Ray Of Light
MadonnaI enjoyed listening to this album again. It starts off a little meh for me but then builds and really hits its stride in the middle and then tapers off. Some clever new style for her in some of those middle and ending songs.
I enjoyed listening to this album again. It starts off a little meh for me but then builds and really hits its stride in the middle and then tapers off. Some clever new style for her in some of those middle and ending songs.
This was really amazing throughout the entire album. I really regret not knowing about this band before. They are going into my playlists and I may purchase some of their albums.
I wasn't really expecting to like this album, but I enjoyed it very much! The word play and music was excellent. The interludes between the tracks isn't my thing, but it changes the pacing of the album and contributes to the listening experience.
Again, another album I wasn't really expecting to enjoy, but did. My first exposure to sampling used across an entire album that really added to it was Paul's Boutique by The Beastie Boys. This album had that feel. It was at times a little repetitive, but stuff would still surprise me.
This was okay. He is an excellent showman and gave a great performance. The problem, for me, is that blues isn't really my thing. I'm glad that I listened to it, but doubt I will every listen to it again.
This was okay. I didn't recognize many of the song, I really new and like La Grange, but didn't realize that they were the ones that did it. Enjoyed it alright, but this style of music isn't something I generally gravitate to.
This was not unpleasant, but utterly unmemorable. Nothing really stood out to me but as a fan of electronic music I appreciated their founding and vision of what electronic music could be.
I have liked Prince and knew a lot of songs of this album, but I had never listened to it all the way through. I really enjoyed it.
Okay, so I listened to the wrong album first, The Circle Will Be Unbroken Volume II, and then tried listening to this. I really like blue grass, but this I did not enjoy. Too much, too long, repetitious.
Solid album. I had heard about half of it before. Enjoyed listening to it end to end. Not something I regularly listen to though.
This was a pretty good album for non obtrusive background music. I didn't find the songs particularly compelling to listen to or something that gets my amped up, just something to have on when you want to concentrate on something and filter out other noise. I liked her voice and the music was pretty good.
This was an enjoyable album. I had never listened to Gene Clark before. I learned the term "jangle pop" by looking up the artist.
I really didn't care for this album at all, and it was a slog to listen to. I almost gave up on it.
This was an okay album. I liked the music overall, the lyrics were a bit much at times. It felt like he was trying way too hard.
I liked this album pretty well. Some of the singing and music really stood out.
Solid background listening. Not bad for coding when doing routine stuff, but interesting enough to pull focus when it's really needed.
Solid album that I enjoyed listening to. I was working and didn't give it the complete focus that I wanted to so I will add this to my library and relisten to it again.
I don't think I'd ever listened to this album all the way through, though I have heard many of the songs from it. It was pretty good. It started out strong and continued to have a feeling throughout most of the album and then kind of lost me at the end. The denouement started too early.
A couple of really good songs, but didn't care for the rest that much. Talented, but just not my cup of tea.
There were some really standout songs on this album. They weren't the most popular ones either. Will definitely listen to this album again. Nice pacing and mood.
I normally don't listen to jazz voluntarily. This was okay. It didn't annoy me and I was able to code to it fairly well. It wasn't jarring or distracting. I will try to give this album a few more listens to see how it grows on me.
This wasn't bad. I recognized a few of the songs as The Who, but there were a couple that I had heard that I didn't know The Who sang. It wasn't bad overall.
To me, this was like background music for an older generation. It wasn't unpleasant, just not my thing. Having said that, I may try to listen to it again.
I'm sorry to say that I didn't even now Keith Jarrett's name and I wasn't expecting to really enjoy this album, but I did. It's really quite wonderful and remarkable. It's very good music for me to code by. It's floats between inspiring creativeness and pushing work forward. I will definitely listen to others of his, but I think The Köln Concert will always be a favorite as the album that got me interested in Keith Jarrett.
There are some good songs on this album, but his work really doesn't resonate with me. This is the second of album of his (one solo, and this) that I've listened to it, and it's a bit of chore to listen to. I do think this album was better than the other though.
I had never heard of Muse, and I wound up enjoying it quite a bit and will try to relisten to this album and probably others of theirs. One song really reminded me U2 and others reminded me of Chris Cornell. The album kept me engaged throughout.
It was unpleasant, but not necessarily my cup of tea. I didn't realize that Steely Dan sang Peg. I recognized that song and none of the others.
The only song of hers that I knew was Son of a Preacher Man that I heard because of Pulp Fiction. I wound up enjoying this album far more than I thought I would. It's just pleasant background music. To me it's right on the border between four and five stars, but I am going with a four.
I listened to a Led Zeppelin a lot when I was in high school and stepped away from it for several years. This was better than I remembered and what's more is that I never really picked up on their influences when I was younger. All in all, a very solid album.
This was okay musically, but I didn't really enjoy it that much. I thought the title track was pretty inventive, and though I had heard the song before and enjoyed it, this time through it didn't really stand out that much.
I've heard several of ELO's songs, but never listened to a complete album. It definitely has a feel to it and it reminds me of mixing The Beach Boys, The Beatles, and Queen all together. The musical inventiveness of The Beach Boys, lyrics and singing style of The Beatles, and the grand themes and productions like Queen. A distinct style of their own. A solid album.
There are some really good and amazing songs on this album, but, to me, Neal Young's voice can get to be a bit much. All in all, a pretty solid album but hard to listen to straight through.
This was a really wonderful album and had me entertained and engaged almost the entire album, there was only one song near the end that I didn't think was as good as the rest. Inventive lyrics and music throughout and I just enjoyed the style all around. While I had heard of this band, I never really gave them their due because the name kind of put me off. Big mistake. I really wish I had grown up with this band.
This is normally something that I think I might like, but something about Nick Cave really sets my teeth on edge. It just strikes me as angst ridden faux introspection. The music itself I thought was fairly well done. Not something that I will seek to listen further to.
Pretty good overall. I knew 3 of the songs pretty well and was pleased by this album. Again, another band I had never really listened to an entire album from. The songs that I knew were from the radio and soundtracks. Most albums seem to end with weaker tracks. Not so on this album. I thought the last two song were the best. A pleasant surprise.
I had never heard of this band or could I recall every hearing a song of theirs. This album was really enjoyable from start to finish. I will add them in to my rotation.
I had heard of the Kings of Leon, but never really heard their work. My feelings on this album are mixed. I thought some of the music was very clever, but the vocals and lyrics were a bit much for me. I thought that, at times, they were trying too hard to sound cool or something and didn't have a natural feel. Instead of just enjoying the music, the performance would pull me out of the music and I was thinking about how he was singing and not what he was singing. I will probably try to listen to listen to some of their other work and see how I like it. Maybe they will calm down in later efforts.
This was okay overall. Some of the songs were fun, but others I thought were trying to be shocking just for the sake of being shocking. His voice, however, was really something at times. He has very different vocal styles that are very well done.
The music on this album is really solid. However, the lyrics are either irreverent or inane.
I didn't care for this album as much of the other of theirs that I've listened to as part of this project. The solos went on too long and I got bored listening to them.
Growing up I had heard of the Pixies but had never listened to them. This album was really something. I'm regretting not listening to them sooner. It's nice though, now, to be able to recognize their influence on other artists.
This album was okay. It's nice to listen to their earlier music, but it went on for a bit too long at times. Some of it was pretty fun and inventive. In particular, Bike stood out to me.
This album definitely has a feel to it. I really liked some of the songs, but I tried listening to this while I was lifting weight and it wasn't a good fit. I'm on the fence about 3 or 4 stars, and trying to account for my poor listening voice, but will go with a 3. However this is an album, and artist that I will try to listen to more.
This was pretty good. I don't think I've ever listened to Nas before. Sadly my background in rap is pretty limited so I'm glad to be broadening this aspect with this listening project. I really liked the energy of the album.
It's been years since I've listened to this album and I forgot how much I enjoyed it. Solid album from beginning to end.
Again, another artist that I've never listened to a complete album of theirs. I appreciated this quite a bit. Might be good background music for certain tasks. Her voice and style is spectacular though! The emotion really comes out.
I enjoyed this album fairly well. The problem that I have with this is that I am not a big fan of the self-reference. It was jarring at times on this album and pulled me out of the music. I will try to listen to their later work and see if the relaxed and got some more self-confidence.
This really isn't my cup of tea.
Not really great. I used to listen to a lot of this style of music. I was aware of them and probably heard a song or two, but that never really enticed me to listening to an entire album of theirs. Can't really explain why. I like the style overall, and that it was done well, but it didn't mesh with me. That's surprising and something I can't explain.
I like his voice and style, but this album isn't very creative. The basic Tutti Fruitti formula was used several times.
I had heard a lot of their song but not a complete album. I like it pretty well. It was a little repetitive at times, but I like the style overall.
I couldn't get a hold of the complete album so I cobbled together the songs from greatest hits and other compilation albums as best as I could. It sounded like pretty standard rock of that time, nothing really stuck out for me. I don't understand why some of these songs appear to be impossible to find.
The was a very interesting album to listen to. Initially I did not like it. I can't put my finger on anything specific other than it just didn't seem to resonate. A few songs in though, I was becoming intrigued by the music. Not what I was expecting. I will definitely listen to this again. I didn't care for the denouement. The slow songs towards the end weren't that special to me. Having said that I will listen to it completely again, and perhaps other works of his. Giving it a 4 because it was a challenging album.
This was okay. I had heard the first song "Sunshine Superman" before and didn't know who sang it. I really thought "Season of the Witch" was a great song. Which, I don't think I had ever heard before. I have since found out that it's really well known. All in all, not bad, some of the slower story telling songs aren't my cup of tea.
Enjoyed listening to this album again. I was really into it when I was much younger. It doesn't have the same allure, but I still liked it.
I enjoyed this fairly well. A couple of classic and well known songs. I had never listened to this album.
I hadn't listened to this album in a long time and, to be honest, really wasn't looking forward to it. However, once I got going, I enjoyed it reasonably well. There are some really amazing songs on it and the album has a nice overall feel to it.
For reasons unknown, I had really ever listened to Aimee Mann that I know of. I like this style of music in general and really enjoyed the album. Definitely will listen to again.
Couldn't find the complete album. Cobbled the tracklist together as best as I could. It was okay. Nothing really outstanding though.
This was okay, but I didn't care for it that much and I usually like Elton John. Not sure why.
This was okay, but I just couldn't get into it. It was like a spoken word fusion of jazz and rap. I admit that my mindset wasn't the best for listening to this style of music. I was distracted and couldn't give it the attention that it deserved.
I really like Madonna and it was nice listening to this album again. There are some really good and clever songs on this album. It has a nice feel to it. I wish it ended a little stronger as I don't really care for the last couple of songs as much as I do the others. I will try to listen to them more and see if they grow on me.
I had heard of Fishbone, but couldn't recall every listening to them. I had a vague recollection of them being some kind of mellow punk band of the 80s and 90s and wasn't sure what to expect. This album was really unexpected and I enjoyed it very much. The music had a great variety and still maintained an idea of the band. There is one guy with a really amazing voice. The album finished strong too.
I liked this initially very well. It was nice to hear that almost pre-industrial sound. Their persona seems interesting too and they seem to manage balancing their line between seriousness and camp. However, this was beginning to wear on me by the end of the album. May take some getting used to.
I've never listened to this album and enjoyed it quite a bit. It's well done, varied, if a little long.
This was okay. It was nice to hear some of the songs again. Never listened to the whole album, T.V. Dinners caught me by surprise as I thought it was pretty funny.
This was interesting but not really my thing. I may try to listen to it again, but am not sure at this point.
It was nice listening to their earlier stuff. Solid, but nothing really outstanding to me.
Never heard of this band. It was pretty rockin. Will try to listen to it again.
This was okay, just a bit long.
This was okay. A couple of standout songs.
This is really a beautiful album. It is pretty downbeat though. It is not an album that I would relisten to that often as it is pretty melancholy and introspective. There are times in my life where this would have been a welcome friend to listen to frequently. That is not where I am at currently but will keep it in mind should I feel the need for deep introspection.
Pretty good sound, but a little repetitive. I had not heard this band before and am glad I was able to listen to them.
This was pretty solid just not something I listen to all that much.
I enjoyed this very much and the first album of Bob Marley and The Wailers I've listened to besides Legend.
This was pretty good, I liked the first few songs more than the last. The first two felt almost like a conversation and provided good, relaxing background listening.
This wasn't bad but didn't really move me.
This is really didn't stand out for me.
Sonic Temple is a favorite album of mine and I've listened to other songs from The Cult. Not sure why I never stopped to listened to other albums of theirs. This is a solid album and, to me, it appears that this is when they cemented their own sound that continued to evolve. A solid album and I like their material. Not sure why they included Born to be Wild on it.
I had heard a few songs from this album before. Overall I thought this album was very good, and I do wish there was more piano and voice driven popular music in general. However, to me, this album got a little too something towards the end.
This album reminded me a lot of high school. That when I first listened to them after one of there cycles of popularity. It's okay. Some good songs, but a little uneven.
This was okay, but not really my thing overall. I really liked the second track. It reminded me of bluegrass quite a bit in structure and rhythm. It is very intricate and layered though. I know nothing about playing a guitar, let alone a sitar, but this sounded like very painstakingly earned talent.
This was one of the more unique albums I've listened to. Some of it was very clever musically but it really wasn't my thing.
Pretty solid album. I hadn't listened to it in a long time. In fact I'm not entirely sure I listened to the entire album in a single sitting before. Pretty even, finished reasonably strong. I liked it fairly well, better than I remember actually.
I had never listened to this album but had heard several songs from it as I like the Talking Heads. I really enjoyed this album. I really think they are unique and ahead of their time.
This album has some really amazing songs on it, and it's been a long time since I listened to it. Enjoyed listening to it again, but it's not something I go out of my way to listen to these days.
Another solid album. I think I enjoyed this one more than the other of theirs that I listened to.
This was, by far, one of the most interesting and well done albums that I've listened to yet as part of the 1001 albums project. That being said, there were some times that I felt annoyed by it. By this, I mean certain songs were annoying to me, but they were few, and the songs that really hit, hit hard.
This took me back a few years. I hadn't listened to this album all the way through but knew many of the songs. This album was packed full of hits that have seemed to hold up over time in a way. Not the best music, but enjoyable in its own way.
This was okay overall. Not my thing, but reasonably pleasant background music. All of the introductions take away from the mood. Also, I knew Duke Ellington's name and had a vague sense of his style, but I was surprised to see his music align more closely of what I think as big band than to jazz.
I just finished a Dusty Springfield album for the 1001 Album project and wasn't expecting to enjoy it all that much, but I did. I really enjoy her voice and style that the brings to most of these songs.
I enjoyed this album overall, but it's a little uneven. There are a couple of tracks that I didn't think really fit with the rest of the album, but all in all, it was pretty good.
This was pretty good overall, with a few standout songs that I'm surprised that I never heard before. Well maybe not too surprising. I'm glad that I'm expanding my musical horizons.
I think this album was better than the last of Joni Mitchell's that I listened to as part of the 1001 Album project. It's still not something that I care for.
I had never heard the name of this band but knew the title track. Pretty good overall. Enjoyable background music.
There are some really famous and enduring song on this album, to be sure, but overall, it was a little uneven for me. I think they were still trying to find their unique sound at this point. Pretty solid, but not something I will seek out to listen to again.
I enjoyed listening to this album again. It starts off a little meh for me but then builds and really hits its stride in the middle and then tapers off. Some clever new style for her in some of those middle and ending songs.
Another solid entry from them. The music is a little repetitive at times but I still like it quite a bit.
Sadly, another band I have never listened to. I thought this album was very good overall, pretty varied and creative. Will put The Roots in rotation.
The first part of this album is really good. Amazing actually. They do a great job of building within their songs and there is a nice tension. The last part just didn't have the same impact to me. It felt flat.
I enjoyed this album and own it. It's been a long time since I listened to it. It is good but didn't hold up as well as I thought it would.
This was okay, but not really my thing.
This album grew on me. The lead singer's voice reminded me of The Counting Crow's singer.
I think he is very talented, but this really isn't something that I personally enjoyed that much.
This was better than I remember it. I wasn't expecting to like it at much as I did, but it seemed to hold up pretty well.
When I got this album I was kind of dreading listening to it. It's not really my kind of music, but I wound up enjoying it. It's not something that I would go out of my way to listen to, but is very pleasant background music.
I didn't care this too much. It wasn't unpleasant, but it wasn't engaging either.
It's been a long time since I've listened to this album. It has held up pretty well and brought back some memories. I enjoyed more than I thought I would.
I hadn't listened to this in a long time, and probably won't relisten to it anytime soon, but it has some really catchy tunes. Surprisingly so. They were still fun to listen to.
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I like how they used their different voices throughout the songs, or at least some of them anyway.
I was only able to listen to about 2.5 hours of this collection. I wasn't expecting it to enjoy it as much as I did. It was really delightful. I don't consider myself a huge fan of the old timey music, but this was really exceptional work. The audio quality was fantastic, the music, and of course Ella Fitzgerald. I was able to listen to this and work and it really put a smile on my face at times. Just really pleasant to listen to.
This was interesting album, I can't tell if I like it or appreciate it. Structurally it reminded me of what I consider to be traditional Irish folk songs, by this I mean rhythm and structure. The intonations are very different.
Hysteria has a lot of hits. This album has several. It's just that the voice gets to be a bit much for me. I can take it in small doses and enjoy the occasional song, but listening to a whole album isn't something I really care to do with this group.
This was okay. I hadn't listened to it in quite a while. Some good songs, but it didn't hold up as well as I thought it would. Perhaps an album for a different time in your life.
Wasn't really compelling, didn't actively dislike it either.
This was okay overall. I couple real standout songs. Peace Frog is still a favorite.
His voice is really amazing, but as iconic as this album is, I just couldn't really get into it.
Enjoyed it without really noticing it.
Other than catching Stevie Wonder's songs on the radio, I had never really listened to him. I know he is very famous and very good, but this album really surprised me, it was was varied and interesting and his voice is amazing.
This was really amazing throughout the entire album. I really regret not knowing about this band before. They are going into my playlists and I may purchase some of their albums.
This was very please to listen to. He has such an amazing voice and vocal style.
This was okay. Not something I really get into.
There are a couple of really iconic songs on this album, but for me, overall the album didn't hold up very well. There is some about his vocal style that kind of sets me on edge. It's kind of like he's on the brink of having an emotional fit of one type or another.
This was okay. I imagine that there is something about being around Elvis at the time he was breaking ground, but it didn't really resonate with me.
I knew a couple of his more popular songs and had never listened to an entire album. I enjoyed it much more than I anticipated.
I liked this okay. It's good background music and he is incredibly talented but it's not something that I seek to listen to.
I remember getting this album when it came out and I didn't enjoy it very much. I'm glad that I got relisten to it. I like it quite a bit this time through.
I think his lyrics are amazing and thought provoking. His music takes a background to his words so the messages shine through. However, between the subject material and his voice it can be difficult listening to an entire album. Better in smaller doses.
I was unable to listen to this album. I couldn't find it nor could I easily assemble its tracks from other albums.
I enjoyed listening to this again. There are some really good songs on this.
I didn't care for this album too much.
I thought this was a metal band for some reason. I thought the music was creative and okay to listen to.
This was pretty good. Enjoyed, but doubt I will listen to it again.
I forgot that I had owned this album at one point in my life. It was really nice listening to it again and it held up surprisingly well. There are some songs on here that I really like.
I enjoyed this album okay. It didn't hit me the same way as when I was younger. Not something I will relisten to but there are a few songs I will listen to if they're on.
Pretty good and not a band I can remember listening to before.
I was unable to listen to this album as I could not find it anywhere.
I would like to take a moment to thank the creators of the 1001 Albums book and this project. This is a band that I never would have heard of. This music was very interesting and experimental. It had, at times, what I thought were really strokes of genius and novelty and not something I would have ever learned about if not for this project.
This is my third Miles Davis album so far and my least favorite of the three. I normally like his music reasonably well but there was something about this that I didn't care for.
I thought this was okay. I don't understand why people think this is one of the best live albums.
I couldn't give this album a fair listen. Giving 3 as default.
Not something I understand.
I like this okay a different sound for him but a couple of really enduring songs.
Pretty solid. I've always like the Talking Heads but hadn't listened to their earlier stuff, or some more of it anyway.
I had heard several of these songs in movies or on the radio and didn't know that they were The Kink's song. I liked this album quite a bit in the beginning and still enjoyed it towards the end, but it wasn't as good as the first part. It ended feeling a little repetitive and not as inventive as the first part. Still good though.
I didn't care for this.
This was pretty good overall, but a little uneven. Will probably try to listen to more of her work.
This was kind of fun. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
I really enjoyed relistening to this album. I love their sound.
I knew the really popular songs from this album but had listened to much else of theirs. It was okay overall. Her voice is really iconic.
This was pretty good. I had heard several of these song and didn't know that they were his.
This was okay. I don't understand its place on 1001 Albums though. Perhaps it was the fusion of hip hope and pop?
I enjoyed this quite a bit. I think he is very talented, and his music is subtle.
It was okay. Not their normal stuff. Seemed a little more experimental.
I hadn't listened to this album, no do I recall hearing any songs off of it save for Radio Free Europe. Pretty good overall. It's interesting to me to listen to this album as I think their distinctive sound was evolving strongly at this point.
This was okay. Wasn't bad, but didn't really stand out either.
I enjoyed his solo work more than his work with The Pixies.
I did not care for this.
This brought back some memories. I had listened to this in some time and the songs that hit still hit the same way.
This really was an unexpected and fantastic album! I have a hard time categorizing it, but I enjoyed it thoroughly and it will be going into the rotation and I will listen to her other albums.
Solid album. Enjoyed their sound.
This was okay. Representative of alt rock during the time.
This was okay.
This was okay. Didn't really grab my attention.
This was okay. I didn't hate it, nor particularly like it. I don't understand why there was all the fascination with them at the time.
When this came up I was not looking forward to listening to it. I wound up enjoying it more than I thought I would.
I thought this was pretty good all around. I enjoyed the music, lyrics, style, and feel of this album. Something I will listen to again.
This was fairly enjoyable. I think that there is something specific about the time and their sound, but it's held up pretty well.
This was pretty enjoyable. They definitely have a distinctive sound.
I wasn't expecting to like this, but I did. The story of what happened because of this album is crazy!
I enjoyed this album. Brought back some memories. I was nice listening to their evolution.
Enjoyed the album. Some clever lyrics, but it's a little repetitive.
This was okay. Hadn't really listened to them before. It might grow on me.
