Album Summary
Bossanova is the third studio album by American alternative rock band Pixies. It was released on August 13, 1990 by English independent record label 4AD in the United Kingdom and by Elektra Records in the United States. Because of 4AD's independent status, major label Elektra handled distribution in the U.S. Bossanova reached number 70 on the Billboard 200. The album peaked at number three in the UK Albums Chart. Two singles were released from Bossanova: "Velouria" and "Dig for Fire". Both charted on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in the U.S., at No. 4 and No. 11, respectively.

#292 Heard Before? Countless times. Notes: - i must love Pixies songs, because I hate how all their albums sound. The drums especially, but also the vocals drowned by shit guitar tone. - i had a dear friend who was a great musician and also a compulsive liar. he briefly convinced a few of us that he had written "Velouria". i told him it was his best song by far. - try learning to play any of these songs. they are fascinating. Verdict: In my imagination, there's an album between this one and Trompe Le Monde where Frank Black and Kim Deal agreed to share songwriting and lead vocals, and then hired a better producer, and it's my favorite album ever. Listen Again? Of course, but not soon.
The best thing this exercise has done is get me into The Pixies.
Not Bossanova smh
Follow up of Doolittle which was my introduction into alternative rock. Maybe a bit more polished as it starts with a gentle guitar/surfrock instrumental, but typical pixies elements of hard/soft are present as well. I have this album on cd, vinyl and saw them touring this album few years ago and got their RSD live release of that tour in 2024. Pixies will remain one of my favourite bands and this album is definitely another 5.
Puro clickbait, puro chucu
This is a culmination of their previous work, resulting in a more refined and approachable album. They still lean into the loud-quiet formula they created, which remains heavily influential for future alternative bands. Black Francis can belt, croon, and scream with the best of them, and I love when Kim gets to sing; they also create some great harmonies together. Joey never fails to produce fantastic guitar tones and killer leads, while Kim's bass drives a cool rhythm section. It features a couple of my favorite Pixies songs, like "Digging For Fire," but overall I prefer their earlier works—for me, this is not one of their albums I would have included on the list. They are a hugely influential band, and if you like alternative music from the '90s and '00s, then you should listen to this and their earlier albums. But it's the Pixies and it sounds cool as hell, so it still gets 4 stars!
Generique de film. J'aime bien .
not a big punk fan, but i enjoyed this
Not my favourite Pixies album, but still, it's the Pixies.
Not bad.
Good melodies with a touch of punk!
Listened
Its pretty good, its not the best Pixies album. It does have some of their best songs, but roughly half of it is filler.
A little too grungy for me.
Too old. Boring. Remastered sounds way better than original.
Fun little album. Feels generic today but probably didn't back then.
i like how alternative it is. i love the bones, i love the instruments and the sounds they make and how they play different sounds at the same time, and at different times too. some of the songs are junk but like half of these songs *really* hit. favorite song is Dig for Fire or Stormy Weather. very soft 4
I'm gonna level with you guys, I kinda zoned out halfway through this. This is the first full Pixies album I've heard, but I heard a good handful of songs (and have seen them live even!) and know their deal (womp womp). Like, this was fine, I probably could learn to appreciate it more over time, but it just slightly hit today.
kind of formulaic. still some bangers
I don't know the Pixies' oeuvre all that well, so enjoying this more than Surfer Rosa might be a bad take that gets you executed by a firing squad of proper fans. But I had fun! 🌞 The review describing it as "surf rock for goth kids" feels really right – it's a fun, kooky, Cramps-ish vibe that I like.
Really must try to give every day's album more than 1 hearing. On second play of this one I recognised plenty of catchy tunes. A bit short on lyrics though - q.v. "Stormy Weather" - but I quite liked all the tracks except "Rock Music". An extraordinary noise for that one but mercifully short. But then most of the tracks were quite short...well they are pixies after all!
Not my favourite Pixies record but I would say possibly the most listenable (I could be wrong here) ans still amazing. I just love the Americana, UFO, weirdo vibes to this album. Dig for Fire and Veloria are absolute bangers.
I'm glad this record has less shrieking, but instead I found a lot of it dull, and I miss Kim Deal being more involved. 'Velouria' is a fantastic song, though.
Great album. Frank's voice is so versatile, sometimes it gets you thinking, 'is this still the pixies?'.

3.2
I loved "Doolittle" when I first heard it early this year ("No.13 Baby" pops in my head frequently). It's something about the abrasiveness, messy guitars, and groovy prominent bass parts that seem to attract me to the Pixies. The music is of a grunge-y punk variety. This album adds in more eeriness and some space rock elements (but not enough to take away from the Pixies sound). I think I like "Doolittle" better, but this was excellent just the same. I enjoyed "Velouria" and "Is She Weird" the most.
Not the best Pixies album I would not have included it on the list but hey not my list not my book, just my opinion.
A very good alt rock album that only pales in comparision to the two game changers that came before it.
Weird but kinda fun
Pixies have ten albums, fourty seven of them are in this list. Anyway, this is the first I actually like.
Seems like they're getting tamed but still incredible stuff.
This is the third album released by the Pixies in 1990 and is classified as alternative rock and grunge. This still has Pixie's quirky pop post punk rock with surf characteristics but less so. Instead, it is more produced/engineered than the first album and is more rock/grunge oriented with big guitars and slower tempos. It was clearly an influence on grunge and Nirvana in particular. Black Francis (guitar) and Kim Deal (bass) sing (but noticeably less of her) and Joey Santiago plays lead guitar (he's great). Top songs: Rock Music Velouria Is She Weird All Over the World Down to the Well Blown Away This is a really good album but I prefer the first because it was quirkier and more punk oriented and had more of Kim Deal.
Turns out that I quite enjoy Pixies afterall Not too shouty and pretty straightforward. It’ll do
Ihan perus rockilta tuntuvaa, taustalla menevää mutta vähän unohdettavaa
That's the 3rd Pixies album that has appeared on here, and I always forget how good this one is. It doesn't utilise as much garagy noise as the other ones but it makes up for it with plenty of catchy riffs and some top tier bass playing from the talented Kim Deal. This album felt like it was over in half an hour. This is definitely one of my favourite alternative rock bands.
Rock
It's good but a little disappointing after Doolittle, the whole thing feels rushed and Kim seems sidelined which is again disappointing after her vocals on Doolittle. Still as Surf rock goes its good just not brilliant
fun stuff
The Pixies have two albums on this list and that's two too many.
Not a big fan, most songs sounded similar
tfw they have pixies on the list but its not even one of their better ones. please tell me there's other pixies on here
Meh
I prefer Surfer Rosa and Doolittle, but this is still good.
Nothing wrong with it. Didn't listen super closely
ni fu ni fa
Meh. Paar missers paar prima nummers. Niet heel bijzonder
Normal
Not my favourite of theirs but still a classic
i felt so edgy listening to this at the train station
great!

Just noise
Not particularly good, but not particularly bad either. Two stars...
Pretty groovy, pretty heavy. I like Anna, All Over the World, The Happening, and Havalina the most. I think the album flow gets pretty bad after the first few tracks, there's a lot of very short songs.
Classic Pixies. I love everything about them. Frank Black is one of the most effortlessly inventive and prolific artists around.
I sorta liked it but sometimes I did not. Idk probably needed to give it more attention than I did
I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would. There were a couple good songs on there, but honestly, I wouldn’t even think about it one more time in my life. I feel like I have heard some other pixie songs that I’ve liked, but they were just on a different album?
I like it. If you want to know more feel free to reach out and ask me about it yourself
This was a very solid album. The highs are super high, like 4-5 star range, but some bad tracks bring down the rating a bit
This is a pretty good album that has one fatal flaw - it is not Doolittle. It is really hard to follow up an album that is essentially a masterpiece. Still any Pixies is still pretty good. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I prefer the debut. No need for extra on this list.
several screamy song on here, did not like these. A few more what I expect from the Pixies which I liked a lot. overall a mixed bag of songs, still a solid 3 stars
Love the Pixies, love this album, all the songs are amazing and my day is made :) (4.8)
Noise with not much to cling to but that's their schtick
was expecting bossa nova
man what a disappointment this one was. i’ve heard great things about Bossanova for a while now, and it starts off promising with the first couple tracks, but almost immediately it devolves into an irritating soup of never ending, constantly repeating “hooks” that somehow aren’t even catchy. the lyrics are also consistently terrible, which isn’t always a dealbreaker, but the delivery is so annoying that it becomes the final nail in the coffin. not the worst thing i’ve ever heard, but not one i’m ever going to revisit either. Favorite tracks: Cecelia Ann
Rated the same as Doolittle but probably prefer the sound of this release
A great listen
1078 - "Here's your juice box and orange slice. Thanks for coming."
4/5
alt rock, with a bit of an odd twist . One of the odd twists is it does not really get started to Velouria.
instrumentals are fire but the full songs are just not for me
Its always the same shut
not for me
Decent album not something I would revisit impressive moments with guitar other than that not an overall standout album
Pixies - Bossanova (1990) Ah this took me back. I bought this on vinyl and then CD at the time. Went to see them at Brixton Academy. Album still holds up. Good, but not as good as Doolittle Best tracks: All Over The World Dig For Fire The Happening ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
(Slow clap initiated) What an album?! So many hits and so hard to believe it was an early nineties album. Loved the heavy riffs and the unique sound. Knew Allison, Velouria, and Havalina before I listened to the album. Fell in love with Rock Music, Allison, Is She Weird, Ana, and Dig For Fire
Nothing productive to say though I’m mildly confused about enjoying this one a fair bit more more than I did Doolittle…
I liked this a lot. First two tracks were brilliant, rest didnt quite live up to the strong start but so it was a really good album.
I liked this. Cool and edgy!
good
For some reason Pixies fluctuate between being all time and insufferable for me. This mostly falls in the latter camp. RYM: N Saved a song: N
Interessant. Schon cool. Nette Ideen. Aber nicht meine Musik. Hab mich ein bisschen gelangweilt...
I like this less than Surfer Rosa and Doolittle, but it’s still a good album.
I love the first four Pixies albums (all the reunion stuff can miss me). This one's really good. Hadn't thought about "Dig For Fire" in a minute but it gives me a lot of joy.
I'd just gotten to like 'Doolittle' and they drop this on me. Not ready for it and goes back to sounding like their noisy phases. Maybe one day but this wasn't doing it for me now .
Avg
I wouldn't say "one of my favorite Pixies albums" because Surfer Rosa and Doolittle are even better and the other albums I just don’t like much. Let’s just say it’s great, almost perfect, filled with not enough known micro classics, and underrated.
Grating or whiny. Sometimes both
Really liked first and last songs
