Recognised more of the songs than I thought I would. I think it would be an album that grows on me the more I listen to it, but 3 stars for now as it’s not something I think I’ll immediately listen to again.
Very unique and interesting sound
Had already listened to this album when it released in summer 2017. Was a favourite of mine during that summer while I interned at DWHP. Very catchy pop songs with some nice ballads mixed in.
Really enjoyed the album. Cold War is a great single and the Overture tracks were unexpected surprises.
Can’t believe I never listened to Neil Young before. Going to have to listen to his other albums now. A Canadian folk rock hero along with Joni Mitchelll
Didn’t really enjoy it that much after a few listens
Maybe it’s because I’ve heard lots of classic rock before, but this didn’t particularly stand out to me
I only was sure that I recognised a few of the songs but the others felt so familiar no doubt because of MJ’s influence on pop music
Strong album with some classic (Bohemian Rhapsody, Love of my Life) and some nice new tunes I hadn’t heard (‘39 and Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon)
I think placing the album during the time that it was released would add to how innovative it was, but it’s hard to understand that in hindsight without the full appreciate for the history of punk rock
Obviously made more iconic by living in London
Not a fan of this album of his
Probably hurt by the fact that I still associate Dolly Parton with the Hannah Montana tv show
Jimmy page lives down the street from me
A couple cool songs but some really strange/uninteresting ones too
None of the songs stood out to me. I liked the instrumentals, but not overly memorable
Will put it in my jazz playlist to give it a few more listens but not sure if I like it
Fun album but not particularly special
When I saw the album started with “Like a Rolling Stone”, I thought I would love the rest of the album. Unfortunately, the songs after that weren’t that interesting. “Desolation Row” might be my second favourite on the album.
2.5 stars
Wasn’t aware of what prog rock actually was until listening to this album. I really didn’t like it at first, but it grew on me a bit.
Giving me this album right after I rated Yes’ first album a 2/5 is cruel
Reminds me of Julia Holter’s “Have You in My Wilderness”. Really enjoyed the sound of the album and the lyrics were interesting.
Favourite song on an initial listen is “The Queen and the Soldier”.
Fun album
Classic
Quite a cool punk rock album. Probably more up my alley than for most given all the Green Day and other pop punk I grew up listening to.
Better than I thought / remember from the singles
A classic! Didn’t find any singles that stood out to me other than the hits on the album. I think it’s more of a complete album to listen and relax to back to front
Really solid album. Enjoyable on the first listen. Could maybe reach a 5 one day for me, but for now it’s a solid 4.
Not my everyday listen, but Nina Simone would be a great artist to listen to while relaxing on a quiet day with nothing to do.
Couple interesting songs, but album as a whole didn’t leave a strong impression
Some quintessential songs from my pre-teen years on here. That alone warrants the 4 stars for me. I don't think I’ll come back to the other tracks though
LMK and Frontline were standouts
Listened to at 3am while sick and unable to sleep. Not sure if that helped or hurt the rating
At least it was short
Love the sound. The lyrics of the songs aren’t really a standout here / feel pretty generic
A solid 3.5. I would definitely listen to this again
The drum solo on Moby Dick dragged for me, but I guess it’s a classic rock album after all. Surprised I like this one a lot less than their first album
Really grew on me after subsequent listens. A bunch of fun punk rock type songs here.
Not bad at all, but not the genre of music I immediately enjoy/appreciate
Some absolute classics like Smoke on the Water and Highway Star (Rockband song). Don’t think I’ll go back to the album though.
Really fun album! Tears Dry on their Own and Love is a Losing Game were my favourites.
I actually don’t like the Rehab, which is the opening song and the only one I knew coming into the album listen.
Grew on me the more I listened to it.
A nice listen. Would be good car music.
Didn’t think there was anything for me on this album (although admittedly only gave it one listen through without my full attention)
Reviewing a few months after I listened to it, but I don’t think I enjoyed it
Pretty cool album! Mercedes Benz was a change up on the album, but I liked it
Some songs I liked on the album: Out on the Tiles, Tangerine, That’s the Way
Nice and relaxing music but not something I’d put on to actively listen to.
Decided I won’t finish an album if I can tell I won’t like it like this one.
Got halfway through and didn’t like anything about it.
I can see how it would have been pretty innovative for the time.
Magical Dream was the standout song.
Really enjoyed the album. The Wizard was my favourite track
Didn’t really enjoy it
Started off strong with 5D, but I didn’t enjoy the rest as much
Really enjoyed this album. Nomeva and Mbube were two highlights for me. Really beautiful songs.
A couple classics on this album. Very easy listening
Skipped through the first half. Didn’t love the experimentation
Nothing stood out to me, but the flow and sound was quite nice. Maybe one I'd come back to in the future, but not a must.
Title track is a classic. The rest of the album was nice, but not one I’ll return to
Wasn’t my to my taste
Started off promising and fell off hard
Some classic stadium songs. Not an album I’d listen to in it’s entirety front to back
Was pleasantly surprised. The album was much more than just their hit Paper Planes. The album has such a distinct and fun sound. In some ways it is very reminiscent of the early 2000’s and in others it feels quite fresh.
I think I first heard about the Dire Straits from Nicole’s dad. I had two songs already saved, but this album exceeded my expectations. The final song, Brothers in Arms, is such a good closer to the album.
I didn’t like any of the songs except Heaven
Nice songs but the album didn’t stand out to me
Not a fan of the title track despite (or maybe because of)how ubiquitous it is. The rest were similarly not to my taste
Nah
I can see the appeal, but old hip hop isn’t my fav
Paint it Black is iconic, but I also really enjoyed Under My Thumb
Fun listen! Faves: Monday Monday, Go Where You Wanna Go, California Dreamin’, Spanish Harlem
Dnf
Uninteresting
Very different and slightly appealing but not something I’d listen to often
I preferred the front half of the album. Was leaning towards three stars but made the mistake of looking the album up on review aggregators and was convinced to bump the rating up a notch probably as a result of those positive reviews
Very high energy, very punk.
I only heard this album for the first time in 2013 or so, but it still has such a nostalgic feeling for me
Other than the hits “Message in a Bottle” and “Walking on the Moon”, which I’d heard before, the only song that caught my attention was “Bring on the Night”. Other than that, it’s a 1 or 2 star album
Really enjoyed the album. Such a distinct mix of songs. Opus 40 and Goddess on a Hiway were my favs
Not bad
Can’t be too stingy with the 5/5. This is a great album. The subjects that he cover would have been so taboo at the time the album was released, but it feels like the album has aged really well.
This was a bit too country for me.
Had a very misconceived notion that this would be stadium rock type music.
Hadn’t heard of them, but have definitely heard their hit songs. Didn’t enjoy the album that much. Not my favourite genre.
Very cool album with a range of genre influences. The first track was familiar as Kendrick sampled it on a song. My favourite song on the album is “What It Comes Down To”.
Some interesting songs, but didn’t stand out
Some popular songs (You’ve Got a Friend in Me) that I didn’t know were sung by her, but the album didn’t catch my attention
Not something I would listen to often, but a very fun album. The Wait is my favourite on the album.
It’s not bad, just didn’t stick out to me
It’s such a fun album. Hard to not bop along to songs like “Little Miss Queen of Darkness”
I remember when this was released to critical acclaim (10 by Pitchfork), but I could not get into it then and I can’t get into it now
A bit too airy
The long instrumentals aren’t that interesting to me. It’s technically impressive (not that I know how difficult it is to perform), but does not capture my interest
Very cool album, although not one I’ll listen to often. Presumably influenced the genre that has led to some of my favourite artists at the moment like Fred again, who does a lot of sampling
You can hear the influence from Gorillaz on this track, but less from Blur and the Clash, which both have members in this rock group. I was not expecting anything of the sort when I first saw the album having never heard of the band.
I was pleasantly surprised by tracks such as "Northern Whale" and "Behind the Sun"
Didn’t love it
2.5 stars. Didn’t particularly enjoy it although some songs were catchy
Interesting…
A heavily blues inspired rock album that I didn’t care for at first but grew on me with a couple listens
Sounds quite experimental, not really for me
Sounds like a pretty classic rock album, but no songs in particular stood out to me
I first heard Kate Bush when watching Stranger Things. Running Up That Hill became stuck in my head for weeks after that.
This album doesn’t have the same level of pop appeal, but there are some great tracks. Love and Anger, Rocket’s Tail and This Woman’s Work are some of my favourites from the album
Such a fun album by a very fun band. Picture Book is one my favourite songs on the album but there are a lot of upbeat happy songs that I liked on the album.
Similar to the other album from The Doors that I got a couple of days ago. It’s an interesting / groovy sound, but not something that I would normally listen to
Pretty iconic album. Not my favourite Kanye album, but as his breakout it has a unique spot in his discography
The album didn’t wow me as much as Rust Never Sleeps, but there were still a number of songs that I liked on the album
I saw on Spotify in the “Fans also like” section that Suzanne Vega was listed as a similar artist and I feel like that’s a very apt comparison. This album has a similar sound to the eponymous album by Vega from what I remember. My favourite tracks were Winter, Me and a Gun (although not one to listen to on a shuffle given it’s quite dark and not really a song), and Little Earthquakes
Nice jazz album. The opening song Back and the Chicken Shack is quite goofy for some reason, but as a whole it’s a nice album.
I quite liked the drum and bass genre, which isn’t something I listen to normally. The album as a whole is quite long and the songs were quite repetitive (probably a signature of this genre), so not an album I’d listen to again back to front.
The first half of the album was a 5/5 for me and the second half a 4/5. The title track Pink Moon is great, but my favourite was Which Will
I liked this album more than I was expecting to. There are a lot of fun and catchy pop rock songs on here
I remember listening to Skeleton Tree some years ago and not really liking it, so I was pleasantly surprised to listen to this album and find that I quite liked the sound. It had this Johnny Cash / Leonard Cohen type of sound to Nick Cave’s vocals that made the songs very interesting. Into My Arms was my favourite song from the album
Didn’t get interested in it
Didn’t love the album, but it’s cool seeing the early days of what became punk rock. Teengenerate and California Sun were my favourite tracks on the album.
Classic rock band. Had previously only heard their newer stuff but Sunday Bloody Sunday was a pretty familiar tune given how popular it is. I also liked Like a Song
Not on Spotify and the Youtube upload wasn't great so didn't listen in depth to the album. It sounded good for parts of the album, but other tracks were not interesting.
I liked the album. There were some nice melancholy songs such as "Just Like the Rain" and "Who's Going to Shoe Your Pretty Feet" that were particularly to my liking
I could see myself liking this album one day. It has a fun groove to it, but as of listening to it today it isn’t an album I see myself intentionally putting back on to listen to. The track Nightfly is a pretty fun song that is emblematic of the album as a whole.
I already knew and liked the album, but listening closely to it today as I was waiting to board the plane to Hanover to spend New Years gave me a chance to appreciate the album again.
Nothing stood out to me at all on this album
Started interesting, but didn’t like it in the end
Was a little interested in the album, but not enough to see myself listening to the entire album again
I can see this album climbing to a 5 in the future. The songs on this album feel so cosy and familiar. Bob Dylan’s storytelling is a real standout for me and the stripped back instrumentals accompany the songs perfectly. My favourite tracks were “Tangled Up in Blue”, “Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts” and “If You See Her, Say Hello”
Pretty cool for a genre and language that is foreign to me. My favourite track was "Alegria, Alegria"
The album grew on me quite a bit after listening to it a few times. It reminds of some early Led Zeppelin that I listened to last year.
My favourite tracks were “My God” and “Wind-Up”
A nice country album. I feel like with this genre, and and least with this album, the songs are ones that grow on you over time rather than becoming instant favourites
It’s interesting hearing these “futuristic” sounds from a time in the past. Didn’t really enjoy the album, but was fun to listen to once
Quite a fun album. It’s a Sin was my favourite track
It feels crazy to give this a 4/5, but I’m not sure if it warrants a 5/5 from me.
Out of songs that I hadn’t heard before, my favourites were Something and Golden Slumbers / Carry that Weight
I knew of Duran Duran from playing Rockband as a kid, so Hungry Like the Wolf was a familiar song. I also liked Rio and Save a Prayer
I can understand the appeal, but I personally didn't love it. My favourite track was "Honey"
I didn't realise how many classic songs were on this album. I knew of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Drain You", but I didn't realise "In Bloom" and "Come As You Are" were also on this album.
On top of that, I really enjoyed some songs I heard for the first time such as "Lithium" and "On a Plain"
This is up there amongst some of my favourite albums of all time (albeit the final track is a little strange)
