Solid addition to the Pixies catalog. I wouldn't personally put this ahead of either Doolittle or Surfer Rosa but it's still a great album. Contains some of the Pixies prettier moments with The Happening in particular being a fantastic track. Havalina has some great melodies and acts as a great closer. Velouria and Dig for Fire settle into their greatest hits. I've always found Allison to be kind of annoying but other than that, got no issues with this album. 4 stars

After the last few days this was a bit of a let down. Nothing wrong with it, just a bit flat.

It’s kinda autopilot pixies but it still rips

I like that they let the songs get kind of weird on this. Not as high highs as other albums of theirs but still solid.

I forgot some of these songs existed, truly some bangers on here. Pixies will always deliver

Today is a day of contrasts. First, the generator gives us the worst of the four original Pixies LPs. Now, let's be clear that I call this “the worst,” because it is, but it is not BAD. The Pixies didn't put out a bad album during the Kim Deal era. But this is the one that feels the most rudderless, the least essential. It feels like a weird album to include in this book unless all three of the others are, too. While Surfer Rosa and Doolittle feel like Revelations from the future, this feels more like a reversal deep into the 80s. Look at all that sheen on “Velouria,” for example. It is a flawless 5* song as far as I am concerned, but it's a very different band. That's kind of what I mean here. Even Trompe le Monde, which is nearly Dealless, feels more cut from the same cloth as the first few. But you have the almost surf inflected trio of ladies: Cecelia Ann, Allison, and Ana. You have “Is She Weird,” which approaches the old stuff conceptually, and Dig for Fire, which doesn't but is still a minor classic. It's an album I have come around to quite a bit since I first heard it, but it still doesn't carry the weight of the others (and it has that kinda dead area between Dig for Fire and Stormy Weather). Again, I want to make it clear, this is a 4* album without a doubt. But it's more of a 4.11 while the others range closer to 4.5 to 5. Always nice to hear it, but a weird choice for the project.

Solid background music, but nothing really jumped out at me, strange because I loved Doolittle. Perhaps I had my expectations set a certain way, but this was just ok for me. Dig for Fire, Stormy Weather is good for stormy weather,

Felt about the same about this one as the last Pixies album, but maybe enjoyed this one slightly more partly due to actually listening to it straight through instead of in little spurts throughout the day. Had a fun energy but I'm good with just the one listen.

Yippee! My second Pixies album. Cecilia Ann was a nice intro, and Rock Music was a very interesting heavier track! I thought it carried itself well. I thought that Velouria was a very solid track and Allison, while short was very catchy! I quite liked Digging for Fire! I really enjoyed the mix of track lengths on this album. Nothing really seemed to overstay its welcome at all. I adored Stormy weather!! Such a nice melancholic track. Havalina was a nice way to end things off. I did like this album! 4/5 ⭐️ 162/1089

Kim Deal=Cool Every time I hear the name, Kim Deal, cool usually follows. I learned it from a Dandy Warhols song, Cool As Kim Deal. I only ever knew Where is My Mind? For some reason Surfer Distortion popped into my head half through the album. That's how think this best describes this. Don't know why? Just does. 3

A rock album maybe a bit more toward punk or pop or the 90s. I know the pixies but I don't think any of their famous songs are on this album.

I liked this album a lot. I couldn’t tell you what song was what, but there were a lot of really cool moments throughout. I love the sound of this band.

Velouria, Ana (surfer acronym), The Happening, Havalina. Awesome, understandable why they are considered one of the great bands of their generation. Excited to explore more. I guess I heard a little surf rock in there, something I largely associate with ‘50s ‘60s, but am excited to hear more of its ‘80s ‘90s revival.

Fine, but not something to revisit

Another example of a band being more influential than successful. This, their third album, shows a band who leave you wondering what you're going to get next and this to me is its greatest strength. I like the opening instrumental opening track, which suggests they have a melodic ability in and amongst their alternative noise and dynamic contrast which laid the ground for grunge. I see that the UK took to the pixies far more than their home country, despite the alt rock boom slowly usurping the mantle of traditional big groups in the US. I know a true fan of this band but I am a little unconvinced overall despite some 'moments'.

Lots of short tracks with mostly instrumentals

Nothing special here. This is really supposed to be one of the 1001 albums you need to hear before it all ends? No, certainly not.

The first six or so songs were a little hit or miss but it ends strongly, especially with Havalina

Unfortunately, this was not my type of music.

Pixies albums are a bit of a weird band with me, they tend to be very good in the first half and fall of a giant cliff in the second half. I honestly don't get why that happens, even though I always go in with a open mind. Anyways, this album is less song fragment-y than Surfer Rosa or Doolittle. Just like those albums it has the sickest instrumentation ever, but the vocals sometimes are a bit lacklustre. Frank Black or Black Francis or whatever his stage name depending on the song, perfect or just god-awful, all while being one guy. I find the song "Velouria" way too cheesy, I've been aware of this song before listening to the album from listening to it in curated alternative playlists made for me. I feel like the song is just them trying to make another song like "Where Is My Mind?" and "Here Comes Your Man," that song is a bit pathetic. Would I listen to it again? Probably not. It's underwhelming. if I were to give the Pixies another shot, I'd just listen to Surfer Rosa or Doolittle. Highlight Song/s: "Cecillia Ann" and "Rock Music"

One of the best feelings in music is hearing a band for the first time, loving it, and then discovering that their back catalogue is even better. This album was my introduction to Pixies. The videos for “Digging for Fire” and “Velouria” played consistently on MTV, and coming from the showy 80’s where New Wave, Glam Rock, and Hair Metal was very visual and MTV friendly, these guys were downright weird. They wore normal clothes and their videos are akin to watching a campfire: not much happens but you are mesmerized anyway. Then I discovered their previous albums and fell in love with them. So this album will always have a special place for me for being my first exposure to them. Love the bass line in “Is She Weird?”, the guitar in “Hang Wire”, and I came to really appreciate “The Happening” and “Stormy Weather” It’s not my favorite Pixies album, but still one of my favorites of all time.

I LOVE the pixies but I’m not convinced this album belongs on the list. It’s not 100% for me

I had a university prof in linguistics who worked under Chomsky. I took the course by VHS. I would have to go the university library and take out each session and play it at home. Every class opened with a Pixies' song played on a portable cassette player. That was my introduction to the the Pixies aside from a few playing at the alternative night at bars aimed at students. I volunteered at the local university radio station and the Pixies sounded like a better college radio band. This was music made by "smarter" people who still wanted to keep the energy of punk but wanted to say something else. This band definitely helped define the alternative sound before it matured and became a million different pieces and sub-genres. I had not listened to any of their records as a record before. I recognized a few songs off this one. If I try to pick a standout, I end up listing almost half the album but no one song says that it is a must listen. Maybe that is a sign of good album. There are a couple of songs that remind me of talking heads and a few tracks that point to followers, especially Smashing Pumpkin. Anyway, to put this in perspective, I am not going to pull out songs and give a blow by blow. I did end up laying in a dark room with headphones and staring at the ceiling. This 90s sound reminded me of late teens and early twenties of just listening to music. That's a nostalgic moment. It does sound better than most late 80s or early 90s music. I'll give this a 4.

At school there were two boys a couple of years below us. Every battle of the bands, every talent show, they would play as a duo: acoustic guitar and bass. This wasn't unusual in itself, but what *was* is that they could sing in harmony: their "signature song" was Wherever You Will Go by the calling. They were also really really lovely. The bassist (James?) was very into early Nirvana (Mr Moustache!) and Pixies. He used to come up to me and play Pixies baselines to convince me to join him in adoration of the Boston-based four-piece. It half-worked. But this album to me is full of new music. Good music! But new to me. I hope they are both doing well now and making great music together, wherever they have gone to.

Not bad.

Not quite my jam. Pixies just don’t quite cut it for me and this album seemed to confirm it. This one was definitely better than the first one though.

Alright, after a second pixies album I have decided I do not like them. While this album isn't as full of shitty screaming tracks like surfer Rosa was, it is instead full of mediocre alt garage rock songs that are like two and a half minutes long each. Nothing stood out, felt unique, or was really enjoyable. Bleh

Sounds a little like The B-52s if they got real angry. A handful of the tracks on this album featured interesting and delicate guitar, supported by tight instrumentals and somewhat appropriate vocals. The first and last tracks are good examples of songs by the Pixies that I think have a lot of artistic value and are enjoyable to hear. If this album stretched those songs a little longer and featured more of them, I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more. However, most of the songs are very short and don't feature enough depth to develop over the course of their short playtime. This album's total playtime is already on the short side, so the fact that many of the tracks are short themselves makes this album sound like it doesn't have much depth to offer, and is instead a collection of ideas that should have either been developed further or cut entirely.

well, in al honesty i didn’t like this album much because it was two hardcore for me. there were a few slower songs, like my favorite on the album; “havalina” but over all this wasn’t my favorite.

i had to listen to this album like 3 times, due to errors in my scrobbling. and what i come to think after all that is that Pixies sound like nothing else. it's funny to me that in the wiki it says that this album is space rock. Not because it's inaccurate, but because to me, it sounds like other Pixies music. And that says all about this. If you like them, it's really cool. If you don't, you will despise this. I like them. I find this one appropriately abstract, comfortably disjointed, like a sunny day in the beach filtered trough nostalgia, anger and a drugged-out-colored-glasses. Is chill, has some nice songs. Maybe it's not as interesting as other albums from them and i must admit, i don't like the mixing in this one. The songs sound really compressed and not as differentiated and expansive as i could wish. Maybe a remixed/remastered could do it favors to the sound of this one.

The pixies are way cooler than I thought. I only knew "where is my mind" before listening to this album. This album is exactly why I started this journey, excellent album.

The first three Pixies releases are unimpeachable indie rock perfection to my ears, manic and weird and enticing and propulsive and unique and influential and incredible. Bossanova marks the moment that Pixies albums became just very good, as opposed to all legendary masterpieces.

Album number three for Pixies and by this point I would say that we can just leave this one off this list. Not sure what it’s doing here on this list but perhaps the author is a big fan. It’s a cool mix of noisy surf rock with pop sensibilities and a touch of dub bass. These songs don’t necessarily stick in the head so I was always amazed at how popular they were but I guess you had to be there, except I was but I just never got to hear them because they were not on commercial radio at the time and I was just a bit too young to have found the local university radio station at that time. It still sounds good though, but nothing really sticks out right away so I’m not sure that I can call this album essential listening yet. As always perhaps a few more spins will help but definitely not offended by this.

Bossanova is my personal favourite Pixies album, even among their more favoured two. More polished rather than raw, and melodic rather than rhythmic, it leans heavier into more a mellow sound which I find preferable.

From what I’ve heard of the Pixies, this is probably their most consistent album. It keeps that heavier alternative rock sound going the whole way through without too many dips. Just a really solid listen from start to finish.

I enjoy Pixies records. This isn't their best work, but it's fun.

Fire

I am not a very pessimistic person, but I felt that Bossanova underdelivered from what I thought it could have been. Same story as my review from yesterday, high highs with low lows, and I feel the worse parts were a lot easier to reflect on. Really disliked the "surfer music" to start the album. When it was good, though, I found myself restarting the tracks when they were getting near the end. Fave songs: Veloria, All Over the World, The Happening, Havalina Rating: 6.8/10

A few years older, a few years less cutting-edge for a great band. Don't get me wrong, there's several ones to remember- "Velouria," "Cecilia Ann" at the top of that list. But a lot of what made the band special only two years earlier has been lost and really stripped of its ingenuity in favor of a slicker sound.

This is my 3rd and last Pixies album. Of the three on the list I believe this is my least favorite. It is hard to pin down why I feel that way. I enjoy the music especially the more bass heavy songs.

Hab da vor Jaaaaaahren mal reingehört und fand nicht so richtig den Zugang. Mittlerweile geht das deutlich besser, wenngleich ich die beiden Vorgänger noch etwas lieber mag.

Gut, aber kein Vergleich mit den zwei Alben davor.

I don't really know what to say about this one. This album feels like a boba tea or a lava lamp. It's good, but not that crazy.

Influential on much that came later. I much prefer Kim to Jack...

I don't like ratings out of 5 because although this is a great album, it's not the Pixies' best. But I still have to give it a 5.

There's a lot of action here - 14 tracks in 39 minutes! Not sure I was familiar with any of these but there are some great tracks here - sound is what I'd expect based on what I've listened to from them. Lot of driving distorted guitar, but also some dreamy, melodic rock (Havalina).

Not so many catchy tunes as on different albums of theirs, I do appreciate the format and the influence that this band had on others. However, is this a top album, my answer is no.

You cannot go wrong with Pixes. Not their finest, but great.

Tuurlijk, ik ken de naam Pixies. Iedereen wel denk ik, dit is zo'n invloedrijke band. Maar eerlijk? Heb echt nog nooit een nummer van ze gehoord, althans niet bewust. Ik dacht dat het meer in de richting van indierock zou gaan, mijn fout. Bossanova, ik kan ergens wel een beeeeeetje begrijpen hoe ze bij de titel zijn gekomen. Het is wat jazzier dan pure rock/hard rock(waar ze denk ik om bekend staan?) Dat jazzier geluid is opzich wel fijn, maar uiteindelijk overheerst de distortion en toch, voor mij dan, de herrie een beetje. Ik begrijp wel dat dit een invloedrijke band was/is, zeker gezien het instrumentaal gewoon heel erg goed in elkaar zit. Ben niet de grootste fan van de zanger, ook omdat hij vrij veel de schreeuwerige kant op gaat. Maar dat deze band een grote invloed heeft gehad op bands zoals Nirvana? Ja dat laat zich wel behoorlijk raden. Tsja, uiteindelijk is het gewoon niet heel erg mijn muziek. Ik heb me zeker niet geirriteerd, dit was een prima album, maar ik denk niet dat ik ooit nog eens iets van de Pixies ga luisteren. Maar goed, Nirvana en Radiohead, 2 bands waar ze heel veel invloed op hebben gehad, zijn ook niet echt mijn ding. Trek dit wel beter dan Radiohead, maar dat heeft vooral met de zang te maken. Have heard of the pixies Had not listened to bossanova Had not heard any of the singles I really liked this album. I was too young to know the pixies before grunge hit, and then it was really just thier more popular songs. Songs are all solid, it's good complete album and to me sounds a bit timeless in that I don't think it's dated to the early 90s or pre grunge. I think it definitely belongs in the list, and I'll listen to it again.

Started with some solid surf punk in the first half, then petered out to mid alternative around track 8.

Pixies are responsible for some of the WORST albums I’ve ever heard (post comeback) I think they have three albums that could be on this list, if we follow the precedent set by this list, and this album is not one. It’s a C-Tier Pixies album. Reaaaallly should have been their first album…which I did listen to right after. This feels like a retread of their previous albums. Still got some great stuff though. “Is She Weird”

This is a great album. While listening I felt it might actually be the heaviest Pixies record in a certain way — not necessarily the loudest or most aggressive, but the one with the deepest, most hypnotic weight to it. The rhythms are really interesting and addictive, mixing that classic Pixies loud-quiet dynamic with strong surf rock and psychedelic influences. The instrumentals are excellent throughout — those huge, dreamy guitar tones, killer bass lines, and tight drumming create such a rich atmosphere. Black Francis’ vocals fit perfectly, going from smooth and seductive to unhinged when needed, and Kim Deal’s backing vocals add that extra magic. Songs like “Velouria,” “Dig for Fire,” “All Over the World,” “Havalina,” and “Down to the Well” all stand out with their own distinct vibe. The whole record feels more mature and atmospheric than their earlier work, while still keeping that weird, dark edge the band is known for. Bossanova is seriously underrated. For me it’s one of their strongest and most consistent albums. Really enjoyable from start to finish.

Is she weird? Is she white? Is she promised to the night? This record doesn’t really stand out for me the way Pixies’ earlier stuff does, but I’d rather listen to Pixies than a vast array of other rock bands, so it had that going for it at least. And hey, starting off with surf music is always a good idea. “Is She Weird” is fun, “Havalina” is a great closing song, and there’s sufficient sonic weirdness here and there to keep my attention. So yeah, that was fun. 4 stars

"Bossanova" is my favourite Pixies album so far. I absolutely loved every moment of it. There's one song on "Bossanova" that rules over the rest. It's none other than "Is She Weird", my favourite song of the month, Other highlights include "Alison" and "Down to the Well". 5 stars for "Bossanova".

Second pixies album of the project. Pretty cool album, some songs and lyrics were really interesting. Definitely music you have to concentrate on.

The first two Pixies albums are great so it is with no surprise they're both on this list. This one, however, is one Pixies album too many. It's too all over the place, and the songs don't hit quite as hard. There's still plenty of great moments, but they're more scattered throught the tracklist. The surf music influence does make it stand out a little, though. Key tracks: Cecilia Ann Velouria All Over the World

This is the Pixies so I do really like this. Quite - loud- quiet. They have by this stage ( their third album?) found their groove. But to me, while their other earlier albums on the list Doolittle and Surfer Rosa, are standout 5 star albums, this is more in the 4 star category.

"Cecilia Ann" is an important link on the surf-rock-to-shoegaze axis. Kim Deal is such a big part of what makes the Pixies awesome. Starts strong and then kind of fizzles out, drags, but a fun record.

Would not buy

This is a great album. The Pixies are one of those ‘cool’ bands that I never got into cause I wasn’t that cool as a kid. Now I am in my 50’s I must be cool as I really enjoyed this album. Looking forward to hearing more.

Hmm. This is mediocre compared to Doolittle. I can agree with the book's blurb that this album is when the band have lost their stride and tensions started to crop up. It feels like the beginning with Vellouria and Is She Weird they're revving up the tempo, but then it just peters out into an 'okay' rock album.

More Pixies! Yum! Second half is better than the first. Does not contain any of the hits so this is one for you if you really liked the stuff between the hits on the other pixies albums. This concluded all pixies albums for this list. Loved my time with their work. Eclectic, chaotic, thought provoking and a delightfull weird that tickles my brain in a good way.

It sounds like a little bit of a departure from their previous album Dolittle. It's a great album and an essential album by The Pixies. It's got a really good sound to it. Joey Santiago's guitar work is amazing as always. Definitely worth it.

Pretty solid and straightforward 90's rock. Nothing too crazy or super memorable but still an enjoyable listen. I just wish certain songs were longer as there's way too many tracks that end after on a minute or 2. 3/5

Some decent songs, but overall it didn't engage me firmly or speak to me, and a few of the songs felt abrasive without redeeming qualities.

Best pixies album imo, atmospheric sci-fi surfer rock is always sick and the album isn’t too long. It’s really catchy and charm-full witch I think gives it a really nice especially compared to the pixies other brutal albums.

Someone once described Pixies as “surf music for goths”, and Bossanova is probably the album that makes that description make the most sense. All woozy reverb, spacey twang and alienated cool, it drifts away from the snarling chaos people usually associate with the band and leans into a strange, sun-bleached atmosphere. It feels less like a punch to the face and more like being quietly abducted from a Californian beach. I preferred this to Doolittle. The songs are looser, moodier, and more confident in their weirdness. Tracks like “Velouria” and “Dig for Fire” glide rather than explode, while Black Francis sounds oddly restrained, letting the textures do most of the talking. Kim Deal’s basslines are rubbery and hypnotic, and Joey Santiago’s surf-inflected guitar gives the whole record a detached, otherworldly sheen. It’s not wall-to-wall classics, and it does drift a bit in the middle, but that’s part of its charm. Bossanova feels like a band deliberately stepping sideways instead of trying to outdo themselves. I might even give it another listen at some point — but don’t hold me to it!!

Enjoyed but nowhere even close to my devout love for Doolittle (which I missed god damn) what a wonderful bunch of freaks - it’s also mad how Cage The Elephant follow the exact same trajectory as Pixies but just do it shitter and somehow more commercial? and that is very funny to me.

It was fine, interesting at times but nothing that caught my ear. Just an average listen.

Bossanova is the sound of Pixies digging for something new amidst the ashes of the old. Cecilia Ann announces as much, and while Rock Music reminds us that there will still be sharp edges along the way as they slide into the surf of a receding past to get weird with Velouria (and later ask, Is She Weird). It's understandable that you may laud Surfer Rosa and Doolittle as you champion Pixies music. Bossanova offers little reward as an innovative album like those two, however its charms are still powerful: like the potent imagery of Black Francis lyrics given space to exhale, Joey Santiago's leads stretching and contracting spinning a spidery web across the tracks, and, despite increasing marginalization within the band, the way Kim haunts the record still pulls you in. Here is a Pixies album that'll accompany you at a comforting pace on a late night drive through the Lynchian woods on your way home to crash at a friend's house, the cabin of your boxy Fiat thick with the smell of cloves, and a jar of Raven Manic Panic rolling around the floor...someone's wearing black and white striped tights and someone is wearing a black leather jacket. It's the post show come down and it happens All Over the World.

It is now officially my favorite album of the Pixies. Velouria is definitely my fav Song of it.

What a great soundtrack to my Monday morning - definitely woke me up. Was really nice to listen to this one properly; Bossanova gets overshadowed by Doolittle and Surfer Rosa. But it's a really great album, comes at you hard an fast with great riffs. The album as a whole is very good I do think what stops it from reaching the heights of those other albums is that for me, there aren't any massive hits. It's missing the 'Debaser' or 'Gigantic'. But still brilliant. Favourites: Velouria Ana All Over The World Down To The Well

I'm a big pixies fan. One of the best gigs I've ever been to was one of theirs. They just hit harder than other bands. This album had lots that was surprisingly unfamiliar to me. Needs a few more listens to properly judge. It's unrelentingly great though.

i like rock music :) thats what my profile says, thats what i say. It's a happening that i also like the longer songs since many are short, like all over the world, the happening. oh and is she weird. The intrumentals really remind me of big alternative bands, but the lyrics are a little out of synch for me.

I listened to this once before and would not consider it one of my favorites from their classic era.

Enjoyed a lot more than their previous album, no songs in particular stuck with me, but as a whole I really enjoyed it. Was in a bit of a pissy mood today and this kinda accentuated and softened it at the same time.

This album really surprised me. I have barely listened to the Pixies so I was pretty skeptical considering this album did not have that many listens for songs on Spotify. Velouria is not my favorite, it seems to be the most hyped song on the album but it bored me. Allison however is probably my favorite minute of the album, I really wish it was longer. Allison-Dig for Fire is my favorite section of the album but after that I was bored until Hang Wire. The last three songs round out the album well and are the reason I am rating 4 stars instead of 3. Once again this album surprised me and I loved that about it.

I like this album more than Doolittle.

Something about The Pixies just speaks to the Gen Xer in me. People seem to forget how different they were from every other band on earth when they were putting out these albums because they were copied so much. This is my third favorite album of theirs after Dolittle and Surfer Rosa, but it's still nearly perfect. The only negative I have to say about this one is there's not nearly enough Kim Deal compared to their earlier albums. But that's because she was off making another of my favorite albums, Pod by the Breeders

My favorite so far

Seen the Pixies perform this one live! Is this their best album? Well, no: not in a world where Doolittle and tromp Le Monde both exist. But comparing anybody to the best of the Pixies discography, even the Pixies, is an admittedly unfair juxtaposition. It's uneven in parts, though the singles (Velouria!) shine brightly throughout. Smartly Kim 'The Real' Deal's basslines, those iconic tone-rich chugs are as always the standout, are given enough room in the sometimes crowded mix to be ass buzzy and badass as they need to be, and they really carry the whole album forward with their richness. Black Francis' usual angsty vocals are paired with a strong lyrical confidence, though again not as strong as their previous outing on the outstanding Doolittle. Bossanova, for better or worse, has always been to me the weakest of the golden-era Pixies records unfortunately. As above, it's a perfectly great album, but it's just not them at their best. I don't know loads of Pixies stuff, but what I know I really like. So I was kind of excited to see this. I mean it's fine. But when you're doing pop-post-punk you need some catchy tunes, and I didn't really find any here. Just not in the same league as Doolittle and I don't really understand why it's in the book.

"Velouria" was the only song that really stood out to me on this album. I know they inspired super influential bands, but they do not inspire me. You can definitely tell that the band members did not like each other. Each instrument seems to be its own unique sound and none of the music sounds like a cooperative effort. I'd skip them if they ever popped up in my playlist. 3/10

A really great album! It was energetic, a lot of variety, and oozing with that quirky 90's music style. I've heard the usual Pixies songs, but never listened to a full album. I'm very glad to have rectified that. I get why they're held in such high esteem by people.

The Pixies expand on their sonic palette and creative ideas here, compared to their earlier albums. It leads to some nice and unique moments, but the overall album feels a bit meh to me. It's good but doesn't really stand out. Might just take a while and a few listens to warm up to it though.

Sitting somewhere between The Fall and garage rock it's right up my alley. As a proud member of the shoewave community, my 18-year-old self finds the title offensive. Otherwise, this is good shit.

There are parts of these songs that I like. However, almost all of them are ruined by overstimulating one note guitar, and screaming bad lyrics at me. One song I paticually didn't like was 'Rock Music'. There are way too many songs that are just random female names. Too many for one artist, let alone one album. Overall I think one song of this would be a painless experience, but a whole album is a miserable listen. Two stars. (Favorite track: Velouria.)

This is a hard 2 for me right now, like I cannot fathom how they have 9 million monthly listeners. I think they have a really popular single and that might contribute to it, but I literally could not get through the first 3 songs. It just sounds like a washed out, unpolished synth rock band where no one really stands out as being good at their instrument.

4/5. Bossanova often gets overshadowed in discussions by the first two Pixies albums, which is a shame because this one is also really good. I’d put it on the same level of quality as Surfer Rosa, though not quite on the level of Doolittle. It manages to strike a good balance of being more accessible while not sacrificing the bands edge and personality, which you can hear on songs like “Velouria” or “Is she weird.” Really enjoyed my time coming back to this one.

I just don't get the Pixies. They have nice beats and grooves, but except one or two tracks on an album I find their work quite boring. this one has a good last track.

I’m a huge fan of the Pixies. This album was more mainstream and commercial, and I felt it unjustly got some disappointing reviews in the press. Yes it isn’t noisy and abrasive, but I think this was a natural progression for any band.

Some hits and some misses here. 'Rock Music' reminded me of my cat having a temper tantrum but I vibed more with track 3 onwards.

Masterpiece. Timeless. Second best selling debut album of all time.

Album 82 Top 3 favorites off the album: Velouria, Dig for Fire, Havalina Cecilia Ann sounds like the opening for a surfer movie where you'd see a ton of long, tan, and "handsome" shirtless men walking past women in bikinis in the afternoon/late afternoon sun. Nothing could have prepared me for Rock Music as the next track. Another case of "the band name and album title didn't tell me what to expect in sound." I'm not mad about it. Usually, I'm not mad about it. We keep that track record going here. I like the variation in sound. They did a good job breaking up heavier, driving songs with weightier, slower ones ("heavier" as in sound, "weightier" as in slightly sparer instrumentation while maintaining substance, if that makes sense). I thought I was departing from my usual affinity for slower and quieter songs, but I did like the slightly quieter ones over the loudest. It's all relative. One thing that threw me off a bit was how much song lengths varied. Before I had a chance to get into Allison, it was already over. Then you get something like All Over the World at around 4x the length of Allison (which is fine, it's a good song, and it reminds me again of Bob Hund (if I had a nickel for every time a band on here had reminded me of Bob Hund, I would have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice)). It just felt strange in some spots. Good album. I would listen again.

Love the pixies

It’s the beginning of the 90’s and Nirvana, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice and Chains have not broken through. I can hear the influence in all those bands in this record. No memorable tracks or good singles, but they definitely forged the way

This type of surf-inspired proto-grunge isn't really my thing, but there's some great mixing going on here. Especially like the drum tone and the punchy bass.

I like the Pixies, but this is a pretty forgettable album in my view.
