A perfect album.
Something about The Pixies just speaks to the Gen Xer in me. People seem to forget how different they were from every other band on earth when they were putting out these albums because they were copied so much. This is my third favorite album of theirs after Dolittle and Surfer Rosa, but it's still nearly perfect. The only negative I have to say about this one is there's not nearly enough Kim Deal compared to their earlier albums. But that's because she was off making another of my favorite albums, Pod by the Breeders
I just love the Pixies
A really great album! It was energetic, a lot of variety, and oozing with that quirky 90's music style. I've heard the usual Pixies songs, but never listened to a full album. I'm very glad to have rectified that. I get why they're held in such high esteem by people.
Velouria Allison Is She Weird All Over the World Down to the Well Hang Wire
I love Pixies but I actually only own the Death to the Pixies best of album, so I know like half of these songs and some others were half familiar from streaming a few times, but first time listening to this fully and ya it was great!
Like opening - starts off strong - and liked everything after.
It's a great album and I wish planet of sound was on it as well.
A poppier sound than Doolittle and Surfer Rosa but still stands the test of time.
I had somehow never listened to Bossanova by Pixies before, even though I already knew and loved some of their songs. Listening to it now, I was surprised by how much I could hear the influence it had on many alternative bands. The spacey atmosphere of the album especially reminded me of Muse, while the connection to Nirvana almost goes without saying. Songs like “Velouria” and “Is She Weird” make that influence feel very clear. It’s interesting to discover just how influential Pixies were, and it makes me wish I had paid more attention to them earlier.
So new so cool.
Another fave!
Before: It's not my favorite Pixies album, but it's a darn good one. My favorite album by them is not even on this list, Trompe Le Monde. Anywhoo, this is probably going to be a 5. I've probably listened to it 100+ times already, but here goes, one more time. During: It does have a few weakish songs but still, 11 out of 14 are good enough to make it on my favorites of 1990 list. I only have 56 total for 1990 so the Pixies comprise 20% of the list. You'd think it would be my favorite album for 1990 but I have to give that spot to Mazzy Star's, She Hangs Brightly. OMG, that album is not even on this list, nothing by Mazzy Star is. How is that possible? After: Yeah, it's a 5.
Incroyable
cecilia ann as the intro was so epic and tuff What a tuff album overall I need to get into the pixies more If u like this check out myslovitz cuz it lowk remjnded me of the polish rock scene
Alternative rock, space rock, grunge.
teenage fever dream. but late.
Two words....Kim Deal
Goes hard
wow. i never got into the pixies more than doolittle, and wow i loved this. cecilia ann was a great start the the album. overall lovely journey
was zalig album ! zeer goeie muziek top
Loved it I mean...it's the pixies duh
Banger no skip Allison meilleur son
abzolite favs
After Come On Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa and Doolittle this has always felt a bit of a let down. But…compared to all the other albums by other bands its still 5 Star. I like the surf element that appears here and continues in Frank Black’s solo career and even in Kim Deal’s fantastic recent album Nobody Loves You More.
Love it - sick band listened to their other albums aswell
The Pixies’ final masterpiece. More polish and refinement from their earlier work, but none the less impactful.
9/10 Incredible!
I had a great time listening to this album. I knew a few of the tracks from it. It feels like it has a bit less of an edge compared to Doolittle, but it’s still good overall with some really catchy books and basslines. It’s been really nice to get to revisit Pixies, since I hadn’t really listened to their stuff in years, then got 2 albums within a month of each other. I will probably listen to this one again.
I really enjoyed this one. Even though I’ve been familiar with the band I never really listened to them. I enjoyed seeing how varied music they have done. I didn’t know songs like “rock music” or other, I liked seeing that side of them. Other songs were also in line with my taste.
I love it so much. Perfectly listenable and all around great music for just listening.
I know Surfer Rosa much better, but this is a solid record. No skips. Great musicianship and lyrics.
One of many great pixies albums
Iconic
***** ..and I have the cover framed in my dining room. 1. Velour is 2. Is She Weird 3. Dig For Fire 4. The Happening ..and it’s not their best!
This was great! As a casual Pixies fan up to now I knew five or six songs; I think Velouria was the only track from this one that was even slightly familiar. I liked practically all of this a lot so it's hard to single out other tracks, but some of my favorites were Cecilia Ann, Allison, Is She Weird, and Stormy Weather.
5/5 - The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Not enough albums on this list have that quality, so I'll give it high marks for that. This has all the qualities of a PIxies album you'd expect along with a few tracks you can take home with you. It's a big comfy chair of loud-soft-loud and offbeat lyrics. Yes, please.
Gigantic
YES! I love the Pixies and this album!
Had never heard any of these before, but have given this album an unfair amount of listens over the last few days. At first, this was landing quite average, and was convinced it was just not anywhere near as good as Surfer Rosa or Doolittle, but now I would put it up there. Extra points for the pacing and song placement of this album, something these guys always do so well. I especially love how the first two tracks kind of build up to Velouria, and we kind of get these chunks of songs working so well together throughout the album - love the mix of long instrumentals like Ana and All Over the World and then lyrically dense moments like the end of The Happening. Another very Pixies thing is that guitar work on songs like "Is She Weird" where he's playing the exact melody of the vocals. Really fun. Will come back to this one.
ok I love the pixies but have never given this album a proper listen. I was stupid for that. This is amazinG!!
One of my favourite bands and have listened to this album many times - currently sitting on an unused CD rack near me (like all my CDs). It's not as raw or edgy as the earlier efforts but probably their most polished and consistent, an amazing sound all-round. Production is spot on and Joey Santiago's guitar has never been better. Whilst nothing grabs your attention like Debaser or reaches the frenzied intensity of Gouge Away, as an album this probably all ties together the best. Velouria is obviously a standout all-timer, but there isn't a lot of filler at all here, the first eight songs in particular a great little run, from the instrumental of Cecilia Ann through to Dig for Fire. It's pretty timeless as just a superb rock album now 35 years on. There are three unmissable Pixies albums that are easily full marks, but this would be the last great album they would do before the disappointing Trompe le Monde (at which point the grunge movement had caught up with them), and the subsequent other projects .
Unsurprisingly I love this album. I think it’s hard to rate the first four pixies albums because they’re sort of different but excellent in their own way this one is kind of a subtle record sometimes even though it starts with a crazy rock song I love this surf elements on this and it’s a real guitar record.
10/10 Pixies. They make good music. thank you. 11-04-2025
Ah sweet Frank always a pleasure ❤️

Superb!
top. may be biased xq ya lo conocia, o xq mi novio dijo q le encanta, pero top
Definitely in the top few albums on the list so far. I've never heard much of the Pixies aside form the big ones that everyone knows. Pleasantly surprised with how awesome they are. I'm gonna be cycling this album a lot. Not every song is a top track, but I added almost all of them. I think my favorite was The Happening
I love this album.
I think every pre-breakup Pixies record is a classic. Good excuse to listen to this one.
By definition, a group of albums has to have a least favorite. And this might be my least favorite of the pre breakup Pixies. But that doesn't mean it's not great, because it is. I'll gladly listen to this (or any of those) albums again.
Discazo.
This is such a classic album! Pixies at their peak. Liked Songs Added: Velouria Alison Ana All Over The World Dig For Fire Stormy Weather Havalina
Wonderful album, I know it well.
Pixies! 5/5
pixies are an absolutely brilliant music group and they show it to their extended and they album. I found it thrilling throughout and I can imagine myself listening to it again I already did once
"Rock Music"! A clapper but not their finest though, see "Come On Pilgrim"
I knew I really liked this, I didn't know I loved it
ana
A weird and surprising album
All 3 Pixies albums here kick ass.
4.5

Brilliant
Another from one of my favorite bands of all time! While it may not be my #1 album from them, it's got some of their most interesting, almost jazzy melodic structures and such a unique vibe. Saw them perform it (and Trompe Le Monde) about a month back at night one of their two night residency I attended, incredible show.
Perfect. I live the Pixies and have heard this album 100s of times. I'm actually going to see them (minus Kim Deal) live in a couple days. I'm calling this one 4.5 stars since it's not my favorite album of theirs, but that will round to 5. 4.5 #176
peakxies
I really loved this album. The pace, the rhythm, and the emotional undercurrent all clicked for me. It feels cool and controlled but still expressive. Velouria with its theremin stood out as especially mysterious and whimsically romantic.
Love me some pixies! It’s no surfer Rosa but still some great tracks
it is time for stormy weather
Favourites: All of them!
My favorite Pixies album after Doolittle.
I LOVE THIS! One of my fav bands ever!
Was always more familiar with Doolittle, but this album was better
Should be 100/10
Najbolje pjesme su mi ( redom ): "The Happening", "Havalina", "Velouria" i "All over the world" ali AS I SAID, svaka pjesma je banger!!!!
1 of 3 must-have Pixie albums....
Cracking album.
own
One of my all time favourite records.
90s alt rock. Interesting Western rock opener. Incredible guitars. A hint of goth, epic. Dark and sexy.
Cool
This is a great album. I'll be returning to it. Songs were great and though it's alt-rock through and through, they wear their influences on their sleeve and it's a mish mash of great stuff. 4.5/5
Really solid album, I’m almost upset I never looked into this one! I didn’t get to finish it but I think this is actually a 5 star. I really love the. 90s alt rock feel.
Yeah dude
Pretty strong album overall. Not the kind to have massive hits, but a must-listen for sure for anyone who likes early 90s alt rock.
Pixies move away from the punkier edges of their 80s stuff for poppier hooks on this masterpiece, while still absolutely shredding. Probably their last five star worthy record, although there's definitely a case to be made for Trompe Le Monde. Feels like the pinnacle of the sound they're now chasing with their more characterless recent output
I need to stop spamming 5/5s but pixies are so peak that I have to. Therefore, 5/5
This, weirdly, was my first route into the Pixies because I loved Velouria so much (and it remains a firm favourite of mine). It's not as loaded with hits as something like Doolittle, but I really love the majority of tracks on here. The music is on-point. I love the opening track so much with those driving guitars. I like their attitude. I like the harmonies. I like how short and sweet so many of the tracks are. I like their weird, quite basic, sometimes non-sensical lyrics. They're doing their own thing and they're owning it. 4.5 rounded up.
Love the whole thing. Surf me, Amadeus.
Incredible!
This one is without a doubt Pixies's best album.
Love the Pixies. Out of the gate, mixes in some fun surf guitar. Has a lot of energy. Can easily see influence on Nirvana.
Love this record! 5 stars for the Pixies!
I'm not as familiar with the first couple of Pixies albums so it was delightful to experience this. I loved every second of it and hope this indicates that more of their stuff will be on this list.
Love this album. The happening is an all time favorite of mine.
The more I listen, the more I love it. It's an incessant barrage of wailing to woozy bangers. Bossanova produces some of the highs of the Pixies' career. An unceasing tide of surreal alt-rock melodies, awash with the heavy reverb and delicious licks of a surf-rock guitar, set to ethereal vocal harmonies. And losing none of its unique edge. I see this as an evolution of their sound. A noirish beaut.
Good album. Diverse vocals and a cool musical style
It's the Pixies, and I could listen to them forever, and on this album, I'm particularly drawn to "Is She Weird". I hit repeat several times. Their voices, the lyrics, and the guitar sounds... It's a cacophony of bliss.
Awesome!
Can't believe I've never heard this before, and like that it clearly has 60s influences... but that is only a part of the sonic cornucopia, not the whole thing.
I prefer the last two albums, but this one is still great. 4.5
Beginning of the quash of Kim Deal's contributions, but still a solid album
Absolutely fine.
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 5/5 Favs: The Happening, Ana, Rock Music
All day long this album is a 5 for me. Absolutely faultless from start to finish. Easily my favourite Pixies album too.
çok iyi rockandroll baby rock musicdeki metal dokunuşuda çok iyiydi nedense pixie diyince aklıma peri geliyor
great listen
Yeah I love this album. Probably Pixies at their most garage rocky. It's maybe my least favorite of their Surfer Rosa to Trompe le Monde run, but I think all four of those records are basically masterpieces. So I gotta go 5
All time great
Overall a great alt rock album, with a bit of grunge and weirdness mixed in. Starts with a fun intro, before transitioning into a bunch of Catchy 90s alt rock like Velouria (which Weezer has a good cover of, even though I’m not usually a fan of covers), Allison, and All Over the World, with a couple of goth-tinged songs mixed in. The second half of the album wasn’t as memorable for me, but I think that’s just because there aren’t any weird/different songs to break things up. Most of the songs are great but not amazing on their own, so I think listening to them all together (with stuff like Is She Weird mixed in) made the experience better.
Not sure why this album isn't as respected as the first two Pixies records. A parade of bangers, Velouria and Dig for Fire maybe top 5 Pixies tracks ever for me.
This is an album I knew and liked, but on revisiting I have grown to absolutely love it. I can see what the fuss is all about now - an incredible piece of work, from beginning to end.
Not first time listen. Catchy songs throughout. Good melody to all songs. Stand out song - Dig for fire
Excellent.
pixies are the ultimate "listened as a kid and wasn't into it but revisited as an adult and just went 'oh word'" band
Not my favourite pixies album, but still amazing.
Hey, it’s my third-favorite pixies album! Listening for the first time in a while, I like it even more than I remember. It’s very melodic, surfy, and fun. Needs more kim deal, though!
Something awful this way comes.
okay I’ve always wanted to be someone who likes the pixies, but I haven’t tried very hard. perhaps my manifestation has made me biased, but this rocked me. I l fuck heavy with the surf rock mixed with this nastiness. I listened to this on a power walk and had to physically fight the urge to crawl around on all fours like a beast. that’s an instant 5/5
Have loved this album since it came out.
Album #100 and I really liked this one, not a Pixies album I'm familiar with. Has the quiet loud quiet elements of their first 2 records but the sound seems bigger, a really good listen from start to finish
I feel like the first two Pixies albums were better but this is a good album with a few meh songs. I would give this a 4.75 stars
I didn't know I was a Pixies fan but wow, now I'd say I definitely am. I was pretty familiar with other 90s grunge but just never looked into these guys. Saved a bunch of songs and will be back. Really happy that I was surprised!
A start I wasn’t to sure on turned into a great album! Loved it!
Everything about this is top tier for me.
I love the instrumental that opens it. A nice thesis statement of sorts. I might like their first couple of albums more, but this is still some quality stuff from one of my favorite bands. Good loud music, good lyrics, good frenzied apocalyptic mindset.
Favorite tracks: Velouria, Is She Weird, All Over The World, Dig For Fire, Down To The Well, The Happening Aah this is just so fun to listen to! I don't know how to describe how this music makes me feel... it matches an aesthetic that resonates with me. A little silly, a little grungy. I want to live in its world. Does that make sense? I'm surely biased because I already love the Pixies, though I'm less familiar with this album. Who cares! 5 stars, I love this.
This is cool. More punk than dolittle. Properly angsty.
I LOVE the Pixies! This album in particular brings me back to the end of me living in Seattle and the transition of moving back to CA. Definitely a staple album in my life and a significant band as well!
Great!
Refreshing and energetic.
i LOVE Cecilla Ann. One of the best opening tracks to an album I know. I have all the pixies albums digitally, but do not own any physically. I need to change this. This album is, and always has been fantastic, and it is not even their best album, but it is just one standout track after another. 4.5 stars rounded up
An absolute masterpiece of music. A combination of catchy melodies with sharp (but not too sharp) guitar sounds, characteristic of Pixies. Undoubtedly the best album of this band. You can listen to it in any circumstances and it will never get boring.
Perhaps not as good as Doolittle, but it's a brilliant and cohesive album in its own right. I think I also generally like rock songs about aliens/scifi stuff -- Bowie, Radiohead etc. The "demented surf rock" also chimes with Inherent Vice by Thomas Pynchon which I just read and loved (not seen the film adaptation).
Wowzers, talk about a great old time!
Pixies were my absolute favourite band in my late teens. I must have played this album thousands of times on my walkman going to and from school. I probably played it even more than Doolittle. This is a bigger and slicker sounding album - that's the surfrock influences at work - but it is just as varied. I think that's what I liked about the band foremost: they did angry shout-y stuff, grungy and intense songs, more poppy tracks, fast ones, slow ones. I am easily bored. Listening to the Pixies I am not.
Every. Single. Song. 10/10.
Nothing but love for this album.
Loved this band! Can’t believe I’ve been missing out on them for so long (I have probably heard some of their hits before)
Excellent!
Favourite tracks: Cecilia Ann; Alison; is she weird; all over the world; ana; hang wire
This is not my favorite Pixies album, but I think all the original albums are worth 5 stars. They still sound amazing, and the songwriting is still surprising and fresh, even after I've listened to them so many times. Yes, many bands took things from The Pixes, but no one has been able to completely replicate or replace what they did, and I don't think anyone ever will, especially this far out. There were just too many things that led to the lightning in a bottle that were that band. Yes, the Pixies themselves are still around and making new music, but even they are obviously something different.
Best one yet. Gonna come back to it
I always adore Pixies, they are like one of my favorate 80s-90s alter rock band. Bossanova is a classic and I love it. It's a pleasure to revisit this album, and good to know I still enjoy it.
It is rather fitting that I get to check out my first album from the Pixies on this journey the day before they release their next album, The Night the Zombies Came. Their third album Bossanova, while not as much of a standout compared to the preceding Doolittle or Surfer Rosa, is still a fun and weird album in its own right. Continuing to blend elements of surfer rock into their spaced-out alternative sound, vocalist/guitarist Black Francis wrote and crafted songs with the band that illicit this sense of tempered chaos. From the opening instrumental "Cecilia Ann" into cuts like "Dig for Fire" and "Is She Weird", there is an otherworldly quality to the tracks that allowed the Pixies to have fun in their slightly bizarre ways, filtered through the reverb production of Gil Norton. While I look forward to checking out the new album from the Pixies along with their first two albums on this journey, I certainly enjoyed Bossanova in its own right. I can see this album growing on me. Give it a chance. Update 3/24/2025: I listened to Bossanova over a hundred albums later, especially after listening to Doolittle for this list. This album grew on me, where I picked up more jaunty hooks and riffs and my appreciation for each of these tracks improved on the revisit. I feel like I was used to the maniacal screaming of "Debaser" opening Doolittle and I looked for more of that chaotic energy going on here. Yet there is enjoyment to be found in the more quiet, surfer-esque style here that continued their songwriting success paired with Gil's production. While the lyrics are mostly nonsensical ranging from Francis Black's ex-girlfriend to aliens to the Havalina which is a wild boar, the instrumental arrangements and vocal deliveries worked wonders in the wackiness of it all I honestly didn't mind it. It's funny how that can work.
Love Pixies. Love this album. This and Trompe le Monde are definitely underrated compared to Surfer Rosa and Doolittle. But they are just as great in my opinion. Pixies are definitely in my top 5 favourite bands. I even like their new stuff. New album coming out tomorrow!
Everything after the first two songs is 🔥
Shows a diverse range from a band I was aware of but not overly familiar with. Will be listening to much more from them.
“ From distant star to this here bar The me, the you, where are we now? Hurray the blues of everyone ALLYSON” Enough said.
I don't know why I haven't listened to the Pixies before this. So good, so deserving of their reputation. There's so much variety, ups and downs, slower stuff and faster stuff, love it. The way the album starts is great love the slap in your face that "Rock Music" brings. The surfer vibes are great. This album is absolutely immaculate.
4.6 2x another classic to me
8.7/10 👍🏻
What a stunner of an album. "Rock Music" is the weakest link, but it's still a decent tune.
Excellent. Raw and gritty but also melodic and easy to listen to.
I really enjoyed this album.
As a fan of the whole 90's grunge era, I know I'm supposed like the Pixies, but honestly, I don't. I never have.
To me this was totally different then the Pixies' first two albums but I still really dug it. This was harder and you can see how they grew and helped to develop the 90s rock era but still kept their own Pixie charm. The Happening really was a perfect mesh of their previous sound with those newer 90's sounds.
One of my favorite albums by one of my favorite bands! This one is maybe not quite as good as Doolittle or Trompe le Monde. I give it a 4.5 but they start the album with an instrumental. I love a good instrumental. so... cinco.
This was like being back dancing the night away at Le Diapason I my teens
Outstanding, one of the last truly great bands.
What I consider a gem of punk from the 90s. Has aged extremely well and I think its better today than it was when I was in grade school. Amazing producing, order, recording, clear sound. Just one of the greatest post punk albums ever
Great album not even their best imho Standout album after some recent ropey choices been provided
Obligatory 5 yayy pixies yaayyyy
Another great album by Pixies. Another great album to listen at maximum volume. Another great album to remember the first time I heard it. A few days later I played "Rock Music" for my roommate who was in a band and loved hard rock and heavy metal, and his face absolutely melted. His respect for my twee indie tastes grew three sizes that day. Another memory of getting this on a vinyl repress after my divorce and absolutely rattling the plaster off the walls with it. And to think this is commonly regarded as only the third best Pixies album.
Great album by the Pixies
An effortless cool Layered in wild chants and riffs Beauty and madness
Great.
There have been a handful of artists who, after getting exposed to their music through this project, have had their discographies become a regular part of my musical rotation. The Pixies are one of these artists. This record is super good. I love the industrial sort of off-rythym sound they have, coupled with the signature '90s alt and grunge vibe. If this is what all surf rock sounds like (I have no idea, honestly), then I'm a fan of the genre. Standouts are Allison, Is She Weird, Down to the Well, and The Happening.
My 3rd Pixies album from the all mighty generator. While they've all been mostly enjoyable, Kim Deal is standout for me. But I think their 2nd album is better.
I don't listen to the Pixies much. This album explains to me why I'm wrong.
I love the Pixies. But this is their last really good record. That’s why it’s even more important!
Brilliant
Well let’s start by saying that I’d give any of the first few Pixies albums a 5, so thats got that out of the way pretty easily. Just such a unique band, so sinister and brutal yet beautiful and kinda euphoric. While they’ve been a massive influence on others, nobody ever has or likely will sound like them. Anyway, listening to this again (for the thousandth time) got me on the age old question of what’s your favourite Pixies album. I don’t think it’s the most common view but this always comes out as mine. Which might seem odd given Kim Deal had a massive back seat on this one (start of the fall-outs I think). I think for me the thing I most like about the Pixies is the rhythm guitar and those chugging odd chord progressions that drive everything. This album of all of them I think has that more to the forefront. Plus as an album it just builds from start to finish (every song just seems to get better) and by Hang Wire and Stormy Weather you’ve got just the most fantastic crescendo. I suspect this would be in my Top 10 on this list as a whole (and we’ve still got 3.5yrs of it left to go!).
This was my gateway drug to the world of US rock on the bus to school and it stills sounds amazing today. Who knows what nonsense he's screaming about but it made sense to me at the time. Plus as a geographer, there was the bonus of a song about the weather. Just awesome.
Pretty good
Love it! On repeat all day.
Cecilia Ann- this song actually makes me feel like I'm in an action movie. Rock Music- this song has the perfect title. I like the way Frank screams the lyrics. Velouria- I can't even decribe my feelings for this song. It makes me ascend. I love it so much. I think it can be agreed that this is the best song on the album. Allison- I also love this song. It is such a vibe. "I saw the face of Allison" is delivered perfectly. Is She Weird- this is such an amazing song. The bass is really what pulls this together. This feels like an ideal Pixies song. "Is she over me?" *chef's kiss* Ana- this song reminds me of wasting away in the sunlight. This is the first song I ever heard off of this album and I'll always love it. All Over the World- this song reminds me of the apocalypse and experiencing death. This is a great song. It feels so Pixies. Dig for Fire- I've never been a huge fan of this song. It doesn't feel like the Pixies. It feels to happy and upbeat. It's safe to say this is my least favorite track off the album. Down To The Well- this song is angsty. Once again, it was never one of my favorites. The Happening- this song also reminds me of the end of the world. I like to pair it with All Over the World. Blown Away- this song is so easy to forget sometimes. It didn't even do anything wrong. It sounds good, so why don't I treat it like it is? Hang Wire- this is a good angsty song. I feel like a villain listening to this. "That man is a liar" perfect. Stormy Weather- this is a pretty okay song. It's not one of my favorites off of the album. It is kind of a bop, though. Havalina- I also feel like wasting away to this song. I like to pair it with Ana. I like this song. It sparks some emotion that I literally can't describe. It's like the song is trying to say goodbye to the listeners. Overall- this is not my first time listening to the album. It's not even my fifth time. I love this album and I love the Pixies. Although this isn't their best or their most iconic album, it is still worth the listen. My favorite tracks are Velouria, Ana, Is She Weird, Allison, and Havalina. Although the second half does feel a little filler, the first half makes me want to ascend. 5/5
Right fucking on, man! I’ve been rewarded. The universe heard my desperation while I was going through it with that Radiohead shit yesterday and maybe somehow knew I’m seeing the Pixies this weekend? This album is a tour de force, so many incredible songs. Whenever “what’s your favourite Pixies album” is asked I find it impossible to decide. This whole album flows so perfectly, and every track has something unique to engage, either musically or lyrically. I love this band. They are so underrated and unappreciated (at least in the circles I'm stuck running in.) For a period of time there the Pixies were putting out straight fire, year after year and I wish I'd come of age in their peak era. Is she weird? Yes! Is she white? YES! Is she married to the night? Yes Yes! Feels like this album was made for my ears because they love every note and want there to be more. It's just so fucking good!
The first song is one of the worst I’ve ever heard, but the rest of the album rated a five
Out of the original Pixies' albums this one is probably my least favorite, because the second half has some filler. But it is still the Pixies so it is amazing and I did enjoy it more than previous listens. This album also has some of my all time favorite Pixies' songs: Velouria, Is She Weird, The Happening, Ana I recommend seeing them live if you get the chance. 4.5
A true banger of an album. Every single song fucks!
come on man its pixies
Wow!
One of the great ones of this era. More to come from this band
AMAZING
Generally not held in as high regard as Doolittle, I listened to the album waiting for a few clunkers. They never arrived. A solid album from start to finish. Highlights being Velouria, Ana, Allison and Is She Weird. Admittedly, the highs don’t quite reach the Doolittle highs, but it’s a more consistent album overall.
5/5 - basically a classic
A delight! I am a long time Pixies fan but didn't consider this as one of my favourite albums until giving it a couple of more active listens. What a delightful mix of strange lyrics and organized chaos. Had to resist dancing on the bus to this! The timeline on this one was perfect for my mood and has no doubt reignited my Pixies obsession. Not even my favourite Pixies album but fantastic none the less! Favourite tunes (hard to choose): Velouria, Havalina, Rock Music
This is the type of indie rock I like. Give me this style of music every day. I'd never listened to a Pixies album and this is super dope.
Not the best Pixies album by any means, but still a great listen. There are a couple of lesser quality tracks towards the end, but they don't ruin it. When I first heard this album years ago, I remember reading a review that dubbed it "the best album to listen to while driving across a desert", and I always wanted to test that theory. I finally got the chance a couple of years ago, driving from Las Vegas to Flagstaff along Route 66 in a rented Ford Mustang. Have to say, it was pretty fantastic!
HAVALINAAAAA… HAVALINAAAAAA
Album 371 of 1001 Pixies - Bossanova Rating : 5 / 5 I've grown to like the Pixies. Even more into Black Francis' releases as Frank Black. They get an extra point just because I enjoy them so and I didn't do Surfer Rosa justice when it was album of the day. Probably not a 5 to many others but today it is, for me.
A classic !
Great
Sublime
AMAZING
Velouria, Ana, Allison.
It doesn't have the hits of their other albums but Bossanova is solid.
Love Pixies.
Such an influential band. I tend to lean towards Doolittle as my favorite, but this is a great record.
OH SHIT OH DAMN OH FUCK. Finally something good! I’ve always liked this one a lot. Pixies discography is pretty much essential listening so kicking the day off with Cecilia Ann feels sooooo right. There’s so much going on right off the bat and it’s just so much fun. I can imagine pixies shows around the time this came out must have been crazy. Good ass simple fun songs with tons of energy, nice and quick listen. Doesn’t need much of a deep interpretation beyond the cool stuff that jumps out, like the crispy guitar tones in The Happening to the radio friendly Dig for Fire it’s like a good ass mess of frenzy and chill.
Pixies are in my top bands of all time. Love this album! Still holds up and my favorites are and were Velouria and Dig for Fire.
love!
As a very casual Pixies fan most of these songs are totally new to me. On a first play through, i think I actually prefer this to Surfer Rosa - it would certainly be a close run thing. Very satisfying, cohesive album with plenty of pixies weirdness
Very enjoyable from start to finish
I have this on “CD” but know Doolittle better. Man I’d forgotten HOW GOOD THIS IS!
Amazing rock album, every song is a banger
Sooo good
Probably the Pixies album I’m in the mood to listen to the most. So many classics and The Happening might be my favorite Pixies song. Only a couple misses for me on the entire album and even they aren’t bad or ruin the mood of the album. Rating: 4.9
Brilliant
Not their best record but still a gem.
For a band who essentially wrote the template on which 90s alternative rock would be based upon, their 1990s work is regarded as lesser than their 80s work. Sometimes for valid reasons (increasingly marginalized contributions by bass legend Kim Deal, to the point frontman Frank Black even steals her background vocals), sometimes for lesser reasons: Bossanova does not neatly fall into the loud-quiet-loud dynamic the Pixies have popularized. Instead, this is where Frank Black's fascination with space begins, complete with a much grander sound. Cecila Ann and Rock Music act as tonesetters for the albums, the former establishing the space surf rock and the latter reminding you Joey Santiago still was the premier guitar noise pop craftsman while Frank belts out his characteristic nerve-popping screams. Velouria is the real start, a theremin in the background underpinning the heavy guitar blasting off the song. Some of the songs are very short, par for the course for the Pixies. Alison is a fun, fast rocker, over in less than 90 seconds. Dig for Fire is a rare and nice upper song for Pixies standards. Granted, it's not always a slam dunk: Blown Away and Hang Wire are admittedly a bit too standard Pixies, while Stormy Weather is a throwaway joke track (but then again, not all Pixies albums are free of fluff). But the real strength of the album is when Pixies establish something that's not traditionally Pixies, like a more mysterious mood during Is She Weird and Ana, or longer songs that take you on an adventure, such as All Over The World (which feels like two Pixies songs stitched together) and The Happening. Granted, the changes aren't that radical. Don't expect Pixies to suddenly turn into Yes; those longer songs are four or five minutes long compared to the standard length of 2 minutes for the band. Perhaps it's because of those subtle differences that for many, this album pales in comparison to its precedessor Doolittle. Still, for me this is my favourite Pixies album. The Pixies have always flourished in the weird, kitschy and the sci-fi, and Bossanova exemplifies that strength in spades (hell the cover looks like an old Universal Pictures logo). Or perhaps it's because in subsequent albums, they become both too different and too similar to their classic work that Bossanova gets hit by association. Whatever the reasoning, if you like the Pixies, you do yourself a disservice by skipping this album. Strong 4 to a Light 5
Absolutely phenomenal album. A band that gets lost in all the nostalgia over grunge but that you can hear their fingerprints from their music. Thanks for sending this my way.
This satisfied my craving for harder rock sound. It seems to have a combination of different sounds and styles incorporated into the album.
The culmination of the post-hardcore indie trajectory before it's absorption into the majors as alt rock in the wake of Nirvana, the Pixies had forged a wicked blend of aggressive and abrasive punk sounds, slowed it down a tad and mixed in melodic elements from surf, angular guitars from post-punk, and some new-wave beats. Nothing on here is as good as the best songs on Doolittle (or Surfer Rosa) and you can kind of tell it's a band that has already accomplished it's perfect form and is trying to do more of that. But, they are damn good at doing that thing still. The vocals are just at the edge of control, a voice breaking yelling out the lyrics' abstract images. They're obviously most famous for their use of dynamics, mashing the distortion pedal to kick things up and switch intensities on a dime, but on this album they expand how they're doing dynamic juxtapositions. On Ana & Havalina, the bright clean tone on the lead guitars cuts through the dirty mix, highlighting the understated poignancy of the lines, keeping the fuzz at bay until it can't anymore and is overwhelmed. Joey Santiago is the star of this one, playing great melodic lead parts tying these songs together and standing out against the sometimes repetitive riffs. Favorites: Cecilia Ann, Ana, Havalina, Down to the Well, Hang Wire, All over the world
I love the sound, and the riffs and I even like the lyrics!!! I'm so glad I found this album! 4.5
Ahhhh ich finds sehr gut! Down to well goes harddddddd. Is she weird isch eh eis vo miine lieblingslieder EVER drum eh sympathisch hahah. Lieb d distorted guitars mit de liecht schröge vocals, eim wird au nie langwiilig bim zuelose wills iwie immer was anders isch?
Great album, should add it to the regular rotation
HOW have I not listened all the way through this one before, the first half isn't my favourite Pixies but the back end of this is LOADED. creamed my knickers to this one fr
This is what it’d be like if the B52s or Talking Heads formed as an early 90s alt-rock band. Plus the opening track is straight up a surf rock cover so that slaps!
I love the Pixies but over time have neglected this album. It has one of the great "first sides " (for those of us that had it on vinyl originally. Absolutely blasts in with their cover of Cecilia Ann and then continues in same vein with Rock Song. Plenty of changes of style, plenty based on the country music with screaming they are known for. This is a lot better than I remember it.
Opening song immediately took me to Muse - Knights of Cydonia (sp). Also hear The Talking Heads. This album came out in 1990 and I never heard any of this nor ever heard of Pixies being talked about. Harmony section of “The Happening” is a highlight. Overall exactly as I expected. Imagine myself in a coffee shop in Brooklyn being served coffee by a dude in a. brown sweater and beanie with a beard. Second listen is much better. I like this album.
I like the Pixies
Nice. Unmittelbar Lust, lauter zu hören.
Probably something of a biased opinion, but I don't think I can give any Pixies album less than a 5. This might be my least favorite (I happen to think Trompe le Monde is super under rated), but it still kicks and is way more interesting to me than most of the stuff that I've been given on this whole 1001 journey. ♥️ Pixies, 'nuff said!
Never listened to them before. Expected it to be more chaotic "punky" but found it really grooving rock at times. Listened on the plan back to CO from Xmas 2023
I love this album
Always thought Doolittle would be my favorite Pixies album because it has a bunch of songs I grew up listening to on the radio, but upon my first listen to Bossanova I think this one might be better.
Look. I love this album. I’ve listened to it more times than I can count and still discover something new on each listen.
Well it's the fucking Pixies, right?
Now, it's no Doolittle or Surfer Rosa, but that can't be the only standard. Still love it and one of their best!
Sick
Amazing album
Heard it already. Amazing album.
This is the only Pixies album I hadn’t heard beforehand, and it’s Pixies, so it’s good. I like the surf-rock influences especially. Good.
1st time I ever heard the whole album. Pretty good from start to finish with some amazing and classic songs.
Still have never seen a javelina, besides zoos. I daresay a perfect album?
Weird and wonderful
Love this album, back to back bangers the whole way through
Another album my college friends were into but I couldn’t connect with back then. Interestingly, I did get into The Breeders’ album Last Splash - but I had no idea that there was a connection to Pixies. If I had I might have made more of an effort to explore this group back in the day. Bossanova’s hard beach pop vibe kept drawing me in and by the end has won me over.
One of my all time faves. Great in yer face guitar power combuned witg weird shouting, lyrics that dont make sense but are edgy and cool. Songs that are short and pointless but incredable.
There's not a bad song on here and at least two great ones - Dig for Fire and Velouria. And Allison. Is She Weird. They're all good. This is maybe the best step up by a band ever. Expanding the sound, feeling more mature and still fun. Best part is maybe that I remembered at the end of All Over The World was when the tape would flip over. Nostalgia. 5 obvious stars.
Old favorite
I dont know if I was just in the mood, of every one of these songs hit the spot.
"Equivilant to eating a snickers bar, and I love snickers" -Jess I love this album, fantastic blend of weird almost western/surf rock but with an indie flair. Such a fun listen that goes a bunch of different directions.
Blind album, surprisingly liked it a lot like the other Pixies albums... Definitely their style and some of their catcher stuff.
Uh? Bugje?
Pixies are under appreciated for how much they affected music. One of my favorite bands
Very good omg
Velouria, Ana, Allison.
J'aime beaucoup cet album.
Rad
Another early Pixies album so of course another 5 stars mark. This one all is all more melodic than the other ones. Starts and ends with two very easily listening surf songs, Cecilia Ann and Havelina, and in between everything is going on: My favorites: Rock Music 2 minutes noise, makes the imitations like Blur's Song # 2 music for toddlers Ana: makes you shiver, so beautiful, and that in 2 minutes. Who needs these 8 min long terrible rock ballads? The Happening: Best Pixies song ever. Black Francis and UFO's and Roswell Part 1 Part 2 is on the Trompe Le Monde album, motorway to Roswell: Last night he could not make it He tried hard but could not make it Last night he could not make it On a holiday, so many miles Looking for a place to stay Near some friendly star, he found this mote And now we wonder where we are Poor alien, life on earth is a bitch Love the Pixies.
Heard before Saved 12/14 Top track: Is She Weird
What a great album. I'd call this close to 5*
should get 10 stars
Rock music!
It was nice to hear something by the Pixies other than “Where Is My Mind?” and “Hey” for once. I wasn’t properly acquainted with them beforehand. I can now see why they’re so highly regarded and influential. They are true artists in their craft.
Listened to it while walking. My dog and I felt cool; like we should’ve been wearing leather jackets and sunglasses. Bass parts were fun.
Love the Pixies and this is one of their best.
As a Pixies fan this is an album I´m always curious about, because it has the band spirit, but on its own way. It starts with an amazing instrumental song (Cecilia Ann), and then with one of the heaviest songs of this band (ironically called "Rock Music"), making a weird, but amazing experience. During the whole record the band knows to continue with the energy that represents them. Even if its not their best album, anyway, I just love this band. Fav Tracks: Cecilia Ann, All over the word, Down to the well, The Happening.
Det här tyckte jag mycket om!
Pixies at their best! Great album
Great album, even though the constant dynamic puts me to sleep at some points
There wasn’t a moment where my foot wasn’t tapping.
Some hints of The Saints, but a very fresh, original sound. "Is She Weird" is the earworm song of the day. The rest of this album was terrific from start to finish. Definitely one that I'm happy made this list.
I think I have to rate this 5 stars because I can't find anything wrong with it. Who knew?!
The kind of album I came here for. And the kind of album I wish I was aware of when it came out. The question is, would 12 year old me have appreciated it at the time? Probably not. It’s a 5 now though. 1 - bad 2 - average 3 - good 4 - great 5 - outstanding
This album is just banger after banger! Love it!
Great album, seriously enjoyed it. SO many good songs. Saved tracks: Cecilia Ann, Allison, All Over the World, The Happening
My first trip through Bossanova had me thinking: "This sounds like Pixies but its not weird enough! Two stars." I had to listen to the album twice before I understood how weird it is and I like it very much.
Classic. Perhaps not their best, but up there with them.
Really great album, interesting sound and vocals.
Velouria, Ana, Allison
A journey of an album
FAntastic
Maybe a few songs are unnecessary, but what's good is so good
Gangbusters
Great stuff incredible that it was made in 1990
Nice album. I loved how there was some 'heavy' tracks and some that are associated with pixies in my head. Atmospheric, light&heavy. I really love style of Pixies. Reverbing guitar, strange in a good way lyrics. Sometimes a had a feeling that I wasn't listening to same group, but at the same time all tracks compliment each other well.
Love the pixies!
so bon
my favorite Pixies album. The production might be a bit polished for some but the songs are really great (and Gil Norton rules anyway). Fantastic
beautiful. every song is a masterpiece. would be a crime to rate this less than a 5.
Just matchless. A classic test of a great album is that different songs reveal themselves over time. On this listen the vocals and guitar on The Happening are just amazing.
I don't know how the pixies do it. Not necessarily always melodic or approachable, it is entirely engaging... with a variety that covers anger & energy as well songs with an ethereal quality. Fantastic.
First Pixies record I ever bought. Played the hell out of it, but as I started collecting the rest of their records this one became the least favorite of them all as a teenager. Listening to this now; I don't know why this ever fell to the bottom. The reverbed out guitar, the super clean vocal harmonies, Black Francis' range from velvety smooth to gnarly growls, experimenting with the spacey dissonant melodies that made Trompe Le Monde such a great album. Easily a 5/5 album.
Great album. Already loved it. 5/5
