Look, I know that this was probably recorded before 9/11, but the fact that this was released a week after 9/11 in 2001 with an American flag cover, and songs titled "New York, New York" and "The Rescue Blues" really makes you think... Feels like he either jumped on the 9/11 grift wave, or he knew about the attacks on the World Trade Center ahead of time. I guess he didn't pop off much anyway, I thought this was the guy from Fall Out Boy when I saw the album cover lol.
Didn't know U2 was nice like this. First track "Sunday Bloody Sunday" sounds like "Just Dance" by Lady Gaga lol. I liked this.
Cool live album, classic songs, great singer-songwriter.
Was cool, had never heard of this band before. Kinda folksy kinda Spanish, nice guitar playing.
Thought I hated The Doors before, but this was a nice blues rock album to listen to.
Neutral on this one. Overall kinda melancholic, would probably slap if I were listening in a chill/sad mood. Appreciate this guy as a musician and didn't hate the album, it was fine.
Liked this one, listened on Friday (today is Monday) so I'm forgetting some of the details, but I remember I liked it. Never really got into Fiona Apple before, this is wild for a debut album.
"I feel like Mick and Richards, I feel like Muddy Waters". All I could think about during "Tiger In Your Tank" was playing this song while pouring sugar into someone's gas tank. These old albums are good but super repetitive tbh.
This was a sweet album - not like "yo sweet dude", more like "aww that's sweet". Had never listened to Willie Nelson much before, was always put off by him simply because of the cult of personality surrounding him as some stoner icon... Not really sure if this album clarifies any of that at all, wouldn't consider this something you need to listen to while high. It was fine to me. I liked Blue Skies a lot, guitar tone on that one was clean.
Don't see why this got such high critical acclaim, guessing just because it's Adele. This is prime "I'm 25 years old and my relationship issues are actually the most devastating in the world", just doesn't really hit, but then again I can't really picture her doing positive pop music. Again, good voice redeemed this for me, along with "Hello", "Send My Love", and "Million Years Ago" - this is why it's a 2/5 and not a 1/5 for me.
I did not need to hear this before I die. Maybe it was stellar for the time or something but I did not enjoy this and can't see myself listening again.
Sounds like R.E.M. Not my fave album of theirs but they have a distinct sound, singer's voice can get kinda whiny/boring. Fine album, highlights weren't super high and lowlights weren't super low for me. Highlight tracks that stood out for me were "Stand" - I feel like I recognize this from a TV show or something but not sure where. "Hairshirt" - I think this one had a mandolin in it. "Orange Crush" - apparently the most popular track on the album but dodn't stand out too much, wondering if it is about the soda??? Always really liked Peter Buck's guitar tones, makes 6 strings sound like 12, assuming he recorded this album on a Rickenbacker 6.
I knew this was gonna be a 5 when it popped up, re-listened anyway. I listened to this shi as a baby. Certified creamer of an album, good length, every track hits, ordering works well too. Adele, take notes, being British and making a 'pop' album ain't it. Britpop was the kind of pop the world wants from the UK (also grime)
I thought this was pure 80s music until I saw that it was released in 1979, maybe these were the first guys to do it?? Didn't mind it but nothing special. First two songs were good background music for getting somewhere in a rush, the next track "despair" really dropped off in energy. Not really my thing but then again I'm sure this slapped for some people 40-45 years ago.
Main guys voice is WILD. Every time I see this band they're running like 12 dudes deep... How many ppl are in this? I like the album cover. "One of Those Things" sampling Werewolves of London was a nice surprise. Nothing special in particular but enjoyed parts of it, didn't really find myself wanting to skip at any time - also a relatively short album with an upbeat pace which helps make it an easier listen.
This was sick. Easy listening during the work day. Would prob put it at 4.5 but fuck it I'm going 5!
Love this album, got a big smile on my face when I saw it pop up. Mardy Bum all time GOAT track. Don't care that these are basic takes. If you're reading this and this is the first time hearing this album (likely not if you know me personally), I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! This was the first album I learned to play through on the guitar. Sweet debut album from some teens, main singer's accent is so heavily British it actually becomes endearing. I think this is like a 10-streak of albums out of the UK now.
Don't think I've ever really listened to industrial rock. Album was very quiet at times, but also could go hard. Would give this a 2.5, round it up to a 3.
This made a lot more sense once I realized they're German. Some parts of this were EXTREMELY repetitive and drawn out, but in a way it sort of forced me to question my own sanity while walking through the grocery store. Scratched some itch in my brain I guess.
This is like my autism soothing music - high bpm, high energy, repetitive rhythm. The patterns/layers are like fractals fitting together in my brain. Surprised I never really got into Megadeth/thrash metal more for this reason. I like the sound.
Like their sound, especially the buzzing high-gain guitar tones on most of this album. I feel a sense of melancholy when I hear a song by The Black Keys over some new Ford car commercial, but the music is still nice.
Been wearing Superstars for the last decade you know I had to do it to 'em. Have always liked this album a lot despite joking on most of the other big pre-1985 hip hop acts.
Just another album, nothing spectacular but not terrible. I liked "To Face The Truth"
Not much to say. I liked when they both sang together IG
Linkin Park wasn't a "religious experience" for me like it seemed to be for a lot of other boys at my elementary school, but I still liked their hits and recognized them from the Transformers movies and stuff. This is good and I think it kinda set off nu-metal
Doesn't beat Purple Rain. Was thinking this could've/should've ended after "Free" but then I really liked the last three songs! Not planning to check out the 65-song super deluxe edition, unfortunately.
Yes! This has already been in my top 5 albums forever, I listened to this album probably over 150 times throughout college, I probably owe some of my degree to The Fugees at this point. Gotta listen to the version of 'The Beast' with the full Chinese restaurant skit at the end, that one is wild. I used to get bored/tired when it got to 'The Mask' but now I think it's a fine song.
I didn't really f with this
As a person named Tom I think I have a deeper understanding of Thom Yorke's music than most people, sorry that's just the way it is. I like this - also, my friend would kill me if I didn't give this a 5.
You gotta listen to the deluxe edition with Quixoticelixer. Also bumped this one as a baby and thru my life, I think my dad had it on cassette or CD. Goated album.
Groovy
I almost gave this one a 4/5, but then a bout of the 'tism hit at the same moment "praise you" started and I said fuck it we ball.
This was pretty average. Easy listening but the songs all seemed to lack much structure at all - it was the "Oops: All Verses" flavor. Seemed like someone described the concept of music to them and then they recorded an album, and you just know that New Yorkers will wax poetic on this and about how artsy and underground it is. This does not feel like the gritty underground that people know to be NYC, this feels like Mormon music. I guess it's influential or whatever, and wasn't terrible, so giving it a 3, but idk why for some reason this pissed me off
6/5 stars. Perfect Juneteenth album rec. This should be top 10 albums anybody should listen to before they die, and as they die, and after they die. Yeezy season approachin'.
Didn't know U2 was nice like this. First track "Sunday Bloody Sunday" sounds like "Just Dance" by Lady Gaga lol. I liked this.
DB ate on this one. This is what Seinfeld was talkking about in Bee Movie when he said "ya like jazz?"
So good, doesn't need any historical context or preface to slap this hard. People who have only heard "Mr. Blue Sky" are missing out big time. Love the choir vocals and 12-string sounds when they're used.
This was pretty boring, probably would not listen through again. I liked the stretch of "Sound and Vision" -> "Always Crashing in the Same Car" -> "Be My Wife", but that's about it. Not sure why I had to hear this, idk maybe people just really like all of Bowie.
Cool album cover. The number of bonus tracks/alternate versions on the album was frustrating to navigate. Sound actually grew on me, crazy fast bass player if some of this is being player by a person and not a computer. The drum sample at 2:00 on "Fascist Groove Thang" is nice I like that it only shows up once, makes me miss that sound.
Had not listened to this, liked it a lot
This was cool, didn't blow my mind but wasn't bad.
Fine. Not many big MJ hits
Nah this was pretty boring especially for 2017. I'm guessing they're using some obscure vintage synths that synth nerds go crazy for or something like that, but it ends up sounding pretty basic.
Started slow but actually grew on me. Almost considered giving a 4 at one point but not dying to listen to this again so it's just average.
Never seen the movie, fine ambient background music
Can be cool but gets to be annoying and boring. Feels more like they're trying to rhyme for the sake of rhyming instead of actually saying anything meaningful - same energy as people who complain that "ugh too much of rap is just about violence and drugs". Well, nerds, this is what you get when that isn't a topic in rap: a trio of jewish men screming in your ear for an hour straight.
Not my favorite by them, but still a good debut that sounds good. Crazy what they did to improve within a year for their next album.
Liked the beats on this, doesn't hit that next level of hip-hop IMO, but still think it's fine. Really can't get into Chali 2na's voice - you know the one - just sounds like he's putting on a character.
Nice and short too, not much else to say.
Like these classic jams, these brothers be crazy. Good singers, though songs are fairly basic. Maybe like a 3.5-ish?
Has some big hits as high points but not going to praise this or anything, it's fine.
Prob my fave album of theirs but that's because of the hits, their style gets too repetitive/annoying for me to consider this a 5/5.
When I saw this was another pre-2000s English electronic artist, I was skeptical on how much I'd like it. This album slaps hard and was way better than I expected, sounds very advanced especially for 1999 and a debut. The song with the lady moaning got to be too much, hope that one doesn't come up on shuffle.
This was fine nothing special
Thought I wouldn't like this that much but it was fine, like the chill genre and simplicity.
This is the sound I expect from R.E.M. Good. Always gotta love 'It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)'
I don't care that this is a classic or whatever, aside from the two biggest hits on this album the rest is average and forgettable.
This was good, nothing mind blowing, I liked some of the beats but after a while really could not concentrate on what I was coding while he was screaming. Reminds me of Danny Brown.
Fine but not really my taste. The biggest hits remind me of high school/college time which is a good memory.
Oh wow more Bob Dylan. I'm feeling generous as I go through backlog of skipped albums, so I'm giving this a 3, but honestly there's way too much of Bobby boy on this list considering how flat/consistent his music all sounds. I think this is like the third album of his I've listened to and I'm only at like 75 albums so far. I guess it's like "revolutionary" or whatever but I just don't really care much about that aspect.
I didn't know what to expect going into this, which is probably why I put it off, I thought Sufjan Stevens was just some guitarist. This was super unique and blew me away in terms of expectations. It was like listening to a movie or play. Very nice.
Impressive stuff. The "live album" aspect of it was interesting... As you could hear him moaning to his own playing as if he was busting in his pants at the piano. Kind of funny but also like dude chill out.
Good crunch sound, some weird stuff on here but it goes hard.
Oh wow! An 80s British synth-pop album?!? What a surprise, it's not like that's every other album on this damn list! Jokes aside I liked this one better than others though.
Don't know why people love her & velvet underground. They're just so dull to me. Strong German accent makes the one-dimensional singing voice even less appealing to me. Borderline on 1/2 but going to give it a 2.
Fine, long songs got kinda repetitive but don't have strong feelings either way on this one.
Meh
School's Out is always a great track and a good way to start this album, my dad would always play this when I got home from school on the last day of school in each grade :) Thought the album would be a 3 but the second half picked up for me, I liked this, it was nice and short, would listen again.
Seems like pretty standard thrash to me, can get into it but I think I would always put thrash in the middle of the road. Cool that it was early 90s out of Brazil. Also the drums and guitars tempo seemed out of sync in the first song, probably intentional.
Didn't expect to like this just based on the decade and style of the cover, but it was actually a great listen! Piano was grooving and vocals fit well, simple and clean. I thought the lyrics were lacking a bit though, repetitive and basic. Enjoyed this album and will be listening again.
Not terrible, but this sounds like department store music, a lot of the instrumentals sound like the default ringtone on old Cingular wireless/Sprint flip cellphones. Average song length > 4:30 was also not appreciated considering how safe a lot of the record sounds.
All sounds very similar. Not bad but the shortness made it fine. Gritty I guess. YouTube Music only has the 3 hour 'super deluxe' version and no way I was going to listen to all that.
Only first song is decent, didn't hate it but would not listen again.
Reminded me why I dislike The Doors - THIS BORING AS HELL!!! I think the fact that The Doors are so widely lauded makes me dislike them more. Jim Morrison sounds like he's 45+ years old.
The repetitive guitar riff on the first track is nice and I was actually liking this on the first two songs, and then it dropped off HARD for me. I remember when he died it was like a huge deal, I just knew him as the Hallelujah guy. Hearing this album makes me think everyone else is crazy for worshiping this dude - this was BORING AS HELL to get through despite it being a pretty short album. This guy is just moaning, and when "Diamonds in the Mine" came on I actually got angry with how annoying it was to listen to. I get that it's 'artsy' or whatever but that doesn't mean it also has to be garbage. Would only listen to the first track again.
Solid album but also boomer-tier
Chill but boring. Good fingerstyle.
Fine but probably won't listen again, not into the style/genre and it sounds even more outdated than older music.
Classic 80s. Take On Me is goated, rest of album is neutral for me
Groovy.
Already rated this one as the 2nd album in the list, still a 5
GOAT 5/5. Formative album during hs
5/5, feeling generous. Great debut album, yellow is an all time classic.
This was nice, more energy than Bob Dylan
Not really into it. Not terrible tho, just won't remember or listen again.
Sam Cooke the GOAT. Live albums are interesting, and his speaking voice was unexpectedly scratchier than his singing voice. I like his recorded sound better but the fact that he's still great live is impressive.
Honestly pretty boring
Never heard of this band but I loved this style, awesome debut and feels ahead of it's time for 2002.
Can't imagine what club these songs are considered "classics" in... Boring ahh club.
Eh, some OK parts but even for grindcore a lot of this felt sloppy. Not the worst but prob wouldn't listen again even during a workout.
Coldplay is solid. Somewhere between 3 and 4 for this album. Not bad but not jumping to listen on repeat either.
Santana is sick! This album just sounded average to me though.
Quality is amazing for a live recording in 1957, beautiful singing voice too! It's weird to hear something that sounds so modern in the way they speak/sing and the recording quality when I know it's super old. I guess most pre-60s media portrayals of the way people spoke are done up for the big screen.
Long but cool
Fine. Didn't bother listening to all of the different mix versions, just listened to the Iggy mix. Search and Destroy is a classic.
Yeah this is clean. I get it now.
Thin Lizzy rips. Live album loses some feel once I found out it was combined from multiple performances. Maybe that's because it's a double album, but anyway the music is still great.
Yeah this is junk, not even halfway through and I know this is gonna be a 1/5. Album cover isn't even good. Way too repetitive and uninteresting, worst of England.
Not really a Springsteen guy but this had some highs I wasn't expecting. Not bad but not amazing to me.
Drunk In Love redeems this, but otherwise not really vibing with a lot of Beyonce.
I feel like I shouldn't like this but I think it was fine, short enough to be groovy/swingy. Never listened to this dude before. Better than 3/5 but could def get old.
This rips, Alice In Chains rips. Idk why I didn't listen to them sooner considering the Seattle connection.
Kinda weird, kinda cool. Felt like some D&B. Idk if I've ever listened to a full Indian album before this. Feeling generous so a 3.5 rounds up to a 4
Yeah Otis is a good singer. Was surprised to hear covers on this.
I like Cee-Lo Green, pretty much any member of the Dungeon Family is pre-approved in my book. Something is telling me 4/5 instead of 5/5, but I am feeling positive I'll give it the 5!
Yeah this one has the hits. I like this one better than 25.
Heads Will Roll bumps this up to a 4 since it is timelessly remixed, otherwise there were some boring points.
Too much Bob Dylan on this list IMO. Like, this is his 30th studio album?!?! Give it a rest bro. Boring.
Skipped through most of this. I get that it is the first of its kind in the genre, but it was made as a background, not to be listened to like the 1000 other albums on this list. This is fine as ambient music but I've never been in an airport and thought "oh cool I know/love this song, glad I know it's a Brian Eno original!". It's supposed to go unnoticed. It was peaceful I guess.
This was fine, good energy. Idk why the first song was so long though.
Yeah this rips
Nice classic 90s rap. A little boring at the beginning and some parts but overall this is a classic I vibe with and respect.
Beatles are goated, not even my fave album of theirs but I could listen to this over and over again
Nope, did not need to hear this. Also, hate the way they spelled 'ho' as 'heaux' - just terrible, like she's not even from Louisiana? Too many skits and I don't feel the whole empowerment thing behind the lyrics, on top of that wasn't even very impressed with the vocals.
Fine. Decent for early 80s rap
Always loved this album, has some great hits and feels like a great length. I've even listened to the deluxe album with all of the various performances before. Lean 70s 5/5
I like this, simple and catchy. The album had stereo and mono recordings intermixed seemingly randomly and I didn't realize I was relistening to parts.
This was fine but I would not listen to this again. Nothing was really bad about it, but I couldn't get into it IDK.
Rod got pipes
Rippy
Fine jazz. I like that one part that sounds like the Cruella de Vil theme.
Eh, just fine
Didn't expect to like this as much as I did, short and sweet nice vibe.
Banger debut
This ain't it, chief. Fat tiny Tim. 1.5/5
3/5 or 3.5/5. Good live album but nothing super special, crowd was going NUTS at parts. Surrender is always a classic thanks to Guitar Hero 2.
Meh
Goated eminem
This was pretty, unexpectedly liked it
Meh, pretty generic. Dude's voice sounds like Jack Black.
