only reason this was picked for this list and not the superior Emmerdale and Life is obviously the central track Lovefool, which is admittedly one of their best songs - and one of the biggest pop hits of the modern era. That's not to say other parts of first band on the moon don't come close to the magic of that track. Actually most of it does. The flute-laden opener sets the tone perfectly, and the stretch around Lovefool are all imo all on par with that song (especially their cheeky Ironman cover and the sugar-grungey Losers). It's a great album, hell it's the Cardigans. I will glaze them till the end of time. But let's not joke around and pretend this is their best album by any stretch of the imagination.

hot take but planet caravan is the best track on here

any major dude will tell you is a JAM it's very hard to dislike these guys, but im not totally head over heels either. it's very very well performed and an surprisingly easy listen, just not terribly memorable outside of a handful of great catchy tracks

reading about how influential this album is really took it up a notch for me, but it's still at times kind of (charmingly) awkwardly 80s. not my usual outing when it comes to hiphop, but i do really admire the more positive attitude of the album, it is silly and very fun

bit of an unfortunate one, because this is a very interesting album that's just been swallowed by the legacies of its contemporaries. Apparently this was a very influential album for the underground at the time, but today listeners seem to dismiss it compared to other, better remembered rappers of this era eg. MF DOOM, El-P, Deltron 3030. Does it still sound as influential as it once apparently was? Not really, but to say it's aged like milk is just not true either. There's a lot of interesting stuff on here here, especially in terms of Ladd's production, which is notably more abstract and "clanky" than other underground/backpacker tapes from this era. The beats shift between skittering electronica, processed classical and jazz samples and some pretty interesting pop sample loops spun into something that resembles industrial rap, and even Warp-esque ambient. The main problem for me is the vocals, as well as the runtime. The lyrics are... fine. Kind of run of the mill semi-intelectual, overly conceptual and nerdy, but they flows and delivery stay mostly in the same lane across the whole tape with just a couple notable exceptions (Planet 10). For a runtime over 1 hour, it becomes hard to decipher one track from another. Still a very interesting piece of history for underground rap and industrial plunderphonics.

absolute insanity. for prep i listened to an ornette coleman record, and while "the future of jazz to come" is certainly a challenging listen in itself, the marriage of free jazz with agressive grindcore spirit here is next level. it does slightly overstay its welcome on first listen, but i can see myself considering this record perfect in the future. either way i want to delve into the crazy world of john zorn now

first half, especially papa was a rollin stone, is absolutely essential, a lot of the second half i could take or leave though

a bit overly sanetized production at times, and the lyrics arent the most interesting og neuanced thing in the world, too often detailing very generalized observations and experiences, but this is still a very colorful and loving pop album, even moments of melancholy is painted with either shades of joy or tranquility (happy & sad being the most explicit example) one of the few modern albums on this list that actually justifies its inclusion as a genuine modern genre classic

probably one of the most lively and fun jazz records out there i mean just look at the happy lad on the cover
