Nico
3/5
My ears yearned so badly for at least a little vibrato. Hauntingly wonderful tunes.

Dire Straits

Great first album. Torn between 4 and 5. Going to add this to my library even though I'm giving it 4.

Björk
4/5
Such unique compositions. Plenty of complex harmonics and syncopations on top of electronic dance beats. Love the assortment of instruments.
Hugh Masekela
4/5
Damn, that is some nice jazz to soothe to.
Moby
3/5
Impressive body of work. Nice to have on in background or to zone to, but does not really draw me in. Would rather have more expressiveness and less looping and sampling.
John Coltrane
4/5
So good, and it was done in a single take, which is a testament to the musicians. When in the mood for moving jazz, this is an excellent option.
4/5
Enjoyable listen. Need to play it a few more times to appreciate it more.
Nina Simone
3/5
What a voice, so soulful, and her piano accompaniment make for a very moving album. Very deep lyrics that I should have listened more closely to...
The Rolling Stones
4/5
It's the Stones, of course it's good and this one has their straightforward rock compositions.
Sheryl Crow
3/5
What an enjoyable intro. Nice compositions and of course her voice and singing style are nice to listen to.
Willie Nelson
4/5
So good. His compositions and portrayals seem simple yet are sublime.
The Cure
4/5
Solid overall album with mainstream influence throughout that Cure rock sound.
Pixies
5/5
Had to listen to it twice, at least. Such a good album. I can see why so many musicians have it as one of their main influences.
Lambchop
3/5
Smooth listening country alt rock pop jams. Nothing that really grabs me but the entire album is a chill, enjoyable ride.
Metallica
5/5
They're last great album, as long as you can get past Lars' neanderthal drumming (c'mon, Lars, just a little nuisance nuance or subtlety in your playing, maybe? Guess not. But that's okay, you do you.) Compared to previous albums, not all of the songs are as distinct among the tracks they're sharing vinyl with. Nevertheless, still a strong set.
T. Rex
3/5
Now I know the T. Rex sound beyond their mainstream hit (hits?). I had no idea their tunes were so pensive. Need to listen again sometime to better appreciate.
The Who
4/5
Starts out like the Monkees, gets right into their sound. Moon and Entwhistle killed it from the start.
Morrissey
3/5
Red Hot Chili Peppers
5/5
Yeah, you know you'd like this full album.
The Band
3/5
Easy listening with some complexity. Now I know where that one song comes from.
Depeche Mode
3/5
Good tunes, none of them bad. Good voice is the same over and over which feels a bit repetitive by the end, but they close with a sonata, so no complaints.
DJ Shadow
4/5
Wish I had known about this album 27 years ago! Great sampling choices and composition. He could have delved even more in places and gone full concept album, and I would have been even more pleased. Need this one for car trips.
Electric Light Orchestra
4/5
It's ELO. You know it's going to be solid. What's amazing is not that this is a double album but that Lynne wrote it all in a few days and the band laid it all down in two months. Side 3 is so good.
Goldfrapp
3/5
Neat album. Going to give it another listen.
George Harrison
5/5
The talent he displays and the talent he brought along on so many of these tracks... incredible! A triple album I want to buy, need to buy.
Massive Attack
3/5
What an interesting album! I agree with Paul Evans' review that it is "cool, sexy stuff". Was tapping along much of the time. Would not object to someone putting this album on.
Frank Ocean
4/5
Sweet R&B sounds. Wish YouTube had a better option for playing it...
Kraftwerk
3/5
Pretty cool. Don't listen to much electronic, but I totally see why this album garners so much acclaim.
Hole
4/5
Pretty good rock. Enjoyable with some memorable riffs.
Guided By Voices
4/5
Wow, had not heard of this genre before, and I am fascinated. Totally need to give this more listening time, though I wish they'd redo it in a form other than LoFi.
Beck
4/5
Pretty darned cool set of tracks. Like what all he put together and added his own touches to.
The Mamas & The Papas
4/5
Such nice melodies and composition, and the harmonies their four voices created were great.
KISS
4/5
Some KISS classics and a good set of songs all around.
Sonic Youth
4/5
Pretty enjoyable listen. I'm torn on how many stars to give due to the amount of discordance. It is a lot. I get that it is part of their genre, and I appreciate and enjoy discordance, but at times it felt trite.
Solomon Burke
3/5
Definitely the king of rock n soul.
The Smiths
3/5
Nice music, but why does the singer have to be such a freaking tool?
Pixies
3/5
Not bad. Didn't enjoy it as much as Surfer Rosa but it grew on me with the second listening.
Elbow
3/5
Nice, enjoyable music, with some especially great flourishes that moved me. The lead singer did not seem to range much, or at least I hadn't noticed him going very far outside his wheelhouse. Kind of felt rote and forced and pretentious at times to me.
Happy Mondays
3/5
Loved the music, very upbeat and you could tell the musicians were enjoying themselves. The singing got old really quickly though. Yet another album on here where I really enjoy the music but the lead singer runs it into the ground...
Black Sabbath
5/5
How can this get anything but 5 stars?
AC/DC
4/5
Good album, well done.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
4/5
It's good, of course. First time hearing it all the way through, and I liked it.
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
3/5
I can see why Zappa produced the captain. The Magic Band is awesome. Captain Beefsteak definitely presents his own version of reality. It is a shame he and the managers treated the band like shit.
Magazine
4/5
Really grew on me as I kept listening and in the second listen. Now I get an idea of what post-punk is. Good stuff.
Nico
3/5
My ears yearned so badly for at least a little vibrato. Hauntingly wonderful tunes.
Common
4/5
I found myself listening to it a third time and humming the tunes when away from the headphones. Enjoyed the overall theme of the album.
Fatboy Slim
4/5
He put down some deliberate tracks here, good stuff. Couldn't help but find myself being a nuisance to my co-workers on the third playthrough, tapping and moving along to the beats. Had fun trying to identify all the samples he used too.
3/5
Partridge's term for it "orchustic", sums it up well in feel, vibing like animated-movie music at times and feel-good flows other times. Good lyrics, with a paganism twist across a number of the scores.
Roxy Music
3/5
Interesting album. Not really sure what to make of it. Nothing really grabbed me, and nothing made me recoil, and some of the music showed a bit of complexity, but beyond appreciating the work it does not pull on me.
Dr. Octagon
4/5
The Flaming Lips
3/5
The compression on some of the songs is very harsh on my ears and distracting. Once I realized it was only on some tracks and not the entire recording, I was able to adjust and then it was nicer to listen to. Enjoyed the songs.
Dr. Dre
4/5
The beats and tunes are so incredibly good on this album that I want to continually loop it. However, the content and tone of some of the lyrics... Hard for me to get past. I'm gravely conflicted.
Arcade Fire
4/5
Entire album has enjoyable tunes, even some reminiscent of Rush.
Bauhaus
3/5
Grant Lee Buffalo
4/5
A Tribe Called Quest
4/5
Pretenders
4/5
Only ever heard The Pretenders well-known songs. So glad 1001AG selected their first album. Love the compositions and time signatures and feels of the songs, and Chrissy's presentation and interpretations on top of those... So good.
Dolly Parton
4/5
Producers forcing this new, incredible voice into short singles for radio play on country stations... It is great to hear where she broke through to compare against what she became as she evolved.
The Temptations
3/5
Good album with an enjoyable variety of styles.
Van Morrison
3/5
What a crooner! Great singing, enjoyable songs. If it were my style of music, I would absolutely add to my library.
Hookworms
4/5
Jimmy Smith
4/5
Pixies
3/5
The Everly Brothers
3/5
Public Enemy
4/5
Kings of Leon
3/5
Nothing really moved me along all these songs. They were fine, and I can listen to them, but none of them moved me.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
4/5
Have never really listened to Elvis Costello but knew some of his songs and liked them. Did not realize he started in the 70s and started so incredibly strongly. This was one hell of an album, and quite a start for The Attractions backing him.
A Tribe Called Quest
3/5
Altogether a solid album. The speaking style feels uninspiring to me, maybe it's the lack of affect in its presentation? It almost feels like the producers told everyone to tone it down. The rhymes could use more complexity too, or maybe it feels that way due to how they were presented. Good sampling but also feels toned down to me.

Simple Minds
3/5
This album would be perfect as background music for a social gathering. Everyone would enjoy it if you the time to discern and listen to it, yet it would never be in your face like some "background" music can be. It's just not my cup of tea for listening though. I must admit coding went well while it played (4 times) though...
Dire Straits
4/5
Tim Buckley
3/5
Coldplay
3/5
Mellow, easy listening music.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
Supertramp
4/5
The Smiths
3/5
It's good, but never hooked me. Not sure why. Could have been too distracted when listening to it the three times. Will have to try again in the future.
The Boo Radleys
3/5
Fun, light, not very complex. A few of the riffs grabbed me at times but overall did not pique much interest in my brain.

Tempted to remove a star for the production engineer who thought it was a good idea to use over-amplification in parts of the wall of sound. For me, that ruins what otherwise would be done very enjoyable songs to listen to.
Pink Floyd
5/5
The Libertines
3/5
So close to being 4 stars to me. Nice hooks in many of the songs but all too brief. Looking forward to hearing more of their music.
Super Furry Animals
3/5
Good listen, but doesn't move me. Not sure why. I keep listening to it with a notion that it deserves 4 stars yet it registers as a 3 each time, which confuses me.
XTC
3/5
Varies between lounge act and hymnal resonance.
Fela Kuti
4/5
Fantastically enjoyable music.
The Temptations
3/5
Funkadelic
4/5
Miles Davis
4/5
Scissor Sisters
3/5
What an interesting mix of song styles! All are quite easy to listen to (even their cover of Comfortably Numb, which conflicts me at a deep level) and generally good pop. I yearn for more complexity in their compositions though.
Madonna
3/5
Some of her well-known hits. Her actual singing. Some songs did not do much for me but her voice does justice to all of them.
Soft Machine
3/5
The Offspring
4/5
Entire album is a good listen, but I'm still torn between 3 and 4 stars. Have to go with 4 because I'd keep this album in my physical library.
R.E.M.
4/5
Also torn between 3 and 4, but I have to admit to some catchiness of the tunes.
Q-Tip
4/5
Real nice production overall and real good rapping. It's somewhere between 3 and 4 for me but definitely closer to 4.
Fleetwood Mac
5/5
Yeah, there is no question about the rating of this album. The musicianship and energy and just damned enjoyable, memorable songs pour forth from it.
Snoop Dogg
4/5
Buck Owens
4/5
Leonard Cohen
3/5
Wonderful singing, with a mood somewhere between plaintive and pensive and positive. Enjoyed the collaborative songs. Overall not my cup of tea but the entire album is a nice listen.
Bob Dylan
4/5
The Rolling Stones
4/5
Led Zeppelin
5/5
It's Zep. Of course it's a 5.
Black Flag
3/5
Really enjoyed the music, some great licks and beats and discordance in there. Lyrics are pretty good, and sometimes fun. The "singing" wears on me though. Would like to give it a better rating because it is definitely a seminal album, but no.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
The Dandy Warhols
3/5
Kind of catchy, no song excepting. However, not my thing although I can totally dig folks getting sweet vibes off their tunes.
David Bowie
5/5
When I first played this album, my thought was, "It is a 4 for sure." And then I listened to it again. And again. And finally, "Damn, this entire album is so good and memorable; 4 is not enough."
Amy Winehouse
4/5
3/5
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
Joan Armatrading
4/5
Filled to the brim with good tunes and some incredibly catchy riffs. Easy to see why this album is included in the list. Glad to have listened to it (numerous times now) and will seek it out again.
Arcade Fire
3/5
Good tunes, but just doesn't move me much for some reason. Would be happy to listen to it again or with others, but I will not seek it out.
Fleet Foxes
3/5
Very nice folk tunes. Refreshing to here such an album from the 2010's. Not my thing but I really appreciate their work and effort.
Ministry
3/5
Pretty good thrash metal. Decent listen but does not move me enough to reach for it. Needs more complexity in the musical movements.
Isaac Hayes
3/5
Good music. It's the actual soundtrack. That means it has mood builders and sustainers and all that, which makes it kind of boring to listen to when there's no movie with it.
Parliament
4/5
Yeah, this is a groovy and enjoyable album. I can't give it only 3 stars, had to be 4 because some of the songs are stuck on me.
Depeche Mode
4/5
All around good songs and has some of their most memorable.
Curtis Mayfield
2/5
Grew weary of the constant falsetto. Great tunes backing him, just wish he drop an octave more often than he does.
Circle Jerks
3/5
If you need a reason to listen to this album, do it to experience Lucky hitting those skins. Had no fore knowledge about this album or the band, and immediately Lucky's rhythms hooked me. I totally get why he's called the godfather of hardcore drumming.
Lou Reed
3/5
Good music, can listen to it no problem and even a couple hooks, but overall it does not grab me.
Air
4/5
Good music, fantastic drums.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
David Bowie
5/5
Primal Scream
3/5
Inoffensive, mellow, chill rock-ish music with house and dub influences. Not my thing but enjoyed listening to it. Well done to the musicians.
Richard Thompson
4/5
Kraftwerk
3/5
The pseudonymous track is good, like it quite a bit. The other tracks are interesting and pretty good. Overall not my style but enjoyed the tunes.
Fever Ray
3/5
Absolute respect for their work. Throughout is well-crafted music. Not my style but enjoyed it all.
Cypress Hill
3/5
Great DJ and percussion. Don't much dig the gangsta aspects of the lyrics but really good rhyme and flow.
The Zombies
5/5
Took a few listens to really appreciate how good this album is throughout. Adding to music collection for those times when I yearn for some brilliantly complex 60s composition. It's a shame the lack of commercial success of this album led to their breakup because I wonder what their successive releases would have been like.
The Notorious B.I.G.
3/5
Beatles
4/5
Jerry Lee Lewis
4/5
Julian Cope
3/5
Good music, something about his singing rubs me the wrong way though. Feels pretentious and lacking of empathy, or something like that?
Thin Lizzy
4/5
Great live album.
The Stone Roses
5/5
Enjoyable tunes brings it up to close to 4 stars, but freaking Reni's percussion, holy crap, that makes it 5. Had no idea who he was before hearing this album and so wish there more of his drum work available out there.
The Prodigy
3/5
Some awesome dance music, throughout. Not what is put in my music collection but if I were at a club I would want it playing.
James Taylor
4/5
So easy to listen to and groove to.
Germs
3/5
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
3/5
Dire Straits
4/5
Great first album. Torn between 4 and 5. Going to add this to my library even though I'm giving it 4.
Ella Fitzgerald
4/5
King Crimson
3/5
Pretty good, memorable, but for some reason that I can't put my finger on, I don't want to give 4 stars. Really need to figure out why...
Stephen Stills
3/5
4/5
I don't know why I groove with this album so much more than In The Court Of The Crimson King, but I do. Have to give it 4 stars and need to keep wondering why the other album only wants 3 from me. Just do not understand...
Devendra Banhart
3/5
Really good music, but not my thing. Difficult for me to rate...
Orange Juice
3/5
Pretty good music, some good drum riffs, but didn't really move me.
Kendrick Lamar
3/5
Sigur Rós
3/5
The Lemonheads
3/5
Not a bad tune anywhere in the album. But also no tunes that moved me. The lead singer did not use much range or employ variety. Kind of all trash together for me. Only two listens though. Maybe something will grab me after a couple more...
The National
4/5
Something indescribable (to me) about this album grabs me. Not sure what. If I contemplate any song by itself it seems somewhat unremarkable to me yet the entire album feels solid enough that I want to give it 4 instead of 3. I'm perplexed...
The Soft Boys
4/5
Creedence Clearwater Revival
4/5
Bob Dylan
4/5
The Blue Nile
3/5

4/5
The Verve
4/5
Jefferson Airplane
3/5
I really like Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship and Starship, but this album just did not do much for me for some reason. Not sure why. Individual songs in it are great and production is really good, but maybe it's too produced? I feel like a live version of this album would be absolute killer.
The Velvet Underground
4/5
Drive Like Jehu
4/5
Christina Aguilera
4/5
Never listened to Christina Aguilera before, which is a shame. Really good album.

Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
Good, but something about his style always picks at me. Can totally see the allure though.
Goldfrapp

Neil Young & Crazy Horse
3/5
Elliott Smith
3/5
Good tunes, respect the works, but his limited range singing kind of gets tiring to me.

3/5
Paul Revere & The Raiders
4/5
Metallica
4/5
Amy Winehouse
4/5
The Rolling Stones
3/5
Good first album. They have their distinctive sound. Songs are somewhat ho-hum compared to subsequent albums, of course.
Fugazi
3/5
Good stuff, but kind of tired me out.
Animal Collective
3/5
Really interesting set of tunes.
Bob Dylan
4/5
Cat Stevens
4/5
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
JAY Z
3/5
Funkadelic
4/5
Serge Gainsbourg
2/5
Some really good music composition on this album. The voice parts turn me off to it though. And then there is the content....
Beck
4/5
Have never listened to a Beck album. Glad this site encouraged me to give one a go.
Nas
3/5
Dig the jazz tones. I'm waffling between 3 and 4... First album by a young rapper, impressive.
Throbbing Gristle
2/5
Very interesting composition throughout, but it is not something I would listen to much. A couple of the tunes grew on me. Overall not my cup of tea though.
Calexico
4/5
Yes
4/5
AC/DC
5/5
It's crazy how good this album is. I was never a huge fan of AC/DC even though I knew all their songs, including these 10. That all of them are together in one is amazing.
Michael Jackson
3/5
Turbonegro
3/5
So torn on whether to give this 3 or 4 stars. Admittedly, I am enjoying it more than many others I have given 3. However, a requirement for 4 is that I would add it to my library to listen to regularly, and don't think I would do that. It's a solid 3.5 on my scale for sure...
Tricky
3/5
Really sweet grooves, definitely a go to when yearning for some trip hop. Impressive first album in Tricky's solo career.
Death In Vegas
3/5
Interesting electronic tunes, all of it easy enough to listen too (maybe there was one that I couldn't dig, but didn't listen closely enough to remember). Enjoyable overall.
Beastie Boys
4/5
Little Richard
4/5
So much energy, so many of his best known songs.
Marvin Gaye
4/5
The Jam
3/5
An inoffensive album to listen to. Not all that complex, and to me it was not very catchy. You could definitely use it as pleasant background music for social gatherings.
Wire
3/5
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
4/5
Liked this more than I expected. Somewhere between 3 and 4. Will go higher because of the good musicianship by The Attractions.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Such a fine listen all the way through. Both sides start off ridiculously strong and the following songs let you groove.
The Strokes
3/5
Between 3 and 4. With a bit more heft I'd go 4, but instead, 3.
D'Angelo
3/5
Such a tough one to rate. Love the tunes, great music. D'Angelo has an incredible singing voice, no doubt. The amount of falsetto and its presence and reliance upon in every song wore me out through.
Thelonious Monk
4/5
Soft Cell
3/5
Sly & The Family Stone
4/5
Infectious tunes, love 'em.
Fela Kuti
4/5
The Roots
3/5
Need a 3.5 for this one! Fun to listen to but put off a bit by "easy" rhymes in some places.
Steely Dan
4/5
Definitely a 4, not quite a 5. I need more Steely Dan in my library...
Tim Buckley
3/5
Good tunes but doesn't move me much. His range kind of gets tiresome after so many tunes. Relaxing album though.
Black Sabbath
5/5
Like it is anything less than a 5?
Kings of Leon
4/5
Good album, good music, but why does his voice wear on me so badly after that many songs? Maybe I need to listen to their other stuff to hear more registers from him and not be worn down.
Radiohead
4/5
Good album overall. After 4 listenings, nothing really hooked me. All of the songs were pleasant to my ears though. Good background tunes.
Otis Redding
5/5
Morrissey
3/5
Eh, has a good band, they make good music. But overall did not really take to the singing. He's got some chords though.
George Jones
5/5
Such heavy hitting lyrics and fantastic tunes. Then it ends with an upbeat groove that is so applicable to social media today.
The Byrds
4/5
Torn between 3 and 4. Probably should give it a 4 based upon when it came out and how it played then, and it is definitely better than other albums I have given a 3 on here...
The Police
4/5
Some of the tunes are a bit camp but the overall album is good. It's interesting to hear each of the three musicians at that stage of their careers.
CHIC
4/5
Really need 3.5 rain for this. Great grooves.
Elvis Presley
5/5
I have not listened to much Elvis, and I may have been missing out. He production on these (he was very involved along with the credited producer) is really noticeable and really good. Mad respect.
Randy Newman
4/5
Such classic ditties.
Jungle Brothers
4/5
The Smiths
3/5
I don't know why I cannot get into his singing. Music seems good enough but his presentation bags at me for some reason.
5/5
Such a good album. I'm ashamed I've never listened to the entire thing until now. So thankful for this site!
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
4/5
Really digging this album. Think it's the drum swagger. Great to listen to while coding.
X-Ray Spex
3/5
Great lyrics, pretty decent tunes, the walking wailing turned to go overboard at times. Very respectable punk album.
The Residents
3/5
Feel they went overboard on dissonance and discordant vocals, but music is good and grows on you. Would not add it to my library because it's not my thing, but I appreciate their work. Not sure why they are called avant-garde because what they are doing is nothing new. Its electronic basis is perhaps?
