Reviews (page 3 of 13)

The last great Pixies album.

This is real nice ! Can be listened very easily.

the only pixies album i had listened to before this one was Doolittle, and to be quite frank i think i like this one more. the best song of ever shows up here (rock music), and cuts like allison, is she weird, dig for fire, and hang wire are some fantastic songs. no misses on this, genuinely a perfect piece in the pixies discography.

"I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it." - Kurt Cobain. Pixies are arguably my favorite and most influential band to my taste in music. If you enjoy this, check out Surfer Rosa and Doolittle - their best albums.

This was my favourite Pixies album for many years - in my memory it was quite a big thing when it got released - Pixies were relatively popular in the Netherlands (see the VPRO Onrust en Pinkpop '89 videos on Youtube - especially the VPRO recordings are as great as ever). Of course the previous albums are just as good. All 5 stars.

Still very good throughout.

What a band! This may not be their best but still 5 stars easily.

The third best Pixies album by a distance and still a solid 5. Says it all about how utterly incredible they were in their heyday. They were more consistent than SHACK's weekly Tesco big shop. N.B. For those interested the weekly Tesco big shop consists of 24 chicken breasts (reduced value only), 64 large eggs (each carefully checked for damage before purchase), 6 packets of bacon (lovingly referred to as "that ham you eat hot"), as many lamb chops as his meaty arms can carry and 1 carrot (to help him see in the dark). He goes to Marks & Spencer for his bits.

It's surf rock meets punk meets indie rock meets pop meets sci-fi obsession meets teenage lust. Or, should I say, it's Dick Dale meets Hüsker Dü meets REM meets Ed Wood meets The Shangri-Las. It's those explosive chord changes and barks by Black Francis. It's those spacey solos by Joey Santiago. It's those straightfaced background vocals and straightforward basslines by Kim Deal. It's those metronomic gated drums by David Lowering. It's Gil Norton's streamlined production. It's that stellar songwriting all around, minus a very few patchy songs here and there (4.5/5 would be my exact score for this particular record, but let's not split hairs, there's enough great stuff in it to justify its presence on the list). It's a good memory, but not only that: I must have listened to the first four albums from this legendary band a thousand times, but everytime this app points me to one of them, I bob my head to it just like I did during the nineties. It's cinematic AND musical. It's wild AND melodic. It's definitely from the nineties as I said, but it also has that late fifties/early sixties mood and atmosphere to it. It's like no other band. It's the apex of early indie rock, one that would reshuffle all cards in the decade to come. It's lively. It's catchy. It's terrific. It's the frigging Pixies in their heyday. Enough said. Oh, I almost forgot. As I'm spinning "Bossanova" in my living room right now, my 16-year old stepson just told me how much he loves this band too. He definitely comes from another day and age, musically speaking. But he can recognize truly awesome stuff when he stumbles upon it. A timeless record. One of the very few you can find out there. Keep them coming, Dimery and co. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 882 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 63 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 29 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 27

Harder pixies album. All about it

Class Pixies. Brilliant originals.

The Pixies are a band that gave the world everything good about 90s indie rock. Without their loud-quiet-loudagain style there would have been no Nirvana either. A band to cherish.

The slick noise of postpunk. The wooshy riffs of grunge. And the irresistible grooves of alt-rock as a whole. It has everything that I love about '90s rock. Whether it's a wild experimental rock album or an early catalyst in the '90s alt-rock tsunami (released a year before Nirvana's "Nevermind"!), this album is an adventure from start to finish.

Geweldige plaat, misschien dat ik Doolittle nog iets beter vind, maar sowieso krijgen alle Pixies platen 5 sterren

Pixies is altijd goed! De platen uit de 90's welteverstaan. Dig For Fire van deze plaat is echt een van hun beste tracks (naar mijn bescheiden mening)

I wrote a one act about this band

A confession from someone who considers themselves a Pixies fan: I only ever had their "Death to the Pixies" compilation, and I always thought it was enough. Then I saw them live in Cardiff in 2016 and did not enjoy them one bit, there was no audience engagement or energy. But this album has reaffirmed my love of Pixies; it's nice to hear the classics from "Death to..." alongside some songs I've never heard before, all of which are good.

Your mouth’s a mile away - Rock music My velouria, my velouria Even I’ll adore you, my velouria Even I’ll adore you, my velouria Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah - Velouria When the planets hit the sun I saw the face of Allison -Allison Is she weird Is she white Is she promised to the night And her head has no room - is she weird

Good. Seems basic but probably only because they influenced so much

Very cool

Some good songs on here

WAT EEN BEGIN goeie variatie production 🤌🏻 love this shit

Can see why this is considered so influential. I’ve never really given them a shot, but this was quite a ride. Loved it!!

It's like listening to an alt punk version of the Beatles...quick songs that hit and then move you on to the next...my wife love Velouria and its quickly become one of my favs on this album as well

Fantastic

Brutal. Clásico.

One of my favorite bands, a really good album by them, not my favorite. nice mix of sounds.. i love ana, all over the world, is she weird

Best Pixies album, blends alt-rock with wildly experimental tones and just a perfect touch of surf

ITS A FIVE

Ahhhh the pixies!

this was a great album. a couple of songs lacked a bit of OOMF but honestly it was all really incredible music 🥡

my favourite album at the moment love it <3

Great album and great band that I only knew from "Where is my mind". Also their bassist is from Dayton

So good!

Nirvana like and raw. Starts out like 'teen spirit' then tranforms into something 20 years ahead of it's time. Great.

Even mediocre Pixies is better than most music

It’s not really necessary for this to be on the list. It is a clear step below Doolittle in quality and not that different musically or historically important. Good album though.

definitivamente para escuchar con auris y el volumen al palo. con el tema Alison arranque a mover la cabeza y no paré. divertido, me costó enganchar al principio

3.86 for Bossanova. One of my favorite Pixies albums. Songs are fast and furious and that infamous Pixies Wall of Sound just hits you on this one. Really well put together harmonies and hooks. This one is a keeper. Can't say anything bad about an album that ends with a beautiful ode to a wild pig.

#369 I should really have delved into Pixies more than I have because I’ve only really focused on the greatest hits. I must have listened to an album or two at one stage but not this one. It doesn’t really contain any of the big hits yet it’s still a very good album which feels greater than the sum of its parts. Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ✅ Listen before you die? ✅ Fave track(s): Cecilia Ann; Velouria Rating: 8/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

fuck yesssss.... i've been waiting for a pixies album to come up and this doesn't disappoint! i'd only heard surfer rosa before this so im really hearing how much their sound matured between albums. like, the rawness of their earlier stuff still comes through on tracks like "rock music", "dig for fire" and "the happening" (my favourite track), but then songs like "ana" and "velouria" feel much more focused, like they managed to control the energy. it's a cleaner feel, which isn't necessarily a good thing, but it's not really a bad thing either.... and in any case, it's still unmistakably pixies. its close, but as much as i still love the sound i do find myself missing the frantic energy of their earlier stuff, especially in the vocals. i'll revisit this i think.....

Ahead of their time I suppose, I can hear the influence on the grunge scene.

4/5 Favorite Songs: Cecilia Ann Velouria Is She Weird All Over the World Dig for Fire

i knew i would love this album. it made me want to listen to pixies more.

For how difficult their music should be, the Pixies make them feel easy

Classic Pixies

Yeeeees! Ful mam rada Pixies. Ampak ta njihov album nism še neki preposlušala, poznam pa kr neki komadov. "Cecilia Ann" je kul. "Is She Weird" mi je ful nepoznan, a ga prvič slišim? Hm. Mi je pa všeč. "Ana" mi je od nekdaj ljub. Glede na to, da hengam na balkonu, upam da ni cajt za "Stormy Weather". (Spoiler: totalno je bil.)

Love these guys

Хороший альбом

Missed them in my youth. Pleased to make the acquaintance. 4

Solid addition to the Pixies catalog. I wouldn't personally put this ahead of either Doolittle or Surfer Rosa but it's still a great album. Contains some of the Pixies prettier moments with The Happening in particular being a fantastic track. Havalina has some great melodies and acts as a great closer. Velouria and Dig for Fire settle into their greatest hits. I've always found Allison to be kind of annoying but other than that, got no issues with this album. 4 stars

what can i really say, bossa nova is really very good to me. listen for yourself! favorites: - rock music - velouria - allison - is she weird - ana - the happening - hang wire - stormy weather - havalina

It’s kinda autopilot pixies but it still rips

I like that they let the songs get kind of weird on this. Not as high highs as other albums of theirs but still solid.

I forgot some of these songs existed, truly some bangers on here. Pixies will always deliver

Was good

Today is a day of contrasts. First, the generator gives us the worst of the four original Pixies LPs. Now, let's be clear that I call this “the worst,” because it is, but it is not BAD. The Pixies didn't put out a bad album during the Kim Deal era. But this is the one that feels the most rudderless, the least essential. It feels like a weird album to include in this book unless all three of the others are, too. While Surfer Rosa and Doolittle feel like Revelations from the future, this feels more like a reversal deep into the 80s. Look at all that sheen on “Velouria,” for example. It is a flawless 5* song as far as I am concerned, but it's a very different band. That's kind of what I mean here. Even Trompe le Monde, which is nearly Dealless, feels more cut from the same cloth as the first few. But you have the almost surf inflected trio of ladies: Cecelia Ann, Allison, and Ana. You have “Is She Weird,” which approaches the old stuff conceptually, and Dig for Fire, which doesn't but is still a minor classic. It's an album I have come around to quite a bit since I first heard it, but it still doesn't carry the weight of the others (and it has that kinda dead area between Dig for Fire and Stormy Weather). Again, I want to make it clear, this is a 4* album without a doubt. But it's more of a 4.11 while the others range closer to 4.5 to 5. Always nice to hear it, but a weird choice for the project.

Tenía los anteriores en vinilo y este fue el primero en CD. Qué grandes músicos. Para guardar: Velouria, Allison, All over the world y Dig for fire.

Not as good as the first pixies album we listened to but still too enjoyable to be a 3 star album for me

Yippee! My second Pixies album. Cecilia Ann was a nice intro, and Rock Music was a very interesting heavier track! I thought it carried itself well. I thought that Velouria was a very solid track and Allison, while short was very catchy! I quite liked Digging for Fire! I really enjoyed the mix of track lengths on this album. Nothing really seemed to overstay its welcome at all. I adored Stormy weather!! Such a nice melancholic track. Havalina was a nice way to end things off. I did like this album! 4/5 ⭐️ 162/1089

Great album, showcasing the diversity of the Pixies’ sound

V-E-L-O-U-R-I-A

I liked this album a lot. I couldn’t tell you what song was what, but there were a lot of really cool moments throughout. I love the sound of this band.

Velouria, Ana (surfer acronym), The Happening, Havalina. Awesome, understandable why they are considered one of the great bands of their generation. Excited to explore more. I guess I heard a little surf rock in there, something I largely associate with ‘50s ‘60s, but am excited to hear more of its ‘80s ‘90s revival.

Fav song: Ana

The first six or so songs were a little hit or miss but it ends strongly, especially with Havalina

I had a university prof in linguistics who worked under Chomsky. I took the course by VHS. I would have to go the university library and take out each session and play it at home. Every class opened with a Pixies' song played on a portable cassette player. That was my introduction to the the Pixies aside from a few playing at the alternative night at bars aimed at students. I volunteered at the local university radio station and the Pixies sounded like a better college radio band. This was music made by "smarter" people who still wanted to keep the energy of punk but wanted to say something else. This band definitely helped define the alternative sound before it matured and became a million different pieces and sub-genres. I had not listened to any of their records as a record before. I recognized a few songs off this one. If I try to pick a standout, I end up listing almost half the album but no one song says that it is a must listen. Maybe that is a sign of good album. There are a couple of songs that remind me of talking heads and a few tracks that point to followers, especially Smashing Pumpkin. Anyway, to put this in perspective, I am not going to pull out songs and give a blow by blow. I did end up laying in a dark room with headphones and staring at the ceiling. This 90s sound reminded me of late teens and early twenties of just listening to music. That's a nostalgic moment. It does sound better than most late 80s or early 90s music. I'll give this a 4.

Not my favorite Pixies, but it’s still very good.

"velouria", "allison", and "dig for fire" are great tunes. but this album is not as good as the first two - "bossanova" and "surfer rosa".

Grear sound - reminded me of Talking Heads

Not Bossanova! First half was fine, second half I thoroughly enjoyed. Could have been 5* if side A was as good. Slowly becoming a Pixies fan.

i had to listen to this album like 3 times, due to errors in my scrobbling. and what i come to think after all that is that Pixies sound like nothing else. it's funny to me that in the wiki it says that this album is space rock. Not because it's inaccurate, but because to me, it sounds like other Pixies music. And that says all about this. If you like them, it's really cool. If you don't, you will despise this. I like them. I find this one appropriately abstract, comfortably disjointed, like a sunny day in the beach filtered trough nostalgia, anger and a drugged-out-colored-glasses. Is chill, has some nice songs. Maybe it's not as interesting as other albums from them and i must admit, i don't like the mixing in this one. The songs sound really compressed and not as differentiated and expansive as i could wish. Maybe a remixed/remastered could do it favors to the sound of this one.

The pixies are way cooler than I thought. I only knew "where is my mind" before listening to this album. This album is exactly why I started this journey, excellent album.

The first three Pixies releases are unimpeachable indie rock perfection to my ears, manic and weird and enticing and propulsive and unique and influential and incredible. Bossanova marks the moment that Pixies albums became just very good, as opposed to all legendary masterpieces.

Gotta love the pixies.

Bossanova is my personal favourite Pixies album, even among their more favoured two. More polished rather than raw, and melodic rather than rhythmic, it leans heavier into more a mellow sound which I find preferable.

From what I’ve heard of the Pixies, this is probably their most consistent album. It keeps that heavier alternative rock sound going the whole way through without too many dips. Just a really solid listen from start to finish.

There's a lot of action here - 14 tracks in 39 minutes! Not sure I was familiar with any of these but there are some great tracks here - sound is what I'd expect based on what I've listened to from them. Lot of driving distorted guitar, but also some dreamy, melodic rock (Havalina).

You cannot go wrong with Pixes. Not their finest, but great.

Am I ever going to listen to the Pixies regularly? Naw. Does this still rule? Yup

This is a great album. While listening I felt it might actually be the heaviest Pixies record in a certain way — not necessarily the loudest or most aggressive, but the one with the deepest, most hypnotic weight to it. The rhythms are really interesting and addictive, mixing that classic Pixies loud-quiet dynamic with strong surf rock and psychedelic influences. The instrumentals are excellent throughout — those huge, dreamy guitar tones, killer bass lines, and tight drumming create such a rich atmosphere. Black Francis’ vocals fit perfectly, going from smooth and seductive to unhinged when needed, and Kim Deal’s backing vocals add that extra magic. Songs like “Velouria,” “Dig for Fire,” “All Over the World,” “Havalina,” and “Down to the Well” all stand out with their own distinct vibe. The whole record feels more mature and atmospheric than their earlier work, while still keeping that weird, dark edge the band is known for. Bossanova is seriously underrated. For me it’s one of their strongest and most consistent albums. Really enjoyable from start to finish.

Is she weird? Is she white? Is she promised to the night? This record doesn’t really stand out for me the way Pixies’ earlier stuff does, but I’d rather listen to Pixies than a vast array of other rock bands, so it had that going for it at least. And hey, starting off with surf music is always a good idea. “Is She Weird” is fun, “Havalina” is a great closing song, and there’s sufficient sonic weirdness here and there to keep my attention. So yeah, that was fun. 4 stars

It’s good. Not as good as their other albums, so doesn’t really need to be on the list.

Second pixies album of the project. Pretty cool album, some songs and lyrics were really interesting. Definitely music you have to concentrate on.

This is the Pixies so I do really like this. Quite - loud- quiet. They have by this stage ( their third album?) found their groove. But to me, while their other earlier albums on the list Doolittle and Surfer Rosa, are standout 5 star albums, this is more in the 4 star category.

This is a great album. The Pixies are one of those ‘cool’ bands that I never got into cause I wasn’t that cool as a kid. Now I am in my 50’s I must be cool as I really enjoyed this album. Looking forward to hearing more.

all were highkey nice and not rlly like the typical more generic rock songs

i like pixies

More Pixies! Yum! Second half is better than the first. Does not contain any of the hits so this is one for you if you really liked the stuff between the hits on the other pixies albums. This concluded all pixies albums for this list. Loved my time with their work. Eclectic, chaotic, thought provoking and a delightfull weird that tickles my brain in a good way.

Fkn love pixies

Can you yell at me a little louder alt rock daddy?

Somewhat disappointing to me upon it’s release, still not as impactful as Doolittle or Surfer Rosa, but sounds better now than I remembered.

Light 4

Me gusta muchisimo el sonido de los Pixies, un buen disco

Best pixies album imo, atmospheric sci-fi surfer rock is always sick and the album isn’t too long. It’s really catchy and charm-full witch I think gives it a really nice especially compared to the pixies other brutal albums.

first 10 seconds already far better than rolling stones.

I greatly enjoyed this album. I much prefer it over the more popular Pixes album, Dolittle. I likes the guitar tones, and the general production. Is she weird also stuck out to me. 4/5

Someone once described Pixies as “surf music for goths”, and Bossanova is probably the album that makes that description make the most sense. All woozy reverb, spacey twang and alienated cool, it drifts away from the snarling chaos people usually associate with the band and leans into a strange, sun-bleached atmosphere. It feels less like a punch to the face and more like being quietly abducted from a Californian beach. I preferred this to Doolittle. The songs are looser, moodier, and more confident in their weirdness. Tracks like “Velouria” and “Dig for Fire” glide rather than explode, while Black Francis sounds oddly restrained, letting the textures do most of the talking. Kim Deal’s basslines are rubbery and hypnotic, and Joey Santiago’s surf-inflected guitar gives the whole record a detached, otherworldly sheen. It’s not wall-to-wall classics, and it does drift a bit in the middle, but that’s part of its charm. Bossanova feels like a band deliberately stepping sideways instead of trying to outdo themselves. I might even give it another listen at some point — but don’t hold me to it!!

Really enjoyed this quite a lot. Good vibes all round

Listened to it during run, good album to have on in the background. Love the harsher sound while still sounding clean and refined. Definitely a relisten.

I've never listened to Pixies before. This was a great intro to the group. I'm not the most knowledgeable of 90s rock/alternative music, and I'm hoping to explore more of that now.

Really enjoyable listen. “Ana” and “Havalina” were my favourites. Was a little hit or miss for me sometimes, I don’t really enjoy “Rock Music” as much as the other songs, though I still had a pretty fun experience

Noisy, melodic, fast, slow.

What a great soundtrack to my Monday morning - definitely woke me up. Was really nice to listen to this one properly; Bossanova gets overshadowed by Doolittle and Surfer Rosa. But it's a really great album, comes at you hard an fast with great riffs. The album as a whole is very good I do think what stops it from reaching the heights of those other albums is that for me, there aren't any massive hits. It's missing the 'Debaser' or 'Gigantic'. But still brilliant. Favourites: Velouria Ana All Over The World Down To The Well

Awesome

I'm a big pixies fan. One of the best gigs I've ever been to was one of theirs. They just hit harder than other bands. This album had lots that was surprisingly unfamiliar to me. Needs a few more listens to properly judge. It's unrelentingly great though.

Twas really good.

Enjoyed this. Probably never love them as much as you all do though

Velouria, Dig for Fire and Allison all top tier but the rest of the album is unreal too. My thrid fav by them (4.5)

Delicious, Pixies are so underrated

i like rock music :) thats what my profile says, thats what i say. It's a happening that i also like the longer songs since many are short, like all over the world, the happening. oh and is she weird. The intrumentals really remind me of big alternative bands, but the lyrics are a little out of synch for me.

classic 90s alternative and excellent reminder of where bands like Nirvana, Foo Fighters and others got their inspiration. Definitely a great addition to this list.

Enjoyed this far more than I thought I would.

cecilia ann great instrumental song all over the world or hang wire = fave did become background music but in a very good way

DE 100!!

3.5/5 velouria

Enjoyed a lot more than their previous album, no songs in particular stuck with me, but as a whole I really enjoyed it. Was in a bit of a pissy mood today and this kinda accentuated and softened it at the same time.

This album really surprised me. I have barely listened to the Pixies so I was pretty skeptical considering this album did not have that many listens for songs on Spotify. Velouria is not my favorite, it seems to be the most hyped song on the album but it bored me. Allison however is probably my favorite minute of the album, I really wish it was longer. Allison-Dig for Fire is my favorite section of the album but after that I was bored until Hang Wire. The last three songs round out the album well and are the reason I am rating 4 stars instead of 3. Once again this album surprised me and I loved that about it.

I like this album more than Doolittle.

My favorite so far

Seen the Pixies perform this one live! Is this their best album? Well, no: not in a world where Doolittle and tromp Le Monde both exist. But comparing anybody to the best of the Pixies discography, even the Pixies, is an admittedly unfair juxtaposition. It's uneven in parts, though the singles (Velouria!) shine brightly throughout. Smartly Kim 'The Real' Deal's basslines, those iconic tone-rich chugs are as always the standout, are given enough room in the sometimes crowded mix to be ass buzzy and badass as they need to be, and they really carry the whole album forward with their richness. Black Francis' usual angsty vocals are paired with a strong lyrical confidence, though again not as strong as their previous outing on the outstanding Doolittle. Bossanova, for better or worse, has always been to me the weakest of the golden-era Pixies records unfortunately. As above, it's a perfectly great album, but it's just not them at their best. "I'm not black, like Barry White, no, I am white, like Frank Black is" - Bloodhound Gang, Fire Water Burn Fav tracks: Cecilia Ann, Velouria, Blown Away

Dope album but this was NOT bossanova. Fav song: Is She Weird

Album rips. Super ahead of its time, certainly feels like it influenced most of the rock aesthetics that would emerge in the 90s. Nothing critical to say about this album. Favorite track: Is She Weird

banco, me gustó

Underrated

How many pixies albums will be on this list?

Sitting somewhere between The Fall and garage rock it's right up my alley. As a proud member of the shoewave community, my 18-year-old self finds the title offensive. Otherwise, this is good shit.

Aaaaaallisoooon

Cecilia Ann Rock Music Velouria All Over the World Dig for Fire Down to the Well

8/10 So apparently I "love" the Pixies, but have never even heard this album. Wow, big fan. More polished and well realised than Doolittle, I guess it lacks some of the really inspired moments of that album. But still excellent and one I will revisit

4/5. Bossanova often gets overshadowed in discussions by the first two Pixies albums, which is a shame because this one is also really good. I’d put it on the same level of quality as Surfer Rosa, though not quite on the level of Doolittle. It manages to strike a good balance of being more accessible while not sacrificing the bands edge and personality, which you can hear on songs like “Velouria” or “Is she weird.” Really enjoyed my time coming back to this one.

I was annoyed by their minimalistic approach at first, and I don't liked the production much... But by the middle of the record I was sold. There's just something infectious in them

I’m a huge fan of the Pixies. This album was more mainstream and commercial, and I felt it unjustly got some disappointing reviews in the press. Yes it isn’t noisy and abrasive, but I think this was a natural progression for any band.

Masterpiece. Timeless. Second best selling debut album of all time.

Love the pixies

It’s the beginning of the 90’s and Nirvana, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice and Chains have not broken through. I can hear the influence in all those bands in this record. No memorable tracks or good singles, but they definitely forged the way

Really smooth and nice album, amongst all the boring soft rock I've gotten recently. Pixies don't disappoint.

easy listen.

Good album to run to

Hinting at the greatness that will come, Pixies first album is a fun listen. It's not their greatest but it shows that they knew they were on to something.

Identifying as a 'Middle Aged White Man,' I am required to enjoy this album.

Love the Pixies!

Saving "Doolittle" for last, huh? Don't think I've listened to this album in its entirety. A very spacey and surf rock-like sound, fitting given the album cover I guess. I always found the Pixies to be more entertaining/tolerable when they focused on producing creative/weird, yet cohesive jams as opposed to being noisy and abrasive (yeah, I didn't care for "Surfer Rosa" if that wasn't obvious...) These tracks don't really overstay their welcome, yet each still provides a clean & contained punch of sound.

Man, if I would have known a Pixies album sounded like this, I would have been listening years ago. Very good album. I really dug the music and energy throughout.

Are the Pixies the original Grunge band? A always liked their music for the most part but the lyrics were so corny. The first album I heard was Trompe Le Monde. I didn’t really like it and I didn’t understand why everyone else was so into this band. This album is really good though. I'm kind of embarrassed that I was so dismissive of this band I love the harmonies.

Awesome

Love this

I wasn't excited to see another Pixies album on the list, but they won me over anyways.

While it certainly doesn't have the same hits as the other Pixies albums from the time, it is well worth a listen, finely blending surf rock with punk sounds and sensibilities to create an endlessly listenable album. Not the first Pixies album I'd recommend, but still fantastic to listen to. Highlights include Rock Music, Velouria, and Hang Wire.

Not as strong as Surfer Rosa or Doolittle, but still a really good Pixies album. Dig For Fire might be my favourite song from them. 4 Stars.

As Pixies albums go I think this is the worst one we did, it doesn’t quite have the hit power. It is still a base level of good and enjoyable alt rock though.

Another great Pixies album, but not quite as strong as most of their other early era albums. Still an undeniable classic.

I reckon this is the last evidence of a balanced and happy Pixies as a band. As much as Trompe Le Monde is also great, it plays much more like a Frank Black solo album than this one. The hits are there - Velouria, Dig for Fire, Allison. And the pop and noise elements are still pretty perfectly balanced. As an album though, it's not quite up there with Doolittle. But what is, really?

Not my fav Pixies, but not bad Pixies.

This is my least favorite kind of rating decision to make, the cusp between a 4 and a 5. On the one hand, there are so many great songs on this album and I think the effort to make the Pixies sound more accessible really works. If we were rating songs, “Velouria” is one of my favs Pixies or otherwise. But I just don’t think the album is anything near the bold artistic statement of Doolittle. Doolittle is its own sick world with its own sick aesthetic. Surfer Rosa isn’t as good, but there is so much in it that points the way — plus Where Is My Mind — that I gave it a 5 too. Bossanova tho… it feels a lot like most Frank Black albums, an enjoyable collection of songs by a clever guy. Really good, but not essential in the way I imagine a 5 album to be.

I usually quite like alternative rock so this was fine, but none of it screams "masterpiece" to me. Favourite two tracks: All Over the World and Blown Away

There's a lot about the Pixies that I should find irritating but they just aren't.. It's raw, driving melodies and ripping vocals and i just like it.

Straight up pop classics, but with surreal goth lyrics and raging quiet-loud-quiet abrasive guitars and singing. Such weird little geniuses. And this is like the third or fourth best Pixies album.

Good music, not quite my genre, but i liked it.

The Pixies were in a league of their own with the album Bossanova. This album is full of so many amazing space rock songs, and in my opinion this is one of the best releases from the early 90s. 4.8/5

This is a great album, an awesome follow up to Surfer Rosa and Doolittle

One of my favourite bands, but I haven't listened to this album that much. A 4 as it is not quite Doolittle or Surfer Rosa. I added Is She Weird and The Happening to my playlist

The Pixies are a modern classic band. I love their music and my children do too. I suspect they will have legs for generations. However, this album is not my favorite. Still great, but hardly peak Pixies.

I've always thought of any Pixies album other than the first two as lesser Pixies, and that's true. The loud-quiet-loud remains, along with the creeping menace. It's all quite enjoyable, just lacking the transcendence of, say, Doolittle. Some real bangers on here though, and maybe their best pop-type songs in "Alison" and "Dig for Fire." Good, not great.

Ahhhhh memories of hosting the overnight radio show at CFMU with Clarke and Ove makes my heart sing. This album is easy-listening Pixies. For those that don't like Frank when he gets a tad shouty. Still freaking great though. I'm reserving the five stars for Doolittle (obvs), but a solid four stars.

This is giving me Weezer by a lot! Maybe Weezer used them as a reference, I’m not sure! To be honest, there’s not really a song that I latched to! Not saying the record isn’t catchy (or that it matters tbh) but it’s not like something I would have continuously in my head (but tidbits of the last song is playing, so maybe I’m a liar)! That being said, it was a very enjoyable listen! I was bopping along to it and I felt it added a little spice to the rock genre! There were some chord changes I didn’t see coming at all! I had fun listening!

Increíble

Now this is what I'm talkin' about. Pixies have their own weird/unique sound, and it just works.

Definitely listen again

Some good songs, some too out there for us.

Much better than Surfa Rosa

All the songs made sense and it flowed really well. I have personally never listened to them so I was curious to what their sound would be but I’ve definitely enjoyed it.

Huge Pixies fan. I love this album. The combination of the songs and production works for me. Not perfect (to me) like Come on Pilgrim or Surfer Rosa, but excellent nonetheless.

Bossanova

Y que viva las lesbianas

Awesome as always

Solide greier. Top 3: Velouria, Is She Weird, The Happening

Fantastic work. The music is excellent and distracts From the fact that the album doesn't have much to say. Cecilia Ann is an incredible opener.

-Cecilia Ann a very fitting, atmospheric intro -Guitar tone very consistent -Vocals are not my favorite sonically but lyrical content is great -Song structure is unique and not adherent to standards -Is She Weird is the exact kind of personality I want injected on an alt album like this -Down to the Well definitely influenced a ton of future alt bands. You can Nirvana and Pearl Jam listened to this song. Riff is awesome and catchy, dope song -Front half of the album I was a bit underwhelmed but at the midway point it really picked up and felt like the personality of the album really shined through

This must be why people like the Pixies

I've had a few Bossa Nova albums in this project but this was a totally different vibe - may have been a naming error; they probably should've called it 'Alternativerock' instead, but that doesn't sound as interesting. Really enjoyed it, no further notes.

2/17/26. I didn't know Pixies rocked like this. 7/10

Being from Chicago I was fortunate to have WXRT as the radio on which I kept my dial set. This station to only played classic rock music from the 60's and 70's, but as the years went on, they would play new and emerging music. I became aware of the Pixies by listening to 'XRT and from the music my son liked as well.

This is my favourite Pixies best, substantially more melodic and slightly less freakish than their other efforts, while still retaining easily enough of their trademark weirdness in both music and lyrics to keep it fresh and interesting.

Quite a short, fun, punchy album that definitely has a mix of some really great songs and some that maybe needed a bit more work but overall I really enjoyed this and would come back again.

It feels more like straightforward alt rock than something like Doolittle maybe, but is still really good fun. I love the hard surfer rock instrumental intro, and from there you blast through a very consistent set of songs. I think this is probably a good Pixies record to give someone who isn't sure if they like them, even if it's not the pinnacle of their work.

Such a consistently nice atmosphere, but no bangers that perticularly stand out

This album did for me what Doolittle couldn't. I love this one. I really love the little touches of surf mixed in.

A couple of my fave Pixies songs inc Velouria and Dig for Fire, but prob slightly prefer Doolittle overall.

Not my favorite Pixies album, but still great.

Coming on the heels of Doolittle, this album is a drop in most senses: it's not as creative, not as catchy, not as surprising. But, it's still a good album in its own rights. It still lays the groundworks for future music (including, surprisingly to me, some early signs of metalcore). This isn't a radio hits album, it's not really written for the casual listener, it's written for those who enjoyed the experimental side of Pixies, and that's what it delivers.

moltbe! no es el doolitle però molt xulo :) viva pixies

Extremely influential, I have no doubts about that, but not really my thing.

8.5/10

Solid, fun and and encapsulates the grunge spirit. Favorite songs: "Cecilia Ann", "Is she weird"

It’s no Surfer Rosa, but love it

The original four album run by The Pixies from Surfer Rosa to Dolittle to Bossanova to Trompe le Monde is pretty unmatched in music. In some ways Bossanova is a different sound altogether. Little bit more spacey and a little bit less jagged with still a whole lot of abstraction. I love this album but knowing that two of the aforementioned albums are on this list that I love more will put this at four stars. I was planning on only giving one five star review to a pixies album but that problem is for another day

Not their best. Still very good

7/10 It's pretty good but honestly nothing here really grabbed my attention.

Очень хороший альбом мне понравился

Along with MBV, the last rock band to do something different with the traditional guitar/bass/drums/vocals setup. Unfortunately, that unique sound was heard on Come On Pilgrim, Surfa Rosa and Doolittle. Bossanova is more of a straightforward rock album and easily the weakest of their initial run of LPs. I want to give it five stars coz Kim Deal (how are The Breeders not on this list, by the way?), but it really isn't a five star album and probably wouldn't be in my own personal 1001 list despite my love for this band.

would run this back again.

cool shit

echt wieder mal ganz gut, bin nur gelangweilt weil echt 80% dieser musik weiße männer rock aus den 70ern bis 90ern ist, GET CREATIVE

Very valid energy! ★★★★

A classic Pixies album that doesn't quite reach the same heights of frenzy nor depths of insanity that Doolittle, or to a lesser extent Surfer Rosa does. It's a little more "safe" in it's compositions and performances, and with a few notable exceptions the songs don't distinguish themselves very effectively. That said, there's a lot to love about this album. Velouria, Dig For Fire, Down The Well, and Hang Wire are all great tracks that sit amongst the pantheon of the Pixies output for me. Nothing is really "bad" per se, and perhaps in a vacuum, without knowledge of their previous work, I'd be judging this differently. It's a challenge for me because the entirety of Doolittle is burned into my soul, and was well established as one of my favorite albums of all time before I ever heard Bossanova. Hopefully Doolittle is on this list as well, as that's an easy 5 from me. This, however is going to sit at a 4

Solid album. Surprised me. Notable tracks include Velouria, Allison, Ana, All Over the World, Dig For Fire, Down to the Well, Stormy Weather, Havalina.

If the songs from Velouria through Ana were the whole album, it would be an easy 5, though the rest of the album is great. I think this is probably a 4.5 to me. The descending riffs in that chunk are like straight crack.

Very good, but I prefer The Doolittle Album

Solid work. No complaints

Play it LOUDDDD

Really liked it!

23/01/2026 *1. cecilia ann - really loving the guitars and vocals. oh it's instrumental lol kinda surfy? fantastic!! 2. rock music - always found the vocals of the pixies to be toeing the line between annoying and really nice, and this is no exception. bit too screamy. like metal. realllly love the guitar. 3. velouria - not mad about his singing voice either, but i certainly like it more. more like generic 90s alt rock. stillll realllllly nice though. still 10000x better than the smashing pumpkins! love the kinda ufo electronic sound. love the ending. 4. allison - great drums at the start. nice! 5. is she weird - like the bass. the vocals have grown on me. *6. ana - bit softer.... dreamier... guitar is phenomenal in this album :) more psychadelic. 7. all over the world - like the spoken word at the start.... just got to the loud part!! love the quick stop and start sound! loving the lyrics! 8. dig for fire - not much to say! didn't enjoy it as much as the other ones, but still realllly nice to listen to! 9. down to the well - guitar is crazy!! 10. the happening - guitar at the start reminds me a bit of dog food by iggy pop.... lovelovelove the guitar that starts with the lyrics. bass is sooo good as well. 11. blown away - like the kinda echoey vocals. love how screechy the guitar is in the solo just before minute in.... 12. hang wire - not as big a fan of the shoutier vocals in the chorus of this. works for the song though. *13. stormy weather - really love the start... not much to say other than great!!! 14. havalina - really sweet <3 kinda shoegazey? really loved this one! generally not a fan of 90s american rock, but it’s really good when the vocals aren’t whiny and shit!

velouria and all over the world have made me get the pixies. i've never been able to get into them much but i used to be really into bands like the smashing pumpkins so this album did appeal to that deep down part of my brain. big fan, think i will be listening a lot in the coming days/weeks

velouria <3 i love playing the bass to this album or the pixies in general. maybe my 2nd favorite pixies album? but a great listen all the way through!

I like the Pixies you should too

Solid album

Good classic rock album, 7.1/10

Not the best Pixies work. Still keeps their essence, though. However, why is this an album you must listen before you die? Gimme more Doolittle or more Surfer Rosa, I guess…

As I figured, I enjoyed this. Need to listen to these albums again to better gauge which I like best.

Definitely 4

I Love It.

I really liked it. The first album which was really my taste and I think I will sneak into the next albums in the next days.

It took a little bit for me to get on this album’s wavelength, but by the end I was vibing pretty hard, and kinda wanted it to keep going. Interested to hear more from them as this is my first album from the Pixies, and I’ve probably heard more from them but just don’t remember. Will probably come back to some songs here at some point this was nice.

J'adore les années 90 merci pour tout

Really nice vibes. I'm amazed by how much I liked this! I feel like it has a really strong influence on Dashboard Confessional, Deathcab, the Postal Service, and so many other groups. I really dig it!

Super fun listen.

Tracks I've heard before: None In no particular order: Top 3: Cecilia Ann Is She Weird Dig For Fire Bottom 3: Rock Music All Over The World Hang Wire

Really liked!!! Rock has been growing on me

Super, swietnie się tego słucha, na pewno wrócę do tego albumu

Great album. I somehow missed the Pixies while growing up in the 90s. This record is a vibe. I certainly enjoyed it.

Pixies make a great alt-rock stew. Fuzzy guitar riffs, bass lines that walk all over the place, lead vocals that are alternately raspy and screamed, and a bit of surf rock dropped into the stew like a bay leaf, infusing everything with a cool, groovy energy. This album is a real vibe. I would definitely like to spend more time with it. Lots of great melodies and hooks too.

Not my style of music. A bit rough at the edges. I imagine it was great at the time and I can see why it was influential to the bands that followed after.

really like it

Weird but enjoyable! Would listen again!

Dit was oprecht leuk! ik kende paar nummers van Pixies, en wist niet dat ze zulke leuke songs verstopten in een paar albums. Ik ga hier zeker nog naar luisteren

This was such a cool album. Defiently added a little spice to my day and was very refreshing. I absolutely loved it and defiently showed me more Pixies songs outside of the the mainstream ones! Very great recommendation!

Not quite their best but still streets ahead of most

Ha! Two Pixies in a row! A treat or a test? Turns out it was a treat! I liked this one much better.

“Rock Music” will never get old! It’s definitely one of my go to tracks when I need a pick me up. As for the rest of the album, it’s solid. This one feels more polished than their previous releases, and it might just be their most cohesive and consistent effort up to this point.

i didn’t think i liked the 90s or grunge but i actually rly liked this. fun album

So good I liked ANA

Fun, a little chaotic at times. Sometimes I loved the chaos And other times I hated it, but maybe in a healthy, cathartic type of way. Made me feel like an angry teenager, letting out some feels.

In 1990, if I wasn't listening to metal it was probably American alt rock. It's on my shelves. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ ★★★★☆ (8/10) Total reviewed : 184 Already owned : 42 Purchased : 7 Buy : 5 Nope : 130

Só conhecia uma música deles - “Where Is My Mind?” Achava que eram mais vibes chill, i guess not O álbum chama-se Bossanova mas de bossa nova não tem nada “Dig for Fire” bem haja brendon pelos ensinamentos de triângulo A intro da down to hell parecia que ia ser plagio da the man who sold the world Stormy Weather - não sei como caralhos eles tocavam isto ao vivo mas literalmente está sempre a mudar de dinâmicas e velocidade Havalina é vibes

3,7* Eita não tava à espera deste metal pesado do nd na 2 faixa aakakakak, e esta letrs tmb mt criativa, só 1 frase a música toda akaka Faixa 3 "Velouria" amei, imagino me a ouvir isto a estourar enquanto conduzo, that's a good sign Is she weird, is she white - hm ok akaka Velouria, Alisson, Ana, Betty, Havalina ns qm são vcs mas o pa lucky girls q têm músicas q falam em vcs akakaka Não percebi pq eq o album se chama Bossanova akakaka Gostei do álbum, tem uma vibe top, ouviria again. Fav song: Velouria

Só não e melhor que o doolitle ou surfer rosa

Pleasantly surprised! Reminds me of the cure, smashing pumpkins, and a bit of grunge 🕺🏻 I rate it!

I was in between a 4 and 5 but I think I’ll settle on a 4 because I’m not confidently at a 5. I really liked the sound of this. I’ve always meant to listen to more of their songs but never got around to it until now.

Really enjoyed this. Sits at a 4 for me on first listen but I suspect given a few more plays through I would be reaching for the 5 card.

Pretty weird, but a lot of fun. I really liked their more out there tracks. Listened to this one a few times since it first showed up on the list and liked it a little more each time. Favorite Song: Hang Wire

That was quite enjoyable - I've only ever heard Debaser by the Pixies. would listen again.

Solid rock

yes i'm blown away

Há mais de 20 anos esse foi o primeiro álbum do Pixies que ouvi inteiro. Comprei o CD em uma lojinha de discos perto de onde eu estudava e ouvi muito no meu discmann a pilha. O disco continua ótimo. QoA Cloudscape.

Mer rakt fram-rock än Doolittle, men fortfarande unikt och säreget. Mjukare och mer melodier. Lyfter låtar som Ana, My Velouria, The Happening, Havalina med flera.

168/1001 Pixies - Bossanova Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ✅ Whilst it doesn't have the incredibly great tracks like Surfer Rosa or Doolittle have, this is a a thoroughly consistent listen. There's the weirdness you get from Pixies, but also a level of polish about it. It's an extremely solid album.

Previously rated: #812 - Surfer Rosa (4/5) #289 - Doolittle (4/5) *************************** Album #996 I listened to this over a week ago, so I've forgotten the specifics, but I thought it was unique sounding and wanted to give it another listen, so 4/5 again.

Classic Pixies sound: fun, creative with the unique atmosphere that Pixies deliver

Not the most popular album from the pixies or one that I might use to introduce the pixies to someone. But solid album and very enjoyable

By this record Pixies were everywhere on college radio. I purchased this on CD and played it regularly for the kids at the school I was teaching science and math at. So frequent was this album in rotation that most of the kids could sing along to the deeper cuts. Surprisingly, for me anyway, was that the album opened up with Cecilia Ann, originally by the Surftones. Blew my mind as they stay remarkably true to the original. A little more aggressive perhaps but still pretty close to the original. Normally this would be buried towards the end of the record but here it works beat leads straight into Rock Music with Frank screaming repeatedly Your Mouth’s a Mile Away for most of the song. Velouria still sounds great after 35 years. Oblique lyrics which only make sense when you sing them. How does Lemur skin reflect the sea? Good question. What does that even mean? Somehow it all works. Straight forward rocker Allison has hints of the surf guitar but is just a teaser as Dig For Fire, The Happening and Hang Wire fill out the record with catchy sing-a-long songs. It’s a very good record and can be played on repeat without fear of the dreaded overplayed label that comes with some records. It’s the grit, it’s the grunge, it’s Kim who adds the nuances that make the songs so enjoyable. Top shelf this one! 4/5

feb 11th 2026 just what i like , i started off really strong then took a bit of a dive towards to end, but overall i fuck with it,

Really enjoyed havalina - quite dreamy and a great ending to the album. A solid album with a cohesive vibe but still takes from different genres for some contrast - great to just have on in the background.

me senti teletransportada pra juventude dos anos 90. shoutout pra is she weird.

Thats a good album! Every song has its own unique feeling, but without falls into the consistency of the album. Even keeping the wholeness of it, it was made in a way that every song has its own thing. It is new, even being old. I can see how pixie is a great band. Before listing to this album, i thought that it was a band of one song only, but goddam, how i am happy to be wrong. This album is amazing!

Great album!

Don't get me wrong, it's a great album - it's Pixies, duh. But well, I think Where Is My Mind? made me subconsciously expect every song of theirs to be some single-being-worthy hit with greater purpose ahead. But, well, no. It's just a very well-written alt rock album which I enjoyed and I might come back to, but I wouldn't call it an ethereal experience.

Damn, sure. Ok Pixies. My apologies, I was unfamiliar with your game. I don’t know where this came from, but I kind of loved it. I feel kind of bad saying the intro song “Cecilia Ann” is my favorite, but it is. I feel bad about it specifically because it doesn’t have any vocals, and I really did like this guys voice as well. I don’t know if you could call it a great representation of the band, but it’s getting added to my favorites playlist regardless. It was not only the perfect intro, but it had a classic surfing music vibe and reminded me of “Miserlou”, one of my favorite songs. Pixies are a band I’ve heard by name only, and can only pull their biggest hit out of my head “Where Is My Mind?”, which is not on this album, but I did also recognize “Is She Weird” from this album, so that was cool. I’m almost certain there are more songs I would recognize if I heard them by the Pixies. It’s one of those bands, you know the ones I mean. Can’t think of any songs you know, but end up recognizing more than you thought you would. This album was not your usual generic Indie Rock, it’s full of a bunch of different sub genres that jump from song to song and range from Surfer Rock, Hard Rock, Stoner Rock, Indie Rock, Punk Rock, and many more. All that is to say, it never gets boring. To me, this is a 4.0 on the dot. It JUST reaches into the territory of being outstanding, but still far from perfect. I found myself running into a good issue to have with this album a few times today. Every time the album would end and restart, I’d find myself saying “Damn, that was the entire album??”. At 39 minutes and 14 songs a pop, this one feels more like it lasts for 10 minutes. Like I said, it’s a good problem to have. This is the first of 3 Pixies albums I have rolled for this this project, and currently the lowest rated on the website. That absolutely shocks me. You’re telling me they get even better?? There’s a very high likelihood I give this band a 5 or 2 before this project is over if they keep kicking this much ass. Good stuff here. Will be returning to it for sure. I’m a big fan of this. Badass album art as well.

It always amazes me how weirdly good they sound.

I prefer "Surfer Rosa" but it's the Pixies. That's almost always gonna be 4 stars at least.

não achei que ia gostar tanto. vou colocar 3,5, mas dependendo dos próximos de pixies que saírem pode ser que eu aumente para 4.

I avoided listening to this one for a while as I'd always heard people say that it's not the best Pixies album. That's a fair assessment but it's still pretty great. "Bossanova" lacks the obvious hits but otherwise fits right in with the band's style, merging proto-grunge and post punk with surf rock and

Huge fan of Allison. Pretty good, enjoyed the guitar riffs

wild wild stuff

Great percussion Killer funk love it

I don't know what it is about Bossanova, but something about it charms endlessly. It's not the Pixies' best album, but it is so strong in spite of turmoil within the band. Kim Deal fades even further into the background than on Doolittle, but she would inject the surfy vibes from this album into the next The Breeders album. I think Deal would appreciate that the last truly 'good' Pixies album was the last one she was on. To their credit, while the songwriting isn't as inspired as previous records, there are some real earworms here, from beginning to end. Bossanova also gets the benefit of being newer and fresher to me, whereas I have played Doolittle to death. This is probably the Pixies album I reach for most often these days.

The Pixies have always struck me as pretty good, but not great. I feel like I should like them more - all the stuff I typically like is there - but they just don't quite connect. I've listened to their catalog quite a bit, in an effort to try to like them more, and I can't think of an album I would give a 5 to . . . or a 3.

I love Velouria, Ana, and Havalina. I like quite few more than that on this record. They kind of perfected their sound on this album, but it kind of makes me miss the less engineered feeling of the previous records. While they are not my favorite songs on their respective albums, I like the slapdash nature of Tony’s Theme or Hey. This album is more intentional. I also think that my introduction to the Pixies went Doolittle, back to Surfer Rosa and then Bossanova and that is affecting my perception of the relative value.

A mix of alt. rock, grunge, and slightly surfer vibes. Not wholly my taste but would definitely listen to again. Plus Pixies are just iconic anyway.

I, for one, really dig the Pixies sound. It's dark and visceral and loud, but also energetic and powerful and also subdued. I can see why Pixies were such an influential sound for later bands. While this album is not my favorite by Pixies (hellooo Doolittle!), it is still a great sampling of their sound. I could listen to it again and again.

Love the pixies

loved it, love the pixies. all the songs were great!

If there's a band that mixes excellent hooks and melodies with weird and quirky tricks, it's Pixies. It's a lovably noisy album. They definitely wear their influences on their sleeves and mix it all into a cornucopia of their own.

Not my cup of tea

Pixies feel like they are from another planet. Such strange choices that don’t all work in the moment, but add up to a crazed, manic, awesome whole. The more I listen to them the more I love them. Surreal and aggressive is a mix you don’t see a lot but it works. There might be it be a single here but the album works so well together I don’t think it matters. Can also hear their influence on alt rock ever since, esp w bands like modest mouse, dinosaur junior, ween.
