it so special is that it's also one of the great religious albums of all time. I use 'religious' as an open label here to the degree that it speaks to the unbelievers among us who yet hold onto some sort of spiritual or sacred truth. I count myself as such an unbeliever. A Love Supreme is yet also 'religious' in the closed sense, i.e., this is one of the great Christian - evangelical Christian - outpourings of heart & soul e'er recorded. It just so happens to be a jazz classic as well, a standard of wild simplicity (that addictive refrain) & unhinged virtuosity. In jazz, I don't think anyone had as much to say as Coltrane - who spoke so much thru his craft.

Classic jazz

It was ight

Thanks, but no thanks.

Me and Jazz are going to have to agree to disagree. Again.

Solid, relaxing, great jazz. This is one of the standards for the genre where even if I don’t listen to it all of the time, I can appreciate how perfectly everything comes together. Great stuff.

a bit to jazzy but cool

i think its alright dont get me wrong i am not the bigest jazz fan but i honestly like a more mellow tone of jazz

noisy (positive)

Really good jazz album. 5/5 in its category, 4 - 4.5 for me.

long songs, short album of jazz. easy to tune out of and have in the background

Not a jazz fan and didn't go in with much in the way of expectations but I genuinely loved this.

good ol twerking music

One of the best jazz albums ever pressed! I already own it on vinyl and love playing it. It is frantic and beautiful all at the same time. Jazz drums and piano are just so good and Coltrane is one of the best. I know for the casual listener it is a bit free form, almost Spinal Tap "everyone solo" at times. Give it a few listens on a good sound system or good headphones and really just meditate with it.

that coltrane guy knew a thing or two about how to do a song yup

This was a spiritual experience, felt like I was at a good church not my old church

an absolute masterpiece, and difficult to overstate its influence and importance. if you don't get it then listen again, and pay attention this time. 5/5.

Kino.

Incredible, soaring, love the chanting. Listened in the bathtub

More less.

A jazz album for musicians. If this was supposed to make me feel something, it failed miserably. The chanting at the end of the first track was weird, and didn't seem to add anything. The music just seemed to noodle on and on, meandering around the mountain of John Coltrane, but not leaving a trace behind. My rating: 2/5

The musicianship stood out and this was a loud jazz album... power jazz, yeah. Definitely got the feeling of sitting in the middle of 4 open practice studios a bunch, but it pretty much worked. This is a few clicks to the left of my favorite jazz but glad to have some Coltrane under my belt.

song 1: ok jazz! i didn’t except it to not have lyrics, which i’m not used to as i have only listened to albums with lyrics so i don’t really know what to think about it but it does sound good though. OH, the a love supreme chanting ok!! I liked that, excited for the second part. song 2: i’m hoping this has some lyrics… or maybe not. I like the fast pacing in this one song 3: 10MINUTES, i was wondering why this album is 32 mins long and only has 4 songs. Loving the drums in the intro. I’m liking the outro song 4: i think this is my favourite one i do appreciate jazz as a genre but i don’t think it’s for me though like i need LYRICS

perfeito

Helt okej

Just was not in the mood for the cacophony this morning.

I like her voice and some of the arrangements but it’s not for me

308. nice

Moody and atmospheric. Not my favorite of his albums but pretty close

It was good. Some parts feel repetitive. Definitely an album I appreciate more than I actually want to listen to.

While I certainly can hear and respect the craft, there’s just so much of it that isn’t cycling back to a theme or melody. It’s just gets lost in a long, jumbled flourish that never ties back to anything solid. Very challenging to casually enjoy. More theory than groove.

It's nice, but not too much variety. Sounds like Flea's 'a plea' may have taken inspiration from this album.

A LOVE SUPREME A LOVE SUPREME A LOVE SUPREME

Idk man Feels way too pretentious

Beaucoup aimé le 1er titre, j'ai été un peu moins sensible au reste

Well, it's Jazz and I don't have a clue about Jazz. Oviously all of them are very skilled musicians, that's a plus, but at this point in my life I do not have time and am not willing to get into it any further.

Am I a late-blooming jazz lover? I think I might just be! Normally, lengthy genres that rely more on pure musical composition to tell their stories struggle to engage me, through no fault of their own (e.g., I have yet to touch drone and ambient music much). But there's something about jazz... it's such a collaborative and soulful effort that it tugs at the heartstrings every time. And "A Love Supreme" is MUSIC distilled into only four tracks.

Lo respeto

Start to finish fabulous. Absolute jazz.

4/10 lwk too abstract

The drums were driving me insane by minute 5. Sorry, congrats on your technical ability but that was not enjoyable.

loved it, cooked dinner listening to this and made me feel like i have my life together

Pretty classic Jazz album. Not quite a 5-star life-changing album, but great nonetheless.

I prefer Art Pepper over John Coltrane. Given the fascinating parallels in their lives and eras, it is disappointing how overlooked Pepper remains in the broader music community. All reviews completely ignore his connection to this music, even though he was heavily influenced by A Love Supreme and explicitly incorporated Coltrane's style into his own later work. Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section would be a solid addition to this list.

4/5 - Very good. Perfect for at home on a record player. Not the easiest to work to. A bit to scatty

Classic example of a methodical, complex jazz album which simultaneously feels like an achievement but which leaves me as cold as a rock. I really struggled to enjoy this and also struggle to see how others would, which is a rarity for me even with some of the albums I've awarded one star to previously. This obviously isn't shit but I really don't like it at all.

The start of A Love Supreme , Pt III - Pursuance is quite intresting. It was one of the parts that caught my attention. The drums at first, then the piano afterwards. cheff kiss. Kind of Jazz i want to hear live. But if i have to choose a favourite it is A Love Supreme, Pt II - Resolution. The trumpets and the piano play well together. I specially love when the trumpets don't get to agressive, which i think, happens in the other 3 songs.

pretty peak ig

This should be a 5, but I think this is an album I wish I was cool enough to just want to play around the house but I don't think it's that album to me. It is an album I would be ecstatic to hear out and about. It is as good as people say, and I think one of the more accessible albums of this kind of jazz

Descent jazz album. Not to weird and reasonably easy to listen to. 3/5

a love supreme

I’ve heard a lot said about this album so I was looking forward to listening. Unfortunately it just goes over my head I’m not a big jazz fan. Not for me

Couldn't imagine enjoying Jazz like this album made me. I love form and structure but Coltrane was able to make such beautiful music without standard versions of those things. Also, the chanting on Acknowledgement was pleasantly surprising. My other favorite track was Pursuance.

Made me anxious

an absolutely stellar album from start to finish. i mean, it's only 4 tracks and really, even then, it's only one. regardless, it is technically impressive and delightful to listen to. thank you mr coltrane!! ಄ albums remaining: 934 ಄ albums I agree with being on the list: 68 [+1 A Love Supreme] ಄ albums I would consider for my list: 34 [+1 A Love Supreme] ಄ albums I would not include on my list: 121

Wow, he's very talented. He died not too many years after this was recorded. Not an everyday album to listen to for my tastes but it's really excellent work.

Jazz can be difficult to latch on to for me. I preferred parts 3 and 4. 3.5 on the enjoyment scale, but this a renowned album that deserves a listen and a spot in this list.

Masterful

Good stuff. Another reminder to listen to more jazz.

This album deserves much more, my attention that I got this time around.

Not my kinda music usually but still ok

Reminds me of my Poppa again but not my vibe

- Jazz is such a fun genre - oml this song is 10 minutes long and there's no words

I don’t understand how jazz is so 50/50. It can literally go from the worst noises I’ve ever heard to something that genuinely puts me in a trance.

As a very casual fan of classic jazz, I've listened to some of the albums you're "supposed to" listen to, but somehow hadn't heard this one yet. I really like it and it is absolutely worthy of its reputation.

I really thought I would like this more than I did. Idk man these tracks just felt so cold and clinical too and had none of the warmth and energy jazz usually does. It felt like I was sitting in an old grey scale cabin waiting for some new medical treatment that I am Guinea pig for. I really think it was the percussion that was giving it this quality tho tbh it may just be bc I’m stressed rn. I did like the saxophone tho, that was great. Maybe I just don’t understand it and don’t appreciate how technically interesting it is music theory wise but it just did not sound good to me. man I really wanted to like this but I wouldn’t listen again…or maybe I would when I’m less stressed out. 2.1334/5 Ok…I may have been unfair to the album, I think the headphones I was using may be to blame for why I thought it was cold. I’m listening to Genshin ost rn and when I was using the other headphones it sound a lot colder and less vibrant that usual. When I switched to my AirPods it sounded better so I’m going to give it an extra 0.5 and I’ll probably listen again sometime to be fair. So new rating is 2.6334/5

Pure jazz.

Arghh!! This one feels like a terrible score and i feel mean. Do i respect this album? Yes. Do i appreciate its quality? Totally. I can completly see that in terms of playing, composition, mood and influence this is a 5 star album! Did i personally enjoy it? Erm, not really. It was short but it really wasn't my sort of thing! Part 4 was quite nice.

Solid jazz

Don’t like it. I have a couple of Coltrane albums I like a lot. But not this one.

Brilliant musician but it's just unlistenable. It just grated on me for 30 minutes. Call me uncultured but jazz is just not for me.

I quite enjoy a bit of jazz, especially Bill Evans and Miles Davies. Considering this is album is considered one of the greatest in all the lists it didn't really work for me. I think I prefer piano jazz as the Sax in this was too much for me and I just couldn't enjoy it.

at turns ecstatic, solemn, querulous, and strident; both searing and soaring. a physical manifestation of will. deliberate bending of virtuosic talent into a cohesive whole. personally i don't consider this to be the best jazz album ever, but if you do, i can't fairly say you're wrong.

Very nice, but this kind of music requires that you are very focused. Maybe on a different day I would have extracted more from it. Today I just thought it was very good.

One of the great classic Jazz albums. Only 4 songs. Can't pick just one. Pitchfork: 10 (2015 reissue with extras) Rolling Stone: Top 500 albums #66

Nice and easy background music. Perfect for a lazy long breakfast.

don't really get it yet? it's nice and all but i don't understand it completely. i know i'll probably come back to this in the future and think it's the greatest thing of all time, but for now it just gets a 3/5

I just know that this is a really important artist and Love Supreme is the only title of a work by John Coltrane that I've heard of. Love Supreme being the entire focus of the album (in four parts) I'm just going to have to rate this highly. Enjoyed having it on in the background, relaxing and intriguing.

I'm embarrassed to say that this is the first extended listen I've ever done of anything by John Coltrane. His name certainly carries a lot of weight, though, so I went into this expecting a lot. It delivered. The level of virtuosity across all instruments here alone was staggering, and it all came together into a wildly experimental but cohesive work. I was teetering on a four, but I know that this will continue to grow on me, so a 5 it is.

uhhh. hard to really talk about this one. it's an experience that is impossible to distill into words. in some sense, that might be evidence of the divine. pretty great though. deserves to be one of the 1001? obviously yes

this is great for the background but hard to focus listen. I guess I am the jazz normie
